Notes: Mike was the #4 qualifier at Indy at 6.221/222.77. He took a 6.450/226.13 first-round win over Stan Bowman, but fouled against Dan Richins in round two. At Ontario, Mike qualified #2 at 6.108/227.84 after Ed Renck's 6.08. In a mirror of the Indy round two, he beat a fouling Dan Richins in round one, with an 8.15 shut off. In round two, he ran 6.14/227.84 when Clayton Harris shut off on the line. Round three saw Mike become the first NHRA 5, and second member of the Cragar Five Second Club (after Tommy Ivo's match race time). Snively snoozed with a 5.974/235.69 to become the first NHRA racer in the fives, but Vic Brown left on him and won with a slower 6.034/231.95. Mike also ran 6.15 at Lions Last Drag Race.

Notes: Tommy Ivo's first rear-engined car. By the end of the year, Tommy was the first Top Fuel in the fives at New Alexandria, PA, and the first member of the Cragar 5-Second Top Fuel Club. The record-setting car used a Woody Gilmore 225" chassis. The bodywork was by Tom Hanna. The 1,700 hp engine was a 426 Hemi with a Reath stroker crank that upped the cubes to 473. Keith Black rods and Jahns pistons. Keith Black also did the machining and the head work. Ivo, however, picked Isky for the cam rather than Black's preference for Engle. A Larry Bowers prepared GMC 6/71 sat on a Cragar manifold, and Cragar also supplied the blower drive. An Enderle injection unit sat up top. The engine burned between 76 to 95% nitro. The power was transmitted through a Lenco two-speed overdrive transmission. Ivo varied the rear-end gear ratios from 4.88, 5.13, and 5.38. Bill Carter did the paint. Tom qualified #32 at the Pomona Winters at 6.906/222.22. He upset Jim Paoli in round one, 6.84/223.32 to 6.86/217.39. Tom lost on a holeshot to Ken McLean in round two, 6.91/182.92 to Tom's 6.86/196.93. Tom won IHRA Dallas in June. He qualified #2 (times unknown). He ran 6.56/216.86 to defeat Jack Mitchell's 6.64/201.34 in round one. In the second round, Tommy singled when Skipper Harder broke on the burnout. In the semis, he won a squeaker over Larry LaDue in the Jackie Peebles machine, 6.53/231.36 to 6.54/227.85. In the final, Tommy won another close one over Carl Olson, 6.25/237.46 to 6.26/233.16. At Indy, Tom qualified #14 at 6.421/222.22. He best Sid Seeley in round one, 6.355/221.67 to a ten-second shutoff, but fouled away a 6.824/228.42 to Chuck Kurzawa's winning 7.355/126.93 in round two. Indy was Tommy's last NHRA national event of the year. At Keystone, Tommy ran 6.03/225, 6.25/227 (smoking the tires), and 5.97/230 to win the match over Bob Starr and run the sport's first 'five.' Starr ran 6.82/212 in the first and third rounds. We need the official third digit on the 5.97 if anyone has it. In the photo, John Tarzan Austin, with the hat, is standing behind the wing, and Ivo is packing the chute.

Notes: Garlits started the '85 season at Firebird Dragway in January for its Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He was there for a best-of-three-match race against Gary Beck. Don won all three races to win the match. His 5.61/251.39 in the second race looked pretty strong, but it was nothing compared to his final race, where he reset both ends of the track record with a 5.45 (career-best to this point) at 259.36. Then things went bad. A wing strut broke, and the dragster ended up sliding down the track on its side before finally rolling a couple of times in the mud field that adjoined that racetrack. The car was a mess, but Don only suffered a bruised elbow. He was back behind the wheel a week later at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 5.87/256.41 qualified #12. He met Beck in the opening round of eliminations, and Don's 5.53/258 beat Beck's 5.68/235. A 5.50/262.39 covered Dick LaHaie's 5.73/240 in round two, but in the semifinal, both he and his opponent, Joe Amato, blew their engines. Joe coasted across the finish line first. Three cars qualified in the 5.5's at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, and Garlits' 5.55/259.36 (Top Speed) got the #3 spot in the field. in the opening round, he ran 5.61/255.82 to beat Jack Ostrander, but in round two, he was upset by Bill Mullins. They had a great race that saw Don's 5.68/254.09 lose to Mullins' 5.67/250. Garlits won his 24th NHRA national event at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals in April. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.54/259.96. In the first round, he cracked 260 with a 5.62/261.93 that beat LaHaie's 5.75/249. He ran the fastest speed for a Top Fuel dragster (up until this time). Don's 5.62/265.48 buried Larry Minor's off-pace 6.32/156. He faced Amato in the final, and there was just no stopping Garlits on this day as his 5.51/258 easily beat Joe's 5.68/222. | Don ran 5.436/260.71 to qualify #1 at the Budweiser Summernationals & would win the race. | Also ran 259.36 at the 1985 Northstars. Don was a 5.56/266.27 winner at ADRA Kansas City.

