Notes: Gary had a great year in '74. He started the season at Irwindale's Grand Premiere race on January 12. The eight Top Fuel cars in the show were all members of the Cragar Five-Second Club. There was no qualifying as starting positions were drawn from a hat. Beck faced off against Tommy Ivo in the first round, but he got out of shape, and his 7.58/128.20 lost to Ivo's 6.57/208. One week later (January 27), Gary was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3 with a 6.10/233.76. In the first round, he beat Dick LaHaie's 6.26/229 with a 6.15/231.95. In round two, another 6.15 at 230.76 beat Bruce Walker's 6.40/222. But in the semifinals, he tossed a blower belt on the line and watched as eventual winner Mike Wagoner singled into the final. Beck went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and strutted his stuff. A 6.02/240.00 qualified #4, and he improved to a first-round 5.96/239.36 while beating John Austin. His times kept getting quicker, as in round two, a 5.90/223.88 beat John Wiebe's 6.27/226. He uncorked Low ET of the meet in the semifinal with a 5.842/226.13 over Pat Dakin. In the final, he was up against Jerry Ruth, and Ruth's 6.21/226 lost to Beck's strong 5.91/243.24 (Top Speed). This showing really made an impression on the rest of the field, showing that Beck was tough to beat as the season wore on. In March, Beck qualified #3 at Bakersfield for the March Meet with a 6.11/198.66. He beat a crossed-up Gary Ormsby in the first round, and in round two, he got a single when Billy Tidwell failed to show. In the third round, he beat Larry Dixon's Chevy, but it was a costly win as he hurt the motor and could not come back and run Carl Olson in the semifinal. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Beck qualified #1 with a 6.01 (Low ET) at 235.60. A first-round 6.19/225.56 beat Paul Longenecker, and in round two, he lost an engine, but his 6.32/186.72 still beat Jim Hundley. With a new "bullet" installed, Gary got a break in the semifinal when Jim Murphy lost a transmission. Beck was ready for the final against Dave Settles in the "Candies and Hughes" car, but he got a little too excited and fouled, handing Settles the win. At the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown, Gary qualified on the pole, but he failed to make the finals of the eight-car show. He more than made up for it by winning the second NHRA Division 1 race at Cayuga Dragway Park in Ontario, Canada. He beat a tire-smoking Jim Bucher in the first round, and a 6.43/227.84 beat Tony Ceraolo in the semifinal. Beck then set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.38/231.95 that beat Sarge Arciero's 6.77/225 for the victory. Another win came at the fifth annual Northwest Open at Seattle. It was an eight-car show that had 21 cars trying to qualify. Gary qualified #2 with a 6.24/231.36. He picked up his pace to a first-round 5.95/236.84 (Top Speed) to beat Terry Capp's 6.43/231. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a track record 5.94/226.13 over Hank Johnson. In the final, he smoked to a 6.48/236.84 that beat Ernie Hall's troubled 7.37/221. It was another impressive win for Beck as he was the only car in the fives. Yet the wins kept coming. On June 9, he scored again at the NHRA Springnationals at National Trail. He qualified #2 with a 6.03/242.58. A first-round 6.09/230.17 beat Flip Schofield, and in round two, a 6.03/236.22 beat Grant Stoms. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 5.98/245.23 over Wiebe. In the final, he ran low qualifier Olson. Beck roared to a 6.05/247.25 (Top Speed) for the win over Carl's 6.26. He went over to AHRA for its Springnationals at Spokane Raceway. Once again, he took the win. He got to Wiebe again in the semifinals with his 6.15/226.70, beating John's 6.47/196. In the final, he met Don Garlits. When these two raced, it was always worth watching. This time was no different, but Beck whipped the "old man" with a 6.00 (Low ET) at 232.55 over Don's 6.36/230. Gary got knocked back down to earth at the AHRA Grand American at Kansas City on July 7. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.43/211.76, and in the first round, he lost to the #8 qualifier Chris Karamesines when his 6.79 fell to Chris' 6.51. The following week (July 14), he was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. The team was a little off here as Beck only qualified #13 with a 6.41/229.00. He picked up to 6.32/230.76 in the first round, over Arciero's close 6.35/238, but in round two, he fell off to 6.61/225.56 in a loss to Chuck Kurzawa's 6.39/227. At the third NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove, he qualified #4 in the eight-car field and lost to #8 qualifier Hank Endres' 6.37/217 in the first round, with a quicker 6.35/222.22. After a couple of bad weeks, people were quick to say that Beck had lost his combination, but all that went away when they went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Gary ran Sanair's first "five" when he qualified #1 with a 5.91 at 223.32. The second qualifier was Settles, way back