Notes: Del Worsham was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he competed in both Top Fuel and Funny Car. He qualified the Funny Car, but he ended up as the first alternate for the Top Fuel field with a best of 4.924/296.15. He did not qualify at Arizona for the NHRA Quality Care Nationals where his 5.07/278.98 best was good for the fifth alternate spot. He also failed to qualify at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. He did, however, qualify the Funny Car in both of those fields. Worsham did not attempt to qualify the dragster at the NHRA Gatornationals where he had a bad fire in Funny Car qualifying. He was OK and was back behind the wheel of just the dragster at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Unfortunately, his 5.02/287.53 best was good for the third alternate. Del continued to drive only the Top Fuel car at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where he was the first alternate with a 5.00/288.09. Also ran 4.949/294.31 at NHRA Topeka Fall 1994. Photo from 1994 US Nationals. Del left the team at the end of 1994 to go funny car racing with his dad again. |

Notes: AKA Bad Attitude. Qualified #11 at the NHRA Winternationals. Lost first-round to Scott Kalitta with a shut off run. Also qualified #13 at Sonoma at 5.043/285.89, but lost first-round to Jim Head as both drivers experienced trouble, 7.76 to 8.13. Robert qualified on the bump at Seattle at 5.056/279.67, but lost his first-round match to Blaine Johnson when he crossed the center line. Robert did not qualify at the Pomona Finals with 5.029/283.28 bests. A decent year for the part time team. |

Notes: The Miller American cars were owned by Dick LaHaie, not Larry Minor. Larry had the sponsorship deal and got Dick to run his car under the colors while Minor raced his own (former Gary Beck) car and the funny cars. - Dick LaHaie, Racin & Rockin Radio, 2/24/14 | Dick ran under the Miller banner until Indy, when he ran under his own name. He ran 5.035 at Pomona Winters (runner-up), 279.32 at Phoenix, 4.931 at Houston Spring (which he won), 282.92 at Memphis. Best times from Englishtown to Indy were 5.004 at Englishtown, 281.07 at Seattle. Runner up at Topeka. Photo from 1990 Grandnationals, Montreal. |

Notes: Gene Snow was testing his car at the Texas Motorplex in January. He had Brad Tuttle there to serve as crew chief. The tests were mainly to see how to get the car to launch. The best time was a run to the 800-foot mark before he shut down to a 5.17/206. Gene started the NHRA season by setting Low ET in qualifying #1 for the Winternationals with a track record 4.98 at 268.73. Another 4.98/255.02 beat Jim Head's 5.29/261 in the first round. He exploded a supercharger in round two and slowed to a 5.24/210.42 loss against Dick LaHaie's winning 5.08/273. At the next NHRA event, the Arizona Nationals, a 5.05/248.07 qualified #9. He beat LaHaie in the first round, and a 5.10/257 in round two beat low qualifier Jimmy Nix, who lost a blower belt. In the semifinals, Snow's 5.12 lost to Joe Amato's 5.08. He qualified #9 again at the next NHRA race, the Supernationals at Houston on March 4. This time, a 5.02/253.59 got the spot. He broke in the first round, but his 26.46 (yikes) won when Mike Brotherton also broke. A second round 5.08/253.09 beat Frank Bradley, and in the semifinals, both he and Amato fought for traction, with Gene's 7.23/114.54 coming out on top over Joe's 7.91/140. In the final, he ran LaHaie, and Dick took the win when Snow fouled. Gene failed to qualify at the IHRA opening Winternationals at Darlington (second alternate). Only 11 cars tried to make the eight-car field. Fortunately for him, two cars broke, and he got into the show. He beat Jack Ostrander in the first round with a tire-smoking 5.80/204.90. He smoked the tires again in the semifinals and lost to Wayne Bailey. At the Gatornationals, a 5.13/265.48 qualified #8. