Notes: Irwindale had a big $$$ bounty on their head for them being undefeated for several weeks straight. They ran some legitimate 7.20s at many different tracks. But alas, they never toured and didn't get the fame they deserved. - Bill Duke | Confirmed 7.46-210.76 at Lions UDRA Winter Championships 2/11/66 and 7.58 at 205.94 at Bakersfield 3/66. Home built chassis, per 6/66 Drag Racing. | It's hard to say who was the winningest TF driver in '66, but it would be hard to bet against Beebe. Dave qualified fifth with a 7.82-201.76 on Jan 23 at the Jackpot Pro-Circuit race at Pomona. He set Low ET with a 7.59 over John Mulligan in the second round but he lost in the semis. At the AHRA Winternats he set Top Speed at 213.76 but failed to make it into the finals. He qualified #21 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.79 but he lost in the first round to Ronnie Hampshire. At Lions on Feb 26 for the UDRA Winternationals, he ran a 7.46-210.76 (Top Speed) to qualify second in the 32-car field and went all the way, winning over a fouling Bobby Tapia in the final. On March 26 he was at Lions for a sixteen car show. Dave qualified first with a 7.63-198.66 and ran 7.69-202.70 over Ken Safford (7.97), 7.74-203.16 over Dave Babler, and 7.74-201.78 over Bob Hightower in the semifinal. In the final he met Nick Marshall who ran a track record 7.41-199 over Beebe's 7.68-191.08. Ironically, the old track record of 7.46 was set by Dave on Feb 15. He set Top Speed again in qualifying first at 7.62-211.76 on April 2 at a 16-car field at Irwindale. A first round 7.63-211.54 beat Joe Shubert (7.72-199.24). In the second round his 7.70-210.08 beat an off pace 10.64 by John Mulligan but Danny Ongais stepped up in the semis to a 7.66-208.32 over Beebe's 7.74-205.46. The next day (April 3) at Carlsbad for the Division seven opener, Dave ran 7.71-209.78 over Steve Carbone (7.96-195.22), an 8.08-193.54 over Roy Shoults but he fouled in the semis to eventual winner Tom McEwen. He was back at Irwindale on April 9 and beat Mike Snively in the semifinal with a 7.62 putting him in the final against Tommy Allen. Unfortunately, a breaker went out and the track lost power so due to the lateness, Tommy and Dave split the purse. He won an eight car show at Lions on April 23, qualifying first with Low ET and Top Speed at 7.43-213.76. He ran 7.50-211.76 and 7.53-208.32 before winning with an 8.01-130.24 when John Mulligan fouled. The following day (April 24) he runner-upped to Tom McEwen at Pomona for the Jackpot Pro Circuit race. He got past a fouling Ron Hampshire in the first round with a 7.85-178.92 and he ran a second round solo at 7.67-180.00. In the semifinal, he beat Chuck Griffith with a 7.60-208.80. In the final, McEwen's 7.61-204 beat his 7.64-208.80. As April came to an end, Dave tried for another win at Beeline's Third Annual Fuel and Gas Championships on April 30. It was an eight car show and in the first round a 7.67-180.36 beat Ken Safford but while coming to the line to face McEwen in the semifinal, Beebe found himself with no oil pressure and shut off. He rebounded by winning an eight car show at Lions on May 7. A 7.59-204.54 qualified #4 and Dave ran 7.57-209.78 (Top Speed) and 7.67-205 to get to the final. In the final, he wasn't the quickest, but he got there first with a 7.70-208.80 beating Safford's 7.63-201 in Ted Gotelli's car. On May 8 at Carlsbad for a Jackpot Pro-Circuit race, he ran a 7.61-192.70 in the final to win over Tommy Allen's quicker 7.57-208.32. He won again on May 22 at the Division seven race at Sacramento, beating Don Cook in the final. A week later (May 28), he won a big sixteen car show at Lions. A 7.66-202.70 beat Frank Pedregon in the first round while in round two, his 7.59-207.37 beat Mulligan's quicker 7.51-204. In the semifinals, a 7.54-215.34 beat a ailing Safford and he wrapped up the win with a final round 7.53-215.30 that stopped Rick Stewart's 7.63-210. The following day he won at the Santa Maria Jackpot race. There he set low ET