Notes: The team started the '73 season at Irwindale's Grand Premiere in January. Flip qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.50. In the first round, he beat Larry Dixon with an engine blowing 6.63. He was unable to return for round two. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, a 6.44/212.26 qualified #15 in the 32 car field. Schofield got to solo in round one, and he ran an 8.40/140.55 to advance. But in the second round, he had some problems and shut down to an 8.01/109.35 loss to John Stewart's 6.24/212. Pomona had horrible track conditions, and they could not qualify for the 32 car field at the NHRA Winternationals (7.57/205). But when the race was postponed twice by rain, racers Vic Brown, Clive Skilton, Dennis Priddle, and Hank Johnson, that qualified for the show, could not return. So Flip got into the program. Unfortunately, he lost to Howard Haight in the first round, 6.90/221 to 7.00/197. The team's next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet. Flip qualified #26, and in the first round, both he and John Wiebe smoked the tires hard. Schofield's 8.47 got the "win" light. Unfortunately, he lost to Jerry Ruth in the next round. A 6.267/229.99 qualified #14 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He beat Tom McEwen's 6.55 in the first round, with a 6.53/225.00. In round two, his 6.35/208 lost to Steve Carbone's 6.19. The team won the NHRA Division 4 Opener at LaPlace in April. Flip qualified #1 in the eight-car show, then beat Ed Kelly in the first round, with a 6.59/194 when Kelly's clutch locked up. In the semifinal, he ran 6.40/217.91 to beat Leroy Goldstein's 6.51/222 in the new "Candies and Hughes" TF'er. He faced Vic Brown in the Creitz & Dill car in the final. Brown had problems and slowed to a 7.34/124 while Flip got the victory with a 6.74/216.86. They also won the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Phenix City. There, his opening round 6.68/200.00 beat Donnie Plunkett and in the semifinals, he soloed with a 6.99/161.87 when Marvin Schwartz broke. In the final, Flip's 6.64 beat Clayton Harris' 6.65. The roles reversed at the second NHRA Division 2 race at Suffolk on April 29 when Schofield's 6.42/216.23 finished runner-up to Harris' 6.02/229. The following week (May 6), they were at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Flip qualified #7 with a 6.48 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he beat Chuck Turner with a 6.40/213.77. In round two, a 6.41/216.00 lost to Paul Longenecker's 6.21/207. Flip was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic, where he qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.46. He improved to 6.21/225.56 (Top Speed) in the first round, to beat Satch Nottle. Schofield's 6.31/210.28 beat Jim Grace in the semifinals and moved him into the final to face Ted Thomas. Flip got the win, setting Low ET on the run with a 6.20/218.44, beating Thomas' 6.43/223. Over 40 cars showed up at Muncie on May 20 to battle for the sixteen spots available for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Flip qualified #1 with a 6.70. In the first round, Schofield picked up the pace to a 6.45/221.67 in beating Chuck Kurzawa's 6.83/206 in Bob Farmer's car. The second quickest ET in the first round, was a 6.63 by Marvin Schwartz. In round two, Flip advanced with a 6.44 when John Hilton fouled. Once again, Schwartz was there winning his race with a 6.44. Flip ran Low ET of the meet in the semifinals with a 6.32 to beat a motor-blowing Dick LaHaie. Marvin repeated with another 6.44. In the final, the two met, and Schofield pulled out the victory with a 6.34/225.00 (Top Speed) over Schwartz, who fouled with a 6.70/219. The next stop was at Blaney on June 2 for the NHRA's third Division Two race. A 6.46/222.76 in the opening round beat J.L. Simpson, but the car broke a rear end in the semifinal against Don Powell. Flip then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, and while he qualified easily, he lost to John Stewart in the second round. On June 24, he won the NHRA Division One race at Maple Grove. He defeated Dale Thierer's 6.49/212 in the opening round with a 6.39/217.39 and a solo 6.56/194.38 advanced in the semifinal when Jeb Allen failed to show. He beat Nottle in the final with a 6.36/217.39. NHRA's next national event was the Summernationals held at Englishtown on July 15. Schofield qualified #9 there with a 6.26/230.76. That forced him to run low qualifier Bill Wigginton, who was now shoeing the "Candies and Hughes" car. He lost that race. He went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he failed to qualify for the eight-car field (second alternate). He got into the field after Charlie Moulder and Clayton Harris got their signals mixed up, and Charlie ended up hitting Clayton with his car and breaking his leg. Harris had already been qualified but could not drive, so Schofield got into the field as the first alternate could not run. It didn't do him much good as his 6.70 lost to Wigginton's 6.32 in the opening round again. Shortly after that, he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.54 best ended up as the fourth alternate. He made no less than seven attempts to qualify! He followed that up with a runner-up finish to Jeb Allen at the AHRA Summernationals at Dragway 42. Flip ran 6.20 at Maple Grove, 6.267 at Gainesville, 6.261/230.76 at Englishtown, 6.299/223.88 at Indy, 6.37 at Tulsa, 6.47/223.32 at Amarillo, and 6.151/206.52 at the Supernatinals (his best national event ET, but he could not show for round one and Frank Bradley took his spot). Did Flip run 6.14 somewhere this year?

