Notes: Kalitta was at Firebird Raceway in Jan during the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event, testing his car. He ran times of 5.61/249.30 and 5.63/237.46. Connie qualified #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.73/236.09. He beat Shannon Stuart in the first round before his 5.69/202 lost to Joe Amato's 5.49/264 in the second round. At the Gatornationals, he ran 5.68/230.65 to qualify #8. He beat Jack Revelle with a 5.63/212.36, but in the second round, his parachute released early, and he lost to Dick LaHaie. Kalitta attempted to qualify for the eight-car show in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, but his 5.75/250.97 best was good for the first alternate. In May, he was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show, but this time he qualified. In the first round, he ran Don Garlits, and although they both ran 5.77s, "Big Daddy" got the win. The next stop for the NHRA tour was Columbus, Ohio, for the Springnationals at National Trail. Kalitta qualified with a 5.70, putting him in the dreaded #9 spot. That spot put him in the first-round race with low qualifier Amato, a race that Joe won. At the end of June, NHRA went to Canada for the Grandnationals, where Kalitta ran 5.58/255.68 to qualify for #4 in the eight-car show. A first-round 5.54/260.26 beat LaHaie's 5.60/259, and he made it past the semifinals to run against Garlits in the final. There, Conrad ran a good 5.62/256.41, but it wasn't good enough as Garlits took the victory with a 5.48/262. In qualifying for the Summernationals at Englishtown in July, Kalitta ran a career-best (to this point) 5.52 at 254.09 to qualify #4. He beat Chris Karamesines in the first round, and in round two, a 5.57/259 beat Amato. He lost to Darrell Gwynn in the semifinals. Conrad took a big win at the next event, the Mile High Nationals in Denver. He qualified #2 with a 5.63/259.36 and made his way to the finals of the eight-car field. He faced Bill Mullins and beat him with a 5.62 to Mullins' 5.68. Things continued to go well when he also racked up the Northstar Nationals win. At Brainerd, he qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 5.551/258.62. He ran career bests of 5.458/264.70 (track records), beating Garlits' 5.576/259 in the first round. A semifinal 5.531/236.22 advanced when Gary Ormsby fouled. In the final, he met another long-time racer, Gene Snow. Kalitta's 5.523/260.86 took the victory over Snow's 5.63/255. Kalitta hoped to make it three in a row when they rolled into Indianapolis for the US Nationals. A 5.61/261.62 qualified #7 for the show. He had the second Low ET of the first round when his 5.60/259.06 beat Junior Kaiser. Unfortunately, a strong second-round run of 5.65/257.28 lost to Garlits' 5.63/261. The next event on the NHRA schedule was the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. It was a tough show to make with the eight cars all qualified at 5.53 or better. Kalitta was in the middle of the pack with a 5.50/256.41 that qualified #5. He lost to low qualifier Gary Beck in the first round. At the Fallnationals, Connie qualified #4 with a 5.54/241.93.

Notes: In 1982, Johnny ran 5.54 in Gary, Indiana (AHRA), then ran 5.58 in Spokane, Washington (AHRA). Ran speeds of 253.62 at Spokane and a questionable 262.40 at Gary. NOTE: The 262 predated Joe Amato's 262.39 Gainesville run by two years, so it is not listed as John's official speed for 1982. | Abbott was at Bonneville Raceway for the AHRA Western Nationals on August 15. He qualified for the eight-car field, but in the first round, of eliminations, his 6.05/231.27 lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.89/238. The following week (August 22), he was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. He made it to the final by running 5.75/231.95 over Bill Beitscher and 5.90/243.24 over Frank Bradley's 5.92/249 in the semifinals. This set up a final round race between him and Don Garlits. Garlits was hard to beat at an AHRA race in the early eighties (or any time for that matter!), and he proved why. Garlits' 5.66/251 got the victory over Johnny's 5.91/244.56. Lived in the 5.80s and high 240s in NHRA competition, hitting best numbers of 5.808/248.61 at the Gators. | In May, at an OCIR open 8-car MD benefit event, Billy Meyer won FC, Johnny Abbott TF. - Joe Moore