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. It was then off to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Gene qualified #2 with a 4.99/277.34. He beat Ostrander in the first round but in round two, a 5.14 lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.13. At the sixth NHRA event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park, Gene ran 5.14 to qualify #9. He lasted until round two when Amato's 5.02 beat his 5.07. He made it into the final at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.21/264.08 qualified #9. He beat Head in the first round and smoked the tires in round two but advanced when Amato fouled. In the semifinals, he met another Texan, Eddie Hill. Gene's 5.10/258 beat Eddie's 5.22/261, putting the "Snowman" in the final against Ormsby. In the final, he ran quicker than Gary, but his 5.14/260.11 was only good for runner-up to Ormsby's 5.15/279. He qualified #6 at the NHRA Springnationals but only got as far as the first round, where he lost to LaHaie. He followed the NHRA tour up to Canada for the Grandnationals on June 23. He qualified last in the sixteen-car field with a 5.40/233.09. Amato stopped him in the first round. He hadn't run the last two IHRA events but made the Empire Nationals on July 1 and cleaned up. He set Low ET in the final while beating Hill for the victory with a 5.18/266.41 to Eddie's 5.46/257. Earlier, he had set Top Speed at 269.92. A week later (July 8), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.03/272.89 but smoked the tires in the second round and lost to Frank Hawley. At the NHRA Mile High Nationals, a 5.31/237.78 qualified #4. He lost to Junior Kaiser in the first round. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Sonoma for the California Nationals at the end of July. Gene qualified #5 with a 5.10/264.62 and made it to the semifinals. A first-round loss followed at the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Seattle when his 5.13/268.09 fell to Ostrander's 5.13/274. On August 19, he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #6 with a 5.10/264.31 and a first-round 5.14/261.09 beat Jim Head's 5.18/265. In round two, a 5.25/262.00 lost to LaHaie's 5.06/277. A week later (August 26), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, and although he failed to reach the finals, he did set Low ET at 5.19. Every racer wants to do his best at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, and Gene was probably less than pleased with his first-round loss to LaHaie there. He had only qualified #12 with a 5.20. He ran much better at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals on September 16. He qualified #6 with a 5.02 but stepped up to a 4.93 (Low ET and track record) at 269.78 in the first round, over Kenny Bernstein's 5.05/275. A second-round 4.99/270 beat a tire-smoking Shirley Muldowney, and in the semifinals, a 4.98 took care of Amato's 5.01. Unfortunately, he broke in the finals, slowing to a 7.03/125.20 and having to watch as Ormsby ran a 4.99/274 for the win. He went to Darlington for the IHRA US Open. Only seven cars showed for the eight spots, and Gene qualified #2. After that, he dominated the race. A first-round 5.66/241.21 beat Richard Holcomb. In the semifinals, a 5.33/240.84 beat Bailey. In the final, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.32/259.69 while winning over Mike Brotherton. Things took a complete turn at the next event, the NHRA Heartland Nationals. He qualified last with a 5.15/263.77 and lost to Ormsby in the first round. At the season-ending IHRA Fallnationals, once again, Snow grabbed a win. A final round 5.27 beat Holcomb's 5.62 for the victory. At the second to last NHRA race of the year, the Chief Nationals at Ennis, Texas, a 5.06/270.75 qualified #14. He lost to Lori Johns' 4.98 in the first round. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from Indy 1990. |

Notes: Hill had a horrendous outing at the NHRA Winternationals. While qualifying, the bolts for the front wing loosened up to a negative angle the the car went skyward. While the front of the dragster attempted to fly, the back wheels stopped the clocks with a 5.21. Eddie pulled the chutes and the car crashed down hard. The car was wrecked, but he was OK. Darrell Gwynn lent Hill their spare chassis and Fuzzy Carter and his crew went to work putting their engine and driveline into the frame. After it was all together, Eddie went to make a pass to qualify and the motor broke (crank). So with one qualifying session left to run, the team again swapped out an engine and with minutes to spare, Hill ran a 5.25/229.47 to qualify #13. That run hurt yet another