Notes: Originally built on '31 Chevy frame rails, but much reworked by Garlits over the years. SR 1 was revamped to fit the taller Malone after Garlits temporarily retired from driving following a mid-year car fire. Oft-reworked car was then re-christened Swamp Rat 1-B. – RT | Set NHRA national speed record on 9/59 at Dunkirk NY (at 195.63). - SK; Malone's run of 195.633 mph on Sep. 27 at Dunkirk Airport was not recognized as official because he ran too late in the day to back it up, so it was regarded as an unofficial record. He also set an unofficial elapsed time mark at Buckingham Field in Florida on Nov. 22 with an 8.19 clocking. With Malone driving the Swamp Rat 1-B car at Golden Triangle Drag Strip in Oldsmar, FL, he set a new world record for 1/8th-mile of 142.85 mph on Dec. 27. - MB; Photo: Rocky Mountain Telegram, July 3, 1959 - MB

Notes: Amazing run at Chief Auto Parts Nationals ushered in a new performance era. Dale Armstrong helped with the tuning on this National Record. Gwynn became the fastest person in NHRA history when he breaks the 5.30 second barrier by running 5.280, 5.261, 5.276, and 5.272. Gwynn also became the first person to break the 275 mph barrier with a run of 278.55. Earlier in the season, Darrell ran a quickest ever 5.342 as low qualifier at the NHRA Summers in Englishtown, NJ. The 5.261 was low qualifier at Ennis. Darrell won the World Finals over Joe Amato with best times of 5.326/274.22.

Notes: Joe Amato logged the first 5.0-second run with a 5.090/287.72 (the best speed ever) at Ennis 10/87, only to have it bettered on the last run of the day by Gene Snow with a 5.089 at just 267.06 mph. Neither driver backed up their runs for records. Photo from Indy 1987. Earlier set national record at 279.24 at the 87 Southern Nationals, 282.13 at Indy (not backed up), and 280.98 at the Keystones. Ran 5.110 and 283.73 at 87 Cragar Classic. | Amato started the '87 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January It was an eight-car field and Joe's 5.66/247.93 qualified #4. Darrell Gwynn fouled against him in the first round, and Amato's piston burning 5.80/245.23 advanced. In the semifinals, he ran 5.77/247.25, but lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.72/250. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 5.42/270.27 qualified #6. He picked up to 5.38/268.49 in the first round, over Denver Schutz's 5.65/251. Gene Snow broke against him in round two, so he advanced with a 5.47/267.45. In the semifinals, his 5.50/264.93 beat Gwynn's 5.63/241. This put Amato into the final against Don Garlits. Based on ETs, the "Old Man" had the advantage, having run a best of 5.36 during eliminations. Sure enough, Garlits set Low ET in the final with a 5.29/270 to beat Amato's 5.41/258.54. Joe's next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He beat Bob Strauss in the first round, with a 5.61/257 and in the semifinals he stopped Hank Endres. This set up a Gwynn vs. Amato final. Joe took the victory with a 5.47/265.48 (Top Speed and track record). A week later (March 22), he did it again, this time over a sixteen-car field at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #4 with a career-best (to this point) 5.32/274.80. He beat Endres in the first round, with a 5.37/272.89 while in round two another 5.32 at 276.14 (Top Speed) beat Larry Sutton. In the semifinals, he ran 5.39/257 to beat Larry Minor and for the second week in a row his final round opponent was Gwynn. Amato went on to win his eighth NHRA Career victory with a new career best of 5.29 at 274.05 to stop Darrell's close 5.30/266. He was at the Texas Motorplex on April 5 for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. It was another eight-car show and Joe qualified #7 with a 5.36/266.98. A strong 5.37/274.47 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.23/271. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Joe's 5.29/278.12 qualified #2 behind Gwynn's 5.28/274. These two would work their way to the final. Amato started his march by running 5.29/279.24 (new NHRA speed record) to beat a tire-smoking Gary Ormsby. Snow also smoked the tires against him in round two and Amato advanced with a 5.35/273.05. He got lucky in the semifinals when he ran an out of shape 5.73/253.87, but won because Earl Whiting was having his own troubles and only ran 5.86/192. This put the two former alcohol dragster drivers into the final again. This time Darrell took the win. Joe went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but lost a motor in the first round, and fell to Mike Brotherton. Back on the NHRA trail, he was at Baton Rouge on May 24 for the Cajun Nationals. He set a track record 5.30 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 272.89. Joe made his way to the final by beating Frank Bradley's 5.46/263 in the first round, with a 5.34/275.06 (Top Speed). In round two, Gwynn fouled against him and his 5.39/269.78 advanced. A semifinal 5.33/270 beat a tire blazing Hill and set up a final round meeting with Dick LaHaie. Both had run 5.33 in their semifinal races so it was close. It was a tight race, but Dick's 5.31/268 got the victory over Joe's 5.32/270.51 runner-up attempt.