Notes: Eddie and his wife, Ercie Hill, were fan favorites. He made the fans happy by winning the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. It was Eddie's first win in eighteen months. He had qualified #1 at 4.80/301.00. A 4.88/296.15 defeated Rance McDaniel in the first round. Kenny Bernstein's 4.96/291 fell to his 4.79/301.70 in round two, and his 4.89/298.80 beat Mike Dunn's 4.93/293 in the semi-final. He faced Scott Kalitta in the final, and while Scott was smoking the tires, Hill ran 4.85/299.50 for the victory. Only fifteen cars showed at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, and Eddie's 4.75/299.80 qualified #3. He left early after smoking the tires to a 6.19/245 in the opening round that lost to Bernstein's 4.86/305. He also qualified well at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals, where his 4.77/300.80 got him the #4 spot in the field. He slowed to 4.98/281.86 in the first round and lost to Pat Austin's 4.90/295. There were some tense moments during qualifying at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Hill had not yet qualified going into the last session, and crew chief Fuzzy Carter took a wild swing at it and hoped for the best. Eddie's run looked strong before the engine through the blower belt. His coasting 4.86/250.41 was still able to qualify #9. He had more problems in round one, but his 6.57/188.28 still beat Bernstein's up-in-smoke run. In round two, Hill's 4.94/288.27 finished second best to Blaine Johnson's 4.89/295. Things didn't go well at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was just an eight-car show, and his 4.95/284.45 was the first alternate. The team then went to Atlanta, where Hill's 4.83/293.62 qualified #2 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. But tire shake did him in in the first round, and he lost to Austin. The "Pennzoil" car was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals in the first week of May. As usual, qualifying was part of the story. Hill was on a qualifying run when the car went into a huge wheelstand. It landed hard enough to damage an A-arm. After replacing, he still ran 4.83/297.32 for the #5 spot in the field. In the first round, his 4.85/295.66 beat Connie Kalitta's 5.05/285. Once again, tire smoke did him in in round two, and his shut-off 6.86/128.92 lost to Mike Dunn's 4.94/291. He converted to a new 499 comp number, formerly 489. Jim Hawkins' DragStats confirm ET and speed.

