Notes: Runner up to Gary Beck at OCIR World Finals 1981. | Dwight was at Sacramento on June 27 for the NHRA Western Regional. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.92/229.60. Dwight beat Mike Palmer's 6.05/226 in the first round, with a 5.95/231.96 and a semifinal 6.03/192.31 advanced when Gary Cornwall broke a rear end. He was to face Jim Murphy in the final, but Murphy had blown his engine in the semifinals and was unable to make the final so Dwight soloed for the win with a 9.07. Dwight attempted to qualify for the eight-car show at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he was the fifth alternate with a best of 6.20/230.76. He also failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where his 6.13/223.43 was good for the sixth alternate. |

Notes: Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Chris was at Pomona for the Winternationals where he qualified #11 with a 5.68/242.58. He lost a blower in his first-round race against Joe Amato and slowed to a 6.55/151. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.68/237.34 qualified #15. A career best (to this point) 5.57/248.34 beat Bill Mullins in the first round, but it cost him some parts as he was unable to make it to the line to face Dan Pastorini in round two. Atlanta was NHRA's next stop for the Southern Nationals. Chris qualified #10 with a 5.70/239.74, but a 6.08/175.30 lost to Gary Beck's 5.62/253 in the first round. |

Notes: Also ran 8.01/188.66 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/64 in Top Fuel and is listed at 7.89/178 in Gas Dragster. Rick faced off against Jerry Baltes in a best of three match race at Ramona on May 17. He won the first race with an 8.17/195.64, but a quicker 8.11/195.64 lost to Baltes' holeshot 8.25/188 in the second race. The deciding round had Baltes win the match race with an 8.07/187 over Rick's 8.14/194.38. The following week (May 24), Stewart was at Ramona, where he ran 198.23 and backed it up with a 196.53. On September 26, Rick was at Fontana for a twelve-car show. He qualified #4 with a 7.97/193.44. A first-round 7.90/196.06 beat Herb Ries, but in round two, his 7.86/197.80 lost to Jeep Hampshire's 7.77/200. The next day, Stewart was at San Fernando. Only three cars showed for T/F. Rick ran 7.84/194.38 in qualifying and won the race by beating John Mitchell with a 7.75/192.30 in the final. He was runner-up to Tom McEwen at Fontana on October 24, and he was there again on October 31 for a sixteen-car UDRA Meet. He advanced past round one with a 7.77/194.80, while in round two, his 7.74/195.64 beat Roy Thode's 7.97/192. Unfortunately, Rick hurt his engine on the run and could not run Bill Alexander in the semifinals. He got a win on November 14 over an eight-car field at Lions. Rick's 8.22/189.06 beat Wayne King's 8.43/190 in round one, and in the semifinals, his 8.18/192.30 beat James Warren. He faced Bill Alexander in the final, and Bill pushed the light too hard and fouled, giving Stewart's 8.19/192.70 the win. The following day he was at Carlsbad for the track's first race. Thirty-three cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car field. Rick made the show, but both he and Jack Williams fouled in the first round, so both were disqualified. |

