Notes: Pomona 5.973 was the 12th entry into the Cragar Five-Second Club. It was the #2 qualifier as well. Unfortunately, Dwight fouled against Don Garlits in round one. He also ran 6.288/222.22 at Indy 1974 (#29 qualifier). Dwight upset Jim Bucher with a massive holeshot in round one, 6.270/215.31 to 6.164/232.55. He shut off against Gaines Markley in round two. Those were Dwight's only two NHRA national events this year. He ran 6.10 at Pomona WCS. The photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. | Dwight qualified #11 with a 6.31/220.58 at the AHRA Winternationals, but he broke the engine and could not run; the first alternate, Dick LaHaie, replaced him. His 5.973/236.22 qualified #2 at Pomona, but he fouled against Don Garlits in the first round. He was the defending champion for the Bakersfield March Meet. But in '74, he failed to qualify for the 32 car field. On his first qualifying attempt, he broke a rear end. The race was postponed a week due to rain, and he ran 6.61 to qualify for the field briefly. On a last-ditch qualifying attempt, he threw a blower belt. Shortly after that (March 2, 3), he was at Irwindale for the Fox Hunt race. His 6.49 qualified on the "bump" for an eight-car car show. He and Gary Hazen had a great race in the opening round that saw Dwight's 6.42/226 defeat Gary's 6.42/222. He ran an easy 7.21/167.59 in the semifinal to beat a tire-shaking, Tom McEwen. Unfortunately, he lost to upstart Frank Prock in the final. He ran at Fremont on March 31 for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Dwight beat an out-of-shape Arley Langlo in the first round, but a 6.34 in the second round lost to James Warren's 6.26. On April 6, OCIR had 42 Top Fuel cars trying to qualify for sixteen spots for the AHRA Grand American. Dwight's 6.30 qualified #3. He made it into the second round before being beat by Dan Richins' 6.49. The NHRA Division 7 Opener at Pomona was an unusual twelve-car show. Salisbury's 6.10/233.16 qualified #3. He beat Bob Noice in the first round, with a 6.33, but he lost to Ray Church in the next round when his two-speed transmission failed to shift. Dwight was back at Irwindale for the third annual T-Shirt Night event. He qualified for the sixteen-car show, but he lost to eventual winner James Warren in the first round. He competed at the PDA Championships at OCIR but lost early. |

Notes: Dennis ran a 5.06/277.69 to qualify #4 at Pomona for the Winternationals. In the first round, he ran a 5.09/277.26 to beat Robert Reehl's 5.18/250. He then beat Gary Beck's 5.40/258 in the second round with a 5.11/269.54. A semifinal pass of 5.18/262.54 lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.05/278. At the Supernationals, he qualified #15 just making the show. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. At Gainesville, for the Gatornationals, Forcelle used a 5.16 to qualify #9. He met low qualifier Joe Amato in the first round, and beat him with a 5.15 to Joe's 5.17. He lost to Darrell Gwynn in the second round. The Southern Nationals was the next stop on the NHRA tour, and once again, Dennis qualified in the top half of the field with his 5.20/255.17 holding position #7. He improved to a first-round 5.17/272.06 to beat Pat Dakin, but against Lori Johns in the second round, a quicker 5.21/270.27 lost to her 5.22/273. Race five on the schedule saw the tour at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. Forcelle qualified #11 with a 5.16/273.55 but lost in the first round, to Gwynn. Darrell had Dennis' number as at the next event, the Cajun Nationals, Forcelle qualified #4 with a 5.16/272.64 and beat Hank Endres in the first round, before losing to Gwynn's 5.23/271 in the second round with a quicker 5.22. Things went better at the Springnationals, where Dennis qualified #13 with a 5.17/272.89, setting up a first-round race against Darrell. Gwynn smoked the tires in that race, and Dennis ran a 5.29/275 for the win. In round two against Ormsby, it was his turn to smoke the hides, and he watched Gary run a 5.12 for the win. The tour then traveled to Canada for the eighth race of the season, the Grandnationals. A 5.21/270.10 qualified #6 and a 5.27/268.09 beat Connie Kalitta's 5.45/270 in the first round. In the second