Notes: Ruth qualified #1 at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals with a 5.88. He had lots of issues in the opening round against Don Garlits. Not only did Ruth blow a rear end, but he also blew his engine while Garlits went on to win the event. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 5.880/231.36 was the second alternate. Jerry reset both ends of the track record at Tulsa in qualifying #1 for the AHRA Springnationals with a 5.60/249.30. In the opening round, he slowed to 6.07/225 and lost to Frank Bradley's 6.00/238. Pomona was Jerry's only NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Photo from 1985 Nationals. After football, Dan called Bobby Rowe (who he knew from racing hydroplane boats) and the team bought the Frank Taylor Dago Red fueler, but sold to Eddie Hill. Bought the former Kilpatrick & Connell car from Gene Snow because the cockpit was bigger. Debuted at Bakersfield 3/85 with a 5.76/245 qualifying pass. Lost to Ron Smith in round one, on a holeshot with both drivers running 5.91. Crew was Bobby Rowe, Donnie Couch and Larry Cook. Set a top fuel track record 5.88 seconds at Houston International Raceway in beating Buddy Warren in a match race. Lost to Ernie Hall in round one, at ADRA Spokane, running 5.882. Dan's best NHRA times were 5.607/251.25 at NHRA Englishtown. | Chassis was a long-in-the-tooth Swindahl, first run brand new with Kilpatrick/Connell/Tharp in '83, then Gene Snow in '84, then the "Quarterback Sneak" in '85.

Notes: The new Al Swindahl car really worked well. Stutz ran 5.832/217.39 at Pomona to qualify #7 for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Johnny Abbott in the first round, 6.82/237 to 7.21/213. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field with a 5.85/234.37. He improved to 5.75/235.60 to beat Dwight Salisbury in round one, but his 5.93/232.55 lost to eventual winner Danny Danell's 5.85/238 in round two. Stutz showed up at OCIR on June 25, with Larry Minor helping him out for the Nitro Championships. With Minor's set-up, he set Low ET in qualifying with a 5.78/235.60. He smoked the tires against Dannell in the first round with all his newfound horsepower and lost. Ray qualified #14 at Indy at 5.824/238.09, but in round one, he fell off to a ten-second shut-off against Gene Snow. Ray's 5.773/237.46 at the OCIR World Finals was the quickest bump spot on record to that time, but he had more in store for race day. His amazing 5.609/238.72 shocked Bill Carter's 5.77/230 in round one. In round two, Joe Amato ended Ray's day 5.68/239 to 9.97/96. Did Ray run 245.90 somewhere this year? It was not on the NHRA national event trail. | In the ND '83 Finals post-race notes (return of the LA Hooker, etc.), 5.60 CC Kirk Peters ('79 Div. 7 Champ with Kerhulas) mentioned that Larry Minor passed along some information, and back in the pits at the '83 and '84 Finals the Stutz car sounded/idled like the Minor cars. Not as monster-sounding as the Minor cars, but you could hear the similarity in the idle. Kirk Peters can also be seen at the starting line with the Minor group at the '83 Nationals final on the YT/Diamond P coverage. - Joe Moore

Notes: Snow debuted his new Former Patrick and Connell car at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 5.765/235.60 qualified #9 and set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Gary Beck. The race between the two didn't materialize as Snow's car broke. He then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals but failed to qualify for the eight-car show with a first alternate 5.770/242.58. He qualified #9 at the Englishtown Summernationals at 5.718/245.90. He lost to Frank Bradley in round one with a shutoff 10.80-63. Gene ran 5.68/246 at ADRA West Salem, OH, on 7/22/84. He qualified #6 at Denver with a 5.779/241.93, but he lost to Danny Danell in round one, 6.89/161 to 7.83/88. Gene qualified #4 at Brainerd at 5.683/239.36 but again could not move past the first round, losing to Connie Kalitta, 5.98/205 to 6.010/208.33. Gene qualified #6 at Indy with a solid 5.646/247.93. In round one, he got revenge on Danell, 5.620/243.90 to 5.82/243. A consistent 5.625/240.64 took out Joe Amato in round two. But old nemesis Connie Kalitta ended Gene's day on a holeshot in the semis, stealing a 5.791/236 to 5.790/250.00 victory. Gene's next race was the World Finals, where he qualified #12 at 5.769/244.56. He lost a close first-round match where Shannon Stuart got a .499 to .526 holeshot, and both racers ran identical 5.695 ETs (Snow at 243.90). Former Kilpatrick & Connell 5.44 car. Gene eventually sold the Swindahl car to Dan Pastorini.