and top speed with a 7.92-202.24. He didn't do so well at an eight car show at Lions on June 4. Dave qualified #2 with a 7.42-211.76 and a 7.41-210.76 got past the first round but in the semifinals his car failed to fire and eventual winner Al Freeman advanced. He was back at Lions a week later where he ran 7.79 to qualify #5 in the eight car field. He lost to Mulligan's 7.51-187 in the first round with a 7.86-167.69 but John hurt his engine and was unable to continue so Beebe got back in on the "break rule." After that he stopped Nick Marshall's 7.69-204 in the semifinals with a 7.60-207.85. But in the final, he fouled away a 7.78 and lost to Carbone's 7.70. Another win came on July 23 at Irwindale when he stopped Jeep Hampshire in the final. He fouled in the final against John Edmunds on Aug 14 at the Bonneville Division seven race. Another runner-up finish came on Oct 7 at an eight car race at Carlsbad. After running 7.54-201.78 over Dominic Cardoza (8.07-200.48) and 7.44-205.46 over a motor-blowing Ronny Graham, he lined up against Leroy Goldstein in the final and he lost a motor while Goldstein won with a 7.39-194.80. The following day (Oct 8) saw Beebe qualify first with a Low ET of the meet 7.39 and then leave, not hanging around to race and just testing their new motor. They tested it good as later that day they showed up at Lion's and qualified first with a track record 7.12. He went on to run a 7.27-201.78 in the first round and a 7.30-168 in round two. In the final he faced Jack Ewell and lost, taking another runner-up finish. On Oct 15 at Irwindale, Beebe won again, setting Low ET in round one with a 7.30-208.80 over Goldstein and Top Speed with a second round 7.40-215.30 over Rick Stewart's 7.83-203.60. In the final he beat Cardoza. Another big win came on Oct 22 at the Irwindale Grand Prix. A first round 7.37-183.94 beat a fouling Gary Cassidy and a final round 7.59-200.80 beat Gerry Glenn. Pete Robinson's 7.27-203.16 got him in the final at the NHRA World Finals. Another win came his way at a sixteen car show at Irwindale on Nov 26. He took it all, qualifying first with a 7.19 which held for Low ET. He then set Top Speed at 216 and won the meet. On Dec. 26 at the UDRA Championships at Irwindale, he qualified fifth with a 7.39-217.38 and a first round 7.47-198.66 beat Bill Alexander. In the second round he lost oil pressure and shut off on the line, advancing James Warren. - Ron Howard

Notes: 144" Logghe chassis. First to run the new SOHC Ford in a dragster. Won Bakersfield. Confirmed 7.67 #6 qualifier at AHRA Beeline 1965. Set National Record on 5/22/65 at Cecil County, MD (206.42). Best ET at Cecil County was a 7.60. Kalitta ran 207.84, 208.80, and 209.78 in June at Bristol. All speeds were above track record. Ran 7.63 at Indy. He was also the first to run 200 at Beeline earlier in the year with a 7.51-200.88 at the AHRA Winternats where he debuted the Ford powered car. At Pomona, he qualified #5 with a 7.82-199.54 for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round he beat Don Yates in the "Ramchargers" car with a 7.78-198.22. In round two, a 7.83-190 beat low qualifier Art Malone's 8.14-189. In the semifinals, he fouled away a 7.99-182 against eventual winner Don Prudhomme in the "Hawaiian." On Feb 21 he was at Carlsbad for a best of three match race against Danny Ongais. He lost all three races, running a best of 7.84-198.22 while Ongais won the match with a best of 7.54-206.88. He didn't win at Bakersfield (he had won in '64), but he did run speeds of 203.16, 203.76, and 206.42 (top speed of the meet). Kalitta faced off with Don Westerdale driving the "Ramchargers" factory backed car at Detroit on April 11 for a best of three match. Conrad won the first race with an 8.38-188.66 when Don got out of shape on a 8.72 run. Unfortunately, Kalitta fouled out in both the last two races giving the match to the "Ramchargers." - Ron Howard