engine. So for the first-round, they faced (you guessed it), Darrell Gwynn. Hill lost and went home with a destroyed race car and three hurt engines. What a way to start the '89 season. Eddie ran three cars this year. The best qualified NHRA times at standard national events were 5.006 at Ennis Fall 89 and 288.83 at Houston 3/89. The pictured car was definitely run from Memphis to Sonoma. We need to confirm it was the car that ran these best times. Also was a 'shorty' car that ran at Gainesville (and perhaps elsewhere). Look up Jim Hawkins' DragStats when we identify exactly which car ran which race. Where was the 4.935 run? Or is that a misidentification of the 1998 4.936? |

Notes: After a multi-year contract with TRW ended over the Winter of '89, Amato found new sponsorship from Valvoline for '90. He had finished #2 in the NHRA points chase in '89 and was hoping to do better in '90. Joe started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where the new 3.20 rear-end rule didn't seem to slow him down. He qualified #3 with a 5.03/282.39 (Top Speed), but in the first round, he dropped a cylinder and slowed to 5.24/253.66 in a loss to Don Prudhomme's 5.15/270. The next race was the Arizona Nationals. Amato qualified #5 with a 4.99 at a track record speed of 282.92. He then went on to win by beating Connie Kalitta with a 5.04/281.07; a 5.03/275.48 in round two beat Frank Bradley's 5.11/271, and a 5.08/273.97 in the semifinals stopped Gene Snow's 5.12/268. Joe faced '89 NHRA Top Fuel Champion Gary Ormsby in the final, and Joe's 5.05/275.14 got the victory over Ormsby's 5.11. This was his first NHRA victory in eight months. He qualified #5 again at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. This time a 4.99/280.37 got him the spot. In round one, Joe beat Top Fuel rookie Ken Koretsky with a 5.08/276.66, while a 5.04/271.98 took out Leo Gastellum in round two. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 7.91/140.09 loss against Snow, who also had problems at 7.23/114. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.06/282.84 qualified #3. Both he and his first-round opponent, Eddie Hill, smoked the tires in the first round, and Eddie's 5.98/256 got to the line before Joe's 6.24/203.06. He then won the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham early in April. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.04/279.58 (Top Speed) qualified second behind Darrell Gwynn's 4.94/277. These two would reach the final together. In the opening round, Joe's 5.02/277.34 beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.14/272, and he beat the other former Funny Car driver, Prudhomme, in the semifinal with a 5.01 279.06, which beat the "Snake's" 5.24/265. Both he and Gwynn had run similar times to reach the final, and Amato even had lane choice. But it was Amato's driving that got the win as he was first off the line, and his 5.04/272.64 outran Gwynn's 5.02/277. Sadly, that was the last NHRA event Gwynn ran due to his accident in England on Easter. Joe set a track record 4.96 in qualifying #1 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His speed on the run was 280.11. The car slowed to 5.14/272.14 in the opening round, but it was still enough to beat Gastellum's 5.26/269. Another 5.14 at 273.63 defeated Jim Head's 5.21/265 in round two. The team found the problem for their slower times was a weak fuel pump. It was changed for his semifinal race with Bradley and Joe shot to 5.00/287.17 to win over Frank, who overpowered the track and smoked the tires. The speed was tops for the race and was five miles per hour faster than any other run made there. He faced Lori Johns in the final, and both ran 5.02 (Amato at 282.30), but the lady crossed the stripe first. These two would also face off in the final at NHRA's next event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Joe's career-best (to this point) of 4.941/288.46 qualified #1 and broke both ends of the track record. He got lucky in the first round, as he blew his engine on his "odd-lot" solo. The crew installed a new "bullet" for round two, and his 5.02/274 beat Snow's 5.07. Both he and Johns ran 4.99 in winning their semifinal races, with Amato having the better speed at 282 while beating Bernstein. But once again, Amato finished