Notes: Tharp was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, driving for Bob Creitz. Dave Babler fouled against him in the first round, and Tharp advanced with a 7.88. In the second round, it was Tharp who fouled, wasting a 6.86 against Dave Chenevert. The team failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Richard qualified for the third OCIR All-Pro race but had problems in the opening round and shut off early against eventual winner Gary Cochran. The team did not race at the Bakersfield March Meet, choosing to run at Lions instead for the second AHRA Grand American race. Both events were run on March 8. It turned out to be a wise move. Tharp won his opening round race with a 6.62 and then made two easy passes, an "odd-lot" solo in round two, and he shut off early in the semifinals when Jimmy King fouled against him. This famous race had Don Garlits' two-speed transmission explode in the final and rip the dragster in half. That explosion happened while racing Tharp in the final. Richard took the victory with a 6.65/223, but few noticed as everyone was looking at the remains of Garlits' car and hoping that he was alright. He lost half his foot, but otherwise, he was ok. Meanwhile, Tharp went to Dallas International the following weekend(March 15) for a best-of-three-match race against Bennie Osborn. Richard won the first two rounds to sew up the match with times of 7.08/200.44 and 7.01/205.94. They still decided to have a third race, and this time, Tharp fouled away a 6.79/217.91. In April, he was at LaPlace for its Spring Drag Festival. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.92 qualified #5. He faced a low qualifier, Chip Woodall, in the first round, and both ended up smoking the tires. Woodall recovered first, and his 7.15/169 beat Tharp's 7.83/132.54. It was then off to Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. Duane Ong fouled against him in the first round, but Tharp lost in round two. On May 17, the team was at Frontier International for the fourth AHRA Grand American race. The Creitz and Donovan team was one of the eight "seeded" cars on tour, and Tharp's 7.09 qualified #4 among this group. An opening round 7.08/209.79 beat Bob Bofysil's 7.34, but in the second round, his 7.04/216.86 lost to King's 6.97/217. Another win came at Bristol on June 7 for the AHRA Springnationals. Tharp beat Jim Harnsberger in the first round with a 6.90. A second-round 7.07/212.76 stopped a tire-smoking, Chris Karamesines, and he got an easy solo in the semifinal when Jim Nicoll blew his engine on the line. He faced surprise finalist Ed Careccia, and Tharp's 6.76/222.22 easily overtook Ed's off-pace 7.48. He was at Dallas International for the NHRA Springnationals on June 14. He beat Vern Anderson in round one before fouling against Don Moody in round two. Laplace held a Top Fuel vs. Funny Car race on June 21 that saw the FCs get a half-second handicap. The MPH clocks were out for this event. In Richard's first race, he fouled away a 7.05 in a loss to Dick Harrell's 7.69. He also fouled against Tom McEwen in the second race that had Tharp's 7.12 lose to the Duster's 7.41. He won his last race, running a 7.04 to beat Karamesines 'Cuda. The team was back at Dallas International in July for an eight-car show. Tharp's 6.91 qualified #4, and in the first round, his competition, Dale Emery, fouled. He and Eddie Taylor had a good, close race in the semifinals that saw Taylor's 6.88/213 beat his 6.88/218.97. On August 2, the team was at Epping for the AHRA Grand American race. Tharp ran 6.71/222.22 (Top Speed) in the opening round and 6.75/209.75 in round two over Don Cook. In the semifinal, his 6.78/218 lost to eventual winner Jim Nicoll's 6.72. They were at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships the following weekend. Tharp was running strong again, easily winning his first two races. A 6.76/211.26 advanced over Jim Lutz, who broke in the semifinal. He faced Gary Biggins in the final, and Tharp fouled, giving the win to Biggins at 6.98. At the end of August, he was at Bristol for the eighth AHRA Grand American race. In the opening round, he and his opponent, Preston Davis, smoked the tires, but Tharp's 7.70 won over Davis' 8.94. In round his, his 6.76/223.88 fell to Jimmy King's 6.78/223. | Best NHRA national event times were 6.696/217.39. We need to confirm they were in this car (We are not sure what NHRA event he ran the 6.69/217, but it was not Pomona as Low ET there was 6.74, and Tharp failed to qualify. The team did not compete at Indy that had a 6.73 "bump.") |

