Notes: Won Winternationals and Indy. Great year. | Don started the year at Lions on January 16 for an eight-car show. He failed to qualify, running a best of 7.99/193.12 that was good for third alternate. The next day (January 17), he was at Pomona for another eight-car show. This time he qualified, but in the first round, he fouled against eventual winner Norm Weekly in the "Frantic Four" car. Prudhomme fouled out in the first round, again at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.47, but his red-light advanced James Warren into the second round. A week later, on February 7, he was a happy man as he won the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. A 7.80/204.54 qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field. He soloed with a 7.87/173.74 in the first round, when Willie Redford lost fire in the "Carroll Brothers" car. Warren fouled out against him in round two and Don's 7.77/175.78 advanced. In the semifinals, Rick Stewart also fouled against him and Prudhomme ran 7.75/204.08 to get into the final. His opponent was alternate Bill Alexander who got into the field for Ron Rivero and made it all the way to the final. There, Ron's 7.92/198 lost to the "Snake's" 7.76/201.34. This was Prudhomme's first NHRA National event victory. The "Hawaiian" was at Kingdon for a sixteen-car show on February 21 and Don was running well, beating Tom Hoover in the first round, with a 7.73/201.78, but he failed to reach the finals. Riverside held an eight-car race on March 21 and Don ran 7.94/193.12 to win his first-round race. In the semifinals, his 7.96/195.64 lost to Larry Faust's quick-leaving 8.03/201. On March 28, he was back at Pomona for the big UDRA race. Unfortunately, an 8.01/187.50 in the first round, lost to Stewart's 7.85/199. Prudhomme set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Lions on April 17 for a sixteen-car show with a 7.78/197.80. He beat Frank Pedregon in the first round, with a 7.87/179.64 and a 7.80/198.66 in round two, beat Bob Downey in the A&W car. But in the semifinals, he fouled against Roy Thode. A best of three match race between the "Snake" and the "Mongoose" Tom McEwen was held at Lions on May 1. Don slept in the first race and his 7.56/204.08 lost to McEwen's 7.82/178. In the second race, Prudhomme evened the score by running 7.76/202.24 to beat the "Goose" who shut off to an 8.25/123. But in the final deciding run, once again Don was slow off the line and his quicker 7.62/203.60 lost the race and the match to Tom's 7.84/196. He won the Arizona State Championships at Beeline, setting Low ET as well at 7.60. Another win came on May 23 at the Fifth Annual California State Championships at Half Moon Bay. He qualified #4 with a 7.79 and advanced past a fouling Denny Miliani in the first round. In the semifinals, a 7.68/199.54 got him into the final against low qualifier (7.50) Kenny Safford in the "B&M Tork Master." The race never materialized as Safford lost fire and Prudhomme soloed for the win with a 7.75/203.60. Fontana had over 40 cars attempt to qualify for its Memorial Day Championships. It was a two-day show and on Saturday, May 29, Don qualified #1 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.70/203.60. He beat Thode in the first round, with a 7.57/205.94. In round two, he lost a motor and the race to Mike Sorokin in the "Surfers" car. The following day with a new engine installed, Don fouled in the first round, against Tommy Dyer. In June, Don was back at Fontana for a best of three match race against Sorokin. It was a good match with Don winning the first race with a 7.56/207.36 beating Mike's 7.78/202. The "Surfers" car won the second race with a 7.64/204 beating the "Hawaiian's" 7.84/190.26. But in the final race, Prudhomme won the match by resetting the track record to 7.46 at 206.88 over Mike's 7.77/203.