Notes: Runner up at 1969 NHRA Nationals. Destroked iron Keith Black 426. Photo from 1969 World Finals, Dallas, TX. After Lou Baney's accident with the Folger Ford car at the PDA Championships on July 19, Brown was without a ride. Leland Kolb stepped in and gave Brown a job driving for him. They were very successful the rest of the year. On August 9, they raced at the OCIR Anniversary Race. Kelly singled in the first round, when Bob Williams shut off on the line and in a twin tire-smoking battle in the semifinals, his 7.01/204.08 beat Gary Cochran's 7.54. In the final, James Warren fouled away Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.87/222.77 giving Brown's close 6.88/204.54 the victory. At Indy, a 6.66/222.22 qualified #16. In the first round, Doc Halladay fouled against him. In round two, John Wiebe fouled against him. In the third round, Dave Powers slept against him, running a 6.59/225 that lost to Kelly's 6.71/210.28. In the semifinal, Jim Paoli's clutch exploded and Kelly was in the final. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme. Don ran a 6.51/223 for the win to Kelly's 6.78/205.01 runner-up effort. He won the Division 7 race at Irwindale over a sixteen-car field on September 14. He set Low ET and a track record, in the final with a 6.91/214 that beat Don Argee. And at the Division 7 final at OCIR the following week (September 20), he won again. A semifinal 6.79 over Dwight Salisbury stood for Low ET. In the final, a 6.82/222.22 beat Carl Olson's tire smoking 7.26/201.79. He ran the Irwindale Grand Prix on October 4 where a 7.09/172.74 got past the first-round. He singled in the second round when Pat Foster broke. Don Soltz fouled against him in round three (32 car field), and another foul by Dwight Salisbury put him into the final against Olson. This time, Olson came out on top with a 7.13/196 over Kelly's 7.28/216.34 in a tire-smoking race. A 6.80/213.27 qualified #6 at the NHRA World Finals on October 26. Kelly singled in the first round, when Ken Bernstein's engine wouldn't stay lit, but in the second round, it was his own engine that lost fire giving Bennie Osborn a single. On November 9, he suffered a rare first-round loss at Carlsbad for the PDA Race of Champions event. Salisbury's holeshot 7.71/211 beat Kelly's 7.55/209.78. He more than made up for the first-round loss by winning the next PDA Race of Champions event at Sacramento on November 16, beating James Warren in the final with a 6.75/209.30.

Notes: Hometown confirmed by Jeb on Summernationals TV coverage. Ran 5.89 at Union Grove. | Allen started the '77 season by running 6.02/238.72 at the PRO Winternationals at Beeline on 1/14/77, and then by winning the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson. He qualified #2 with a 6.29. Jeb improved to a 6.20/228.42 in the first round, over Bill Selley and in round two, a 6.25 beat Jerry Ruth's 6.31. He went up against Ruth again in the semifinal when Clive Skilton broke after winning his second-round race and was unable to run the semifinal. Ruth got back in on the "break rule." The two ran again with the same outcome; this time Jeb won with a 6.34 over Ruth's 6.38. In the final, Allen faced the Rodeck powered car of Rance McDaniel. Rance ran a 6.49/213, but Jeb took the win with a 6.36/213.27. He made the field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, qualifying #8, but he lost to Bruce Walker in the first round. His next strong showing came at Tulsa on May 1 for the AHRA Springnationals. Jeb qualified #1 for the eight-car show with a 6.43/222.22. He beat Dale Wilch and Frank Bradley to meet with Tom Dumbell in the final. Jeb got his second AHRA victory of the young season and set Low ET of the meet with a 6.33. Another AHRA win came at St. Louis for the Gateway Nationals in June. Allen's 6.54/218.98 qualified #3 in the field, but he improved to 6.45/215.32 in the first round, over Wilch, and in the semifinals he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.29/231.37 to beat Dumbell's 6.51/185. He had heavy competition in the final as he faced Gary Beck. Beck ran a strong 6.42/230, but it wasn't enough to stop Jeb's winning 6.34/229.01. A week later (June 