Notes: Ruth started the season at the AHRA Winternationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.28/234 but lost to Don Garlits in the final. He qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, hitting 5.80 for the top spot and a first-round 5.85/243 that beat Gene Snow. In the second round, a 5.95/240 lost to Richard Tharp's 5.83/243. On March 8, he went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 5.96/234.98 qualified #5. He beat Gary Beck in the first round, with a 6.00/225.56, and when Dennis Baca lost fire in round two, he singled with a 5.92/221.67 into the semifinal. Unfortunately, paired against Shirley Muldowney, he smoked the tires to an 8.35 and lost to her 5.84 Low ET blast. In July, he ran a best of 6.16/230.17 at the NHRA Mile High Nationals, which was good for the #3 alternate. On August 16, he was at Bonneville Raceway for the AHRA Western Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.91 and in the first round, a 6.03/228 beat Junior Kaiser. In the semifinal, the "King" met the "King," Ruth beat Garlits with a slower 6.02/228 to Don's 6.00/245. In the final, he met the "Queen" as he faced off against Shirley. It took a new track record 5.90 at 236 to win over her 6.03/231. He faced her in the final again the following week at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. He set a new AHRA ET record of 5.57 in qualifying and ran 5.82/237 over Chris Karamesines and 5.98/219 in the semifinal over a fouling Garlits. In the final, Ruth's 5.74/238 beat Shirley's 5.89. He qualified #4 with a 5.72 at the NHRA US Nationals, but as mentioned above, he lost the quickest side-by-side race ever in the first round, when Connie Kalitta's 5.74 beat his 5.77. Garlits got one back from Ruth at the AHRA Autumn Nationals at Seattle. The two met in the finals, and Don's 5.97 beat Jerry's close 5.89 for the title. In October, Ruth ran at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. There, a 5.85/233.16 qualified #11. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.95/222.77 wasn't good enough to get around Jeb Allen's 5.73/244.56. He qualified much better at the NHRA World Finals, where a 5.74/238.09 notched the #4 spot. A better 5.72/242.58 beat Kalitta (5.83/236) in the first round, but in round two, a sleepy 6.09 lost to Dwight Salisbury's 6.11. |

Notes: The second of three top fuel cars that Prudhomme ran in 1971, this car had a 220-inch John Buttera chassis, a Keith Black Hemi, and a body designed & built by Quinn Epperly and Nye Frank. The car also had Kirby paint and Kelly lettering. It won Best Engineered at the 1971 NHRA Springnationals, but proved too heavy to be competitive. Don ran the car with the wedge body through the summer, but removed the heavy body work by Indy and installed a wing. The highlight for this car came when it lost the then quickest side by side race in drag racing history. The race took place at OCIR during the PDA Championships in July. Don ran 6.41/234.98, losing to Rick Ramsey's 6.41/229.50. Qualified at Indy at 6.433. Don replaced this car in November when he took delivery of the 1190 lb. Kent Fuller built "Yellow Feather." |

Notes: Rick qualified #6 at Pomona at 6.824/199.55. He beat Don Prudhomme in round one, 7.16/204.08 to 7.69/146.57. He lost to Carl Olson in round two, 6.92/211.24 to 7.06/208.81. Rick was runner-up at Bakersfield 1971 to Don Garlits. He lost on a holeshot, Don's 6.71/223 mph to Rick's quicker 6.64/224. At the Dallas Springnatinoals, Rick qualified #24 at 6.751/208.33. He won round one over a fouling Mike Snively, 8.24/115.83 to 11.14/59.52, but fouled himself against Jim Nicoll and lost in round two, 8.20-96.77 to Rick's 7.29/148.27. Rick set a 6.51 national record at Fremont, CA, on 6/26/71. The team qualified #10 at Indy at 6.504/208.33 but fouled against Tom Kaiser in round one, tossing out an excellent 6.51. Rick qualified #32 at the Ontario Supernationals at 6.938/174.41. He improved in round one but still lost to Ted Thomas, 6.72/213.77 to Rick's 6.77/161.57. Rick ran 6.41/229.59 at OCIR (Chuck Johnson provided a photo of the record jacket), winning a side by sider against Don Prudhomme at 6.41/234.98. Also, set a 6.61 OCIR track record earlier in the year. | Chuck Johnson on the records: The following is the extent of my personal record keeping on the matter. I don't remember the dates, but this was just before Garlits ran the first offset axle at Indy. The resulting 6.21 run picked up .2 seconds on the rest of the quick cars in the country. The California Chargers had recently set the National Record in Fremont and held it for a whole two weeks before Garlits set yet another new record. |

