Notes: Won Division 7 four times, 72/76. Also 5.832 at Fremont 5/75 and 5.922/226.70 Low Qualifier at Bakersfield 75, 5.922/226.70 and 5.80 and 5.84 at Ontario World Finals 75. | Started the season on Jan 5 at the Irwindale Grand Premiere. Thirty cars tried to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Warren qualified #1 with a 6.05, almost two-tenths better than the second qualifier. He advanced past the first-round when Danny Ongais lost fire and a second round 6.04 beat a tire-smoking Gary Read. In the semis, he got another easy ride when Tom Toler lost fire. But a final round Low ET and Top Speed at 6.01/239.36 over Walt Rhoades' 6.18/236 proved it was no fluke. The team then set Low ET of the meet at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.10 over Shirley Muldowney in the second round. James had also set Top Speed earlier at 237.46. In the semifinal, a 6.35/206.88 beat Gary Beck's 6.42/229. But in the final, Marvin Graham stopped him. After those runs, it was surprising that the team's best of 6.11 (third alternate) failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals. But at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, they were back on top of their game, a 5.92/226.70 qualified Warren first. A first-round 5.90/217 advanced when Don Ewald fouled. In round two a 5.93/233.16 beat Tony Nancy (6.15/221), and a third round 5.91/229 beat Larry Dixon's Chevy. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 5.87/235.60 over Gary Ritter. In the final, another 5.91 at a Top Speed of the meet 243.24 gave James the title over Jeb Allen's 6.13/235. Another win in March came at the AHRA Grand American West Meet at OCIR. Warren qualified #2 with a 6.21/214.79. He again set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.10/234.37. He beat Bob Noice in the final. He didn't race at many IHRA events, but he did attempt to run the Winternationals at Miami-Hollywood, but they failed to qualify. Early in May, he won the Irwindale "Fox Hunt" race, beating Walt Rhoades in the final. Also in May, at Fremont for the Northern Nationals, Warren set Low ET of the meet in qualifying with a 5.83/237.46. A first-round 5.99/238.09 beat Rhoades' 6.19/234. In round two a 5.96/232.55 beat Dennis Baca. He met Frank Bradley in the final. A 5.93/234.98 defeated Frank's 6.00/242 for the victory. In July, he ran 6.01 to Rick Ramsey's 5.95 to take runner-up at OCIR's Nitro Championships. James ran his best NHRA national event times at the World Finals at Ontario with a 5.780/247.25 during eliminations.

Notes: The eighth member of the Cragar Four-Second Club for Top Fuel with this national record run on September 15, 1989. Shirley took part in the quickest side-by-side run in history with Joe Amato at 89 Keystones, 4.967 (Joe) to 4.975 (Shirley). Photo (far lane) from 1989 US Nationals IRP vs. Lori Johns (near Lane). What can you say about Shirley Muldowney? She was amazing. Despite her accidents in the sport, she always returned. Shirley loved drag racing. She ran well in '89, finishing in ninth in the season-long NHRA points chase. She only got one win, but she was consistent throughout the year. | The season started at Pomona for the Winternationals, where she ran a 5.15/274.22 to qualify #10. An improved 5.13/275.73 was not enough in round one, and she lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.07/277. At Houston for the Supernationals, a best-ever (to this point) 5.07 qualified #8. In the first round, she ran alternate, Lori Johns. Shirley smoked the tires, and Johns went on to a 5.16 win. The Gatornationals was the next event on the schedule, and Shirley qualified #12 with a 5.20, setting up a first-round race with former boyfriend and crew chief Connie Kalitta. Announcers were always quick to point that out. In their race, Kalitta broke, and Shirley moved on with a 5.49. She lost to Eddie Hill in the second round. At Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, she just made the show with her 5.29/266.74 qualifying on the bump. A first-round 5.28/261.39 was no match for Joe Amato's 5.15/270. She was a no-show at the next few events before she showed up in Canada for the Grandnationals. Unfortunately, a best of 5.45/250.69 was good for the first alternate. Shirley did make the show at Englishtown for the Summernationals. A 5.25/276.75 qualified on the bump. She lost to Frank Cook in round one. At the Mile High Nationals, she again lost in the first