He then set Low ET in the semi-final with a 4.74/298.70 over Scott's dad, Connie Kalitta, who followed him through at a career-best 4.80/298. He faced Amato in the final, and Cory picked up the win with a 4.98. He "only" qualified #5 at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals with a 4.79/298.11. He beat Pat Austin in the first round while setting Top Speed at 304.98. Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Also ran 4.944 low qualifier at Topeka 91. Photo from 1991 US Nationals. | Hill was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #7 with a 5.03/277.94. Cory McClenathan broke against him in the first round, so Hill advanced with a 5.39/267.77. In round two, he got another easy win when Joe Amato had problems and a 5.92/271.08 moved him into the semifinals. There he met up with eventual winner Frank Bradley. Eddie’s 5.23/275.90 lost to Frank's 5.15/268. The team failed to qualify for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, but a 5.09/276.15 qualified #12 at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Unfortunately, Hill lost to Frank Hawley in the opening round. The "Pennzoil" car looked really strong at the NHRA Gatornationals. Eddie qualified #1 with a 4.92/281.69. He beat Jim Head's 5.16/268 in the first round, with a 5.02/271.90, but in round two the car sneezed a blower and lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.07/274. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 4.96/282.66 qualified #4 and an even better 4.94 in round one, beat Jack Ostrander. A late leaving 5.00/277 lost to McClenathan's 5.03/280 in round two. At the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Hill qualified #9 with a 5.08/277.60. In the opening round Gene Snow smoked the tires against him and a 5.70/269.78 advanced. In round two, Hill had more problems getting hooked up and his 5.62/271.73 lost to Joe Amato's 5.05/276. He then made a stop at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.21/273.02. But in the first round, the car went up in smoke and he lost to Robert Reehl. He was back on the NHRA trail for the Springnationals in Columbus. His 5.06/281.33 qualified #3 and he beat Reehl's 5.17/266 in the first round, with a 5.10/274.30. But he continued having trouble getting past the second round of eliminations. This time Prudhomme stopped him with a 5.16/276 to Eddie's 5.18/274.47. They made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where qualifying was not a problem as only thirteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Still, Fuzzy Carter tuned Hill's car to a 5.14/270.83 to qualify #7. In round one, his opponent Snow got out on him and his 5.19/272.72 lost to the "Snowman's" 5.21/273. The NHRA Summernationals saw more of the same. Hill ran 4.98/282.39 to qualify #4 and a first-round 5.08/278.63 beat Ostrander's 5.36/278.1. But as usual, in round two a 5.09/275.73 fell to Prudhomme's 5.01/280. The team had to be frustrated as they still had not reached the semifinals this season. That changed at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Eddie "only" qualified #7 with a 5.25/267.53, but his 5.22/268.81 beat Dick LaHaie’s 5.32/261 in the opening round. A round two 5.17/268.57 beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.27/274, but all good things must come to an end and in the semis, he smoked the tires to a 5.64/258.62 loss to Amato's 5.09/271. It was a step in the right direction. But at the next race, the NHRA California Nationals at Sonoma, Hill had trouble in the first round, and slowed to 6.11/165.47 in a loss to LaHaie’s 5.06/277. Hill qualified #10 at 5.07/282.92. Eddie had one of five cars that ran a "four" in qualifying at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. His 4.99/284.18 got him the #5 spot for the show. He improved to 4.98/284.99 in the first round, over Snow's 5.07/256, but he lost in round two to Gordie Bonin who was driving for Gary Ormsby.

Notes: Ed qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 4.86/294.50. In round one, his 4.87/298.50 defeated Scott Kalitta's 4.91/284. He had a close race with Joe Amato that saw both drivers run 4.86 (Ed at 298.01), but Amato crossed the stripe first. He qualified second at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where his 5.83/298.50 followed Cory McClenathan's 4.82/297. In the opening round, he was upset by Scott Kalitta. At Houston, he set a new track record 4.81 at 298.50 in qualifying #1 for the NHRA Supernationals.McClenathan fouled against him in the opening round, and Ed's 4.87/295.56 advanced. In the second round, Kenny Bernstein's car broke and slowed to 5.19/212, losing to McCulloch's 4.99/291.07. He then beat Doug Herbert in the semifinal with a 4.87/298.11. He faced Rance McDaniel in the final, and the two had a great race, with Ed winning with a 4.90/285.44 over McDaniel's 4.92/284. This was McCulloch's 22nd NHRA National event victory, stretching into '92; it was his fourth win at the last eight NHRA events. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 4.88/293.63 qualified #4 again and made his way into the final. He started by running 4.92/294.50 to beat Pat Dakin, followed by a 5.01/286.98 over a fouling McDaniel at 4.89/296. In the semifinal, he dispatched Mike Dunn's 5.07/276 with a 4.90/296.24. In the final, he faced Eddie Hill, and Hill's 4.87/286 got the win over Ed's slightly quicker 4.86/294.02. Surprisingly, he failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. His 4.98/291.35 was the first alternate, but when McClenathan crashed during qualifying, Ed got into the show. Amato smoked the tires against him in the first round, and McCulloch's 5.10/265.33 advanced. But in the semifinals, Ed smoked the tires and shut off against eventual winner Scott Kalitta. NHRA's next stop was at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals near the end of April. Ed qualified #8 with a 4.94/294.40, but he lost in round one to Dunn. Another first-round loss occurred at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. He qualified #3 with a 4.94/293.25, but his 5.08/253.60 in the first round lost to Tommy Johnson Jr's 5.05/290. He "only" qualified #15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals with a 4.97/282.04, but he improved to 4.93/282.04 in round one to take out Hill. An off-pace 5.17/221.79 in the second round lost to Dunn's 4.95/278. Then came the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. Ed's 5.02/288.46 qualified #8. Once again, Dunn stopped him, this time in the first round, where his 5.02/279 defeated Ed's 5.07/291.73. Twelfth member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club on October 15, 1993, with a 301.70 at Dallas. The 4.815 was the low qualifier at Houston Spring.

