Notes: Baca started the season by winning the Fremont New Year's race on January 2. He qualified #1 with a 6.44 and beat a fouling Dwight Hughes in the first round, with a 6.60. He had another easy run in the semis when Flip Schofield fouled, but he beat Gary Ormsby with a 6.43 track record in the final. He didn't do quite as well on January 28 at the Lions Grand Premiere, as a 6.47/229.59 lost to James Warren's 6.44/231 in the first round. Dennis ran well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.51/231.95 (Top Speed). He ran 6.50, followed by an easy single, a 6.56/231.95, and a 6.73 to make the final over, in order, Hank Johnson, Frank Bradley, Don Moody, and Dale Funk. In the final, he smoked the tires to a 7.33/214.79 that finished second best to Carl Olson's 6.74/219. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #3 with a 6.65. Unfortunately, he lost the race against Dwight Salisbury when his motor blew at half-track in the first round. He ran well at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, going all the way to the semifinals before Don Garlits beat him with 6.18/236.22 times. Dennis still ran a 6.4, but it paled compared to Don's run. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Irwindale's NHRA Division 7 Opener with a 6.38 but failed to reach the finals. Dennis ran his best ET of the year at 6.14 at the Last Drag Race, Long Beach, CA, 12/02/72. He ran 6.297/229.59 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge (runner-up to Moody). Also ran 6.175/230.76 at Ontario 1972 and 6.16 at Lions WCS 72, which was half of the quickest side by side run in history (Don Moody 6.13). AKA Carpetbagger. |

Notes: Kalitta was at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 5.73/230.76, and in the first round, a costly 5.68/241.93 beat Gene Snow. It was costly as he had blackened a crank and changed engines for his semifinal race. His 5.77/242.58 lost to eventual winner Bill Mullins' quick-leaving 5.79/255. Conrad started the NHRA season by qualifying #6 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.50/261.62. He improved to career bests (to this point) of 5.42/267.06 in the first round to beat Don Durbin's 5.73/233. In the second round, Gary Beck smoked the tires against him, and Kalitta moved on with a 5.52/253.52. He took out Joe Amato in the semifinals with a 5.54/265.48 to Joe's 5.59/260. This put him into the final with Darrell Gwynn. Connie slowed to 5.72/209.79, while Gwynn got his first NHRA Top Fuel win with a 5.46/257. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he again qualified #6; this time, a 5.57/263.62 got him the spot. A 5.50/257.58 beat Gary Ormsby's 5.69/215 in the first round, but in round two, his 5.60/255.24 lost to Gary Beck's holeshot aided 5.63/257. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Kalitta was slightly off in qualifying when he ran 5.67/243.11 for the #9 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Amato. Sure enough, Amato's 5.61/253 beat Kalitta's 5.69/256.41. He qualified much better at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where a 5.52/254.30 qualified #2. Unfortunately, he lost to Ormsby's 5.57/251 in the first round, with an off-pace,6.00/182.77. Things all fell into place at the NHRA Springnationals. There, he qualified #5 with a 5.56/248.75. He advanced past a fouling Chris Karamesines in round one with a 5.76/212.86, while in round two, his 5.70/243.90 got around Ormsby, who smoked the tires. Dan Pastorini hazed the tires against him in the semifinals, and Conrad moved into the final with a 5.61/253.02. He was to run Amato for the title, but Joe broke, so Kalitta ran 5.65/217.91 to score the victory. At the end of June, the NHRA tour was in Canada for the Grandnationals. Once again, Connie qualified in the top half of the field with a 5.60/253.80 to give him the #6 spot. An improved 5.51/261.32 in the first round beat Bob Simmons, but his engine gave up in round two, and he slowed to a 6.25 that lost to Dick LaHaie's 5.43/257. Kalitta's best times of the year came in qualifying at Ennis with a great 5.397/272.47. At the world finals, Connie qualified ninth at 5.496/261.24, the exact ET and speed as number eight qualifier Eddie Hill, but he ran it after Eddie, thus getting the worse slot. However, Connie did not allow that to stop him, taking an upset win over Larry Minor in round one. He fell to Dick LaHaie in round two. |

