Notes: Rick qualified #6 at Pomona at 6.824/199.55. He beat Don Prudhomme in round one, 7.16/204.08 to 7.69/146.57. He lost to Carl Olson in round two, 6.92/211.24 to 7.06/208.81. Rick was runner-up at Bakersfield 1971 to Don Garlits. He lost on a holeshot, Don's 6.71/223 mph to Rick's quicker 6.64/224. At the Dallas Springnatinoals, Rick qualified #24 at 6.751/208.33. He won round one over a fouling Mike Snively, 8.24/115.83 to 11.14/59.52, but fouled himself against Jim Nicoll and lost in round two, 8.20-96.77 to Rick's 7.29/148.27. Rick set a 6.51 national record at Fremont, CA, on 6/26/71. The team qualified #10 at Indy at 6.504/208.33 but fouled against Tom Kaiser in round one, tossing out an excellent 6.51. Rick qualified #32 at the Ontario Supernationals at 6.938/174.41. He improved in round one but still lost to Ted Thomas, 6.72/213.77 to Rick's 6.77/161.57. Rick ran 6.41/229.59 at OCIR (Chuck Johnson provided a photo of the record jacket), winning a side by sider against Don Prudhomme at 6.41/234.98. Also, set a 6.61 OCIR track record earlier in the year. | Chuck Johnson on the records: The following is the extent of my personal record keeping on the matter. I don't remember the dates, but this was just before Garlits ran the first offset axle at Indy. The resulting 6.21 run picked up .2 seconds on the rest of the quick cars in the country. The California Chargers had recently set the National Record in Fremont and held it for a whole two weeks before Garlits set yet another new record. |

Notes: NHRA season: Ran 7.544/211.77 DNQ at Pomona, 6.265/239.36 at Gainesville, 6.445/223.32 at Columbus, 1st alternate at Sanair (no time), and 6.31 3rd alternate at Indy. Jim was at Lakeland on March 4 for the IHRA Winternationals. His 6.72 qualified #3 for the sixteen-car field, and in round one, his 6.65/215.31 beat Dick Lahaie's 6.95/198. In round two, Marvin Schwartz broke against him, as did Dale Funk in the semifinal. Sometimes luck goes your way. Pat Dakin also broke in the final, and Walther made an easy pass for the victory. Shortly after that (March 18), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. As mentioned, his 6.26/239.36 qualified #12. But in the opening round, his 6.38/234.98 fell to Don Prudhomme's 6.20/226. In April, Indianapolis held an eight-car show, and Jim was there, but he lost in the opening round. He won the NHRA Division Three opener held at Indianapolis on April 29. He qualified #1 at 6.24/220. He then ran 6.22/229.00 over Jack Mitchell, and he got an easy solo in the semifinal when Jon Hansen was unable to show. He showed that he didn't need any luck here, as in the final, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.16/234.98 to take the title over Lou Novelli. Walther ran well at Rockingham on May 6 for the Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #1 with a 6.27 and then beat Mitchell in the first round, with a 6.31/223.32. A second-round 6.22/228.42 (Top Speed) beat Charlie Moulder. He made an easy pass in the semifinals after Paul Longenecker could not appear after blowing his engine in his second-round race. In the final, he ran against Tommy Ivo. Jim slipped to a 6.54/227.27 runner-up finish to Ivo's 6.33/226. A week later (May 13), he was at National Trail for the second NHRA Division 3 race. Only seven cars showed for the eight-car field, so qualifying wasn't tough, and Jim ran an easy 7.07 for the #4 spot. He singled in the first round when Ed Van Horn failed to make it to the line on time, but Jim could not make it to the line himself to face John Powell in the semis. On May 23, he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grand American held there. He advanced past round one with a 6.56/213.27, and in the semifinals, a 6.45/212.76 beat Steve Carbone. Jim broke in the final, slowed to an 18.03/40.21, and watched as Chris Karamesines roared (?) to a 7.35/141 victory. The Edgewater National Open was held on June 2, and Jim set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.26/234.76. In the opening round, Walther's 6.55/218.44 beat Jim Bucher's 6.56/217. In the semifinal, he faced eventual winner Pat Dakin. Jim had his parachute fall out at half-track while Dakin advanced with a 6.40. The following week (June 10), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His unlucky 6.44/223 qualified him in the dreaded #9 spot, forcing him to run low qualifier, Randy Allison in the first round. Sure enough, Allison's 6.41 dropped Jim's 6.72. Jim also ran 6.16 at Irwindale this year. |