Notes: Joe started the '86 season by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.47/269.46 (Top Speed and a new NHRA record). Another 5.47 at 263.15 beat a blower tossing Chris Karamesines in the first round. In round two, his 5.46/261.62 advanced when Earl Whiting broke. In the semifinals, he slowed to 5.59/260.11 and lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.54/265. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified well back in the field (#13) with a 5.64/261.17. His first-round 5.78/243.63 beat Gene Snow's 5.84/231, but in round two he lost to eventual winner Don Garlits' 5.46/246 with an early shut off 5.84/197.80. He followed the NHRA tour to Atlanta for the Southern Nationals where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.48/262.39. He took out Kalitta in round one, with a 5.61/253.87 before losing a close one to Snow in round two where both ran 5.64 (Amato at 250.41). NHRA's next stop was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. A 5.56/261.17 qualified #3. A quick-leaving 5.66/255.46 beat Ray Stutz's 5.64/242 in the first round, but in round two his 5.69/249.51 lost to Gary Beck's 5.68/245. After all those second round losses, it was good to make it into the final at the NHRA Springnationals. Joe qualified #6 with a 5.57/256.70 and in the first round, his 5.64/256.41 beat Richard Holcomb. Round two saw Amato's 5.75/207.66 take out Snow's 5.81/200 while a semifinal 5.60/253.73 beat a tire-smoking Stutz. This put Amato into the final against Kalitta. Unfortunately, Joe broke and Kalitta singled for the victory. After that, it was off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.60/254.86 and an improved 5.54/256.41 in the first round, beat Bob Simmons. Once again, he lost in round two where his 5.59/255.24 lost to Darrell Gwynn's 5.51/260. Joe also ran 271.16 at 1986 Cragar Classic.

Notes: New Ron Dixon FED in 1969. Went down to KB's shop to look at new hemis. But Charlie Allen said he had a brand new injector to pan 426 he would sell them. So they bought it and bolted it into the FED. The next weekend at Saskatoon, we ran 242 and set the track record. Folks thought it was a bogus time. But then we ran went to SIR and went 245 or 246 Doner's track. For a time, we were the fastest front engine dragster in the world. - Terry Capp, Racin & Rockin Radio, 5/04/15

Notes: My buddy Travis Perrenot sent me the following story. The most forgotten car of all time must be Kent Chatagnier and the "Kent's Speed Shop" fueler from Beaumont, Texas. Running a fuel burning Pontiac, he totally upset the world of drag racing in 1960 by running the "forgotten" 200 mile per hour runs at Houston. He made four runs that day between 197.36 and 201.78 miles per hour. He did everything that was required at that time to back up the speed, as called for by the Drag News Standard 1320 rules that were in place. Drag News published the record for several months as the "official" standard 1320 AA/FD speed record. After a while, Kent no longer was credited as being the first 200 mph run. (In early 1961, Drag News wiped all The Standard 1320 records clean and started over.) The argument through the years has been that he never did it again. Chris Karamesines did not back up his 204 at Alton and did not run close to 200 again for years. Ivo didn't back his 200 up. No one did it and backed it up until Garlits did EXCEPT that unknown kid from Beaumont Texas, Kent Chatagnier. - Harrison Inglis. | We need to confirm ET. Formerly had 7.60 listed, but that is way too quick for 1960.