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Also, 299.00 at 93 Atlanta Southerns. | After being the other driver to run over 300 mph occasionally in '92, Kenny failed to break 300 even once in '93. It wouldn't be until Memphis in '94 that he ran that number again. But speed doesn't win races. Kenny's first outing of '93 was at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January. It was a rough weekend for him and crew chief Dale Armstrong. Dale was trying out a new cam and testing some new redesigned Dart/Sanchez heads. They made two passes on Friday, where he shut off early on one and banged the blower on the other. On Saturday, Kenny made an early shut-off pass before tire shake killed his second run. A third pass yielded a 4.98/271.65 with some burned pistons. Sunday was no better; a rod dropping 5.06/278.72 ended their weekend when the rod went through the block and damaged the frame. He started the NHRA season by stealing the headlines at Pomona for the Winternationals with his spectacular final round crash while running against Joe Amato for the victory. Amato got the win, but Bernstein got the "ink." Parts of the car stopped the timers at 5.08/221.40. The accident was caused by the engine blowing and throwing parts under the left rear slick. The tire blew, and Kenny lost control and crashed into the wall hard while on fire. He was OK, but the car was totaled. Earlier, he qualified #6 with a 4.89/289.38. A first-round 4.88/293.63 beat Don Prudhomme. In round two, a 4.90 beat Tony Pedregon's 4.99. In the semifinals, a 4.88/292.67 beat Doug Herbert's 4.95/295. At the NHRA Motorcraft Arizona Nationals, Bernstein's 4.91/292.49 qualified #6. In the first round, Jack Ostrander broke, and Kenny advanced with an 8.21/68.00. In round two, he lost to eventual winner Eddie Hill. He qualified #8 at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals with a 4.87/291.54, and in the first round, his 4.91/286.25 beat Shelly Anderson's 4.91/291. But in round two, the "Budweiser King" broke and slowed to 5.19/212.06 in a loss to Ed McCulloch's 4.99/291. The Gatornationals was the next stop on the NHRA tour, and Kenny ran 4.91/297.81 to qualify #10. Unfortunately, he lost to Hill in the first round. Bernstein attempted to qualify at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but his best of 4.98/288.36 left him as the second alternate for the eight-car show. He did much better at Atlanta, where his 4.87/297.42 qualified #3. A quick-leaving 4.94/293.35 beat Jimmy Nix's 4.93/277 in the first round, and in round two, both he and Pat Austin ran 4.93 (Bernstein at 286.54), but Kenny got the win light. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Hill's 4.89/290. It was then off to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. His 4.93/296.34 qualified #2, but he fouled against Herbert in the first round.

Notes: Don started the '84 season by running a best of three match race against Shirley Muldowney at Firebird Raceway. Unfortunately, he lost three straight. Things went much better at the AHRA Winternationals. There he qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.01. He advanced when low qualifier Jerry Ruth blew both a rear end and a motor in the first round. In the semifinals, his 5.90/244.56 beat Dick LaHaie's 5.93/228. He won the race with a final round 5.83/211 when opponent Gene Snow got crossed up and shut off. Garlits lost a match race with Gene Snow in March at Green Valley. Snow won with a 5.80 best over Garlits' trailing 6.31. Don really came alive in the late season. He won Indy and the World Finals with Low 5.50s at 260 plus, with best times of 5.463/263.92 at Ontario. Before that, Don ran 263.92 at Eunice LA in September.