Notes: Danny attempted to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals, but his best of 6.00/238.09 failed to qualify. He then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #8 with a 5.93. A first-round 6.05 beat Don Durbin, and in round two, a 5.85/238.72 beat Ray Stutz. His times kept improving, and in the semifinals, a 5.80/242.58 beat Doug Kerhulas. He faced Shirley Muldowney in the final and ran a 5.66 (Low ET) at 247.25 to take the victory over Shirley's 5.90/243. The team then went to Gainesville for the Gatornationals, where Danny qualified #7 with a 5.77/249.30. He beat a motor-blowing Jim Head in the first round before losing to Larry Minor's 5.51/246 in the second round with a 5.80/235.60. At Columbus, a 5.90/241.28 qualified #12 for the NHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Connie Kalitta in the opening round. The team was the runner-up at NHRA Denver. Their best NHRA national event times were 5.716 at the World Finals and 249.30 at Gainesville. Danell had tuning help from Dan Olson and the Fresno-based Eddie's Speed Shop gang. Notes: Kenny took his first ride in a Top Fuel car in Jan at Firebird Raceway's test and tune event. He had famed crew chief Mike Garrison tuning the car. The car was the former Al Hanna car that had only been run in two events before Koretsky bought it. He arrived late at Firebird and only got in two runs. A 7.25/108.74 and an up in smoke shut-off run. He attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was the first alternate with a best of 5.18/267.61. He managed to qualify #15 at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.27/267.30. In the opening round, both he and his opponent, Lori Johns, broke, and Koretsky won the coasting contest with an 8.91/85.30 to her 11.44/89. Things didn't go too well in round two, where he lost an engine and the race to Gary Ormsby. The engine blew in the lights, and the fire burned off the parachute. He went into the sand trap at the end of the track and had to be taken to the hospital with a cracked vertebra. Ever the trooper, he showed up at Houston in the first week of March for the NHRA Supernationals. His 5.07/281.33 qualified #12. In the first round, his 5.19/273.22 lost to Joe Amato's 5.08/276. Koretsky continued to impress at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 5.19/274.13 qualified #11 in a race that even Shirley Muldowney failed to qualify for. In round one, his 5.30/230.29 beat Mike Brotherton's 5.72/231. He slowed even more in round two, where his 5.42/262.08 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.11/272. Ken was the first alternate at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.26/272.80 best. Photo from 1990 Nationals. |

Notes: Mullins ran strong in '85. He started the year by qualifying #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.57/263.00. A first-round 5.91/214.79 got around Frank Bradley, but in round two he lost a motor and the race to Larry Minor. At the Gatornationals, he continued to run strong. A 5.66/255.10 qualified #7. He beat Hank Endres in the first round, with a 5.68/256.41. In round two he upset Don Garlits with a 5.67 over Garlits' 5.68. Unfortunately, facing Joe Amato in the semifinals, he fouled. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. It was an eight-car show and Bill qualified #4 with a 5.64/249.03. He lost to Gene Snow in the first round. The Cajun Nationals featured another eight-car show. Qualifying was tough as Mullins blew an engine trying to make the show. Another engine was put in and he qualified. He beat Gary Beck in the first round, with a 5.74/249 and in the semifinals, a 5.67/254 beat Darrell Gwynn. In the final, he faced Garlits and Don claimed his 25th NHRA win to beat Mullins. It was still a very good showing for the team. He finished one spot higher at the next NHRA event, the Springnationals at Columbus. He qualified #4 with a 5.61/252.95 and beat Dan Pastorini in the first round. He got revenge on Garlits in round two when he beat him with a 5.69/252 over Don's off pace 5.95. Bill out drove LaHaie in the semifinals with Bill's 5.71/258.02 (Top Speed) beating Dick's quicker 5.66/251. In the final he faced Beck. Mullins ran a 5.62/257.58 to take the win over Gary's 5.71/245. The NHRA tour headed to Canada for the Grandnationals at Sanair International at the end of June. Once again it was an eight-car show. Mullins qualified #3 with a 5.58/257.87. He ran Garlits in the first round, and fouled against him. Mullins really stepped it up at the Summernationals at Englishtown. He ran a 5.477/257.14 to qualify #3. John Carey car was former Jody Smart machine |