Notes: The Speed Sport modified roadster campaigned by Lyle Fisher, Gary "Red" Greth, and Don Maynard, one of the more popular cars of its era, produced record-setting performances from 1956 through the early 1960s. Powered by a rear-mounted 354" Chrysler Hemi, the 1,500-pound roadster stunned observers with a speed record of 160.14 mph at the 1957 ATAA World Series at Cordova, Ill., and finished the year with a clocking of 169.11 in Tucson, Ariz. Records set in 1960 include an 8.03/175.78 at Davis-Monthan in Tuscon (probably bogus), a 180.72 backed up by a 179.28 on October 2, and the Drag News 1320 Standard Modified Fuel Roadster speed mark of 183.67 mph set eight days later in Alton, Ill. The Speed Sport roadster remained competitive well into the mid-1960s, qualifying for Top Fuel at the 1963 AHRA Winternationals and making its final appearance at the 1964 Bakersfield March Meet. Info courtesy NHRA Museum. Photo of restoration taken in 2003. - TD | After the 8.03 on March 27, he returned and went 8.53 a week later.

Notes: Gene debuted this new 300-inch Gene Gaddy machine at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. The car notably had a direct drive by NHRA Sonoma; did it have that from the beginning? Gene gets a lot of credit for driving that innovation in Top Fuel with this machine. He qualified #5 at Baton Rouge at 5.250/254.59 and defeated Rudy Toepke's off pace 6.67/132 with a 5.358/239.48 in round one. In round two, he lost to Darrell Gwynn, 5.19/274 to 5.298/257.95. Gene qualified #4 at Columbus at 5.238/273.80. In round one, he ran 5.216/268.49 to bury Jack Ostrander's 10-second pass. In the second round, Gene ran 5.269/254.23 to take out Dan Pastorini's 14-second shutoff. With a 5.210/256.55 defeat of Eddie Hill's 15-second shutoff, he reached the finals. That was the Low ET of the meet, but Gene then ran into the same problems as all his earlier competitors and shut off to a 14-second pass in the final, losing to Gwynn's 5.22/275. In Sanair, Gene qualified #3 at 5.217/279.06. In round one, he beat Ray Stutz with a career-best 5.162/252.26 to Ray's 5.43/261. IN round two, Gene stayed consistent with a 5.178/262.39 to 5.167/274.22 holeshot win over Eddie Hill. That put him into the final of the eight-car show against Dick LaHaie. Gene won a close race, 5.198/273.47 to 5.238/268.41. At Englishtown, Gene qualified #7 at 5.313/256.77. In round one, he beat Paul Smith, 5.374/250.97 to 5.48/249. He improved in round two to take out Gwynn, 5.297/258.32 to 5.34/263. Eddie Hill ended his day in the semis, 5.30/259, to an 18-second shutoff. Gene got even quicker at NHRA Sonoma, where he definitely had the direct-drive combo in the car. A 5.139/268.57 grabbed the number one qualifying slot. He set the Low ET of the Meet in round one with a 5.117/275.90 win over Gwynn's fouling 5.42/217. Gene beat Shirley Muldowney in round two, 5.193/270.59 to 5.34/272. He shut off to a 12-second pass in round three that sent eventual winner Joe Amato's 7.19/271 into the final. Gene continued to impress in Seattle, where his 5.067/277.34 qualified #2. In round one, he ran 