at 6.27. In round one, Beck ran 6.20/219.51 to beat Stoms' 6.34/226. In the second round, he hurt his engine while running 5.94/242.58 while beating Jeb Allen's 6.35/218. Lady Luck stepped in, and it rained. This postponed the race until Monday, giving Beck and his crew time to install a new motor for the semifinals. In the semifinals, Jim Bucher smoked his tires against him, and Gary advanced with a 6.28. He faced Settles in the final, and Dave must have been a little nervous seeing Beck's times. Settles fouled away a 6.39 while Beck grabbed the victory with a 6.34/217.91. After such a strong showing, it was surprising that he failed to qualify at the PHR Championships. Although he was not alone as 39 cars had attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Almost as many (38) showed up at New York National for the PRO race on August 17. It was quite a bit easier to qualify as it was a 32 car field. Beck's 6.28/198.66 qualified #14. He improved to 6.07/217.80 in the first round, to beat Dale Thierer, but in the second round, he lost an engine, and his 6.58/169.49 fell to Jim Walther's 6.19/228. Began 1974 season with Beck & Peets on the car before acquiring cigarette manufacturer "Export A" as a sponsor. Won 1974 NHRA World Championship. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Ran 5.940/248.61 at Ontario in 10/74. Ran 5.842 at Winters, 6.01 at Gators, 5.98 at Springs, 6.31 at Summers, 6.21 at Indy, 5.94 at Supernationals, 5.91 at Sanair. Beck won Winternats, Springnats, Grandnats.

Notes: Jimmy's season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #13 with a 4.96/279.41, but in round one, his 4.99/275.65 lost to Joe Amato's 4.98/291. Things didn't go quite so well at the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona where a best run of 5.51/176.99 failed to qualify for the show. Nix rebounded nicely at the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals at Houston where he ran a career best (to this point) of 4.90 at 251.67 to qualify #10. Unfortunately, he fouled against Tony Pedregon in the first round and shut off to 5.39/182. Jimmy was left on the outside looking in at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.31/210 best failed to make the show. He was back in the show at NHRA's next race, the Southern Nationals, where he ran 5.01/257.65 to qualify #14. Once again, he lost in the first round, but Kenny Bernstein needed a slight holeshot to win this time. Kenny's 4.94/293 beat Nix's quicker 4.93/277.17. The pattern continued however, when at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, he was back to being a non-qualifier. A 5.08/271.41 was good for the first alternate. He did not go to Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals but he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals where his 4.98/274.72 qualified #6. An off-pace 5.49/184.72 in the first round lost to Joe Amato's 5.09/288. Low qualifier at NHRA Ennis 93. Also 4.807 at 93 World Finals. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats.

Notes: Larry ran some good times in 1986 but really surprised everyone with a 5.327/266.27 shot at the World Finals for the #1 qualifying position. Unfortunately, Larry shut off to a 12-second run in round one and lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.69/238. Larry won the Mile High Nationals in July. Ran NHRA D7 Bakersfield CA 1986, March Meet. World Finals entry indicated San Jacinto hometown.

Notes: Won 1981 AHRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, becoming the first and only woman to do so. Also won Bakersfield March Meet, becoming the first and only woman to do so. | Shirley started the '81 season at the AHRA Winternationals, where she qualified #5. In the first round, a 6.37/218 lost to Dick LaHaie's 6.35/218. She then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where 40 Top Fuel cars tried to get into the sixteen-car field. A 5.84 qualified #3 and a first-round 5.92/241 beat Frank Bradley (5.94/241). In the second round, a 600-foot wheelstand cost her the race against Marvin Graham. It was on to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet that, as mentioned above, she won. Shirley ran a 5.91/243.90 to qualify #3 again, and a first-round 5.96 beat her former partner Connie Kalitta in the first round. In round two, a 5.94/240.64 dispatched Mark Prudhomme's 6.19/213. In the semifinal, she met Jerry Ruth, and a 5.84 (Low ET) got her into the finals. A 5.92/245.90 (Top Speed) won the event over Doug Kerhulas. She backed that win up with another win a week later at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Shirley qualified #4 with a 5.76/247.93. A first-round 5.80/241.28 beat Mark Oswald and a second-round 5.74/250.00 beat Kalitta. In the semifinals, a 5.79/244.56 took out Dave Settles. In the final, she met strong competition in the form of Jody Smart. It was a good race, but Shirley's 5.81/247.25 prevailed over Smart's 5.89/245. On April 5, she ran at the NHRA Western Regional at Green Valley, where a 6.03/225.56 qualified #1. She met Smart again in the