Notes: Tommy started the year at Bakersfield on January 2 for an NHRA Jackpot Circuit Race. He beat John Edmunds in the first round, with an 8.01/205.46. He didn't win, but he ran well. On January 9 at Carlsbad for another Jackpot Pro-Circuit race, he qualified #1 with a 7.57/209.30 and beat Mike Sorokin in the first round, with a 7.55. In the semifinal, he beat Bill Leavitt with a 7.52/209.78 that held for Low ET of the meet. In the final, he lost to John Mulligan's 7.59/205.00 with a 7.90/208.80. At the Santa Maria Fuel Fest on January 16, he qualified second with a 7.87/202.70. In the first round, a 7.76/177.86 beat James Warren's 8.01/190.00 in Jim Seaton's Chrysler. In the second round, he got a bye run and, in the semifinal, a 7.91/199.54 beat Ron Hampshire (8.34) in Ted Gotelli's car. In the final, he faced the Low ET (7.74) car of Bill Demarest and beat him with a 7.77/199.54. At another Jackpot Pro Circuit race at Pomona on January 23, he runner-upped to Bill Leavitt with Bill's 7.76/193.54, beating Tom's 7.79/194. At the NHRA Winternats in February, he qualified 24th with a 7.80 but failed to make it to the late rounds. The Bakersfield March Meet was run on the 5 and 6th. On Saturday, Allen ran 7.55/204.08 to beat Don Prudhomme, but in round two, his 7.69/199.10 finished second best to Mike Snively's 7.64/199. On Sunday, he again made it into round two. An opening round 7.92/183.67 beat Jack Ewell, who had shut down early, but his 7.69/203.60 lost to Snively's 7.49/195. Tom won again on March 13 at Carlsbad for a Jackpot Pro-Circuit race. He ran a final round 7.87/205.94 to win. He was runner-up to Danny Ongais on March 26 for the Riverside Jackpot Circuit race. A final round 7.79/201.44, lost to Ongais' 7.71/205. Another win came on March 27 when 17 cars showed for an eight-car field at Pomona. Tommy faced Tom McEwen in the final and ran a 7.66/207.36 to win when McEwen fouled. The roles were reversed on April 3 at Carlsbad for a Division 7 race when McEwen set Low ET (7.53) in winning over Allen in the final. Irwindale held a sixteen-car Top Fuel show on April 9, and Allen ran well enough to meet Dave Beebe in the final. Unfortunately, the two cars were lined up for the final when a circuit breaker blew out. Due to the late hour, the final was never run, and the two split the purse. On April 17, he was back at Riverside for another Jackpot circuit race. In the first round, Dave McKenzie failed to fire, so Tommy ran a solo, but, in the semifinal, he lost to John Mulligan's 7.80. Irwindale held another sixteen-car event on April 23, and a 7.90 qualified Tommy #10. In the first round, he fouled against Nick Marshall. He lost to Mulligan's 7.30/219.50 blast in the first round, at the Pomona Pro Circuit race on April 24. At Beeline's Third Annual Fuel and Gas Championships on April 30, Allen set Top Speed at 208.32 and won the meet with a final 7.95/127.97 when McEwen fouled. At Irwindale on May 7, he qualified second at 7.84 and ran a first-round 7.94/181.08 over John Mitchell. But a strong run of 7.65/200.88 by Snively in the Hawaiian beat Tom's 7.98/200.44 in the second frame. On May 8, another Jackpot Pro-Circuit race was held in Carlsbad. Tommy set a 7.52 track record in the first round, at 206.88 and went on to the final to meet Beebe. There Allen fouled away a 7.57/208.32, letting Beebe's 7.61/192.70 collect the win. Another win came at Irwindale on May 14 when he beat Jim Dunn in the final. Allen qualified #1 with a 7.57 that held for Low ET. Fifteen cars showed for the eight-car field at Irwindale the following week (May 21). Allen qualified and ran 7.78 in the first two rounds to meet Ongais in the final. Danny fouled, and Tommy took another victory with a 7.92/201.34. He was at San Diego for a best of three match against Lyle Fisher and Red Greth the next day. Ray Maurell drove their car. He won the first race with an 8.17/191 when Ray shut off, but in the second race, Allen shut off to 8.56/130 while Maurell got the win with an 8.16/189. Allen got the match race victory in the tie-breaker with a 7.77/200.89 over Ray, who had got out of shape and shut off. Irwindale treated him well as on June 4, he again qualified #1 with a 7.74 and went on to win over a fouling Steve Porter in the final. He was at Carlsbad on June 10 for an eight-car show but lost in the semifinals. The next day (June 11) found him back at Irwindale. He ran an 8.66/131.77 over a fouling Ron Goodsell in the first round, and a semifinal 7.87/194.38 beat Dwight Salisbury. In the final, his off pace 8.09/128 lost to Mike Sorokin's 7.63/206. He didn't win at Carlsbad on June 17, and on the 18th, he was back at Irwindale, where a 7.80 qualified #5. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Sorokin and beat him with a 7.66/177.86 over Mike's 7.87. In the semifinal, a holeshot by Ongais made his 7.58/199.10 a loser to Danny's 7.59/205. On June 19, Riverside held the HRM Championships. Allen qualified #22 with a 7.70/206.43. He stopped James Warren in the first round, but in the second round, John Edmunds' 7.49/205 beat his 7.54/206.42. He lost in the first round, at an eight-car show at Irwindale on June 25. Allen qualified #6 with a 7.70, but in the first round, he shut off to a 9.11/84.90 and lost to Ongais' 7.79/201. He suffered another rare first-round loss at Irwindale on July 9 when Mulligan ran a Low ET 7.44/205 to stop his 7.73/204.54. On July 10 at Santa Maria, John Edmunds' 7.63/209.30 stopped his 7.82 in the first round. He ran well at Lions for the AHRA Championships but failed to make the finals. He did make the final at Carlsbad on July 29 for an eight-car show, but Mulligan's 7.91/203 beat his 8.27/131.38. On August 12, he qualified #1 with a 7.74 at Irwindale. He ran Low ET in the first round, with a 7.72/208.32, beating John Harbert, but in doing so, he lost his motor in the lights and was done for the day. He had Top Speed (216) at Carlsbad on August 15 for an eight-car show and beat Bill Leavitt and Leroy Goldstein to advance into the final to meet the Low ET (7.44) car of Jeep Hampshire. Allen took the win. He won again the following week at Carlsbad (August 26). Once again, he met Jeep Hampshire in the final. This time, Allen set Low ET with a final round blast of 7.47/205.46 to cover Jeep's 7.82/201. He continued his winning ways at Carlsbad on September 5 by winning the Jackpot Circuit race. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.51/216.34 before dropping Leroy Goldstein's 7.71/210 in the final with a 7.76/208.30. Goldstein reversed the roles on September 15 when he met Allen in the final at Carlsbad for an eight-car show. In the final, Tommy fouled, giving Leroy the win. Not sure what car he was driving or if it was even the Allen and Huff car in these notes above. On September 23, for sure in the Allen-Huff car, he attended the final Division 7 race at Irwindale. In round one, he lost to John Edmunds (7.61/200.88) after setting Top Speed in qualifying at 213.76. On October 7 at Carlsbad, a second-round track record (7.36) by Leroy Goldstein (Crower & Blair) beat Allen. At Irwindale on October 15, he again lost in the first round, this time to Dominic Cardoza's 7.74/202.24. The next day (October 16), back at Carlsbad, he won his first-round race but lost a motor doing it, putting him out. He raced at the Irwindale Grand Prix on October 22, getting past a fouling Dwight Salisbury in the first round, with a best-ever (to this point) 7.39. He ran another 7.39 at 196.92 in round two to beat Jerry Bivins' 7.53/205. In the third round (32 car field), his 7.61 beat Frank Pedregon, but he lost to Beebe in the semifinals. On October 23, at Carlsbad, Allen's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 7.27/208.80 won, beating Ewell's 7.53. Finally! A first-round 7.28/201.78 showed his final time was no fluke. He made an easy run in the semis when Kelly Brown fouled in the Outcast. Tommy qualified #1 with a 7.38 at Irwindale on November 19, but he shut off on the line with no oil pressure in the first round. On December 26 at Irwindale for the UDRA Fuel Championships, Tommy qualified eighth with a 7.44/214.30. He won his first-round but lost to Mike Sorokin's 7.50 in round two with a 7.52/195.22. Blair's Engineering. First over 210: Tommy Allen - 212.76 mph national record at Carlsbad, California, 4/02/66, then 213.76 at Irwindale on 9/24/66. |