Notes: Frank was at Firebird for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He only made one tire-smoking, shut off 19.51 pass. Obviously, he failed to qualify. He then went to Pomona, where he showed how well he could drive. On a qualifying attempt, he broke a wing strut. He handled the car perfectly and brought it to a safe stop. For a lesser driver, it could have gone a lot worse. He repaired it and came back out to run a career-best 5.50/257.43 to qualify #10. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round against Gene Snow and shut off to 6.07/165.68. He was the first alternate at the NHRA Gatornationals with a best of 5.59/258.99, and a 5.69/253.09 was the second alternate at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where a first-round 5.78/249.30 beat Snow, but he lost to Darrell Gwynn in the semifinals. Frank did not race at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, but he went to Tulsa for its independent Springnationals. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 5.61 (Low ET) at 255.68 (Top Speed and a new track record). He and Dan Pastorini had a good race in round one, with Frank's 5.69/249.30 beating Pastorini's 5.75/250. Another close race followed in the semifinals, where Bradley's 5.77/213.27 beat Eddie Hill's 5.80/252. This put Frank into the final against Snow. Bradley got the victory with a consistent 5.63/252.80 over the "Snowman's" tire-smoking 6.88/122. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, Frank ran 5.57/254.61 to qualify #9. He improved to a new career-best 5.46 at 263.00 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Joe Amato's 5.34/275. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Frank's 5.48/251.81 qualified #5. A first-round 5.60/219.94 beat Earl Whiting, but a 5.61/218.34 in the second round lost to eventual winner Dick LaHaie's 5.38/262. He followed the NHRA Tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where a 5.56/262.31 qualified #7. He beat Don Garlits in the first round but broke and rear end doing it and was unable to fix it in time for round two. Shortly after that, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.44 qualified #8, and he ran 5.49/261.02 to defeat John Carey's 5.73/199 in the opening round. He ran his best time of the weekend in round two, a 5.42/261.70, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Darrell Gwynn's 5.38/264. His next stop was at Kansas City International for its Summernationals race. It was an eight-car field, and Bradley's 5.59 qualified #4He beat Ray Moats in the first round with a 5.61/263.15, and in the semi-final, both he and Snow ran 5.64 (Frank at 264.70), with the "win" light coming on in his lane. He faced Dan Pastorini in the final, and Frank's 5.57/261 got the victory over Dan's 5.64/247. Near the end of July, he went to Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. There he qualified #7 at 5.58/253.37. Most importantly, he made his first NHRA national event final since '84. In round one, Glenn Mikres 5.73/233 lost to Frank's 5.66/249.93. He then beat Bill Mullins' 5.80/233 in round two with a 5.65/248.41. He had a very close race against low qualifier Dick Lahaie in the semi-final. Dick smoked the tires but still ran 5.61/250 and lost to Frank's 5.62/249.03. He faced Amato in the final, and this time Bradley smoked the tires. His 5.71/246.17 finished runner-up to Joe's 5.47/251. He continued to lower his career-best, and it now dropped down to 5.36 at Brainerd. His 5.36/261.09 qualified #5 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. In the first round, he ran 5.47/257.28 over Connie Kalitta's 5.60/255. Unfortunately, in round two, a 5.44/259.89 fell to Shirley Muldowney's 5.38/270.30 cars were attempting to qualify at Indy, and Bradley's 5.34/269.46 qualified #6. Jack Ostrander was late off the line in the first round, and his 5.41/271 lost to Frank's 5.42/265.56. In round two, he ran a great 5.39/266.42 and lost to Amato's even better 5.37/273. Notes: Photo from the 1976 Popular Hot Rodding Championships, US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan. Shirley won the NHRA Springnationals. | Shirley started the '76 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where she qualified #3 with a 6.16. She beat Larry Dixon's 6.73 in the first round, with a 6.34, but in round two, Bob Struksnes' 6.43/224 beat her ailing 7.28/141.73. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, her 6.20/239.36 failed to qualify. On February 21, she was at OCIR's East vs. West meet. There were six cars there that made three runs each. In Muldowney's first race, her 6.14/199.11 beat Rick Ramsey who had a blower explode. In her second race, James Warren's 6.27/171 beat her 6.49/182. In the final race, she had problems and shut down to 10.50-61 in a loss to Larry Dixon's 6.26/233. Shirley ran at Famoso on March 7 for the Bakersfield March Meet, where her 6.34 qualified #27 in the 32 car field. Her first-round race affected the outcome of all the races that ran after hers. She lost her race against Jerry Ruth, and her motor let go and oiled down the lane. The track tried to "fix" it, but almost every winner after that came from the opposite lane. Not sure why, but Muldowney bypassed the NHRA Gatornationals. She was at Amarillo on May 2 for the IHRA World Nationals but lost a tire-smoking battle with Pat Dakin in the first round. Her 6.55 lost to Pat's 6.41. She competed at the IHRA Dixie Nationals on May 23 but failed to reach the finals. Then things began to click for Shirley. She went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, and everything went right. A 6.03/229.00 qualified #1, and a 6.07/228 beat Frank Holden in the first round. Paul Longenecker fell to her 6.03/240 in round two, and Ted Wolf driving the "Jade Grenade," lost to her 6.11 in the semifinals. In the final, she ran Bob Edwards, and she wrapped up the event with a 5.96/243.90 (Low ET and Top Speed) for her first NHRA National event title. It was an impressive outing. It was funny, though, when a week later, she went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals and qualified last in the sixteen-car field and lost in round one. The highs and lows of racing. Shirley did better on July 4 at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals. She enjoyed beating Richard Tharp immensely (no love lost between these two) in the semifinals with a 6.12/235.60, but she lost to Don Garlits in the final. On July 17, she raced Garlits in a best of three match at Seattle, in which she was not too happy that the "old man" won. In August, Shirley was at US 131, Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. 29 cars tried to qualify for the sixteen-car show, and she qualified #13 with a 6.20. In the first round, her 6.31/215.31 lost to Jeb Allen's 6.10/213. At Indy for the US Nationals, Shirley ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.89 to qualify #5 in the 32 car field. She improved her best to a 5.86 at 241.85 in the first round, while beating Don Reed. In the second round, Tom Kaiser's 6.11/236 fell to the lady's 6.05/241.28. In round three, Gary Beck dropped her with a 5.79/245 to Shirley's 5.97/233.16. At the next NHRA event, the Fallnationals at Seattle, Muldowney showed up with a new Attebury built car. She made an easy check-out pass of 6.34/159 then got down to business. A 6.02/242.58 qualified #9, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier James Warren. Shirley ran another 6.02 in that first-round race, but it wasn't enough as James took the win with a 5.89. Shirley ended the season by giving everyone a preview of what '77 was like. At Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, she qualified #1 with a 5.77/249.30 (Low ET and Top Speed). The speed was the fastest run in '76. Shirley ran 5.99, 5.87, and 5.84 over in order, Terry Capp, John Rodeck, and Dennis Baca to met "The King," Jerry Ruth in the final. Ruth was no slouch, running a best of 5.93 on the way to the finals. But this was Shirley's day, and she cracked off a 5.94 at a whopping 248.61 to take her second NHRA win.