Ran 4.587 319.14 on 8/18/00 (#1 Qualifier) and 4.597 319.60 & 4.585 318.69 on 8/20/00 to win Brainerd in last event in Exide colors. Debuted ARMY sponsorship @ U.S. Nationals. Exide had announced a month before the 2000 season that they were going to pull the sponsorship of the team. After Exide's lawyers realized that they would have to pay the sponsorship money whether their name was on the car or not they announced they reversed their decision.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. Gene started the season on a sour note when he failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. His luck wasn't much better at the second NHRA race of the year, the Supernationals where a best of 5.14 was only good enough for second alternate. He did much better at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals when he set Low ET while qualifying first with a 5.18. Unfortunately, he broke on the line in the first round. Gene just made the field with a 5.23 (#16) at the Gatornationals but he lost in round one to Eddie Hill. He was runner-up to Connie Kalitta at the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham. His 5.35-246.68 lost to Kalitta's 5.19-276. Things started to go better when he ran a 5.14-269.54 to qualify #5 in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals in April. He did still lose in the first round however, to Frank Hawley. Another first round loss came at the next NHRA event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis where a 5.13-255.02 qualified #8 but he spun the tires and lost to Pat Dakin. It wasn't until May 21 that Gene finally got a win light and it happened at the IHRA Springnationals where he set Low ET in qualifying first with a 5.11. He won his first round race and in the semifinals, he met Dakin, and once again he smoked the tires and lost. The following week (May 28) he was at the NHRA Cajun Nationals where he qualified #11 with a 5.25-274.13 and beat Joe Amato in the first round and then a 5.30-244 got around a tire smoking Kalitta. In the semifinals, it was Dick LaHaie's turn to smoke the tires against him and Snow's 5.16-274 got him into the final. In the final, Gene ran Hawley and a 5.16-268.41 gave Gene his first win of the year. At National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #2 with a strong 5.03-287.53. He beat Chris Karamesines in the first round before smoking his tires against Hank Endres. The NHRA tour headed to Canada for the Grandnationals where Gene used a 5.30-273.39 to qualify #9. An off pace 5.75-185.26 lost in the first round to low qualifier Frank Bradley. He scored another win on July 2 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A first round 5.30-261.32 beat Karamesines and in the semi final, a 5.31-266.65 beat Dakin. In the final he met a strong running Dennis Forcelle and Gene's 5.25-275.86 beat Forcelle's close 5.29-273. It was back to the NHRA fold the following week (July 9) for the Summernationals where he qualified #7 with a 5.13-260.56. He again beat Karamesines in the first round before he smoked the tires and lost to Darrell Gwynn in the second round. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Snow set a track record 5.20 at 253.87 in qualifying first. He beat Frank Cook in the first round but again smoked the tires to a second round loss to Lori Johns. A 5.09-275.98 qualified #4 at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals on July 30. Unfortunately, he crashed during qualifying and broke his collarbone. The car was a total loss. Hard to believe, but he was back in a TF'er on August 20 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.18-273.39 and a first round 5.11-282.92 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat Hank Endres. In round two, a 5.15-277.86 beat Forcelle but in the semifinal, he ran a cylinder dropping 5.60-200 that lost to Amato's 5.16-277.

Notes: Dixon's milestone elapsed time of 4.486 seconds ended a season-long debate over which Top Fuel team would be the first to break the 4.50 second barrier. He also was low qualifier at Gainesville 4.532 ET, 321.65 MPH.