Notes: Photo from the 1976 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. The best NHRA national event speed was 230.76 at the World Finals. | Markley started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.24, but an off-pace 6.47 in the opening round lost to Tom Kaiser's 6.33. He then went to Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Classic. There, his 6.07/243.24 qualified #5. In the first round, his 6.07/233.76 beat Junior Kaiser's 6.45/185 but in the second round, he shut down to 8.16/106 in a loss to the eventual winner James Warren's 6.18/218. |

Notes: Wayne was at Lions on June 22 for an eight-car show. He qualified on the pole with a 7.25/208.32. In the first round, he beat Joe Lee's 7.38/211 with a 7.20/211.76. King advanced when Bill Alexander's car caught fire on the line in the semifinals and was shut off. In the final, he raced John Mitchell in the "Red Mountain Boys" car. John had earlier set Low ET and Top Speed, so it was a good race. Wayne won the race with a final round 7.36 that just nipped Mitchell's 7.37. Tony Waters and King were back at Lions a week later (June 29) for another eight-car show. This time they qualified #4 with a 7.19, and Wayne was a bit off in the first round, when his 7.58/217.38 lost to Alexander's 7.74/213. OCIR held its Nitro Championships on July 6, and Wayne qualified #10 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, an off-pace 7.77/156.79 lost to Kenny Safford's 7.29/207 in Ted Gotelli's car. The following weekend (July 14), the team was at San Fernando, where only four cars showed up to race. Wayne ran 7.53/180.26 to advance to the final, where he met Larry Dixon driving Bill Martin's car. King got the win, running 7.47/221.12 over Dixon's 7.62/193. At Lions on July 20 for the PDA Meet, Wayne failed to qualify for the top sixteen, but with 64 cars, they held four sixteen-car shows! He qualified #2 in the second sixteen with a run of 7.05/219.50. A first-round 7.07/215.86 advanced, but in round two, the car developed problems and slowed to 8.85, which lost to Ron Rolstad's 7.21/183. Wayne raced one NHRA national event, the Indy Nationals, where he qualified #27 with a 7.012/218.44. He beat a shutting-off Jim Dunn in round one, with a 7.03/226.70. Wayne improved further in round two, hitting a 6.089/229.00, but lost to Chuck Kurzawa's 6.87/223. |

Notes: First in the 5.50s, but not backed up for the record. Low qualifier at Indy with a 5.632. Beck started the '81 season at the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #7 with a 5.92. In the first round, he ran an off pace 6.43 and lost to Marvin Graham's 6.08. He then ran at Famoso on March 8 for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.14/225.56 qualified #13 in the sixteen-car field, and he suffered another first-round loss when he ran a 6.40/211.26 to lose against Jerry Ruth (6.00/225). The following week at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, a best of 6.08 failed to qualify for the all five-second show. In April, things got better for the team when a 6.12/203.61 qualified #2 for the NHRA Western Regional Opener at Green Valley. A first-round 6.21/219.51 beat alternate David Pace (6.64/224), and in the semifinal, a 6.27/224.43 beat a tire-smoking Graham. In the final, he met Low ET setter (6.00), Gene Snow, and a 6.29/206.42 took the win when Snow's car broke. On April 26, he again failed to qualify when his 5.93 was the first alternate at the eight-car field for the NHRA Southern Nationals. In May, he rebounded with a runner-up finish to Gary Cornwall at OCIR for the NHRA Western Regional. He qualified #4 with a 6.09/231.95 and beat John Kimble in the first round, with a 6.30/234.37. A 6.20/240.00 beat Rob Bruins in the semifinal, but a final round at 6.40/225.00 lost to Cornwall's 6.24/236. He finally got back into the fives again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals on May 24 when a 5.88 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he fouled against Richard Tharp in the first round. Another runner-up performance came at Bandimere Speedway on May 30 for another NHRA Western Regional meet. He ran 5.95/223.88 over Jim Archer (6.35/217) in the first round, and then set Low ET with a 5.93/229.59 victory over Bruin's 6.33/215 in the semifinal. In the final, another good run of 5.97/227.84 was good for runner-up as Johnny Abbott's 5.95/230 beat him to the finish. A big win followed on June 21 at the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.89/234.37 