first round, and a 6.10/222.77 beat his tire-smoking 6.38/233. Unfortunately, it was her turn to smoke the hides in the semifinal against Gene Snow. On April 26, she was running in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.83 qualified her #4 in the eight-car field. A 5.89/238.72 beat Kerhulas' 5.91/240 in the first round, and a 5.97/236 beat Jeb Allen's 6.00/241 in the semis. Another win came her way in the final when Muldowney's 5.95/239.36 beat Terry Capp's quicker 5.91/238. On May 3, she took another win at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. She qualified #3 and beat Don Garlits in the semifinal before beating Chris Karamesines in the final. Another win came on May 17 at Cayuga Dragway Park in Canada for an NHRA Eastern Regional. There, she set Top Speed at 239.36 before running a 6.21/231.36 in the final over Kerry Sweigart's 6.29/225. Shirley skipped over the following two NHRA events, not going to either the Cajun Nats or the Mile High meet in Denver. Early June found Shirley racing at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A 6.10/236.85 qualified #2. A first-round 6.19/229.60 took care of Dale Wilch's Chevy-powered car, and in the semifinal, a 6.24/234.99 beat Fred Snavely. In the final, she faced #1 qualifier Garlits. Garlits ran the track's first five in the final, a 5.99/237.47 to win over her 6.23/203. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, a 5.90/214.28 qualified #4. A first-round 5.92/243 beat Marvin Graham, but David Pace beat her in the semifinal with a 5.92. Shirley tried hard setting Top Speed at 244.56. She won the AHRA Nationals in San Antonio, Texas, setting Low ET at 5.84 in the final while beating Garlits. In July, at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, the combination just wasn't there. She lost two engines in qualifying before making the field with a 5.86/238.72 (#11). She then wounded another engine in her first-round loss to Smart. At the next NHRA event, the Grandnationals, a 5.97/243.24 left her outside the eight-car field (#4 alternate). In August, Shirley competed at the AHRA Western Nationals at Bonneville Raceway. She qualified #4 and beat Karamesines in the first round, with a 6.05/243. She got a free ride into the final when Joanne Reynolds broke. In the final, she met Ruth, who laid down a 5.90 (Low ET) at 236 to beat her 6.03/231. It was the same outcome at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Ruth stopped Muldowney again in the finals with a 5.74/238, beating her 5.89/202. Times were way low at this meet due to questionable clocks at Spokane. She had Top Speed at the US Nationals, qualifying #8 with a 5.74 and another 5.74 in the first round, beat Oswald (5.84), but she lost in the second round.

Notes: Ruth started the season at the AHRA Winternationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.28/234 but lost to Don Garlits in the final. He qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, hitting 5.80 for the top spot and a first-round 5.85/243 that beat Gene Snow. In the second round, a 5.95/240 lost to Richard Tharp's 5.83/243. On March 8, he went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 5.96/234.98 qualified #5. He beat Gary Beck in the first round, with a 6.00/225.56, and when Dennis Baca lost fire in round two, he singled with a 5.92/221.67 into the semifinal. Unfortunately, paired against Shirley Muldowney, he smoked the tires to an 8.35 and lost to her 5.84 Low ET blast. In July, he ran a best of 6.16/230.17 at the NHRA Mile High Nationals, which was good for the #3 alternate. On August 16, he was at Bonneville Raceway for the AHRA Western Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.91 and in the first round, a 6.03/228 beat Junior Kaiser. In the semifinal, the "King" met the "King," Ruth beat Garlits with a slower 6.02/228 to Don's 6.00/245. In the final, he met the "Queen" as he faced off against Shirley. It took a new track record 5.90 at 236 to win over her 6.03/231. He faced her in the final again the following week at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. He set a new AHRA ET record of 5.57 in qualifying and ran 5.82/237 over Chris Karamesines and 5.98/219 in the semifinal over a fouling Garlits. In the final, Ruth's 5.74/238 beat Shirley's 5.89. He qualified #4 with a 5.72 at the NHRA US Nationals, but as mentioned above, he lost the quickest side-by-side race ever in the first round, when Connie Kalitta's 5.74 beat his 5.77. Garlits got one back from Ruth at the AHRA Autumn Nationals at Seattle. The two met in the finals, and Don's 5.97 beat Jerry's close 5.89 for the title. In October, Ruth ran at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. There, a 5.85/233.16 qualified #11. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.95/222.77 wasn't good enough to get around Jeb Allen's 5.73/244.56. He qualified much better at the NHRA World Finals, where a 5.74/238.09 notched the #4 spot. A better 5.72/242.58 beat Kalitta (5.83/236) in the first round, but in round two, a sleepy 6.09 lost to Dwight Salisbury's 6.11.

