Notes: Mike ran really well at Denver in July. He only qualified #10 with a 5.11/261.78 beat in the opening round, his 5.12/270.75 beat Kenny Bernstein. In round two, Joe Amato smoked the tires against him, and he advanced with a 5.32/255.60. Stevie Foster also overpowered the track and smoked the tires against him in the semifinals. Mike moved into his first final since the '93 NHRA Chief Auto Parts Nationals with a 5.36/252.31. But he slowed even more in the finals, running 5.45/232.79 in a runner-up finish to Scott Kalitta's 5.07/270. Mike's best times of the year came in eliminations at the World Finals, where he made it to the semis. He also ran 304.46 at the Keystones in 9/96.

Notes: Goldstein was at Riverside on March 20 for a Jackpot Circuit race. In the opening round, his 7.80/202.70 defeated Ron Matin's 7.96/169. In the semi-final, he fell off to 8.52/196.92 in a loss to Tommy Allen's 7.79/199. The following week (March 26), Leroy qualified #3 a for a sixteen-car show at Lions. In the first round, he nipped James Warren's 7.87/205 with a 7.86/206.88. He then lost in round two. He was back at Lions on April 18 but failed to qualify for the eight-car show. After qualifying ended with a 7.87 bump, Leroy ran a 7.72/196.06, which would have put him in the middle of the field. On May 7, he was back at Lions for another eight-car show. This time, he just made the show with a 7.89/196.97, good for #8. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 7.50/201.78 that lost to James Warren's 7.63/202. The next day, the Jackpot circuit race found the Crower-Blair team at Carlsbad. Leroy fouled against Bill Leavitt in the first round. On May 21, Lions held one of its weekly eight-car shows. Leroy qualified second with a 7.59, and a second 7.59/207.84 lost to Jeff Bliley's 7.82/196. Goldstein was at Irwindale on June 11 for an eight-car show. Although his 7.71 would have easily qualified, he damaged the engine on the run and could not run eliminations. He was at Carlsbad on June 17 but failed to win and the next day (June 18) found the team at Irwindale where a first-round 7.95/200.00 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.60/193. At the HRM Championships at Riverside on June 19, a 7.70/203.16 qualified #21 in the 32-car field. In the first round, he showed his driving talent when his 7.77/200.88 beat Dave Beebe's much quicker 7.52/213. On July 2, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show where he qualified with a 7.68. Unfortunately, he shut off with no oil pressure in the first round. The next day (July 3), he went to San Fernando for another eight-car show. He qualified #3 with a 7.95/197.80 and, in round one, a 7.91/169 beat John Martin. In the semifinals, his 7.92 lost to James Warren's 7.68. Irwindale held an eight-car show on August 20, and Leroy qualified #2 with a 7.73. He won his first-round race with a 7.74/207.84. In the semifinal, a 7.80/196.92 beat Steve Porter's ailing 8.35. He lost to Dwight Salisbury in the final. On August 26, he was a Carlsbad for an eight-car show. He advanced past the first round with a 7.80/203.16, but in the semifinal, Allen's 7.53/190 beat his 7.78/202.24. He was runner-up to Allen at a Jackpot Pro Circuit race at Carlsbad on September 5. His quicker 7.71/210.76 lost to Tommy Allen's 7.76/208 in the final. On September 16, he won an eight-car show at Carlsbad. He beat Jack Jones in the first round, and in the semifinals, Ongais fouled against him. In the final, he got another gift when Allen also fouled. Goldstein ran 7.42/204 for the win. Leroy got himself another big win on September 25 when he won the Fremont Fall Championships. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 7.17 over Gene Winther, and in the final, he ran a 7.65/215.82 (Top Speed) for the victory. On October 8 at Irwindale, Leroy qualified second with a 7.50. He made it to the final against Larry Faust but broke on the line giving Larry a solo (7.78/168.53) for the win. A week later (October 15), he returned to Irwindale for another eight-car show. He didn't do as well when he lost to Beebe in the first round. He went to Carlsbad the next day and won. In the first round, a track record 7.27 at 214.78 beat Dominic Cardoza while he ran an easy single in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Cardoza again, who had gotten back in on the "break rule." Once again, Leroy won, running 7.37/214.28 for the victory. Goldstein advanced past the first round at the Irwindale Grand Prix race with a 7.49/187.10 when Herb Ries lost fire. In the second round, his 7.77/149.50 lost to Tommy Dyer's 7.72/202.