Notes: Dan started the season by running a career-best (to this point) 5.52 at 256.41 to qualify #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He fouled away a 5.61 in the first round against Earl Whiting. He bettered his career-best in qualifying for the next NHRA event, the Gatornationals. There, he qualified #3 with a 5.48/254.09. A first-round 5.73/251.81 beat Shirley Muldowney's quicker 5.65/250. He soloed in round two with a 7.29/118.73 when Chris Karamesines could not run. In the semifinals, he had a great race with Don Garlits with "Big Daddy's" 5.50/272, winning over Dan's 5.49/256.95. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Pastorini got his first big NHRA win. He qualified #8 for the show with a 5.67/252.38, and he advanced past round one with a 7.54/101 when Jack Revelle broke a transmission. In round two, both he and Dick LaHaie smoked the tires, with Dan's 6.11/235.97 getting the win over Dick's 6.16/245. A 5.75/248.34 beat Bill Mullins' 5.78/256 in John Carey's car in the semifinals. In the final, he was up against that cagey veteran Gene Snow. The two left together, with Pastorini scoring the win with a 5.56/256.70 over the "Snowman's" 5.64/244. He got into another final at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet in May. A 5.54/243.90 qualified #2 in the eight-car show. He beat Bill Carter in round one with a 5.53, and in the semifinals, he soloed when Whiting could not run after losing an engine in the first round. In the final, Dan came up against Garlits. Once again, the "Old Man" got the win with a 5.40/271 over Pastorini's runner-up effort of 5.57/253. Dan didn't have a very productive outing at Baton Rouge in early June for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.72/236.22, and in the first round, his 5.62/250.00 lost to Muldowney's 5.57/250. National Trail had 27 cars show up to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Dan qualified #11 with a 5.63/238.60 and, in the first round, got a measure of revenge over Garlits when his 5.69/234.31 beat Don's 5.73/251. In the second round, he beat Darrell Gwynn's 5.67/250 with a 5.60/242.39. Unfortunately, he hazed his tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 6.89/127, losing to eventual winner Connie Kalitta's 5.61/253. Pastorini traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.64/256.99. He lost to low qualifier Gwynn in the first round when his 5.92/254.09 finished second to Darrell's 5.43/265. One-half of the quickest side-by-side race in history at 1986 Gators, Garlits' 5.409 to Dan's 5.491. Dan qualified #10 at the World Finals with a 5.544/256.92. He lost to Joe Amato in round one. |

Notes: Dick started the '86 season by setting Low ET while qualifying #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.40 at 264.70. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round and crossed the centerline, losing to Gary Beck. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.49/258.62. He made his way into the final by stopping Earl Whiting in the first round, with a 5.54/254.66, while a round two 5.54/257.58 beat Darrell Gwynn. Dick stepped up to a 5.47/258.76 in the semifinals to beat Beck's 5.51/260. This put him into the final against Don Garlits. The two had a good race, but Garlits' 5.50/268 beat Dick's 5.56/259.36. Dick ran 5.41 as one-half of the quickest side-by-sider at that point (with Darrell Gwynn at 5.326). Dick qualified #5 at the World Finals and made it to the semifinals with best times of 5.410/261.39. Photo from 1985 Nationals. |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. The 4.909 was the low qualifier. After Gwynn's accident at Santa Pod England in early spring of 1990, Frank Hawley stepped up to drive the car at the SpringNationals in Columbus. Not only did Hawley qualify No. 1 with a Low ET of Meet 5.04/275, but he won the event by defeating Joe Amato in the final. |

Notes: This 6.57 was originally listed in 1967, but seemed far too quick for that year. Moving it to 1968, but need confirmation of when the team ran it. 7.27 Lions confirmed |