round, this time to Amato. She qualified #10 with a 5.41/263.38 in the thin Denver air. At the eleventh race of the season, the California Nationals, Shirley ran a 5.12/285.17 to qualify in the top half of the field (#7). But for the third straight race, she was gone after the first-round. Gordie Bonin's 5.15 sent her packing this time. At Seattle for the Seafair Nationals, she qualified #7 with a 5.12/287.72. A first-round 5.16/283.10 beat Gary Beck in the McGee car. But in the second round, Ormsby's 5.11/280 beat her game 5.14/282.22. She ran really well at the Northstar Nationals, qualifying #4 with a 5.18/276.60. Cook fouled against her in the first round, but she legged it through with a 5.19/280.02 anyway. Both she and Hill smoked the tires in the second round, and her 5.62/268.41 beat Eddie's 5.80/262.92. In the semifinals, Shirley and opponent Kalitta ran 5.16's at 277, but the lady got the win light. In the final, she lost to Amato. Shirley tried hard to qualify at Indy for the US Nationals, but it wasn't to be. Her best of 5.17/281.95 was the fourth alternate. She sure made up for her non-qualifier at the next event, the Keystone Nationals, where she used a 4.97/284.99 to take the pole. In the first round, she beat Gene Snow with a 5.00/286.16. Then Shirley and Amato had the quickest ever side by side race, with Joe's 4.96/290 nipping her 4.97/287.81. At the Chief Nationals at the Texas Motorplex, Muldowney qualified #5 with a 4.98/289.66. She ran a shut-off 11.11 in the first round, when Rudy Toepke broke. In round two, she lost to Ormsby. Shirley got her lone win of the season at the next event, the Fallnationals at Firebird Raceway. She qualified #1 with a 5.03/282.04 (Top Speed). In the second round, a 5.15/279 beat Snow's 5.16, and in the semifinals, a holeshot 5.16/269 beat Amato's quicker 5.14. In the final, she met Darrell Gwynn, and once again, she outdrove the boys with her 5.05/275.48 getting the win over Darrell's slightly quicker 5.04/278. | Shirley and Tobler were also Top Speed at Seattle in '89 at 287.72. - Joe Moore

Notes: Won Top Eliminator at Indy with 7.321/215.82. Won Winternationals at Pomona that year too (times to come), and turned 7.68, 206.42 at Lions on February 1 and 7.51/200.00 at 1966 March Meet. Ran 7.65 at Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals. | Mike had big shoes to fill. He replaced Don Prudhomme at the wheel of Roland Leong's "Hawaiian." How do you follow a driver like Prudhomme in the driver's seat? Well, he did it by winning the Winternationals at Pomona. Mike qualified #3 with a 7.66 in the 32 car field. He beat Roy Thode in the first round, with a 7.57/208.80. In the second round, a 7.55/208.80 beat Paul Sutherland. He almost lost in round three when Pete Robinson had him beat, but Pete lost a blower belt and Snively squeezed past for the win. In the semifinals, a 7.59 beat James Warren's slightly quicker 7.58. For all the marbles, he ran a 7.54/209.78 to win over Jim Dunn's 7.59/207. The team went to Lions the following week (February 26) for the UDRA Winternationals. A 7.68/206.42 qualified #11 in the 32 car show, but they failed to reach the finals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, the "Hawaiian" lasted until round three when Mike got out of shape against Warren and crossed the centerline. On March 20, Mike ran an eight-car show at Irwindale. He qualified #2 with a 7.62 and ran an 8.32/95.44 to advance past the first-round, but in the semifinals, a 7.73 lost to Rick Stewart's 7.64. On April 2, he won a 16-car show at Irwindale. Mike beat the "Dark Horse" in the first round, with a 7.61/192.70. In the second round, a 7.76/166.66 advanced when John Martin fouled in the Muse-Crafton car. In the semifinal, he beat Dave Babler and for the money, a 7.53 beat Danny Ongais. The team was back at Irwindale on April 9 for another 16-car show. Snively lasted until the semifinals before losing to Dave Beebe. The "Hawaiian" team frequented Irwindale showing up on April 23 for yet another 16-car show. Mike qualified #1 with a 7.58. In the first round, he beat Babler's 7.68/209 with a track record 7.45 at 210.76. In the second round, a 7.55/190.66 beat Ray Ayres' 8.02/193. Mike was a little sleepy in the semifinal and his 7.58/206.88 lost to Stewart's 7.71/213. He set Low ET the following week (April 30) at Irwindale. He ran a 7.65/198.66 in the first round, while beating Dunn's 7.84/199. In round two a 7.97/181.08 beat Ayres' 7.95/193. Another 7.97/181.08 lost to Zane Schubert's 7.77/207 in the semifinal. Mike won the next Irwindale Top Fuel show on May 7th. He qualified #3 with a 7.87 and picked up to a 7.64/187.50 in the first round, over the injected car of John Evans. He got around Tommy Allen's 7.98/200 in round two with a 7.65/200.88. In the semifinal, he soloed with a 7.99/180. In the final, he beat Dunn with a 7.56/201.78. The next day they were at Carlsbad for a Jackpot Circuit race. In the first round, Snively's 7.57/202.24 beat Dunn's 7.64/205. In the semifinal, a 7.65/202.70 lost to eventual winner Beebe's 7.58/206.

