Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | Johns’ season started on a bad note when on January 21 thieves broke into the trailer and stole $40,000 in parts including a spare engine. The trailer was parked at the painters to get its new Jolly Rancher Candies colors painted on for '89. Lori qualified #6 with a 5.10/272.72 at Pomona for the Winternationals. Unfortunately, she lost to Jack Ostrander in the first round. At the next NHRA event, the Supernationals, a best of 5.14 failed to make the show, but she got into the field when rain postponed the event one week and Robert Reehl was unable to return the following week. Johns took his place in the show and made the most of it by beating Shirley Muldowney in the first round, with a 5.16 beating a tire smoking Muldowney. Gary Ormsby's 5.11 in the second round beat Lori's 5.13. At the Gatornationals, a 5.14 qualified #7, but in the first round, both she and Earl Whiting ran 5.22 with Earl taking the win. A 5.1/277.77 qualified #3 in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals and in round one, she beat Richard Holcomb's 5.23/251 with a 5.15/275.90. In round two, a 5.22/273.97 beat Dennis Forcelle's quicker 5.21/270, but in the semifinal, Lori's 5.73/178 lost to Dick LaHaie's 5.18/279. The next NHRA event was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. There she qualified #2 with a 5.04/279.24. Johns beat Ostrander in the first round, before losing to LaHaie's 5.08 in round two with a 5.19. The sixth race on the NHRA schedule was the Cajun Nationals. Once again, Lori qualified in the top half of the field with her 5.20/273.55 getting the #6 spot. She beat Eddie Hill in the first round, with a 5.26/271 to Eddie's 5.29. But in round two, she lost a close one to Frank Hawley when her 5.34 lost to Hawley's 5.33. She slipped a little farther back in qualifying at the Springnationals when her 5.15/275.14 was good for the #11 spot in the field. Lori beat Frank Bradley in the first round, but fell to Joe Amato in round two. From there, the NHRA tour shifted to Canada for the Grandnationals. Johns qualified #4 with a 5.19/273.06 and in the first round, a 5.28/271.82 beat Ostrander. In the second round, a 5.22/272.58 beat Darrell Gwynn's 5.34, but in the semifinal, Ormsby's 5.19/276 beat her 5.27/270.59. Whiting got her in the first round, at Englishtown for the Summernationals after she qualified poorly with a 5.22/271.90 (#13). At the tenth race of the season, the Mile High Nationals in Denver, crew chief Larry Meyer tuned her to a 5.28/265.48 to qualify #5. She beat Ostrander (again!) in the first round, and a round two 5.35/258 advanced over a tire smoking Gene Snow. In the semifinal, she set Top Speed on a 5.27/271.65 run that lost to Ormsby's 5.22/270. The next event was the California Nationals. A 5.15/276.49 qualified #11, but she lost to LaHaie in the first round. Another first-round loss came from Frank Bradley at Seattle for the Seafair Nationals. Her 5.15/274.47 lost to Frank's 5.12/284. Lori qualified for the show with a 5.13/276.66 (#10). Lori and her crew were overdue for a final round appearance, but she wasn't going to get one for the rest of the season. At the Northstar Nationals, she qualified #6 with a 5.21/273.55 and got lucky in the first round, when both she and opponent Mike Brotherton had problems and her 6.07/160 came out on top. In the second round, Lori's 5.27/264.86 lost a close one to Connie Kalitta's 5.26/278. At Indy for the US Nationals, Lori qualified #6 with a 5.03/280.98. She beat Richard Holcomb in the first round, before losing to LaHaie's 5.06/276 in the second round with a 5.13/274.47. The Keystone Nationals was the next event on the NHRA tour, and Johns qualified #8 for the event with a 5.05/280.63. She beat Mike Brotherton in the first round, with a 5.16/275.06, but once again LaHaie stopped her in the second round. This time his 4.97/284 beat her 5.19/272.14. |

