Notes: In 1965, my car was the "World's Quickest Chevrolet," ran 7.43 at a national event-1965 AHRA Nationals, Green Valley, TX. We actually had Low ET of the meet and was below the AHRA record (for 1 day!) Watus Simpson driving the Anderson Bros. car beat us and set the record at 7.36. We ran 200.43 MPH at a separate race (Opelousas, LA). We were not the "Fastest Chevrolet," as Shubert-Herbert had run 202 (I think). But no other Chevrolet fuelers (and very few Chryslers) posted times of 7.5 or less in 1965. I feel this should put me in your top 1000 list somewhere? Notes: Finalist at the 1983 Golden Gate Nationals. Amazingly, Gary's 5.549 was the second quickest run to Gary Beck's incredible 5.391 world record. It was the quickest side by side race in history. Gary's best speed was a 250.00 at Indy. |

Notes: Frank started the '83 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. There was no traction on the track, and Frank's 7.45 actually qualified #7 in the eight-car show. He lost early. Traction wasn't a problem at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals in February. A 5.851/230.17 qualified #10, but he lost to Jody Smart in the first round, 6.34/245 to 8.70/108. In May, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals, where he ran a 6.49 to qualify #3. He beat George Tolon in the first round, but in the semifinals, his 6.36/214.28 lost to Don Garlits' 6.02/234. St. Louis was the next stop on the AHRA trail for the Gateway Nationals. Bradley qualified #5 there with a 5.96/225.01, but in the first round, Jerry Ruth's 5.93/240 beat his 6.12/220.59. On August 1, he was in Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals. Frank qualified #3 with a 5.84/226.13, but his car broke in the first round. He took a big win at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42, beating Garlits in the final, where both drivers ran 5.86. Another win came when he won the AHRA World Finals at Spokane. Bradley qualified #1 with a questionable 5.55 (Low ET). In the first round, he beat Danny Danell with a 5.79, and in the semifinals, he advanced when Dwight Salisbury broke in Gaines Markley's car. In the final, he ran the second qualifier, Tolon. Frank took the victory with a 5.92/241.93 over George's 6.04/221. He attempted to qualify at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals in October, but his best of 5.825/248.61 was good for the first alternate. |

Notes: At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Kalitta ran 5.831/240.00 to qualify #13. In the first round, he improved to 5.719/243.24 to beat Jim Barnard's 5.78/246. In round two, Connie fell off to 6.099/237.46 and lost to Jeb Allen's 6.07/238. He faced off against Lucille Lee in a best of three match race at OCIR. He won two straight with a best of 5.86/229. His next stop was Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.815/243.24 qualified #8. He beat Jim Head in round one, 5.836/239.36 to 6.01/238, and a 6.158/234.98 in round two topped Allen's slightly quicker 6.132/224, but he lost to eventual winner Shirley Muldowney in the semifinals when he shut off. The following week, he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He lost to Barnard in the semifinals with an ailing 16.01. Next, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 5.83/207 in the first round, beat Mark Prudhomme, but in round two, Shirley's 5.78/243 beat his early shutoff 6.38/154.37. Kalitta was impressive at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. The Nitro classes were only eight-car fields, and many "name" drivers failed to qualify. Connie's 5.767/236.84 qualified #3, and a first-round 5.837/234.37 beat Muldowney's 5.93/245. In the semifinals, his smoking 6.431/208.81 lost to Steve Hodkinson's 6.12/211. He made it to the final at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 5.90 in the final lost to Gary Beck's 5.86. Connie qualified #13 at NHRA Columbus at 5.900/240.00. In round one, he lost to Muldowney again, 5.84/238 to 5.955/227.27. At Sanair, Kalitta qualified #4 at 5.880/223.88. He beat Jeb Allen in round one, 5.791/240.00 to 5.89/240, and best Joe Amato in round two, 5.771/240.64 to 6.15/198. In the final, he got the win over Muldowney, 5.758/241.28 to 5.85/220. Connie qualified #7 at Englishtown at 5.736/243.90. In round one, he got the holeshot on Dick LaHaie, but Dick came back to claim a 'dead heat' decision on a 5.93/236 to 5.946/236.84 (the margin of victory was .000 seconds)! Connie qualified #6 at Brainerd at 5.756/241.28 but fouled against Shirley in round one, and lost a 5.88/236 to 5.903/203.61 duel. At Indy, Connie qualified #11 at 5.762/238.72, but he dropped a hammer in round one, with an out-of-nowhere 5.560/241.93 that took out Frank Bradley's otherwise solid 5.767/239.99. In round two, Connie kept it going with a 5.634/240.64 decision over a broken Dick LaHaie. He put a tenth on Gary Beck on the starting line in the semis and then extended that into a 5.687/244.56 to 5.76/240 decision. His final-round opponent, former girlfriend Shirley Muldowney, ran 5.60s herself all day. She got a slight jump on Connie and duplicated her qualifying time to take a 5.570/251.39 to 5.669/241.28 decision. rnThat final round served as the quickest side-by-side pass in history to that point and is considered one of the iconic drag races of all time. Kalitta qualified #2 at the Golden Gate Nats with a 5.653/230.76. In round one, he beat Jim Barnard, 5.640/238.72 to 5.95/235, but took out Dwight Salisbury in round two, 5.754/240.64 to 5.99/189. In the final, Connie took the measure of Gary Beck's shutoff run for a 5.593/241.28 victory. He qualified #7 at the World Finals at 5.757/236.84. Connie beat Dave Braskett in round one, 5.710/236.84 to 6.15/201, but he had troubles and shut down to a 7.37/133 against's Jody Smart in round two. Connie had a unique tune-up this year. He ran great ETs but did not mile per hour much at all. |

