Notes: Shirley started the year at OCIR in Jan for a best-of-three-match race against Don Garlits and his new "sidewinder" car. She won the first race with a 6.04/218, but in the second race, she shut off to 6.58/136.77 while Don won with a 6.52/215. In the tiebreaker, Muldowney won the match with a 6.25/192. Garlits got some revenge at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He was using his "regular" car and qualified #1 with a 5.85, with Shirley a tenth behind at 5.95. Muldowney ran 6.05 and 6.03 to reach the final to run Garlits for the title. Don had run 5.94 and 5.79 to make the final, so he obviously had a performance advantage. Shirley knew this, and she pushed the "tree too hard and fouled in the final. Another runner-up finish came at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.73/243.24 qualified #3, and she repeated that number in the first round, with a speed of 244.56 to beat John Kimble. In the second round, her 5.76/243.90 took out Jerry Ruth's 6.00/234, and a semifinal 5.87/242.58 beat Jeb Allen. She faced Dick LaHaie in the final. Unfortunately, Shirley lost fire, and LaHaie soloed for the win. Shirley then went to Sacramento for its Winter Classic race, where she set a 5.79 track record. Her speed on the run was 241. A 5.78/245.23 qualified #6 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. She then beat Mark Niver in the opening round. That was followed by a 5.82/242.58 defeat of Jody Smart's 6.01/241 in round two. She then dropped Connie Kalitta in the semifinal with a 5.90/233.76. It was Garlits facing her in the final, and Shirley's 5.82/240.00 easily covered Don's 6.18/231 for the victory. Shirley won the 1982 WINSTON WORLD POINTS CHA/MPIONSHIP, becoming the first person in history to claim drag racing's most prestigious title three times. Low qualifier at Indy with a 5.570. She also met Lucille Lee in the first all-female final round in NHRA history, with Muldowney taking the win, 5.711 seconds at 233.16 mph to Lee's 6.052 at 207.85. Shirley's 5.711 to 5.794 win over Mark Oswald at 1982 Northstars was the quickest side-by-side run in history at that point. The 5.570 to 5.669 over Connie Kalitta at Indy 1982 reset the quickest side-by-side mark.

Notes: Photo from 1969 World Finals, Dallas, Tex. Confirmed 6.629/221.67 from NHRA US Nationals 9/69. | John was at Lions on February 9 for an eight-car show, but he had problems and his best of 7.79 failed to qualify. Wiebe won a sixteen-car show at Continental Divide Raceway on April 13. He ran 7.54 and 7.51 in the first two rounds before stepping it up to a 7.47 (Low ET) at 191.88 over Joe McKee's 7.66/183 in the semifinal. In the final he copped Top Speed of the meet as well with a 7.62/213.28 beating Doc Halladay's 7.89/207. Another win came at the Division 5 opener at Omaha Dragway on May 4, where he set Low ET in the first round, at 7.16 on his way to the final where a 7.22/198.22 beat Bud Dabler. Another win came at the AHRA Southern Nationals in Memphis on May 31. A final 6.95/221.46 won him that title. He qualified seventh at the NHRA Springnationals at Dallas with a 6.80/231.36 (Top Speed). He beat Tom McEwen in round one, with a 6.90/225.56, but he fouled against George Cox in round two. It was back into the winner's circle the following week on June 21 at Donnybrooke Speedway for the Division 5 race. Halladay fouled against him in the first round, and John ran an easy 7.39/163.93. In the semifinal, a 7.03/218.54 (Top Speed) beat Bob Stuart who got crossed up. He ran a single at 6.90/218.46 for the win when Norm Gingrass had blown his motor while winning his semifinal race and was unable to repair in time for the final. 15 cars showed up for the eight available positions at Oklahoma City on July 5. Wiebe not only qualified, but he made it into the final. A first-round 7.12 beat Jimmy Nix and another 7.12/201.34 beat Larry Brown in the semifinals. In the final, Wiebe's 7.14/221.12 lost to upstart Kenny Bernstein's slower 7.16 in Prentiss Cunningham's car. He suffered a rare first-round loss on July 13 at the fourth Division 5 race at Thunder Road Dragway in Denver. Mike Snively's 7.20/207 beat John's 7.35/198.66.