and beat Bruins, Jim Head, and Terry Capp to meet Butch Osmon in the Jim and Allison Lee car in the final. Beck won easily with a 6.05/224.99 when Butch had problems and slowed to 7.56/113. Things didn't stay so rosy as at the next NHRA event, the Mile High Nationals, on July 4. A best of 6.12/208.81 in the thin air was a non-qualifier (#1 alternate). Again things changed for the better as he went out and won the NHRA Summernationals, setting Low ET at 5.74 in his semifinal victory over Jeb Allen and beating Mark Oswald in the final, 6.02/221.13 to Mark's 6.16/236.84. At the third NHRA Eastern Regional event at Indianapolis, he qualified #4 at 6.04. A first-round 5.98/219.51 beat George Tolon's 6.08/228. Doug Kerhulas stepped up with a 5.88/236 to put Beck's 5.96/223.32 on the trailer in the semi. Then he won at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.79, advanced past a fouling Jody Smart in the first round, and beat Tharp in the semis with a 5.83/236.84. In the final, a 6.01/231.95 beat Jeb Allen's 6.30/241. On July 26, he showed up in Atlanta for an NHRA Eastern Regional race and won that too. He qualified #3 with a 6.07/210.77 and ran a first-round 5.82/237.46 over Jenks Bailey, and a semifinal 5.97/216.86 took care of Smart (6.09/230). He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 5.80/243.24 defeat of Jim Head's 6.04/234. Gary's streak of wins ended on August 9 in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.74/246.57 and beat Doug Kerhulas with a 5.89/241.28 in the first round. Unfortunately, a broken fuel line in the semifinal gave Graham a single into the finals. He qualified #1 again at Indy with a track record 5.63 at 244.56 but again failed to reach the finals. Oswald stopped Beck in the first round, at the IHRA US Open on September 13. Gary ran an off pace 6.37 to lose to Mark's 5.82/212. In October, he qualified #2 at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals but was upset by Connie Kalitta in the first round. Then came the NHRA World Finals. He qualified #3 with a 5.72/226.13 and a first-round 5.73/233.76 beat Dick LaHaie (5.83/233). Round two saw Beck's 5.72/239.36 beat Lucille Lee (5.95/234), and in the semi's, a 5.77/236.84 beat Shirley Muldowney (5.97/211). In the final, Beck dropped a bombshell, his 5.57/245.23 defeated Dwight Salisbury and broke the track et record of 5.77 held by Muldowney since May of '77. |

Notes: Runner up to Gary Beck at OCIR World Finals 1981. | Dwight was at Sacramento on June 27 for the NHRA Western Regional. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.92/229.60. Dwight beat Mike Palmer's 6.05/226 in the first round, with a 5.95/231.96 and a semifinal 6.03/192.31 advanced when Gary Cornwall broke a rear end. He was to face Jim Murphy in the final, but Murphy had blown his engine in the semifinals and was unable to make the final so Dwight soloed for the win with a 9.07. Dwight attempted to qualify for the eight-car show at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he was the fifth alternate with a best of 6.20/230.76. He also failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where his 6.13/223.43 was good for the sixth alternate. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1980. Where was the 5.72/247.93 run? | Tony qualified #12 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.95/233.16, but a 6.02 in the first round, lost to Jeb Allen's 5.87/245. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he ran a career-best (by two tenths) of 5.76/246.57 to qualify #5. But once again he went down in the first round, this time, the car was at fault as it was stuck in reverse giving Butch Osmon a single into the second round. Ceraolo attempted to qualify at the NHRA Southern Nationals, but his best of 5.91 failed to make the eight-car field. He did get a runner-up finish at the NHRA Eastern Regional in May at Englishtown when Doug Kerhulas stopped him for the money. Tony qualified #7 on May 24 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but in the first round, against Terry Capp, he pitched a blower. He was close to making the field on June 27 at Sacramento for the NHRA Western Regional. A 6.11/229.60 was good for #1 alternate. Shortly after that, he raced at Indianapolis for the NHRA Eastern Regional where his 6.10 did make (#7) the show. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.26/211.76 lost to Jim Head's 5.99/228. At the NHRA Summernationals, he again ran well, but his best of 5.99/231.36 was again #1 alternate. He traveled up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but again failed to qualify (5.99/236.22). |