Notes: Kalitta was at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 5.73/230.76, and in the first round, a costly 5.68/241.93 beat Gene Snow. It was costly as he had blackened a crank and changed engines for his semifinal race. His 5.77/242.58 lost to eventual winner Bill Mullins' quick-leaving 5.79/255. Conrad started the NHRA season by qualifying #6 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.50/261.62. He improved to career bests (to this point) of 5.42/267.06 in the first round to beat Don Durbin's 5.73/233. In the second round, Gary Beck smoked the tires against him, and Kalitta moved on with a 5.52/253.52. He took out Joe Amato in the semifinals with a 5.54/265.48 to Joe's 5.59/260. This put him into the final with Darrell Gwynn. Connie slowed to 5.72/209.79, while Gwynn got his first NHRA Top Fuel win with a 5.46/257. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he again qualified #6; this time, a 5.57/263.62 got him the spot. A 5.50/257.58 beat Gary Ormsby's 5.69/215 in the first round, but in round two, his 5.60/255.24 lost to Gary Beck's holeshot aided 5.63/257. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Kalitta was slightly off in qualifying when he ran 5.67/243.11 for the #9 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Amato. Sure enough, Amato's 5.61/253 beat Kalitta's 5.69/256.41. He qualified much better at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where a 5.52/254.30 qualified #2. Unfortunately, he lost to Ormsby's 5.57/251 in the first round, with an off-pace,6.00/182.77. Things all fell into place at the NHRA Springnationals. There, he qualified #5 with a 5.56/248.75. He advanced past a fouling Chris Karamesines in round one with a 5.76/212.86, while in round two, his 5.70/243.90 got around Ormsby, who smoked the tires. Dan Pastorini hazed the tires against him in the semifinals, and Conrad moved into the final with a 5.61/253.02. He was to run Amato for the title, but Joe broke, so Kalitta ran 5.65/217.91 to score the victory. At the end of June, the NHRA tour was in Canada for the Grandnationals. Once again, Connie qualified in the top half of the field with a 5.60/253.80 to give him the #6 spot. An improved 5.51/261.32 in the first round beat Bob Simmons, but his engine gave up in round two, and he slowed to a 6.25 that lost to Dick LaHaie's 5.43/257. Kalitta's best times of the year came in qualifying at Ennis with a great 5.397/272.47. At the world finals, Connie qualified ninth at 5.496/261.24, the exact ET and speed as number eight qualifier Eddie Hill, but he ran it after Eddie, thus getting the worse slot. However, Connie did not allow that to stop him, taking an upset win over Larry Minor in round one. He fell to Dick LaHaie in round two.

Notes: Jim Brissette car listed at 7.57/205 best in Herbert Cams ad. Confirm that it was this car and driver. | Bill started the year driving for Jim Brissette and on January 1 the team was at Riverside for the KFWB Drag Festival where Bill qualified in the eight-car field with a 7.90/199.54. Unfortunately, in the first round, he fouled away a 7.92/194.38 against Bobby Tapia. On January 3, they were at Fontana for the UDRA race, but this time Bill lost fire in the first round. Pomona held an eight-car show on January 17 and Alexander qualified with a 7.99/200.44, but he was having clutch issues and withdrew from competition. A whopping 31 cars showed up to qualify for eight positions at Lions on January 30. Bill ran 7.71/186.32 to qualify #2. He stayed strong in eliminations, running 7.88/197.80 in the first round, and 8.01/189.06 in the semifinals when Zane Schubert fouled, but in the final, his off pace 8.42/182.18 finished runner-up to Ed Pink's "Old Master" driven by Mike Snively at 8.21. Both cars smoked the tires in the final. Bill ran a best of 8.02/200.00 in attempting to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he just missed making the show. He got a break when Ron Rivero had hurt his motor in qualifying and Alexander replaced him in the field. He almost went all the way. Bill got to the final when every car he raced fouled against him. In the first two rounds, it was first Tom McEwen and then Don Garlits who both saw red, and then in the semifinals, Connie Kalitta also fouled out against him. In the final, he ran 7.92/198.22, but lost to Don Prudhomme's 7.76/201 in the "Hawaiian."