Notes: Chris started the '84 season at the AHRA Winternationals. A 6.05 qualified #6, and in the first round, he ran a 5.90/205 that lost to Frank Bradley's slower 5.96. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was the sixth alternate with a 5.917/229.59. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he had help from Sid Waterman and Ron Capps. His first qualifying pass was a 6.01. That was followed by a career-best 5.74. The third run produced a 5.75. Finally, a 5.655/249.30 qualified #8 and an opening-round 5.846/240.64 advanced when Jack Ostrander shut off. In round two, Gary Ormsby's 5.65/249 beat "The Greek's" 5.801/243.90. Still, the "Greek" moved into the tenth spot in the NHRA TF points standings with this showing. Chris qualified #10 at NHRA Columbus at 5.770/238.09. In round one, he beat Frank Bradley, 5.867/193.95 to 6.00/211, but shut off to an 11-second run, losing to Doug Kerhulas in round two. Chris qualified #8 at NHRA Englishtown at 5.698/241.28 but lost a close race to Gary Beck in round one, 5.61/251 to 5.688/240.64. Chris ran 238 at ADRA West Salem, OH, on July 22. He lost to Dick Lahaie in the first round. At Spokane on August 19, his 5.53/238.72 qualified second to Don Garlits for the ADRA World Finals. He then beat Arley Langlo and Frank Bradley to meet with Garlits in the final. In the final, Chris' 5.52/255.69 snagged the victory over Don's 5.63/254. He qualified #7 at Indy at 5.654/244.56 but fell off to a 6.366/240.00 that lost to Howard Haight's 5.81/226 in round one. That was the Greek's final NHRA national event of the year. At the end of September, he was at Acadiana International Raceway for the AHRA World Finals. It was another eight-car field, and his 5.84 qualified #4. George Tolon's 6.56 in the first round fell to the "Greek's" 5.92/243.24. In the semi-final, his 5.96/240.64 defeated LaHaie's 6.18/215. Once again, he faced Garlits in the final, but this time the finish was reversed when "Big Daddy"s 5.56/256 got the win over Karamesines' 5.71/243.24. His best NHRA times were 5.654/249.30.

Scott began campaigning a funny car and did not run any other races in Top Fuel on the NHRA circuit this year. | This photo is of the TF final round @ GVRC Sunday, 2/19/84. Gene Snow, driving his old '81 ACI car, is on a decent pass of 5.66 @ 245.90. Scott Kalitta is blasting out a 5.56 @ only 221.13 to crush Snow. Notes: Prudhomme started the '92 season at Firebird Raceway's test & tune event in January. On Friday, he and crew chief John Medlen brought their new Swindahl car and started the weekend with an out-of-shape, half-track pass. The run would have been a good one before Don clicked it was he stopped the 330-foot timers with a .22. They made more runs on Saturday. A half-track 5.50/182.29 was followed by two tire smokers. Then Prudhomme laid down a 4.99 at a track record speed of 291.07. Pomona did not go very well for the team as a best of 5.12/277.17 left them (third alternate) outside of the starting field for the NHRA Winternationals. Prudhomme did much better back at Firebird for the NHRA Arizona Nationals in February A 5.15/287.81 qualified #14, and in the opening round, he improved to 4.94/289.01 to beat Mike Dunn's 5.10/265. But in round two, the "Snake" overpowered the track and smoked the tires in a loss to Mike Brotherton. The next NHRA race was the Slick 50 Nationals at Houston. Don's 4.95/291.26 qualified #9, and in round one, he ran an even better 4.93/289.76, but it wasn't enough to beat Kenny Bernstein's 4.85/293.

