Notes: Mind-blowing run at OCIR in February 1968. FAR below the existing world records. Car was using a lower than normal gear and newly designed M&H slicks. - National Dragster, 2/16/68 | Amazing run was six tenths quickest than the next fastest car at the event, a 7.16 by winner John Mitchell. Legit run? National Dragster reported that OCIR had "dual clocks," and it counted. | AKA Silver Fox.

Notes: Amazing (and frankly, questioned) 5.84 at Sacramento on March 23/1974, was 15th entry into the Cragar Five Second Club. Gary qualified #18 at Bakersfield for the March Meet with a 6.42. In the first round, his opponent, Frank Prock was shut off on the line with an oil leak and Ritter advanced, but in round two his 6.44 lost to Tony Nancy's 6.32. As mentioned, he ran 5.84 at Sacramento on March 23. Gary made it into the final there against James Warren, but his 6.35/225.00 got him the runner-up spot to Warren's 6.16/235. He was at Fremont at the end of March for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Unfortunately, he was late in the first round, and his 6.48/219.51 lost to Dwight Hughes' 6.67. DNQ at Indy at 6.333/230.17 and DNQ at Ontario at 6.062/218.97.

Notes: Irwindale had a big $$$ bounty on their head for them being undefeated for several weeks straight. They ran some legitimate 7.20s at many different tracks. But alas, they never toured and didn't get the fame they deserved. - Bill Duke | Confirmed 7.46/210.76 at Lions UDRA Winter Championships 2/11/66 and 7.58 at 205.94 at Bakersfield 3/66. Home-built chassis, per 6/66 Drag Racing. | It's hard to say who was the winningest Top Fuel driver in '66, but it was hard to bet against Beebe. Dave qualified fifth with a 7.82/201.76 on January 23 at the Jackpot Pro-Circuit race at Pomona. He set Low ET with a 7.59 over John Mulligan in the second round, but he lost in the semis. At the AHRA Winternats, he set Top Speed at 213.76 but failed to make it into the finals. He qualified #21 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.79, but he lost in the first round, to Ronnie Hampshire. At Lions on February 26 for the UDRA Winternationals, he ran a 7.46/210.76 (Top Speed) to qualify second in the 32-car field and went all the way, winning over a fouling Bobby Tapia in the final. On March 26, he was at Lions for a sixteen-car show. Dave qualified #1 with a 7.63/198.66 and ran 7.69/202.70 over Ken Safford (7.97), 7.74/203.16 over Dave Babler, and 7.74/201.78 over Bob Hightower in the semifinal. In the final, he met Nick Marshall, who ran a track record 7.41/199 over Beebe's 7.68/191.08. Ironically, the old track record 7.46 was set by Dave on February 15. He set Top Speed again in qualifying #1 at 7.62/211.76 on April 2 at a 16-car field at Irwindale. A first-round 7.63/211.54 beat Joe Shubert (7.72/199.24). In the second round, his 7.70/210.08 beat an off pace 10.64 by John Mulligan, but Danny Ongais stepped up in the semis to a 7.66/208.32 over Beebe's 7.74/205.46. The next day (April 3) at Carlsbad for the Division 7 opener, Dave ran 7.71/209.78 over Steve Carbone (7.96/195.22), an 8.08/193.54 over Roy Shoults, but he fouled in the semis to eventual winner Tom McEwen. He was back at Irwindale on April 9 and beat Mike Snively in the semifinal with a 7.62 putting him in the final against Tommy Allen. Unfortunately, a breaker went out, and the track lost power, so Tommy and Dave split the purse due to the lateness. He won an eight-car show at Lions on April 23, qualifying #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 7.43/213.76. He ran 7.50/211.76 and 7.53/208.32 before winning with an 8.01/130.24 when John Mulligan fouled. The following day (April 24), he runner-upped to Tom McEwen at Pomona for the Jackpot Pro Circuit race. He got past a fouling Ron Hampshire in the first round, with a 7.85/178.92, and he ran a second-round solo at 7.67/180.00. In the semifinal, he beat Chuck Griffith with a 7.60/208.80. In the final, McEwen's 7.61/204 beat his 7.64/208.80. As April came to an end, Dave tried for another win at Beeline's Third Annual Fuel and Gas Championships on April 30. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, a 7.67/180.36 beat Ken Safford, but while coming to the line to face McEwen in the semifinal, Beebe found himself with no oil pressure and shut off. He rebounded by winning an eight-car show at Lions on May 7. A 7.59/204.54 qualified #4, and Dave ran 7.57/209.78 (Top Speed) and 7.67/205 to get to the final. He wasn't the quickest in the final, but he got there first with a 7.70/208.80, beating Safford's 7.63/201 in Ted Gotelli's car. On May 8 at Carlsbad for a Jackpot Pro-Circuit race, he ran a 7.61/192.70 in the final to win over Tommy Allen's quicker 7.57/208.32. He won again on May 22 at the Division 7 race at Sacramento, beating Don Cook in the final. A week later (May 28), he won a big sixteen-car show at Lions. A 7.66/202.70 beat Frank Pedregon in the first round, while in round two, his 7.59/207.37 beat Mulligan's quicker 7.51/204. A 7.54/215.34 beat an ailing Safford in the semifinals, and he wrapped up the win with a final round 7.53/215.30 that stopped Rick Stewart's 7.63/210. The following day he won at the Santa Maria Jackpot race. There he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.92/202.24. He didn't do so well at an eight-car show at Lions on June 4. Dave qualified #2 with a 7.42/211.76, and a 7.41/210.76 got past the first-round, but in the semifinals, his car failed to fire, and eventual winner Al Freeman advanced. A week later, he was back at Lions, where he ran 7.79 to qualify #5 in the eight-car field. He lost to Mulligan's 7.51/187 in the first round, with a 7.86/167.69, but John hurt his engine and could not continue, so Beebe got back in on the "break rule." After that, he stopped Nick Marshall's 7.69/204 in the semifinals with a 7.60/207.85. But in the final, he fouled away a 7.78 and lost to Carbone's 7.70. Another win came on July 23 at Irwindale when he stopped Jeep Hampshire in the final. He fouled in the final against John Edmunds on August 14 at the Bonneville Division 7 race. Another runner-up finish came on October 7 at an eight-car race at Carlsbad. After running 7.54/201.78 over Dominic Cardoza (8.07/200.48) and 7.44/205.46 over a motor-blowing Ronny Graham, he lined up against Leroy Goldstein in the final, and he lost a motor while Goldstein won with a 7.39/194.80. The following day (October 8) saw Beebe qualify first with a Low ET of the meet 7.39 and then leave, not hanging around to race and just testing their new motor. They tested it well as later that day, they showed up at Lions and qualified #1 with a track record 7.12. He went on to run a 7.27/201.78 in the first round, and a 7.30/168 in round two. In the final, he faced Jack Ewell and lost, taking another runner-up finish. Beebe won again on October 15 at Irwindale, setting Low ET in round one, with a 7.30/208.80 over Goldstein and Top Speed with a second-round 7.40/215.30 over Rick Stewart's 7.83/203.60. In the final, he beat Cardoza. Another big win came on October 22 at the Irwindale Grand Prix. A first-round 7.37/183.94 beat a fouling Gary Cassidy, and a final round 7.59/200.80 beat Gerry Glenn. Pete Robinson's 7.27/203.16 got him in the final at the NHRA World Finals. Another win came his way at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale on November 26. He took it all, qualifying #1 with a 7.19, which held for Low ET. He then set Top Speed at 216 and won the meet. On December 26 at the UDRA Championships at Irwindale, he qualified fifth with a 7.39/217.38 and a first-round 7.47/198.66 beat Bill Alexander. In the second round, he lost oil pressure and shut off on the line, advancing James Warren. - Ron Howard

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 2002 visit to Don Garlits Museum, Ocala, FL. Tinker Toy VI was built after an earlier crash at Irwindale. Robinson then built Tinker Toy VII, which resulted in yet another crash, this one fatal, at Pomona Winternationals 1970. Don Garlits recovered the TT VI from a Sportsman driver and restored it with some original parts (drive train, engine front cover, blower drive, and injectors). Pete qualified on the bump at Indy 9/68 with a 7.045/223.32. AKA Crane Cams Spl. | Pete had another driver in his car early in '68. Not sure if it was Steve Carbone who drove this car to Low ET at 7.02 and a runner-up finish at the AHRA Winternationals or not. But when Pete showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he finally had his cast off his leg from the accident he had the year before. Once again, it may have been Carbone who drove but failed to qualify. Pete returned to the driver's seat after almost a one-year absence at the Stardust National Open. He qualified in the sixteen-car show with a 7.32, and in the first round, he picked up to a 7.15. A second-round 7.21 got him into the semifinal, where he lost to Tom McEwen. On March 3, he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. Robinson qualified with a 7.01 but lost a motor while doing it. In the first round, he won his race but lost another motor. He packed up and left after that. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Pete ran well. He qualified #10 in the 32 car field with a 7.02. He beat Joe Lee in round one, and in round two, he advanced with a 7.16 when McEwen broke on the line. In the third round (32 car show), he was caught napping, and his 6.99/218.95 lost to James Warren's 7.05/222. All the Top Fuel Ford cars(except Tom Hoover's) were having fits trying to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Springnationals on June 17. Robinson, as well as Don Prudhomme and Connie Kalitta, failed to qualify. He competed at the fourth NHRA Division One ran at Island Dragway on July 14. There, he set low Et at 7.11 and reached the final against Billy Nanson. Pete got out of shape and shut off, giving the win to Nanson at 7.84. On August 4, he was at Castle Rock for the High Altitude Nationals. It was a 32 car show, and in round one, Pete's 7.63/174.41 beat Osborn. He took it easy in the second round when his competition fouled. A 11.84/89.29 was all that he needed to advance. He also got an easy pass in round three when Jimmy Nix fouled against him. That trend continued into the semifinals, where Leroy Goldstein also fouled. Robinson faced newcomer John Wiebe in the final. It was a close race as Pete's 7.48/210 finished runner-up to Wiebe's 7.49/207. Pete ran a controversial 6.55 on August 9 at York US 30 for the NHRA Division 1 race. He attempted to back it up for an NHRA record but got crossed up and shut off to 7.06. Highly unlikely, as his 6.55 was not even Low ET because Ron Rivero ran 6.40 in round one, and Joe Jacono was credited with a 6.59 and a 6.60. As for the actual racing at the race, Pete got the "odd-lot" solo in round one, and ran 7.90/125.54 before fouling out against Jacono in the semifinal. As mentioned above, he qualified on the "bump" for the 32 car field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. In the opening round, his off-pace 7.64/125.34 lost to Marvin Schwartz's 7.44/218. Robinson was at LaPlace on Sept. 29 for a sixteen-car show. He qualified #5 with a 7.34/183. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.87/174 beat Floyd Head's 7.85/202. But in round two, Pete had his blower explode on the line, and he could only watch as Osborn ran 7.28 to advance.

Notes: Set National Record at 4.981 (low qualifier) on 9/3/89 at US Nationals (7th entry in the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel) before lowering it to 4.951 at 89 Keystones. Photo from Columbus 1989. Eventually went quicker at Ennis, but lost the record. Listed times from Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 1. Winter 89/90 has 286.53. This was to be Darrell's last full season driving a Top Fuel dragster due to the accident that happened in England in April of '90. He did well, finishing fourth in points in NHRA Top Fuel competition. New sponsor, Coors replaced Budweiser for the '89 season, and Gwynn would have been the first to tell you that things didn't go to well until Brainerd. There he lost in round two, but he ran well and the team left with smiles on their faces. They then won the next two races jumping up in the points. Darrell started the year by qualifying #5 with a 5.08/281.16 at the Winternationals and improving to a first-round 5.07/279.41 over Eddie Hill. Eddie would not have even been in the show after his blow over in qualifying, but the Gwynn team loaned Hill their shape chassis so that he could run. He lost to Frank Bradley in the second round. At Houston for the Supernationals, he qualified #2 with a 5.00/281.25, but in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Frank Cook. Darrell got it all together for the Gatornationals where he ran a 5.13/281.60 to qualify #5. He beat Mike Brotherton, Dennis Forcelle and Earl Whiting with a 5.22/265 in the semifinal. In the final, he was paired against Hill who had lane choice, but Gwynn prevailed with a 5.08/280.72 to Eddie's 5.11/276 for his first win of the year. After his big win, it was surprising that Darrell failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. At the fourth race of the season, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Gwynn qualified #2 with a 5.10/274.55. He set Low ET as well as a track record in the first round, when he beat Chris Karamesines with a 5.09/272.06. Unfortunately, he took a nap on the starting line in