Notes: Leroy went 7.066/219.50 to qualify #7 at the Pomona Winternationals. He lost to Ron Rolstad in round one on a holeshot, 7.28/187 to 7.271/216.34. Goldstein was at OCIR on March 3 for the PDA Championships. He lost early in eliminations. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #8 in the 32 car field with a 7.01. In the opening round, his .23/205.46 defeated Pat Foster's 7.70/196. In round two, he used a 7.01/205.46 to eliminate Frank Martinez's 7.26/199. Goldstein had a coasting contest with Bennie Osborn in the third round when both shut-off. Leroy crossed the stripe first. He caught a good light in the semifinal, and his 7.15 beat hometown favorites James Warren's 7.12. The final was between him and Ron Rivero driving the "K & G Speed" car. Unfortunately, the "Weinerschnitzel" failed to fire, and Rivero soloed for the title. On April 6, he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. He downed the Chevy-powered car of Bob Brooks in the opening round with a 7.40.26 but lost in the following round. Soon after, Fresno held a twelve-car show, and Leroy qualified #4 with a 7.23. But in the opening round, he fouled and shut down to 10.96/81.81 in a loss to Dan Madigan. The Texas Pro Fuel Circuit ran at Green Valley Raceway on May 11, and Goldstein qualified #3 for the eight-car field with a 7.47/175.09. He lost fire against the "Northwind" in the first round. He went to Tulsa for another Texas Pro Fuel Circuit race the next day. Thirty-four cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Leroy qualified easily and lasted until round two, where he fouled against eventual winner Vic Brown driving the "Creitz & Greer" car. On June 1, Amarillo held a Texas vs. California race. All eight cars there were to make three runs each. In the first race, Goldstein's off-pace 8.32/104.80 lost to Larry Brown's 7.64/210 in the "Chaos Kids" car. In his second race, a 7.29/221.26 beat Gary Bailey's 7.54/207. Another off-pace 8.24/124.18 lost to Dwight Salisbury's 7.77/168 in the "Beach Boys" car in round three. It looked like he was on the way to winning the AHRA Springnationals. In the semifinal, he got to solo when Chris Karamesines lost fire. Then the other two semifinalists were both eliminated when Vic Brown fouled, and Don Cook crossed the centerline. So Karamesines was brought back into the show on the "break rule," and the two lined up again. This time for the title. But Leroy's clutch went away, and the "Greek" ran 7.02/216 for the victory. #2 qualifier at Indy 1968 at 6.715/219.50 and made it three rounds. Also 7.014 at Bakersfield March Meet 68. Confirmed 6.90 Green Valley. The team was based in San Diego and featured Leroy and Jim Nicoll. Did Jim own the team?; Photo: Hot Rod Archive Series, no. 6, Hemi Power (Winter 2007), p. 22 - MB

Notes: Runner-Up at Pomona. Photo from 1963. | Connie Kalitta started the season running on gas. His runner-up finish at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals came when a water line broke in the final, and spewed water onto his slicks causing him to lose traction. Less than a month after that, finish he switched to fuel. The first time running fuel came at San Gabriel. The best run he made was 8.64. The day before, he had run 8.34 on gas so his debut wasn't the greatest. Two weeks later, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Unfortunately, he lost to Art Malone in the first round. Connie set a 189.48 mph Detroit track record on July 6.

Hank ran 5.71/243 for the victory. The following week (June 7), he was at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. Things didn't go as well there as he broke on the line in the first round against John Carey. Hank was the second alternate at Columbus at 5.809/248.07. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. His season came to an end at Milan, Michigan. He was there in the first week of July for the IHRA Northern Nationals. His 5.58 had qualified #4, and in round one, things took a turn for the worse. His opponent, Earl Whiting, had fouled, and Hank didn't see it and was running hard. The car got out of shape, and he went into and over the guardrail. It was a pretty bad crash as the car was destroyed. Hank was taken to the hospital and released soon after. Notes: AKA The Carpetbagger. Best times at NHRA Ontario at 5.870/234.37. | Baca started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 6.07/216.86 best failed to make the field. His next showing was at the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.09/229.00 qualified #10 in the 32 car show. But he was a little late off the line in the opening round, and his 6.18/226.13 lost to Gary Cochran's 6.22/224. Later that month, he won an eight-car show at Sacramento. Dennis had set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.01, and in the first round, his 6.31/193 beat Shorty Leventon's 6.41/218. Gary Ormsby was shut off on the line with a fuel leak in the semifinals, and Baca's 6.15/227.85 advanced. He faced Shirley Muldowney in the final, and she had problems and shut down to 9.61 while Dennis got the victory with a 6.25/202.24. At the end of March, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven Opener. His 6.25/231.95 qualified #12. He faced Gary Beck in the opening round, and Beck had run 6.07 in qualifying, so it looked bad for Baca. But Beck's car sounded rough, and sure enough, it spit and popped to a 27 second time while Dennis advanced with a 6.46/220.58. However, his fun was short-lived as in round two, eventual winner Frank Bradley's 6.23/214 sent Baca's 6.37/231.36 packing for home.