round, an off pace 5.40/267.53 lost to Ormsby's 5.18/278. He jumped ship and raced at the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan on July 2. He did quite well. In the first round, his 5.29/271.87 beat low qualifier Endres who smoked the tires, and a semifinal 5.36/268.43 beat a tire-smoking Jack Ostrander. In the final, he was paired against Gene Snow. Another good run of 5.29/273.58 by Dennis lost to the "Snowman's" 5.25/275. It was back to the NHRA fold the following week (July 9 for the Summernationals at Englishtown. A 5.19/277.69 qualified #10. He beat Amato in the first round, before losing a close one to Eddie Hill in the second round, where they both ran 5.18's. It was then on to the thin air of Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Dennis used a 5.33/255.60 to qualify #6. He beat Toepke in the first round, but a 5.41 in the second round lost to eventual winner Amato who ran a 5.28/264. Dennis' next stop was the California Nationals, where a 5.11/274.89 qualified #6. He lost to Jim Head in the first round. He did a bit better at the Seafair Nationals at Seattle. He used a 5.13/278.37 to qualify #8, and he got past Robert Reehl's 5.24/266 in the first round, with a 5.28/269.78. He lost to Frank Cook in the second round. At the Northstar Nationals, he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot (5.24/263.92), setting up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Dick LaHaie, but in that race, Dick smoked the tires while Forcelle moved on with a 5.24/269.78. He lost in the second round to Snow. At the US Nationals, Dennis hit a bit of a slow streak; his best of 5.15/270.18 failed to qualify for the field. Then at Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals, a 5.27/262.16 was only good for the #15 spot on the grid. Against Frank Bradley in the first round, he had a rear-end break putting him out of the show. The next race was the Chief Nationals at the Texas Motorplex. Dennis qualified #14 with a 5.09/270.10. He lost to Mike Brotherton in the first round. Dennis's best NHRA times were the 5.0689 from Pomona and the 278.37 from Seattle. The Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 1, Winter 89/90 had 279.06. That was not an NHRA speed. Perhaps from IHRA? |

Notes: Robinson was very well-liked in the racing community. He would often help a fellow competitor, even at a match race. More than a few drivers said that if they had to lose to anyone, losing to Pete made it a little easier. He went into the '67 season strong after winning the '66 NHRA World Finals with a track record 7.19. Ford was so happy with the win that they gave him a new Mustang. So Pete started the season in Jan at the AHRA Winternationals. His 7.90 qualified #23, and in the opening round of eliminations, he laid a giant holeshot on Danny Ongais that saw Pete's 7.81 beat Ongais' 7.63 to the stripe. He got crossed up and shut down in the next round, losing to John Mulligan's 7.53. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 7.411/203.16 qualified #18. Robinson was very weight conscious. All his dragsters were lightened wherever possible and then some. His car was the lightest Top Fuel dragster at Pomona; it weighed 1,130 lbs. In round one, he beat Tommy Ivo's 7.44/206 with a 7.33/205.00. In round two, he improved to 7.26/201.78 to beat John Edmunds' 7.58/164. Round three saw him get off the line first, and his 7.34/201.78 beat Jerry Ruth's oh-so-close 7.35/214. He matched up with the only other Ford-powered car in the field in the semifinals, Connie Kalitta's. But for the second race in a row, Pete's car got out of shape, and he shut off, giving eventual winner Kalitta the win at 7.23/215 while Robinson rolled through at 8.65/153.58. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he again made it into the semifinals before fouling against Mike Snively in the "Hawaiian." Pete's best run there was a second-round 7.24. Robinson set a new NHRA Top Fuel record at the first Division 2 race on April 1 at Phenix City Dragway with a 7.08 national record. Unfortunately, he didn't win the race. In the first round, he got an odd-lot single for being the low qualifier, but he fouled against Bill Mullins in the semifinals. On April 30, Pete was in Connecticut for a best of three match against Ivo. Tommy won the first race with a 7.91/196 over Pete's off-pace 8.33/196, but the SOHC-powered dragster came back to win the next two races and the match with ETs of 7.64/193.12 and 7.55/199.10. Ivo's best was a 7.78/202. On May 14, Robinson won the NHRA Division 2 race at Palmetto, NC. A final round 7.10/198.66 beat a fouling Harmon Caldwell. Earlier, he had set a 6.97 track record and had run a Top Speed of 218.44. His speed was a personal best (to this point), being six mph faster than he had ever run before. He met fellow Ford campaigner Tom Hoover for a best of three match at Minneapolis on May 21. Pete won the match two straight with runs of 7.45/216.34 and a track record 7.36 at 206.85. Hoover's best was 7.50/214. He took a big win at Union Grove's Drag Racing Olympics. It was a sixteen-car show, and he ran 7.69/195.62, 7.75/195.65, and 7.57/187 to reach the final. In the final, he faced Kalitta. Robinson ran 7.17 at a track record 219.52 to get the victory over Conrad's 7.61/195. At the end of July, Pete was at Irwindale testing some tires. On one of his runs, the dragster ended up flipping at 222 mph. Robinson suffered a compound fracture in his arm and a broken shoulder. He was out of the driver's seat until the following year. In the meantime, he hired Steve Carbone to shoe his ride. Pete was the last record-holder using a Ford motor, and he won NHRA Division 2 in 1967. Where was the 6.92 run? |

Notes: Won Division 3 1970-71. Garlits chassis with Al Bergler nose piece. Ran 6.74 at St. Louis. The best NHRA national event ET was 6.590. Where was the 6.576 run? | Jim was the last of 19 qualifiers to run a six to qualify for the 32 car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals at 6.999. Unfortunately, he lost to eventual winner Larry Dixon in the first round, 6.88/209 to 7.10/210.77. He did much better at Gainesville on February 15 for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.704/222.22 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field, and an opening-round 6.776/217.39 beat Bob Bofysil. Jim singled with a 7.12/158 in round two when Fred Forkner failed to show in time, and in the semifinals, he got around low qualifier Don Garlits with a 6.83/158 when Garlits had his transmission break. In the final, he faced Dave Chenevert in Robert Anderson's car, and he was late off the line, giving Dave the victory with a 6.74/231 over his quicker 6.613/226.13. Paoli was back at Gainesville at the end of May for the NHRA Division 2 race. He soloed with a 6.87/207.84 in the first round, but his 'chute fell out in the semifinals and slowed him to a 7.90 loss against Preston Davis. At Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 (times unknown), but he lost to Eddie Taylor in the first round, on a holeshot, 6.79/196 to 6.769/218.44. He qualified #13 at the NHRA Summernationals at York, 6.975/222.22. In round one, he beat Marshell Love, 6.859/223.32 (Top Speed of the Meet) to 7.04/212. A foul ended his day in round two, and he shut off to 7.62/116, sending Jim Nicoll on. The 6.59 qualified #9 at Indy (speed unknown), and he ran 6.67/199.55 to beat Bob Williams' close 6.74/214 in round one. Jim shut off to a 17 second run against Brian Budd in round two. Jim qualified #8 at the World Finals at Dallas (times unavailable) and best Gary Cochran in round one, 6.76/194.33 to 6.92/210.77. In round two, he fouled against Gary Biggers, tossing out an excellent 6.62 as Biggers coasted to an 8.20 win. |

Notes: Won PHR Top Fuel 1969. Also 6.88 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/69 and 6.99 at Riverside Hot Rod Magazine Championship. | Steve lost to Bennie Osborn in the first round, at the AHRA Winternationals and then traveled to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where the team failed to qualify. They did much better on February 9 when a 6.94 qualified second at OCIR's second All-Pro race. 35 cars tried to get into the eight-car show. An easy 7.94 advanced when Jeep Hampshire fouled in the first round, and Osborn did likewise in the semifinal, putting Steve in the final. Larry Dixon's 7.24/220 beat his 7.52/216.34 in the final giving the team runner-up money. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a first-round 6.94/218.66 beat a tire-smoking Don Garlits. In round two, John Mulligan lost a blower advancing Steve into the third round where he was to face Dwight Salisbury, Dwight had won his second round race, but had also lost a blower and was unable to repair in time so Steve singled into the semifinal where Dave Babler's 6.96/213 nipped Carbone's 6.96/220.04. On March 16, a 6.99 qualified seventh at the HRM Championships. James Warren fouled against him in the first round, and in the second a 6.80 (Low ET) at 218.97 beat Hank Clark. In round three, another strong run at 6.81/218.97 beat an ailing Stan Shiroma. In the semis he met Don Prudhomme and Don's 7.16/220 was no match for Steve's 6.82/220.58. In the final, he went up in smoke and lost to Dixon's 7.23/205. Another strong run came on March 29, at the final OCIR All-Pro race. A 6.94/206.88 qualified second, and a first-round 6.95/218.44 that beat Dixon's 7.15/203 felt good. He beat Kelly Brown in the semis before meeting Prudhomme in the final. Once again Steve took runner-up honors as the Snake beat him in the final. The next day (March 30), a 7.39 qualified sixth at the Sacramento Top Fuel Championships, but Gary Ormsby's 7.29 beat his off pace 7.60 in the first round. On April 20, NHRA held a South Central Pro Fuel Dragster Circuit race at Amarillo. It was an eight-car show and Steve ran 7.08 over Bryan Teal in the first round, and in the semifinal, Jimmy Nix fouled against him. In the final, he set a 6.99 track record while beating Junior Collins for all the marbles. At the LaPlace Division 4 race on April 27, Steve lost to Dan Rightsell in the first round. The team had an interesting day on May 11 at Tulsa for the second Division 4 race. In qualifying, Steve pulled a gigantic wheelstand that damaged the front end and wrecked the body of their dragster. The team thrashed and repaired the car, running a 7.02 to qualify first. Steve went on to beat Bennie Osborn in the final with a track record 6.87. At the third Division 4 race on May 18 at Corpus Christi, he won his first-round race over Floyd Head, but he slept against Pete Robinson in round two. Pete's 7.42 beat Steve's much quicker 7.24. The team ran well at US 131 Martin, Mich., for a UDRA race on May 30. A first-round 6.89/203.46 beat Jim Lutz and a 6.92/215.20 beat Ron Colson's 6.96/214. But he shut off just a little too early in the semifinals letting Don Cook's 6.87/216 get past his 6.90/197.36. On June 8, the team was at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. Carbone qualified #1 with a 6.79, but smoked the tires to a 7.31 first-round loss to Prudhomme's 6.96. A week later (June 15) they went to Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. A best of 6.98/201.79 failed to make the 32 car show. The team rebounded by winning the Cecil County East-West meet the following week on June 21. It was an eight-car show. It didn't start so well when Steve fouled in the first round, but his opponent Bub Reese got off the track and was disqualified. Carbone was reinstated and made the best of it by running a 6.94/201.78 over a fouling Tom McEwen in the semifinal. In the final, he faced John Mulligan. Carbone set a track record 6.67 to win the event over a motor blowing Mulligan at 8.85/92. |

Notes: Jack was in New York in the first week of July for the IHRA Empire Nationals. His 5.44/263.31 qualified #7, and he improved to 5.27/276.49 in the opening round to beat alternate Steve Litton's 5.52/254. Unfortunately, he hurt some parts and could not return for his semi-final race against Eddie Hill. The following week he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.09/283.01 qualified #15, and he ran a career-best (to this point) 5.04 at 274.80 in the first round to beat a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein. The car broke a rear end in round two, and he had to watch Cory McClenathan solo into the semi-final at 5.01/281. Near the end of the month, he was in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 5.38/267.61. Ed McCulloch's 5.05/271 in the first round sent his 6.00/164.47 home early. Shortly after that, he was at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 5.08/280.63 qualified #13, but McCulloch dropped him in the first round again. He improved on his best at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals, where a 5.03/280.81 qualified #12. Jack qualified on the bump at the 1992 US Nats at 5.066. Jim Hawkins' DragStats confirm ET and speed. He hit bests of 4.904 at Ennis Fall and 288.00 at the World Finals. Photo from Bristol, TN, 1992. |