Notes: Don started this revolutionary season at Pomona, qualifying well at #10 but not dominating at 6.842/209.39. He beat Tommy Allen in round one, 6.85/208.33 to 6.89/209.79. Don improved to 6.72/211.76 to defeat Jim Nicoll's 6.85/193.54 in round two. He duplicated the 6.72 at 210.53 to beat Carl Olson's shut-off 10.81 in round three. Don easily defeated Jim Dunn in the semis, 6.70/209.79 to 7.58/146.31. In the final, Don paved the way for the rear-engine future with a 7.031/214.79 defeat of a broken Kenny Safford. Garlits put an exclamation point on things at the Gatornationals with a 6.53/226.13 low qualifying effort. He beat Jim Walther in round one, 7.06/172.08 to 7.40/192.71. However, Sarge Arciero upset him in round two, 6.63/228.42 to 6.81/188.07. Don qualified low at the Dallas Springnationals at 6.447/227.27. A solid 6.54/220.04 took out Paul Schoenfield's 8.79/110.20 in round one, and he took out west coast tough guy Don Moody in round two, 6.58/211.26 to 7.07/155.44. Don kept rolling in round three with a 6.54/200.00 win over Ronnie Martin's 6.84/208.89. He took out Kenny Safford's fouling 15.69/67.46 in the semis with a 9.96/87.12. In the final, Don took out John Wiebe to claim the title, 6.591/213.27 to 7.15/154.37. Garlits qualified #3 at the Summernationals at 6.669/223.88. He beat Richie Broughton in round one, 6.76/218.44 to 7.84/161.29, but lost to a Jim Harnsberger holeshot in round two, 6.76/205.47 to Don's 6.69/216.86. Then came Indy, where Don amazed the world with a 6.211/230.76 low qualifying effort. In round one, he beat Al Friedman, 6.28/230.17 to 6.65/223.88. A 6.32/231.36 took out John Wiebe's otherwise excellent 6.46/232.55 in round two. Don beat Summernationals winner Arnie Behling in round 3, 6.25/231.95 to a solid 6.44/224.43. He took out Carl Olson in the semis, 6.31/230.76 to 7.29/149.00. In the final, Steve Carbone beat Don in the famous "burndown" race, 6.486/229.00 to 6.65/229.00. Garlits qualified #6 at the Amarillo World Finals at 6.849/199.55. He beat Mike Tarter in round one, running 6.61/217.39 when Mike lost fire. Don beat a fouling Jerry Ruth in round two, 6.96/196.07 to 6.90/216.34. In round three, Raymond Beadle also left too soon against Don, sending him on a 7.23/145.63 to 9.86/92.21 victory. Garlits took out Clayton Harris in the semis, 6.60/217.91 to 6.72/208.81. In the final, Gerry Glenn upset the Swamp Rat with a 6.59/227.27 victory when it was Don's turn to foul away a 6.55/222.22 effort. Garlits did not run at the Ontario Supernationals this year. | 2/07/71 - Don Garlits wins NHRA Winternationals in rear-engine dragster (7.03 seconds at 214.79 mph) minus the rear wing. Also ran 6.35 National Record at US 131 on 8/71. Ran 6.53 low qualifier at Gators and 6.211 low qualifier at Indy. Beat Keeling and Clayton digger with Rick Ramsey up at Bakersfield 1971 with an ET of 6.71/223 mph to a quicker 6.64/224. BACK STORY: Don was having trouble getting the new rear-engine car to go straight. Before he figured that out (slow down the steering), he built a slingshot to race for the 1971 season. His wife Pat saw it in his garage and told him to "Get your guys together and make that rear-engine car work." They did, and the rest is history. Don provided the slingshot to Goodyear to use as a promotional display. He loaded up both cars in a small trailer and headed west. Upon arriving in California, he opened the door a crack with a number of his fellow racers in attendance. They caught a peek at the slingshot, and all began laughing, sure that Garlits had given up on his crazy rear-engine dragster idea and was going to race a conventional car. Garlits gave the car to Goodyear, then went to the AHRA race, where AHRA boss Jim Tice looked into the trailer and saw the rear-engine car in pieces (to fit both cars, it had to be disassembled). Tice ordered Garlits to put it together right at the gate so every fan coming in would see that Garlits was there and that he had this new rear-engine car. When Don got it put together and was ready to race, the slingshot drivers did not want to face him, knowing the handling disasters that previous rear-engine cars had been. Don was told to take a single and that if he touched either stripe, he was out of there. Don made a straight and true pass down the track, and he was in. He made it to the finals, where Gary Cochran got him with a holeshot in a slingshot. But the writing was on the wall, and within two years, almost every top fuel team in the country had a new rear-engine car. - Don Garlits (paraphrased), from the Racin' and Rockin' with Draglist.com radio show, July 9, 2010). | Where did Don run 244.56? Was that in 1971? The best NHRA national event speed was 231.95 at the Summers. Rick Howard photo from Edgewater Raceway Park, Cincy, Ohio.

