Notes: George's beauty was one of the sport's fastest cars this year. He qualified on the "bump" for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.056/240.64. In the opening round, an off-pace 6.234/195.22 lost to Doug Kerhulas at 5.92/240. Shortly after, he was in St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A 6.32/220.59 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. In the first round, he lost to the eventual winner Don Garlits. | In 1982, Chuck built four identical cars, one for Connie Kalitta, Scott Kalitta's first car, George Tolon's car, and Stan Rosen's Ego Trip. - Chuck Kurzawa III, Draglist LIVE, 2/27/23 |

Notes: Runner up to Gary Beck at OCIR World Finals 1981. | Dwight was at Sacramento on June 27 for the NHRA Western Regional. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.92/229.60. Dwight beat Mike Palmer's 6.05/226 in the first round, with a 5.95/231.96 and a semifinal 6.03/192.31 advanced when Gary Cornwall broke a rear end. He was to face Jim Murphy in the final, but Murphy had blown his engine in the semifinals and was unable to make the final so Dwight soloed for the win with a 9.07. Dwight attempted to qualify for the eight-car show at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he was the fifth alternate with a best of 6.20/230.76. He also failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where his 6.13/223.43 was good for the sixth alternate. |

Notes: This actually was George Schreiber's car. He left it in my care while he went on tour with the jet dragster. George said I could run it if I put it together. I bought the engine out of Swamp Rat XXX from Big, put a little different tune-up on it, allowing for the new lockup clutch, and stuck Howard behind the wheel. I didn't have enough time to complete all my license passes before Pomona. A friend of mine owned Pilot Air Freight and gave me a few bucks to run Pomona. I think that was pretty fast for such an old car. It sure was fun. We purchased the engine from DG in early 1987. Unfortunately, 1987 was a year of huge technological advances, going from 1 to 2 mags and fuel pumps as well as from the 12 to the 14-71 blower. We got all the old stuff, but it did come with Don's tune-up sheets from the runs at Englishtown, where he set the record in 1986 and then flipped the car. It turns out we ran the car at Pomona for the finals in 1987, so that's where your times came from. We were quite behind the 8-ball as we didn't realize until we got to Pomona that Don's sheets were based on a 12-71, and he had sent a 14-71. It seemed lean on fire-up, and so we really had to scramble to get it down the track without burning up, but we finally got in a decent pass. For 1988, Don sent me a 12-71, and we ran that since I was low on dough and couldn't afford to upgrade to the two mags and pumps. - Noel Reese | Fourth alternate at the World Finals at 5.640/254.88. Notes: In 1981 we were low elapsed time during eliminations at the NHRA US Nationals at 5.7 (plus we won the race). Then we were once again low qualifier at the NHRA World Finals at Orange County with a 5.64 ET. In addition to Indy 250 (which was the 10th entry in the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel), we went 247.93 at Irvine, California. | John Abbott Former Coughlin '79 Swindahl. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Tom and Grant came out for their last NHRA national event season in 1987 with appearances at Englishtown and Maple Grove. They were the third alternate at E-Town at 5.643/244.49 and did not get to race. They were the second alternate at Maple Grove at 5.993/190.47 but did make it into the show. There, they lost to Darrell Gwynn, 5.30/259 to 5.804/233.03. After this season, Tom went to work on Wall Street. He came back years later to provide some financial support to many racers, including Jack Wyatt, the Lagana Bros., and others. | "This was the last race for the car. we needed a new car. it was 255 inches and not long enough. 2 speeds were going to high gear only. The beginning of the modern 300 inch, high gear only car we know today. I lost money in October 1987 (Black Monday). I moved to wall street until the early '90s. I came back to Maryland and then Virginia. Then business got good again, and we started to 'sponsor' friends' cars with parts and pieces." - Tom Stephens, Draglist LIVE, 8/16/21 |

Notes: Chris ran well in '85. He was at Pomona for the Winternationals, where he ran 5.82/218.55 to qualify #9. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Larry Minor which Chris lost. The next event was the Gatornationals, and once again, he qualified well. A 5.64/226.69 qualified #6, but he slipped to a 6.18/234 in the first round, that lost to Frank Bradley's 5.84/251. Karamesines attempted to qualify in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, but his best of 5.81/242.06 left him the third alternate for the eight-car show. He did better at the Springnationals, qualifying #11 with a 5.74/246.84, but his parachute deployed during his first-round race against Gary Beck. He ran 5.653/240.64 in a round one win over Ron Smith at ADRA Spokane. Did Chris run 5.62/250.65 somewhere this year (ADRA)? The best NHRA times were 5.648 at Gainesville (#6 qualifier) and 246.84 at Columbus. |