Notes: Tenth member of the Cragar 4-Second Club on Oct. 25, 1989, at Pomona, Calif. Photo from Columbus 1989. Also 5.012 at Ennis 1989. | Frank had one of his better seasons in '89. He may not have won a lot of races but he qualified strong everywhere he raced. It showed in the points standings as well when he finished the year seventh overall in NHRA. He started the year by qualifying in the dreaded #9 spot at the Winternationals with a 5.15-277.52. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Joe Amato. Frank didn't let it bother him as he beat Joe with a 5.14-277.00. In the second round, he beat Darrell Gwynn and in the semifinals, a 5.18-275.73 beat Frank Hawley. In the final, he met Gary Ormsby and Frank fell off to a 5.28-260 that lost to Gary's strong 5.06-278. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #3 but a first round 5.19 lost to Jim Head's 5.18. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals. A 5.20-274.47 qualified #9. A first round 5.23-277.00 lost to low qualifier Dick LaHaie's 5.15-282. At the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, Frank used a 5.07-285.63 to qualify #5. He beat Rudy Toepke in the first round before losing to Ormsby's 5.06-286 in the second round with a 5.10. Race six of the year was the Cajun Nationals. A 5.17-278.20 qualified #5. In the first round he beat Richard Holcomb but in round two he was caught napping by LaHaie and Dick's 5.22 beat Frank's 5.19. The next race was the Springnationals at National Trail. Once again Bradley qualified strong running a 5.06-284.18 for the #3 spot. He was upset in the first round by Lori Johns. Frank got his first pole of the season at the Grandnationals where a 5.12-282.39 (Top Speed) gave him the spot. In the first round, he beat Gene Snow with a 5.17-280.89. In round two he lost to LaHaie's 5.13-282 with a 5.17-279.93. He took his second pole of the season at the next race, the Summernationals. This time, a 5.07-285.08 gave him the position. Unfortunately, Ormsby qualified poorly and the two met in the first round with Gary getting the win. Frank didn't run so well in the thin air of Denver for the Mile High Nationals. A 5.73-211.31 just made the bump. He lost to Darrell Gwynn in the first round. He went from last to first in qualifying when the tour hit Sonoma for the California Nationals. A 5.04-286.80 gave him his third pole. He got one back from Gwynn when he beat him in the first round with a 5.06-285.08 to Darrell's 5.16-281. In the second round, a 5.08-280.46 beat a tire-smoking Mike Brotherton. In the semifinal, a 5.10-282.04 beat Gordie Bonin. He beat Joe Amato in the final for his only win of the year. He came close to scoring another pole at the next event, the Seafair Nationals at Seattle, but his 5.05-284.36 just missed Amato's 5.03 for the #1 spot. Frank beat Johns' 5.15-274 in the first round with a 5.12-284.72. But a 5.19-278.72 lost to LaHaie's 5.10-282 in the second round. At the Northstar Nationals, a 5.22-273.72 qualified Bradley #7. In the first round, both he and Amato ran 5.14's with Joe getting there first. The next race was the U.S. Nationals at Indy. Bradley qualified #10 with a 5.14 but lost to Eddie Hill in the first round. It was then on to Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. A 5.20-274.13 qualified #12. In the first round, he ran a career best (to this point) 5.02 at 281.60 over a broken Dennis Forcelle. He lasted until the second round where his 5.08-271 lost to Hill's 5.02-285. At the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Auto Parts Nationals, Bradley qualified #9. A first round 5.01-286.53 lost to low qualifier Ormsby's 4.92-294.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. Frank qualified #10 at the NHRA Supernationals and beat a tire-smoking Darrell Gwynn in the first round. A second round 5.07-273.14 beat Rudy Toepke but in the semifinals, Cook smoked the tires and lost to Gary Ormsby. He failed to qualify at the Gatornationals but was able to make the field in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals with a 5.27-265.48 for #14 spot. Another 5.27 in the first round at 275.39 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.11-275. At the sixth race of the season, the Cajun Nationals, Frank set Low ET in qualifying first with a 5.12-270.51. Unfortunately, he lost to Dick LaHaie in the first round. He showed that his qualifying was no fluke when he showed up at the Springnationals and ran a 5.08-279.41 for the #4 qualifying spot. Once again he lost in the first round, this time to Jim Head. He bypassed the Grandnationals in Canada but was at Englishtown for the Summernationals. A 5.19-272.39 qualified #8 and he did beat Shirley Muldowney in the first round but he hurt some parts while winning and was unable to run in round two. The next event was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. In the thin air, he ran a 5.40-259.51 to qualify #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Gene Snow that Frank lost. The next event on the schedule was the California Nationals. Cook qualified #10 with a 5.14-278.29. A first round 5.19-269.62 lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.09-289. He picked up the pace at the Seafair Nationals, running a 5.06-281.51 to qualify #4. A first round 5.07-283.55 beat Jack Ostrander and in round two a 5.09-276.92 beat Dennis Forcelle. In the semifinals, he slipped to a 5.22-275.39 that lost to LaHaie's 5.11-281. At the Northstar Nationals, he qualified #12 and he fouled against Muldowney in the first round. He managed to qualify at the U.S. Nationals at Indy with a 5.10-277.17 giving him the #12 spot. He lost to Joe Amato in the first round. It was then off to Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. Frank used a 5.06-285.98 to qualify #10, but once again was stopped in the first round. This time, Gwynn stopped him with a 5.00-281 to Cook's 5.18-285.62.