5.115/240.96 to beat Stutz's 5.42/255. Gene took out Muldowney in round two, 5.109/273.30 to 5.19/276, and then took a 20-second coasting win when Frank Bradley broke. Darrell Gwynn got to him in the final, 5.25/266 to a 9.66 shutoff. Gene was the low qualifier in Brainerd with a 5.147/269.46 Low ET of the Meet effort. In round one, he beat Earl Whiting, 5.325/257.73 to 5.45/260. Gwynn beat him in round two, 5.25/266 to 5.332/217.02. Gene qualified #4 at Indy at 5.125/252.10 and took a 5.124/268.97 win over Whiting's shutoff in round one. In round two, Gene went 5.076/275.31 to take out Dennise Forcelle's shutoff run. He then really lowered the boom in the semis with a 5.006/276.66 Low ET of the Meet win over Darrell Gwynn's 5.21/275. But consistency bit him in the finals again, and Joe Amato got a 6.81-second win when Gene went 10.36. Gene delivered the promise that everyone seemed to expect after Indy when he ran the first NHRA four-second run at 4.997/279.06 at NHRA Houston on 10/06/88. That was the low qualifier for the event and was the second entry into the Crane Cams 4 Second Club for Top Fuel. Snow beat Gary Ormsby in round one, 5.083/272.64 to 5.15/266. In round two, he defeated Frank Hawley, 5.109/269.78 to 5.20/271. Eddie Hill, the first man in the fours, found them again in round three, and his 4.990/282.39 took out Gene's off pace 9.24. At Phoenix Fall, Gene qualified #9 at 5.238/262.00. Of course, that put him against low qualifier Eddie Hill, and he lost a 5.73/265 to 11.44 contest in round one. Gene was back to form at IHRA Ennis, where he was back in the fours again with a 4.974. At the NHRA World Finals, his 5.055/262.23 was the second qualifier after Joe Amato's Low ET effort of 5.016. Unfortunately, Gene fell off the pace in round one and lost to Frank Bradley, 5.83/255 to 7.178/122.53. It was a memorable year for Gene, who proved the direct-drive concept. Soon all other competitors featured the combo. Photo from Columbus 1988.

Notes: Prudhomme started the '92 season at Firebird Raceway's test & tune event in January. On Friday, he and crew chief John Medlen brought their new Swindahl car and started the weekend with an out-of-shape, half-track pass. The run would have been a good one before Don clicked it was he stopped the 330-foot timers with a .22. They made more runs on Saturday. A half-track 5.50/182.29 was followed by two tire smokers. Then Prudhomme laid down a 4.99 at a track record speed of 291.07. Pomona did not go very well for the team as a best of 5.12/277.17 left them (third alternate) outside of the starting field for the NHRA Winternationals. Prudhomme did much better back at Firebird for the NHRA Arizona Nationals in February A 5.15/287.81 qualified #14, and in the opening round, he improved to 4.94/289.01 to beat Mike Dunn's 5.10/265. But in round two, the "Snake" overpowered the track and smoked the tires in a loss to Mike Brotherton. The next NHRA race was the Slick 50 Nationals at Houston. Don's 4.95/291.26 qualified #9, and in round one, he ran an even better 4.93/289.76, but it wasn't enough to beat Kenny Bernstein's 4.85/293.