Notes: Dick qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.80/242.58. He beat Dick Phillips in the first round, with a 5.73/238.95, but another 5.73 at 240.89 lost to Don Garlits' 5.50/262 in the second round. Things went LaHaie's way at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he used a 5.63/244.56 to qualify #4. He beat an off-pace George Tolon with a 5.72/247.93, and in the second round, he improved to 5.62/252.50 over Connie Kalitta. Dick cut a good light in the semifinals, where his 5.70/250.00 held off Gary Ormsby's quicker 5.57/259. This put LaHaie into the final against Joe Amato. It was a close race, but Dick got the win light with a 5.65/248.69, beating Joe's 5.69/243. The next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Qualifying was challenging as it was an eight-car show with seventeen cars attempting to qualify. Dick made the show with a 5.65/249.85 that put him in the #5 spot in the field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Garlits. LaHaie ran well in their match, but his 5.75/249.03 finished second best to Don's 5.62/261. He then made a stop at Tulsa for the ADRA Springnationals, where he won over an eight-car field. He beat Chris Karamesines in the final with a 5.87 Low ET of the meet. LaHaie then went to Alamo Dragway for another eight-car show on May 19. He qualified #1 with a 5.86/238.09 and another 5.86 at 226.70 in the first round beat Bruce Burleson. He picked up slightly to 5.83/236.84 in the semifinals to beat a tire-smoking Karamesines. He got Low ET of the meet with a final round victory over Buddy Warren with a 5.75/223.32. With all his success, it was surprising that the following week (May 26), he failed to qualify at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His best of 5.78/240.00 was good for the first alternate. Dick made up for his non-qualifier by running a career-best (to this point) 5.59/253.52 to qualify #2 behind Amato's 5.58 at the NHRA Springnationals. He had some tough competition here as his first-round 5.65/251.81 beat Frank Bradley's 5.73/246. In round two, a 5.66/253.52 beat Darrell Gwynn's 5.69/216. Even his semifinal 5.66/251.81 was good, but he lost to a quick-leaving Bill Mullins, who won with a 5.71/258. LaHaie then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with his 5.62/259.36, and in the opening round, his slightly better 5.60/259.96 fell to eventual winner Garlits' 5.54/260. Dick ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.470 at 259.36 to qualify #2 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals behind Garlits' 5.43/260. In round one, he beat Dan Pastorini before his 5.62/250.83 lost to Darrell Gwynn's 5.59/253 in a very close race. He then went to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but his 5.83/233.16 failed to qualify for the eight-car show (second alternate). He did not compete at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals as he blew an engine at Kansas City on the Wednesday before the race. He had lots of trouble keeping all eight cylinders lit at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. All three of his qualifying passes came on seven cylinders. He ran 5.67, 5.61, and a 5.60/255.24 that put him into the show in the #6 spot. In the first round, his 5.64/247.66 defeated Pastorini's 5.73/241. In round two, his 5.70/251.25 lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.63/256. Even his two runs in eliminations came on seven cylinders. Dick must have gotten things straightened out by the time he got to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He broke 260 for the first time when he ran 5.51/260.26 and 5.54/261.17 in qualifying. The 5.51 placed him #6 in the eight-car field. In the opening round, a troubled, shut-off 8.37/87.09 lost to Gwynn's 5.60/232. Dick ran 5.51/259 at ADRA Kansas City.