Notes: Marvin's luck turned around in 1980, and he set a new record ET at 5.683/248.61 at Indy and won Sanair with 5.777/247.93 numbers. He also was runner-up to Shirley Muldowney at Seattle. The team set Low ET and or Top Speed at several national events. Marvin ended the season as the Division 6 Top Fuel Champion and placed fourth in the NHRA driver points race. The team raced two cars this year. Low qualifier at Indy 1980. Low qualifier at Sanair 80 at 5.812/243.24. Ran 242.58 at Ontario 80. For sale ad claimed a 5.84 average ET for 1980. Marvin qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his 6.14/234.98 in the first round, lost to Richard Tharp's 6.01/246 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He was at the Bakersfield March Meet but failed to reach the finals, and at the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #13 and lost to Bob Noice in round one. He picked up a win at the NHRA Divisional race at Beeline, where he ran a final round 6.36/232.55 to stop Phil Lukens. On March 30, Graham was at Green Valley for the NHRA Division 4 race. He lost in the first round. The Marc Danekas team started to pick it up in April. At the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Fremont, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 5.86/240.64. He ran steady 6.0's to advance to the final, where he picked up to 5.92/245.23 (Top Speed) to get the victory over Noel Reese. At the second NHRA Division 6 race at Seattle, he again qualified #1 with a 5.99/240.00 in the eight-car show. A first-round 5.97 beat Doug Kerhulas' 6.28. In the semifinals, he ran 5.94/241.93 but lost to Jerry Ruth's Low ET run of 5.91/240. The third NHRA Division 6 race was held at OCIR on May 17, and Marvin ran 5.94/246.57 to qualify #2 behind Gary Beck's 5.89. Unfortunately, Graham had troubles in the first round, and his 6.49/238.09 lost to Mark Prudhomme's holeshot aided 6.69/190. The team continued to qualify well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where Graham's 5.95/240.64 qualified #2. In the first round, he had an engine let go in the bleach box and could not run his opponent Steve Stephens. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Graham's 5.89/240.64 qualified #4. He picked up to a 5.85/242.58 in the first round, to beat Kerry Sweigart, and in the second round, Beck's car broke on the line, so he soloed with a 5.94/239.36. But in the semifinals, he hazed the tires to a 6.02 that wasn't enough to beat Jeb Allen's 5.92. |