Notes: Richard was low qualifier at Indy 1979 with a 5.810. "Texas & Tharp: Damnest Things You Ever Saw." | Tharp started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #10. He faced Shirley Muldowney in the first round, and she unleashed Low ET of the meet, a 5.81 to beat Tharp's 6.00. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the "Candies and Hughes" entry barely made the show, running 6.13/241.28 to qualify on the "bump.” An off-pace 6.50/222.22 in the first round, lost to Johnny Abbott's 6.21/234. Things went even worse at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun nationals where the team failed to qualify for the eight-car show. The next stop on the NHRA tour was the Springnationals. Although Richard's 6.07/240.00 only qualified #15, he made it all the way to the final. Tharp beat Larry Dixon with a 6.02/240.64, Steve Stephens with a 6.13/240.64 and Rob Bruins in the semifinals with a 6.22/234.98 to earn the right to face Don Garlits in the final. This was Tharp's first NHRA National event final since the '77 US Nationals. Unfortunately, a 6.51/183.29 was good for the runner-up spot to Don's 6.11/236. Another non-qualifying effort was turned at Denver where they failed to make the eight-car show for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. The team really picked up the pace by the time they rolled into Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.87 qualified them #3 in the field. In round one Tharp's 5.94/247 beat Muldowney's 6.08/242, but in round two his 5.90 was beaten by Garlits' 5.91. It was then off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals in early August. Once again Tharp qualified #3, this time a 5.91/245.90 (Top Speed) got him the spot in the eight-car field. He beat Dixon in the first round, with a 5.90 and a semifinal 5.88 beat Bob Noice in the Brissette and Drake car. This time his final round opponent was Connie Kalitta. Tharp got the win with his 5.86 beating Kalitta's 6.06 for the title. There were over 60 cars attempting to qualify at Indy for the 32 car field at the NHRA US Nationals and Tharp came out on top in qualifying, running a 5.81/248.61 for the #1 spot. He beat Stephens in the first round, and he got to solo in round two when Noice's Donovan lost fire after his burnout. But in the third round a 6.00/245.23 lost to eventual winner Kelly Brown's 5.90/236. The NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle was a race Tharp would probably rather forget. He qualified #14 with a 6.00/243.24 and a quick-leaving 6.01/243.24 in the first round, beat Dave Uyehara's quicker 5.98/233. But in the second round, he faced Hank Johnson. Hank had to shut off on the line with a fuel leak and Tharp was to solo for the round win. Lane choice was important so Richard got on it and the car got out of the groove and off the track where it proceeded to roll several times. Tharp was taken to the hospital and treated for a concussion, but the car was totaled. He drove John Kimble's car at the season finale. In the season long points chase he still finished tenth. |

Notes: Texas & Tharp - Damnedest Things You Ever Seen. One thing for sure, Tharp wasn't scared to put his foot into it until the last mph light. Always a threat for Top Speed of the meet, Tharp qualified #7 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.90/247.93. He ran a first-round 6.01/246.57 over Marvin Graham. Tharp beat Frank Bradley in the second round with a 6.05/243.90 to Frank's 6.12/220. In the semifinals, Connie Kalitta's 5.98/238 beat his 6.11/243.90. They went to Gainesville for the Gatornationals and didn't qualify well (#11), but he still made it to the semifinals after beating Shirley Muldowney in round two. He then lost to Gary Beck. Richard grabbed a big win the following week (March 23) at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.20 and beat Jeb Allen in the first round, in a close 6.02/243.24 to Allen's 6.03/238. In the semifinals, Dick LaHaie broke, giving Tharp an easy (?) 6.06/243.90 (Top Speed) run into the final to face Connie Kalitta. Both had run bests of 6.02 at the event, so it was anticipated to be close. Unfortunately for Kalitta, he smoked the tires and lost with a 7.25/132 while Tharp motored to a 6.05/243.90 win. On March 30, NHRA held its second Division 4 race at Green Valley. Tharp qualified #1 with a 6.18 and set Top Speed at 238.72, but he lost in the semifinals to Beck's 6.39/222 with a close 6.41/234.98. The team was headed to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships but never made it as their transporter broke down. Beck stopped him again on April 27 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Tharp qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 5.98/245.90, but a first-round 6.05 lost to Gary's 6.04. He took another first-round loss at the Divisional race at Gulfport International, where his 6.11/234.98 lost to Jeb Allen's 6.09/240. He looked as if he was on the way to a sure victory at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying at 5.82/247.25 and stopped Jeb in the first round, with a 5.91/243 to Allen's 5.95/242. In the semifinal, a 5.95/240 beat Mark Oswald's 6.09/237. In the final, he was to face Bob Hilton in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car, but Tharp lost a rear end, and Hilton soloed for the win. The team then traveled to National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals on June 8 with high expectations. A 5.93/242.58 qualified #1, but in round one, their 6.03 was beaten by Kalitta's 5.97. It was a bitter disappointment for the team, especially since they ran so well. On June 28, they were at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Tharp beat Don Garlits in the first round of the eight-car show with a 6.13/240.00 (Top Speed). Jerry Ruth stole their thunder in the semifinals, running a track record 5.98/231 over Tharp's 6.06/235.60. Another #1 qualifying position came at the NHRA