Notes: Gene started the season on a sour note when he failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. He was experimenting with a two-stage clutch. In the '88 season, he ran as many as six-stage clutches to get the AFT high gear system to work. His luck wasn't much better at the second NHRA race of the year, the Supernationals, where a best of 5.14 was good for the second alternate. Darlington was costly for the "Snowman." He used up three engines throughout the weekend due to a fuel starvation issue. He was there for the IHRA Winternationals, where he set Low ET while qualifying #1 with a 5.18/252.80. Unfortunately, he blew his third engine on the line in the first round. He went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. During Thursday's first qualifying round, he blew the engine so violently that it blew both cylinder heads off the block, and the flying parts took a piece out of the frame. Gene just made the field with a 5.23 (#16), but he lost another motor in the first round, against Eddie Hill. He was runner-up to Connie Kalitta at the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham. A 5.52/256.49 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. Snow set Low ET in the first round, where his 5.16/265.94 beat low qualifier Jim Head's 5.24/271. He beat Richard Holcomb in the semifinals before his 5.35/246.68 lost to Kalitta's 5.19/276 in the final. In April, things started to go better when he ran a 5.14/269.54 to qualify #5 in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. However, he did still lose in the first round, to Frank Hawley. Another first-round loss came at the next NHRA event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, where a 5.13/255.02 qualified #8, but he spun the tires and lost to Pat Dakin. It wasn't until May 21 that Gene finally got a win light, and it happened at the IHRA Springnationals, where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.11. He beat Richard Holcomb's 5.28/258 in the opening round with a 5.21/243.94, and in the semifinals, he met Dakin, and once again, he smoked the tires and lost. The following week (May 28), he was at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.25/274.13. Gene beat Joe Amato in the first round, and then ran a 5.30/244 to get around a tire-smoking Kalitta. It was Dick LaHaie's turn to smoke the tires against him in the semifinals, and Snow's 5.16/274 got him into the final. In the final, Gene ran Hawley, and a 5.16/268.41 gave Gene his first win of the year. At National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #2 with a strong 5.03/287.53. He beat Chris Karamesines in the first round, before smoking his tires against Hank Endres. The NHRA tour headed to Canada for the Grandnationals, where Gene used a 5.30/273.39 to qualify #9. In the first round, an off-pace 5.75/185.26 lost to low qualifier Frank Bradley. He scored another win on July 2 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #3, and a first-round 5.30/261.32 beat Karamesines. In the semifinal, a 5.31/266.65 beat Dakin. In the final, he met a strong running Dennis Forcelle and Gene's 5.25/275.86 beat Forcelle's close 5.29/273. It was back to the NHRA fold the following week (July 9) for the Summernationals, where he qualified #7 with a 5.13/260.56. He again beat Karamesines in the first round, before he smoked the tires and lost to Darrell Gwynn in the second round. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Snow set a track record 5.20 at 253.87 in qualifying #1. He beat Frank Cook in the first round, but again smoked the tires to a second-round loss to Lori Johns. A 5.09/275.98 qualified #4 at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals on July 30. Unfortunately, he crashed during qualifying and broke his collarbone. The car was a total loss. Hard to believe, but he was back in a Top Fueler on August 20 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.18/273.39 and a first-round 5.11/282.92 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat Hank Endres. In round two, a 5.15/277.86 beat Forcelle, but in the semifinal, he ran a cylinder dropping 5.60/200 that lost to Amato's 5.16/277. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: Miliani set 7.91 record on 7/18/64 at Fremont CA. | Denny was driving the Masters and Richter car at Fremont on July 12. He qualified #1 with a 7.83/196.50, but hurt the engine and was unable to run in eliminations. Denny set a 7.59 track record at Fremont on August 16 in qualifying #1 for the UDRA Championships. His speed on the run was 198.22. A 7.97/187.88 advanced past round one, but in round two the engine developed problems, and he lost to the race's eventual winner Dave Babler. The team showed up at Fontana on September 26 for a best of three match race against Bill Alexander. The dragster was running a new 506 cubic inch Hemi, but after running a warm up 7.82/198.22, the motor expired and Denny was unable to run the match.