Notes: Gary started the season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.60/253.52. He improved to a 5.414/254.23 in the first round, over low qualifier Dick LaHaie who got out of shape and crossed the centerline. In the second round, he smoked his tires and shut off to 11.84/63.73, which lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.52/253. The NHRA Gatornationals was the team's next stop, and Beck qualified #2 with a 5.47/259.36. He beat Hank Endres in the first round, with a 5.58/253.52, while a round two 5.63/257.87 beat Kalitta's quicker 5.60/255. In the semifinals, Gary ran a strong 5.51/260.71, but he lost to LaHaie's stronger 5.47/258. He again qualified #2 at NHRA's next event, the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. This time a 5.49/259.96 got him the spot. He ran Chris Karamesines in the first round, and his 5.62/253.52 beat the "Greek's" 6.08/175. But in the second round, crew chief Bernie Fedderly put too much power into it, and Beck smoked the tires shutting off to 11.01/70 in a loss to Bill Mullins. Beck then made a stop at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet now held in May. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.55/257.14 and an improved 5.45/263.15 advanced past Denver Schutz, who shut off on the line in the first round. In the semifinals, it was Beck against Don Garlits. There was no love lost between these two. This time Garlits' unreal 5.37/271 was too much for Beck's 5.59/262.39. Back on the NHRA Trail for the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, the Miller American team had all kinds of problems and could only qualify #15 in the sixteen-car field with a 5.77/243.44. Fedderly worked his magic, and the car responded with a 5.63/250.34 in the first round, to beat Frank Bradley's 5.73/242. In round two, Beck had a close one with Joe Amato. Gary's 5.68/245.96 just nipped Joe's 5.69/249. In the semifinals, Gary once again met up with Garlits. This time he gambled on the 'tree and lost giving "Big Daddy" an easy 5.99/241 run into the final. If they thought they were running badly at Baton Rouge, they were not ready for National Trail. There they ran 5.79/247.86 for the "bump" spot at the NHRA Springnationals. This was uncharacteristic for the team. A first-round 5.75/248.34 lost to Jody Smart's 5.64/218 in the first round. Things were not much better at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. A 5.77/245.23 qualified #11, and a first-round 5.59/256.41 lost to Garlits' 5.43/268. The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9, listed a 5.378 for Gary, but we cannot find evidence of that. Removing that ET until we can validate.