Notes: In March, he took Swamp Rat I to Arizona and California, doing well in the former but not performing so well in California. Returning to Florida in April, he stunned the drag racing world with a world record clocking at Brooksville. On June 14, he clocked 8.48 at 182.56 mph at the Southwestern Drag News Invitational at the Freeway Drag Strip in Houston on June 14. A week later, he suffered the fateful engine explosion at Chester, South Carolina, which landed him in the hospital for weeks with second-degree burns to his hands and face. In a hospital interview, he said he would retire from drag racing. "I'm through with drag racing," he said. "I'll never race again." He sold one of his engines but kept the dragster and got Art Malone to drive it for him for the rest of the season. Photo: Lansing State Journal, June 21, 1959 - MB |

Notes: Car started the year in this livery, but had the Revell colors on the car by Ontario at the end of the year. Carl was the number one qualifier at the 1973 NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.086/233.16, but lost in the second round when Jim Bucher beat him and set the national record with a 6.079/236.22. Newspaper account in Salt Lake City promoting the Division 7 race in August credits Carl with a best of 6.05 in 1973. We need to confirm where that occurred. 8.38 Pomona, 6.08 Gainsville, 6.41 Columbus, 6.15 Englishtown, 6.09 Indy where he qualifed 6.161 227.84, 6.11 (Qualified 6.161 227.84), Ontario- MG |

Notes: 6.27 at Irwindale Grand Prix 72 The Top Fuel team of Brent Cannon and Phil Soares were bucking the trend in '72 by having Don Long built them a 225" dragster that was still using an early Hemi. By then, everyone was running the 426 style Hemi. There were still a few holdouts, but to see a new rear-engined car with an early Hemi was rare. Soares built the engine using a '58 block with a Delta stroker crank. Ansen rods support Brooks 6:1 pistons. The cam, lifters, and pushrods were from Isky. Mondello reworked the heads. At the top of the engine, a Vancharger prepared the 6/71 blower. Cragar supplied the blower drive, manifold, as well as headers. The injection was by Enderle. The paint was by George Cerney. The team had invested $25,000, and the car's first outing was in January at the Lions Grand Premiere. The best early times were 6.79/215. The team ran two NHRA national events, Pomona and Ontario. They were the 9th alternate at Pomona at 7.08/210 and the 10th alternate at Ontario at 6.351/225. |

Notes: Also 6.35 at Lions Last Drag Race 72. Won IHRA Summernationals at Dragway 42 in August 72 with a 6.50/221.13. Ran 6.38 at Palm Beach, 6.313/224.43 at Tulsa PRA. | The team started the season at Fremont's New Year’s Day race. It was an eight-car show and a 6.72 beat Denver Schutz in round one, but Flip fouled against eventual winner Dennis Baca in the semifinals. They were at OCIR for the third All-Pro race where Flip's 6.51 qualified #5 in the eight-car show, but an ailing 7.17 in the opening round lost to Clayton Harris' 6.22/233. Schofield got a bit of revenge at the Las Vegas National Open where he got around Harris in the first round. This time Harris broke on the run. In the second round, Flip got beat by Jeb Allen. He was back at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals where a 6.38 in qualifying was good enough for the #2 spot in the field behind Don Garlits' 6.30. A first-round 6.46/223.88 beat Don Cook and in round two another 6.46 beat an out of shape Jim Nicoll. But in the semifinals, both he and Allen ran 6.47 (Flip at 227.84), but the "kid" got the win light. Later in the month, they were at the Race of Champions at Fresno, but Flip lost to Jim Lynn in the opening round. At the AHRA Pro-Am Championships at West Palm Beach, a 6.38 qualified well, but the team failed to reach the finals. They looked like a sure bet to win at the Florida State Championships at Miami-Hollywood. Flip qualified #1 with a 6.55/215.82. He improved to 6.51/225.56 in beating Marvin Schwartz in the first round, and he easily won his semifinal race to face #2 qualifier Steve Carbone in the final. Unfortunately, the car lost fire on the line and Carbone soloed for the win. It was then off to Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals. A 6.51 qualified #4 and an even better 6.43 beat the Anderson Brothers in the opening round. In round two he used a 6.58 to beat a tire-smoking Gary Cochran, but in the semifinals, the team was having trouble keeping the car lit. It finally died and Nicoll took a single to advance to the final. The NHRA Division 7 Opener was held at Irwindale. Schofield failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field, but Larry Bowers broke and Flip replaced him in the show. In the first round a 6.70 beat Mike Snively, but he lost in the following round. |