Notes: Runner up at 87 Ennis All-Stars. Also 5.380 at 87 Gatornationals, which was one half of quickest side by side in history with Darrell Gwynn at 5.240. Dan was also half of fastest side by side race in history at the 87 Gators with his 270.43 and Dick LaHaie's 271.00. Best standard NHRA event times were 5.259 Pomona Finals 87 and 271.16 at Gainesville 3/87. | Dan was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.39/269.94 qualified #4. An opening round 5.43/266.90 advanced when opponent Tim Morgan crashed. But in round two, the car failed to fire for his race against Darrell Gwynn. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Pastorini qualified #7 with a 5.42/266.58. He improved to 5.40/271.16 in the first round, to beat Richard Holcomb and in round two, his 5.45/270.43 beat Dick LaHaie’s quicker, but later 5.44/271. Dan made his best run of the weekend in the semifinals, where he ran 5.38/265.64, but it wasn't enough to beat Gwynn’s 5.24/269. The NHRA Winston All-Star race was held in April at the Texas Motorplex. Dan qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.31/267.77. He ran a 5.23/272.39 in the first round, to trailer Connie Kalitta's 5.33/269 and in the semifinals, he stopped Don Garlits with a 5.37/267.85. He faced LaHaie in the final. Dick had run 5.24 twice in eliminations. Rain kept the final from being run until a week and a half later (April 15). In their race, Dan smoked the tires to 6.86/175.16 while Dick got the victory with a 5.37/268. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.58/259.51 qualified #13 and the number proved unlucky as he lost to Garlits in the first round. On May 9, he was at Fremont (Baylands) for a best of three match race against Don Prudhomme. The Funny Car driver was given a 3-tenths handicap. The "Snake" won their first race with a 5.81/237 over Pastorini's 5.72/242. Dan won the second race with a 5.76/240.64 when Don fouled and shut off. In the deciding race, Prudhomme shut off with tire shake and Dan blew an engine, but his 6.65/144.69 rolled across the line first giving him the match race victory. Shortly after that, he was at Tulsa for its Spring race. It was another eight-car show and Dan's 5.85/238.72 qualified #5. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round race with low qualifier Frank Bradley. The two had a good race, but Bradley's 5.69/249 beat Dan's 5.75/250.00. NHRA’s next race was the Cajun Nationals held at Baton Rouge. A 5.56/254.45 qualified #8, but rain held up the event. He and opponent Gene Snow never showed for their first-round race as they both packed up and headed for Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. This was Pastorini's first IHRA event. Dan qualified #2 with a 5.60/257. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.52 at 254 that beat Bob Strauss. He continued to look strong in the semifinals, where his 5.53/258 beat Jerry Marconi. He faced Hank Endres in the final. Things looked good for the "Coors" car, but Dan had a bit of bad luck as the oil pump broke, giving Endres a solo for the title. He enjoyed his first IHRA race enough that the following week (June 7), he went to Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. The field was short so he got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 5.53/259.36. But in the semifinals, he once again had to shut off on the line with no oil pressure, giving John Carey a free ride into the final. He then went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There, he ran 5.65/251.81 to qualify #10. But in the first round, Joe Amato's 5.47/262 beat his 5.79/247.93.

Notes: Shelly started on the NHRA tour late in July at the Mile-High Nationals in Denver. She qualified #8 with a 5.12/252.52, but in round one, her 5.18/264.93 lost to Tommy Johnson Jr's 5.15/271. At the next NHRA event, the California Nationals at Sonoma, Shelly ran her first-ever four-second time, a 4.93 at 297.32 that qualified her #5 in the field. She lost to Doug Herbert in the first round when he got off the line first, and his 5.06/286 held off her quicker 5.02/291.16.ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats.