12) he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.12/231.32 qualified #12 and in round one, a 6.20/229.59 lost to Pat Dakin's identical 6.20 at 227. Jeb then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he went on to win his first IHRA title. It took two weeks to run as rain postponed the race from June 19 until June 26. But for Jeb, it was worth the wait. He qualified #2 with a 6.05 just behind Paul Longenecker's 6.02. These two would work their way through the sixteen-car field to meet in the final. Allen was consistent, running 6.01/237 in the first round, to beat Paul Romine's quicker, but later 6.00/233. He set a 5.96 track record at 229.59 in round two to beat Mike Palmer and in the semifinals, his 6.03/216.86 took care of John Speelman. Going against Longenecker for the title, Allen ran 6.00/239.00 to beat Paul's 6.09/239. He was runner-up to Don Garlits at Martin, Michigan's Memorial Weekend race. He always ran well at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown and '77 was no different. A 5.85/229.00 qualified #2 behind Shirley Muldowney's 5.77. Once again the two Low ET qualifiers would meet in the final. Jeb had an easy 6.39 win in the first round, when Jeg Coughlin lost fire on the line. In round two, a 5.99/223 beat Ron Attebury's off-pace 6.46. In the semifinals, he beat Lee Weller driving the Jim and Allison Lee car with a 6.04/209. Unfortunately, Allen's car broke in the final, and Shirley soloed for the win with a 6.02/234. He went to Milan Dragway on July 24 for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 6.13 qualified #5 in the eight-car field, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Garlits. Jeb had a supercharger explode on the line and Garlits advanced with a solo pass of 6.05/232. His next stop was at Dragway 42 at West Salem, Ohio, for the AHRA Grandnationals. Allen qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.28/208.81. He beat Lou Novotny in round one, with a 6.29/221.13, but in the semifinals, he fouled against Bradley and shut off. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where his 6.18 qualified #5. The event was an eight-car show; that meant that he ran low qualifier, Muldowney, in round one. Shirley had been the only 5-second qualifier at the race and her 6.04 in their race put Jeb on the trailer. He had another first-round loss at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #4 with a 5.98/232.55 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he faced a poorly qualified (#12) Beck. But in their first-round race, Gary improved to a 5.97 to beat Jeb's 6.00. Allen was in a position to win the AHRA Top Fuel Points Championship, and he went to Spokane on August 21 to try to win it. Only seven cars showed for the eight-car field so qualifying was not a problem. In the first round, Jeb ran 6.26/222.76 to beat Jerry Ruth's 6.34/198.22. In the semifinals, opponent Maynard Garritty lost fire and Allen advanced to the final with an easy 7.00/129.31 run. He faced Beck in the final and Beck had been running well. He had set Low ET at 6.05 in his semifinal win. The two had a good race with Gary's 6.24/227.00 getting the victory over Jeb's 6.32/198.22, but Allen still had enough points to be awarded AHRA's Top Fuel Crown. The next event run was the NHRA US Nationals. It was still a 32 car show and Jeb qualified #9 with a 6.00. He beat Larry Bucher in round one, with a 6.10/213. Another 6.10 at 211 beat Garlits' 6.25/238 in round two, but in the third round, he broke, advancing Richard Tharp's 6.16/239 into the semifinals. The year was beginning to wind down, but he still had time to win the PRO National Challenge race at Union Grove on September 11. It was a sixteen-car show and Allen beat Skilton, Chris Karamesines (with a 6.03/225), and Ron Correnti, who shut off with a 5.96/223. He faced Bradley in the final, and he ran his best of eliminations, a 5.89/234, to beat Frank's runner-up 6.14/201. At the NHRA Fallnationals, a 6.00 qualified #11, and he fell off to 6.23 in a first-round loss to Graham Light's 6.11. He had a disappointing end to his season when he went to Ontario for the NHRA World Finals. His best of 6.03 failed to qualify for the race.