Notes: Petersen was at Fremont for their New Year's Day race. He qualified #2 with a 6.61, but he lost to Gary Ormsby in the first round. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he lasted until round three, scoring a first-round victory with a 6.69 and a second-round 6.58 over Rick Ramsey's 6.58, but in the third round, Carl Olson beat him. On March 19, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.43 qualified #3, and he ran a career-best (to this point) 6.41 in the first round, to beat Bill Wigginton's 6.63. In round two, he soloed with a 15.82 when Jimmy King failed to show (broke). Herm's 392 failed to fire in the semifinal, giving Clayton Harris a single into the final. Herm made history by scoring the first major win for the Donovan motor by winning the PDA Championships at OCIR. He beat Don Garlits' 6.63 with a 6.42 in the first round, before losing to Fred Mooneyham's 6.62/212 in the second round with a quicker 6.58/217.91. He got back in on the break rule and made the best of it by dropping Randy Allison's 6.57/184 with a 6.37/222.77 in the third frame (32 car field). In the semifinal, he met Mooneyham again. This time, he made sure to put him outrunning a 6.24 (Low ET) at 220.04 over Fred's 6.58/229. In the final, he defeated Tom McEwen for the victory. Also, 6.24 & 6.26 at Lions Last Drag Race. 6.26/221.67 at Ontario Supernationals 72, plus 6.293/220.04 at Indy 1972. Info from National Dragster, 10/29/71. Ran 6.16 at Lions, 6.79 at Pomona, 6.41 at Gainesville, 6.45 at Columbus, 6.62 at Englishtown, and 6.147 during eliminations at Indy. Ran 226.13 at Indy and 228.42 at the Orange County Nitro Championships. |