Notes: Chris qualified #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals at 6.832/216.34. He had a wing over the engine (front engine and a separate entry?) He won round one over Paul Schoenfield, 7.53/203.16 to 8.09, but Kenny Safford got to him in round two, 6.91/212.76 to 7.29/214.79. That was the Greek's last NHRA national event in Top Fuel, but he ran his funny car at the Gatornationals. Chris also ran 6.595 at Long Beach and 206.89. | The original rectangular Milodon decal before the bowed shape. I remember the Milodon ads (and T-shirts at the track) in the Lions-era Drag News, with a hand holding a full-stack '92. Notes: Ed qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 4.86/294.50. In round one, his 4.87/298.50 defeated Scott Kalitta's 4.91/284. He had a close race with Joe Amato that saw both drivers run 4.86 (Ed at 298.01), but Amato crossed the stripe first. He qualified second at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where his 5.83/298.50 followed Cory McClenathan's 4.82/297. In the opening round, he was upset by Scott Kalitta. At Houston, he set a new track record 4.81 at 298.50 in qualifying #1 for the NHRA Supernationals.McClenathan fouled against him in the opening round, and Ed's 4.87/295.56 advanced. In the second round, Kenny Bernstein's car broke and slowed to 5.19/212, losing to McCulloch's 4.99/291.07. He then beat Doug Herbert in the semifinal with a 4.87/298.11. He faced Rance McDaniel in the final, and the two had a great race, with Ed winning with a 4.90/285.44 over McDaniel's 4.92/284. This was McCulloch's 22nd NHRA National event victory, stretching into '92; it was his fourth win at the last eight NHRA events. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 4.88/293.63 qualified #4 again and made his way into the final. He started by running 4.92/294.50 to beat Pat Dakin, followed by a 5.01/286.98 over a fouling McDaniel at 4.89/296. In the semifinal, he dispatched Mike Dunn's 5.07/276 with a 4.90/296.24. In the final, he faced Eddie Hill, and Hill's 4.87/286 got the win over Ed's slightly quicker 4.86/294.02. Surprisingly, he failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. His 4.98/291.35 was the first alternate, but when McClenathan crashed during qualifying, Ed got into the show. Amato smoked the tires against him in the first round, and McCulloch's 5.10/265.33 advanced. But in the semifinals, Ed smoked the tires and shut off against eventual winner Scott Kalitta. NHRA's next stop was at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals near the end of April. Ed qualified #8 with a 4.94/294.40, but he lost in round one to Dunn. Another first-round loss occurred at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. He qualified #3 with a 4.94/293.25, but his 5.08/253.60 in the first round lost to Tommy Johnson Jr's 5.05/290. He "only" qualified #15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals with a 4.97/282.04, but he improved to 4.93/282.04 in round one to take out Hill. An off-pace 5.17/221.79 in the second round lost to Dunn's 4.95/278. Then came the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. Ed's 5.02/288.46 qualified #8. Once again, Dunn stopped him, this time in the first round, where his 5.02/279 defeated Ed's 5.07/291.73. Twelfth member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club on October 15, 1993, with a 301.70 at Dallas. The 4.815 was the low qualifier at Houston Spring.

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Also, 299.00 at 93 Atlanta Southerns. | After being the other driver to run over 300 mph occasionally in '92, Kenny failed to break 300 even once in '93. It wouldn't be until Memphis in '94 that he ran that number again. But speed doesn't win races. Kenny's first outing of '93 was at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January. It was a rough weekend for him and crew chief Dale Armstrong. Dale was trying out a new cam and testing some new redesigned Dart/Sanchez heads. They made two passes on Friday, where he shut off early on one and banged the blower on the other. On Saturday, Kenny made an early shut-off pass before tire shake killed his second run. A third pass yielded a 4.98/271.65 with some burned pistons. Sunday was no better; a rod dropping 5.06/278.72 ended their weekend when the rod went through the block and damaged the frame. He started the NHRA season by stealing the headlines at Pomona for the Winternationals with his spectacular final round crash while running against Joe Amato for the victory. Amato got the win, but Bernstein got the "ink." Parts of the car stopped the timers at 5.08/221.40. The accident was caused by the engine blowing and throwing parts under the left rear slick. The tire blew, and Kenny lost control and crashed into the wall hard while on fire. He was OK, but the car was totaled. Earlier, he qualified #6 with a 4.89/289.38. A first-round 4.88/293.63 beat Don Prudhomme. In round two, a 4.90 beat Tony Pedregon's 4.99. In the semifinals, a 4.88/292.67 beat Doug Herbert's 4.95/295. At the NHRA Motorcraft Arizona Nationals, Bernstein's 4.91/292.49 qualified #6. In the first round, Jack Ostrander broke, and Kenny advanced with an 8.21/68.00. In round two, he lost to eventual winner Eddie Hill. He qualified #8 at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals with a 4.87/291.54, and in the first round, his 4.91/286.25 beat Shelly Anderson's 4.91/291. But in round two, the "Budweiser King" broke and slowed to 5.19/212.06 in a loss to Ed McCulloch's 4.99/291. The Gatornationals was the next stop on the NHRA tour, and Kenny ran 4.91/297.81 to qualify #10. Unfortunately, he lost to Hill in the first round. Bernstein attempted to qualify at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but his best of 4.98/288.36 left him as the second alternate for the eight-car show. He did much better at Atlanta, where his 4.87/297.42 qualified #3. A quick-leaving 4.94/293.35 beat Jimmy Nix's 4.93/277 in the first round, and in round two, both he and Pat Austin ran 4.93 (Bernstein at 286.54), but Kenny got the win light. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Hill's 4.89/290. It was then off to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. His 4.93/296.34 qualified #2, but he fouled against Herbert in the first round.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. Frank qualified #10 at the NHRA Supernationals and beat a tire-smoking Darrell Gwynn in the first round. A second round 5.07/273.14 beat Rudy Toepke, but in the semifinals, Cook smoked the tires and lost to Gary Ormsby. He failed to qualify at the Gatornationals, but was able to make the field in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals with a 5.27/265.48 for #14 spot. Another 5.27 in the first round, at 275.39 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.11/275. At the sixth race of the season, the Cajun Nationals, Frank set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.12/270.51. Unfortunately, he lost to Dick LaHaie in the first round. He showed that his qualifying was no fluke when he showed up at the Springnationals and ran a 5.08/279.41 for the #4 qualifying spot. Once again he lost in the first round, this time to Jim Head. He bypassed the Grandnationals in Canada, but was at Englishtown for the Summernationals. A 5.19/272.39 qualified #8 and he did beat Shirley Muldowney in the first round, but he hurt some parts while winning and was unable to run in round two. The next event was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. In the thin air, he ran a 5.40/259.51 to qualify #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Gene Snow that Frank lost. The next event on the schedule was the California Nationals. Cook qualified #10 with a 5.14/278.29. A first-round 5.19/269.62 lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.09/289. He picked up the pace at the Seafair Nationals, running a 5.06/281.51 to qualify #4. A first-round 5.07/283.55 beat Jack Ostrander and in round two a 5.09/276.92 beat Dennis Forcelle. In the semifinals, he slipped to a 5.22/275.39 that lost to LaHaie's 5.11/281. At the Northstar Nationals, he qualified #12 and he fouled against Muldowney in the first round. He managed to qualify at the US Nationals at Indy with a 5.10/277.17 giving him the #12 spot. He lost to Joe Amato in the first round. It was then off to Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. Frank used a 5.06/285.98 to qualify #10, but once again was stopped in the first round. This time, Gwynn stopped him with a 5.00/281 to Cook's 5.18/285.62.