Notes: Gary impressed many at the season opener at Pomona when he qualified the McGee car in the #8 spot with a 5.13/282.57. He won his first-round race with an off pace 7.04/199.95, but opponent Jim Head had even more trouble. In round two, Beck ran a 5.40/258.10 but lost to Dennis Forcelle's 5.11/269. In July, Gary also made the field at the California Nationals, running a 5.26/275.39 for the bump spot. A first-round 5.44/271.90 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.11/288. Another good showing came at Seattle for the Seafair Nationals. Gary ran a 5.22/275.22 for the #15 spot in the field, and in the first round, he ran Shirley Muldowney. The lady won the race with a 5.16/283 to Beck's 5.35/268.01. He attempted to qualify at the World Finals back at Pomona, but his best of 5.41/253.87 left him the seventh alternate. | Also 5.21 280.88 at a Sacramento match race against Lori Johns (ND). I think David Baca's Trans Am won that day, also. - Joe Moore |

Notes: License 7D112. AKA Chubasco. | On February 26, Jack was at Lions for the UDRA Winternationals. He qualified #27 in the 32 car field with a 7.84/195.94, but failed to make the finals. He was at Bakersfield for the March Meet. On Saturday, March 5, he ran in the 64 car show for Sunday's sit out position. Jack beat Jim Dunn's 7.86/183 in the first round, with a 7.75/201.34. In the second round Garlits fouled against him and in the third round, he slowed to an 8.48/138.86 loss to Roy Thode's 7.75/194. On March 27, Pomona held a Jackpot Circuit race that had seventeen cars show up for the eight-car field. Ewell qualified, but in the first round, he took a little nap and his 7.95/201.34 lost to Ray Schultz's slower 8.08/178. At another Jackpot Circuit race at Riverside on April 17, Jack again made the show, but he lost to the eventual winner John Mulligan in the first round. The next day (April 18) he went to Lions for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, his best of 7.89/198.22 failed to qualify, and he was second alternate. On June 4th, he was at Lion's for an eight-car show. He qualified #3 with a 7.70/209.30 and a 7.65/213.76 (Top Speed) beat Frank Pedregon while in the semifinals his 7.57/212.76 beat Steve Carbone. In the finals, he met a surprising Al Freeman who was driving a little Chevy-powered junior fueler. Al had been running in the 8.0's. It seemed like it was an easy victory for Jack, but the little junior fueler got out on him and Jack's 7.95/203.16 failed to catch Freeman's 8.06/180. He won over an eight-car field at Lions on June 18. A first-round 7.72/211.76 beat John Martin's 7.76/203 and in the semifinals he soloed with an engine saving 12.64. For the victory he beat Dick Huerta. He was at Lion's on July 2 for an eight-car show where his 7.74/210.00 qualified last. He stepped up to 7.61/214.28 in the first round, to beat James Warren's 7.74/206, but in the semifinals his 8.01/203.60 lost to Gary Gabelich's 7.81/161. |

Notes: Dale attempted to qualify at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.38/225.56 was good for the third alternate. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.299/231.95 qualified #4. He beat Don Powell in round one with a 6.41/192.71 to a 15-second shutoff. He ran 6.433/206.42 in round two to beat Carl Olson's 8.87/97 shutoff. In the semifinals, his throttle cable broke, and he lost to eventual winner Dave Settles, driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. Dale set new IHRA records of 6.04/238.72 at Bristol Springs. He was the third qualifier at the Summernationals with a 6.224/234.37. He went on to win that race with times of 6.52/221, 6.32/230, 6.23/233, and a final round 6.31/229 in a bit of revenge against Dave Settles. Dale qualified #3 at Indy at 6.076/237.46 and made it to the semis. He ran 6.45/167 against Gary Bekc in round one. In round two, he got a holeshot win over Bob Noice, 6.15/234 to 6.11/224. He easily bet John Weibe's shutoff in round three with a 6.43/219. In the semis, it was Dale who fell to a holeshot as Gaines Markley took a 6.180/236.22 to 6.178/233.16 win. We need to confirm the 5.99/239.36 numbers. Newspaper reports alternated Dale Funk's hometown as either Radcliff or Valley Station. Photo from Indy 1974. |