Notes: Had one of the few two-speed transmissions of this era. | Lee qualified on the "bump" at an eight-car show at Lions on February 9 with a 7.31. A first-round 7.34/213.27 lost to Mike Snively's 7.18/220 in the "Beaver Brothers" car. Joe was back at Lions for an eight-car show on April 12, but he qualified to qualify. He did run 220.04 in his non-qualifying pass. A sixteen-car show was run at OCIR on May 17. Joe beat Rick Ramsey in the first round, with a 7.01/196.06. He singled in the second round, but in the semifinal, his off pace 7.65/202 lost to Gary Cochran's 7.24/225. At the PDA Championships at OCIR in July, Joe qualified #22 in the 32 car field with a 7.09. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. A big win came on August 2 at Irwindale's second annual Gold Cup Championships. A first-round 7.14 beat James Warren's quicker 7.14. In the semifinals, a 6.97/212.76 beat Bobby Hightower and in the final, he soloed when Tom Ferraro lost oil pressure and shut off on the line. Abbott and Lee qualified #3 with a 7.00 in an eight-car show at Irwindale on August 23. A first-round 6.89/213.76 beat Frank Pedregon, but a second round 6.98 lost to Warren's 6.79. On August 30, Joe ran at Lions for the Drag News Nationals. In the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.67/211.76 beating Wayne King, but the run hurt the motor and he saw unable to run the second round. Joe won a Top Fuel show at Carlsbad the next day (August 31). On September 6, Lee was at Lions for another eight-car show. A first-round 6.78/218.44 beat the Caspary-Hampshire car, but a semifinal 6.80/216.86 lost to John Collins' 6.74/228 in Dave McKenzie's car. September 13 saw the Abbott and Lee car at an eight-car show at Irwindale where Joe ran a 7.15 to qualify #6. He hurt the engine on the run and was unable to continue. He was replaced in the field by alternate Pete Roger's "Bad Trip" car. Joe ran at Irwindale's big 32 car show for their Grand Prix race on October 4. Unfortunately, on his burnout for his first-round race against Ramsey, the rear end let go. He won an eight-car show at Lions on October 11. A first-round 6.86/214.28 beat Jim Dunn while a semifinal 6.70 (Low ET) at 214.79 beat a tire smoking Warren. In the final he met Ron Hampshire. The Caspary-Hampshire car had engine trouble and slowed to 9.71/93 while Lee ran 7.17/145.16 for the win. He qualified #1 with a 6.79 (Low ET) at an eight-car show at OCIR on October 25. He ran another 6.79 in the first round, to beat Don Prudhomme, but he smoked the tires in the semifinal and lost to Billy Tidwell's 7.02/216.