runner-up to Johns as he smoked the tires while she ran 5.00/270 to win. Aside from qualifying #1 with a 5.03 (Low ET) at 281.95, the NHRA Cajun Nationals was not a great race for the team. Only 15 cars showed, so he got a solo in round one, before fouling against Snow in round two. Things went better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 5.04/279.06 qualified second to Frank Hawley's 5.04/275 in Gwynn's car. He stayed in the 5.0 zone by beating Koretsky's 5.33/266 in the opening round with a 5.09/275.98 and a 5.06/277 in round two beat Bradley. In the semifinal, he fell off to 5.13/272.47, but it was still enough to stop Dick Lahaie's 5.16/267. Joe was going into his 45th NHRA Top Fuel final. The two lowest qualifiers met in the final, and Hawley's 5.12/278 got an emotional victory over Amato's 5.22/272.47. Plus 4.939 low qualifier at the 1990 Chief Auto Parts Nationals. He ran 4.955 at Englishtown. Speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from Indy 1990. |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from the 1992 US Nationals. Jim started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #13 with a 5.06/273.22. He lucked out in round one, when Cory McClenathan had troubles and Head advanced with a 7.15/236.77. In the second round, Mike Brotherton broke and Jim advanced with a 23.26/63.76. He ran over eighteen seconds quicker in the semifinals when his 5.06/277.00 beat Pat Austin. In the final, he was up against Kenny Bernstein and despite running his best time of the meet, a 4.98/279.93 he lost to Kenny's 4.96/281. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 5.11/273.88 qualified #10. He beat McClenathan in the first round, with a 5.09/272.80. In round two his 5.14/268.25 lost to Austin's 5.08/286. Houston was NHRA's next stop for the Supernationals. Jim qualified #15 with a 5.04/279.93. He picked up to 4.99/280.46 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner Joe Amato's 4.98/287. Jim had nothing, but problems at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals and he could only muster a best of 8.98/100.12 that obviously failed to qualify. He did not race at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.07/280.37 qualified #13. He fell off to 5.18/272.06 in the first round, that lost to Amato's 4.94/283. Memphis was NHRA's next stop for the Mid-South Nationals. Jim qualified #10 with a 5.07/279.32, but a first-round 5.23/273.30 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.09/284. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals with a best of 5.23/274.30 that was good for second alternate. Up in Canada at the end of June, he was at Sanair for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.20/279.24 qualified #11. Unfortunately, his first-round bad luck persisted and a 5.30/264.70 lost to Amato's 5.09/281. He failed to make the show at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.12/284.16 was the second alternate. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals or Sonoma for the California Nationals. |

Notes: First in the Fours on 4/09/88 with a 4.990 at 288.55 to become the inaugural Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel. Won both IHRA Ennis races. Received extra $100,000 Billy Meyer bonus. Then ran 4.990 and 4.936 at Houston 10/88 (following Gene Snow's first four in the NHRA 4.997). Both Houston 4s were NHRA national records. Earlier in the season, reset NHRA national record at 5.066 at the Gators and went 5.082 for low qualifier at the US Nats. Ran 5.065 at 1988 Keystones. Ran 285.62 at 1988 Gators. |

Notes: Gene started the season by qualifying #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 4.94/279.41. He lost to Kenny Bernstein in the first round. At NHRA's next race, the Arizona Nationals, a 5.10/273.97 qualified #9. In round one, he advanced with a 5.21/270.35 when Ed McCulloch lost a blower on the line in Larry Minor's car. Snow improved to 5.05/275.22 in round two to beat fellow Texan Eddie Hill at a close 5.08/274. In the semifinals, Gene smoked the tires and lost to Doug Herbert. At Houston, for the NHRA Supernationals, Gene qualified #12 with a 4.99/286.18. Another four, a 4.97/285.26 in the first round, was not enough to get by Mike Dunn's 4.89/297. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where a 5.45/235.23 qualified #5 in the eight-car show. He improved to 5.29/249.30 in the first round, over Mike Smith, but in the semifinals, while racing Herbert, the car broke at half-track, giving Doug the win. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There a 4.96/288.09 qualified #11 for the show. Unfortunately, he lost to Scott Kalitta in the first round. Snow attempted to qualify at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he failed to make the tough eight-car show. |