Notes: Markley started the year at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #13 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.34/226.13. An opening round 6.46/214.79 beat Mike Wagoner's 6.46/226, but he broke on the run, and Wagoner was reinstated with the "break rule" and went on to win the race. At Pomona, the following week for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.15/227.84 qualified #14, but the car let him down in round one again. This time a sputtering 12.45/63.55 lost to Pat Dakin's 6.07/219. He then went to Bremerton for the NHRA Division 6 Opener, where he qualified #6 in the eight-car show but failed to reach the finals. He was also one of 21 Top Fuel cars attempting to qualify for the eight-car field at Seattle in May for the Northwest Open. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify there. Markley did qualify for the AHRA Springnationals at Spokane, but he lost in the first round. Only five cars showed for the second NHRA Division 6 race held at Mission Raceway in B.C. Gaines ran 6.35/212.26 to beat Ron Smith and then got a solo in the semifinals. He faced Herm Petersen in the final, and he smoked the tires to a 7.14/187.89 while Herm picked up the marbles with a 6.35/223. In June, he was back in Seattle for the Olympia Gold Cup Championships, where he qualified #1 for the eight-car show with a 6.21/222.22. He went on to win, stopping a broken Graham Light in the final. He again qualified #1 at the next race, the PHR Championships in Martin, Michigan. His low qualifying time was even more impressive considering that 39 cars attempted to make the sixteen-car field. A 6.11 got him the spot. But as good as that was, a first-round 6.37 lost to Dave Settles' 6.30 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Qualified on the bump at 74 World Finals with his best times of the year, 6.052/239.36. Photo from the 1974 Popular Hot Rodding Championships, US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan. Runner up at Indy 1974 to Marvin Graham. He ran 6.11 at Martin, 6.25 at Pomona, and 6.26 at Indy. |

Notes: Ruth started his '73 season at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32 car field, and his 6.19/222.22 qualified #4. He looked like the car to beat in round one, when he ran Low ET of the first-round with a 6.16/229.00 that beat Steve Carbone's 6.88/156 in Larry Huff's car. He also had Low ET in round two by over a tenth when he ripped off a 6.10/230.17 to beat Chris Karamesines' 6.38/225. Jerry kept up the pressure on the other teams with a 6.13/227.15 in round three to defeat Gary Egbert's 6.34/216. Don Prudhomme smoked the tires in the semifinal, and Ruth advanced with a 6.12/224.43. His final-round opponent was Don Garlits. He qualified #1 at 6.09 and had run as good as 6.19 during eliminations. Ruth definitely had the advantage. But Ruth was late in the final, and although he reset the AHRA ET record to 6.06 (speed on the run was 223.32), Garlits had got out on mine, and his 6.16/239 took the victory. That had to hurt. He then made the trip to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran 7.16/207.85 on the first weekend (February 3) of qualifying on the horrible track surface. That gave him the #17 spot in the field. But rain kept interrupting the race, and it wasn't run until February 18. His time had been bumped back to the #22 spot by then. He lost to Gaines Markley in the opening round of eliminations. His next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet. It was yet another 32 car field and his 6.40 qualified #2 behind Steve Carbone similar 6.40 clocking. Denver Schutz blew his engine in round one, while racing him and Ruth advanced at 7.10/223.68. In round two, he defeated Flip Schofield with a 6.66/227.84. In the third round, he got out of shape against Randy Allison and shut off. Allison won with a 6.72. The AHRA Northern Nationals was held at Fremont, and Ruth qualified on the pole for the sixteen-car show with a 6.31/233.16. He easily made it past the first two rounds before running into Garlits in the semifinal. The two had a great race that saw the "Old Man's" 6.27/232 beat Jerry's 6.32/231.95. To add insult to injury, Garlits went on to win by beating James Warren in the final. The following week(March 18), Ruth was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified in the unlucky #9 spot with a 6.22/236.88, forcing him to run low qualifier Carl Olson in the first round. Ruth ran well in their race, but his 6.24/229.59 fell to Olson's 6.09. In April, he was in Seattle for the Northwest Open. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.43/224 qualified #7. He improved on his qualifying time in round one, where his 6.26/227.84 beat Wayne King's 6.83/202. King got back in on the "break rule" and lined up against Ruth once more in the second round. Once again, Jerry laid down a number; this time, his 6.16/238.09 eliminated Wayne's 6.45/228 for good. But he slowed to a 6.46/229.59 in the semifinal that lost to eventual winner Don Moody's 6.51/222. He was back in Seattle in May for an eight-car show. He opened eliminations with a 6.16/233.76 to beat Ron Smith, and he got an easy solo in round two went Larry Kleinbrook broke. He faced Hank Johnson in the final. Ruth ran a 6.55/220 in the final, but he lost to Johnson, who was losing a blower in the lights at 6.48/205. On May 20, he scored a victory at the NHRA Division Six opener at Bremerton Raceway. An opening round 6.23/225.56 beat a tire-smoking Markley. Another strong 6.27/227.84 defeated Johnson's 6.52/208 in the semifinal. He faced low qualifier Herm Petersen in the final, and Herm "banged" his blower on the line, so Ruth got the victory with a 6.53/204.54. Not only did he win TF, but he also won the Funny Car eliminator at this race. World Champ 1973. Photo from the 1973 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park, where they ran 6.132/238.09. Also ran 6.12 at Ontario Supernationals 1973. |

Notes: Chrisman ended the 1958 season on a high note and kept it rolling into 1959. At one of these early-season meets (possibly the Feb. 15 Riverside event), his blower exploded, blowing some of the body off and torching the rest. The exquisite paint job that it had when it appeared on the front cover of the Jan. 1959 issue of Hot Rod Magazine required a redo. On Feb. 15 at Riverside, he took Top Eliminator with a world record time of 8.54 and a speed of 181.81 mph. Two weeks later, he took Top Eliminator at the Bakersfield March Meet. Another feather in his cap. He took another TE win at Riverside on Apr. 19. Could he win the big meets? You're dang right! At Bakersfield on May 3, he clocked 8.41. Hustler I was really cooking. At Riverside on May 10, he ran 8.65 and 180.00 mph. He turned 8.80 at 176.81 on May 24 at Vaca Valley. On a return visit to Vaca Valley, he ran 176.81 mph but cracked a cylinder head. Not to worry. Chrisman-Cannon had another trick up their sleeve-Hustler II was in the wings. The Hustler II was an open-bodied car with the engine exposed, very different in appearance than Hustler I. Art drove Hustler II to a TE victory at Riverside on July 26 on the car's first time out. Things looked very promising with the new car. But after a disappointing outing at Lions and blowing the motor at Fremont, Art went back to racing Hustler I. But misfortune stalked him. He made a run at Fremont in Hustler I on Sep. 13 at 169.17 mph during time trials, but a ring and pinion gear gave out and put him on the trailer. At a 2-day meet at Kingdon the following week, he was beaten by Ted Cyr in the early rounds of eliminations. That was it for the season. Notes: The team ran 6.70s consistently on the NHRA national event trail in 1971. They were the #9 qualifier at the Englishtown Summernationals at 6.755 but got disqualified for going off the track in round one. A 6.77/217.39 did not qualify at Indy. A 6.792/217.39 did qualify at Ontario, however, and they went rounds. Ted beat Rick Ramsey in round one, 6.72/213.77 to 6.77/161. Chip Woodall beat Ted in Round two, 6.55/212 to 6.72/211.26. Current Jade Grenade (owned by Don Trasin and restored by Pat Foster) was found at the 2007 National Hot Rod Reunion, Columbus. Rick Howard photo. For 1971, the car won 8 events, took two runner-ups, and set 10 track records running a best of 6.33/233 (October '71) to establish itself as one of the quickest front-engine cars in the country. Listed times from National Dragster, 10/29/71. Ran 6.337 at New England Dragway. East Coast Drag News race promo cited 6.31/234 times at Epping in late 1971. Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. | Shelly qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.01/290.69. In the first round she fouled and shut off to a 5.40/212 that lost to Cory McClenathan's 4.82/295. She was first alternate with a 5.13/266.58 at the next NHRA race, the Arizona Nationals. At Houston, a career-best 4.87/294.11 qualified #9 for the NHRA Supernationals. In the first round both Shelly and Kenny Bernstein ran 4.91 (Anderson at 291.45), but Kenny got the win. Gainesville was the next stop for the NHRA tour. Shelly qualified #5 with a 4.89/290.97, but a first-round 4.98/281.07 lost to Mike Dunn. She did not compete at the NHRA Winston Invitational, but was back on the tour for the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Shelly qualified #10 with a 4.96/283.91. In the first round both she and Mike Brotherton smoked the tires. Anderson's 7.18/119.85 lost to Mike's 6.30/220. At the sixth race of the year, the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, a 4.98/283.19 qualified #11. She lost to McClenathan in the first round. The seventh race of the season was the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown. Shelly qualified #9 with a 4.91/279.15. In the first round she ran another strong 4.97/274.89, but Rance McDaniel beat her with a 4.93/296. Mid-June was the NHRA make its annual stop at National Trail for the Springnationals. A 5.04/278.81 qualified #12. She stepped up to a 4.99/279.76 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to get around Bernstein's 4.92/294. Anderson qualified #5 at the NHRA Western Nationals with a 4.99/277.09. In the first round she took a little nap on the line and Don Prudhomme's 5.20/260 beat her quicker 5.15/269.29. Finally, at the tenth race of the season, the NHRA Mile High Nationals at Denver on July 25. She got her first-round win on the year and the winning time was a 10.64/72.80. Shelly shut off after watching Bernstein foul in the other lane against her. In qualifying, she had run 5.33/255.53 for the #14 spot in the show. In the second round, Shelly ran her best time of the day, a 5.31 at 258.76, but she lost to Doug Herbert's 5.24/273. The month of August didn't go so well when her best of 5.13/273.97 failed to qualify (first alternate) for the NHRA Autolite Nationals at Sonoma. The following week (August 8), she failed to qualify at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals with a 5.12/279.15 best (third alternate). On August 22, Anderson debuted a new Uyehara built car at Brainerd for the NHRA Champion Auto Stores Nationals. It didn't help her in qualifying as her 5.63/193.54 failed to make the show. There were 17 cars there and she was, unfortunately, the slowest. Shelly hoped to turn things around at the start of September. She showed at Indianapolis for the US Nationals and attempted to make the field. But once again she failed to get in; a best of 5.05/277.60 was good for the fourth alternate. Her over as crew chief at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals and it must have helped as her 4.98/280.54 qualified #13. She picked up to a 4.89/289.48 to beat Tommy Johnson Jr's 4.91/287 in the first round. She made it past the second round for the first time this year with a 5.67/169.90 when Pat Austin was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. In the semifinals, a 4.95/285.53 advanced her into the finals over a tire-smoking Eddie Hill. In the final, she ran Mike Dunn in Darrell Gwynn's car. It was a close race with her 4.98/281.42 prevailing over Dunn's 4.99/278. It was Shelly's first NHRA National event win. |

Notes: Connie ran then-quickest 7.17 at Winternationals in 2/67 but did not back it up. Won Triple Crown (all 3 Winter events that year). Qualifying numbers were 7.401/219.50 at Pomona Winters 67. | Connie qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternats with a 7.46. He advanced past the first-round when Dave Powers fouled and then ran Low ET at 7.44 in beating Chris Karamesines in round two. He beat Leroy Goldstein in the third round and John Mulligan in the semifinal. In the final, a 7.63/196.00 beat Bob Downey's 8.05/196. The numbers mentioned above qualified #16 at the NHRA Winternats at Pomona on February 5, and he went on to win. He opened up with a 7.289/214.28 to beat Chuck Griffith, while in the second