Notes: Shirley started her '77 season at Irwindale for a best of three match race against James Warren. She won all three races and reset both ends of the track record to 5.86/243.24. She did not go to Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, but she was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where she set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.85/248.61. Unfortunately, Muldowney had a distributor clamp come loose in the first round, and it retarded the timing, forcing her to shut down against Rance McDaniel. Her next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Once again, she had problems and in round two a broken magneto cap put her out of the running against Don Garlits. Shirley's early-season woes continued at the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.00 qualified #2, but she fouled against Clayton Harris. in the opening round. Things took a turn for the better in April. She won the NHRA Division 3 race at Indianapolis, and on May 5, Shirley went to OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race and won that too. She also set Top Speed of the meet at 253.52. Her next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was only an eight-car show, and she qualified #2. But in round one, she smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.85 in a loss to Marvin Graham. Everything went Muldowney's way at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. She set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.99/242.58. An opening round 6.12/234.37 beat Frank Bradley's 6.46/203. Jeg Coughlin crossed the centerline in round two, and she advanced with a 6.14/226.70. Garlits blew his engine in the semifinals trying to catch Shirley's 6.07/238.72. EnglishmanClive Skilton was her competition in the final and he was tough as he won his semifinal race with a 6.08. But Shirley ran a 6.11/236.22 to get the victory over Skilton's close 6.15/228. This seemed to be the turning point in her season, as the lady was tough to beat from then on. She won the third NHRA Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan. Things didn't start out so well when she fouled away a 6.16 in the first round, but Coughlin crossed the centerline and the first or worse rule held up and she was reinstated. Shirley set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 6.04/240.64 over Pat Dakin. She then faced Gary Beck in the final, and his 6.26/213 was no match for her 6.06/240.64 (again). The trip to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals was eventful as her race car transporter caught fire. It had to be towed in. Once there, her performance was great. She ran 5.78 and 5.77/243.90 in qualifying. The 5.77 qualified #1 and was Low ET of the meet. Once again, she battled her way to the final. A first-round 6.11 got around a tire-smoking Skilton, and in round two, a 6.05/243 beat Dakin's 6.15. Her slowest run of the weekend, a 6.25/216 advanced in the semifinals when Richard Tharp got out of shape in the "Candies and Hughes" car. This put her into the final against Jeb Allen who always ran good at E-town. Not this time as his car broke, and Shirley picked up another victory with a 6.02/234.37. The following week (July 17), she won the PDA Championships at Seattle with a 6.12/241 (Top Speed). The second PDA race was held at Fremont and Shirley set a track record 5.82 at 240.64 (Top Speed) in qualifying #1. She failed to reach the finals, but she ran well. Muldowney made it three NHRA Nation event wins in a row when she won the Grandnationals in Canada. Once again, she set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.93/240.00. She then ran 6.04 and 6.10 to beat Allen and Grant Stoms to reach the final. There she faced Dakin and he had problems and shut down to 7.14/137 while she motored to 5.95/234 for the win. Shirley was back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. a week later. Of course, her 5.83/227.84 qualified #1, and again she worked her way to the final. A first-round 5.88/244.56 beat Ron Correnti, and a 5.93 took out Dick Rosberg in round two. Shirley was "up" for her semifinal race with Garlits, and her 5.81/246.57 (Low ET and Top Speed) put the "Old Man's" 5.94/242 on the trailer. She was expected to win in the final against John Abbott, who had only run a 6.28 best during eliminations, but he grabbed a holeshot off the line, and his 6.10/231 held on to beat her 6.03/233.75. Another win came at the final NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend on August 21. She was the only five-second qualifier with a 5.92/243.70, and during eliminations, she set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.91/245.90. Shirley soloed in the final over a Larry Brown who had crashed in his semifinal win, but she still ran a strong 5.98/226.13. After running so well, the one race that had to bother her at the end of the year was the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis. There were 60 cars attempting to qualify for the 32 car field and Muldowney qualified #2 with a 5.88. That was good, but in round one, against Dick LaHaie, her transmission wouldn't shift out of low gear, and her 6.36/161 lost to LaHaie's 6.19/221. That was bad, packing up after round one. More problems came at the NHRA Fallnationals in Seattle. Her 5.93 qualified #5 and a 6.17/229.59 beat Rob Bruins' 6.30/225 in round one, but in round two, she shut off on the line with no oil pressure, giving McDaniel a solo into the semifinal. | I saw this world record speed run at OCIR on May 5, 1977. Shirley became the second Top Fuel driver to top 250 mph on the 253.52 and became the second entry into the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. Also 5.78/252.10 at AHRA Winters at Beeline, AZ. Also, 5.77 at the 77 NHRA Summernationals, which Shirley won. - BP