Notes: For the NHRA Winternationals, Kalitta qualified #8 at 7.681 but lost to Tommy Allen in round one, 7.61/208 to 7.62/198.22. He ran 7.62/203.60 at Lions UDRA Winter Championships on 2/11/66 and 7.87 at Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals. Connie qualified with a 7.51/208.32 at Famoso for the March Meet but lost in round two. He faced off against Bobby Langley for a best two out of three match race at Amarillo on March 27. Connie won all three races with a best of 7.67/205.57. He was in Detroit on April 13 for a four-car race. He lost to Chris Karamesines in his first race, and in the second race, his 7.73/208.32 lost to Garlits' 7.65/206. It was not Kalitta's day as in the third race, his 7.76/209.30 lost to Jimmy Nix's 7.85/210. Kalitta ran Bobby Vodnik at Atco on May 1 for a best two out of three match. He set both ends of the track record in the first race with a 7.67/215.30, but he had fouled, and Bobby won the first race. In the second race, Kalitta lost a blower and the match when Bobby's 8.05/197 gave him two wins in a row over the Ford. Kalitta bolted on another blower and soloed with a 7.76/208.80. Another big match race was run at Capitol on May 7 against the "Ramchargers" with Don Westerdale driving. Kalitta won the first race with a 7.35 track speed record of 221.12. In the second race, he fouled away a 7.61/211, letting the "Rams" 7.80/206 have an easy win. Don fouled in the final deciding race, and Kalitta powered through with a 7.49/215.82 match race win. The following day (May 8), Connie was at Madison for a match race against Marvin Schwartz. He beat Marvin two straight, setting track records of 7.92/200.88 to win the match. He was at Cecil County on May 15 for a best of three match against Don Prudhomme in the "B&M Tork Master" car. Prudhomme won the first race with a 7.46/216 over the Ford's 7.80/210.76. In the second race, Kalitta took the win with a 7.48/183.28 over the "Snake," who fouled. However, the slow speed resulted from a blown engine, and Connie could not run the final race. Don soloed to win the match. Richmond hosted the NASCAR Springnationals on May 30, and Kalitta lost a blower during qualifying and suffered slight burns. He was unable to make eliminations. At the NHRA Springnationals in Bristol on June 3, a 7.64 qualified him fifth. He won round one over Dave Babler, 7.549/190.26 to 7.67/208, but he lost to a huge holeshot in round two when his 7.522/200.44 couldn't catch Ray Marsh's 7.87/194. He faced Don Garlits for a best of three match at Detroit on June 11. He had some problems with his magneto in the first race and lost with an 8.67. After tearing the motor down and rebuilding it for the second race, it responded with a 7.99/201, but he still lost to Garlits' 7.65/209. A rematch between the two was run at New York on June 26, but once again, Kalitta had problems, this time, he blew a rear end in the first race, and he was unable to repair, so Garlits soloed to win the second race and the match. Another best-of-three match race was run at Connecticut on July 17 against Mike Snively in the "Hawaiian." Connie won the first race with an 8.02/187.88, beating Mike's quicker 7.89/197. In the second race, Mike's 7.82/173 beat Connie's 7.99/189.46. Snively lost a motor in the last race while Kalitta won the match with a track record 7.77 at 194.38.There were no shortages of match races available as everyone wanted to see the big SOHC Ford take on the Chryslers. On July 23, Kalitta faced Tommy Ivo at Alton. In their first race, the Ford's 7.77/188.28 came out on top over the Chrysler's 8.07/197. Only one more run was needed to decide the winner, as Kalitta again led Ivo through the traps with his 7.81/192.30 winning over Tommy's 7.93/194. He won the Division 3 race at Bluegrass Dragway on July 24 with little