Notes: Amazing (and frankly, questioned) 5.84 at Sacramento on March 23/1974, was 15th entry into the Cragar Five Second Club. Gary qualified #18 at Bakersfield for the March Meet with a 6.42. In the first round, his opponent, Frank Prock was shut off on the line with an oil leak and Ritter advanced, but in round two his 6.44 lost to Tony Nancy's 6.32. As mentioned, he ran 5.84 at Sacramento on March 23. Gary made it into the final there against James Warren, but his 6.35/225.00 got him the runner-up spot to Warren's 6.16/235. He was at Fremont at the end of March for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Unfortunately, he was late in the first round, and his 6.48/219.51 lost to Dwight Hughes' 6.67. DNQ at Indy at 6.333/230.17 and DNQ at Ontario at 6.062/218.97.

Notes: First car over 260 with a 262.39 National Record at Gainesville in March 1984 (backed up by 260.11). Just beat Kenny Bernstein to the mark. Did it partially by coming out with a much taller wing than normal (AKA the Kareem Abdul Jabbar wing). Later upped the mark at the Summernationals. Also ran 263.92 at the Cajun Nationals in June 1984. | Joe started the season with a runner-up finish at the season opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #3 with a 5.59/254.23. In the first round his 5.61/243.90 beat Bill Carter's 5.71/245. In round two he ran a single when Chuck Haase broke behind the line. Unfortunately, Joe hurt an engine on the solo and had to replace it with a new "bullet" for the semifinals. There, he faced Don Garlits and Amato won easily with a 5.84/230.17 over "Big Daddy's" 6.01/240. In the final, he ran Gary Ormsby and the two ran a real close race with Gary taking the win with a 5.66/243 over Joe's hard charging 5.67/254.25. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals he made history with the sport's first 260 mph run. He started by qualifying #2 with a 5.53/259.36 behind Gary Beck's Low ET of the meet 5.47. In the first round, a 5.55/257.87 beat Carter's off pace 6.28. In round two, a 5.61/259.36 beat Chris Karamesines' 5.80/243. He broke the 260 mph barrier in the semifinals with a 5.58/260.11 that defeated Winternationals winner Ormsby's 5.66/249. In the final he met with low qualifier Beck. Joe got the victory and improved his Top Speed to a 262.39 at 5.54 in defeating Gary's 5.68/245. A new era had arrived. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Joe grabbed another win. It was an eight-car show and in the first round, he beat an out of shape Gary Read with a 5.56/255.68. In the semifinals, a 5.62 beat Shirley Muldowney's 5.72. In the final, he ran 5.60/259.36 (Top Speed) to beat out Dick LaHaie's 5.64/249. In May, Amato upped his speed to 263.92 at State Capitol Raceway near Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He ran that speed while qualifying #2 with a 5.53 in the eight-car show. In round one, he beat Danny Danell with a 5.65/257.87, but in the semifinals, he had a rear end break and he lost to Beck who went on to win the event.

Notes: Marvin's luck turned around in 1980, and he set a new record ET at 5.683/248.61 at Indy and won Sanair with 5.777/247.93 numbers. He also was runner-up to Shirley Muldowney at Seattle. The team set Low ET and or Top Speed at several national events. Marvin ended the season as the Division 6 Top Fuel Champion and placed fourth in the NHRA driver points race. The team raced two cars this year. Low qualifier at Indy 1980. Low qualifier at Sanair 80 at 5.812/243.24. Ran 242.58 at Ontario 80. For sale ad claimed a 5.84 average ET for 1980. Marvin qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his 6.14/234.98 in the first round, lost to Richard Tharp's 6.01/246 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He was at the Bakersfield March Meet but failed to reach the finals, and at the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #13 and lost to Bob Noice in round one. He picked up a win at the NHRA Divisional race at Beeline, where he ran a final round 6.36/232.55 to stop Phil Lukens. On March 30, Graham was at Green Valley for the NHRA Division 4 race. He lost in the first round. The Marc Danekas team started to pick it up in April. At the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Fremont, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 5.86/240.64. He ran steady 6.0's to advance to the final, where he picked up to 5.92/245.23 (Top Speed) to get the victory over Noel Reese. At the second NHRA Division 6 race at Seattle, he again qualified #1 with a 5.99/240.00 in the eight-car show. A first-round 5.97 beat Doug Kerhulas' 6.28. In the semifinals, he ran 5.94/241.93 but lost to Jerry Ruth's Low ET run of 5.91/240. The third NHRA Division 6 race was held at OCIR on May 17, and Marvin ran 5.94/246.57 to qualify #2 behind Gary Beck's 5.89. Unfortunately, Graham had troubles in the first round, and his 6.49/238.09 lost to Mark Prudhomme's holeshot aided 6.69/190. The team continued to qualify well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where Graham's 5.95/240.64 qualified #2. In the first round, he had an engine let go in the bleach box and could not run his opponent Steve Stephens. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Graham's 5.89/240.64 qualified #4. He picked up to a 5.85/242.58 in the first round, to beat Kerry Sweigart, and in the second round, Beck's car broke on the line, so he soloed with a 5.94/239.36. But in the semifinals, he hazed the tires to a 6.02 that wasn't enough to beat Jeb Allen's 5.92.