Notes: Dave was at Sacramento on June 18 for the NHRA Division Seven race. He qualified #3 for the twelve-car field with a 6.01/233.17. An opening round 6.02/233.17 beat Jim Murphy's 6.32/208. In round two, he soloed with a 5.94/232.56 when Shorty Leventon failed to show. In the semifinals, he picked up to 5.90 (Low ET) at 236.23 to beat the always tough James Warren, who lost with a 6.21/182. He faced Larry Sutton in the final and ran another 5.90 at 235.61 for the victory over Larry's 6.23/212. The team debuted on the NHRA tour at Indy in a big way. They qualified #1 at 5.840/246.57, which held up as Low ET and Top Speed. Dave lost a close one to Don Garlits in round three. He ran 5.96/245.23 at Seattle for Low qualifier, Low ET and Top Speed. He was runner up there to Rob Bruins. Dave was the sixth member of the NHRA 250 mph Club on October 7, 1978, at the Ontario World Finals with a 5.820/250.00 #2 qualifying effort. He shared Top Speed with Gary Beck, who had run 5.763/250.00 before him. Rob Bruins took a close 5.95 to 5.98 win over Dave in round two. This 250 mph run is often mistakenly credited at Ontario 1979. |

Notes: Trying to pick a top ten list of Top Fuel cars for '73 was a tough task. Lots of different drivers stepped up. Sure, you would have to have Don Garlits and James Warren on the list, but then who? The Donovan-powered cars of John Wiebe, Herm Petersen, Carl Olson, Pat Dakin, and Flip Schofield all ran great. Marvin Schwartz picked up, as did Tommy Ivo, and Clayton Harris and Don Moody continued to impress. But all those dragsters used a Chrysler Hemi or an aftermarket aluminum version in the Donovan's case. Jim Bucher stood out from the crowd using an aluminum 470 cubic inch Chevy "Rat" motor. He made it work and should be considered for the list. Jim was able to build the engine for far less than it would have cost to build a Hemi. The car was also light, weighing in at some 200 lbs. less than the lightest Hemi-powered cars. You would have to start at Beeline to review his season, where he ran 6.25 to qualify #6 for the AHRA Winternationals. He failed to reach the finals but was by far the quickest Chevy there. In March, he was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.76. An off-pace 7.20/199.11 lost in the opening round. He was not at Bakersfield. But he sure opened everyone's eyes at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Bucher qualified #5 with a 6.179/227.27. In the opening round, he then improved to 6.120/224.43 to beat Randy Allison's 6.70/161. Jim then set a new NHRA ET record in round two, where his 6.079 at 236.22 beat Olson's 6.15/227. An easy pass of 10.77 advanced in the semifinals when Steve Carbone lost fire. This put Jim into the final against Petersen. Unfortunately, the Chevy broke, and Herm soloed for the victory. Jim was at OCIR on May 12 for the Constructor's Championships, where he qualified #15 in the 32 car field with a 6.66. He got to solo in round one, when Dominic Cardoza lost fire. Jim took an easy 9.23/92.49 pass to advance. He also soloed in round two when Carl Olson's car failed to fire. His first race came in the third round, where he shut off with problems, while his opponent, eventual winner Don Moody, was losing a clutch on a 7.25/153 run. On June 2, Bucher was at the Edgewater National Open. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Jim Walther. The two had a great race that saw Walther's 6.56/218 nip Jim's 6.56/217.90. At the NHRA Springnationals, Bucher's 6.461/227.84 qualified #11. An off-pace 6.640/220.58 in the first round, lost to Wiebe's 6.48/220. He ran better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 6.203/223 qualified #7. A 6.52/221 beat Jon Hansen's 6.60/217 in round one, while a second round 6.32/217 advanced when Dakin fouled away a 6.30/223. In the semifinals, Vic Brown broke against him, and Bucher moved into the final with a 6.32/219.51. He faced Harris, who got into the show as an alternate and had not run better than 7.30 in eliminations. The Chevy lovers in the stands were licking their chops, feeling that they would witness a Chevy winning in TF. Things didn't work out that way as once again, the car died, and Jim could only watch as Harris' car coughed and sputtered to 8.72/149 for the win. Jim destroyed the car at Union Grove when it went into a wheelstand and flipped over, landing hard. Jim was OK, but the car was badly damaged. He returned in August to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He set Low ET in qualifying for the sixteen-car field with a 6.12. Jim opened eliminations with a 6.27/184 over a wheelstanding Paul Longenecker and a 6.35/220.04 beat Wiebe's ailing Donovan car at 6.93/137. But a 6.41/207.85 in the semifinal lost to Dakin's 6.32/206. His next stop was at Tulsa for the AHRA National Challenge race. Of course, he had the only Chevy to qualify in the 32 car show, and his 6.30/218.14 got him into the top half of the show (#10). Jim was the number one qualifier at Indy with a 6.091/226.70 effort, leading an incredible field of about 75 entries! Unfortunately for Jim and Chevy fans, Randy Allison stepped up from his #17 qualifying position to upset Bucher in round one, 6.063/229.00 to a consistent but losing 6.099/229.59. Jim ran at the Gainesville WWCS meet in September, where he hit 223.88. He qualified #13 with a 6.68 in high altitude Amarillo, Texas, for the NHRA World Finals. Carl Olson took a first-round win, 6.304/227.27 to 6.396/225.00. At the Ontario Supernationals, Jim qualified #11 at 6.134/233.16. But first-round blues struck again when Dan Richins took a super close 6.070/213.76 win over Jim's booming 6.090/241.28. Jim didn't usually run it out the back door, but he topped 240 on his last pass of the NHRA season. All in all, it was a great year for Bucher and his Ohio Rat, and he won a ton of new fans across the country and globe. | The listed 6.03 did not occur in NHRA national event competition. But we remember it, and it is also cited in a 1996 Chevy Engines book (crediting Jim as the quickest ZL-1 at 6.03). Where did that run occur? |

Notes: Bruce qualified #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 4.82/303.13. In the opening round, he lost to Mike Dunn. He qualified #15 at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 4.90/295.08. He improved to 4.85/263.38 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Joe Amato's 4.81/306. He also qualified #15 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 4.90/281.16 for the spot. A 4.96/276.24 in the first round fell o Scott Kalitta's 4.71/308. The NHRA Slick 50 Nationals at Houston saw Sarver qualify #15 once again with a 4.94/285.26. A off-pace 5.37 in round one lost to Blaine Johnson's 4.73. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. At the biggest race of the year, Sarver failed to qualify for the first time all season. He made his best run, 4.92, 295 on Friday evening, but spinning tires and freak breakage kept him from making full runs on his other passes. |

Notes: B&M began 1968 with the old Sam Vincent chassis that was front-halved by Frank Huszar. Ran 6.914 at Bakersfield 68. At the NHRA Springnationals in Englishtown set Low ET (6.65), but had tire problems in the final, losing to Garlits. Was #5 qualifier at Indy 1968 at 6.852, and Top Speed at 233.76. Also-229.59 mph at OCIR WCS points meet on 9/14/68. The Beebe & Mulligan car held the NHRA speed record at 229.59 mph from September 1968 until July 1970. Also ran four of the quickest 13 ETs and three of the fastest 13 speeds in 1968. In October 1968 they debuted their new Woody car at the World Finals and were runner-up to Bennie Osborn. These guys kicked, butt and they should have won a lot more races. Definitely on top of their game in '68. | Started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. John won his first-round race with a 7.22/216 over Danny Ongais in the "Beaver Brothers" car, but the team didn't last long after that, as their high horsepower combination was too much for the track. On January 28 they were at Irwindale for an eight-car show. Mulligan qualified on