round two and despite a 5.14/268.65 he lost to Hill's 5.17/270. At the next event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, he qualified #3 with a 5.05/276.49. Once again he set Low ET and a track record when he beat Forcelle in the first round, with a 5.00. A second round 5.05/277 beat Endres, but in the semifinals, both he and Gary Ormsby ran 5.04's, but Gary got the win. It was on to the Cajun Nationals where Gwynn continued to qualify in the top half of the field. He ran a 5.24 for the #8 spot and in the first round, he beat Whiting. In the second round a 5.23/271 beat Forcelle's quicker 5.22, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Frank Hawley. The next race on the schedule was the Springnationals. Darrell qualified #5 with a 5.08/274.47, but he lost to Forcelle in the first round, when the "Coors" car smoked the tires. The tour shifted to Canada for the Grandnationals where a 5.28/271.00 qualified #8. He beat Paul Smith's 5.34/264 in the first round, with a 5.27/267.77, but in the second round, he fell off to a 5.34/243.04 that lost to Lori Johns' 5.22/272. At Englishtown for the Summernationals, Gwynn qualified #11. It was his worst qualifying position of the season. He did beat third qualifier Endres in the first round, and in round two Gene Snow smoked the tires against him and his 5.32/271 took the win. But in the semifinals, Ormsby beat him with a 5.18/281. The tenth race of the season was at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Gwynn qualified #8 with a 5.34/263.31 in the thin air. He beat Bradley in the first round, but lost in round two to Dick LaHaie. The California Nationals was the next stop and a 5.13/280.63 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot setting up a first-round race with low qualifier Bradley. In the race, Bradley beat him by a tenth with Frank's 5.06/285 defeating Darrell's 5.16/281.42. At the next event, the Seafair Nationals, Gwynn tied his worst qualifying position with a 5.17/276.07 getting the #11 spot. In the first round, Ormsby beat him with a 5.04/283 to his 5.19/259.59. By this time, Darrell and crew chief Ken Veney were both getting hungry for a win; it was now the middle of Aug, and they hadn't won since March. So they pulled into the Northstar Nationals a little more anxious to win than normal. A 5.18/270.35 qualified #3 and Darrell stepped up to a 5.12/275.98 in the first round, over Jim Head, but in round two he overpowered the track to a tire-smoking 6.45/147.37 that lost to Joe Amato's 5.20/275. Regardless of the rest of the year, the next race made the season. That race was the US Nationals at Indy. Darrell set a track record 4.98 in qualifying. It was his first pole of the year and it came with a speed of 282.48. He beat Robert Reehl in the first round, and in round two he got some measurement of revenge by beating Ormsby's 5.07/285 with a 5.04/280.72. In the semifinal, a consistent 5.04/281.51 beat Hill's 5.09/276. In the final for the gold, he met LaHaie and ran another 5.04/280.46 for his second win of '89. He didn't have to wait long for his third. At the next race, the Keystone Nationals, he qualified #2 with a 4.98/284.99. A first-round 5.00/281.86 beat Cook, and in round two, a 4.96/282.75 beat Head. He set Low ET and a track record 4.95/281.16 in beating LaHaie's 5.00/281 in the semifinal. In the final, he ran Amato and another 4.95/281.77 was enough to cover Joe's 5.01/285 for his third win of the year. The next event was the Chief Nationals at the Texas Motorplex. Darrell qualified #4 with a 4.96/286.25. In round one, he ran a 4.98/284.45 to beat Head and in round two, a 4.99/285.62 beat Cook. He made an easy run (?) of 5.03/282.66 in the semifinals when Brotherton broke to advance to the finals. In the final, he ran a strong 4.94/279.85 that lost to Ormsby's 4.97/291. He made the finals of the next race as well, the Fallnationals. Gwynn qualified #2 with a 5.07/278.37, but in round two he beat Ormsby's 5.16 with Firebird Raceway's first four, a 4.99/278. In the semifinals, he beat LaHaie with a 5.08/278. In the final, he ran Shirley Muldowney, and she got a slight holeshot and hung on for a popular win with her 5.05/275.48 beating Darrell's slightly quicker 5.04/278. At the season-ending World Finals, Darrell set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 4.95/285.98. He beat Brotherton in the first round, with a 5.01/282.75, but fouled away a 5.00/283.10 in the second round against Ormsby, bringing his season to a close.