Notes: Denver ran at least as quick as 6.26 at Ontario 72. We need to confirm that this was the car he ran at that race. This car was owned and raced by Jim Garatti in 1972. |

Notes: Dave was the 1966 Division 5 Champ. The 6.86 followed by a 7.01 using an early multi-plate Crower slipper clutch (at NHRA regional event at Minneapolis in 7/67). High speed runs using a special rear-end gear. DNF due to later clutch failure (excessive heat w/full slipper clutch destroyed too many components). - Fred Becchetti. | Update 7/17: Terry thought the 6.86 was 9/67, but we found some newspaper articles about the meet and it appears it was July 1967. That is my recollection as it was one of the quickest runs at the time (below NHRA record?), but our 7.01 didn't back it up. Speed on that run was 214. Went faster later, but can use 214. ET was ahead of later 6-second runs (e.g., at US Nationals, when real slipper clutches had been developed). Partner Terry still looking for time slip. Had it/misplaced it! - FB |

Notes: East Coast Drag News race promo in 1972 claimed 231 for Tommy in 1969 on a run where his clutch exploded. We need confirmation. | Ivo was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and although it was a 32-car field, he and 49 others failed to qualify. He did a lot of match racing, even beating Don Garlits two straight at Island Dragway in New Jersey on April 13. Tommy ran 7.24/212.76 and a 7.13 at a questionable 238.72. He also faced Chris Karamesines in a best-of-three match at York US 30 on April 26. He lost the first race with a 7.08/183.66 to the "Greek's" holeshot-aided 7.18/216. But he returned to win the next two rounds and the match with a best run of 6.56/215.82. At the end of May, Ivo was at Martin, Michigan, for a UDRA race. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, his 7.07/205.94 beat Cliff Zinc's 7.12/205. In round two, he shut off early to a 7.43/150.00 loss against eventual winner John Mulligan's 6.60/230. On July 6, he went up against "Sneaky Pete" Robinson's Ford for a match race at Suffolk. Pete was having problems while Tommy's car was running great. He beat the Ford driver three straight with times of 6.97/199.10,6.95/216.34 and 6.98/213.76. Pete's best run was 7.27/164. Later in the month, he took on Tom McEwen at Kil-Kare. This time McEwen had problems and had his clutch lock up in their first race. Ivo won with a 7.51. Tommy came out for a solo run to win the match two straight, but the solo run cost him an engine. |

Notes: Tommy was the fourteenth member of the Cragar 4-Second Club on September 29, 1990, with the 4.964 at Topeka. Tommy started the season at Pomona, failing to qualify (10.37/79.71). At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.04/275.48 cracked the top half of the field (#7). Unfortunately, a tire-smoking 9.01/90.27 in the opening round lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.07/278. He was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where his 5.03/283.73 qualified #10. Both he and his first-round opponent, Shirley Muldowney, smoked the tires but Johnson's 6.01/267.93 crossed the finish line first in front of Shirley's 6.59/207. In the second round, his 5.38/211.41 fell to eventual winner Dick LaHaie's 4.96/279. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the Gatornationals held in mid-March. Tommy "only" qualified #13 with a 5.20/273.55. In the first round, he stepped up to a career-best 5.01/284.81, but he lost to a holeshot-aided 5.06/277 from LaHaie. He did race at the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham. Photo from Indy 1990. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. |

Notes: Gary qualified at Pomona Winters at 5.976/242.58. We need to confirm that this is the car that ran at the Summers (247) and not the silver car. Beck started his '78 season by running a 6.26 to qualify #3 at the AHRA Winternationals. Against Jim Plummer, the car got out of shape and crossed the centerline in the first round. He then traveled to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where the abovementioned times qualified Gary #7 in the field. A first-round 6.18/221 lost to Dick LaHaie's 6.09/230. Great 5.855 ET at Columbus and 247.25 at Englishtown, but Gary dominated Ontario before breaking in the final. He ran amazing 5.763/250.00 numbers there in qualifying. We are listing these times here, but they may apply to the other 1978 entry for Gary. That shows blank times for now, but adjust when we get confirmation of which car ran which event. Gary became the 5th member of the NHRA 250 MPH club with that pass. |