round, a 7.249/214.78 beat Mike Snively's 7.35/212 in the "Hawaiian." In round three, the car continued to run quicker, hitting a 7.220/214.78 to stop John Mulligan's 7.39/212 from advancing. He faced the only other SOHC-powered car to qualify, Pete Robinson, in the semifinals. Pete got out of shape and shut off while Kalitta moved into the final with a 7.231/215.82. He ran Creitz and Greer's car in the final with Gene Goleman driving. For the final, Connie upped the nitro percentage from the 85% he had been running to 1988%. He took the victory with a Low ET shot of 7.173/218.43. It was interesting to note that the car was running a stock displacement 427 with aluminum heads. Ford had dynoed the engine at 1,640 hp on 85%. It weighed 1,280 lbs. Kalitta then won the NASCAR circuit opener at West Palm Beach. He bypassed the Bakersfield Meet to run at Deland for the NASCAR Winter Championships. He ran 7.29 (Low ET) at 205.46 in the opening round to beat Karamesines, a semifinal 7.44/202.70 defeated Joe Jacono, and a final round 7.44/207.80 beat Chuck Kurzawa in the Probe for the title. On April 2, at Fremont, Tommy Ivo ran Connie in a best-of-three-match race. Kalitta's 7.49/205.94 beat Ivo's 7.54/206 in the first race, but he failed to start for the second run giving Ivo a win even though he blew his blower on the single run. On the tie-breaker, Ivo's 7.74/210.28 beat Kalitta's 7.86/209.30. On April 8 for the HRM Championships, Kalitta (7.37) lost a close first-round race to Mike Sorokin's 7.36. At Oklahoma City on April 23, the two Winternationals finalists met for a match race. Gene Coleman won the first race with a 7.25/210.76 over Connie's 7.39/198.22. The Bounty Hunter took the second race with a 7.27/206.88 over Gene's blower-popping 7.36/184. Connie won the match when Gene was unable to run the final race. On May 14 at Motor City Dragway, Michigan, Karamesines met Kalitta for a match race. Connie won the match in three straight with a first-round 7.92/207, beating a sleepy Chris at 7.49/194. In the second race, the Greek fouled, and on the third run, Connie soloed for the win with a 7.75/200. Another best of three match race was run at Milan where he faced Dick LaHaie. In the first race, Dick soloed for the win when Kalitta's Ford failed to fire. After Dick ran, Connie fired the car and ran a 7.67/208.76. He evened up the score in the second race, winning with a 7.32/209. But in the last race, the big Ford came up ailing running on only seven cylinders. Kalitta attempted to make a race out of it, but when he saw the oil pressure at zero, he shut off to an 8.20 loss. On May 28, Connie set a 7.16 track record at Union Grove during the Olympics of Drag Racing. He made it into the final against another SOHC Ford, Pete Robinson's. In the final, Pete ran a 7.17/219 over Kalitta's off pace 7.61/195.65. On June 11 at Bristol for the NHRA Springnationals. Connie was one of only two drivers that qualified not using Goodyears. He and Tom McEwen were using M&H's. After qualifying #8 at 7.251/222.22, a first-round 7.199/193.96 beat an out-of-shape Al Friedman, but in round two, a holeshot 7.13/215 from Mike Sorokin beat his quicker 7.079/218.96. On June 25 at Tri-City, he won again for the NHRA Division 3 race. Kalitta found himself at Englishtown on July 26 for a best of three match against Snively.Mike fouled in their first race, and Kalitta won with a 7.53/204.54.The "Hawaiian" lost fire for the second race, and Conrad shut it down to 8.45/182.18 to win the match two straight. They both came out for a final run, and this time Kalitta fouled, although he turned the best times, a 7.48/212.26.The speed was a new track record. On August 13 at Pittsburgh for the All-American Fuel Championships, he ran a 7.42/204.08 best but failed to make the finals. At Indy, he qualified #3 with a 6.817/208.32 and made it to the semis. Connie won round one at 6.850/208.80 over Wayne Griffiths at 7.27/207. Earl Binns did not show for their race in round two, and Kalitta coasted to a 9.42/92 win. He beat Chuck Hepler in round three with an 8.87 shutoff when Hepler fouled. Connie fell off to a 13.13 in the semis, losing to James Warren. Another win came at the NASCAR season finale at Atco, where a final 7.03/213 beat Ron Rivero. Kalitta had run a 6.97/208.80 in the first round. At the NHRA World Finals at Tulsa, Connie was the third alternate at 7.500/210.00. Rick Howard photo from Don Garlits Drag Racing Museum. |