Notes: The Speed Sport modified roadster campaigned by Lyle Fisher, Gary "Red" Greth, and Don Maynard, one of the more popular cars of its era, produced record-setting performances from 1956 through the early 1960s. Powered by a 354-cid rear-mounted Chrysler Hemi, the 1,500-pound roadster stunned observers with a speed record of 160.14 mph at the 1957 ATAA World Series at Cordova, Ill., and finished the year with a clocking of 169.11 in Tucson, Ariz. Other records include an 8.03/175.78 in March 1960. A 180.72 was backed up by a 179.28 on October 2/1960. The Drag News 1320 Standard Modified Fuel Roadster speed mark was 183.67 eight days later in Alton, Ill. The Speed Sport roadster remained competitive well into the mid-1960s, qualifying for Top Fuel at the 1963 AHRA Winternationals and making its final appearance at the 1964 Bakersfield March Meet. Notes: Chrisman ended the 1958 season on a high note and kept it rolling into 1959. At one of these early-season meets (possibly the Feb. 15 Riverside event), his blower exploded, blowing some of the body off and torching the rest. The exquisite paint job that it had when it appeared on the front cover of the Jan. 1959 issue of Hot Rod Magazine required a redo. On Feb. 15 at Riverside, he took Top Eliminator with a world record time of 8.54 and a speed of 181.81 mph. Two weeks later, he took Top Eliminator at the Bakersfield March Meet. Another feather in his cap. He took another TE win at Riverside on Apr. 19. Could he win the big meets? You're dang right! At Bakersfield on May 3, he clocked 8.41. Hustler I was really cooking. At Riverside on May 10, he ran 8.65 and 180.00 mph. He turned 8.80 at 176.81 on May 24 at Vaca Valley. On a return visit to Vaca Valley, he ran 176.81 mph but cracked a cylinder head. Not to worry. Chrisman-Cannon had another trick up their sleeve-Hustler II was in the wings. The Hustler II was an open-bodied car with the engine exposed, very different in appearance than Hustler I. Art drove Hustler II to a TE victory at Riverside on July 26 on the car's first time out. Things looked very promising with the new car. But after a disappointing outing at Lions and blowing the motor at Fremont, Art went back to racing Hustler I. But misfortune stalked him. He made a run at Fremont in Hustler I on Sep. 13 at 169.17 mph during time trials, but a ring and pinion gear gave out and put him on the trailer. At a 2-day meet at Kingdon the following week, he was beaten by Ted Cyr in the early rounds of eliminations. That was it for the season. Notes: Frank started the '83 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. There was no traction on the track, and Frank's 7.45 actually qualified #7 in the eight-car show. He lost early. Traction wasn't a problem at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals in February. A 5.851/230.17 qualified #10, but he lost to Jody Smart in the first round, 6.34/245 to 8.70/108. In May, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals, where he ran a 6.49 to qualify #3. He beat George Tolon in the first round, but in the semifinals, his 6.36/214.28 lost to Don Garlits' 6.02/234. St. Louis was the next stop on the AHRA trail for the Gateway Nationals. Bradley qualified #5 there with a 5.96/225.01, but in the first round, Jerry Ruth's 5.93/240 beat his 6.12/220.59. On August 1, he was in Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals. Frank qualified #3 with a 5.84/226.13, but his car broke in the first round. He took a big win at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42, beating Garlits in the final, where both drivers ran 5.86. Another win came when he won the AHRA World Finals at Spokane. Bradley qualified #1 with a questionable 5.55 (Low ET). In the first round, he beat Danny Danell with a 5.79, and in the semifinals, he advanced when Dwight Salisbury broke in Gaines Markley's car. In the final, he ran the second qualifier, Tolon. Frank took the victory with a 5.92/241.93 over George's 6.04/221. He attempted to qualify at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals in October, but his best of 5.825/248.61 was good for the first alternate.

Notes: World Champ 1966. Low qualifier at 1966 AHRA Winter Nationals at Irwindale with a 7.58. Ran 7.63/197.80 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/66. Ran 7.58 at Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals. At the NHRA Winternationals, Pete just got into the field (#32) with 7.92, and he lasted until round three where he was leading against Mike Snively until he lost a blower belt and Mike squeezed past for the win. Pete was at Bakersfield for the March Meet on Saturday, March 5, when all 64 cars ran. In the first round, he beat Jim Nicoll with a 7.67/181.80. In round two, a 7.63/193.12 beat Tom McEwen's 7.89. But in the third round, the big SOHC Ford failed to fire. On March 13, Pete won a race at Arlington setting Low ET and Top Speed at 7.43/192.00. Later in March, Pete ran a best of three match race against Don Garlits at Island Dragway. Garlits won the first race when Pete got crossed up, but Don fouled in the second race while Pete ran a 7.8 and in the final race, the Ford's 8.00/193 just plain beat Garlits for the match race win. Another win came on May 22 at Island Dragway for the Division 1 opener. A 7.71 (Low ET) qualified #1 and a 7.81/182 won in the final when Red Lang lost fire. He faced Don Prudhomme for a best of three match at Capitol on June 4th. Prudhomme fouled in the first race and Pete shut off to an 8.52/134 for the win. In the second race, the "Snake's" 7.50/207 beat Robinson's 7.77/193.96 and in the last race Pete fouled away a 7.75/198.66 giving Prudhomme the match race victory. Later in June he faced Ed McCulloch for another best of three match at Woodburn. Ed lost a blower belt in the first race, but he came back to win the second when Pete fouled and shut off to 9.13. The deciding race went to Pete who turned a 7.49/206.88 to win the match over McCulloch's 7.98/158. On August 21, at the NASCAR Nationals at Dragway 42, Pete showed up running a pair of aluminum heads on his SOHC, he qualified #2 with a 7.52 and went on to run 7.48 twice, good for Low ET and a track record. Unfortunately, in the final, his motor let go, and he had to settle for runner-up. - Ron Howard
