Notes: Set National Record at 4.981 (low qualifier) on 9/3/89 at US Nationals (7th entry in the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel) before lowering it to 4.951 at 89 Keystones. Photo from Columbus 1989. Eventually went quicker at Ennis, but lost the record. Listed times from Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 1. Winter 89/90 has 286.53. This was to be Darrell's last full season driving a Top Fuel dragster due to the accident that happened in England in April of '90. He did well, finishing fourth in points in NHRA Top Fuel competition. New sponsor, Coors replaced Budweiser for the '89 season, and Gwynn would have been the first to tell you that things didn't go to well until Brainerd. There he lost in round two, but he ran well and the team left with smiles on their faces. They then won the next two races jumping up in the points. Darrell started the year by qualifying #5 with a 5.08/281.16 at the Winternationals and improving to a first-round 5.07/279.41 over Eddie Hill. Eddie would not have even been in the show after his blow over in qualifying, but the Gwynn team loaned Hill their shape chassis so that he could run. He lost to Frank Bradley in the second round. At Houston for the Supernationals, he qualified #2 with a 5.00/281.25, but in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Frank Cook. Darrell got it all together for the Gatornationals where he ran a 5.13/281.60 to qualify #5. He beat Mike Brotherton, Dennis Forcelle and Earl Whiting with a 5.22/265 in the semifinal. In the final, he was paired against Hill who had lane choice, but Gwynn prevailed with a 5.08/280.72 to Eddie's 5.11/276 for his first win of the year. After his big win, it was surprising that Darrell failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. At the fourth race of the season, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Gwynn qualified #2 with a 5.10/274.55. He set Low ET as well as a track record in the first round, when he beat Chris Karamesines with a 5.09/272.06. Unfortunately, he took a nap on the starting line in round two and despite a 5.14/268.65 he lost to Hill's 5.17/270. At the next event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, he qualified #3 with a 5.05/276.49. Once again he set Low ET and a track record when he beat Forcelle in the first round, with a 5.00. A second round 5.05/277 beat Endres, but in the semifinals, both he and Gary Ormsby ran 5.04's, but Gary got the win. It was on to the Cajun Nationals where Gwynn continued to qualify in the top half of the field. He ran a 5.24 for the #8 spot and in the first round, he beat Whiting. In the second round a 5.23/271 beat Forcelle's quicker 5.22, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Frank Hawley. The next race on the schedule was the Springnationals. Darrell qualified #5 with a 5.08/274.47, but he lost to Forcelle in the first round, when the "Coors" car smoked the tires. The tour shifted to Canada for the Grandnationals where a 5.28/271.00 qualified #8. He beat Paul Smith's 5.34/264 in the first round, with a 5.27/267.77, but in the second round, he fell off to a 5.34/243.04 that lost to Lori Johns' 5.22/272. At Englishtown for the Summernationals, Gwynn qualified #11. It was his worst qualifying position of the season. He did beat third qualifier Endres in the first round, and in round two Gene Snow smoked the tires against him and his 5.32/271 took the win. But in the semifinals, Ormsby beat him with a 5.18/281. The tenth race of the season was at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Gwynn qualified #8 with a 5.34/263.31 in the thin air. He beat Bradley in the first round, but lost in round two to Dick LaHaie. The California Nationals was the next stop and a 5.13/280.63 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot setting up a first-round race with low qualifier Bradley. In the race, Bradley beat him by a tenth with Frank's 5.06/285 defeating Darrell's 5.16/281.42. At the next event, the Seafair Nationals, Gwynn tied his worst qualifying position with a 5.17/276.07 getting the #11 spot. In the first round, Ormsby beat him with a 5.04/283 to his 5.19/259.59. By this time, Darrell and crew chief Ken Veney were both getting hungry