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Also 305.18 national record at 94 Gators. Defeated dad Connie in the quickest side by side race ever, 4.748 to 4.789 at 94 Houston. Ran 302.52 at 94 Brainerd. | Dick LaHaie and the team dialed in the new Mert Littlefield supercharger this year and took off. Dick designed a new chassis design and had Murf McKinney build it. That allowed the power to be put to the ground. Murf did not sell the design to other teams for one year. - Dick LaHaie, Racin & Rockin Radio, 2/24/14 | Scott Kalitta was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #4 with a 4.80/303.03. But in the opening round of eliminations, both he and Jim Head ran 4.89 (Scott at 298.50) and Jim got the win light. The next stop was at Arizona for the NHRA Quality Care Nationals. A 4.85/300.70 qualified #9. He improved to a 4.76/298.80 in the first round, to beat Don Prudhomme's 4.89/262. But he lost a close race in round two where his 4.83/298.70 fell to eventual winner Cory McClenathan's 4.82/297. It was then off to Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. The team had its act together there as he qualified the car #3 with a 4.77/296.34. Scott then reset the NHRA record with a 4.72 at 298.21 in the first round, to beat Ed McCulloch's 5.05/292. He seemed to lose in two when he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.03/80, but opponent Shelly Anderson crossed the centerline and was disqualified. He faced his dad, Connie, in the semifinals and youth won over experience as dad's 4.78/291 lost to Scott's 4.78/293.63. This put Scott into the final against another experienced driver, none other than Prudhomme. Scott fell off to a 4.92/274.55 in the final while the "Snake" legged it to a 4.88/294 for his 47th NHRA victory. Next on the NHRA tour was the Gatornationals. There, Scott’s 4.82/303.03 qualified #5. He beat Tommy Johnson Jr's 4.93/291 in the first round, with a 4.85/295.56. A 4.86/299.30 beat Pat Austin in round two and he set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 4.79/305.18 that took out Kenny Bernstein's fireballing 5.21/225. Once again, he met up with his dad, but this time the money was on the line. This time Connie stepped up with a 4.79 of his own to beat Scott's 4.95/271.65 runner-up effort. Early in April, NHRA was at Rockingham for its Invitational race. Fourteen cars showed to battle for one of the eight spots available for the show. Scott set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 4.82/297.81. But in the first round, he smoked the tires against Rachelle Splatt and shut off to a 6.15/154.26 loss.

Notes: The eighth member of the Cragar Four-Second Club for Top Fuel with this national record run on September 15, 1989. Shirley took part in the quickest side-by-side run in history with Joe Amato at 89 Keystones, 4.967 (Joe) to 4.975 (Shirley). Photo (far lane) from 1989 US Nationals IRP vs. Lori Johns (near Lane). What can you say about Shirley Muldowney? She was amazing. Despite her accidents in the sport, she always returned. Shirley loved drag racing. She ran well in '89, finishing in ninth in the season-long NHRA points chase. She only got one win, but she was consistent throughout the year. | The season started at Pomona for the Winternationals, where she ran a 5.15/274.22 to qualify #10. An improved 5.13/275.73 was not enough in round one, and she lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.07/277. At Houston for the Supernationals, a best-ever (to this point) 5.07 qualified #8. In the first round, she ran alternate, Lori Johns. Shirley smoked the tires, and Johns went on to a 5.16 win. The Gatornationals was the next event on the schedule, and Shirley qualified #12 with a 5.20, setting up a first-round race with former boyfriend and crew chief Connie Kalitta. Announcers were always quick to point that out. In their race, Kalitta broke, and Shirley moved on with a 5.49. She lost to Eddie Hill in the second round. At Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, she just made the show with her 5.29/266.74 qualifying on the bump. A first-round 5.28/261.39 was no match for Joe Amato's 5.15/270. She was a no-show at the next few events before she showed up in Canada for the Grandnationals. Unfortunately, a best of 5.45/250.69 was good for the first alternate. Shirley did make the show at Englishtown for the Summernationals. A 5.25/276.75 qualified on the bump. She lost to Frank Cook in round one. At the Mile High