opposition. Kalitta faced another tough opponent in the way of Don Prudhomme for a best of three match at Detroit on July 30. Conrad won the first race with a suspect 7.16/209.78, but Don's holeshot 7.83/200 in the second race beat his quicker 7.53/210, and in the final race, Don again proved why he was such a great driver with another holeshot win, 7.75/204 to Connie's much quicker 7.49/208. These two ran each other again at Capitol Raceway on August 6.This time Kalitta got "revenge" on the "Snake. In the first race, Kalitta won with a 7.45/207.36.Prudhomme came back to win the second race with his 7.50/205 edging the Ford's 7.69/188.28.But the last race was all Kalitta's, as his 7.44/213.28 won the match over Don's shut off 11.33.The SOHC had burned a piston on the last run while the "Snake" had lost an engine. On August 21 at the NASCAR Nationals at Dragway 42, Connie qualified sixteenth with a 7.89 and ran a 7.59 best before Pete Robinson beat him in the semifinals. Connie set the Pittsburgh track record at 200.08. At the US Nationals, Connie qualified #3 with a 7.398/212.76. He beat Val LaPorte in round one, 7.419/209.30 to 14.84/78 but lost in the second round with a 7.515/215.82 to a holeshot 7.558/211.76 by Don Prudhomme. Shortly after that, he went to Detroit Dragway for a best of three match against Nick Colbert. Kalitta lost the match. Connie was one of eight fuel dragster drivers selected to race at Cecil County on September 24 for the Mr. USA Fuel Championships. Unfortunately, the big Ford failed to fire in the first round against Tommy Ivo. This dragster's career came to a halt on October 9 in Connecticut. Kalitta was there to face Ivo in a best-of-three-match race. In the first race, he beat Ivo with a 7.27 track record at 204.54, beating Prudhomme's former 7.54 record. But the run came at a price as the big Ford blew and gave Connie an oil bath. He couldn't see through his oil-covered goggles, and he drove into a trench. The car flipped three times and was totally destroyed. He was lucky enough to walk away with some bumps and bruises. Kalitta had to borrow a chassis to stuff his Cammer into for the NHRA World Finals on October 30 since he had wrecked his car. He qualified #6 at 7.387/204.08 but lost to Pete Robinson in round one, 7.20/188 to 7.537/181.08. - Ron Howard

Notes: Won Division 7 four times, 72/76. The 5.883 was the low qualifier at the 74 World Finals. Also 5.94/241.93 low qualifier at 74 Winters. | Started the season on January 12 for the Irwindale Grand Premiere. There was no qualifying as starting positions were drawn from a hat. All eight-cars were members of the Cragar five-second club. Unfortunately, James shut down early in his first-round race with an 8.48 loss to John Stewart's wheelstanding 7.62. He then went to Pomona and qualified #1 as mentioned above. A first-round 6.01/230.17 beat Jim Murphy's off pace 7.05, but Jerry Ruth's 6.27/202 beat his 6.43/162 in the second round. The team loaded up and went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Warren qualified #11, but he lost to Billy Tidwell in the first round. On March 17 at the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont, a 6.38 qualified #3. A first-round 6.18/230.27 beat Frank Bradley. In the second round, a 6.26 beat Dwight Salisbury's 6.34. In the semis, they lost a motor at half-track, leaving Dennis Baca a 6.21/234 winner. On April 6 at the OCIR AHRA Grand American race, James set Low ET of the meet in qualifying with a 6.06. That was pretty good considering 42 cars were going for 16 spots. He ran 6.22 and 6.14 in the first two rounds before exploding a supercharger in the semifinal against Dan Richins. He still advanced because Dan fouled. In the final, a 6.35/223.88 was a bit short of Don Garlits' 6.24/239.36. 6.29 230.17 1974 NHRA US Nationals.