for a win; it was now the middle of Aug, and they hadn't won since March. So they pulled into the Northstar Nationals a little more anxious to win than normal. A 5.18/270.35 qualified #3 and Darrell stepped up to a 5.12/275.98 in the first round, over Jim Head, but in round two he overpowered the track to a tire-smoking 6.45/147.37 that lost to Joe Amato's 5.20/275. Regardless of the rest of the year, the next race made the season. That race was the US Nationals at Indy. Darrell set a track record 4.98 in qualifying. It was his first pole of the year and it came with a speed of 282.48. He beat Robert Reehl in the first round, and in round two he got some measurement of revenge by beating Ormsby's 5.07/285 with a 5.04/280.72. In the semifinal, a consistent 5.04/281.51 beat Hill's 5.09/276. In the final for the gold, he met LaHaie and ran another 5.04/280.46 for his second win of '89. He didn't have to wait long for his third. At the next race, the Keystone Nationals, he qualified #2 with a 4.98/284.99. A first-round 5.00/281.86 beat Cook, and in round two, a 4.96/282.75 beat Head. He set Low ET and a track record 4.95/281.16 in beating LaHaie's 5.00/281 in the semifinal. In the final, he ran Amato and another 4.95/281.77 was enough to cover Joe's 5.01/285 for his third win of the year. The next event was the Chief Nationals at the Texas Motorplex. Darrell qualified #4 with a 4.96/286.25. In round one, he ran a 4.98/284.45 to beat Head and in round two, a 4.99/285.62 beat Cook. He made an easy run (?) of 5.03/282.66 in the semifinals when Brotherton broke to advance to the finals. In the final, he ran a strong 4.94/279.85 that lost to Ormsby's 4.97/291. He made the finals of the next race as well, the Fallnationals. Gwynn qualified #2 with a 5.07/278.37, but in round two he beat Ormsby's 5.16 with Firebird Raceway's first four, a 4.99/278. In the semifinals, he beat LaHaie with a 5.08/278. In the final, he ran Shirley Muldowney, and she got a slight holeshot and hung on for a popular win with her 5.05/275.48 beating Darrell's slightly quicker 5.04/278. At the season-ending World Finals, Darrell set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 4.95/285.98. He beat Brotherton in the first round, with a 5.01/282.75, but fouled away a 5.00/283.10 in the second round against Ormsby, bringing his season to a close. |

Notes: Ran 4.983 at NHRA Indianapolis on September 3/1989, to become the sixth member of the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel. Photo from Columbus 1989. Confirmed 287.63 MPH at Ennis Fall 89, but MPH from Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 1., Winter 89/90 listed 287.90. Where was that run? | The Miller American cars were owned by Dick LaHaie, not Larry Minor. Larry had the sponsorship deal and got Dick to run his car under the colors while Minor raced his own (ex Gary Beck) car and the funny cars. - Dick LaHaie, Racin & Rockin Radio, 2/24/14 | LaHaie finished the season third in points. I'm sure he went into the year expecting to win more than the three national event wins that he got. But it was still more NHRA wins than he had gotten in '88. The season started with Dick running 5.16/279.32 to qualify #11 at the Winternationals. He lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.05/288 in the first round, with a 5.09/277.43. At the Supernationals, a 5.07 gave him the dreaded #9 qualifying spot and setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Joe Amato which he lost. He qualified in the top half of the show at the Gatornationals when a 5.13 was good for the #6 position. He got past the first-round for the first time this season, but in the second round, he had a tire-smoking battle with Hank Endres and lost. Things had to change and they did at the next event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. LaHaie took the pole with a 5.10/281.69. He beat Frank Bradley's 5.23/277 in the first round, with a 5.15/282.92 (Top Speed). In round two a consistent 5.16/278.46 beat Frank Hawley and in the semifinals a 5.18/279.32 beat Lori Johns. He went on to take his first victory of '89 with a final round 5.13/281.77 over Eddie Hill's 5.19/267. The NHRA tour then swung to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals where Dick qualified #6 with a 5.10/284.18. He beat Kalitta in the first round, and a 5.08/284 beat Johns' 5.19 in round two. But in the semifinals against Hill, he had a strut that held the rear wing in place break. It unloaded the car and LaHaie did a great job in bringing the car to a safe stop. The sixth race of the season was the Cajun Nationals. Once again he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.24/277.09 setting up a first-round run against low qualifier Frank Cook. This time, LaHaie won the first-round race and in round two he left on Bradley and won with a 5.22/277 to Frank's quicker 5.19. He overpowered the track in the semifinals and smoked the tires to a loss against Gene Snow. A 5.10/286.07 qualified #8 at the next race, the Springnationals. He beat Paul Smith in round one, but in the second round be lost to Jim Head when they both smoked the tires. It was up to Canada for the Grandnationals in late June. He ran a 5.21/280.54 to qualify #5. A first-round 5.20/279.67 beat John Carey. He improved to a 5.13/282.13 in round two to beat Bradley's 5.17/279. In the semifinals, Amato's 5.25/268 fell to Dick's 5.14/279.58. In the final, he ran Gary Ormsby and a 5.21/274.55 was good for the runner-up spot to Gary's 5.15/278. LaHaie got his second win at the next race, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 with a 5.10/283.37 and took out Carey in the first round. In the second round, he ran a solo 5.19/275 when Cook was unable to show. In the semifinals, a 5.15/280 beat a tire-smoking Hill. In the final, he reversed the outcome of the last race when he met Ormsby. A final 5.11/282.04 gave Gary's 5.24/271 the runner-up spot. The thin air of Denver was the next stop for the Mile High Nationals. Dick ran a 5.26/270.51 in qualifying #4. He beat Mike Brotherton in round one, and a 5.35/244 beat Darrell Gwynn in round two, but in the semifinals, both he and Amato ran 5.22's with Amato getting the win. From there it was off to Sonoma for the California Nationals where a 5.06/283.64 qualified #3. He beat Lori Johns in the first round, with a 5.07/281.60, but he broke and was unable to run Gordie Bonin in round two. Dick was runner-up at the next stop, the Seafair Nationals at Seattle. He qualified #6 with a 5.09/285.53 and in round one, a 5.11/283.82 beat Bonin's 5.52. In round two, a consistent 5.10/282.84 beat Bradley's 5.19/278. A semifinal 5.11/281.42 beat Cook's 5.22/275. But even though he stayed consistent in the final with a 5.10/278.98 he lost to a strong running Amato at 5.01/278. At the thirteenth race of the season, the Northstar Nationals, Dick qualified #1 with a 5.12/279.85. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires to a 6.33/160.82 first-round loss to Dennis Forcelle. He ran Indianapolis' first four during qualifying, a 4.98/285.44 that eventually held for the #2 qualifying spot. LaHaie beat Pat Dakin in the first round, and in round two, a 5.06/276.20 beat Johns' 5.13/274. In the semifinals, a 5.01/280.72 beat a tire-smoking Amato. In the final, he ran Darrell Gwynn and he overpowered the track to a shut off 17.11/48.44 while Darrell took the win with a 5.04/280. |

Notes: Finished second to Amato in WC by 92 points - didn't go to Grandnationals due to funding. Had he even qualified there and then matched the rest of his season, he would have been the world champ. First top fueler in the 4.70 zone. Speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Also 289.38 at Houston 92 and 293.82 at Maple Grove 9/92. |

Notes: In 1969, B&M won the Winternationals in their 392-powered Woody car, which had debuted at the 1968 World Finals. By mid-summer of '69, the team had changed to a Ramchargers-sourced elephant motor. Qualified #1 (6.43) at Indy '69 with an all-time quickest ET on a low qualifying pass. The stunning time stood as the sport's best for a year. John ran three of the 15 fastest speeds in 1969. Originally listed a 241, but that time was not supported by Beebe-Mulligan.com, which cited a best 1969 speed of the 233.22 from Riverside. John died at Indy 1969 when he had a terrible fire during a first-round win. See racer website for details. - BM | Beebe-Mulligan reset the track record at Union Grove two days running in early June '69, with a 6.70 following the previous day's 6.71. - RT Mulligan started his '69 season at the AHRA Winternationals, where a 6.99 qualified second. As mentioned above, he failed to make it into the later rounds, but Pomona was a different story. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified with a 7.16/225.00. A first-round 7.12/221.13 beat Tom Larkin's 7.24/206. In round two, a 6.86/222.77 beat James Warren's 7.14/214. Bennie Osborn's 7.42 fell to John's 6.86/221.13 in the third round and a 6.93/217.91 beat Leroy Goldstein in the semifinal. For the win, a 6.95/211.38 beat Don Prudhomme's 8.52/126. It was quite a win, considering 82 cars fought for the 32 spots available. At the second OCIR All-Pro race at OCIR on February 9, a 6.94 qualified #3, but he lost a blower belt in the first round, slowing the car to a 7.11/208.80 that lost to Dave Beebe's 7.01/211. At the Stardust Open on February 16 at Las Vegas, a 7.12 qualified #2. Mulligan singled in the first round, when Tommy Allen's car wouldn't stay lit. In the second round, he set a 6.85 track record while beating Hank Westmoreland. In the semifinal, Ron Rivero lost to John's 6.90/221.57, setting up Pomona finalists in a rematch. This time, Prudhomme came out on top with a 6.94/216, beating John's 7.10/211.76 runner-up effort. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.88/225 beat Butch Maas' 6.95/222 in the first round, but in the second round, he lost a blower and the race to Steve Carbone. On March 16 at Riverside for the HRM Championships, John qualified #8 with a 7.01. In the first round, he beat Maas again with a 7.10/233.22 (Top Speed). A 7.14/216.86 beat Jerry Ruth's quicker 7.02/219 in round two, but he hurt some parts and could not return for the third round bringing Ruth back into the show on the break rule. Mulligan set Top Speed again at the final OCIR All-Pro race on March 29, when a first-round 7.06/222.76 beat Gerry Glenn. Against Prudhomme in the semis, he had a violent engine explosion and lost. He was not hurt. On May 30, he won over a sixteen-car field at US 131 Martin, Michigan. The times he turned here were strong. He opened up with a 6.62/232.55 (Top Speed) over Duke Ray in the "GuZler." In round two, he set Low ET with a 6.60/230.76 over Tommy Ivo. Prudhomme shut off on the line in the semifinal, and John still rocketed to a 6.67/231.36 on his single. In the final, he met and beat Don Cook with a 6.65/230.17. All four of his runs were in the 6.60's and all over 230 mph. His 6.60 and 232.55 were both track records. Nobody else there ran better than a 6.87, and nobody else even ran 217. It was quite a performance by the team. Shortly after this, John was the recipient of the Mike Sorokin Memorial Award. His peers voted for this award. Was John's Indy #1 qualifier a 6.437 or a 6.430. We show it in different ways but trying to find the final word. |

Notes: NHRA World Champ in 1987. Won inaugural All Stars race with best of 5.24 at 276.15 at Ennis (finals held at Southern Nationals after finals rained out in Ennis). Set the national record at 5.171 at 87 Summernationals (low qualifier) before resetting the record to 5.124 at Keystones, then went 5.118 to qualify number one at the World Finals. Also went 5.124 at 87 Cragar Classic. Ran 271.00 at 87 Gators and 274.13 at 87 US Nats, 281.07 at Cragar Classic, and 278.55 somewhere. Photo from Columbus 1987. | Dick LaHaie, not Larry Minor, owned the Miller American cars. Larry had the sponsorship deal and got Dick to run his car under the colors while Minor raced his own (former Gary Beck) car and the funny cars. - Dick LaHaie, Racin & Rockin Radio, 2/24/14 |