Notes: Conrad's new dragster ran its first laps at the OCIR Super Bowl race. He ran 5.85/227. Kalitta qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternationals and lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to Jeb Allen. He also qualified #1 at Pomona with a 5.852/244.56 for the NHRA Winternationals. He eased it through the first-round with a 6.28/172.08 when Rob Bruins fouled. A 6.01/238.72 beat Gary Beck's 6.02 at the same speed in round two. In the semifinals, a 5.98/238.09 beat Richard Tharp's 6.11/243 in the Candies and Hughes car. In the final, he faced former girlfriend Shirley Muldowney. Shirley had been running quicker all though eliminations and that's the way the final ended. Her 5.94/247 grabbed the win while Conrad's 6.03/233.76 got the runner-up spot. He won the Bakersfield March Meet on March 9. He set Low ET at 5.81, and in the semifinals got a measure of satisfaction when he beat Shirley's 5.83/226.70 with a 5.98/243. In the final, he faced Graham Light. Graham smoked the tires to a 9.86/82 while Kalitta chalked up the win with a 6.10/224.43. The following week (March 16), he qualified #10 at the NHRA Gatornationals. He lost to Allen in the first round. He made another final round appearance at the next race, the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 6.03 and then worked his way into the finals where he met Tharp. Connie smoked the tires in that final round racs and shut off to a 7.25/132.45, losing to Richard's 6.05/243. He qualified #2 behind Tharp with a 6.18 at the NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley. He made it into the finals by making a single in the semifinal when David Pace broke in the "Carroll Brothers" car. Kalitta ran a 6.37/230.17 on the solo, but he parachute failed and he crashed into the safety net. The car was too badly damaged to run in the final and Gary Beck singled for the win. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, he ran 5.97 to qualify #4 in the eight-car field. In the first round, he slowed to a 6.14 that lost to eventual winner Bob Hilton's 6.08 in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals in early June. He qualified in the "unlucky" #9 spot with a 6.01/235.72. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Tharp. Kalitta was up to the task, running a 5.97 to beat Richard's 6.03. He got to run Muldowney in round two and he was a bit slow of the line and his 6.00 lost to Shirley's 6.02. He qualified #7 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 5.97. He had an interesting run in round two; he went into tire shake against Shirley and it looked like she would get the win, but then the Pink car slowed at 3/4 track, breaking something in the drivetrain and Conrad motored past for the win with a 6.31. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Dick LaHaie. The following week (July 20), he was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.87 qualified #2 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, a 6.12 in the first round lost to Mark Oswald's 5.93. Connie didn't run a lot of AHRA races, but he was at Dragway 42 on July 27 for the AHRA Grandnationals. He didn't hang around for long; he qualified #6 in the eight-car show with a 6.07 and then left, not bothering to stay for eliminations. Back at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals in early August, a 6.08 qualified #5 in the eight-car program. He broke in the first round, and slowed to a 10.17 that lost to Tharp's Low ET run of 5.86. At the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove, Kalitta made it into the final before he smoked the tires to a 6.20/190.27 runner-up finish to Hilton's 5.88/236. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he qualified #12 with a 5.89/237.46. He beat Oswald's 6.15/234 in the first round, with a 6.02/205.94. Hiss 6.07/231.36 beat Tharp, who smoked the tire in round twos. In round three (32 car field), his car broke on the line and advanced Junior Kaiser into the semifinals. Bakersfield and Pomona were his best times at 5.81/244.56.

Notes: Duplicated his 240.64 best speed at the NHRA World Finals. | Jerry "The King" Ruth lived up nationwide to his nickname into the 80s, when he designed the "Swindhahl F-86," followed by Terry Capp/Bernie. In an online interview, Ruth explains the still-influential chassis designed for launching faster from static to dynamic weight. R/U to Bruins/Markley at the car's 5/80 WWCS SIR debut. Ruth and Lee Beard also won the Mile-Highs that year. Went to the 2nd round of the Fallnationals when the blower exploded against Allen. YouTube. I was at the '80 Falls, seeing Ruth go rounds, and AA/Dale's Billy-Meyer-Motor-assisted Final against the Blue Max. Belching sheets of fire, sounded very different. I got a picture card that day, and close up on the body, smaller lettering said, "The Amazing" Speed Racer. - Joe Moore