Notes: Set National Record at 4.981 (low qualifier) on 9/3/89 at US Nationals (7th entry in the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel) before lowering it to 4.951 at 89 Keystones. Photo from Columbus 1989. Eventually went quicker at Ennis, but lost the record. Listed times from Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 1. Winter 89/90 has 286.53. This was to be Darrell's last full season driving a Top Fuel dragster due to the accident that happened in England in April of '90. He did well, finishing fourth in points in NHRA Top Fuel competition. New sponsor, Coors replaced Budweiser for the '89 season, and Gwynn would have been the first to tell you that things didn't go to well until Brainerd. There he lost in round two, but he ran well and the team left with smiles on their faces. They then won the next two races jumping up in the points. Darrell started the year by qualifying #5 with a 5.08/281.16 at the Winternationals and improving to a first-round 5.07/279.41 over Eddie Hill. Eddie would not have even been in the show after his blow over in qualifying, but the Gwynn team loaned Hill their shape chassis so that he could run. He lost to Frank Bradley in the second round. At Houston for the Supernationals, he qualified #2 with a 5.00/281.25, but in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Frank Cook. Darrell got it all together for the Gatornationals where he ran a 5.13/281.60 to qualify #5. He beat Mike Brotherton, Dennis Forcelle and Earl Whiting with a 5.22/265 in the semifinal. In the final, he was paired against Hill who had lane choice, but Gwynn prevailed with a 5.08/280.72 to Eddie's 5.11/276 for his first win of the year. After his big win, it was surprising that Darrell failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. At the fourth race of the season, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Gwynn qualified #2 with a 5.10/274.55. He set Low ET as well as a track record in the first round, when he beat Chris Karamesines with a 5.09/272.06. Unfortunately, he took a nap on the starting line in round two and despite a 5.14/268.65 he lost to Hill's 5.17/270. At the next event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, he qualified #3 with a 5.05/276.49. Once again he set Low ET and a track record when he beat Forcelle in the first round, with a 5.00. A second round 5.05/277 beat Endres, but in the semifinals, both he and Gary Ormsby ran 5.04's, but Gary got the win. It was on to the Cajun Nationals where Gwynn continued to qualify in the top half of the field. He ran a 5.24 for the #8 spot and in the first round, he beat Whiting. In the second round a 5.23/271 beat Forcelle's quicker 5.22, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Frank Hawley. The next race on the schedule was the Springnationals. Darrell qualified #5 with a 5.08/274.47, but he lost to Forcelle in the first round, when the "Coors" car smoked the tires. The tour shifted to Canada for the Grandnationals where a 5.28/271.00 qualified #8. He beat Paul Smith's 5.34/264 in the first round, with a 5.27/267.77, but in the second round, he fell off to a 5.34/243.04 that lost to Lori Johns' 5.22/272. At Englishtown for the Summernationals, Gwynn qualified #11. It was his worst qualifying position of the season. He did beat third qualifier Endres in the first round, and in round two Gene Snow smoked the tires against him and his 5.32/271 took the win. But in the semifinals, Ormsby beat him with a 5.18/281. The tenth race of the season was at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Gwynn qualified #8 with a 5.34/263.31 in the thin air. He beat Bradley in the first round, but lost in round two to Dick LaHaie. The California Nationals was the