Notes: Gene Snow was testing his car at the Texas Motorplex in January. He had Brad Tuttle there to serve as crew chief. The tests were mainly to see how to get the car to launch. The best time was a run to the 800-foot mark before he shut down to a 5.17/206. Gene started the NHRA season by setting Low ET in qualifying #1 for the Winternationals with a track record 4.98 at 268.73. Another 4.98/255.02 beat Jim Head's 5.29/261 in the first round. He exploded a supercharger in round two and slowed to a 5.24/210.42 loss against Dick LaHaie's winning 5.08/273. At the next NHRA event, the Arizona Nationals, a 5.05/248.07 qualified #9. He beat LaHaie in the first round, and a 5.10/257 in round two beat low qualifier Jimmy Nix, who lost a blower belt. In the semifinals, Snow's 5.12 lost to Joe Amato's 5.08. He qualified #9 again at the next NHRA race, the Supernationals at Houston on March 4. This time, a 5.02/253.59 got the spot. He broke in the first round, but his 26.46 (yikes) won when Mike Brotherton also broke. A second round 5.08/253.09 beat Frank Bradley, and in the semifinals, both he and Amato fought for traction, with Gene's 7.23/114.54 coming out on top over Joe's 7.91/140. In the final, he ran LaHaie, and Dick took the win when Snow fouled. Gene failed to qualify at the IHRA opening Winternationals at Darlington (second alternate). Only 11 cars tried to make the eight-car field. Fortunately for him, two cars broke, and he got into the show. He beat Jack Ostrander in the first round with a tire-smoking 5.80/204.90. He smoked the tires again in the semifinals and lost to Wayne Bailey. At the Gatornationals, a 5.13/265.48 qualified #8. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. It was then off to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Gene qualified #2 with a 4.99/277.34. He beat Ostrander in the first round but in round two, a 5.14 lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.13. At the sixth NHRA event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park, Gene ran 5.14 to qualify #9. He lasted until round two when Amato's 5.02 beat his 5.07. He made it into the final at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.21/264.08 qualified #9. He beat Head in the first round and smoked the tires in round two but advanced when Amato fouled. In the semifinals, he met another Texan, Eddie Hill. Gene's 5.10/258 beat Eddie's 5.22/261, putting the "Snowman" in the final against Ormsby. In the final, he ran quicker than Gary, but his 5.14/260.11 was only good for runner-up to Ormsby's 5.15/279. He qualified #6 at the NHRA Springnationals but only got as far as the first round, where he lost to LaHaie. He followed the NHRA tour up to Canada for the Grandnationals on June 23. He qualified last in the sixteen-car field with a 5.40/233.09. Amato stopped him in the first round. He hadn't run the last two IHRA events but made the Empire Nationals on July 1 and cleaned up. He set Low ET in the final while beating Hill for the victory with a 5.18/266.41 to Eddie's 5.46/257. Earlier, he had set Top Speed at 269.92. A week later (July 8), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.03/272.89 but smoked the tires in the second round and lost to Frank Hawley. At the NHRA Mile High Nationals, a 5.31/237.78 qualified #4. He lost to Junior Kaiser in the first round. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Sonoma for the California Nationals at the end of July. Gene qualified #5 with a 5.10/264.62 and made it to the semifinals. A first-round loss followed at the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Seattle when his 5.13/268.09 fell to Ostrander's 5.13/274. On August 19, he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #6 with a 5.10/264.31 and a first-round 5.14/261.09 beat Jim Head's 5.18/265. In round two, a 5.25/262.00 lost to LaHaie's 5.06/277. A week later (August 26), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, and although he failed to reach the finals, he did set Low ET at 5.19. Every racer wants to do his best at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, and Gene was probably less than pleased with his first-round loss to LaHaie there. He had only qualified #12 with a 5.20. He ran much better at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals on September 16. He qualified #6 with a 5.02 but stepped up to a 4.93 (Low ET and track record) at 269.78 in the first round, over Kenny Bernstein's 5.05/275. A second-round 4.99/270 beat a tire-smoking Shirley Muldowney, and in the semifinals, a 4.98 took care