Notes: Speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats, but best NHRA ET Jim shows for 1991 is 4.936 at Maple Grove (at Sonoma equaling 287.72). We need to confirm if the 4.92 is legit and took place at an IHRA event or special event, etc. Didn't win a race this year, but a string of semifinal finishes led to a 4th place finish in the championship. | Frank qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.07/282.30. He improved to 5.04/281.69 in the first round, to beat Kenny Bernstein, but in round two he lost to Dick LaHaie. He qualified #1 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 4.96/283.37 and a 5.02 advanced over LaHaie in round one. In the second round Don Prudhomme smoked the tires against him and his 5.00 moved into the semifinals where he smoked the tires and lost to upstart Craig Smith. It was then on to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Hawley qualified #5 with a 5.01/284.99. He lasted until the second round where his 5.16/261.55 lost to Gene Snow's 5.02/279. Frank continued to run well at the NHRA Gatornationals where a 5.03/282.57 qualified #7. He beat Tommy Johnson Jr in round one, with a 5.06/278.63, but a 5.10/278.20 in round two lost to eventual winner Joe Amato's 5.06/275. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Frank qualified #6 with a 4.97/284.99, but he overpowered the track in the first round, and smoked the tires against Pat Dakin.

Notes: 1972 URC built his & my back motor AA/FD. I have been told mine was #1 with split 2 piece back wing. Dan Olson wing, Hanna Mag body, Tom Stratton paint. I still use same paint scheme now. Info from John Blanchard on Nitroland. ET and MPH run at Lions Last Drag Race. Quickest, fastest iron 392 in history. (When was 6.02 run during the race? Event results show 6.23 in qualifying and shut off loss in first-round. bp) (When & where was the 6.02 run?) | John Blanchard had this car built in three months at a cost of only $5,500. He built the 1,500 hp 392 Hemi himself. The block was bored .030" and a 1/2" stroker crank was used. Howards rods supported 8:1 Venolia pistons and Howards also supplied the cam. Cylinder Head Research got the nod for doing the cylinder heads. A Marc Danekas prepared GMC-6/71 sat on a Cragar manifold and an Enderle injection unit sat on top. A 11" triple-disc Hays clutch fed the power through a Speed Products Engineering direct drive to a 3.90 rear.

Notes: Ran 7.26 National Record at Bristol TN on 9/25/66. Where was the 7.06 from? Ran 7.74/198.22 at Lions on 2/01/66. | Vic was at Tulsa for the NHRA Division 4 race on July 3. He won his first-round race with a 7.81, but in the semifinal, he fouled away a 7.73/200 against Fred Swanda. At the NHRA Division 2 final at Bristol, Vic had a great day. He won the event by getting a first-round solo. In the second round, he set Low ET with a 7.22/210.76 to beat Pete Robinson's Ford. In the final, he met Bill Mullins, but Bill lost a clutch and Brown stormed to a 7.30/195.64 to take the victory. Earlier in the day, he had reset the NHRA record to 7.26. Ran 7.41 at Indy Nationals.

Notes: Holcomb did not race at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was at Darlington in mid-March for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and in round one, his 5.45/260.86 beat Jack Ostrander. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semi-final and lost to Joe Amato. The following week, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.29/276.07 qualified #11. He lost to Frank Bradley in the opening round. Shortly after that, he was at DeSoto Dragway for the IHRA Supernationals. Holcomb's 5.43 in the first round beat Earl Whiting but his 5.46/252 in the semi-final lost to eventual winner Darrell Gwynn's 5.25/262. Richard was the third car in the four-second zone with a 4.998 at Dallas on October 15, 1988 (third entry in the Cragar 4 Second Club for Top Fuel). The car had a rear end SO narrow that the wing struts had to be mounted around the engine. It was an aerodynamics trick to move the HUGE rear slicks out of the wind. Best NHRA times of 5.155 at Houston Fall 1988 and 276.07 at Gainesville 3/88. Photo from Columbus 1988. | On 10/15/88, we put Richard into the 3rd slot in the Cragar 4 second club.