Summernationals. This time, a 5.85/245.90 got the spot. A first-round 5.90/243.90 beat Bradley's 5.98/233, but Tharp lost to Dick LaHaie in the second round, despite setting Top Speed at 246.57 trying to catch him. The following week (July 20) found the team a Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Tharp qualified #4 with a 5.96 and improved to a 5.82/243.90 in the first round while beating Hilton. In the semifinals, he slowed to a 6.07 and lost to Oswald's 5.94/245. On August 3, it all came together at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. They qualified #1 with a 5.87/240.64 (nobody else was in the fives), set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.86/247.25, beating Kalitta, and in the semifinals, set Top Speed with a 5.92/247.93 pass that took out Hilton's 5.98/236. In the final, Richard met Jeb Allen and beat him with a 5.91/247.25 to Jeb's 6.20/237. The 247.93 was a new IHRA speed record. The team bypassed the NHRA Grandnationals event in Canada. At the US Nationals, a 5.85/237.46 qualified #4, and in round one, his 6.02/244.56 defeated Neil Mahr's 6.43/223. But in round two, the car smoked the tires hard, and he lost to Kalitta. Notes: Photo from Indy 1981. | Tharp started the '81 season by qualifying #13 with a 5.97/236.84 at the NHRA Winternationals. Despite the relatively poor starting position, Richard picked up to a first-round 5.78 (Low ET) at 245 over Gary Cornwall's 5.92/238. A second round 5.83/243 beat low qualifier Jerry Ruth's 5.95/240. Tharp slipped to a 6.03 in the semifinal that lost to Marvin Graham's 5.96. At the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals, on March 15, Richard's 5.82/240.64 qualified #7. A first-round 5.91/243.24 beat Terry Capp, but Jody Smart's 5.87/245 beat his 5.91/243.90 in round two. The following week (March 22), the Candies and Hughes team was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A 6.03/230 qualified #6 in the eight-car field. Tharp picked up to a 5.95/237 in the first round, to beat a wheelstanding Don Garlits. In the semifinal, a 5.97/232 beat Dick LaHaie and in the final, he soloed to the victory when Smart's car broke on the line. Tharp was definitely not happy when their best of 5.97 failed to qualify for the eight-car show in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. On May 17, Tharp was runner-up to Jeb Allen at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.85 and a first-round 6.06 beat alternate Richard Holcomb. He ran another 6.06 in the semifinals to beat Butch Osmon's quicker 6.01 in the Jim and Allison Lee car. But in the final, a tire smoking 11.91/53.41 lost to Allen's 5.99/248. It was strange to see the Candies and Hughes fueler on the bump, but that's where they were at State Capitol Dragway for the NHRA Cajun Nationals on May 24. A 5.97/245.90 got them the #8 spot in the eight-car field. Tharp's 6.01 in the first round, advanced when Gary Beck fouled. But in round two, a tire smoking 6.27/231.36 lost to Allen's 6.02/243. Things were worse at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals when Tharp's best of 6.07/232.55 was good for the fifth alternate. There was a bit of irony in the team's next win. It came at the IHRA Northern Nationals and Tharp beat Mark Oswald for the title. In the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals in July, Richard ran a 5.94/241.28 to qualify #2. Unfortunately, Doug Kerhulas stepped up to a 5.99 in the first round, to beat Tharp's 6.03. The Candies and Hughes team always ran well at the NHRA Summernationals and in '81 they stayed true go qualifying #2 with a 5.76/246.57. A first-round 5.86/246.57 beat Frank Bradley, but in round two, Oswald (that name again) beat Tharp's 5.92/243 with a 5.90/243. Richard was running some big speeds at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. During qualifying, he set Top Speed at 249.30. He beat Connie Kalitta's 6.03/231 in the first round, with a 5.83/247.93. In the semifinals, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires to a 6.05/245.90 loss to Beck's 5.83/236. The team looked like they were on their way to a win at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. A 5.88/242.58 only qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but a first-round 6.04/243.90 beat Kalitta. In the semifinals, Tharp set track records of 5.74/250.00 on a solo pass when Johnny Abbott couldn't show. But in the final, his KB engine threw a blower belt, giving Marvin Graham an easy 7.08 pass for the win. |

Notes: Owners of Rio Airlines. Tharp qualified in the ninth spot at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona with a 5.850 245.09. Richard qualified #5 at the 1983 Gators with a 5.748. He improved to a 5.636 in the second round, but that lost to Gary Beck's amazing 5.492. Photo from '83 Cajun Nationals. There, Tharp was the #5 qualifier but lost to Gary Beck in the first round. The team would go on to win NHRA Columbus and was runner-up at NHRA Atlanta. They were low qualifier/Low ET at NHRA Sanair and low qualifier at NHRA Englishtown. They made it to the semis at Indy and the World Finals but lost to Joe Amato and Shirley Muldowney. The car went to Gene Snow, then to Dan Pastorini. Richard ran 5.608/242.58 at IHRA Bristol Spring. |