Notes: Gary Cagle's life is worthy of a movie or book. An L.A. policeman, he had been in a wheelchair since 1948 after getting polio. Before he got into his top fuel car, he had raced on the salt flats and dry lakes and raced a fuel roadster on drag strips. A member of the Gear Grinders, he brought out his A/FD with a blown '57 Chrysler motor to Riverside at an SCTA 1/2 mile drag racing event on Jan. 11. He called his dragster "Half Fast IV." He set an SCTA record for the half-mile at that meet with 172.74 mph. The next week he returned to Riverside for quarter-mile racing but was beaten by Chrisman-Cannon's Hustler. But he had caught the eye of Chet Herbert, and they formed a racing partnership. So with Cagle driving the Herbert Cam Special, They went to Pomona on Jan. 25, just the third time out for the car. Cagle won Top Eliminator and set a new strip speed record with 168.22 mph. At Bakersfield on Feb. 1, he clocked some best times of 9.21 and 175.78 mph. He was making the rounds of Southern California tracks. In mid-February, he broke a blower belt, sending him home after a 9.14 at 167.91 mph run. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he got the meet's Top Speed of 180.36 mph. He also was timed at 180.00 mph, being the only car in the country to have turned over 180 mph twice in the same event. At Vaca Valley, he set a strip record of 175.43 mph on Apr. 12. At Bakersfield on May 3, he was Top Eliminator runner-up with 8.86 and best speed of 178.57 mph. Interestingly, to cure his front end from floating around, he removed the front fairing and chained and wired a heavy floor jack to the front end to give it some weight. In early June, Cagle and Herbert towed their dragster to the first Drag News Invitational at Great Bend, Kansas. This was to have been the beginning of a cross-country tour to strips in Kansas, Texas, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Minnesota, and Washington. His first run off the trailer was a stout 9.24 at 169.81 mph, the latter a track record. While making his second run, he was clocked at 162 mph when he veered slowly to the right into the dirt. The car flipped end over end seven times. It was a horrible crash, literally driving Cagle through the seat. The vehicle was totally demolished. Cagle suffered critical injuries from the crash that kept him hospitalized for weeks. Bob Sullivan put Cagle's engine into his dragster, continuing the tour that Cagle was to have taken. Notes: Top Fuel Eliminator Runner-up to Garlits at NHRA Nationals, Indianapolis 1968. Qualified 6th at Indy at 6.882/222.32. On Sept. 22, Carbone was at Fremont for the PDA Championships. It was a 32 car field, and in the opening round, his 7.06/220.58 beat Kenny Safford's 7.24/217. In round two, he advanced with a 7.12/195.65 and another 7.12/208.32 beat Jim Davis in round three. Carbone made an easy pass in the semifinals when Tom McEwen fouled against him. He faced Bob Downey, driving for Leland Kolb in the final. The two had a good race, but Carbone's car was stronger, turning 7.04/227.84 for the victory over Downey's 7.18/216.

Notes: Photo from 1985 Nationals. After football, Dan called Bobby Rowe (who he knew from racing hydroplane boats) and the team bought the Frank Taylor Dago Red fueler, but sold to Eddie Hill. Bought the former Kilpatrick & Connell car from Gene Snow because the cockpit was bigger. Debuted at Bakersfield 3/85 with a 5.76/245 qualifying pass. Lost to Ron Smith in round one, on a holeshot with both drivers running 5.91. Crew was Bobby Rowe, Donnie Couch and Larry Cook. Set a top fuel track record 5.88 seconds at Houston International Raceway in beating Buddy Warren in a match race. Lost to Ernie Hall in round one, at ADRA Spokane, running 5.882. Dan's best NHRA times were 5.607/251.25 at NHRA Englishtown. | Chassis was a long-in-the-tooth Swindahl, first run brand new with Kilpatrick/Connell/Tharp in '83, then Gene Snow in '84, then the "Quarterback Sneak" in '85.

Notes: Qualified at Bakersfield March Meet at 7.03. Ran 6.725 at Indianapolis Raceway Park 9/69. | Maas qualified #1 with a 6.82 (Low ET) at 211.76 at the second OCIR All-Pro event on February 9. He slowed to a 7.27/171.75 and lost to Bennie Osborn's 6.98/220 in the first round. He also lost in the first round, at the Bakersfield March Meet when his 6.95/222.22 lost to John Mulligan's 6.88/225. At the Hot Rod Magazine Championships at Riverside, he qualified #24 with a 7.13 in the 32 car field. Once again Mulligan stopped him in the first round. On April 19, he was at an eight-car show at Lions where he set a track record 6.67 in qualifying #1. He also set Top Speed when he beat Larry Dixon in the first round, with a 6.77/227.48. Unfortunately, in the semifinals he got out of shape and shut off. He was at OCIR on April 26 for an eight-car show where a 6.93/213.76 qualified #6, but the run had hurt the engine and alternate Joe Lee replaced him in eliminations. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale on May 24 when he ran a 6.88, but lost to Kelly Brown's holeshot 6.94 in Lou Baney's Cammer. Butch took a big win at the OCIR Benefit race on June 14. He qualified #1 with a 6.97/216.34 and he advanced past the first-round when Glen Woosley fouled. In the semifinals, he stepped up to a 6.92/210.29 to beat Ron Goodsell's 6.98/188. In the final, he beat Sam Davis with Low ET of the meet, a 6.86/210.78.

