Notes: Photo from the 1977 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. The new year didn't start the best for Warren. He was at Irwindale's New Year's Day race for a best of three match race against Shirley Muldowney. Unfortunately, he lost three straight to the lady. He ran 6.28/210.28 at PRO Beeline, Arizona, but we don’t have anything, but Friday qualifying results from that race. James went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #7 at 6.002 and he beat Rick Ramsey in the first round. The car came up ailing in the second round and he lost to eventual winner Jerry Ruth. James then went on to Sacramento where he won the Race of Champions event. Another win came at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. The Warren and Coburn team always ran well here and '77 was no exception. James qualified #1 for the 32-car field with a 5.77. In round two, he set a track record 5.75. In the final, he faced "Big Daddy" Don Garlits and on this day, there was no denying Warren as his 5.83 buried Garlits' 6.09 for the title. Things didn't go nearly as well the following week at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There he qualified #4 which was pretty good, but in the first round, against Grant Stoms (who he had covered), he pulled his 'chute early and Stoms came roaring past for the win, 6.26 to 6.28. On March 27, he won the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Fremont. Warren set Low ET at 5.90 and in the final, a 6.04/199.55 took the victory over Denver Schutz. The team was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. James qualified #5 in the eight-car field, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Richard Tharp who was driving for "Candies and Hughes.” In their race, Warren had linkage problems and Tharp went on to win the event. At the next NHRA event, the Springnationals at Columbus, things went even worse as the team failed to qualify for the sixteen-car show. It was then off to Sacramento for the third NHRA Division 7 race. A 6.14 qualified #5 for the eight-car field, meaning he would have to run low qualifier Dennis Baca in round one. Baca set Low ET of the meet in their race with a 5.93/237 while Warren got sent to the trailer with a 6.31/186.34. At the fourth NHRA Division 7 race held at Bonneville, a 6.34 qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field. A 6.37/213.69 covered Shorty Leventon in the first round, but he lost soon after. Best NHRA National event times were 6.002 at Pomona and 241.28 at Indy on 9/04/77.

Notes: Shiroma was at Irwindale on August 16 for the final NHRA Division Seven race. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.29 qualified #8. Another 6.29/221.67 beat Mike Reynolds in the first round, while in round two, his 6.43/206.70 defeated Jim Plummer's 6.49/199. Stan then lost to Rod Dunne in the semifinal. He won the NHRA Fallnationals in the first all Chevy final (against Rance McDaniel). Comp number changed from 7772 to 718 in 1977. Stan holds the last Irwindale ET record at 5.84. Best NHRA National event times were 6.002/240.00 in qualifying at Seattle, which he won. Stan did not qualify at the Winters, but we don't see the team running at any other NHRA national event this year.

Notes: Photo from the 1977 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Lots of 5.80s in winning the Ontario World Finals. Qualified at Ontario at 5.971/238.72. Ran 5.93 at Sacramento. | Dennis was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.97/247.93 and in round one, his 6.07 beat Jim Plummer. A round two 6.00/233.16 took out Bruce Walker, but in the semifinals, his 6.13/239.36 lost to Garlits' 6.08/242. He also made it into the semifinals at the Bakersfield March Meet. Once again, it was Garlits who stopped him. Dennis won NHRA Indy and the World Finals. Confirmed 5.845 at NHRA Ontario. Did Dennis run 5.81 somewhere this year?

