Notes: Malone took the Top Fuel and Top Eliminator trophies and A/FD class win at the '63 AHRA Nationals. - RT | On February 24, 1963, Art Malone beat Tommy Ivo at San Gabriel for the No. 1 spot on Drag News Top 10. He won the West Coast Championships at Fremont in March. He beat Steve Porter in the opening round with an 8.29/187.88. In round two, his 8.02/189.06 defeated Don Garlits. In the final, he faced Chris Karamesines, and Malone took the win with an 8.26/187.10. A little rundown on what Art was using in '63: a 135-inch wheelbase, 1340-lb car using 16" M&H rubber. The engine was a Hilborn-injected .30-over 392 Hemi that used a Crankshaft Company crank. - RH |

Notes: On July 12, Pete was driving for Gotelli at Fremont. He qualified #3 with a 7.95 and he improved to a 7.76 (Low ET of the meet) at 195.22 in the first round. A semifinal 8.12/189.06 got him into the final where he faced Johnny Batto. Pete got the victory with a 7.93/189.86 when Batto shut off on the line with a leaking fuel line. |

A first-round 8.03/193.54 beat Tim Freeman's 8.07/150 in the first round, while he eased to a round two win when Denny Miliani in the Masters & Richter car had engine troubles. An 8.09/189.96 advanced in the semifinals. He then had an easy solo for the victory when final round opponent Paul Sutherland failed to fire. |

Notes: While the Chrysler Hemi dominated fuel-dragster races, a few teams held out against the Hemi brigade. This team proved that the big-Oldsmobile engine could still compete in TF competition. Kenny drove the car to victory at San Gabriel on June 15. He also set Low ET at 7.97. In an earlier run, he ran 8.04/185.94 over Norm Weekly, and his 8.06/190.26 stopped "Masters & Richter" in the final. Safford was at Pomona on November 17, and while he failed to reach the final, the Olds-powered car ran 8.04/189.46. |