Notes: Texas & Tharp - Damnedest Things You Ever Seen. One thing for sure, Tharp wasn't scared to put his foot into it until the last mph light. Always a threat for Top Speed of the meet, Tharp qualified #7 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.90/247.93. He ran a first-round 6.01/246.57 over Marvin Graham. Tharp beat Frank Bradley in the second round with a 6.05/243.90 to Frank's 6.12/220. In the semifinals, Connie Kalitta's 5.98/238 beat his 6.11/243.90. They went to Gainesville for the Gatornationals and didn't qualify well (#11), but he still made it to the semifinals after beating Shirley Muldowney in round two. He then lost to Gary Beck. Richard grabbed a big win the following week (March 23) at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.20 and beat Jeb Allen in the first round, in a close 6.02/243.24 to Allen's 6.03/238. In the semifinals, Dick LaHaie broke, giving Tharp an easy (?) 6.06/243.90 (Top Speed) run into the final to face Connie Kalitta. Both had run bests of 6.02 at the event, so it was anticipated to be close. Unfortunately for Kalitta, he smoked the tires and lost with a 7.25/132 while Tharp motored to a 6.05/243.90 win. On March 30, NHRA held its second Division 4 race at Green Valley. Tharp qualified #1 with a 6.18 and set Top Speed at 238.72, but he lost in the semifinals to Beck's 6.39/222 with a close 6.41/234.98. The team was headed to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships but never made it as their transporter broke down. Beck stopped him again on April 27 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Tharp qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 5.98/245.90, but a first-round 6.05 lost to Gary's 6.04. He took another first-round loss at the Divisional race at Gulfport International, where his 6.11/234.98 lost to Jeb Allen's 6.09/240. He looked as if he was on the way to a sure victory at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying at 5.82/247.25 and stopped Jeb in the first round, with a 5.91/243 to Allen's 5.95/242. In the semifinal, a 5.95/240 beat Mark Oswald's 6.09/237. In the final, he was to face Bob Hilton in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car, but Tharp lost a rear end, and Hilton soloed for the win. The team then traveled to National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals on June 8 with high expectations. A 5.93/242.58 qualified #1, but in round one, their 6.03 was beaten by Kalitta's 5.97. It was a bitter disappointment for the team, especially since they ran so well. On June 28, they were at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Tharp beat Don Garlits in the first round of the eight-car show with a 6.13/240.00 (Top Speed). Jerry Ruth stole their thunder in the semifinals, running a track record 5.98/231 over Tharp's 6.06/235.60. Another #1 qualifying position came at the NHRA Summernationals. This time, a 5.85/245.90 got the spot. A first-round 5.90/243.90 beat Bradley's 5.98/233, but Tharp lost to Dick LaHaie in the second round, despite setting Top Speed at 246.57 trying to catch him. The following week (July 20) found the team a Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Tharp qualified #4 with a 5.96 and improved to a 5.82/243.90 in the first round while beating Hilton. In the semifinals, he slowed to a 6.07 and lost to Oswald's 5.94/245. On August 3, it all came together at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. They qualified #1 with a 5.87/240.64 (nobody else was in the fives), set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.86/247.25, beating Kalitta, and in the semifinals, set Top Speed with a 5.92/247.93 pass that took out Hilton's 5.98/236. In the final, Richard met Jeb Allen and beat him with a 5.91/247.25 to Jeb's 6.20/237. The 247.93 was a new IHRA speed record. The team bypassed the NHRA Grandnationals event in Canada. At the US Nationals, a 5.85/237.46 qualified #4, and in round one, his 6.02/244.56 defeated Neil Mahr's 6.43/223. But in round two, the car smoked the tires hard, and he lost to Kalitta. Notes: Mike was the #4 qualifier at Indy at 6.221/222.77. He took a 6.450/226.13 first-round win over Stan Bowman, but fouled against Dan Richins in round two. At Ontario, Mike qualified #2 at 6.108/227.84 after Ed Renck's 6.08. In a mirror of the Indy round two, he beat a fouling Dan Richins in round one, with an 8.15 shut off. In round two, he ran 6.14/227.84 when Clayton Harris shut off on the line. Round three saw Mike become the first NHRA 5, and second member of the Cragar Five Second Club (after Tommy Ivo's match race time). Snively snoozed with a 5.974/235.69 to become the first NHRA racer in the fives, but Vic Brown left on him and won with a slower 6.034/231.95. Mike also ran 6.15 at Lions Last Drag Race. |