Notes: Mayer was at Famoso for the Bakersfield meet. Seventy cars were attempting to qualify for the 32 car field. He made the show and lasted until the third round, where his 7.57/194.36 lost to "Sneaky Pete" Robinson's 7.33/189. Bob made it to Riverside for the HRM Championships in April, but his 7.70/202.70 lost to Leroy Goldstein in the first round. He got back into the show on the "break rule," but he went into a wheelstand in the second round and shut off against Jimmy Nix. Lions held an eight-car show on April 22, and Mayer qualified on the "bump" with a 7.57. He lost to John Martin driving the "Savage" in the first round but once again got back in on the "break rule." In the semifinals, he beat James Warren with a 7.70/204.48. He faced Tommy Allen driving the "Allen and Huff" car in the final. Bob ran a good 7.59/209.30, but it was good for the runner-up spot to Tommy's 7.47/207. Another eight-car show was run at Irwindale on May 20. Mayer beat Ronnie Hampshire in the first round, with a 7.75 before losing to Warren's 7.39/201 in the semifinals with a 7.59/194.80. The next day (May 21), he was at Kingdon for the NHRA Division 7 race. He qualified #2 with a 7.48, but in the first round, the car lost fire against eventual winner Don Prudhomme driving Lou Baney's Ford. He had a bit of luck on his side at Irwindale on June 3. It was another eight-car field and a first-round 7.36/209.78 beat Butch Maas' 7.50/223 in Bill Crossley's car. But in the semifinals, he lost to Poindexter's 7.86/200 with a sleepy 7.59/210.28. Unfortunately for Poindexter, he ran off the end of the track and damaged his car, letting Mayer back into the show for the final. A final round 7.63/206.88 picked up the win over Hank Clark. A week later (June 10), he proved it was no fluke as he won at Irwindale again. This time he did not need the "break rule" to win. Bob started by running 7.61/207.84 to advance over a fouling Bob Brooks and a 7.53/206.88 beat Jim Dunn in the semifinals. He saved his best for last when he ran 7.49/204.57 in the final to win over Tom Toler. The "Speedmasters" were back at Lions on June 17. There were so many cars on hand that the track held two eight-car fields. While Mayer failed to qualify for the quicker of the two fields, he did get into the second group, where he lost to Martin in the first round. He made up for losing by returning to Lions and winning over the eight-car field the following week. A 7.66/213 in the opening round got a measure of revenge by beating Martin in the "Savage" while a 7.46/222.22 in the semifinal defeated a crossed-up Dave Beebe. In the final, his 7.67/215.82 covered the "Howard Cam Special's" 7.84. Bob was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show on September 9. He qualified with a 7.24/209.30, and he ran an even better 7.18/212.76 in the first round. Unfortunately, he was a little late off the line, and he lost to Bob Brooks' 7.29/215 in his Chevy-powered car. |

Notes: Ran 6.70 Track record at Lions, 6.75 at Carlsbad. | Cochran was one of fifteen cars that attempted to qualify at an eight-car show at Lions on April 12. He qualified #1 with a 6.70/225.56 that tied the track ET record held by John Mulligan. His 6.89/189.47 beat Gerry Glenn's 6.96/222 in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car in round one. Unfortunately, his rear end blew in the semifinals, and he slowed to 8.17/100.39, which lost to Tom McEwen's 6.87/217. He was back at Lions on April 19 for another eight-car show. He qualified #5 with a 6.81. In the first round, he picked up to a 6.75/216.86 beat Ron Manke's 6.78. A semifinal 6.90/222.22 beat Tommy Allen's off-pace 7.27/197. In the final, he was up against Rick Stewart driving for Bill Crossley. Gary got the victory with a 6.84 over Rick's 7.06. He took another win at an eight-car show at Irwindale on May 3. There he got around a fouling Glenn Woosley in the first round, while in the semifinals, he advanced when Manke was disqualified for running over the lights. In