next stop and a 5.13/280.63 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot setting up a first-round race with low qualifier Bradley. In the race, Bradley beat him by a tenth with Frank's 5.06/285 defeating Darrell's 5.16/281.42. At the next event, the Seafair Nationals, Gwynn tied his worst qualifying position with a 5.17/276.07 getting the #11 spot. In the first round, Ormsby beat him with a 5.04/283 to his 5.19/259.59. By this time, Darrell and crew chief Ken Veney were both getting hungry for a win; it was now the middle of Aug, and they hadn't won since March. So they pulled into the Northstar Nationals a little more anxious to win than normal. A 5.18/270.35 qualified #3 and Darrell stepped up to a 5.12/275.98 in the first round, over Jim Head, but in round two he overpowered the track to a tire-smoking 6.45/147.37 that lost to Joe Amato's 5.20/275. Regardless of the rest of the year, the next race made the season. That race was the US Nationals at Indy. Darrell set a track record 4.98 in qualifying. It was his first pole of the year and it came with a speed of 282.48. He beat Robert Reehl in the first round, and in round two he got some measurement of revenge by beating Ormsby's 5.07/285 with a 5.04/280.72. In the semifinal, a consistent 5.04/281.51 beat Hill's 5.09/276. In the final for the gold, he met LaHaie and ran another 5.04/280.46 for his second win of '89. He didn't have to wait long for his third. At the next race, the Keystone Nationals, he qualified #2 with a 4.98/284.99. A first-round 5.00/281.86 beat Cook, and in round two, a 4.96/282.75 beat Head. He set Low ET and a track record 4.95/281.16 in beating LaHaie's 5.00/281 in the semifinal. In the final, he ran Amato and another 4.95/281.77 was enough to cover Joe's 5.01/285 for his third win of the year. The next event was the Chief Nationals at the Texas Motorplex. Darrell qualified #4 with a 4.96/286.25. In round one, he ran a 4.98/284.45 to beat Head and in round two, a 4.99/285.62 beat Cook. He made an easy run (?) of 5.03/282.66 in the semifinals when Brotherton broke to advance to the finals. In the final, he ran a strong 4.94/279.85 that lost to Ormsby's 4.97/291. He made the finals of the next race as well, the Fallnationals. Gwynn qualified #2 with a 5.07/278.37, but in round two he beat Ormsby's 5.16 with Firebird Raceway's first four, a 4.99/278. In the semifinals, he beat LaHaie with a 5.08/278. In the final, he ran Shirley Muldowney, and she got a slight holeshot and hung on for a popular win with her 5.05/275.48 beating Darrell's slightly quicker 5.04/278. At the season-ending World Finals, Darrell set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 4.95/285.98. He beat Brotherton in the first round, with a 5.01/282.75, but fouled away a 5.00/283.10 in the second round against Ormsby, bringing his season to a close. |

Notes: Ran 4.983 at NHRA Indianapolis on September 3/1989, to become the sixth member of the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel. Photo from Columbus 1989. Confirmed 287.63 MPH at Ennis Fall 89, but MPH from Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 1., Winter 89/90 listed 287.90. Where was that run? | The Miller American cars were owned by Dick LaHaie, not Larry Minor. Larry had the sponsorship deal and got Dick to run his car under the colors while Minor raced his own (ex Gary Beck) car and the funny cars. - Dick LaHaie, Racin & Rockin Radio, 2/24/14 | LaHaie finished the season third in points. I'm sure he went into the year expecting to win more than the three national event wins that he got. But it was still more NHRA wins than he had gotten in '88. The season started with Dick running 5.16/279.32 to qualify #11 at the Winternationals. He lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.05/288 in the first round, with a 5.09/277.43. At the Supernationals, a 5.07 gave him the dreaded #9 qualifying spot and setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Joe Amato which he lost. He qualified in the top half of the show at the Gatornationals when a 5.13 was good for the #6 position. He got past the first-round for the first time this season, but in the second round, he had a tire-smoking battle with Hank Endres and lost. Things had to change and they did at the next