Notes: Hank qualified #8 for the sixteen-car field at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals with a 5.71/248.75. A 5.72/252.59 beat Gene Snow's 5.82/234 in the opening round, but a second-round 5.79/251.46 fell to eventual winner Larry Minor's 5.78/251. He then went to Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Endres qualified #11 with a 5.72/250.69, but he lost to Don Garlits in round one. He really ran well in qualifying at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where he ran 5.52/259.74 for the #5 spot in the show. That was ahead of Gary Beck, Garlits, Connie Kalitta, and a host of others. Alas, in round one, Beck stepped up from his 5.60 in qualifying to run 5.49/257 to defeat Endres' 5.70/256.77. Maple Grove was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Keystone Nationals. Hank qualified #5 once again with a 5.45/262.31. He became just the fifth Top Fuel driver to run a 5.3 time (behind Beck, Garlits, Darrell Gwynn, and Eddie Hill) with a first-round 5.386/247.52 that beat Kalitta. But he smoked the tires hard in round two, and his 8.04/94.27 lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.64/255. At Texas, for the NHRA Chief Nationals, Hank ran 5.44/261.55 to qualify #7. He beat Jack Revelle in the opening round with a 5.56/260.34. In round two, a 5.48/262.31 defeated Earl Whitting before his 5.56/256.26 lost to Gwynn's 5.27/276 in the semifinal. Endres qualified #1 at Phoenix for the NHRA Fallnationals with a 5.497/250.08. Unfortunately, the car broke on the line in the first round against Hill. The NHRA season came to an end at Pomona for the World Finals. A 5.436/261.29 qualified #6. In the opening round, both he and his opponent, Ormsby, had trouble getting traction, and Gary's 6.39/203 beat Hank's 6.44/223.54 in a Top Fuel race similar to the1960ss when the Top Fuel cars blazed the tires the whole length of the track.

Notes: Ran 4.983 at NHRA Indianapolis on September 3/1989, to become the sixth member of the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel. Photo from Columbus 1989. Confirmed 287.63 MPH at Ennis Fall 89, but MPH from Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 1., Winter 89/90 listed 287.90. Where was that run? | The Miller American cars were owned by Dick LaHaie, not Larry Minor. Larry had the sponsorship deal and got Dick to run his car under the colors while Minor raced his own (ex Gary Beck) car and the funny cars. - Dick LaHaie, Racin & Rockin Radio, 2/24/14 | LaHaie finished the season third in points. I'm sure he went into the year expecting to win more than the three national event wins that he got. But it was still more NHRA wins than he had gotten in '88. The season started with Dick running 5.16/279.32 to qualify #11 at the Winternationals. He lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.05/288 in the first round, with a 5.09/277.43. At the Supernationals, a 5.07 gave him the dreaded #9 qualifying spot and setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Joe Amato which he lost. He qualified in the top half of the show at the Gatornationals when a 5.13 was good for the #6 position. He got past the first-round for the first time this season, but in the second round, he had a tire-smoking battle with Hank Endres and lost. Things had to change and they did at the next event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. LaHaie took the pole with a 5.10/281.69. He beat Frank Bradley's 5.23/277 in the first