the "bump" with a 7.27/182.92 and in the first round, an off pace 7.51/160.42 lost to James Warren's 7.07/218. On February 4, John qualified #19 in the 32 car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.16/217.90. In the first round, John was caught napping, as his 6.96/222.76 lost to Mike Snively's 7.08/219 in the "Hawaiian." On March 3, the team was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. Mulligan lasted until the second round where a seven cylinder 7.21 lost to Marvin Schwartz. Tim Beebe got the horsepower to the ground during qualifying at the Bakersfield March Meet when John laid down a 6.91/231.36 to qualify first. He had Low ET of the first-round as well with a winning 6.94. But he failed to reach the semifinals. On March 24, Beebe and Mulligan where at Riverside for the HRM Championships. John lasted until round two before losing to the eventual winner Steve Carbone. The team got it's first win of '68 on April 6 at Irwindale. And they didn't even qualify. John was first alternate in the sixteen-car show, but he got in when one car fell out with problems. He made the best of it by running a first-round 7.00 (Low ET) at 222.22 over the "Beaver Brothers." In round two, he set Top Speed with a 7.03/230.16 win over James Warren. In the final he beat Ray Ayres for the victory. They were back at Irwindale on May 4, but in the first round, a 7.11/226.12 (Top Speed) lost to Bob Hightower's 7.09/223 in the "Mr Ed" car. Tim was having trouble keeping the big Hemi lit at OCIR on May 25 for a sixteen-car show. John advanced past the first-round with a 7.78/153.06 when Carbone broke in the "Atlas Oil Tool Special." But in round two, another sub-par 7.66/181.08 lost to Bob Downey's 7.25/202. At the AHRA Springnationals at Bristol, John ran two qualifying passes, a 6.94 and a 6.87/226.60 (Low ET and Top Speed) to qualify first. These were AHRA's first six second runs. In the first round, he ran another six, a 6.92, but he lost to Chris Karamesines' 7.04. The following week (June 17) the duo was at Englishtown for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.91/227.27 qualified #4 in the sixteen-car show. In the first round, he beat Tom Hoover with a 7.24. In the second round, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.65/232.55 over Ron Rivero's 6.99/216. He got revenge on Karamesines in the semifinal with a 7.00/216.34 beating Chris' 7.07/216. Tom McEwen helped John install some new tires for the final. Unfortunately, they installed the tires backwards and John lost to Don Garlits. Mulligan picked up another win on June 23 at Aquasco for the President's Gold Cup Championships. He beat Al Friedman in the first round, with a 6.97/210.76 then got a "bye" run in the semifinal. In the final, he took the victory with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.89/216.86 over Norm Weekly. |

Notes: Pomona 5.97 was the 13th entry into the Cragar Five Second Club. Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Ran 6.00 at Pomona WCS, 5.97 at Pomona, 6.14 at Indy, 6.06 at Ontario. | Dwight qualified #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.979/226.70. In the first round, he fouled against Frank Bradley. At the Bakersfield March Meet he qualified #25 in the 32-car show and in the opening round, he beat Bruce Walker. Unfortunately, a second round 6.22 lost to eventual winner Carl Olson, who was setting Low ET in the other lane at 5.94. The team was at Fremont at the end of March for the AHRA Northern Nationals where Dwight's holeshot 6.67 beat Gary Ritter's quicker 6.48 in the first round, but in round two he lost to eventual winner Don Garlits. At the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Pomona, Hughes qualified #1 with a 6.00 (Low ET) at 227.84. He went on to win over a tough field, finally stopping James Warren's 6.38 in the final with a 6.15. After such a strong performance, it was strange to see his name among the non-qualifiers for the second Division 7 race. Dwight got a break when Danny Ongais qualified, but blew his engine in making the field. This put the "Berry Brothers" car into the show. It didn't help as Hughes was napping at the 'tree in the first round, and his 6.15/225.57 lost to Rance McDaniel's 6.25/229. |