Notes: Shirley linked up with Larry Minor this year. Muldowney started her season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. She qualified #12 with a 5.13/281.16. In the first round, she improved to 5.09/270.27 to beat Frank Bradley's better 5.07/276. But in the second round, she smoked the tires and shut down to 12.46/80.60 in a loss to Gary Ormsby's 5.05/279.At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a great 4.97/269.54 qualified #3. Kenny Bernstein's 5.11/270 in the opening round fell to Muldowney's 5.05/262.31. In round two, her 5.01/277.77 stopped Darrell Gwynn's 5.11/270. She faced Ormsby in the semi-final, and the car went into a wheelstand, and she ended up crossing the centerline and was disqualified. Things didn't go so well at Huston for the NHRA Supernationals. Her 5.01/281.16 qualified #7 but a tire-smoking 6.59/207.13 in the first round lost to Tommy Johnson Jr's 6.01/267. The NHRA Gatornationals went even worse as she ended up as the first alternate at 5.25/267.45. Early in April, Shirley was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car field, and her 5.12/275.81 qualified on the "bump." Once again, tire smoke did her in as a 15.98/49.92 shut-off run in round one lost to Gwynn's 5.04/278. More problems followed the team to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. She qualified #13 at 5.13/278.66, but a troubled 8.55/98.46 fell to Bradley's 5.09/273 in the first round. Bradley got her again in the first round at Memphis, where she lost a motor. Shirley qualified #10 for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 5.16. She got past the first round at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.22/271.24 qualified #11. A quick-leaving 5.31/271 got some "revenge" on Bradley's quicker 5.27 in the first round, but she lost to Mike Brotherton in round two. She had another so-so run at Columbus, where her 5.24/267.30 "only" qualified #14 for the NHRA Springnationals. She upset Eddie Hill in the first round with a 5.26/268.89 before losing to Dick Lahaie's 5.19/270 in round two with an up-in-smoke 6.63/138.46. The next stop was the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. A 5.20/270.27 qualified #6. Shirley took out Paul Smith in round one with a 5.24, but another 5.24 in round two lost to Frank Hawley's 5.11. Shirley was used to running much better than this, and to add to her problems, the transporter was vandalized in the pits at Englishtown during the running of the NHRA Summernationals. She had qualified #8 with a 5.07/264.78 and lost to Bernstein in the first round.NHRA's next event was the Mile High Nationals at Denver. Muldowney qualified #7 at 5.42/228.19, but her 5.66/249.72 lost to Bradley's 5.56/253 in round one. Her best ET of 4.975 was at NHRA Phoenix. Shirley ran her best speed of 281.16 at both the Winters and Houston. We formerly listed 298 for Shirley this year. Can anyone provide any info on when she went 298?

Notes: Jim started a great year by qualifying #24 at Pomona at 7.045/210.77 but tossing out an improved 6.945/213.27 on a foul to John Wiebe in round one. He qualified #2 at the Dallas Springnationals at 6.64/220.58 and getting to the finals via a string of 6.70s, with wins over Tony Nancy, Billy Tidwell, Chip Woodall, and a holeshot win over Dick Rosberg in the semis, 6.76/217.91 to 6.72/214.28. Jim fell off to a 9.51 in the finals, and Bob Gibson claimed the win at 6.87/207. At the NHRA Summernationals in York, Jim was low qualifier at 6.724/220.04. He again got to the final, only to lose to Pete Robinson when he broke. Jim ran Low ET and nearly set Top Speed with 6.71/222.22 times on race day. rnJim qualified #8 at Indy with a 6.588/228.42. He then made it to another final. Jim started the day by beating Jim Walther, 6.576/223.88 to 6.77/211. In round two, his 6.60/222.77 took out Gerry Glenn at 6.70/187.11. He was half of the fastest side-by-side race in history in round 3, 2as his 6.595/227.84 defeated Marshell Love's close 6.621/227.27. Don Garlits fouled against Jim in the semis, setting up a final against Don Prudhomme, who had been running 6.40s all day. In the quickest side-by-side race in history, Jim lost to Prudhomme, 6.456/230.76 to 6.483/225.56. A dramatic crash by Nicoll in the final round was captured on film, including Prudhomme's emotional interview where he said he would retire. This played for years. Jim was back at the NHRA Supernationals in Ontario but did not qualify, finishing as the #11 alternate.