Notes: 322.58 at Joliet set Track Record. Also ran 322.42 0n 2/26/00 at Winternationals. Ran 4.587 319.14 on 8/18/00 (#1 Qualifier) and 4.597 319.60 & 4.585 318.69 on 8/20/00 to win Brainerd in last event in exide colors. Debuted ARMY sponsorship at US Nationals. Exide had announced a month before the 2000 season that they were going to pull the sponsorship of the team. After exide's lawyers realized that they would have to pay the sponsorship money whether their name was on the car or not they announced they reversed their decision. |

Notes: Pomona 5.973 was the 12th entry into the Cragar Five-Second Club. It was the #2 qualifier as well. Unfortunately, Dwight fouled against Don Garlits in round one. He also ran 6.288/222.22 at Indy 1974 (#29 qualifier). Dwight upset Jim Bucher with a massive holeshot in round one, 6.270/215.31 to 6.164/232.55. He shut off against Gaines Markley in round two. Those were Dwight's only two NHRA national events this year. He ran 6.10 at Pomona WCS. The photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. | Dwight qualified #11 with a 6.31/220.58 at the AHRA Winternationals, but he broke the engine and could not run; the first alternate, Dick LaHaie, replaced him. His 5.973/236.22 qualified #2 at Pomona, but he fouled against Don Garlits in the first round. He was the defending champion for the Bakersfield March Meet. But in '74, he failed to qualify for the 32 car field. On his first qualifying attempt, he broke a rear end. The race was postponed a week due to rain, and he ran 6.61 to qualify for the field briefly. On a last-ditch qualifying attempt, he threw a blower belt. Shortly after that (March 2, 3), he was at Irwindale for the Fox Hunt race. His 6.49 qualified on the "bump" for an eight-car car show. He and Gary Hazen had a great race in the opening round that saw Dwight's 6.42/226 defeat Gary's 6.42/222. He ran an easy 7.21/167.59 in the semifinal to beat a tire-shaking, Tom McEwen. Unfortunately, he lost to upstart Frank Prock in the final. He ran at Fremont on March 31 for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Dwight beat an out-of-shape Arley Langlo in the first round, but a 6.34 in the second round lost to James Warren's 6.26. On April 6, OCIR had 42 Top Fuel cars trying to qualify for sixteen spots for the AHRA Grand American. Dwight's 6.30 qualified #3. He made it into the second round before being beat by Dan Richins' 6.49. The NHRA Division 7 Opener at Pomona was an unusual twelve-car show. Salisbury's 6.10/233.16 qualified #3. He beat Bob Noice in the first round, with a 6.33, but he lost to Ray Church in the next round when his two-speed transmission failed to shift. Dwight was back at Irwindale for the third annual T-Shirt Night event. He qualified for the sixteen-car show, but he lost to eventual winner James Warren in the first round. He competed at the PDA Championships at OCIR but lost early. |