of Amato's 5.01. Unfortunately, he broke in the finals, slowing to a 7.03/125.20 and having to watch as Ormsby ran a 4.99/274 for the win. He went to Darlington for the IHRA US Open. Only seven cars showed for the eight spots, and Gene qualified #2. After that, he dominated the race. A first-round 5.66/241.21 beat Richard Holcomb. In the semifinals, a 5.33/240.84 beat Bailey. In the final, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.32/259.69 while winning over Mike Brotherton. Things took a complete turn at the next event, the NHRA Heartland Nationals. He qualified last with a 5.15/263.77 and lost to Ormsby in the first round. At the season-ending IHRA Fallnationals, once again, Snow grabbed a win. A final round 5.27 beat Holcomb's 5.62 for the victory. At the second to last NHRA race of the year, the Chief Nationals at Ennis, Texas, a 5.06/270.75 qualified #14. He lost to Lori Johns' 4.98 in the first round. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from Indy 1990.

Notes: First 230 MPH Fueler and 227.85 national record at Irwindale on 9/30/67. | Ran all time best 6.89 Top Fuel ET at OCIR in August '67 (6.89/223), but bettered by others at Indy '67. - Bill McLauchlan | Qualified at Pomona Winternationals '67 at 7.372/218.44. This team was on top of their game in '67. As mentioned, the 7.37 qualified #11 at Pomona. James advanced past a non-firing Ron Rolstad in the first round, with an 8.05/159.01, but in round two his 7.48/209.30 lost to Jerry Ruth's 7.40/212. On February 12 they were at Irwindale for an eight-car show. James qualified #7 with a 7.30/204.08. He beat Gerry Glenn in the first round, with a 7.23/107.84, but as the speed attests, he lost a motor while winning and was unable to continue. Glenn got back in on the break rule and went on to win the race. Warren was runner-up at the first annual Stardust Open at Las Vegas. He lost in the final to Mike Snively in the "Hawaiian." He won the ninth annual T-Timers race at San Fernando on March 19. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 7.31 (Low ET). A first-round 7.48/212.26 beat Wayne King's 7.74/209. In the semifinal, he beat Larry Dixon in the "Fireside Inn" roadster. In the final, he ran a 7.37/212.76 (Top Speed) to win over Neil Leffler's 8.04 in the A&W car. On April 2, the team qualified #4 with a 7.56/206.42 at Fresno, but in the first round, the rear end let go. Warren and Coburn had a big day on April 16 at Fresno. They came off the truck and qualified with a 7.42/226.70. Before the end of the day, they hit 230.17 in eliminations. Unfortunately, they didn't win as Warren fouled out of competition. Lions held an eight-car show on April 22 and Warren set Top Speed of the meet at 223.88 during qualifying. In the first round, he beat Ron Hampshire with a 7.61/217.38. James lost in the semifinal to Bob Mayer. They finished runner-up at an eight-car show at Irwindale on May 13. James qualified #1 with a 7.19, and he beat Steve Carbone's 7.37 in the first round, with a 7.26/222.22. In the semifinal, he set a 224.42 track record while beating Tom Toler. He lost to Mike Sorokin in the "Hawaiian II" in the final. He was runner-up again at Irwindale the following week (May 20). He got to the final of the eight-car show by running 7.35/207.36 over the Doss Brothers and 7.39/201.78 over Bob Mayer's 7.59/194. A red light ended his run in the final against Jeep Hampshire. On June 10, they were at Lions for an eight-car show. A 7.18 qualified #1 and a 7.09 (Low ET) at 217.99 won his first-round race, but they broke and were unable to run in the semifinal. Breakage was a problem for the team as they once again ran well at Lions on June 24. It was another eight-car show and in the first round, James ran 7.26/221.66 to win, but in the semifinal, he lost a motor and the race. Irwindale held a sixteen-car show on July 8. Warren beat Leroy Goldstein in the first round, with a 7.27/221.66, but in the second round, his 7.76/150.50 lost to Jim Dunn's 7.37/219. On July 29, James set a new track record 6.96 at Irwindale. He won an eight-car event at OCIR on August 12. A final round 7.14/218.96 beat Dave Beebe in the final. At the NHRA US Nationals, they qualified #4 with a 6.87/222.76. James made it all the way to the finals of the 32 car show before losing to Don Garlits' 6.77/220 in the final with a 6.95/222.71. I'm sure that they felt a little better the following week (September 9) after Indy when they ran at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale. They qualified for the show with a 7.25/219.50 (Top Speed). James