Notes: Gordon Jenner's first entry into the top fuel wars came in the fall of 1966 when he partnered with Nick Kozak and purchased a Woody car from the San Diego team of Lechien & Drake. It was the first in a series of dragsters known as the Royal Canadian. A blown fuel burning 392 hemi was aded and Gordon was ready for some quarter mile action. A trip to Southern California not only showed what the car could do in competition, but also gave the team a break from the cold Winter weather. They raced at Lions and San Fernando with Kelly Brown driving. Satisfied with how they ran, the two headed home as the 1967 season was about to begin in the northwest. Springtime saw them run at Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, and Deer Park, WA. But along the way, a towing accident took place in Alberta on a road between Red Deer and Sylvan Lake that completely destroyed the car. Jenner was the only one injured, and as a result spent the next six months on crutches. - Bud De Boer

Notes: New car in April 1965. Ran 7.80 at Bristol Springnationals, 7.75 at Indy. The 208 at Richmond was considered the fastest in the sport for 1965. | At NHRA Bristol, Jimmy Nix entered two cars, the Carroll Brothers & Oxman car and his own dragster! He was low qualifier at 7.65/192.70 in the Carroll Bros. machine and went 7.80/202.84 in his car. He beat Danny Ongais in Round one with the Carroll Bros. machine at 7.56/195.22, but crossed the centerline and lost with his machine (avoiding what could have been a very interesting eventual matchup)! He beat Marvin Schwartz in round two, but lost a close one to Tom Hoover in the semis. Qualified # 8 and finished runner up to Don Prudhomme at Indy with best times of 7.75/205.94, but we need to verify which car that was. Assuming it was his own car. The new car in April reportedly had Jimmy switching to a hemi, but the NHRA reports from the Bristol event refer to his car as Chevy. We need to confirm.