round, with a 5.15/282.92 (Top Speed). In round two a consistent 5.16/278.46 beat Frank Hawley and in the semifinals a 5.18/279.32 beat Lori Johns. He went on to take his first victory of '89 with a final round 5.13/281.77 over Eddie Hill's 5.19/267. The NHRA tour then swung to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals where Dick qualified #6 with a 5.10/284.18. He beat Kalitta in the first round, and a 5.08/284 beat Johns' 5.19 in round two. But in the semifinals against Hill, he had a strut that held the rear wing in place break. It unloaded the car and LaHaie did a great job in bringing the car to a safe stop. The sixth race of the season was the Cajun Nationals. Once again he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.24/277.09 setting up a first-round run against low qualifier Frank Cook. This time, LaHaie won the first-round race and in round two he left on Bradley and won with a 5.22/277 to Frank's quicker 5.19. He overpowered the track in the semifinals and smoked the tires to a loss against Gene Snow. A 5.10/286.07 qualified #8 at the next race, the Springnationals. He beat Paul Smith in round one, but in the second round be lost to Jim Head when they both smoked the tires. It was up to Canada for the Grandnationals in late June. He ran a 5.21/280.54 to qualify #5. A first-round 5.20/279.67 beat John Carey. He improved to a 5.13/282.13 in round two to beat Bradley's 5.17/279. In the semifinals, Amato's 5.25/268 fell to Dick's 5.14/279.58. In the final, he ran Gary Ormsby and a 5.21/274.55 was good for the runner-up spot to Gary's 5.15/278. LaHaie got his second win at the next race, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 with a 5.10/283.37 and took out Carey in the first round. In the second round, he ran a solo 5.19/275 when Cook was unable to show. In the semifinals, a 5.15/280 beat a tire-smoking Hill. In the final, he reversed the outcome of the last race when he met Ormsby. A final 5.11/282.04 gave Gary's 5.24/271 the runner-up spot. The thin air of Denver was the next stop for the Mile High Nationals. Dick ran a 5.26/270.51 in qualifying #4. He beat Mike Brotherton in round one, and a 5.35/244 beat Darrell Gwynn in round two, but in the semifinals, both he and Amato ran 5.22's with Amato getting the win. From there it was off to Sonoma for the California Nationals where a 5.06/283.64 qualified #3. He beat Lori Johns in the first round, with a 5.07/281.60, but he broke and was unable to run Gordie Bonin in round two. Dick was runner-up at the next stop, the Seafair Nationals at Seattle. He qualified #6 with a 5.09/285.53 and in round one, a 5.11/283.82 beat Bonin's 5.52. In round two, a consistent 5.10/282.84 beat Bradley's 5.19/278. A semifinal 5.11/281.42 beat Cook's 5.22/275. But even though he stayed consistent in the final with a 5.10/278.98 he lost to a strong running Amato at 5.01/278. At the thirteenth race of the season, the Northstar Nationals, Dick qualified #1 with a 5.12/279.85. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires to a 6.33/160.82 first-round loss to Dennis Forcelle. He ran Indianapolis' first four during qualifying, a 4.98/285.44 that eventually held for the #2 qualifying spot. LaHaie beat Pat Dakin in the first round, and in round two, a 5.06/276.20 beat Johns' 5.13/274. In the semifinals, a 5.01/280.72 beat a tire-smoking Amato. In the final, he ran Darrell Gwynn and he overpowered the track to a shut off 17.11/48.44 while Darrell took the win with a 5.04/280.