Nationals, she again lost in the first round, this time to Amato. She qualified #10 with a 5.41/263.38 in the thin Denver air. At the eleventh race of the season, the California Nationals, Shirley ran a 5.12/285.17 to qualify in the top half of the field (#7). But for the third straight race, she was gone after the first-round. Gordie Bonin's 5.15 sent her packing this time. At Seattle for the Seafair Nationals, she qualified #7 with a 5.12/287.72. A first-round 5.16/283.10 beat Gary Beck in the McGee car. But in the second round, Ormsby's 5.11/280 beat her game 5.14/282.22. She ran really well at the Northstar Nationals, qualifying #4 with a 5.18/276.60. Cook fouled against her in the first round, but she legged it through with a 5.19/280.02 anyway. Both she and Hill smoked the tires in the second round, and her 5.62/268.41 beat Eddie's 5.80/262.92. In the semifinals, Shirley and opponent Kalitta ran 5.16's at 277, but the lady got the win light. In the final, she lost to Amato. Shirley tried hard to qualify at Indy for the US Nationals, but it wasn't to be. Her best of 5.17/281.95 was the fourth alternate. She sure made up for her non-qualifier at the next event, the Keystone Nationals, where she used a 4.97/284.99 to take the pole. In the first round, she beat Gene Snow with a 5.00/286.16. Then Shirley and Amato had the quickest ever side by side race, with Joe's 4.96/290 nipping her 4.97/287.81. At the Chief Nationals at the Texas Motorplex, Muldowney qualified #5 with a 4.98/289.66. She ran a shut-off 11.11 in the first round, when Rudy Toepke broke. In round two, she lost to Ormsby. Shirley got her lone win of the season at the next event, the Fallnationals at Firebird Raceway. She qualified #1 with a 5.03/282.04 (Top Speed). In the second round, a 5.15/279 beat Snow's 5.16, and in the semifinals, a holeshot 5.16/269 beat Amato's quicker 5.14. In the final, she met Darrell Gwynn, and once again, she outdrove the boys with her 5.05/275.48 getting the win over Darrell's slightly quicker 5.04/278. | Shirley and Tobler were also Top Speed at Seattle in '89 at 287.72. - Joe Moore

Notes: Low ET and Top Speed at the season-opening Winternationals at 5.937/244.56. Runner up to Garlits at IHRA Bristol in June 1975, 6.10/238.72 to 6.18/225.56. Won IHRA Dragway 42 over Garlits, 6.00 to 6.03, both at 245.23, in August 1975. | After a great '74 season, Gary was hoping for more in '75. The season started at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field and lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.42/229.00 lost to James Warren's 6.35/206. Gary then went to Pomona, where his 5.97/239.36 qualified #2. He set both Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.93/244.46 over Don Souter in the first round. Unfortunately, in round two, he smoked the tires to a 6.49/212.26 loss to Rick Ramsey's 6.18/211. He passed up racing at the Bakersfield March Meet. His next stop was at Miami Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and Beck 6.00 (Low ET) was two-tenths quicker than the second qualifier. But in the opening round of eliminations, he lost an engine and slowed to 6.41 in a loss to Austin Myers' 6.22. It was then off to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Gary's 6.19 qualified #7, and in round one, he had more bad luck as he tossed a blower belt against Hank Endres. After a few weeks off, Beck went to Amarillo, Texas, for the IHRA World Nationals. Things didn't go so well, as he failed to qualify for the eight-car show. He also didn't do too well when he faced off against Jerry Ruth for a best-of-three-match race at Mission BC. Gary lost all three of his races. Things went much more Beck's style at the second NHRA Division One race held at Cayuga. He won the event by beating Charlie Greer's 6.67/218 with a 6.36/205.94. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 6.25/231.95 that sent Grant Stoms' 6.46/227 packing for home. He had his closest race in the final, where his 6.47/204.08 beat Larry Bucher's 6.48/200. Early in June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.11/227.84 qualified #6. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.22/222.77 beat Frank Bradley's 6.21/222. But in round two, Beck broke on the line, letting eventual winner Marvin Graham solo into the semifinal with a 6.23. Set the national record at Ontario, only to have Garlits better it and pass Gary for the world championship. Ran 5.74 for the low qualifier at the 1975 World Finals.