Notes: Bradley started his season at Tucson in mid-January for the AHRA Winternationals. His 5.95 qualified second to Jerry Ruth's 5.88. In the opening round, his 5.96 beat Chris Karamesines' late 5.90. In the semi-final, he lost to Gene Snow. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, Frank's 5.73/250.69 qualified #10. In the first round, Larry Minor's 5.40/248 defeated his 6.01/221.12. He did not compete at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals or Atlanta and Baton Rouge. He was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. The AHRA shows were all eight-car fields at this time, and he qualified #5 at 6.10/233. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Ruth. Bradley improved to 6.00/238 to upset Ruth's 6.07/225. In the semi-final, he lost to eventual winner Don Garlits' 5.94/236, which beat his off-pace,6.21/221. Shortly after that, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A great 5.64/242.24 qualified #3. But he slowed to 6.00/211.76 in round one and lost to Karamesines' 5.86/193. He then went to St.Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #4, and in round one, his 5.95/238 took out Dale Wilch's 6.25/218. He then set Low ET in the semi-final with a 5.76/236 over Dick Lahaie's 5.92/240. He faced Snow in the final, and Bradley smoked the tires to 6.02/231.37 in a runner-up finish to Gene's 5.89/240. He did not compete at the NHRA Grandnationals, but on July 8, he won the AHRA Grand American at US 30, Gary, Indiana. Three cars had qualified at 5.57, and Bradley's was good for the #3 spot on the qualifying chart. In the first round, his 5.58/252.39 beat Jack Ostrander. Karamesines fouled against him in the semi-final, and Bradley stormed to 5.53/255.31. The ET was a new AHRA record. He went up against Garlits in the final, and Frank was more than up to the task, as his 5.60/254.59 got the victory over Garlis' 6.13/175. The following week, he won again, taking the top honors at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Once again, he ran 5.57 (at 252.32) to qualify #3. He made only one qualifying run as only 12 cars had shown for what was supposed to be a 16-car field. He then took out Snow in round one with a 5.52, and in round two, his 5.66 beat Gary Ormsby's quicker 5.62. Gary Beck fouled against him in the semi-finals, and Bradley advanced with a 5.62. He faced low qualifier Joe Amato in the final, and Joe was the favorite to win based on performance. Bradley's car was the only one in the field running a Milodon engine and a conventional Spring-type clutch. But the two had a great race that came down to the wire, with Frank's 5.569/251.39 stealing the win from Amato's 5.57/249. The week after (July 22), he continued to show that he was for real. He was at West Salem's Dragway 42 for the ADRA Grandnationals. Only six cars had shown, and he qualified #3 at 5.6. He beat Ostrander in the first round before setting Low ET and Top Speed in the semi-finals at 5.62/253.52. Unfortunately, he was late off the line and, despite running so well, lost to Snow's 5.73/241. His next stop was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #7 for the eight-car field with a 5.77/237.46. In the semi-final, he beat Ormsby in round one before losing to eventual winner Connie Kalitta. In August, he was at Spokane for the ADRA World Finals. He lasted until the semi-final before losing to Karamesines. There were 24 TF cars at Indy attempting to qualify. Bradley managed to qualify #8 with a 5.65/250.69. In round one, he beat alternate Grant Stoms. In the second round, his 5.89 fell to Kalitta's 5.72. Frank's best NHRA times of the year were at the Summernationals at 5.569/254.95. Frank had a good NHRA season, but those were his best times and finish. Only six cars showed at the ADRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42, OH, Bradley qualifying 3rd at 5.70/246. In semis, lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 5.73/241 holeshot despite setting Low ET and Top Speed of Meet with a losing 5.67/253.52.

Notes: IHRA 1. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1978. Also 5.90 at 241.28 in an article. Won Indy 1978 with an eliminations best of 5.86/243. Number one qualifier at NHRA Winters at 5.777/245.90. Ran Donovan this year. Gary Beck was quoted as saying, "If he (Garlits) puts a Donovan in that thing, I'm going to put a train whistle on mine, to move him over at 1,000 feet!" Garlits had a great season in '78. It started early with a win at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.15 (Low ET) and then ran 6.23/221 over Jerry Ruth in the first round. He repeated those numbers in round two while beating Marvin Graham, and in the semifinals, Don didn't receive a time slip, but he was clocked at 238.72 (Top Speed and a new track record) while beating Frank Bradley. In the final, he faced Paul Longenecker, and Garlits stepped it back up, running a 6.16/236 for the victory. Don ran over 240 on several occasions on the NHRA trail, but no faster than the Pomona 245.90. We formerly listed 247.25 for this year. Did he do that on the AHRA or IHRA trail?

