Notes: ACI chassis was Dave Settles. | Gene started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #2 with a 6.35. He worked his way into the finals, where he met with Don Garlits. Gene ran a strong 6.12 but lost to Garlits' 6.08 Low ET of the meet run. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 5.823 247.93 to qualify #6. He had a bit of bad luck, good luck (?) in the first round, when he broke a rear end, but won when Richard Tharp fouled. In the second round, he lost to Jody Smart. Best NHRA times at Indy, 5.629/252.10. |

Notes: Tharp was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, driving for Bob Creitz. Dave Babler fouled against him in the first round, and Tharp advanced with a 7.88. In the second round, it was Tharp who fouled, wasting a 6.86 against Dave Chenevert. The team failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Richard qualified for the third OCIR All-Pro race but had problems in the opening round and shut off early against eventual winner Gary Cochran. The team did not race at the Bakersfield March Meet, choosing to run at Lions instead for the second AHRA Grand American race. Both events were run on March 8. It turned out to be a wise move. Tharp won his opening round race with a 6.62 and then made two easy passes, an "odd-lot" solo in round two, and he shut off early in the semifinals when Jimmy King fouled against him. This famous race had Don Garlits' two-speed transmission explode in the final and rip the dragster in half. That explosion happened while racing Tharp in the final. Richard took the victory with a 6.65/223, but few noticed as everyone was looking at the remains of Garlits' car and hoping that he was alright. He lost half his foot, but otherwise, he was ok. Meanwhile, Tharp went to Dallas International the following weekend(March 15) for a best-of-three-match race against Bennie Osborn. Richard won the first two rounds to sew up the match with times of 7.08/200.44 and 7.01/205.94. They still decided to have a third race, and this time, Tharp fouled away a 6.79/217.91. In April, he was at LaPlace for its Spring Drag Festival. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.92 qualified #5. He faced a low qualifier, Chip Woodall, in the first round, and both ended up smoking the tires. Woodall recovered first, and his 7.15/169 beat Tharp's 7.83/132.54. It was then off to Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. Duane Ong fouled against him in the first round, but Tharp lost in round two. On May 17, the team was at Frontier International for the fourth AHRA Grand American race. The Creitz and Donovan team was one of the eight "seeded" cars on tour, and Tharp's 7.09 qualified #4 among this group. An opening round 7.08/209.79 beat Bob Bofysil's 7.34, but in the second round, his 7.04/216.86 lost to King's 6.97/217. Another win came at Bristol on June 7 for the AHRA Springnationals. Tharp beat Jim Harnsberger in the first round with a 6.90. A second-round 7.07/212.76 stopped a tire-smoking, Chris Karamesines, and he got an easy solo in the semifinal when Jim Nicoll blew his engine on the line. He faced surprise finalist Ed Careccia, and Tharp's 6.76/222.22 easily overtook Ed's off-pace 7.48. He was at Dallas International for the NHRA Springnationals on June 14. He beat Vern Anderson in round one before fouling against Don Moody in round two. Laplace held a Top Fuel vs. Funny Car race on June 21 that saw the FCs get a half-second handicap. The MPH clocks were out for this event. In Richard's first race, he fouled away a 7.05 in a loss to Dick Harrell's 7.69. He also fouled against Tom McEwen in the second race that had Tharp's 7.12 lose to the Duster's 7.41. He won his last race, running a 7.04 to beat Karamesines 'Cuda. The team was back at Dallas International in July for an eight-car show. Tharp's 6.91 qualified #4, and in the first round, his competition, Dale Emery, fouled. He and Eddie Taylor had a good, close race in the semifinals that saw Taylor's 6.88/213 beat his 6.88/218.97. On August 2, the team was at Epping for the AHRA Grand American race. Tharp ran 6.71/222.22 (Top Speed) in the opening round and 6.75/209.75 in round two over Don Cook. In the semifinal, his 6.78/218 lost to eventual winner Jim Nicoll's 6.72. They were at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships the following weekend. Tharp was running strong again, easily winning his first two races. A 6.76/211.26 advanced over Jim Lutz, who broke in the semifinal. He faced Gary Biggins in the final, and Tharp fouled, giving the win to Biggins at 6.98. At the end of August, he was at Bristol for the eighth AHRA Grand American race. In the opening round, he and his opponent, Preston Davis, smoked the tires, but Tharp's 7.70 won over Davis' 8.94. In round his, his 6.76/223.88 fell to Jimmy King's 6.78/223. | Best NHRA national event times were 6.696/217.39. We need to confirm they were in this car (We are not sure what NHRA event he ran the 6.69/217, but it was not Pomona as Low ET there was 6.74, and Tharp failed to qualify. The team did not compete at Indy that had a 6.73 "bump.") |