the final, he got his third easy win in a row when James Warren fouled against him, and he ran 18.81 to take the win. He was back at Lions on May 10 for another eight-car show. A 6.78 qualified #6 in the field. Bob Williams fouled against him in the first round, and Cochran advanced with a 6.79/217.39. A 6.93/205.47 in the semifinals lost to Manke's 6.96/198. OCIR held a big sixteen-car show on May 17, and Cochran made it into the final there too. In the first round, both he and his opponent Dave McKenzie smoked the tires, but Gary's 7.31/218.44 came out on top. In round two, his 7.16/226.13 (Top Speed) advanced over Wayne King. In the semis, his 7.24/225.00 beat Joe Lee. This put him in the final with Kelly Brown in Lou Baney's Ford-powered car. The race never came off as Cochran lost oil pressure and shut off on the line giving Kelly a solo for the win. Irwindale hosted the NHRA Division 7 race on May 24. Cochran qualified, but in the first round, his 7.35 lost to Hank Westmoreland's 7.20. Gary qualified #5 at the big 32-car PDA Championships at OCIR on July 19 with a 6.87. He picked up to a second-round 6.76 over Butch Maas, and in round three, he set Top Speed at 225.56 while beating John Mulligan. In the semifinals, he lost to Larry Dixon. Cochran was at Lions for an eight-car show on July 26, but a first-round 6.97/218.97 lost to Warren's 6.78/226. |

Notes: All three guys were full partners. Ron and Jeep are brothers. Hampshire was one of nearly 90 Top Fuel drivers that showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 6.85 qualified #7 in the 32 car field. He improved to 6.74/224 in the first round to advance. Ron lasted until round three before losing to eventual winner Larry Dixon. The number of cars that showed for these Top Fuel fields was nothing short of amazing. Fremont held its Northern Nationals of February 15, and 66 showed for the sixteen-car field. Ron qualified and ran an easy 7.30 when Tom Larkin broke a transmission in the first round. A great light coupled with a 6.84 beat Tommy Ivo's better 6.80 in round two. Don Prudhomme fouled away Low ET of the meet in the semifinal with his 6.52 losing to Hampshire's 8.26. Ron faced Steve Carbone in the final, and Steve's 6.67/225 got the victory over Ron's 6.98/223.32 runner-up effort. The following week (February 22), he was at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. He set Low ET and Top Speed during qualifying with a 6.69/229.00. But he was upset in the first round, where Tony Nancy's 6.74/218 beat his 6.77/229.00 (again!). Of course, many cars showed up at Bakersfield for the March Meet. Seventy-five cars attempted to qualify for the 32 car field. Hampshire's 6.94 qualified #11. He improved to 6.91/223 to win his opening round race, but an off-pace 8.22/187.00 in round two lost to Harry Hibler's 6.95/191. The second annual San Francisco National Open was held at Sears Point on March 15. Ron qualified #4 for the sixteen-car field. He shut down to 7.28 in a first-round loss to Bill Dunlap. The final OCIR All-Pro race was run near the end of March. Unlike the first three events, this one featured a sixteen-car field. Ron qualified, and then his 6.81 in the opening round beat Bob Murray's 6.98. Bob Hightower shut off against him in round two, and Ron advanced with a 7.43/167.59. Unfortunately, he fouled against Jim Dunn in the semifinal. His next stop was at Irwindale on April 11 for an eight-car show. His 6.90 qualified second to Ron Manke's 6.88. Another 6.90/225 advanced over a fouling Nancy in the opening round. But in the semifinal, he shut off to a 7.81/137.40 loss to eventual winner Dunn at 6.88/214. |

Notes: First woman Top Fuel driver over 300 mph. Sixteenth and final member of the Slick 50 300 MPH club on March 5/1994, with a 300.00 at Houston. | Rachelle attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but her best of 5.05/270.83 left her as the eighth alternate for the show. She came closer at Arizona for the NHRA Quality Care Nationals, where a 4.93/299.80 was the first alternate. Splatt ran really well at Houston. A 4.90/300.00 qualified #13 and an opening round 4.86/300.20 lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 4.84/287. | Confirmed 4.881. |
