Notes: King was at Fontana on January 2 for the sixteen-car UDRA race. His 8.15/191.48 lost to Nick Marshall's 7.84/195 in the first round. He was at Lions on January 16. Unfortunately, his 7.94/197.36 failed to qualify for the eight-car field's 7.93 "bump." In mid-February, he was at Lions for a sixteen car show. His 7.85/191.08 qualified #4. In the first round, he went into a wheelstand and shut down against Pete Petrie. Shortly after that, he was back at Lions for the UDRA Grandnationals.In the opening round, his tire-smoking 8.41/195.64 beat Tom McEwen who had his magneto go sour. In the second round, his 8.22/198.66 beat Jack Williams; 8.37/193. He lost in the next round. |

Notes: Ken won a Top Fuel show at Oklahoma City on July 5. It was an eight-car show that had 15 cars try to qualify. Raymond Beadle beat Ken in the first round, but hurt his car and could not make it back for the semifinals, so Bernstein got back in on the break rule. In the semis, his 7.40 beat Gary Bailey, and in the final, a 7.16 beat John Wiebe's quicker 7.14 for the win. The next day (July 6), he raced at another eight-car show at Tulsa. He beat Jerry Dawson and Ed Renck on his way to the final. In the final, his 7.31/201.34 lost a close one to Gary Bailey's 7.30/202. In the first round, he raced at the Division 4 race at Dallas on July 20, but lost to Richard Tharp driving Ken's old ride, the Carroll Bros. car. |

Notes: Richard Swecker was an auto mechanic who decided to build a Top Fuel dragster. He built the 130" long chassis and installed a 392 Hemi that was bored out to 398. M/T rods held 6:1 Forgedtrue pistons and Isky was chosen for the cam. An Isky drive also was used and the GMC 6/71 had a Hilborn four-port injector on top. A Schiefer 11" clutch was used. On one of the car's early runs, Swecker ran 7.94/196.54. |