won his first-round race with a 7.14 (Low ET) at 219.50 (again). A second round 7.28/206.88 beat Bob Hightower and a semifinal 7.41/180.72 took care of Ray Ayres. In the final, he won the event with a 7.31/201.34 over Jim Nicoll. Another win came their way at the final NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale on September 30. There they qualified #2 with a 6.99/227.84 (Top Speed). John Mulligan was first with a 6.96. They both made their way to the final. James got to the final by running 6.93/227.26 in the first round, over Mayer, a second round 6.89 (Low ET) at 227.26 over a fouling Goldstein. In the semifinal, a 6.99/204.54 beat Don Prudhomme. In the final, he beat Mulligan for the title. At Irwindale's second annual Grand Prix, the Warren and Coburn team looked like they were on their way to another win. They qualified #1 with a 6.89 in the 32 car field. He had two easy rounds before running a 7.03/221.12 over Ray Ayres' 7.16/218 in the third round. In the semifinal, he set a new track ET record at 6.78 at 221.66. But in the final, Bobby Tapia ran a 7.00/226 to beat Warren. They were at Lions for the Drag News All-Pro Race on October 21. It was another 32 car show. In the first round, James ran 6. 94/210.28 to beat Beebe's 7.38. In the second round, a 7.13/184.41 beat the "Mr. Ed" car. He took out Tom McEwen in the third round with a 6.89/218.44. But in the semifinal, he lost to Mulligan. Irwindale held a sixteen-car show on November 4, where almost 40 cars attempted to qualify. Warren qualified #1 at 6.93/227.84. He worked his way to the final by running 7.25/225.56 over a fouling Bob Downey, a 6.95/202.23 advanced past round two and a semifinal 7.19/225 got him into the final. In the final, he faced McEwen who was using a Tim Beebe built 392 Hemi for this meet. Tom ran a 7.21/221 in the final, but he lost to Warren's Low ET and Top Speed blast of 6.91/229. As the year was coming to an end, Warren made an attempt for another win on December 17 at OCIR. He qualified #2 with a 7.00/221.12, but failed to reach the final.

Notes: After a multi-year contract with TRW ended over the Winter of '89, Amato found new sponsorship from Valvoline for '90. He had finished #2 in the NHRA points chase in '89 and was hoping to do better in '90. Joe started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where the new 3.20 rear-end rule didn't seem to slow him down. He qualified #3 with a 5.03/282.39 (Top Speed), but in the first round, he dropped a cylinder and slowed to 5.24/253.66 in a loss to Don Prudhomme's 5.15/270. The next race was the Arizona Nationals. Amato qualified #5 with a 4.99 at a track record speed of 282.92. He then went on to win by beating Connie Kalitta with a 5.04/281.07; a 5.03/275.48 in round two beat Frank Bradley's 5.11/271, and a 5.08/273.97 in the semifinals stopped Gene Snow's 5.12/268. Joe faced '89 NHRA Top Fuel Champion Gary Ormsby in the final, and Joe's 5.05/275.14 got the victory over Ormsby's 5.11. This was his first NHRA victory in eight months. He qualified #5 again at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. This time a 4.99/280.37 got him the spot. In round one, Joe beat Top Fuel rookie Ken Koretsky with a 5.08/276.66, while a 5.04/271.98 took out Leo Gastellum in round two. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 7.91/140.09 loss against Snow, who also had problems at 7.23/114. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.06/282.84 qualified #3. Both he and his first-round opponent, Eddie Hill, smoked the tires in the first round, and Eddie's 5.98/256 got to the line before Joe's 6.24/203.06. He then won the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham early in April. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.04/279.58 (Top Speed) qualified second behind Darrell Gwynn's 4.94/277. These two would reach the final together. In the opening round, Joe's 5.02/277.34 beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.14/272, and he beat the other former Funny Car driver, Prudhomme, in the semifinal with a 5.01 279.06, which beat the "Snake's" 5.24/265. Both he and Gwynn had run similar times to reach the final, and Amato even had lane choice. But it was Amato's driving that got the win as he was first off the line, and his 5.04/272.64 outran Gwynn's 5.02/277. Sadly, that was the last NHRA event Gwynn ran due to his accident in England on Easter. Joe set a track record 4.96 in qualifying #1 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His speed on the run was 280.11. The car slowed to 