At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #15, and in round one, his 5.22 beat Lori Johns' identical 5.22. In round two, Whiting beat Dick LaHaie in a twin tire smoker with a 5.25/276. In the semifinals, his 5.26 lost to eventual winner Darrell Gwynn's 5.22. Earl's best times were 5.113 at Englishtown and 284.00 in eliminations at the World Finals. AKA The Likable Logger. Notes: NHRA Champ 1978. Ran 5.93/240 in eliminations at Indy 1978. Qualified number two at Pomona 78 at 5.871/238.72. Kelly Brown was in the right place at the right time in '78. He was driving Jim Brissette's Donovan-powered car, and the Donovan engine was making a comeback. At the NHRA Winternationals, the top three qualifiers were running Donovans, and Kelly's one-shot qualifier of 5.87/238.72 put him in the #2 spot behind Don Garlits' 5.77. Brown's opening round effort of 5.94/235 beat Jeb Allen's 6.06/236 and a 6.06/239 in round two-beat Shirley Muldowney's 6.13/236. He picked up to 5.88/237 in the semifinals to turn back Rick Ramsey's 6.25/219. His final round opposition was unheralded Gordon Fabeck. Kelly scored the victory with a 6.12/226 over Fabeck's 6.48/217. At Bakersfield's last 32 car Top Fuel field, Kelly's 6.10 qualified #15. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. The team's next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, he and Garlits took the top two spots in qualifying. This time Brown's 6.00 (Low ET) at 235.60 led the field. These two would work their way into the final. In the first round, Kelly ran another 6.00/240 to take out Dick LaHaie's 6.30/221. Yet another 6.00/224 in round two beat Richard Tharp's tire-smoking 7.41 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He slowed (?) to a 6.06/238 in a thumping of Marvin Graham's 6.32/236 in the semifinals, and he looked like a sure bet to get his second NHRA win in a row. Garlits had only run a best of 6.16 in eliminations. However, bad luck set in as Brown lost a motor just off the line, and he had to watch as Garlits smoked the tires to 6.55 for the victory. Brown didn't have to wait long before winning again. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals in April, he beat Mike Tarter in the final with a 6.11/235.68 over Mike's 6.28/234. Earlier, he almost matched Tharp's 6.04 Low ET of the meet with a 6.05 run in the semifinals over Johnny Abbott. On May 7, he won the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Seattle. A 6.00/244.56 qualified #2 in the eight-car field. He beat Rob Bruins in round one, with a 6.03/232.55 to Rob's 6.06/236. In the semifinals, his 5.93/236.84 (Low ET) beat Fabeck's 6.03/240, and in the final, his holeshot 6.26/211.76 beat Graham Light's quicker 6.15/238. The following week, he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race. He was late in arriving after towing from his win in Seattle. The team was lacking parts for their Donovan, and they were forced to make things do. After they showed up, Kelly cracked off a 5.97/236.22 to qualify low for the sixteen-car field. In the first round, the car lost fire on the line, and after he got it restarted, he had to run without the benefit of a burnout. He beat Stan Shiroma's 6.39/216 in with a 6.21/200.00. In round two, the same thing happened; he lost fire, restarted it, and ran without the burnout. This time his 6.39/179.64 lost to Rick Ramsey's 6.01/230. His winning ways continued at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. But his transporter let him down on the way to National Trail, and he got there just before tech closed. After two failed attempts to qualify, a last-ditch effort of 5.96/236.84 qualified him #5 in the show. After that, it was smooth sailing. A 6.10/233.76 beat Muldowney's 6.15/238 and a 6.12/233.16 in round two beat Light's 6.34/206. A consistent 6.11/234.37 in the semifinals turned back Tharp's 6.14/241 and put him into the final against Frank Bradley. The two had a great race, but Brown showed that he could cut a light as his 6.09/238.72 beat Frank's 6.05/238 for his third NHRA National event win of '78. Things did not go so well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He only qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.15, and he lost to Paul Longenecker in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he scored yet another win. It was an eight-car show, and seventeen cars attempted to qualify. Brown was on the "bump" with his 6.01. But during eliminations, he picked up. A first-round 5.91/233.16 beat Garlits' 6.16/222, and a semifinal 5.97/230.17 stopped Light's 6.19/225. He faced Abbott in the final, and an off-pace 6.31/220.58 was enough to win Abbott's equally troubled 6.40/213. Before the NHRA US Nationals, Kelly went to the Car Craft Magazine Awards show, awarded "Person of the Year." Did Kelly run 5.809 somewhere this year? We formerly listed that, but he did not run it in NHRA competition.

Notes: David qualified #14 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.940/230.17. He beat Mike Tarter in the first round, with a 6.085/229.59, but in round two, his 6.273/216.86 lost to Dave Settles' 5.89/225. He failed to qualify (first alternate) for the eight-car field at the NHRA Western Regional at Green Valley, but he got in when Keith Craig was unable to run. Pace faced Gary Beck in the first round, but his tire-smoking 6.64/224.43 lost to Beck's 6.21/219. In May, at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, David set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.800/247.93. In the first round, he slowed to 6.16/233.16 and lost to Jody Smart's 5.91/243. David qualified #8 at the Springnationals with a 5.936/243.24 and beat Jim Barnard in round one, 6.134/236.84 to 6.19/231. He set Top Speed of the Meet at 5.921/247.93 over Shirley Muldowney's close, holeshot-aided 5.964/244.56 (.001 seconds margin of victory - about four INCHES at the stripe)! In round three, David slowed to a 6.331/212.76, and Butch Osmon advanced at 6.12/209. David qualified #4 at Denver with a 6.000/237.46. He beat Rob Bruins in round one, 6.012/238.09 to 6.11/239.99, and drove around a Doug Kernulas holeshot in round two, 5.994/238.09 to a close 6.050/241.93 (.007 seconds - a little over two feet). He slipped to a 7.43 in the final, and Jeb Allen got the win at 5.94/243. David qualified #6 at Indy with his best ET of the year, 5.731/246.57. In round one, he beat a fouling Frank Bradley, coasting to a 9.51. In round two, he blasted a 5.887/250.00 to beat Dwight Salisbury at 6.20/176. David's 250.00 run at Indy on September 7, 1981, was the 11th entry in the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. He beat Connie Kalitta in the semis, 6.59/145, when Connie could not fire. In the final, he fouled and coasted to a 7.67, while winner Johnny Abbott also coasted through to a 10-second win. David qualified #5 at the World Final at Orange County with a nice 5.747/246.57. However, Shirley Muldowney surprised him with a holeshot and a better ET in round one, taking a 5.88/243 to 5.901/236.22 victory. AKA The Texas Whips. Photo from Gainesville 1981.