Notes: The Speed Sport modified roadster campaigned by Lyle Fisher, Gary "Red" Greth, and Don Maynard, one of the more popular cars of its era, produced record-setting performances from 1956 through the early 1960s. Powered by a 354-cid rear-mounted Chrysler Hemi, the 1,500-pound roadster stunned observers with a speed record of 160.14 mph at the 1957 ATAA World Series at Cordova, Ill., and finished the year with a clocking of 169.11 in Tucson, Ariz. Other records include an 8.03/175.78 in March 1960. A 180.72 was backed up by a 179.28 on October 2/1960. The Drag News 1320 Standard Modified Fuel Roadster speed mark was 183.67 eight days later in Alton, Ill. The Speed Sport roadster remained competitive well into the mid-1960s, qualifying for Top Fuel at the 1963 AHRA Winternationals and making its final appearance at the 1964 Bakersfield March Meet. Notes: First car over 260 with a 262.39 National Record at Gainesville in March 1984 (backed up by 260.11). Just beat Kenny Bernstein to the mark. Did it partially by coming out with a much taller wing than normal (AKA the Kareem Abdul Jabbar wing). Later upped the mark at the Summernationals. Also ran 263.92 at the Cajun Nationals in June 1984. | Joe started the season with a runner-up finish at the season opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #3 with a 5.59/254.23. In the first round his 5.61/243.90 beat Bill Carter's 5.71/245. In round two he ran a single when Chuck Haase broke behind the line. Unfortunately, Joe hurt an engine on the solo and had to replace it with a new "bullet" for the semifinals. There, he faced Don Garlits and Amato won easily with a 5.84/230.17 over "Big Daddy's" 6.01/240. In the final, he ran Gary Ormsby and the two ran a real close race with Gary taking the win with a 5.66/243 over Joe's hard charging 5.67/254.25. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals he made history with the sport's first 260 mph run. He started by qualifying #2 with a 5.53/259.36 behind Gary Beck's Low ET of the meet 5.47. In the first round, a 5.55/257.87 beat Carter's off pace 6.28. In round two, a 5.61/259.36 beat Chris Karamesines' 5.80/243. He broke the 260 mph barrier in the semifinals with a 5.58/260.11 that defeated Winternationals winner Ormsby's 5.66/249. In the final he met with low qualifier Beck. Joe got the victory and improved his Top Speed to a 262.39 at 5.54 in defeating Gary's 5.68/245. A new era had arrived. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Joe grabbed another win. It was an eight-car show and in the first round, he beat an out of shape Gary Read with a 5.56/255.68. In the semifinals, a 5.62 beat Shirley Muldowney's 5.72. In the final, he ran 5.60/259.36 (Top Speed) to beat out Dick LaHaie's 5.64/249. In May, Amato upped his speed to 263.92 at State Capitol Raceway near Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He ran that speed while qualifying #2 with a 5.53 in the eight-car show. In round one, he beat Danny Danell with a 5.65/257.87, but in the semifinals, he had a rear end break and he lost to Beck who went on to win the event.

This team was on top of their game in '67. As mentioned, the 7.37 qualified #11 at Pomona. James advanced past a non-firing Ron Rolstad in the first round, with an 8.05/159.01, but in round two his 7.48/209.30 lost to Jerry Ruth's 7.40/212. On February 12 they were at Irwindale for an eight-car show. James qualified #7 with a 7.30/204.08. He beat Gerry Glenn in the first round, with a 7.23/107.84, but as the speed attests, he lost a motor while winning and was unable to continue. Glenn got back in on the break rule and went on to win the race. Warren was runner-up at the first annual Stardust Open at Las Vegas. He lost in the final to Mike Snively in the "Hawaiian." He won the ninth annual T-Timers race at San Fernando on March 19. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 7.31 (Low ET). A first-round 7.48/212.26 beat Wayne King's 7.74/209. In the semifinal, he beat Larry Dixon in the "Fireside Inn" roadster. In the final, he ran a 7.37/212.76 (Top Speed) to win over Neil Leffler's 8.04 in the A&W car. On April 2, the team qualified #4 with a 7.56/206.42 at Fresno, but in the first round, the rear end let go. Warren and Coburn had a big day on April 16 at Fresno. They came off the truck and qualified with a 7.42/226.70. Before the end of the day, they hit 230.17 in eliminations. Unfortunately, they didn't win as Warren fouled out of competition. Lions held an eight-car show on April 22 and Warren set Top Speed of the meet at 223.88 during qualifying. In the first round, he beat Ron Hampshire with a 7.61/217.38. James lost in the semifinal to Bob Mayer. They finished runner-up at an eight-car show at Irwindale on May 13. James qualified #1 with a 7.19, and he beat Steve Carbone's 7.37 in the first round, with a 7.26/222.22. In the semifinal, he set a 