event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. LaHaie took the pole with a 5.10/281.69. He beat Frank Bradley's 5.23/277 in the first round, with a 5.15/282.92 (Top Speed). In round two a consistent 5.16/278.46 beat Frank Hawley and in the semifinals a 5.18/279.32 beat Lori Johns. He went on to take his first victory of '89 with a final round 5.13/281.77 over Eddie Hill's 5.19/267. The NHRA tour then swung to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals where Dick qualified #6 with a 5.10/284.18. He beat Kalitta in the first round, and a 5.08/284 beat Johns' 5.19 in round two. But in the semifinals against Hill, he had a strut that held the rear wing in place break. It unloaded the car and LaHaie did a great job in bringing the car to a safe stop. The sixth race of the season was the Cajun Nationals. Once again he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.24/277.09 setting up a first-round run against low qualifier Frank Cook. This time, LaHaie won the first-round race and in round two he left on Bradley and won with a 5.22/277 to Frank's quicker 5.19. He overpowered the track in the semifinals and smoked the tires to a loss against Gene Snow. A 5.10/286.07 qualified #8 at the next race, the Springnationals. He beat Paul Smith in round one, but in the second round be lost to Jim Head when they both smoked the tires. It was up to Canada for the Grandnationals in late June. He ran a 5.21/280.54 to qualify #5. A first-round 5.20/279.67 beat John Carey. He improved to a 5.13/282.13 in round two to beat Bradley's 5.17/279. In the semifinals, Amato's 5.25/268 fell to Dick's 5.14/279.58. In the final, he ran Gary Ormsby and a 5.21/274.55 was good for the runner-up spot to Gary's 5.15/278. LaHaie got his second win at the next race, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 with a 5.10/283.37 and took out Carey in the first round. In the second round, he ran a solo 5.19/275 when Cook was unable to show. In the semifinals, a 5.15/280 beat a tire-smoking Hill. In the final, he reversed the outcome of the last race when he met Ormsby. A final 5.11/282.04 gave Gary's 5.24/271 the runner-up spot. The thin air of Denver was the next stop for the Mile High Nationals. Dick ran a 5.26/270.51 in qualifying #4. He beat Mike Brotherton in round one, and a 5.35/244 beat Darrell Gwynn in round two, but in the semifinals, both he and Amato ran 5.22's with Amato getting the win. From there it was off to Sonoma for the California Nationals where a 5.06/283.64 qualified #3. He beat Lori Johns in the first round, with a 5.07/281.60, but he broke and was unable to run Gordie Bonin in round two. Dick was runner-up at the next stop, the Seafair Nationals at Seattle. He qualified #6 with a 5.09/285.53 and in round one, a 5.11/283.82 beat Bonin's 5.52. In round two, a consistent 5.10/282.84 beat Bradley's 5.19/278. A semifinal 5.11/281.42 beat Cook's 5.22/275. But even though he stayed consistent in the final with a 5.10/278.98 he lost to a strong running Amato at 5.01/278. At the thirteenth race of the season, the Northstar Nationals, Dick qualified #1 with a 5.12/279.85. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires to a 6.33/160.82 first-round loss to Dennis Forcelle. He ran Indianapolis' first four during qualifying, a 4.98/285.44 that eventually held for the #2 qualifying spot. LaHaie beat Pat Dakin in the first round, and in round two, a 5.06/276.20 beat Johns' 5.13/274. In the semifinals, a 5.01/280.72 beat a tire-smoking Amato. In the final, he ran Darrell Gwynn and he overpowered the track to a shut off 17.11/48.44 while Darrell took the win with a 5.04/280. |

Notes: 19-year-old top fuel driver. Qualified 15th at Gainesville 1992. | DePorter's best of 5.17/237.40 failed to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals. She was the fifth alternate. She also failed to make the field at the Arizona Nationals with a 5.23 best that was good for the third alternate. A 5.20 at the Supernationals also failed to qualify (fourth alternate), but Danielle made her first NHRA race when she made the show at the Gatornationals with a 5.06/283.10 for the bump spot. She also ran her first-ever "four" in the first round, with a 4.98/277.77 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 4.88/298. |