Notes: Kalitta was at Firebird Raceway in Jan during the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event, testing his car. He ran times of 5.61/249.30 and 5.63/237.46. Connie qualified #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.73/236.09. He beat Shannon Stuart in the first round before his 5.69/202 lost to Joe Amato's 5.49/264 in the second round. At the Gatornationals, he ran 5.68/230.65 to qualify #8. He beat Jack Revelle with a 5.63/212.36, but in the second round, his parachute released early, and he lost to Dick LaHaie. Kalitta attempted to qualify for the eight-car show in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, but his 5.75/250.97 best was good for the first alternate. In May, he was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show, but this time he qualified. In the first round, he ran Don Garlits, and although they both ran 5.77s, "Big Daddy" got the win. The next stop for the NHRA tour was Columbus, Ohio, for the Springnationals at National Trail. Kalitta qualified with a 5.70, putting him in the dreaded #9 spot. That spot put him in the first-round race with low qualifier Amato, a race that Joe won. At the end of June, NHRA went to Canada for the Grandnationals, where Kalitta ran 5.58/255.68 to qualify for #4 in the eight-car show. A first-round 5.54/260.26 beat LaHaie's 5.60/259, and he made it past the semifinals to run against Garlits in the final. There, Conrad ran a good 5.62/256.41, but it wasn't good enough as Garlits took the victory with a 5.48/262. In qualifying for the Summernationals at Englishtown in July, Kalitta ran a career-best (to this point) 5.52 at 254.09 to qualify #4. He beat Chris Karamesines in the first round, and in round two, a 5.57/259 beat Amato. He lost to Darrell Gwynn in the semifinals. Conrad took a big win at the next event, the Mile High Nationals in Denver. He qualified #2 with a 5.63/259.36 and made his way to the finals of the eight-car field. He faced Bill Mullins and beat him with a 5.62 to Mullins' 5.68. Things continued to go well when he also racked up the Northstar Nationals win. At Brainerd, he qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 5.551/258.62. He ran career bests of 5.458/264.70 (track records), beating Garlits' 5.576/259 in the first round. A semifinal 5.531/236.22 advanced when Gary Ormsby fouled. In the final, he met another long-time racer, Gene Snow. Kalitta's 5.523/260.86 took the victory over Snow's 5.63/255. Kalitta hoped to make it three in a row when they rolled into Indianapolis for the US Nationals. A 5.61/261.62 qualified #7 for the show. He had the second Low ET of the first round when his 5.60/259.06 beat Junior Kaiser. Unfortunately, a strong second-round run of 5.65/257.28 lost to Garlits' 5.63/261. The next event on the NHRA schedule was the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. It was a tough show to make with the eight cars all qualified at 5.53 or better. Kalitta was in the middle of the pack with a 5.50/256.41 that qualified #5. He lost to low qualifier Gary Beck in the first round. At the Fallnationals, Connie qualified #4 with a 5.54/241.93. |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from Columbus 1989. Also 4.967 and 290.32 at Maple Grove 9/89 and 4.996 low qualifier at 89 Houston Supernationals on March 3/1989, which was the fourth entry in the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel. Amato waged a war with Gary Ormsby for the NHRA Top Fuel Championship that went down to the final race. It was wire to wire between the two the whole season. It started at the Winternationals where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.04/280.81. He lost to Frank Bradley in the first round. The Supernationals at Houston was the next race and once again Joe set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 4.99. He beat Dick LaHaie in the first round, with a 5.11 and a 5.09/281 beat Jim Head in round two. In the semifinals, he beat Frank Hawley with a 5.04/285 to go into the final against Ormsby. In the final, Amato took a nap at the line and lost to Gary's 5.09/278 with a quicker 5.03/288.63. Gainesville hosted the Gatornationals on March 19 and for the third straight event, Joe set Low ET in qualifying #1 (5.05). Unfortunately for Amato, a 5.15 by Dennis Forcelle beat his 5.17 in the first round. He was father down the qualifying sheet in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 5.20/275.81 gave him the #8 spot in the field. He picked it up to a 5.15/270.51 in the first round, to beat Shirley Muldowney's 5.28/261. But in round two he fell to Ormsby. At Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals, a 5.06/278.12 qualified #4. In the first round against Eddie Hill, he smoked the tires and lost. At the sixth race of the season, the Cajun Nationals, he qualified well with a 5.15/277.77 for the #3 spot, but he again lost in the first round, this time to Gene Snow. He broke through for his first win of '89 at the Springnationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.10/278.98. Joe beat pat Dakin, Lori Johns (with a 5.08/284), and Ormsby in the semifinals to set up a final round match-up with Hank Endres. In that final round race, Endres tried hard with a 5.22/266, but it was Amato's day and he won with a 5.12/280.72. The NHRA tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. Joe qualified #3 with a 5.17/272.31. In the first round, he dispatched Head's 5.32/267 with a 5.22/275.48. He beat Hill in round two with a 5.28/272.56 to Eddie's close 5.29/272. In the semifinal, Joe ran a 5.25/268.65 that lost to LaHaie's 5.14/279. Race number nine of the season was at Englishtown for the Summernationals. A 5.08/286.18 qualified #2, but he took a first-round loss by Forcelle. Things went more his way at the Mile High Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.22/268.57. He beat Muldowney in the first round, and in round two, a 5.28/264 beat Forcelle's 5.41. In the semifinals, both he and LaHaie ran 5.22's with Joe coming out on top. In the final, he met Ormsby and a 5.21/266.11 covered Gary's 5.33/270. It was Joe's second win of the year. He almost got another win at the next event, the California Nationals. There he qualified way down in the #12 spot with a 5.15/284.18. He advanced past the first-round with a 5.13/270 when opponent Jack Ostrander broke. In round two he beat Hill with a 5.06/282.39 and in the semifinal, a 5.09/282.39 beat Head. In the final, he met Low ET setter and low qualifier Frank Bradley who beat Joe for the title. He made his third final in a row at the Seafair Nationals at Seattle International. He qualified #1 with a 5.03/282.84 and another 5.03 at 280.72 in the first round, beat Hill. In round two a 5.10/278.51 beat Mike Brotherton and in the semifinals, he took a big win over Ormsby with a 5.07/273.88. In the final he ran LaHaie and even though Dick ran a strong 5.10/278, it was no match for Amato who set Low ET with a 5.01/278.98 in winning his third race of the season. The fourth win came pretty quick, it was at the next event, the Northstar Nationals. He had his worst qualifying spot of the season there when he ran a 5.39/255.75 for the #15 position. In the first round, he picked up to a 5.14/279.15 to beat Bradley's identical 5.14/278. He beat a tire-smoking Darrell Gwynn in round two with a 5.20/275.73 and in the semifinals, a 5.16/277 beat Snow's ailing car. In the final, he ran a 5.24/278.81 over Muldowney for the win. Things didn't go as well at Indy for the US Nationals. Joe qualified #4 with a 5.02/286.16. He beat Frank Cook in the first round. In round two he caught Bradley napping and won with a 5.16/287.08 to Frank's 5.11/274. But in the semifinals, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires to a 10.56/74.96 loss to LaHaie's 5.01/280. The next event was the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. A 5.01/283.82 qualified #5 and in the first round, Joe advanced with a 5.00/288.55 when John Carey fouled. He cracked into the fours in round two, running a 4.96/290.32 over Muldowney's 4.97/287. He stayed in the fours in the semifinals with a 4.98/288.18 beating a tire-blazing Ormsby. But in the final, when he definitely needed to run a four, a 5.01/285.98 came in second best to Gwynn's 4.95/281. At the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals, Joe ran a career best (to this point) of 4.95/288.18 to qualify #3. He beat Gene Snow in round one, with a 5.02/286.18 and in round two, a 5.07/287.17 beat Hill. But a semifinal 5.01/291.26 lost to Ormsby's 4.98/289. The second last race of the year was the Fallnationals at Firebird raceway. Joe qualified #3 with a 5.07/280.81. He beat an engine blowing Ed Moore in round one, and a 5.11/277 beat Lori Johns in round two. But a semifinal 5.14 lost to Muldowney's 5.16. |