Notes: John Harbert hired Bob Tapia to drive his "Pegasus" in '64. The team ran well, Bob's first run in the car was 7.84/200.00. The second time out the team raced at San Fernando where he ran 7.67 and 7.72 at 201.48 for a new strip record. Bob was at Lions for its Anniversary Race on September 26. He qualified #1 with an 8.10/197.80. The track was slick and the team didn't think that their time would hold through qualifying so they loaded up and went to Fontana where they ran a track record 7.54 at 204 and went on to beat Bob Downey in the A&W Root Beer car in the final. After the win they stopped at a restaurant and made a call to Lions to see who had Low ET and Top Speed. It turned out that their morning run had held for Low ET and Top Speed (back then you got paid for Low ET and Top Speed). Tom McEwen had tried all day to better Bob's ET and failed. So that day, they had set Low ET and Top Speed at two different tracks. On November 11, Tapia faced Fisher and Greth for a best of three match at Beeline and won, turning a best of 7.82/195. The following week, the team won at Lions, beating the feared Greer, Black and Prudhomme car on the way to the win. The next day they won a race at San Fernando where Bob set Low ET and Top Speed. John Harbert wanted to go back to driving again and in January '65 he returned to the wheel. |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. The 4.909 was the low qualifier. After Gwynn's accident at Santa Pod England in early spring of 1990, Frank Hawley stepped up to drive the car at the SpringNationals in Columbus. Not only did Hawley qualify No. 1 with a Low ET of Meet 5.04/275, but he won the event by defeating Joe Amato in the final. |

Notes: Won dramatic US Nationals event over Jim Nicoll's clutch-splitting crash at the top end. Ran a string of 6.40s, eventually tying John Mulligan's 6.43 all time quickest run from Indy 1969. Also ran 6.52 at Fremont. | Don qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.82. He lasted until the third round where a wheelstand against Tommy Ivo cost him the race. Prudhomme was spending more time with his FC, but he did show up at Fremont in his Dragster for the Northern Nationals. Sixty-six cars attempted to make the sixteen-car field. Don got in easily and ran a 6.55/220.58 over Gary Cochran's 6.85/215 in the first round. In the second round, a 6.59/220.58 beat John Wiebe's 6.85/222. In the semifinals, Don set Low ET of the meet with a 6.52/222.22, but he fouled and lost to Ron Hampshire. |

Notes: Shelly was impressive at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals. She qualified #3 with a 4.79/297.91 and went on to win the race. Anderson had a bit of luck along the way as in the first round, both she and Clayton Harris smoked the tires with her 6.43/185.03 getting the win. In round two, Shelly's 4.87/293.06 beat Mike Brotherton's 5.03/285, and another tire-smoking 6.53/146.60 advanced in the semifinals when Pat Austin lost a blower. In the final, she met Top Fuel veteRance McDaniel and her 5.46/178.74 got the win over Rance's 7.42/107. At NHRA's second event, the Quality Care Nationals at Arizona, she continued to qualify well, running 4.81/292.77 for the #4 spot in the field. Unfortunately, a 4.98/244.83 in the first round, loss to Mike Dunn's 4.86/277 in Darrell Gwynn's car. The next race was at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. A 4.79/292.30 qualified #6, and she lasted until the second round, where she crossed the centerline while running Scott Kalitta. Shelly was #6 again at the NHRA Gatornationals, where a 4.88/290.88 got her the spot. Anderson won an excellent first-round race against Eddie Hill, where his 4.92/293 lost to her 4.89/291.16. In round two, her tires broke loose, and she shut off to 9.91/83.54 that lost to Bobby Baldwin. Keith Black, BAE combination was banned after the 1994 season. (We need confirmation). ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. The 4.718/302.11 best NHRA times were the low qualifier at the Pomona Finals. Shelly topped 300 a few other times as well. |

Notes: Bernstein started the '94 season by testing at Bakersfield at the end of January. He reset both ends of the track record to 4.80/300. He made four other runs but shut down early on each of them. Kenny qualified #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 4.81/297.71. But in the first round, his 4.86/292.87 lost to Mike Brotherton's 4.83/284. Things didn't go much better at the NHRA Quality Care Nationals in Arizona, where his 4.90/297.02 qualified #15, and he lost to Joe Amato in the opening round. It went even worse at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. Bernstein failed to qualify for the first time since entering Top Fuel competition in '90. After running 4.96/284.81 on the opening day of qualifying, every other pass