Notes: Ruth started his '73 season at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32 car field, and his 6.19/222.22 qualified #4. He looked like the car to beat in round one, when he ran Low ET of the first-round with a 6.16/229.00 that beat Steve Carbone's 6.88/156 in Larry Huff's car. He also had Low ET in round two by over a tenth when he ripped off a 6.10/230.17 to beat Chris Karamesines' 6.38/225. Jerry kept up the pressure on the other teams with a 6.13/227.15 in round three to defeat Gary Egbert's 6.34/216. Don Prudhomme smoked the tires in the semifinal, and Ruth advanced with a 6.12/224.43. His final-round opponent was Don Garlits. He qualified #1 at 6.09 and had run as good as 6.19 during eliminations. Ruth definitely had the advantage. But Ruth was late in the final, and although he reset the AHRA ET record to 6.06 (speed on the run was 223.32), Garlits had got out on mine, and his 6.16/239 took the victory. That had to hurt. He then made the trip to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran 7.16/207.85 on the first weekend (February 3) of qualifying on the horrible track surface. That gave him the #17 spot in the field. But rain kept interrupting the race, and it wasn't run until February 18. His time had been bumped back to the #22 spot by then. He lost to Gaines Markley in the opening round of eliminations. His next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet. It was yet another 32 car field and his 6.40 qualified #2 behind Steve Carbone similar 6.40 clocking. Denver Schutz blew his engine in round one, while racing him and Ruth advanced at 7.10/223.68. In round two, he defeated Flip Schofield with a 6.66/227.84. In the third round, he got out of shape against Randy Allison and shut off. Allison won with a 6.72. The AHRA Northern Nationals was held at Fremont, and Ruth qualified on the pole for the sixteen-car show with a 6.31/233.16. He easily made it past the first two rounds before running into Garlits in the semifinal. The two had a great race that saw the "Old Man's" 6.27/232 beat Jerry's 6.32/231.95. To add insult to injury, Garlits went on to win by beating James Warren in the final. The following week(March 18), Ruth was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified in the unlucky #9 spot with a 6.22/236.88, forcing him to run low qualifier Carl Olson in the first round. Ruth ran well in their race, but his 6.24/229.59 fell to Olson's 6.09. In April, he was in Seattle for the Northwest Open. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.43/224 qualified #7. He improved on his qualifying time in round one, where his 6.26/227.84 beat Wayne King's 6.83/202. King got back in on the "break rule" and lined up against Ruth once more in the second round. Once again, Jerry laid down a number; this time, his 6.16/238.09 eliminated Wayne's 6.45/228 for good. But he slowed to a 6.46/229.59 in the semifinal that lost to eventual winner Don Moody's 6.51/222. He was back in Seattle in May for an eight-car show. He opened eliminations with a 6.16/233.76 to beat Ron Smith, and he got an easy solo in round two went Larry Kleinbrook broke. He faced Hank Johnson in the final. Ruth ran a 6.55/220 in the final, but he lost to Johnson, who was losing a blower in the lights at 6.48/205. On May 20, he scored a victory at the NHRA Division Six opener at Bremerton Raceway. An opening round 6.23/225.56 beat a tire-smoking Markley. Another strong 6.27/227.84 defeated Johnson's 6.52/208 in the semifinal. He faced low qualifier Herm Petersen in the final, and Herm "banged" his blower on the line, so Ruth got the victory with a 6.53/204.54. Not only did he win TF, but he also won the Funny Car eliminator at this race. World Champ 1973. Photo from the 1973 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park, where they ran 6.132/238.09. Also ran 6.12 at Ontario Supernationals 1973.