Notes: Photo from 1969 World Finals, Dallas, Tex. Confirmed 6.629/221.67 from NHRA US Nationals 9/69. | John was at Lions on February 9 for an eight-car show, but he had problems and his best of 7.79 failed to qualify. Wiebe won a sixteen-car show at Continental Divide Raceway on April 13. He ran 7.54 and 7.51 in the first two rounds before stepping it up to a 7.47 (Low ET) at 191.88 over Joe McKee's 7.66/183 in the semifinal. In the final he copped Top Speed of the meet as well with a 7.62/213.28 beating Doc Halladay's 7.89/207. Another win came at the Division 5 opener at Omaha Dragway on May 4, where he set Low ET in the first round, at 7.16 on his way to the final where a 7.22/198.22 beat Bud Dabler. Another win came at the AHRA Southern Nationals in Memphis on May 31. A final 6.95/221.46 won him that title. He qualified seventh at the NHRA Springnationals at Dallas with a 6.80/231.36 (Top Speed). He beat Tom McEwen in round one, with a 6.90/225.56, but he fouled against George Cox in round two. It was back into the winner's circle the following week on June 21 at Donnybrooke Speedway for the Division 5 race. Halladay fouled against him in the first round, and John ran an easy 7.39/163.93. In the semifinal, a 7.03/218.54 (Top Speed) beat Bob Stuart who got crossed up. He ran a single at 6.90/218.46 for the win when Norm Gingrass had blown his motor while winning his semifinal race and was unable to repair in time for the final. 15 cars showed up for the eight available positions at Oklahoma City on July 5. Wiebe not only qualified, but he made it into the final. A first-round 7.12 beat Jimmy Nix and another 7.12/201.34 beat Larry Brown in the semifinals. In the final, Wiebe's 7.14/221.12 lost to upstart Kenny Bernstein's slower 7.16 in Prentiss Cunningham's car. He suffered a rare first-round loss on July 13 at the fourth Division 5 race at Thunder Road Dragway in Denver. Mike Snively's 7.20/207 beat John's 7.35/198.66.

Notes: Earl qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.73/247.93. A 6.03 advanced past the first round when Dan Pastorini fouled. Unfortunately, he broke against Joe Amato in the second round. He did well at Gainesville, qualifying #12 with a 5.61/223.88. That was pretty good, considering 27 cars were attempting to qualify for the NHRA Gatornationals sixteen-car field. In the first round, Whiting slowed to a 5.91/209.30, losing to Dick LaHaie's 5.54/254. At the Bakersfield Meet in May, Earl ran 5.65/252.80 to qualify #4 in the eight-car show. He lost his engine on a 5.91/226 single in the first round when Ralph Pearson broke. Earl could not make it to the line to face Pastorini in the semifinals. Photo from Arizona 1987. Earl ran his best times at Ennis. Earl qualified #12 at the world finals at 5.607/254.38. He lost to Shirley Muldowney in round one. Photo from 1987.

Notes: ACI chassis was Dave Settles. | Gene started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #2 with a 6.35. He worked his way into the finals, where he met with Don Garlits. Gene ran a strong 6.12 but lost to Garlits' 6.08 Low ET of the meet run. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 5.823 247.93 to qualify #6. He had a bit of bad luck, good luck (?) in the first round, when he broke a rear end, but won when Richard Tharp fouled. In the second round, he lost to Jody Smart. Best NHRA times at Indy, 5.629/252.10.

Notes: First in the 8's. Set NHRA speed record at Lions Drag Strip at 166.97 on February 3, 1957. Also ran 159 and 165.13 on the same day, smashing the existing 157 mph record. This incredible speed (with an unblown, carbureted engine) caused organization officials to freak out and institute the nitro ban. Photo from Don Garlits' museum in Ocala, Florida. Cook was at Famoso on April 7, where he ran a track record 8.89. He also had Top Speed of the day at 163.35. | Cook and Bedwell 1957 - February 2 - day of the big runs, in order - 9.880/159.01 tied current world record, 2nd pass - 9.800/165.13 - the was the final. He just ran the fastest speed in history by six mph. MT asked him to stick around and make another run - then made a single after the final - 10.020/166.97! Then went to Bakersfield on April 7 - 163.35 at 8.890 - then on May 5, he went to Colton and went 168.85 on a 9.450 pass. He and two or three other cars were shipped to Hawaii in 1957 to run at Kahuku Air Base - the big drag strip in Hawaii. He ran over 160 there! Four days - July 4 through July 7, 1957 - Thursday through Sunday - 1st annual Hawaii summer Invitational drag racing championships. Cook first run-on Thursday 9.19/157.89 in front of 4000 people on Thursday. Richer in Nesbit Car 9.49/153.84, Cortopassi class 9.84/142.38, then local guys - Longie Gandall 10.33/136, local guy. Second day - Bruce Geisler - sports car day two - Fred Watanabe - motorcycle - promoter Jimmy Sujiyama - Cook then ran Friday and Saturday but not faster than they had - Cook - 166.96 Sunday July 7 - 9.89 to win top eliminator honors! 3000 fans. - Bret Kepner