Notes: Lee failed to qualify for the opening event of the '82 season, the AHRA Winternationals. She ran a best of 6.75. She ran almost a second faster at the NHRA Winternationals, where a 5.79/245.23 qualified #8. A first-round 5.92/224.43 beat Doug Kerhulas' 6.23/223, and in the second round, a 5.86/226.13 beat Mark Oswald's close 5.89/242. In the semifinals, she smoked the tires to a 7.33/123.79 and lost to Dick LaHaie's 5.93/234. At the Gatornationals, she qualified #13 with a 5.94/233.60, but a first-round 6.44/221.12 lost to Don Garlits' 6.02/244. Lucille made a big splash at the Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 5.88/236.22 qualified #8, and a first-round 5.92/240 advanced when Larry Sutton broke. In round two, a 5.86/238.09 beat Butch Blair. She stepped up to a 5.65 (Low ET and track record) at 243.24 to beat Doug Kerhulas' 6.20/223. In the final, she met the first lady of drag racing, Shirley Muldowney. In the final, Lee took the victory with a 5.79/236.22 over Shirley's 5.93/240. She didn't have long to wait before she won her next race. That next win came at Atlanta on April 25 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was an eight-car show that had a 5.84 bump. Lee qualified second to her "teammate" Steve Hodkinson with a 5.750/244.56. She then was runner-up to Shirley Muldowney at Columbus. Lucille was a TR-3 secretary. Jolly Rancher also sponsored. Lucille's best times on the NHRA tour were 5.637 at Indy and 248.61 at Englishtown. | 3. 5.778 244.56 NHRA Baton Rouge LA 1984 (Semis) |

His earlier 250.69 at Englishtown on July 17, 1982, was the 15th entry in the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. |

Notes: Kalitta did not have a good weekend at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. On his first qualifying pass, he ran 7.29. Then he returned and ran 6.29 and followed that up with a 6.19. This must have been frustrating as his son, Scott, was running 5.88 and 5.87, and both had Ron Barrow turning the wrenches. Finally, on a last-ditch effort, Connie ran a 5.88/241.28 for the #14 spot. In the first round, he lost to Gene Snow when his motor came up ailing and could only muster a 6.36/181 to Snow's 5.88/241. At the Gatornationals, a 5.65 qualified #4, and in the first round, he raced his son Scott. Conrad won with a 5.85 over a tire-shaking 6.29 by his son. In round two, a 5.72/248.61 beat Jody Smart's 5.81/247. Kalitta had a smile on his face when his 5.66/250.69 beat Shirley Muldowney in the semifinal, but he had problems in the final and slowed to a 7.19/128.20 runner-up finish to Gary Beck's 5.49/251. He finished one spot better at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals when he ran a 6.18/243.90 in the final to beat Jim Barnard's 6.29/241. In the semifinal, he defeated low qualifier Richard Tharp with a 5.81. Earlier, Kalitta had set Top Speed at 245.90. On April 17, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was only an eight-car show, but Kalitta managed to qualify #7 at 5.74/241.93. He beat a tire-smoking Joe Amato in the first round with a 5.73/245.90 before losing to Beck's 5.56/246 in the semifinals with a 5.73/241.93. The following week (April 24), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #4 with a 5.70 and beat Jack Ostrander in the first round before losing to Smart in the semifinals. Things didn't go too well at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he was the first alternate for the eight-car show with a 5.82/237.46. Shortly after that (June 5), he was in Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. It was another eight-car field, and he qualified #5. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Beck. Connie tried hard in their race, but his 5.75/235.60 was no match for Gary's 5.62/246. A week later, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Kalitta qualified #4 with a 5.73/247.25. A 5.74/247.25 in the first round beat Danny Dannell, but a 5.86/236.84 in round two lost to Doug Kerhulas' 5.82/233. Kalitta was still sitting in sixth place in the NHRA TF points standings. Early in July, he made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field but went home early after his 6.72 in the first round fell to Beck's 5.68. A week later, he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. This was another eight-car show, and his 5.71/241.93 qualified #3. He beat Jim Head in round one before losing to the eventual winner, Tharp, in the semifinal. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he ran 5.88/242.58 to qualify #11. He improved to 5.81/244.56 to defeat Denzer Shultz's 6.15/181 in round one, and in round two, a 5.97/220.58 stopped Head's 6.01/234. The car broke against Smart in the semifinal. Kalitta did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Notes: Danny attempted to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals, but his best of 6.00/238.09 failed to qualify. He then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #8 with a 5.93. A first-round 6.05 beat Don Durbin, and in round two, a 5.85/238.72 beat Ray Stutz. His times kept improving, and in the semifinals, a 5.80/242.58 beat Doug Kerhulas. He faced Shirley Muldowney in the final and ran a 5.66 (Low ET) at 247.25 to take the victory over Shirley's 5.90/243. The team then went to Gainesville for the Gatornationals, where Danny qualified #7 with a 5.77/249.30. He beat a motor-blowing Jim Head in the first round before losing to Larry Minor's 5.51/246 in the second round with a 5.80/235.60. At Columbus, a 5.90/241.28 qualified #12 for the NHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Connie Kalitta in the opening round. The team was the runner-up at NHRA Denver. Their best NHRA national event times were 5.716 at the World Finals and 249.30 at Gainesville. Danell had tuning help from Dan Olson and the Fresno-based Eddie's Speed Shop gang.