saw the car go up in tire smoke. His time was good for the first alternate. Gainesville went much better for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #9 with a 4.89/296.44. An opening round 4.91/293.63 beat Jimmy Nix's 4.92/282, and a second-round 4.93/291.45 stopped Jim Head’s 5.03/276. But in the semifinals, he lost a motor against Scott Kalitta, and his fireballing 5.21/225.84 lost to Scott's 4.79/305. It was another bad day at Rockingham for the NHRA Invitational race in April. Kenny was the third alternate for the eight-car field with a 4.93/297.52. Atlanta was the next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 4.88/296.54 qualified #4, and a first-round 5.07/287.63 beat Stevie Foster's 5.16/279. But he lost to Eddie Hill in round two. Dale Armstrong was working hard on getting the team on the right track, and they showed progress at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Bernstein qualified #6 with a 4.89/296.83, but more importantly, his first-round 4.81/300.40 beat Nix. Why was it more important? It was the first time Bernstein ran 300 since he last did it at the '92 US Nationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Tommy Johnson Jr. in round two. He went home early at the NHRA Mopar Nationals at Englishtown, where he lost in the first round when he smoked the tires. Another first-round loss occurred at Columbus. In mid-June, he was there for the NHRA Springnationals and ran 4.95/298.40 to qualify #8. A slightly better 4.91/298.80 in the first round lost to Blaine Johnson's 4.90/297. Kenny was the first car over 310 with a 311.85 blast at the World Finals, followed by this 314.46 national record. Ran the 4.720 on the same clutch pass – in the final over McClenathan’s 4.798. |

Notes: Larry set Low ET at Pomona in qualifying #1 with a 5.434 at 250.13. He beat Chris Karamesines in the first round, and a 5.52/250 beat Bill Mullins in round two. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Gary Ormsby. At Gainesville for the Gatornationals in March, a 5.64/255.24 qualified #5. Minor had problems in the first round and shut off, giving Grant Stoms an easy ride into round two. At NHRA's third event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Larry ran 5.62/253.52 to qualify #3. It was a tough field to make as the bump spot for the eight-car show was a 5.72. Larry beat Ormsby in a close first-round match with his 5.72/243.24 prevailing over Gary's 5.73/258. Unfortunately, in the semifinals, he lost to Don Garlits' 5.62/265 with an ailing 6.32/156.84. Minor got another pole position in May at the Bakersfield Meet. His 5.62 (Low ET) at 233 got the spot. He lost to Don Durbin in the first round. His Pomona and Gainesville numbers were his best for the 1985 NHRA season. Photo from the 1985 US Nationals at IRP. |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from Columbus 1989. Also 4.967 and 290.32 at Maple Grove 9/89 and 4.996 low qualifier at 89 Houston Supernationals on March 3/1989, which was the fourth entry in the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel. Amato waged a war with Gary Ormsby for the NHRA Top Fuel Championship that went down to the final race. It was wire to wire between the two the whole season. It started at the Winternationals where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.04/280.81. He lost to Frank Bradley in the first round. The Supernationals at Houston was the next race and once again Joe set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 4.99. He beat Dick LaHaie in the first round, with a 5.11 and a 5.09/281 beat Jim Head in round two. In the semifinals, he beat Frank Hawley with a 5.04/285 to go into the final against Ormsby. In the final, Amato took a nap at the line and lost to Gary's 5.09/278 with a quicker 5.03/288.63. Gainesville hosted the Gatornationals on March 19 and for the third straight event, Joe set Low ET in qualifying #1 (5.05). Unfortunately for Amato, a 5.15 by Dennis Forcelle beat his 5.17 in the first round. He was father down the qualifying sheet in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 5.20/275.81 gave him the #8 spot in the field. He picked it up to a 5.15/270.51 in the first round, to beat Shirley Muldowney's 5.28/261. But in