Notes: Frank was at Firebird for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He only made one tire-smoking, shut off 19.51 pass. Obviously, he failed to qualify. He then went to Pomona, where he showed how well he could drive. On a qualifying attempt, he broke a wing strut. He handled the car perfectly and brought it to a safe stop. For a lesser driver, it could have gone a lot worse. He repaired it and came back out to run a career-best 5.50/257.43 to qualify #10. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round against Gene Snow and shut off to 6.07/165.68. He was the first alternate at the NHRA Gatornationals with a best of 5.59/258.99, and a 5.69/253.09 was the second alternate at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where a first-round 5.78/249.30 beat Snow, but he lost to Darrell Gwynn in the semifinals. Frank did not race at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, but he went to Tulsa for its independent Springnationals. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 5.61 (Low ET) at 255.68 (Top Speed and a new track record). He and Dan Pastorini had a good race in round one, with Frank's 5.69/249.30 beating Pastorini's 5.75/250. Another close race followed in the semifinals, where Bradley's 5.77/213.27 beat Eddie Hill's 5.80/252. This put Frank into the final against Snow. Bradley got the victory with a consistent 5.63/252.80 over the "Snowman's" tire-smoking 6.88/122. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, Frank ran 5.57/254.61 to qualify #9. He improved to a new career-best 5.46 at 263.00 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Joe Amato's 5.34/275. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Frank's 5.48/251.81 qualified #5. A first-round 5.60/219.94 beat Earl Whiting, but a 5.61/218.34 in the second round lost to eventual winner Dick LaHaie's 5.38/262. He followed the NHRA Tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where a 5.56/262.31 qualified #7. He beat Don Garlits in the first round but broke and rear end doing it and was unable to fix it in time for round two. Shortly after that, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.44 qualified #8, and he ran 5.49/261.02 to defeat John Carey's 5.73/199 in the opening round. He ran his best time of the weekend in round two, a 5.42/261.70, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Darrell Gwynn's 5.38/264. His next stop was at Kansas City International for its Summernationals race. It was an eight-car field, and Bradley's 5.59 qualified #4He beat Ray Moats in the first round with a 5.61/263.15, and in the semi-final, both he and Snow ran 5.64 (Frank at 264.70), with the "win" light coming on in his lane. He faced Dan Pastorini in the final, and Frank's 5.57/261 got the victory over Dan's 5.64/247. Near the end of July, he went to Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. There he qualified #7 at 5.58/253.37. Most importantly, he made his first NHRA national event final since '84. In round one, Glenn Mikres 5.73/233 lost to Frank's 5.66/249.93. He then beat Bill Mullins' 5.80/233 in round two with a 5.65/248.41. He had a very close race against low qualifier Dick Lahaie in the semi-final. Dick smoked the tires but still ran 5.61/250 and lost to Frank's 5.62/249.03. He faced Amato in the final, and this time Bradley smoked the tires. His 5.71/246.17 finished runner-up to Joe's 5.47/251. He continued to lower his career-best, and it now dropped down to 5.36 at Brainerd. His 5.36/261.09 qualified #5 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. In the first round, he ran 5.47/257.28 over Connie Kalitta's 5.60/255. Unfortunately, in round two, a 5.44/259.89 fell to Shirley Muldowney's 5.38/270.30 cars were attempting to qualify at Indy, and Bradley's 5.34/269.46 qualified #6. Jack Ostrander was late off the line in the first round, and his 5.41/271 lost to Frank's 5.42/265.56. In round two, he ran a great 5.39/266.42 and lost to Amato's even better 5.37/273. Notes: Photo from the 1976 Popular Hot Rodding Championships, US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan. Shirley won the NHRA Springnationals. | Shirley started the '76 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where she qualified #3 with a 6.16. She beat Larry Dixon's 6.73 in the first round, with a 6.34, but in round two, Bob Struksnes' 6.43/224 beat her ailing 7.28/141.73. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, her 6.20/239.36 failed to qualify. On February 21, she was at OCIR's East vs. West meet. There were six cars there that made three runs each. In Muldowney's first race, her 6.14/199.11 beat Rick Ramsey who had a blower explode. In her second race, James Warren's 6.27/171 beat her 6.49/182. In the final race, she had problems and shut down to 10.50-61 in a loss to Larry Dixon's 6.26/233. Shirley ran at Famoso on March 7 for the Bakersfield March Meet, where her 6.34 qualified #27 in the 32 car field. Her first-round race affected the outcome of all the races that ran after hers. She lost her race against Jerry Ruth, and her motor let go and oiled down the lane. The track tried to "fix" it, but almost every winner after that came from the opposite lane. Not sure why, but Muldowney bypassed the NHRA Gatornationals. She was at Amarillo on May 2 for the IHRA World Nationals but lost a tire-smoking battle with Pat Dakin in the first round. Her 6.55 lost to Pat's 6.41. She competed at the IHRA Dixie Nationals on May 23 but failed to reach the finals. Then things began to click for Shirley. She went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, and everything went right. A 6.03/229.00 qualified #1, and a 6.07/228 beat Frank Holden in the first round. Paul Longenecker fell to her 6.03/240 in round two, and Ted Wolf driving the "Jade Grenade," lost to her 6.11 in the semifinals. In the final, she ran Bob Edwards, and she wrapped up the event with a 5.96/243.90 (Low ET and Top Speed) for her first NHRA National event title. It was an impressive outing. It was funny, though, when a week later, she went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals and qualified last in the sixteen-car field and lost in round one. The highs and lows of racing. Shirley did better on July 4 at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals. She enjoyed beating Richard Tharp immensely (no love lost between these two) in the semifinals with a 6.12/235.60, but she lost to Don Garlits in the final. On July 17, she raced Garlits in a best of three match at Seattle, in which she was not too happy that the "old man" won. In August, Shirley was at US 131, Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. 29 cars tried to qualify for the sixteen-car show, and she qualified #13 with a 6.20. In the first round, her 6.31/215.31 lost to Jeb Allen's 6.10/213. At Indy for the US Nationals, Shirley ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.89 to qualify #5 in the 32 car field. She improved her best to a 5.86 at 241.85 in the first round, while beating Don Reed. In the second round, Tom Kaiser's 6.11/236 fell to the lady's 6.05/241.28. In round three, Gary Beck dropped her with a 5.79/245 to Shirley's 5.97/233.16. At the next NHRA event, the Fallnationals at Seattle, Muldowney showed up with a new Attebury built car. She made an easy check-out pass of 6.34/159 then got down to business. A 6.02/242.58 qualified #9, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier James Warren. Shirley ran another 6.02 in that first-round race, but it wasn't enough as James took the win with a 5.89. Shirley ended the season by giving everyone a preview of what '77 was like. At Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, she qualified #1 with a 5.77/249.30 (Low ET and Top Speed). The speed was the fastest run in '76. Shirley ran 5.99, 5.87, and 5.84 over in order, Terry Capp, John Rodeck, and Dennis Baca to met "The King," Jerry Ruth in the final. Ruth was no slouch, running a best of 5.93 on the way to the finals. But this was Shirley's day, and she cracked off a 5.94 at a whopping 248.61 to take her second NHRA win. |