Notes: Don ran 5.87/243.90 at Fremont on 3/08/78. Assuming it was this car. Ran SR 23 and 24 this year. | Garlits showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with his new car and without longtime sponsor "Wynn's." He reset the track record to 5.777 (speed on the run was 245.90) in qualifying, but in the first round, he fell off to a 6.17/236 that lost to Richard Tharp's 6.05/243 in the "Candies and Hughes" machine. A win soon followed when he went to Phoenix for the Winter Championships. There he qualified #1 and went on to beat Rob Bruins in the final with a 6.05. The car continued to qualify well when at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet; he ran Low ET of the meet with a 5.85 to lead the 32-car field. He failed to reach the final, but the car performed well. He won his 17th NHRA National event when he scored a victory at the Gatornationals the following week. A 6.02/242.58 qualified #2 behind Kelly Brown's 6.00/235. These two would work their way into the final. Don's first-round 6.16/238 beat Frank Bradley, and a 6.19/240 in the second round beat his former crew chief, Ron Barrow. In the semifinals, his 6.21/234 beat Canadian Graham Light's 6.26/239. This set up the final between the two Donovan-powered low qualifiers. Kelly had problems and had to shut down while Garlits won with a 6.55/229.00. The following week he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he led the eight-car field with a 6.36/229. Unfortunately, in the first round, he was upset when Paul Longenecker's 6.37/219 put Don's 6.44/227 on the trailer. He was also upset at the NHRA Division 2 Opener, losing to Lee Weller in the final. Another runner-up finish came at the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. There, he and final-round opponent Jerry Ruth smoked the tires heavily, and Ruth's 7.62 won over Garlits, who finally gave up and shut down to 13.78. April was closed out by Don winning the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham on the 30th. It was a sixteen-car show, and Garlits qualified #4 with a 6.23/238.72. He beat Lou Novotny, Longenecker, and Dick LaHaie (in that order) before dropping Weller in the final. Another win came the following week at Tulsa (May 7) for the AHRA Springnationals. Don qualified #2 with a 6.51 behind Bradley's 6.42. It was an eight-car show, and they would work their way to the final. Garlits soloed with a 6.61/218.44 in the first round when Greg Brewton failed to fire, and, in the semifinals, a 6.41/229.59 beat Doug Kerhulas' 6.56/217. In the final, the "Old Man" stepped up and set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.34/229.59 to win over Bradley's ailing 14.03/96. Don's best NHRA times were recorded at the Winternationals at 5.777/245.90. | From Mitch Osika: This photo is from 1979. He had added aluminum extensions to the front fairing" "BIG DADDY a career pictorial Vol."2" is an excellent reference guide!

Notes: Earl qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.73/247.93. A 6.03 advanced past the first round when Dan Pastorini fouled. Unfortunately, he broke against Joe Amato in the second round. He did well at Gainesville, qualifying #12 with a 5.61/223.88. That was pretty good, considering 27 cars were attempting to qualify for the NHRA Gatornationals sixteen-car field. In the first round, Whiting slowed to a 5.91/209.30, losing to Dick LaHaie's 5.54/254. At the Bakersfield Meet in May, Earl ran 5.65/252.80 to qualify #4 in the eight-car show. He lost his engine on a 5.91/226 single in the first round when Ralph Pearson broke. Earl could not make it to the line to face Pastorini in the semifinals. Photo from Arizona 1987. Earl ran his best times at Ennis. Earl qualified #12 at the world finals at 5.607/254.38. He lost to Shirley Muldowney in round one. Photo from 1987.
