Notes: Goldstein was at Riverside on March 20 for a Jackpot Circuit race. In the opening round, his 7.80/202.70 defeated Ron Matin's 7.96/169. In the semi-final, he fell off to 8.52/196.92 in a loss to Tommy Allen's 7.79/199. The following week (March 26), Leroy qualified #3 a for a sixteen-car show at Lions. In the first round, he nipped James Warren's 7.87/205 with a 7.86/206.88. He then lost in round two. He was back at Lions on April 18 but failed to qualify for the eight-car show. After qualifying ended with a 7.87 bump, Leroy ran a 7.72/196.06, which would have put him in the middle of the field. On May 7, he was back at Lions for another eight-car show. This time, he just made the show with a 7.89/196.97, good for #8. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 7.50/201.78 that lost to James Warren's 7.63/202. The next day, the Jackpot circuit race found the Crower-Blair team at Carlsbad. Leroy fouled against Bill Leavitt in the first round. On May 21, Lions held one of its weekly eight-car shows. Leroy qualified second with a 7.59, and a second 7.59/207.84 lost to Jeff Bliley's 7.82/196. Goldstein was at Irwindale on June 11 for an eight-car show. Although his 7.71 would have easily qualified, he damaged the engine on the run and could not run eliminations. He was at Carlsbad on June 17 but failed to win and the next day (June 18) found the team at Irwindale where a first-round 7.95/200.00 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.60/193. At the HRM Championships at Riverside on June 19, a 7.70/203.16 qualified #21 in the 32-car field. In the first round, he showed his driving talent when his 7.77/200.88 beat Dave Beebe's much quicker 7.52/213. On July 2, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show where he qualified with a 7.68. Unfortunately, he shut off with no oil pressure in the first round. The next day (July 3), he went to San Fernando for another eight-car show. He qualified #3 with a 7.95/197.80 and, in round one, a 7.91/169 beat John Martin. In the semifinals, his 7.92 lost to James Warren's 7.68. Irwindale held an eight-car show on August 20, and Leroy qualified #2 with a 7.73. He won his first-round race with a 7.74/207.84. In the semifinal, a 7.80/196.92 beat Steve Porter's ailing 8.35. He lost to Dwight Salisbury in the final. On August 26, he was a Carlsbad for an eight-car show. He advanced past the first round with a 7.80/203.16, but in the semifinal, Allen's 7.53/190 beat his 7.78/202.24. He was runner-up to Allen at a Jackpot Pro Circuit race at Carlsbad on September 5. His quicker 7.71/210.76 lost to Tommy Allen's 7.76/208 in the final. On September 16, he won an eight-car show at Carlsbad. He beat Jack Jones in the first round, and in the semifinals, Ongais fouled against him. In the final, he got another gift when Allen also fouled. Goldstein ran 7.42/204 for the win. Leroy got himself another big win on September 25 when he won the Fremont Fall Championships. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 7.17 over Gene Winther, and in the final, he ran a 7.65/215.82 (Top Speed) for the victory. On October 8 at Irwindale, Leroy qualified second with a 7.50. He made it to the final against Larry Faust but broke on the line giving Larry a solo (7.78/168.53) for the win. A week later (October 15), he returned to Irwindale for another eight-car show. He didn't do as well when he lost to Beebe in the first round. He went to Carlsbad the next day and won. In the first round, a track record 7.27 at 214.78 beat Dominic Cardoza while he ran an easy single in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Cardoza again, who had gotten back in on the "break rule." Once again, Leroy won, running 7.37/214.28 for the victory. Goldstein advanced past the first round at the Irwindale Grand Prix race with a 7.49/187.10 when Herb Ries lost fire. In the second round, his 7.77/149.50 lost to Tommy Dyer's 7.72/202. |

Notes: Stutz's season didn't start so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He had already qualified #12 with a 5.52/258.84. He came back out to try to improve his time. On the run, his parachute release broke, and he was carrying too much speed when he attempted to turn at the turn-off road. The car flipped into the concrete barrier. He was ok, but the car was too damaged to race. The Gunite Express team practically assembled a new car in the pits at Gainesville. The new chassis was an Former Jimmy King car, and it was put together over Thursday and Friday. Donnie Couch tuned the car to a 5.47/253.95 to qualify #9 for the NHRA Gatornationals field. In the opening round of competition, Ray shut off to an 8.54/98.33 that lost to Darrell Gwynn's tire-smoking 5.91/190. He also attempted to qualify for the eight-car field at the NHRA Winston All-Star race. Unfortunately, his 5.48/220.40 best was the first alternate. Atlanta was the team's next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was not a good outing, and a 6.35/164.10 best failed to qualify. The team rebounded at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.71/254.66 qualified #12, and it sure must have made Stutz and Couch happy. But in round one, an off-pace 7.05/129.85 lost to Don Garlits' 5.55/261. Ray was at the Texas Motorplex on June 6 for a four-car race. In his first race, his 5.85/242.39 lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.81/204, and in his second race, he ran 5.56/260.64 to beat Gary Ormsby's 5.75/258. The team did not go to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals or Canada's NHRA Grandnationals. They were also a no-show at the NHRA Summernationals but returned to the NHRA tour at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but his 6.35/221.45 was good for the fourth alternate. Ray was back at the Motorplex on October 4 for the NHRA Chief Nationals, where he was the second alternate with a 5.73/243.83 best. He ended the season at Pomona for the NHRA World Finals, where he ran career bests (to this point) of 5.283/270.75 to qualify #8. Photo from 1987 NHRA Gatornationals Gainesville, FL. Ray's best qualified NHRA times in 1987 were 5.283/270.75 at the Pomona Finals. Was the 5.172/275.22 run at an IHRA event? |