Notes: Randy was at St. Louis on June 17 for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and twelve cars were attempting to qualify. His 5.62 qualified on the "bump." Unfortunately, the car broke in the first round, against Mike Brotherton.

Notes: Danny was way down the list of non-qualifiers at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. But he did much better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. It helped that only 16 cars showed for the field, so there were no non-qualifiers. But still, he ripped off a 5.81/241.28 to qualify #13. That was quicker than Don Garlits, who followed him with a 5.85. Unfortunately, in the opening round, Danell slowed to 6.11/230.17 and lost to Dick Lahaie's 5.73/241. In April, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field and went out in round one, where his slowing 6.77 lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.70. He then returned to Bakersfield, hoping for a repeat as he had won the race in '83. Twenty-four cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen car field, and his 5.83 qualified #5. He improved to 5.75/243 in the first round, beating Garlits' quicker-but-later 5.73/244. He improved just a little more in the second round to 5.73/245, but it was no match for eventual winner Gary Beck who ran 5.41/261 in the other lane. Near the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.69/243.24 qualified #6 in the eight-car show. In round one, Joe Amato's 5.65/257 defeated his 5.79/244. Columbus also suffered from a lack of TF entries for the NHRA Springnationals. Only 15 cars showed. Danny ran 5.72/240.64 to qualify #6. In the opening round, the car lost fire on the line against Bob Simmons. He made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he ran 5.75/249.30 to qualify #6. He lost to eventual winner Beck in round one. Only 12 cars showed at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Danell qualified #7 at 5.660/250.69. In the first round, he broke a transmission and lost to Amato's tire-smoking 7.64. Amazingly, Danny's best time of the year came at the Mile High Nationals, where he qualified #2 at 5.627/247.93. He best Gene Snow in round one as both cars had issues but lost to Joe Amato in round two, 5.78/238 to 5.840/241.28. Photo from 1984 Pomona.