Notes: Runner up at 1969 NHRA Nationals. Destroked iron Keith Black 426. Photo from 1969 World Finals, Dallas, TX. After Lou Baney's accident with the Folger Ford car at the PDA Championships on July 19, Brown was without a ride. Leland Kolb stepped in and gave Brown a job driving for him. They were very successful the rest of the year. On August 9, they raced at the OCIR Anniversary Race. Kelly singled in the first round, when Bob Williams shut off on the line and in a twin tire-smoking battle in the semifinals, his 7.01/204.08 beat Gary Cochran's 7.54. In the final, James Warren fouled away Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.87/222.77 giving Brown's close 6.88/204.54 the victory. At Indy, a 6.66/222.22 qualified #16. In the first round, Doc Halladay fouled against him. In round two, John Wiebe fouled against him. In the third round, Dave Powers slept against him, running a 6.59/225 that lost to Kelly's 6.71/210.28. In the semifinal, Jim Paoli's clutch exploded and Kelly was in the final. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme. Don ran a 6.51/223 for the win to Kelly's 6.78/205.01 runner-up effort. He won the Division 7 race at Irwindale over a sixteen-car field on September 14. He set Low ET and a track record, in the final with a 6.91/214 that beat Don Argee. And at the Division 7 final at OCIR the following week (September 20), he won again. A semifinal 6.79 over Dwight Salisbury stood for Low ET. In the final, a 6.82/222.22 beat Carl Olson's tire smoking 7.26/201.79. He ran the Irwindale Grand Prix on October 4 where a 7.09/172.74 got past the first-round. He singled in the second round when Pat Foster broke. Don Soltz fouled against him in round three (32 car field), and another foul by Dwight Salisbury put him into the final against Olson. This time, Olson came out on top with a 7.13/196 over Kelly's 7.28/216.34 in a tire-smoking race. A 6.80/213.27 qualified #6 at the NHRA World Finals on October 26. Kelly singled in the first round, when Ken Bernstein's engine wouldn't stay lit, but in the second round, it was his own engine that lost fire giving Bennie Osborn a single. On November 9, he suffered a rare first-round loss at Carlsbad for the PDA Race of Champions event. Salisbury's holeshot 7.71/211 beat Kelly's 7.55/209.78. He more than made up for the first-round loss by winning the next PDA Race of Champions event at Sacramento on November 16, beating James Warren in the final with a 6.75/209.30. |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from the 1992 US Nationals. Jim started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #13 with a 5.06/273.22. He lucked out in round one, when Cory McClenathan had troubles and Head advanced with a 7.15/236.77. In the second round, Mike Brotherton broke and Jim advanced with a 23.26/63.76. He ran over eighteen seconds quicker in the semifinals when his 5.06/277.00 beat Pat Austin. In the final, he was up against Kenny Bernstein and despite running his best time of the meet, a 4.98/279.93 he lost to Kenny's 4.96/281. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 5.11/273.88 qualified #10. He beat McClenathan in the first round, with a 5.09/272.80. In round two his 5.14/268.25 lost to Austin's 5.08/286. Houston was NHRA's next stop for the Supernationals. Jim qualified #15 with a 5.04/279.93. He picked up to 4.99/280.46 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner Joe Amato's 4.98/287. Jim had nothing, but problems at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals and he could only muster a best of 8.98/100.12 that obviously failed to qualify. He did not race at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.07/280.37 qualified #13. He fell off to 5.18/272.06 in the first round, that lost to Amato's 4.94/283. Memphis was NHRA's next stop for the Mid-South Nationals. Jim qualified #10 with a 5.07/279.32, but a first-round 5.23/273.30 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.09/284. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals with a best of 5.23/274.30 that was good for second alternate. Up in Canada at the end of June, he was at Sanair for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.20/279.24 qualified #11. Unfortunately, his first-round bad luck persisted and a 5.30/264.70 lost to Amato's 5.09/281. He failed to make the show at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.12/284.16 was the second alternate. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals or Sonoma for the California Nationals. |

Notes: Photo from 81 US Nationals. 250.00 run at Indy on September. 6, 1981, was the 9th entry into the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. Confirmed 5.947 from Gainesville 3/81. | Failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals, but rebounded nicely by qualifying #2 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet with a 5.90/237.46. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Marvin Graham's 5.95/240. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where a 5.94/226.13 qualified #15, but in the first round, Richard Tharp's 5.91 beat Terry's off pace 6.66/161.29. At the next NHRA event, the Southern Nationals on April 26, a 5.84 qualified #5. He advanced past the first-round with a 5.99/220.04 when low qualifier Mike Tarter fouled. In the semifinal, Jody Smart broke and Terry advanced to the final with a 6.01/234.98. In the final, he ran a quicker 5.91/238.72, but lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.95/239.36. He followed that finish with another runner-up spot at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals on May 24. There, he qualified #3 with a 5.88 and ran a 6.09 in the first round, to get past a blower-popping Tony Ceraolo. In the semi's, a 6.06 beat Smart's 6.11. But in the finals, Capp had problems and slowed to a 7.15 and Jeb Allen won with a 6.11/233. He made another good showing at the NHRA Springnationals in June. He qualified #5 with a 5.92/239.99 and beat Connie Kalitta in the first round, with a 5.98/219. In round two another 5.98/238 beat Mark Oswald (6.02/239). But in the semifinal, Gary Beck stopped him with a 6.11/220. He ran at the NHRA Mile High Nationals on July 4 where he qualified #5 with a 6.03/238.72, but he lost to Allen in the first round. AT the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #12 with a 5.86/239.99. A first-round 6.03/233.76 advanced when Kalitta fouled. A second round 6.02/233.76 got past a tire-smoking Graham, but in the semifinals, it was he who smoked the tires to a 15.52/50.30 loss to Mark Oswald's 5.99/238. In August, he ran in Canada at the NHRA Grandnationals at Sanair, but a best of 5.95/237.46 left him outside (#3 alternate) in the qualified eight-car field. Terry made up for not making the show at the next NHRA event, the US Nationals. There 46 cars tried for the sixteen-car field and he qualified #5 with a 5.72 and made it all the way to the semifinals where despite a quicker 5.80 he lost to eventual winner Johnny Abbott's 5.84. It was then on to Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. Another great run of 5.73/230.17 qualified #5. He beat Lucille Lee's 6.40 in the first round, with a 5.88/235.60, but in the second round, a 5.83 by Tharp ended Capp's chance for the win. He went to OCIR with high hopes for the final race of the season the NHRA World Finals. A disappointing 5.91/234.98 left him out of the show and was #3 alternate. |

