Notes: In May, Walt qualified #1 with a 6.06/212.27 at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. The 6.06 held up for Low ET of the Meet, and it was almost two-tenths quicker than the #2 qualifier, Marvin Graham, in at 6.22. But in the first round, Walt was paired up against Bill Pryor, and Barbin's car failed to fire. The team's only NHRA national event this year was the Ontario World FInals, where they finished way down the DNQ list (times unavailable).

Notes: Walt "Tricks" Barbin was a DNQ at NHRA Pomona (times unavailable). Frank Holden also had a Top Fuel license and drove at the team's following two NHRA national events, Columbus and Englishtown. Walt was back in the saddle at Indy but was a second alternate DNQ at 6.44/199.11, which makes sense, given that the bump spot was a 6.41. But we show a 6.68/196.93 on one version of the DNQ sheet. Walt was at DeSoto Memorial Raceway for the Snowbird National Open at the end of November. His 6.26/233.76 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. In the first round, his 6.43/223.32 beat Marvin Schwartz, but he left before the tree had even been activated in the semi-final, and eventual winner Ron Correnti soloed into the final. We formerly listed 5.835/234.37, but we think that is the 1980 IHRA Bristol ET and one of the 234.37 NHRA runs from another year. We need confirmation.

Notes: The team ran one NHRA national event, the Cajun Nationals, where Walt was the #5 qualifier at 6.21/237.46. He lost a round one matchup with Kelly Brown, 6.27/231 to 6.36/228.42. Barbin was at LaPlace in May for the NHRA Division Four opener. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.68. That set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Richard Tharp, driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. But Walt's off-pace 7.44/173.07 made it easy for Tharp to advance with his 6.40/230. Walt was at Houston in May for the third NHRA Division 4 race. He ran well, hitting 6.26 and reaching the final against Frank Bradley. Unfortunately, the final didn't go so well for Barbin as he had a bad crash. His clutch exploded, cutting the car in half. It continued to tumble down the track before coming to a stop. Other than a few cuts and bruises, Walt was OK, but the dragster was totaled.

Notes: Early in the year, Walt won the National Dragster Championships. Their NHRA national event debut was the Cajun Nationals, but Walt was the last DNQ (times unavailable). He ran 6.030/234.37 at Columbus to qualify #9 for the NHRA Springnationals. He ran low qualifier Kelly Brown in the first round, and Kelly fouled away a 6.04/206 while Barbin advanced with a 6.069/238.72. His run came to an end in round two where his 6.098/239.36 lost to Rob Bruins' holeshot coupled with a 6.12/240. The team then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where Walt qualified #5 in the eight-car field, but in the first round, his off-pace 6.65 lost to Dave Settles' 5.84 in the "Blue Max" dragster. Walt failed to qualify for the NHRA Summernationals. He was the fifth alternate at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a best of 6.06/241.28. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Jim started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.73/245.23, but in the first round, his 5.78/246.57 lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.71/243. At the NHRA Gatornationals in March, he again qualified well, running 5.75/244.56 for the #3 spot in the field. He beat Dwight Salisbury in the first round, and in round two, his 5.99/233.16 beat Joe Amato's 6.15/220. In the semifinals, he fell off to a 6.02/231.36 that lost to Don Garlits' 5.94/234. He was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, but he lost in the first round, after qualifying #6 with a 5.83/242.58. Barnard picked up a win at Darlington on March 21 for the IHRA Wintenationals. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field and beat Jeb Allen in the first round, and Kalitta in the semifinals with a 5.96. He met up with Gary Beck in Larry Minor's car in the final. Beck smoked the tires and shut off to a 15.93 while Jim picked up the victory with a 6.04/238. Barnard attempted to qualify for the eight-car show at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, but his best of 5.88/233.36 left him the fourth alternate. He tried to score another IHRA victory at Rockingham on May 2 for the Pro-Am Championships, but he only made it into the semifinal before being stopped by Beck. NHRA held another eight-car show at Baton Rouge on May 30 for the Cajun nationals. Jim made sure he qualified here, running an excellent 5.77 for the #2 spot in the field. Beck fouled against him in the first round, and Jim eased it through with a 6.22/215 for the win. He was late off the line in the semifinals, and his 5.88/240 lost to Mark Oswald's 5.93/245. In June, he qualified #12 at the NHRA Springnationals, but he lost to Allen in the first round. A week later (June 20), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Notes: Jim started the '83 season by qualifying #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.813/247.25. Notes: One-time Garlits crew chief drove for the printer Neil Mahr at Gainesville. Qualified at 6.089/236.84, and then beat Johnny Abbott in round one, 6.22 to 6.50. Lost to Don Garlits in round two, 6.19/240 to 6.46/193. That was Ron's only NHRA national event.