Notes: Danny started the season at Riverside for the KFWB Festival on January 1. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #8 with an 8.00/196.50. In the first round, he fouled away a 7.99/193.54 against eventual winner Jack Williams. He did much better the next day (January 2) at Fontana for the UDRA race. It was a two-day race run on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, he qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.78. Another 7.78 at 194.80 beat Bill Leavitt's 7.89/187 in the first round. In round two, he picked up to a 7.72/198.66 (Low ET and Top Speed) to beat Rick Stewart. In the semifinals, he eased it through with an 8.16/148.51 when Merek Chertkow fouled in John Smyser's car. In the final, he faced Tom McEwen. Ongais got the victory with a 7.80/192.30 over McEwen's runner-up 8.02/198. The following day, they did it again. Ongais ran 7.71/194.38, 7.75/193.54, and 7.72/196.50 over Doug Robinson, Jeep Hampshire, and Mike Sorokin to meet McEwen in the final for the second time in two days. Once again, the results were the same, with Danny getting the win, only this time the "Mongoose" fouled. He won at Carlsbad on April 24, earning the sit-out position for Sunday's final round by beating Bobby Tapia, Rick Stewart, and Mike Snively. In that order. He then went up against Dick Lechien in the final and won with a 7.55/207.36. Bucksdown 4 car. Also ran 7.59 at Carlsbad 4/25/65 (National Record) and 7.75 at AHRA Beeline 1965. | Photo: 1965 Hot Rod Magazine Championships, Riverside, after a 7.64/202.70 mph run - MB |

Notes: Won IHRA Dixie Nationals and World Nationals in 1977. Photo from 1977 IHRA Summernationals, Great Lakes Dragaway, Union Grove, WI. Won International Race in Santa Pod over Roz Prior with a 6.14/232. | This photo is actually SR22, not 24. SR22 had the aluminum extensions on the front axle fairing; SR24 was solid black V with "Big Daddy" lettering. Don ran best NHRA national event times of 5.803/247.25 at Indy. Where did he run 249.30? |