Notes: Had Top Fuel Record for 2 Years. Won Division 1 69/70. The photo is the '68 car; the '69 car was longer. Ran 6.50s at Indy, but lost in semis. | Raley was at the Gainesville Opener on February 16. It was an eight-car show and he won the show with a final round 7.19/223.88 over Dave Chenevert. He was at Miami-Hollywood for the Miami Winter Championships, and although he failed to win he gave a good account of himself, qualifying third with a 7.35. Raley set Low ET at 6.94 on the way to winning the NHRA Division 1 race at York US 30. He beat Larry Bucher in the final with a 7.02/206. Another Division 1 victory came at Budds Creek in June. Raley set Low ET and Top Speed when he beat Carey Jones in the first round, with a 6.99/212.26. He soloed to the win with a 7.12/206.88 when Marvin Schwartz shut off with no oil pressure in the final. He continued to run strong in Division 1 when they ran at Maple Grove. He qualified #1 with a 6.92/214.78 (Low ET & Top Speed). A first-round 7.07/210.76 advanced when Will Zack lost fire on the line. In the semifinals, a 7.06/210.76 beat Joe Jacono's better 6.95/204. In the final, he again showed his driving ability when he beat Bucher's 7.00/193 with a 7.11/211.76. Tom was real strong at Indy for the US Nationals, but you wouldn't have known it during qualifying. He qualified #18 in the 32 car show with a 6.69/223.58, but in the first round, he stepped up to a 6.59/209.37 over Norman Gingrass' 6.69/219. He ran an easy solo (7.45) in round two. In the third round, he and Steve Carbone had a good race with Raley's 6.51 stopping Carbone's 6.54. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Don Prudhomme. National Trail hosted the first Annual National Dragster Invitationals on October 4. Tom was there running strong. It was an eight-car event and in round one, Raley's 6.84/221.26 beat Darryl Hunt. In the semifinals, a 6.87/208.32 advanced when Chuck Kurzawa fouled. In the final he ran a strong 6.83/214.28, but unfortunately, he fouled, giving the win to Al Goodman's 7.04. At the NHRA World Finals at Dallas on October 26, Tom qualified #13 in the 16-car field with a 6.86/205.01. He advanced past the first-round with a 7.25 when John Wiebe fouled. He lost to Chenevert's 6.78/215 in round two with a 7.01/199.55.

Notes: Also ran 6.91 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/69. Confirmed 222.77 at NHRA Indianapolis 69. Ran 7.12 at Riverside Hot Rod Magazine Championship. | At Irwindale on January 12, sixteen-cars tried to make an eight-car show. Larry ran a 7.54/200.88 to qualify sixth. He beat Jim Nicoll's 7.44/206 in the first round, with a 7.40/207.36. In the semifinal, a non-firing Glen Woolsey advanced when Larry fouled against him. A 6.81 Pomona track record at 214.79 qualified #1 at the NHRA Winternationals. A first-round 7.14/210.77 lost to Ron Rivero's 7.07. He then went to OCIR for the second All-Pro event. 35 cars showed up to qualify for the eight spots and Larry's 7.03/211.26 came in fourth best. A much better 6.85 in the first round, beat Tom McEwen's 7.25. In the semifinal, he beat Dave Beebe. For all the marbles, a 7.24/220.04 beat Steve Carbone's 7.52/216 in the final. He beat Beebe again, this time in the first round, at the March Meet in Bakersfield. A 6.94/221.75 beat Dave who shut off early. In round two, a 7.05/222.77 beat Jerry Ruth's 7.25/217. Jim Nicoll smoked his tires against him in the third round (32 car field), but a 6.87 by Jim Dunn in the semis put him on the trailer. He didn't qualify that well at Riverside for the HRM Championships on March 16 when a 7.12 qualified #22. He improved to a 6.87/217.39 to get past Gerry Glenn in the first round, and a second round 6.99/202.24 beat Jack McCloud. Jeep Hampshire's 7.05/216 lost to Larry's 7.00/218.44 in round three. A holeshot 7.08/217.00 beat Don Garlits' quicker 7.02/221 in the semifinal. He again beat Carbone in the final for another big win with a 7.23/205.94. He lost in the first round, at the final OCIR All-Pro race on March 29. He qualified with a 7.02/210.76, but his first-round 7.15/203.60 lost to Carbone's 6.95/218. He had some trouble at Lions for an eight-car show on April 12. While attempting to qualify, the car got airborne and when it landed, it bent the front of the dragster up pretty bad. He was back at Lions a week later (April 19) for another eight-car show. This time his 6.86 qualified #6. Unfortunately, he had more problems and was unable to run in eliminations. On April 26 he set Low ET at an eight-car show at OCIR. Unfortunately, it came with a loss as he fouled it away in the first round, against Glenn. The "first-round blues" continued at Irwindale on May 3 for an eight-car show and in round one, he smoked the tires the whole track and lost to Ron Manke. He got things going again at Lions on May 10 when he won an eight-car show. He advanced past round one with a 6.83/216 and he soloed in the semifinals when Glenn was shut off on the line. In the final, a 6.84/217.39 got the victory over Manke's 6.90/226. He almost won again on May 24 at the NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale. He was a bit lucky as well. He advanced past the first-round with a 7.10 and in round two, Glenn lost fire and he soloed. In the semifinals, Abbott and Lee fouled and Larry went on to the finals against James Warren. In the final, Dixon lost an engine and Warren took the win. He lost to Jim Dunn in the first round, at the NHRA Springnationals after qualifying #19 in the 32 car field with a 6.91/215.82.

