Notes: Joe qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 4.89/288.18. Another 4.89 at 289.20 in the first round, beat Scott Kalitta's 5.01/279. In the second round, both he and Doug Herbert smoked the tires, but Joe's 7.82/125.56 came out on top. In the semifinal, he met eventual winner Kenny Bernstein. Amato ran a quicker 4.95/283.01, but lost to Kenny's quick-leaving 4.98/282. Still, he left happy as he had just signed a four-year contract renewal with Valvoline. The next event was the Arizona Nationals where a 4.98 qualified #4. He again met up with Scott Kalitta in the first round, and once again beat him with a 4.97/286.25 beating Scott's 5.03. He lost to Herbert in the second round. The third NHRA event of the season was the Supernationals at Houston. Joe qualified #2 with a 4.89/290.51. He made his way into the final where he faced low qualifier Bernstein. In that final round race, Kenny had problems and Amato shot to a 4.91/292.39 for the victory. The Gatornationals was the next race on the calendar and Joe qualified #4 with a 4.90/290.41. Unfortunately, he didn't hang around long, as in the first round, his car broke at half track giving Mike Dunn the win. Things went better at Rockingham for the Winston Invitational in April. There, a 5.01/278.72 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. He beat Cory McClenathan's 5.23/277 in the first round, with a 5.01/284.09. In the semifinals, a 4.98/285.26 beat Herbert's 5.02/279 and moved him into the final against Don Prudhomme. In the final, the "Snake" got a slight advantage off the line and held it for the win with his 4.99/278 beating Joe's better 4.98/284.90. These two would meet again in the final of the next race, the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 4.92 qualified Joe #4 in the field and he worked his way into the final, running a best of 4.87/287 in the semifinals over Ed McCulloch. The final was a repeat of the last race right down to the winner. Prudhomme's 4.96/278 beat Amato's 5.14/224.43. Memphis was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Mid-South Nationals. Joe qualified #5 with a 5.02/285.26, a first-round 5.03/285.26 beat Danielle DePorter, but in round two another 5.03 at 281.86 wasn't enough to beat McClenathan's 5.01/294. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #1 with a 4.97/283.64. In the first round, he beat Tommy Johnson Jr with a 5.07/281.42 while in round two a 5.01/288.27 beat Mike Brotherton. He picked up to a 4.98/288.64 in the semifinals, but he lost to Prudhomme's 4.96/278. The NHRA tour moved to Canada for the Grandnationals where Amato ran 5.03/285.80 to qualify #6. He beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.09/281.42, but in round two, he blew a head gasket and slowed to a 5.23/218.92 that lost to Eddie Hill's 5.04/279. Amato set some interesting stats at the NHRA Summernationals. He ran 4.94/290.88 to qualify #4 and then in the first round, he ran his 100th four second time, a 4.97 at 284.36 to beat Brotherton's 5.01/285. No other Top Fuel driver had more than 44 four-second passes at this time so it was pretty impressive. He got his 10first four second time in round two with a 4.88/288.00 that beat Hill's 5.07/278. He shut off to an 8.14/91.07 in the semifinals when McCulloch fouled against him. In the final, he faced McClenathan and Joe got the victory with a 5.01 with no speed recorded over Cory's 5.18. |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. | Herbert was at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January. Crew Chief Jim Brissette was attempting to set up his clutch combination in Doug's car. The team made five passes, and all were tire-smokers, with the best being an 8.68/94.25. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, the team's first run in qualifying was 5.06. That was followed by losing a blower on the next run, and a blown head gasket on the third attempt slowed Herbert to 5.21. That may have been some good luck as the car in the other lane (Jimmy Nix) suffered a blow-over but was ahead of him on the track. Finally, a 4.97/292.20 qualified #7 for the show. An even better 4.88/292.20 in the first round, beat Ed McCulloch. The 4.880 was the quickest pass in history, surpassing Gary Ormsby's 4.881 for 16 months previous. He had a push rod break in round two and slowed to a 9.12/77.47 that lost to Joe Amato's 7.82/125. He qualified #5 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 4.99. A first-round 5.10/275.73 beat Bobby Baldwin, and in round two, a 5.01/269.13 beat Amato. He got into the final by stopping Gene Snow in the semifinals with a 5.17/263.31, but facing off against Pat Austin in the final, he limped to a 16.61/77.23 runner-up finish due to a broken throttle cable to Austin's 5.06/286. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, he qualified #13 with a 5.01/284.81. In the first round, his 5.02/279.93 lost to Cory McClenathan's 4.92/291. His next event was the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. Doug set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.26/272.80. In round one of the eight-car show, he beat a tire-smoking Wayne Bailey with a 5.35/271.16. In the semifinals, he ran another 5.35 at 268.41 to advance when Gene Snow broke. But in the final, Doug had problems and slowed to a 6.30/179.92 that lost to John Carey's 5.63/239. The following week (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Doug qualified #7 with a 4.94/283.73. In the first round, Herbert ran a career-best (to this point) 4.87 at 289, but he wasted it with a red light losing to Pat Austin, who had broken on the line. The next event was NHRA's Winston Invitational at Rockingham. It was only an eight-car field, and qualifying was tough. Doug got in on the "bump" spot with a 5.07/282.75. He improved to a 5.04/279.76 in the first round, to stop Eddie Hill's 5.11/286, and he ran even quicker in the semifinals with a 5.02/279.34, but it wasn't quick enough as he lost to Amato's 4.98/285. Race number five of NHRA's regular season was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 4.98/282.22 qualified Doug #6 for the show. In round one, he beat Tommy Johnson Jr's 5.11/283 with a 4.92/283.55. But in round two, Cory McClenathan pulled a slight holeshot, and his 4.99/290 beat Herbert's quicker 4.97/285.44. He grabbed a big win at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. A 5.25/277.34 qualified #1 in the eight-car field, and in round one, he improved to 5.16/275.81 to beat Mike Smith. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 5.03 (track record) at 283.64 thrashing of Jack Ostrander. In the final, he faced Kim LaHaie. Despite her running a great 5.16/270, Doug got the victory with another 5.03 at 283.55. It was back to NHRA for the Mid-South Nationals, where he qualified #9 for the show with a 5.06/287.17. But in round one, a 4.96/284 by Don Prudhomme beat his 5.02/289.66. Mid-June found Doug at the NHRA Springnationals, where he ran 5.03/283.55 to qualify #6. Once again, he lost early; this time, Connie Kalitta's 4.98/279 beat his 5.02/283.82 in the first round. Two first-round losses in a round were not to Herbert's liking, and he followed it up by going to Canada for the IHRA Summernationals. A 5.05 (Low ET) at 281.95 qualified #1, and he made his way to the final by running 5.15/283.28 (Top Speed) over Lori Johns' quicker 5.10/272 and 5.08/281.69 in the semifinals to beat a tire-smoking, Robert Reehl. In the final, he faced Mike Smith, and both had traction issues with Smith's 5.89/261 getting the victory over Doug's 6.10/246.50. While still in Canada, he went to Sanair the following week (June 28) for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #8 with a 5.09/284.62, but he was not a happy camper as in the first round, he lost to Al Segrini in Billy Lynch's car. That made it three first-round losses in the last three NHRA events. He grabbed another IHRA win at the Empire Nationals on July 5. A 5.19/281.25 (Top Speed) qualified #1. He then ran 5.20/275.73 to beat Smith, and in the semifinals, his 5.21/279.06 took out Kim LaHaie. In the final, he faced Hill's Pennzoil dragster. Doug took the win with a Low ET blast of 5.15 at 279.67 over Eddie's 5.23/269. |

Notes: Ed McCulloch was a strong runner in '92. It didn't start so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals when he qualified #10 with a 5.02/288.36 and lost to Doug Herbert in the first round. It still didn't look so go when the team exploded two superchargers at the NHRA Arizona Nationals. Ed finally qualified #8 with a 5.05/285.80, but they lost another supercharger (the third) and the race to Gene Snow in the first round. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. McCulloch ran 4.94/291.73 to qualify #6. But in the first round, Bobby Baldwin stepped up to a 4.88/286 to beat Ed's 4.96/287.44. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the team barely qualified, running a 5.03/274.05 for the #15 spot. Once again, he lost in the first round; this time, Eddie Hill got him with a 4.89/293 to Ed's 4.92/290.41. Rockingham hosted the NHRA Winston Invitational in April. It was an eight-car show, and Ed ran 5.05/279.15 to qualify #6. Both he and Kenny Bernstein smoked the tires in the first round, but the "Ace's" 5.46/265.01 came out on top. He ran his best time at the meet in the semifinals, a 5.02/284.36, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 4.96/280. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Ed's 5.01/286.60 qualified #9 for the show, and in round one, he improved to 4.94/289.38 to stop Connie Kalitta from advancing. A second-round 4.98/285.80 beat Bernstein's 5.01/294, but in the semifinals, his 4.99/286.16 lost to Joe Amato's 4.87/287. At Memphis, for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, a 5.03/287.53 qualified #7. A first-round 5.09/284.36 beat Jim Head's 5.23/273, but in round two, his 5.11/281.69 lost to Bernstein's 4.96/295. |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. | Pat debuted his new McKinney-built car at the NHRA Gatornationals. It replaced his six-year-old Don Long-built car. Although he failed to qualify, the car ran OK for the first time out, hitting a 5.02/285.17 best that was the fourth alternate for the show. He was still having new car blues at the NHRA Southern Nationals and could not qualify, only running a best of 10.67/79.78. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Dakin had Tom Kattleman turning the wrenches, and he qualified #7 with a 4.89/277.43. In the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Pat Austin. |

Notes: Garth came back out in 1999 with a big show top fuel car. He qualified #15 at Bandimere at 5.100/281.19, and improved to 4.936/290.38 in a first round loss to Doug Kalitta (4.70/299). At Sonoma, he qualified #16 at 4.835/276.13. In round one, he ran 4.873/297.88 but lost to Bob Vandergriff (4.63/314). Garth was the seventh alternate at his final race, the Pomona World Finals. There, he ran 5.029/286.80. |