Notes: Chris qualified #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals at 6.832/216.34. He had a wing over the engine (front engine and a separate entry?) He won round one over Paul Schoenfield, 7.53/203.16 to 8.09, but Kenny Safford got to him in round two, 6.91/212.76 to 7.29/214.79. That was the Greek's last NHRA national event in Top Fuel, but he ran his funny car at the Gatornationals. Chris also ran 6.595 at Long Beach and 206.89. | The original rectangular Milodon decal before the bowed shape. I remember the Milodon ads (and T-shirts at the track) in the Lions-era Drag News, with a hand holding a full-stack '92. The first Howard's Cams decal with the cursive writing across the gear was the best one. - Joe Moore

Notes: Rob went to semis at Indy 1978, running a best of 5.882/239 in eliminations. Qualified at 78 Winters at 6.010/238.09. Won NHRA Ontario Finals over Gary Beck. Ran 240 plus several times, but the credited 247.58 at Ontario was probably 242.58 (the only valid 247 runs were 247.25 and 247.93). He did run a legit 245.23 at Seattle. We need to confirm those numbers.

Notes: Gary debuted the "Thrush Muffler" car in May at the NHRA Division 6 race in Seattle. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.13, and he beat James Warren and Larry Kleinbrook in the first two rounds before losing to eventual winner Herm Petersen's 6.23/234 with an off-pace 7.71/122. He won the Division 1 race at Cayuga, and shortly after that, he won the third Division 3 race at Blaney. The car made its first national event showing at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Gary was having a rough time making the field, as it took five attempts before his 6.23 qualified him #12 for the show. It was a little embarrassing when, in the first round, his 6.65 lost to Graham Light's 6.24. Light was driving Beck's old car. Things didn't go much better at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Beck qualified #12, and in the opening round, his 6.14/227.84 beat John Wiebe's 6.14/234. But in round two, his off-pace 6.66/161.29 was lost to Jeb Allen's 6.13/227. A week later (July 17), he was in Seattle for the first race of the PDA Championships. He didn't reach the final but set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.99/238.09. At the second PDA race run at Fremont on July 24, he failed to reach the finals again, but he had a Top Speed at 243.93. He showed them at the last PDA race held at OCIR. He qualified #3 for the 32 car show with a 6.15 at only 212.76, but it was a long way back from Don Garlits, who qualified #1 with a 5.90/241. A first-round 6.17/218 beat Larry Dixon, and in round two, Gary's 6.16/233 took out Mike Reynolds. In round three, he really stepped it up, running 5.84/241.93 to beat Rob Bruins' 6.11/227. That set up a semifinal meeting with Garlits, who had run 5.82/245 in his third-round race. Beck cut a great light and made this race worth the cost of admission. His 5.89/236.22 beat "Big Daddy's" better 5.83/244. Beck went on to win by beating Ken Moitoza in a smoke-filled final. Gary's final round numbers were 6.43/226.70. He was in Canada the following week (August 8) for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another excellent outing for the team. He qualified #2 with a 6.02/233.76 behind Richard Tharp's 6.02/236 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. It was these two who would meet for the money. Beck started eliminations with a 6.38 over Frank Bradley, and in round two, his 6.14/241.93 beat Tom Kaiser. He got the odd-lot solo in the semifinals and ran 5.96/224.43. Tharp was also putting down some numbers. He had run 6.01, 5.98, and a semifinal 5.97. It was anyone's race in the final, but Beck made his fellow Canadians happy by setting a track record 5.81 at 243.24 (Top Speed) to get the win over Tharp's 6.08/199. Garlits got payback on Beck at the PHR Championships. Don qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field, and Gary's 6.12 got him the #9 spot in the show. This meant that the two ran each other in the first round. Garlits ran 5.88/238 to put the "Thrushmobile's" 6.18/216.86 on the trailer. Beck then went to Beech Bend for the final NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified #1 with a track record 5.90 at 224.43 and in the final Mike Palmer broke so Gary's 5.99/215.82 picked up the win.