Notes: Larry got his license at the last OCIR Grand Premier in Jan. '83. He ran 6.05 and 5.95, measuring the throttle. - Joe Moore | Larry qualified eleventh at Pomona with a 5.873/233.76. In the first round, his motor-blowing 5.86/214.79 lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.74/230. At Gainesville, his 5.64/242.58 qualified #3. He got a solo in the opening round when Butch Osmon failed to show and ran 5.75/243.90. In round two, Minor really picked up, running 5.513/246.57 over Danny Danell's 5.80/235. In the semifinal, he was paired against his hired driver, Gary Beck. Minor lost a blower belt, and Gary went on to win the race. Atlanta was the team's next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals, and Larry's 5.68/236.84 qualified #5 for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, that set up an all-Minor first-round race as Beck qualified #1. Gary won their race with a 5.42/252 over Minor's 5.90/222.77. He unintentionally beat Gary Beck's team car in the final of the Cajun Nationals. Minor shut off early but out-coasted Beck, who had the blower belt break. A solid season with best times of 5.513 at Gainesville and 247.25 at Indy and the OCIR World Finals.

Notes: Mullins ran strong in '85. He started the year by qualifying #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.57/263.00. A first-round 5.91/214.79 got around Frank Bradley, but in round two he lost a motor and the race to Larry Minor. At the Gatornationals, he continued to run strong. A 5.66/255.10 qualified #7. He beat Hank Endres in the first round, with a 5.68/256.41. In round two he upset Don Garlits with a 5.67 over Garlits' 5.68. Unfortunately, facing Joe Amato in the semifinals, he fouled. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. It was an eight-car show and Bill qualified #4 with a 5.64/249.03. He lost to Gene Snow in the first round. The Cajun Nationals featured another eight-car show. Qualifying was tough as Mullins blew an engine trying to make the show. Another engine was put in and he qualified. He beat Gary Beck in the first round, with a 5.74/249 and in the semifinals, a 5.67/254 beat Darrell Gwynn. In the final, he faced Garlits and Don claimed his 25th NHRA win to beat Mullins. It was still a very good showing for the team. He finished one spot higher at the next NHRA event, the Springnationals at Columbus. He qualified #4 with a 5.61/252.95 and beat Dan Pastorini in the first round. He got revenge on Garlits in round two when he beat him with a 5.69/252 over Don's off pace 5.95. Notes: Murphy attempted to qualify the new "Beebe and Murphy" Top Fuel car at the NHRA Grandnationals. A blower explosion helped in keeping the team from qualifying for the eight-car field. Shortly after that, they were at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Jim qualified #8 for the sixteen-car show, and in the first round, his 6.38/229.00 was upset by the #16 qualifier, Gary Beck, who beat him with a 6.36/209. Beck would go on to win the race. That was followed by a win at an eight-car show at Tri-City. Twelve cars had shown to qualify for this race. An opening round 6.43/218.44 advanced, and in the semifinal, he defeated a tire-smoking Pat Dakin with a 6.40/221.13. In the final, his 6.41/227.84 (Top Speed) beat John Thomas' off-pace 8.65. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, Jim's 6.269/229.59 qualified #21. An off-pace 7.186/132.54 in the opening round lost to Carl Olson's 6.15/213. Jim was a DNQ at the Ontario Finals (times not reported). AKA Fighting Irish. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida.