Notes: Jeb's 5.628 at Gainesville was not backed up but was the first time someone had gone quicker than Don Garlits' 5.637 from Ontario 1975. Received a 254.01 mph national record at Bandimere because NHRA was still factoring times for the mile-high race plant. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1981. Jeb's 250.69 at Gainesville was the 7th entry in the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. Jeb won the 1981 NHRA Championship by 31 points over Gary Beck. | Jeb was the only driver that qualified for every NHRA national event in '81. He had switched to a 10-71 supercharger with a larger fuel pump and a hotter magneto for the season. His season started at OCIR for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing, where he won Top Fuel with a 5.86. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.86/246.57. A 5.87/245 beat Tony Ceraolo in round one, and he followed that up with a 5.84/245 single in the second round when Mike Tarter was unable to run. He was winning rounds but was burning pistons on almost every run. Allen stated that with his new engine set-up, the air/fuel mixture wasn't right. In the semifinals, his 5.86 beat Dave Settles' 5.94, and he grabbed the win with a final round 5.92/229.59 that beat Marvin Graham's 6.01/236. He then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #6, running 5.98/241.28 for the spot. Unfortunately, rain delayed the race one week, and Allen could not run the rain date as it fell on the same date as the NHRA Gatornationals (March 15). Jeb made quite a splash at Gainesville as he ran a 5.62/250.69 to qualify first. The 5.62 was the first time anyone had gone quicker than Don Garlits' historic 5.63 from '75. He failed to back up the time for a new NHRA record as in the first round, his 5.80/248.61 lost to Frank Bradley's 5.79/243. The following week he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals but rain-interrupted again, and the race was postponed one week until March 28. He qualified #3 with a 5.97/242 and a first-round 6.04/231 beat alternate Paul Romine's 6.20/223. In the semifinals, he fell off to a 6.39/209 that lost to Jody Smart's 6.05/243. The next NHRA event was the Cajun Nationals at Atlanta. It was a tough show to make as it was only an eight-car field. Jeb ran 5.86/236.84 to qualify #6. He beat Graham in the first round, with a 5.92/236.84, but a 6.00/241 in the semifinals lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.97/236. It was then off to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Allen qualified #3 with a 5.83 and a first-round 5.85/249.30 (Top Speed of the meet) beat Connie Kalitta. In the semifinals, he ran a good 5.89, but he finished behind Graham's even better 5.82. Another big win came at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.86/252.10 (Top Speed). His 6.00/247.93 beat Mike Tarter in the first round, while a 5.92 in the semifinals beat Mark Oswald. In the final, he ran Richard Tharp in the "Candies & Hughes" car. Tharp smoked the tires, and Allen ran 5.99/248.61 for the victory. A week later (May 24), he was back in the winner's circle at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Dragway. There he qualified #2 with a 5.87 and a first-round 5.99 beat a tire-smoking Graham. Tharp also smoked the tires against him in the semifinals, and Jeb's 6.02/243.90 advanced into the final. There he ran Terry Capp, and both had traction issues with Allen's 6.11/233.16 coming out on top over Capp's 7.15. Things didn't go as well at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.93/243.90 in qualifying placed him #7 in the field, but in the first round, his car broke, giving Jim Head an easy run into the second round. After that, it was off to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 5.93 at a track record speed of 244.56. A first-round 5.95/242.58 beat Capp, while in the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 5.92 at 243.24 to beat Johnny Abbott's 5.96/238. He faced David Pace driving the "Carroll Brothers" car in the final, and a 5.94/243.24 got Jeb another victory.

Notes: ACI chassis was Dave Settles. | Gene started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #2 with a 6.35. He worked his way into the finals, where he met with Don Garlits. Gene ran a strong 6.12 but lost to Garlits' 6.08 Low ET of the meet run. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 5.823 247.93 to qualify #6. He had a bit of bad luck, good luck (?) in the first round, when he broke a rear end, but won when Richard Tharp fouled. In the second round, he lost to Jody Smart. Best NHRA times at Indy, 5.629/252.10.

Notes: Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Mullins started the year by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event at Firebird Raceway in January He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.67/247.93. A 5.95/245.90 beat alternate John Davisson in the first round, and a holeshot aided 5.79/255.68 beat Connie Kalitta's 5.77/242 in the semifinals. In the final, he used another holeshot to beat Larry Minor. His 5.70/257.14 was enough to take the victory over Minor's 5.63/243. Bill attempted to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals, but a best of 5.77/255.68 left him as first alternate. He did make the show at the Gatornationals, but lost to Chris Karamesines in the first round. In April, he was at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals where he qualified #14 with a 5.77/253.23. He upset Darrell Gwynn in the first round, with a 5.73/252.38 and in round two, a 5.77/250.69 beat a tire smoking Gary Beck. In the semifinals, Bill ran a consistent 5.78/256.99, but lost to Dan Pastorini's 5.75/248.