Notes: B&M began 1968 with the old Sam Vincent chassis that was front-halved by Frank Huszar. Ran 6.914 at Bakersfield 68. At the NHRA Springnationals in Englishtown set Low ET (6.65), but had tire problems in the final, losing to Garlits. Was #5 qualifier at Indy 1968 at 6.852, and Top Speed at 233.76. Also-229.59 mph at OCIR WCS points meet on 9/14/68. The Beebe & Mulligan car held the NHRA speed record at 229.59 mph from September 1968 until July 1970. Also ran four of the quickest 13 ETs and three of the fastest 13 speeds in 1968. In October 1968 they debuted their new Woody car at the World Finals and were runner-up to Bennie Osborn. These guys kicked, butt and they should have won a lot more races. Definitely on top of their game in '68. | Started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. John won his first-round race with a 7.22/216 over Danny Ongais in the "Beaver Brothers" car, but the team didn't last long after that, as their high horsepower combination was too much for the track. On January 28 they were at Irwindale for an eight-car show. Mulligan qualified on the "bump" with a 7.27/182.92 and in the first round, an off pace 7.51/160.42 lost to James Warren's 7.07/218. On February 4, John qualified #19 in the 32 car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.16/217.90. In the first round, John was caught napping, as his 6.96/222.76 lost to Mike Snively's 7.08/219 in the "Hawaiian." On March 3, the team was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. Mulligan lasted until the second round where a seven cylinder 7.21 lost to Marvin Schwartz. Tim Beebe got the horsepower to the ground during qualifying at the Bakersfield March Meet when John laid down a 6.91/231.36 to qualify first. He had Low ET of the first-round as well with a winning 6.94. But he failed to reach the semifinals. On March 24, Beebe and Mulligan where at Riverside for the HRM Championships. John lasted until round two before losing to the eventual winner Steve Carbone. The team got it's first win of '68 on April 6 at Irwindale. And they didn't even qualify. John was first alternate in the sixteen-car show, but he got in when one car fell out with problems. He made the best of it by running a first-round 7.00 (Low ET) at 222.22 over the "Beaver Brothers." In round two, he set Top Speed with a 7.03/230.16 win over James Warren. In the final he beat Ray Ayres for the victory. They were back at Irwindale on May 4, but in the first round, a 7.11/226.12 (Top Speed) lost to Bob Hightower's 7.09/223 in the "Mr Ed" car. Tim was having trouble keeping the big Hemi lit at OCIR on May 25 for a sixteen-car show. John advanced past the first-round with a 7.78/153.06 when Carbone broke in the "Atlas Oil Tool Special." But in round two, another sub-par 7.66/181.08 lost to Bob Downey's 7.25/202. At the AHRA Springnationals at Bristol, John ran two qualifying passes, a 6.94 and a 6.87/226.60 (Low ET and Top Speed) to qualify first. These were AHRA's first six second runs. In the first round, he ran another six, a 6.92, but he lost to Chris Karamesines' 7.04. The following week (June 17) the duo was at Englishtown for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.91/227.27 qualified #4 in the sixteen-car show. In the first round, he beat Tom Hoover with a 7.24. In the second round, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.65/232.55 over Ron Rivero's 6.99/216. He got revenge on Karamesines in the semifinal with a 7.00/216.34 beating Chris' 7.07/216. Tom McEwen helped John install some new tires for the final. Unfortunately, they installed the tires backwards and John lost to Don Garlits. Mulligan picked up another win on June 23 at Aquasco for the President's Gold Cup Championships. He beat Al Friedman in the first round, with a 6.97/210.76 then got a "bye" run in the semifinal. In the final, he took the victory with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.89/216.86 over Norm Weekly.

Notes: Bobby Tapia ran well at the UDRA Winter Championships at Lions. He beat Mike Sorokin, driving the "Surfers" car in the first round, and a quick-leaving 7.81 in round two beat Tom McEwen's quicker 7.62. He then beat Jack Williams and Jim Dunn to reach the final against Dave Beebe. Unfortunately, not only did Tapia foul, but he also lost a motor and had to settle for the runner-up spot. The team then borrowed an engine from Jim Brissette while a new one was being built and eventually ran a best of 7.23. Bob got a couple of runner-up finishes at Irwindale. The team was back at Lions on May 28 for a sixteen-car show. Unfortunately, Bob's 7.76/212.76 in round one lost to James Warren's 7.50/212.At the HRM Championships, a 7.72/202.70 qualified #28. He fouled away a 7.74/205.46 in the opening round against Rick Stewart. Also ran 7.76 at Lions UDRA Winter Championships.

Notes: Chris was running really well in '90. He qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.11/267.75. He lost to Kenny Bernstein in the opening round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.28/258.62 qualified on the "bump." You would have thought it was 1965 with the first-round pairing between him and low qualifier Jimmy Nix. Chris improved to 5.23/269.46, but it was not enough to beat Nix's 5.13/269. He was the fifth alternate at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals with a 5.24/272.72 best. Things went much better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.19/268.01. In the opener, both he and his opponent Bernstein smoked the tires. Karamesines' 6.68/217.70 got the win over Bernstein's 7.87/104. In round two, Chris was late off the line, and his 5.13/269.62 fell to Dick Lahaie's 5.14/268. He did not race at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 5.07/271.41 qualified #9. His troubled 12.06/98.62 in round one lost to Jim Head's5.13/270. Chris was the runner-up at NHRA Sanair this year. Number one alternate at NHRA Brainerd MN 1990 with a 5.305/262.85. The best NHRA national event ET and speed for Chris in 1990 at 5.028 at Seattle and 277.09 at Ennis Fall. Where were the 4.97 and 293.68 run? Photo from Indy 1990.