round two he fell to Ormsby. At Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals, a 5.06/278.12 qualified #4. In the first round against Eddie Hill, he smoked the tires and lost. At the sixth race of the season, the Cajun Nationals, he qualified well with a 5.15/277.77 for the #3 spot, but he again lost in the first round, this time to Gene Snow. He broke through for his first win of '89 at the Springnationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.10/278.98. Joe beat pat Dakin, Lori Johns (with a 5.08/284), and Ormsby in the semifinals to set up a final round match-up with Hank Endres. In that final round race, Endres tried hard with a 5.22/266, but it was Amato's day and he won with a 5.12/280.72. The NHRA tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. Joe qualified #3 with a 5.17/272.31. In the first round, he dispatched Head's 5.32/267 with a 5.22/275.48. He beat Hill in round two with a 5.28/272.56 to Eddie's close 5.29/272. In the semifinal, Joe ran a 5.25/268.65 that lost to LaHaie's 5.14/279. Race number nine of the season was at Englishtown for the Summernationals. A 5.08/286.18 qualified #2, but he took a first-round loss by Forcelle. Things went more his way at the Mile High Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.22/268.57. He beat Muldowney in the first round, and in round two, a 5.28/264 beat Forcelle's 5.41. In the semifinals, both he and LaHaie ran 5.22's with Joe coming out on top. In the final, he met Ormsby and a 5.21/266.11 covered Gary's 5.33/270. It was Joe's second win of the year. He almost got another win at the next event, the California Nationals. There he qualified way down in the #12 spot with a 5.15/284.18. He advanced past the first-round with a 5.13/270 when opponent Jack Ostrander broke. In round two he beat Hill with a 5.06/282.39 and in the semifinal, a 5.09/282.39 beat Head. In the final, he met Low ET setter and low qualifier Frank Bradley who beat Joe for the title. He made his third final in a row at the Seafair Nationals at Seattle International. He qualified #1 with a 5.03/282.84 and another 5.03 at 280.72 in the first round, beat Hill. In round two a 5.10/278.51 beat Mike Brotherton and in the semifinals, he took a big win over Ormsby with a 5.07/273.88. In the final he ran LaHaie and even though Dick ran a strong 5.10/278, it was no match for Amato who set Low ET with a 5.01/278.98 in winning his third race of the season. The fourth win came pretty quick, it was at the next event, the Northstar Nationals. He had his worst qualifying spot of the season there when he ran a 5.39/255.75 for the #15 position. In the first round, he picked up to a 5.14/279.15 to beat Bradley's identical 5.14/278. He beat a tire-smoking Darrell Gwynn in round two with a 5.20/275.73 and in the semifinals, a 5.16/277 beat Snow's ailing car. In the final, he ran a 5.24/278.81 over Muldowney for the win. Things didn't go as well at Indy for the US Nationals. Joe qualified #4 with a 5.02/286.16. He beat Frank Cook in the first round. In round two he caught Bradley napping and won with a 5.16/287.08 to Frank's 5.11/274. But in the semifinals, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires to a 10.56/74.96 loss to LaHaie's 5.01/280. The next event was the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. A 5.01/283.82 qualified #5 and in the first round, Joe advanced with a 5.00/288.55 when John Carey fouled. He cracked into the fours in round two, running a 4.96/290.32 over Muldowney's 4.97/287. He stayed in the fours in the semifinals with a 4.98/288.18 beating a tire-blazing Ormsby. But in the final, when he definitely needed to run a four, a 5.01/285.98 came in second best to Gwynn's 4.95/281. At the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals, Joe ran a career best (to this point) of 4.95/288.18 to qualify #3. He beat Gene Snow in round one, with a 5.02/286.18 and in round two, a 5.07/287.17 beat Hill. But a semifinal 5.01/291.26 lost to Ormsby's 4.98/289. The second last race of the year was the Fallnationals at Firebird raceway. Joe qualified #3 with a 5.07/280.81. He beat an engine blowing Ed Moore in round one, and a 5.11/277 beat Lori Johns in round two. But a semifinal 5.14 lost to Muldowney's 5.16. |