Notes: 1981 was also a very good year for Marvin during which he again won the NHRA Grand Nationals, and won the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals, the IHRA season finals race, the Bowling Green, Kentucky, and Medford, Oregon, points races, and was runner-up at the NHRA Pomona Winternationals and Golden Gate Nationals. Marvin finished fourth in the NHRA points championship. he ran 250.00 (in 5.633 seconds) at Fremont on October 4, 1981, to become the 12th entry into the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. The team was always among the quickest and fastest cars at each event. | At the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, only two cars qualified that did not run a five-second time. Graham was one of them, qualifying #15 for the show with a 6.01/240.64. A first-round 6.08 beat an off-pace Gary Beck (6.43) in the first round, and in round two, he improved to 5.92/243.90 to beat a wheelstanding Shirley Muldowney. In the semifinals, his 5.96 beat Richard Tharp's 6.03 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. This set up a final-round meeting with Jeb Allen. Allen had been running steady 5.8s, but he had been burning a lot of pistons doing it. In the final, Marvin's 6.01/236.22 finished second best to Allen's slowest run of eliminations, a 5.92/229. Still, it was a good run for Graham considering he almost didn't qualify. The Bakersfield March Meet was his next stop where he qualified #10 with a 6.03/226.70. He surprised #2 qualifier, Terry Capp, in the first round, when he beat him with a 5.95/240.00. In round two, Marvin improved to 5.87/242.58 while beating John Kimble. But at the top end, a wing strut came loose and the wing flew off the car. The dragster unloaded and the rear wheels spun, causing the rear end to blow. This kept Graham from running Doug Kerhulas in the semifinals. The following week (March 15), he was in Florida for NHRA Gatornationals. He used a 5.744/246.57 to qualify #2 behind Allen's 5.62. But an off-pace 6.25/201.79 in the first round, lost to Dave Settles' 6.02/216. It was then off to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified for the eight-car field with a 6.15/222 which placed him on the "bump." But after qualifying, it rained and the meet was postponed a week. Marvin was unable to return for the rain date on March 28. On April 5, he was competing at the NHRA Western Regional Opener at Green Valley Raceway. A 6.28/222.22 qualified #4 in the eight-car show and in round one, his tire-smoking 6.78/226.70 beat Dale Wilch's Chevy-powered car at 7.09/199. Graham smoked the tires again in the semifinals and lost to Beck. Atlanta was Marvin's next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was a tough eight-car field to break into, taking a 5.87 just to qualify. Graham's 5.82 qualified #2, but he lost to Allen in the first round. He got a victory at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships on May 3. His 5.81/238.72 qualified #1, and he beat Bobby Hilton in the first round, with a 5.79/239.36. In the semifinals, his 5.82 stopped Allen's 5.89, putting him into the final against the upstart, Mark Oswald. It was a close race that saw Marvin win with a 5.84/238.09 over Mark's 5.85/246. Yet after that victory, he failed to qualify a week later (May 9) at OCIR for the NHRA Western Regional where his 6.22 was the first alternate for the eight-car show. He then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he qualified on the pole with a 5.77 (Low ET) at 237. The run came at a cost as he hurt some parts and was unable to run in eliminations. Marvin's best NHRA national event times came at Fremont, where he ran the great 5.633/250.00 in eliminations.

Notes: Frank qualified #5 at the season-opening AHRA Winternationals. He ran an off pace 6.49 in the first round, that lost to Don Garlits' 5.94. He blew a motor in qualifying, and a best of 5.97/238.09 failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals in February. He ran at OCIR for the NHRA Division 6 race on March 28, and while he was unable to make the finals, he did walk away with Low ET at 5.80. Frank qualified last in the eight-car field at Tulsa on May 2 for the AHRA Springnationals. In the first round, he beat Chris Karamesines 6.25/227 with a Low ET of the meet 6.15/233.16. In the semis, he lost a close race to Garlits. Frank's 6.25/230.17 lost to Don's 6.24/237.46. During this time, he was skipping over many of the NHRA meets, not running the Gatornationals, Southern Nationals, and the Cajun Nationals. Early in June, he set a 5.82 track record in qualifying #1 at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He beat Dick LaHaie in the first round, with a 6.19 before losing to Garlits' 5.89/243 in the semis with a 6.22/212.77. He qualified #1 again at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.775/234.98. He lasted until the second round when he shut off to a 6.45 against the eventual winner Shirley Muldowney's 5.83/227. He lost early at Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals. There, Jerry Ruth beat him in the first round. Frank's best times were a #3 qualifying effort at Indy at 5.633/249.30. | 5.89 253 AHRA US 30 1982 (Winner) in the first round beating Fred Snavely, Beat Dick LaHaie in the semis with 5.865 241 and beat Don Garlits in the finals with a holeshot 5.877 259.59 to 5.860 260.79. Note: The US 30 clocks were very questionable in 1982 (especially the speeds). - Danny White