Notes: Cook had one of the best top-ending cars in '68. He started his season at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car field, and in round one, his 7.39/213.28 defeated Neil Leffler's 7.53/208 in Joe Winters's car. His 7.33 lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 7.24 in Lou Baney's Ford in round two. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.89/221.12 qualified #1. His 7.30/221.12 won his opening race, but he fouled away a 6.97/223.32 against Dwight Salisbury in the next round. On February 13, Cook was in Las Vegas for the Stardust National Open. A 7.26 qualified #6, but he lost to "Sneaky Pete" Robinson in the opening round. After that, he went to OCIR for its PDA Championships but failed to make it into the later rounds. He won an eight-car show at Lions on April 13. A 7.00/226.12 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. A first-round 7.07/225.00 beat Frank Martinez, and in the semifinal, a 7.08/222.76 beat Dave Beebe. In the final, Don ran a 7.55/220.58 for the win over Ray Ayres. Another win came on May 11 at the Pro-Circuit race at Green Valley. He qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 7.72/214.24. Ron Manke fouled against him in the first round, and Cook advanced with a 7.15/217.90 (Top Speed and a new track record). Bennie Osborn fouled against him in the semifinals, and Don shut off to 8.80/140.95. In the final, he faced Vic Brown driving the "Creitz and Greer" car. Vic had problems and shut off while Cook blew his clutch and slowed to 7.89, but it was enough for the victory. The following day, he was at Tulsa for another Pro-Fuel Circuit race. Thirty-four cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Cook qualified and then beat George Rodriquez in the first round. The "Carroll Brothers" car driven by Gary Bailey lost fire in round two, and Don advanced. He faced Osborn in the semifinals, and Bennie's 7.35 lost to Cook's 7.25. Once again, he faced Brown in the final. This time, Vic beat him for the win. He competed at the AHRA Springnationals at Bristol, where he had a very interesting semifinal race with Brown. Vic had fouled, and Don just had to make an easy pass to reach the final, but he crossed the centerline during his run and was disqualified. Don was at Lakeland for a best two out of three match race against Preston Davis on June 16. The "Southwind" won its first race with a 7.42/229.30 over Preston's 7.54/207 in the "Bo-Weevil." Davis evened the score in the second race with a 7.34/208 solo when Cook could not repair his car in time. Cook proved that the 229 was no fluke by running a 7.27/227 to win the race. We needless to say, the 229.30 was a track record. On August 4, Cook competed at Castle Rock for the High Altitude Nationals. It was a 32-car field, and in the opening round, his 7.25/212.26 beat Otis Campbell. In the second round, his 7.24/210.28 defeated Harold Wilson. The car lost fire for its run against Earl Binns in round three. Shortly after that (August 18), he was at New York National for the AHRA Nationals. Cook showed just what kind of fierce competitor he was there. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the second round, he had his engine blow while winning. In forty minutes, he and his crew pulled the engine out of Leroy Goldstein's "Wienerschnitzel" and installed it in Cook's chassis. He then set Low ET of the meet with a 7.00 while winning his semifinal race. In the final, he went up against Joe Jacono and won, going away with a 7.07/225.00 (Top Speed). |