Notes: The first car to use the new Ed Donovan Hemi. He was runner-up to Don Garlits's revolutionary new rear-engine dragster at the 1971 Springnationals in Dallas. John was also runner-up to Hank Johnson at the 1971 Supernationals in Ontario. Ran 6.530 at that race. Ran 6.493 qualifier at Indy, followed by a great 6.46/232.55 (Top Speed) blast that fell to Garlits' 6.32 in eliminations. In January 1971, set the AHRA speed record at 227.84. Ran 6.46 at Martin, Mich. | John started the season by debuting a new SPE-built car with a win at the first OCIR All-Pro race. He qualified #6 with a 6.77 and a first-round 6.88 beat Bob Downey in the "Howard Cam Rattler." In the semifinals, a 6.87/217.91 beat James Warren's 6.97/220. In the final, he faced #5 qualifier, Larry Dixon. Dixon fouled, and John's 6.88/219.51 took the victory. On January 10, AHRA held its first Grand American race of the year at Lions. Wiebe qualified with a 6.73 and improved to a 6.61 in his first-round win. He had trouble and shut off in the second round, giving Don Moody the win. John ran 6.93/191.48 to qualify at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, in the first round, he fouled away a 6.79/214.28. At the second OCIR All-Pro race on January 24, he lost in the first round, when his quicker 6.80/227.27 lost to Gerry Glenn's 6.84/206. At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.84 qualified #18 in the 32 car field. That set up a first-round meeting with the #2 qualifier, Don Prudhomme. John ran 6.92, but he lost to the "Snake's" 6.69. The final OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 27 and featured a sixteen-car field. John beat Gary Cochran in the first round, with a 6.68/230.17. A 6.73/231.36 (Top Speed) beat Dennis Baca in the second round. But in the semifinal, while doing his burnout, a rod let go, and he shut it down, giving Dwight Salisbury a solo into the final. Lions held an eight-car show on April 5, and he qualified #3 but failed to reach the final. He did reach the final at West Palm Beach on April 18 for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. John beat some heavy hitters on the AHRA Grand American trail. He took out Steve Carbone, Don Garlits, and Jimmy King to reach the final, where he had to settle for runner-up when he fouled against Jim Nicoll.

Notes: After being out of the sport for ten years, Dakin and Gary Rupp returned to the sport in a big way. At The IHRA Winternationals, the team qualified #5 with a 5.36/266.27. A first-round 5.49/264.70 beat Butch Blair and a 5.42/263.15 beat Don Kohler in the semifinal. In the final, Bob Strauss broke, and Dakin ran a 5.38/269.66 (Top Speed) for the victory. They attempted to make the show at the NHRA Gatornationals, but a best of 5.30 failed to qualify. They tried again in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and a 5.29/258.57 qualified #15. Unfortunately, they lost to Dennis Forcelle in the first round. The next NHRA event was the Mid South Nationals at Memphis, and once again, they made the show with a 5.40/271.41 (#16). Dakin broke in the first round, but still beat a tire-smoking Gene Snow. They could not repair in time for their round two match against Eddie Hill. Back to IHRA for the Springnationals at Bristol in May, they qualified #4 and beat Forcelle in the first round, and a 5.83/237.74 beat Snow in the semifinal when Gene smoked the tires. In the final, it was Dakin's turn to go up in smoke, and his 6.98/170.73 lost to Jim Head's equally troubled 6.90/143. At National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, a 5.22/271.57 qualified #15. Pat lost to Joe Amato in the first round. In June, in Canada, for the NHRA Grandnationals, a 5.32/265.33 qualified #10. Once again, he lost in the first round, this time to Gary Ormsby. Back in his own stomping grounds, the IHRA, Dakin had some trouble qualifying at the Northern Nationals at Milan. His best of 5.61/273.29 left him as the first alternate, but when Kohler fireballed an engine in qualifying, he could not run, and Dakin was moved into the show. In the first round, he improved to a 5.34/260 to beat Mike Brotherton, but in the semifinal, a 5.52/170.73 lost to Snow's 5.31/266. He attempted to make the show at the NHRA Summernationals, but a 5.36/271.32 best left him the fourth alternate. A big win came at the IHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis. There they qualified #2 with a 5.34/254.74. In the semifinals, he beat Chris Karamesines while setting a 266.95 track record. A 5.40/264.97 beat John Carey for another IHRA win in the final. | At the IHRA Loctite/Nationwise World Nationals, Dakin qualified #4 with a 5.336/267.06 & Drew #5 qualifier Jim Head in Round 1.