Notes: First in the 5.50s, but not backed up for the record. Low qualifier at Indy with a 5.632. Beck started the '81 season at the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #7 with a 5.92. In the first round, he ran an off pace 6.43 and lost to Marvin Graham's 6.08. He then ran at Famoso on March 8 for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.14/225.56 qualified #13 in the sixteen-car field, and he suffered another first-round loss when he ran a 6.40/211.26 to lose against Jerry Ruth (6.00/225). The following week at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, a best of 6.08 failed to qualify for the all five-second show. In April, things got better for the team when a 6.12/203.61 qualified #2 for the NHRA Western Regional Opener at Green Valley. A first-round 6.21/219.51 beat alternate David Pace (6.64/224), and in the semifinal, a 6.27/224.43 beat a tire-smoking Graham. In the final, he met Low ET setter (6.00), Gene Snow, and a 6.29/206.42 took the win when Snow's car broke. On April 26, he again failed to qualify when his 5.93 was the first alternate at the eight-car field for the NHRA Southern Nationals. In May, he rebounded with a runner-up finish to Gary Cornwall at OCIR for the NHRA Western Regional. He qualified #4 with a 6.09/231.95 and beat John Kimble in the first round, with a 6.30/234.37. A 6.20/240.00 beat Rob Bruins in the semifinal, but a final round at 6.40/225.00 lost to Cornwall's 6.24/236. He finally got back into the fives again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals on May 24 when a 5.88 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he fouled against Richard Tharp in the first round. Another runner-up performance came at Bandimere Speedway on May 30 for another NHRA Western Regional meet. He ran 5.95/223.88 over Jim Archer (6.35/217) in the first round, and then set Low ET with a 5.93/229.59 victory over Bruin's 6.33/215 in the semifinal. In the final, another good run of 5.97/227.84 was good for runner-up as Johnny Abbott's 5.95/230 beat him to the finish. A big win followed on June 21 at the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.89/234.37 and beat Bruins, Jim Head, and Terry Capp to meet Butch Osmon in the Jim and Allison Lee car in the final. Beck won easily with a 6.05/224.99 when Butch had problems and slowed to 7.56/113. Things didn't stay so rosy as at the next NHRA event, the Mile High Nationals, on July 4. A best of 6.12/208.81 in the thin air was a non-qualifier (#1 alternate). Again things changed for the better as he went out and won the NHRA Summernationals, setting Low ET at 5.74 in his semifinal victory over Jeb Allen and beating Mark Oswald in the final, 6.02/221.13 to Mark's 6.16/236.84. At the third NHRA Eastern Regional event at Indianapolis, he qualified #4 at 6.04. A first-round 5.98/219.51 beat George Tolon's 6.08/228. Doug Kerhulas stepped up with a 5.88/236 to put Beck's 5.96/223.32 on the trailer in the semi. Then he won at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.79, advanced past a fouling Jody Smart in the first round, and beat Tharp in the semis with a 5.83/236.84. In the final, a 6.01/231.95 beat Jeb Allen's 6.30/241. On July 26, he showed up in Atlanta for an NHRA Eastern Regional race and won that too. He qualified #3 with a 6.07/210.77 and ran a first-round 5.82/237.46 over Jenks Bailey, and a semifinal 5.97/216.86 took care of Smart (6.09/230). He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 5.80/243.24 defeat of Jim Head's 6.04/234. Gary's streak of wins ended on August 9 in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.74/246.57 and beat Doug Kerhulas with a 5.89/241.28 in the first round. Unfortunately, a broken fuel line in the semifinal gave Graham a single into the finals. He qualified #1 again at Indy with a track record 5.63 at 244.56 but again failed to reach the finals. Oswald stopped Beck in the first round, at the IHRA US Open on September 13. Gary ran an off pace 6.37 to lose to Mark's 5.82/212. In October, he qualified #2 at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals but was upset by Connie Kalitta in the first round. Then came the NHRA World Finals. He qualified #3 with a 5.72/226.13 and a first-round 5.73/233.76 beat Dick LaHaie (5.83/233). Round two saw Beck's 5.72/239.36 beat Lucille Lee (5.95/234), and in the semi's, a 5.77/236.84 beat Shirley Muldowney (5.97/211). In the final, Beck dropped a bombshell, his 5.57/245.23 defeated Dwight Salisbury and broke the track et record of 5.77 held by Muldowney since May of '77.

Notes: Wayne was at Santa Maria for a Top Fuel race on July 12. He set Top Speed of the meet in qualifying with a 187.10 run. It was an eight-car show and in round one, he beat Rick Stewart with an 8.14/186.16. He soloed in the semifinals with a Low ET of the meet 7.70/186.92 pass. In the final, he met up with James Warren's little Chevy powered car. Wayne couldn't catch Warren and he had to settle for the runner-up spot. He won at Fremont on August 9. He ran a 7.86/191.08 solo when final round opponent Denny Miliani broke in the Masters & Richter car and was unable to run.