Notes: Shiroma started his season at Ontario Motor Speedway's New Year's Day race. He qualified #13 with a 6.67. But his opening round 6.55/225 lost to Flip Schofield's 6.34/208. After that, he went to Irwindale for the Grand Premiere event. He really shook them up there when he qualified on the pole with his 5.86 (Low ET) at 236.84. It was the first time a Chevy-powered Top Fuel car had broken into the 5.8 barrier. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to the eventual winner Rance McDaniel, who was also running a Chevy-powered car. Shiroma ran 6.069/236.22 for the fourth alternate at the Pomona Winternationals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #25 in the 32 car field. In the opening round, he developed some trouble and was shut off on the line. His opponent, Gary Ritter, advanced with a 6.20. He had a bad weekend in Portland on June 6. He was there for the Rose Festival Drag Championships. It was a fourteen-car field, and Stan lost an engine while qualifying #12 with a 6.88. In the opening round of eliminations, he beat Bob Mitchell's 6.22/226 with a 6.20/211, but it cost him another motor, and he was done for the day. Stan qualified #10 at the NHRA Fallnationals at 6.045/223.88 but lost first-round to a Gary Beck holeshot, 6.19/233 to 6.18/217. He qualified #15 at Ontario at 6.053/233.16. In round one, he beat Ray Stutz, 6.35/230.76 to 6.43/235.60, but Dennis Baca got him in round two, 5.99/231.95 to 6.52/193.96. |

Notes: Qualified at Bakersfield March Meet at 7.03. Ran 6.725 at Indianapolis Raceway Park 9/69. | Maas qualified #1 with a 6.82 (Low ET) at 211.76 at the second OCIR All-Pro event on February 9. He slowed to a 7.27/171.75 and lost to Bennie Osborn's 6.98/220 in the first round. He also lost in the first round, at the Bakersfield March Meet when his 6.95/222.22 lost to John Mulligan's 6.88/225. At the Hot Rod Magazine Championships at Riverside, he qualified #24 with a 7.13 in the 32 car field. Once again Mulligan stopped him in the first round. On April 19, he was at an eight-car show at Lions where he set a track record 6.67 in qualifying #1. He also set Top Speed when he beat Larry Dixon in the first round, with a 6.77/227.48. Unfortunately, in the semifinals he got out of shape and shut off. He was at OCIR on April 26 for an eight-car show where a 6.93/213.76 qualified #6, but the run had hurt the engine and alternate Joe Lee replaced him in eliminations. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale on May 24 when he ran a 6.88, but lost to Kelly Brown's holeshot 6.94 in Lou Baney's Cammer. Butch took a big win at the OCIR Benefit race on June 14. He qualified #1 with a 6.97/216.34 and he advanced past the first-round when Glen Woosley fouled. In the semifinals, he stepped up to a 6.92/210.29 to beat Ron Goodsell's 6.98/188. In the final, he beat Sam Davis with Low ET of the meet, a 6.86/210.78. |

Notes: Gene started the season by qualifying #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 4.94/279.41. He lost to Kenny Bernstein in the first round. At NHRA's next race, the Arizona Nationals, a 5.10/273.97 qualified #9. In round one, he advanced with a 5.21/270.35 when Ed McCulloch lost a blower on the line in Larry Minor's car. Snow improved to 5.05/275.22 in round two to beat fellow Texan Eddie Hill at a close 5.08/274. In the semifinals, Gene smoked the tires and lost to Doug Herbert. At Houston, for the NHRA Supernationals, Gene qualified #12 with a 4.99/286.18. Another four, a 4.97/285.26 in the first round, was not enough to get by Mike Dunn's 4.89/297. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where a 5.45/235.23 qualified #5 in the eight-car show. He improved to 5.29/249.30 in the first round, over Mike Smith, but in the semifinals, while racing Herbert, the car broke at half-track, giving Doug the win. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There a 4.96/288.09 qualified #11 for the show. Unfortunately, he lost to Scott Kalitta in the first round. Snow attempted to qualify at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he failed to make the tough eight-car show. |