Notes: Photo from 1992 Winternationals. | Ed McCulloch was a strong runner in '92. It didn't start so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals when he qualified #10 with a 5.02-288.36 and lost to Doug Herbert in the first round. It still didn't look so go when the team exploded two superchargers at the NHRA Arizona Nationals. Ed finally qualified #8 with a 5.05-285.80 but in the first round, they lost another supercharger (the third) and the race to Gene Snow. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. McCulloch ran 4.94-291.73 to qualify #6. But in the first round, Bobby Baldwin stepped up to a 4.88-286 to beat Ed's 4.96-287.44. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the team barely qualified, running a 5.03-274.05 for the #15 spot. Once again he lost in the first round; this time Eddie Hill got him with a 4.89-293 to Ed's 4.92-290.41. Rockingham hosted the NHRA Winston Invitational in April. It was an eight car show and Ed ran 5.05-279.15 to qualify #6. Both he and Kenny Bernstein smoked the tires in the first round but the "Ace's" 5.46-265.01 came out on top. In the semifinals, he ran his best time at the meet, a 5.02-284.36, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 4.96-280.

Notes: The second of three top fuel cars that Prudhomme ran in 1971, this car had a 220 inch John Buttera chassis, a Keith Black Hemi and a body designed & built by Quinn Epperly and Nye Frank. The car also had Kirby paint and Kelly lettering. It won Best Engineered at the 1971 NHRA Springnationals but proved too heavy to be competitive. Don ran the car with the wedge body thru the summer but removed the heavy body work by Indy and installed a wing. The highlight for this car came when it lost the then quickest side by side race in drag racing history. The race took place at OCIR during the PDA Championships in July. Don ran 6.41, 234.98 losing to Rick Ramsey's 6.41, 229.50. Qualified at Indy at 6.433. Don replaced this car in November when he took delivery of the 1190 lbs. Kent Fuller built "Yellow Feather."

Notes: California Chargers. Ran 6.51 national record at Fremont CA on 6-26-71. Ran 6.41, 229.59 at OCIR (Chuck Johnson provided a photo of the record jacket) winning a side by sider against Don Prudhomme at 6.41, 234.98. #7721 changed to #723 in 1972. Runner-up at Bakersfield 1971 to Don Garlits. Lost on a holeshot, Don's 6.71, 223 mph to Rick's quicker 6.64, 224. Also 6.61 OCIR track record earlier in the year. | Chuck Johnson on the records: The following is the Extent of my personal record keeping on the matter. I don't remember dates, but I remember this being just before Garlits ran the first offset axle at Indy. The resulting 6.21 run picked up .2 sec. on the rest of the quick cars in the country. The California Charger had recently set the National Record in Fremont and held it for a whole 2 weeks before Garlits set yet another new record. Ran 6.584 at Indy.

Notes: Number 3 at Indy 72 at 6.197, 221.67, then ran quickest ever the time 6.06 in eliminations. No records could be set at this race, however. Also 6.13 at Seattle and 6.16 at Lions Last Drag Race 12/72. | Ruth dominated the third race of NHRA's Division Six. The race was run at Mission B.C. on June 18. He only qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.70. That set up a first-round race with low qualifier Herm Petersen. In that race, Ruth stepped it up to a 6.25-232.55 to beat Herm's 6.35-229. In the semifinals, he beat Gary Beck with a 6.20 (Low ET) at 231.95. In the final, he took the victory by beating Hank Johnson's 6.69 with a 6.22-235.60 (Top Speed).