Notes: In 1979, as the defending champions, we were runner-up to Don Garlits at the PHR again running in the high 5's (we had half a car at 600 feet on Garlits when the transmission let go). Speeds were 247.25 at Union Grove, Wisconsin, and 245.10 at Indianapolis, Indiana. - John Abbott. | Photo from Indy 1979. | Abbott qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.98 in round one, beat Hank Johnson, but in round two, the car went into a wheelstand and Abbott shut off against Shirley Muldowney. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #8 and in round one, he beat Richard Tharp in the "Candies and Hughes" car. In round two his 6.28/232 beat Dave Uyehara's quicker 6.27/243. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires to a 6.69/225 that lost to Bill Pryor's 6.56/215. The next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where he qualified #6 in the eight-car show. Johnny lost to Clayton Harris in the first round. The team also competed at Atlanta International for the IHRA Dixie Nationals, but failed to reach the finals. The rain-delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals saw the team qualify #3 in the eight-car field. Abbott beat Jeb Allen in the first round, before losing to Muldowney in the semifinals when the car again went into a wheelstand. A 5.95 qualified #1 at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but in the first round, Abbott's 6.02/245.90 lost to Marvin Schwartz's 5.95. Over 30 Top Fuel cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car show at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Abbott qualified #2 with a 5.97 behind Kelly Brown's 5.89. He beat Uyehara in round one, and Allen in round two before losing to Don Garlits in the semifinals. Bristol was the next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. Johnny qualified #2 with a 5.95 behind Dave Settles' 5.86 in the "Blue Max" dragster. These two would work their way into the final. Abbott ran a best of 5.95 in eliminations in beating Neil Mahr in round one. In the final, he improved to 5.90 at 240.00, but it was good for the runner-up spot to Settles' strong 5.79/246. On July 15, Abbott was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he was now driving Jeg Coughlin's new car. Best NHRA times for the Jet X machine were 5.970/239.36 at Columbus. |

Notes: Photo from 1989 Gatornationals. The Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 1. Winter 89/90 has 284.81. | Frank started the year by qualifying #7 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.11/283.28. A first-round 5.53/270.10 beat Ed Moore. In the second round, Frank's 5.12/279.76 beat Connie Kalitta. He lost to Frank Bradley in the semifinal. At the Supernationals in March, he lasted until the semi finals before losing to Joe Amato. The team failed to qualify at the Gatornationals where a best of 5.31/280.93 was good for the fifth alternate. They rebounded by making the show in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 5.26/267.85 qualified #13 and an improved 5.15/278.12 beat Gene Snow in the first round. Frank slipped to a 5.47/236.53 in round two that lost to Dick LaHaie's 5.16/278. Then they went to Memphis for the Mid South Nationals where they again failed to qualify. At Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals, Frank qualified the car #10 with a 5.25/279.76. He picked up to a 5.14/280 in the first round, to beat Gary Ormsby. He had a close second round race with Lori Johns that he won with a 5.33 to her 5.34. In the semifinals, Darrell Gwynn smoked the tire against him and his 5.36/274 took him into the final. Frank lost to Snow in the final, but it was the team's first final round appearance of the season. Yet at the next event, the Springnationals, a best of 5.24/281.69 left them outside (first alternate) the field again. |

Notes: Dick started the '86 season by setting Low ET while qualifying #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.40 at 264.70. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round and crossed the centerline, losing to Gary Beck. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.49/258.62. He made his way into the final by stopping Earl Whiting in the first round, with a 5.54/254.66, while a round two 5.54/257.58 beat Darrell Gwynn. Dick stepped up to a 5.47/258.76 in the semifinals to beat Beck's 5.51/260. This put him into the final against Don Garlits. The two had a good race, but Garlits' 5.50/268 beat Dick's 5.56/259.36. Dick ran 5.41 as one-half of the quickest side-by-sider at that point (with Darrell Gwynn at 5.326). Dick qualified #5 at the World Finals and made it to the semifinals with best times of 5.410/261.39. Photo from 1985 Nationals. |

Notes: Fourteenth member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club on February 20/1994, with a 300.60 at Phoenix. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Also 4.789 at Houston 94 and 4.807 at Arizona 94. Photo from 1994 US Nationals. | Conrad started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 4.97/271.32 was good for the sixth alternate. He ran much better at Arizona for the NHRA Quality Care Nationals where his 4.82/294.69 qualified #5. He beat Bob Vandergriff's 5.05/282 in the first round, with a 4.89/300.60. In round two, a 4.83/298.11 beat Mike Dunn's 4.88/289. Kalitta ran a personal best ET (up to this point) in the semifinals with a 4.80/298.90. Unfortunately, it came in a loss to eventual winner Cory McClenathan's Low ET of the meet 4.74/298 mph blast. |

Notes: The second of three top fuel cars that Prudhomme ran in 1971, this car had a 220-inch John Buttera chassis, a Keith Black Hemi, and a body designed & built by Quinn Epperly and Nye Frank. The car also had Kirby paint and Kelly lettering. It won Best Engineered at the 1971 NHRA Springnationals, but proved too heavy to be competitive. Don ran the car with the wedge body through the summer, but removed the heavy body work by Indy and installed a wing. The highlight for this car came when it lost the then quickest side by side race in drag racing history. The race took place at OCIR during the PDA Championships in July. Don ran 6.41/234.98, losing to Rick Ramsey's 6.41/229.50. Qualified at Indy at 6.433. Don replaced this car in November when he took delivery of the 1190 lb. Kent Fuller built "Yellow Feather." |
