Notes: Photo from Indy 1990. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. | Started the season by qualifying #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.07/277.77. He improved to 5.01/279.24 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Joe Amato's 4.89/289. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 5.14/280.54 qualified #13, but once again Amato got him in round one, and Joe's 4.97/286 beat Scott's 5.03/279.24. Kalitta really improved at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals where he qualified #3 with a 4.89/285.89. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to his dad, Connie Kalitta. He got his first NHRA round win of the year at the NHRA Gatornationals. There he qualified #6 with a 4.93/280.72 and in round one, his 4.99/279.24 beat Gene Snow. In the second round, Kim LaHaie pulled a slight holeshot and her 5.01/278 beat Scott's 5.00/274.05. He did not compete at the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There he qualified #10 with a 5.04/269.13, but in round one, he lost a blower on the line advancing eventual winner Don Prudhomme. Scott had a less than memorable experience at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He had an engine blow while attempting to qualify and parts of the engine blew out a rear slick. The dragster became a fireball, but Kalitta brought it to a stop. He was OK and after they put the fire out he repaired the car for eliminations. An earlier run of 5.14/276.32 qualified the car on the "bump spot" for the show. After all that work he faced off against Eddie Hill in the first round, and both smoked the tires, but Hill won with a 5.73 over Kalitta's shut off 13.09. |

Notes: Gary was the second alternate at Somona at 5.262/276.24 and the first alternate at Seattle at 5.135/239.38. Gary qualified #8 at Topeka at 4.989/280.72 (the first time the McGee motor entered the fours). He lost to #9 qualifier Doug Herbert in round one, 4.907/298.01, to a shut-off 9.598/77.61. Gary also qualified #8 at the Pomona Finals at 4.949/275.90. He won a close first-round race over Shelly Anderson, 5.004/285.89 to 5.054/285.89. Eddie Hill ended Gary's day in round two, 4.852/291.07 to a consistent but losing 5.009/274.30. Gary also was said to run 5.04/270 in Joe Amato's car this year. |

Notes: Hill was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 5.12/271.16 to qualify #11. In the opening round, his 5.18/271.98 fell to eventual winner Lori Johns' 5.04/265. He also qualified #11 at Firebird Raceway for the Arizona Nationals with a 5.07/271.24. He fouled against Darrell Gwynn in the first round and slowed to a 5.39/259.59 loss. Houston was the next stop for the NHRA Supernationals, and for the third straight time, he qualified #11. A 5.07/264.08 got him the spot. A 5.21/262.85 got around Kenny Bernstein in the opening round, and in round two, his 7.35/157.92 was enough to beat Johns' who had broken a clutch. Eddie tried hard in the semifinal, but his 5.07/271.32 lost to Dick LaHaie's 4.97/278. Things went pretty well for Hill at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He reached his first final round in ten months despite qualifying #14 with a 5.21/270.51. In the first round, he survived a tire smoker with Joe Amato that had his 5.98/256.19 beat Amato's 6.24/203. In the second round, a 5.11/272.31 stopped Ken Koretsky's 5.42/262. In the semifinals, Gary Ormsby's 5.17/278 fell to his 5.12/274.47. He faced Gwynn in the final, and Darrell was tough as he set Low ET at 4.98. A time he ran twice. Still, Fuzzy Carter tuned Hill to his best run of the weekend in the final, a 5.08/275.56. It still wasn't enough to beat Gwynn's 5.01/279, but it was a good showing for the team. He did not run at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was back on tour at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 5.10/274.13 qualified #10. In round one, a troubled 8.98/58.50 lost to Ormsby's 5.07/279. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. A 5.05 got him into the #4 spot. He beat Tommy Johnson Jr. in round one before losing to Bernstein in round two. He duplicated his starting position at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 5.08/271.98. He beat Don Prudhomme in the first round, and a 5.23/257 beat Bernstein's 5.24/271 in a very close second-round match. But in the semifinal, his 5.22/261 lost to Gene Snow's 5.10/258. Hill got one of his best starting positions of the year at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 5.09/267.85 qualified #3. Unfortunately, a 6.48/250.27 lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.26/268 in the first round, even with the great starting position. Eddie and his team followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. His 5.22/268.25 qualified #10. He beat Bernstein in round one before smoking the tires in round two and losing to the race's eventual winner Ormsby in round two. Back in the US at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, the team was unhappy. Hill wrecked two JP-1 engines while attempting to qualify. He finally got a 5.21/273.30 run-in to qualify #15. But the weekend ended miserably as an off pace 5.77/258.62 lost of Ormsby's 5.12/280 in the opening round. Another first-round loss followed at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Eddie qualified #12 with a 5.52/253.37 but his 5.63/247.93 lost to Bernstein's 5.44/260. Sonoma was the next stop on the NHRA schedule, and Hill qualified #6 with a 5.11/275.73. He beat Muldowney in the opening round with a 5.28/270.67. In round two, the eventual winner, Ormsby, ran 5.11/286 to trailer Hill's 5.20/265.72. A week later (August 5), the teams were at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals, where Eddie qualified #11. His 5.19/270.10 beat Bernstein in the opening round but once again, Ormsby had his number in the second round, and Hill's 5.16/273.05 fell to Gary's 5.04/284. That was a better performance than he had at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, where a 5.14/265.64 qualified #9 and a 5.44/264.31 in round one lost to Frank Hawley's 5.12/271. Eddie really found something at NHRA Maple Grove, hitting an amazing 4.945/285.71 in a round one win. Those were his best times of the year. |

Notes: Kenny took his first ride in a Top Fuel car in Jan at Firebird Raceway's test and tune event. He had famed crew chief Mike Garrison tuning the car. The car was the former Al Hanna car that had only been run in two events before Koretsky bought it. He arrived late at Firebird and only got in two runs. A 7.25/108.74 and an up in smoke shut-off run. He attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was the first alternate with a best of 5.18/267.61. He managed to qualify #15 at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.27/267.30. In the opening round, both he and his opponent, Lori Johns, broke, and Koretsky won the coasting contest with an 8.91/85.30 to her 11.44/89. Things didn't go too well in round two, where he lost an engine and the race to Gary Ormsby. The engine blew in the lights, and the fire burned off the parachute. He went into the sand trap at the end of the track and had to be taken to the hospital with a cracked vertebra. Ever the trooper, he showed up at Houston in the first week of March for the NHRA Supernationals. His 5.07/281.33 qualified #12. In the first round, his 5.19/273.22 lost to Joe Amato's 5.08/276. Koretsky continued to impress at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 5.19/274.13 qualified #11 in a race that even Shirley Muldowney failed to qualify for. In round one, his 5.30/230.29 beat Mike Brotherton's 5.72/231. He slowed even more in round two, where his 5.42/262.08 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.11/272. Notes: Tommy was the fourteenth member of the Cragar 4-Second Club on September 29, 1990, with the 4.964 at Topeka. Tommy started the season at Pomona, failing to qualify (10.37/79.71). At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.04/275.48 cracked the top half of the field (#7). Unfortunately, a tire-smoking 9.01/90.27 in the opening round lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.07/278. He was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where his 5.03/283.73 qualified #10. Both he and his first-round opponent, Shirley Muldowney, smoked the tires but Johnson's 6.01/267.93 crossed the finish line first in front of Shirley's 6.59/207. In the second round, his 5.38/211.41 fell to eventual winner Dick LaHaie's 4.96/279. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the Gatornationals held in mid-March. Tommy "only" qualified #13 with a 5.20/273.55. In the first round, he stepped up to a career-best 5.01/284.81, but he lost to a holeshot-aided 5.06/277 from LaHaie.