224.42 track record while beating Tom Toler. He lost to Mike Sorokin in the "Hawaiian II" in the final. He was runner-up again at Irwindale the following week (May 20). He got to the final of the eight-car show by running 7.35/207.36 over the Doss Brothers and 7.39/201.78 over Bob Mayer's 7.59/194. A red light ended his run in the final against Jeep Hampshire. On June 10, they were at Lions for an eight-car show. A 7.18 qualified #1 and a 7.09 (Low ET) at 217.99 won his first-round race, but they broke and were unable to run in the semifinal. Breakage was a problem for the team as they once again ran well at Lions on June 24. It was another eight-car show and in the first round, James ran 7.26/221.66 to win, but in the semifinal, he lost a motor and the race. Irwindale held a sixteen-car show on July 8. Warren beat Leroy Goldstein in the first round, with a 7.27/221.66, but in the second round, his 7.76/150.50 lost to Jim Dunn's 7.37/219. On July 29, James set a new track record 6.96 at Irwindale. He won an eight-car event at OCIR on August 12. A final round 7.14/218.96 beat Dave Beebe in the final. At the NHRA US Nationals, they qualified #4 with a 6.87/222.76. James made it all the way to the finals of the 32 car show before losing to Don Garlits' 6.77/220 in the final with a 6.95/222.71. I'm sure that they felt a little better the following week (September 9) after Indy when they ran at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale. They qualified for the show with a 7.25/219.50 (Top Speed). James won his first-round race with a 7.14 (Low ET) at 219.50 (again). A second round 7.28/206.88 beat Bob Hightower and a semifinal 7.41/180.72 took care of Ray Ayres. In the final, he won the event with a 7.31/201.34 over Jim Nicoll. Another win came their way at the final NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale on September 30. There they qualified #2 with a 6.99/227.84 (Top Speed). John Mulligan was first with a 6.96. They both made their way to the final. James got to the final by running 6.93/227.26 in the first round, over Mayer, a second round 6.89 (Low ET) at 227.26 over a fouling Goldstein. In the semifinal, a 6.99/204.54 beat Don Prudhomme. In the final, he beat Mulligan for the title. At Irwindale's second annual Grand Prix, the Warren and Coburn team looked like they were on their way to another win. They qualified #1 with a 6.89 in the 32 car field. He had two easy rounds before running a 7.03/221.12 over Ray Ayres' 7.16/218 in the third round. In the semifinal, he set a new track ET record at 6.78 at 221.66. But in the final, Bobby Tapia ran a 7.00/226 to beat Warren. They were at Lions for the Drag News All-Pro Race on October 21. It was another 32 car show. In the first round, James ran 6. 94/210.28 to beat Beebe's 7.38. In the second round, a 7.13/184.41 beat the "Mr. Ed" car. He took out Tom McEwen in the third round with a 6.89/218.44. But in the semifinal, he lost to Mulligan. Irwindale held a sixteen-car show on November 4, where almost 40 cars attempted to qualify. Warren qualified #1 at 6.93/227.84. He worked his way to the final by running 7.25/225.56 over a fouling Bob Downey, a 6.95/202.23 advanced past round two and a semifinal 7.19/225 got him into the final. In the final, he faced McEwen who was using a Tim Beebe built 392 Hemi for this meet. Tom ran a 7.21/221 in the final, but he lost to Warren's Low ET and Top Speed blast of 6.91/229. As the year was coming to an end, Warren made an attempt for another win on December 17 at OCIR. He qualified #2 with a 7.00/221.12, but failed to reach the final.

Notes: Run at the first fuel car match race at the Motorplex (before the national event) on a green track in August, no less. At the time, it was the fifth-quickest run in Top Fuel history. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Eddie attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his 5.82/249.30 best was good for the second alternate spot. He was in the same boat at Gainesville and Atlanta when his 6.00/245.36 failed to qualify for the NHRA Gatornationals, and a best of 5.85/252.38 (first alternate) failed to make the show at the NHRA Southern Nationals. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals early in June, he qualified on the "bump" with a 5.78/249.72. Hill had problems in the first round and shut off to an 11.75/68.99 loss to Gene Snow's 5.71/228. That seemed to open the door for Eddie as he qualified #9 at the next NHRA race, the Springnationals, with a 5.61/248.20. He lost to low qualifier Gary Ormsby's 5.64/256 in the first round, with a 5.66/217.97. He didn't go to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals but was back on the tour at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.53/254.81. Eddie qualified #8 at the World Finals at 5.496/261.24, but he was upset by Ed Moore in round one, 5.72/246 to 5.86/245.