Notes: In March, he took Swamp Rat I to Arizona and California, doing well in the former but not performing so well in California. Returning to Florida in April, he stunned the drag racing world with a world record clocking at Brooksville. On June 14, he clocked 8.48 at 182.56 mph at the Southwestern Drag News Invitational at the Freeway Drag Strip in Houston on June 14. A week later, he suffered the fateful engine explosion at Chester, South Carolina, which landed him in the hospital for weeks with second-degree burns to his hands and face. In a hospital interview, he said he would retire from drag racing. "I'm through with drag racing," he said. "I'll never race again." He sold one of his engines but kept the dragster and got Art Malone to drive it for him for the rest of the season. Photo: Lansing State Journal, June 21, 1959 - MB

He fouled away a 5.61 in the first round against Earl Whiting. He bettered his career-best in qualifying for the next NHRA event, the Gatornationals. There, he qualified #3 with a 5.48/254.09. A first-round 5.73/251.81 beat Shirley Muldowney's quicker 5.65/250. He soloed in round two with a 7.29/118.73 when Chris Karamesines could not run. In the semifinals, he had a great race with Don Garlits with "Big Daddy's" 5.50/272, winning over Dan's 5.49/256.95. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Pastorini got his first big NHRA win. He qualified #8 for the show with a 5.67/252.38, and he advanced past round one with a 7.54/101 when Jack Revelle broke a transmission. In round two, both he and Dick LaHaie smoked the tires, with Dan's 6.11/235.97 getting the win over Dick's 6.16/245. A 5.75/248.34 beat Bill Mullins' 5.78/256 in John Carey's car in the semifinals. In the final, he was up against that cagey veteran Gene Snow. The two left together, with Pastorini scoring the win with a 5.56/256.70 over the "Snowman's" 5.64/244. He got into another final at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet in May. A 5.54/243.90 qualified #2 in the eight-car show. He beat Bill Carter in round one with a 5.53, and in the semifinals, he soloed when Whiting could not run after losing an engine in the first round. In the final, Dan came up against Garlits. Once again, the "Old Man" got the win with a 5.40/271 over Pastorini's runner-up effort of 5.57/253. Dan didn't have a very productive outing at Baton Rouge in early June for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.72/236.22, and in the first round, his 5.62/250.00 lost to Muldowney's 5.57/250. National Trail had 27 cars show up to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Dan qualified #11 with a 5.63/238.60 and, in the first round, got a measure of revenge over Garlits when his 5.69/234.31 beat Don's 5.73/251. In the second round, he beat Darrell Gwynn's 5.67/250 with a 5.60/242.39. Unfortunately, he hazed his tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 6.89/127, losing to eventual winner Connie Kalitta's 5.61/253. Pastorini traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.64/256.99. He lost to low qualifier Gwynn in the first round when his 5.92/254.09 finished second to Darrell's 5.43/265. One-half of the quickest side-by-side race in history at 1986 Gators, Garlits' 5.409 to Dan's 5.491. Dan qualified #10 at the World Finals with a 5.544/256.92. He lost to Joe Amato in round one.