Notes: In 1981 we were low elapsed time during eliminations at the NHRA US Nationals at 5.7 (plus we won the race). Then we were once again low qualifier at the NHRA World Finals at Orange County with a 5.64 ET. In addition to Indy 250 (which was the 10th entry in the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel), we went 247.93 at Irvine, California. | John Abbott Former Coughlin '79 Swindahl. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Beautiful SPE, Hanna car. Hank won Top Fuel at the '69 NHRA Springnationals in Dallas. Beat Kelly Brown in Lou Baney's Ford in the final round. The first 32-car field in the sixes. Ran 6.97 in this car at the Bakersfield March Meet in 1969. Ran 7.14 at Riverside Hot Rod Magazine Championship. | Don Johnson's "Beachcomber" used an SPE 185" chassis. The dragster used a 392 Hemi built by Ed Pink. It was overbored to just over 400 cubic inches. The stock crank was cross-drilled and balanced by CT Automotive. M/T rods supported Forgedtrue pistons. Pink also did the porting and polishing of the cylinder heads. Racer Brown supplied the cam. An Enderle injection unit sat on top of a Larry Bowers reworked blower, which sat on an Edelbrock manifold. A Cragar blower drive was also used. The rear axle was a Mopar with 3.91 gears. | Hank was in Las Vegas for the Stardust Open on February 16. He beat James Warren in the first round but lost to John Mulligan's track record 6.85 in round two. He beat Don Cook in the first round at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.94/212.26. In round two, he fouled away a 7.12/198.23 against Jim Nicoll. At Riverside on March 16 for the HRM Championships, he qualified #25 in the 32-car show with a 7.14. He improved to a first-round 7.02/215.31 over a fouling Cliff Zink. In the second round, he ran another 7.02 over Jack Mitchell's 7.07. But in round three, he had problems and shut off against Don Prudhomme.; Photo: "Drag Racing Hero's: Dragsters" website - MB |

Notes: Crewmember Bill Pease's son had a Lions Drag Strip record holder jacket that cites a 6.61 ET at 228 MPH. That run likely took place in 1969 or 1970. We are listing it here as John was the known driver for 1969. Can anyone confirm that it was John who ran those times and not someone else? |

Notes: Atlas Oil Tool dragster set Lions track record at 6.63 on September 27/1969. Probably Gerry Glenn at the wheel. - Don Gillespie | Ran 7.11 at Bakersfield March Meet, 3/69. I have 6.61/209.79 bests for '69. Also 208.81 at Pomona Winternationals 2/69. | Glenn started the '69 season by qualifying third with a 7.43/214.78 at an eight-car show at Irwindale at January 12. He improved to a 7.39/213.76 to win his first-round race and in the semifinal he singled with a 7.54/193.96 when Wayne King failed to fire. That same problem got Glenn in the final when the Atlas Oil Tool car failed to start giving Glenn Woolsey the win. It should be noted that Gerry's car was still running a 354 Hemi at this time. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 7.07/208.81 qualified the team eighth. He made it past the first two rounds before losing to Jim Dunn's 6.97 in round three with a 7.12. A 7.20/226.13 was good for first alternate at the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9, but the speed held up for Top Speed of the meet. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he lost to Bennie Osborn in the first round. Also in early March at Fresno's Winter Race of Champions, he set Low ET at 7.05 before losing to James Warren in the final in a 7.21/217 to 7.30/192.30 race. On to the HRM Championships at Riverside on March 16 where a 6.96 qualified sixth. Unfortunately, he lost to Larry Dixon's 6.87/217 in the first round. He lost again in the first round, at the final OCIR All-Pro race on March 29 when John Mulligan's 7.06/222 stopped him. On April 26, OCIR held an eight-car fuel tournament. Glenn advanced past the first-round when Larry Dixon fouled away Low ET (6.74) of the meet against him in the first round. Lou Baney's Ford, driven by Kelly Brown, beat him in the semifinal with a 6.85/222 to Glenn's 7.21/215.30. He traveled to Irwindale for another eight-car show on May 3. Again he made it into the semis before James Warren's 7.23/171 beat his sideways, never say die, 7.73/197.80. A pattern was developing when, at Lions on May 10 for yet another eight-car show, he found himself in the semifinals. This time, the car developed an oil leak and was shut off on the line giving Dixon a free ride into the finals. Back to OCIR on May 17 for a sixteen-car show, he qualified #1 with a 6.90 (the only car in the sixes in qualifying), but he sheared a pump drive and was unable to run his first-round single and was eliminated. The following week, on May 24, he showed up at Irwindale for the Division 7 Opener. A 7.01 beat Rick Ramsey in the first round, but once again problems arose and the car lost fire against Dixon in the second round. |