Notes: Eleventh member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club on October 3/1993, with a 302.41 at Topeka, Kan. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Set national record at 4.784 (low qualifier) at 93 Winternationals. Low qualifier at 4.789 at 93 Topeka Fall. Ran 4.782 at World Finals. | Cory had a great season in '93. Although things didn't look so well at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January Cory and crew chief, Jimmy Prock had their new Brad Hadman built car there, but were never able to get in a full run. He made two easy check-out passes with a 7.13/80.19 best, but the next three runs he made had the car either smoke the tires or go into hard tire shake. The good news was, of all the Top Fuel cars there, McClenathan had the best 60 foot times at .88. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with a 4.78/296.93. The ET was a new NHRA record, and he went on to beat Shelly Anderson in the first round, with a 4.82/295.17. Another strong run of 4.85/292.30 was run in round two against Tommy Johnson Jr., but it was wasted with a red light. He qualified on the pole for the next NHRA race as well, the Motorcraft Nationals where he ran 4.82/297.71 to get the spot. McClenathan beat Bobby Baldwin in the first round, with a 4.95/293.35, but once again he fouled in round two giving Jim Head an easy 6.78/219 run into the semifinals. At the Slick 50 Nationals at Houston, everyone was running career-best times while Prock was having trouble getting Cory down the track. He eventually made the field with a 4.95/287.71 that held for the "bump spot." In round one he faced low qualifier Ed McCulloch and Cory fouled. After fouling in three straight races Cory was determined not to do it again at the Gatornationals so after going out and qualifying #1 with a 4.78 (Low ET) at 291.73, he beat Mike Brotherton in the first round, with a 4.90/291.73. In round two he faced Mike Dunn in Darrell Gwynn's car and while he didn't foul, Prock put too much power into it, and he smoked the tires and lost. It was either on the pole or on the "bump spot" for the team as at the Winston Invitational they qualified on the "bump" in the eight-car field with a 4.97/287.17. Unfortunately, on that qualifier, he crashed at the top end totaling the car and Cory received third degree burns on his forehead and second degree burns to his hands. Obviously, the team was unable to make the Southern Nationals at Atlanta, but they were back and ready at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. Cory qualified #6 with a 4.96/294.98. An off pace 5.36/280.89 beat Anderson in round one, and in round two, his 4.93/294.40 beat Johnson Jr's 4.95/291. In the semifinals, he faced Joe Amato, and he smoked the tires and lost. The Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown was NHRA's next stop. Cory qualified #5 with a 4.83/292.77. |

Notes: Set first 6 second National Record at 6.97 (backed up for record) on 5/07/67 at Carlsbad CA in Don Johnson's car. On 9/02/1967, Tom won first side-by-side six-second race (vs. Dabler in John Bateman's car) at Indy (McEwen won). Was the Indy race in the Beachcomber, too? |

Notes: Don started the '84 season by running a best of three match race against Shirley Muldowney at Firebird Raceway. Unfortunately, he lost three straight. Things went much better at the AHRA Winternationals. There he qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.01. He advanced when low qualifier Jerry Ruth blew both a rear end and a motor in the first round. In the semifinals, his 5.90/244.56 beat Dick LaHaie's 5.93/228. He won the race with a final round 5.83/211 when opponent Gene Snow got crossed up and shut off. Garlits lost a match race with Gene Snow in March at Green Valley. Snow won with a 5.80 best over Garlits' trailing 6.31. Don really came alive in the late season. He won Indy and the World Finals with Low 5.50s at 260 plus, with best times of 5.463/263.92 at Ontario. Before that, Don ran 263.92 at Eunice LA in September. |