Notes: Shirley started the '87 season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. She qualified #2 with a 5.56/254.81 (Top Speed) behind Larry Minor's 5.50. In the first round, she overpowered the track and smoked the tires to a 7.27/113.92 in a loss to a motor-blowing Connie Kalitta. At Pomona, her 5.43/265.17 qualified #7 for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, she fell off to 5.89/201.61 and lost to Bill Mullins' 5.82/233. The next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Shirley qualified #13 with a 5.54/256.26. In the first round, she improved to 5.49/271.16 while beating Don Garlits. A second-round 5.58/263.15 lost to Darrell Gwynn's 5.26/267. She did not race at the NHRA Winston All-Star race on the Southern Nationals at Atlanta, but she was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where a 5.53/257.43 qualified #7. She beat Earl Whiting in the first round, with a 5.51/260.11. Shirley lost to a quick-leaving Eddie Hill in round where her 5.58/260.41 lost to Hill's 5.61/264. She was at the Texas Motorplex on June 6 for a four-car show. The cars each made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Muldowney's first-round 5.81/204.82 beat Ray Stutz, and she ran a career-best 5.34 (to this point) at 268.97 on a solo when Hill broke. The ET qualified her for the final, where she faced Gary Ormsby, who had run a 5.37 best. They had a close race, but Shirley's 5.38 edged Gary's 5.39 for the win. It wasn't a national event, but a win, but it was a win, and the team needed this. Columbus was the next stop for the NHRA Springnationals. She always ran well at National Trail. A 5.45/261.55 qualified #3, and a 5.49/265.17 beat Hill in the first round. But in the second round, she smoked the tires and shut off to 7.75/118.28 in a loss to Gwynn's 5.48/252. She followed the tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. There Shirley qualified #11 with a 5.78/265.72, but in the first round, her 5.85/211.26 lost to Ormsby's 5.77/260. At the NHRA Summernationals, a 5.40/268.49 qualified #6. A first-round 5.50/260.71 lost to Kalitta's 5.52/257. She skipped the NHRA Mile High Nationals but was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, where Shirley's 5.49/268.97 qualified #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Ormsby. Shirley was up to it running a 5.43/267.61 to beat Ormsby, who smoked the tires to a 5.64/259 loss. In the second round, her 5.38/270.43 beat Frank Bradley's 5.44/259. For the first time in '87, Shirley was in the semifinals of a major event. Unfortunately, her 5.44/259.06 lost to eventual winner Gwynn's 5.39/264. | Cool pink moon discs on back slicks. | I have a very nice story involving Raymond Beadle. It was 1987. We were running Shirley's PAW car at the Texas Motorplex and running a canopy at that time. We ran 284.27 mph on a qualifying run. Split the canopy in half in the lights. No spare. Beadle hands me the keys to his fab shop on Fabens Road. He says, "John. The heck with that canopy. Just go make a regular (Al Swindahl type) windshield at my shop tonight! But just don't leave a big mess, cuz Emery will blow a head gasket!" So, that's what I did. On the next run, the car ran 284.90! - John Muldowney, 10/21/14, the day after Raymond Beadle died. | NOTE: Upon reviewing the qualifying and elimination sheets, Shirley actually ran 5.177/280.63 but then ran 5.275/284.27 in a first-round win over Connie Kalitta. So, the numbers were off a bit, but John's story holds true with the improved speed after removing the canopy. - BP