5.14/272.14 in the opening round, but it was still enough to beat Gastellum's 5.26/269. Another 5.14 at 273.63 defeated Jim Head's 5.21/265 in round two. The team found the problem for their slower times was a weak fuel pump. It was changed for his semifinal race with Bradley and Joe shot to 5.00/287.17 to win over Frank, who overpowered the track and smoked the tires. The speed was tops for the race and was five miles per hour faster than any other run made there. He faced Lori Johns in the final, and both ran 5.02 (Amato at 282.30), but the lady crossed the stripe first. These two would also face off in the final at NHRA's next event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Joe's career-best (to this point) of 4.941/288.46 qualified #1 and broke both ends of the track record. He got lucky in the first round, as he blew his engine on his "odd-lot" solo. The crew installed a new "bullet" for round two, and his 5.02/274 beat Snow's 5.07. Both he and Johns ran 4.99 in winning their semifinal races, with Amato having the better speed at 282 while beating Bernstein. But once again, Amato finished runner-up to Johns as he smoked the tires while she ran 5.00/270 to win. Aside from qualifying #1 with a 5.03 (Low ET) at 281.95, the NHRA Cajun Nationals was not a great race for the team. Only 15 cars showed, so he got a solo in round one, before fouling against Snow in round two. Things went better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 5.04/279.06 qualified second to Frank Hawley's 5.04/275 in Gwynn's car. He stayed in the 5.0 zone by beating Koretsky's 5.33/266 in the opening round with a 5.09/275.98 and a 5.06/277 in round two beat Bradley. In the semifinal, he fell off to 5.13/272.47, but it was still enough to stop Dick Lahaie's 5.16/267. Joe was going into his 45th NHRA Top Fuel final. The two lowest qualifiers met in the final, and Hawley's 5.12/278 got an emotional victory over Amato's 5.22/272.47. Plus 4.939 low qualifier at the 1990 Chief Auto Parts Nationals. He ran 4.955 at Englishtown. Speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from Indy 1990.

Notes: Bill, I am trying to find a copy of Drag Digest featuring My Top Fuel car at Long Beach on the front cover. Gary Gabelich was at the wheel; on his first pass in my car (a driver qualification pass), he turned a 7.05 ET; the strip record was 6.99 ET at the time. I don't know who took the photo. Any ideas you may have would be appreciated. Thanks, Terry Gall | I was Terry Gall's partner in this Gabelich-piloted endeavor. Indeed, the George Cerny Candy Yellow Striped cowl was tagged "Gall & Laswell." And Terry might be right about the Lions track ET record being 6.99, but I remember it differently as we were trying to back up the 7.05 when the supercharger inhaled an injector bolt. In other words, "Why try to back up a 7.05 when it would have been insignificant?" Moreover, I also remember being the "second quickest" Top Fuel car in discussion with Ronnie Rapp, who I worked with at Ansen. Of course, Gabelich once drove the Purple Gang car owned by Rapp, Rossi, and Maldonado. Maybe also of interest is that Gene Creitz walked up to us while we were in "The Beach" pits, saying he heard us warming up when he was at the starting line. Saying it was the "Strongest" Fuel Chrysler he had ever heard, he walked back to find out whose car it was. Usually pitting next to Popcorn Pam's Hot Dog trailer that was some 200 or so yards away. Sincerely, Teddy Laswell | Update 4/14 — There was no mistaking a "Woody Car" as the two bottom frame rails began to twist and curl just behind the rear-end upright, "Swooping" upward and terminating at the 180-degree bend of the top frame rail some 6"-8" apart. There were no other car builders in that era who approximated that design. Indeed, I think some tall drivers, like Paul Sutherland, could see over the Blower (I'll call him and ask him about that). Sitting somewhat higher, enough to be significantly noticeable from an outsider's viewpoint, seeing over the Blower was an advantage, especially at night. Trying to see between a "Wall of fire" from the headers and the Blower, coupled with the "Normal" vibration, trying to see the car in the opposite lane was near impossible. Sincerely, Teddy Laswell

Notes: Darrell set National Record at 5.052 at Seafair Nats in Seattle in 1988 and ran 280.02 at Gainesville 3/88. Were the 4.99/286.53 times run at the Ennis All-Stars or IHRA? Gwynn ran a two-speed as late as the Summernationals. Did he convert to direct drive this year? Photo from Columbus 1988.