Notes: Gary started the season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.60/253.52. He improved to a 5.414/254.23 in the first round, over low qualifier Dick LaHaie who got out of shape and crossed the centerline. In the second round, he smoked his tires and shut off to 11.84/63.73, which lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.52/253. The NHRA Gatornationals was the team's next stop, and Beck qualified #2 with a 5.47/259.36. He beat Hank Endres in the first round, with a 5.58/253.52, while a round two 5.63/257.87 beat Kalitta's quicker 5.60/255. In the semifinals, Gary ran a strong 5.51/260.71, but he lost to LaHaie's stronger 5.47/258. He again qualified #2 at NHRA's next event, the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. This time a 5.49/259.96 got him the spot. He ran Chris Karamesines in the first round, and his 5.62/253.52 beat the "Greek's" 6.08/175. But in the second round, crew chief Bernie Fedderly put too much power into it, and Beck smoked the tires shutting off to 11.01/70 in a loss to Bill Mullins. Beck then made a stop at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet now held in May. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.55/257.14 and an improved 5.45/263.15 advanced past Denver Schutz, who shut off on the line in the first round. In the semifinals, it was Beck against Don Garlits. There was no love lost between these two. This time Garlits' unreal 5.37/271 was too much for Beck's 5.59/262.39. Back on the NHRA Trail for the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, the Miller American team had all kinds of problems and could only qualify #15 in the sixteen-car field with a 5.77/243.44. Fedderly worked his magic, and the car responded with a 5.63/250.34 in the first round, to beat Frank Bradley's 5.73/242. In round two, Beck had a close one with Joe Amato. Gary's 5.68/245.96 just nipped Joe's 5.69/249. In the semifinals, Gary once again met up with Garlits. This time he gambled on the 'tree and lost giving "Big Daddy" an easy 5.99/241 run into the final. If they thought they were running badly at Baton Rouge, they were not ready for National Trail. There they ran 5.79/247.86 for the "bump" spot at the NHRA Springnationals. This was uncharacteristic for the team. A first-round 5.75/248.34 lost to Jody Smart's 5.64/218 in the first round. Things were not much better at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. A 5.77/245.23 qualified #11, and a first-round 5.59/256.41 lost to Garlits' 5.43/268. The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9, listed a 5.378 for Gary, but we cannot find evidence of that. Removing that ET until we can validate. |

Notes: Shelly was impressive at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals. She qualified #3 with a 4.79/297.91 and went on to win the race. Anderson had a bit of luck along the way as in the first round, both she and Clayton Harris smoked the tires with her 6.43/185.03 getting the win. In round two, Shelly's 4.87/293.06 beat Mike Brotherton's 5.03/285, and another tire-smoking 6.53/146.60 advanced in the semifinals when Pat Austin lost a blower. In the final, she met Top Fuel veteRance McDaniel and her 5.46/178.74 got the win over Rance's 7.42/107. At NHRA's second event, the Quality Care Nationals at Arizona, she continued to qualify well, running 4.81/292.77 for the #4 spot in the field. Unfortunately, a 4.98/244.83 in the first round, loss to Mike Dunn's 4.86/277 in Darrell Gwynn's car. The next race was at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. A 4.79/292.30 qualified #6, and she lasted until the second round, where she crossed the centerline while running Scott Kalitta. Shelly was #6 again at the NHRA Gatornationals, where a 4.88/290.88 got her the spot. Anderson won an excellent first-round race against Eddie Hill, where his 4.92/293 lost to her 4.89/291.16. In round two, her tires broke loose, and she shut off to 9.91/83.54 that lost to Bobby Baldwin. Keith Black, BAE combination was banned after the 1994 season. (We need confirmation). ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. The 4.718/302.11 best NHRA times were the low qualifier at the Pomona Finals. Shelly topped 300 a few other times as well. |