Notes: Fastest run in the sport's history before Bernstein ran 301.70 at the Gators about a month later. | Mike made his Top Fuel debut at the NHRA Arizona Nationals in February driving Jack Clark's car. He qualified #3 with a 4.98/290.97, but he fell off to a 5.10/265.17 in the first round, that lost to Don Prudhomme's 4.94/289. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, Dunn ran 4.92/293.25 to qualify #5. He improved to 4.89 at a track record speed of 297.12 to beat Gene Snow's 4.97/285 in the first round. Unfortunately, a round two 5.00/288.55 lost to Cory McClenathan's 4.92/290. Gainesville was the next stop for the NHRA tour for the Gatornationals. There Mike's 5.00/282.13 qualified #13. In the first round Joe Amato broke against him and his 4.96/288 advanced. But in round two he lost to Mike Brotherton. |

Notes: After a multi-year contract with TRW ended over the Winter of '89, Amato found new sponsorship from Valvoline for '90. He had finished #2 in the NHRA points chase in '89 and was hoping to do better in '90. Joe started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where the new 3.20 rear-end rule didn't seem to slow him down. He qualified #3 with a 5.03/282.39 (Top Speed), but in the first round, he dropped a cylinder and slowed to 5.24/253.66 in a loss to Don Prudhomme's 5.15/270. The next race was the Arizona Nationals. Amato qualified #5 with a 4.99 at a track record speed of 282.92. He then went on to win by beating Connie Kalitta with a 5.04/281.07; a 5.03/275.48 in round two beat Frank Bradley's 5.11/271, and a 5.08/273.97 in the semifinals stopped Gene Snow's 5.12/268. Joe faced '89 NHRA Top Fuel Champion Gary Ormsby in the final, and Joe's 5.05/275.14 got the victory over Ormsby's 5.11. This was his first NHRA victory in eight months. He qualified #5 again at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. This time a 4.99/280.37 got him the spot. In round one, Joe beat Top Fuel rookie Ken Koretsky with a 5.08/276.66, while a 5.04/271.98 took out Leo Gastellum in round two. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 7.91/140.09 loss against Snow, who also had problems at 7.23/114. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.06/282.84 qualified #3. Both he and his first-round opponent, Eddie Hill, smoked the tires in the first round, and Eddie's 5.98/256 got to the line before Joe's 6.24/203.06. He then won the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham early in April. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.04/279.58 (Top Speed) qualified second behind Darrell Gwynn's 4.94/277. These two would reach the final together. In the opening round, Joe's 5.02/277.34 beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.14/272, and he beat the other former Funny Car driver, Prudhomme, in the semifinal with a 5.01 279.06, which beat the "Snake's" 5.24/265. Both he and Gwynn had run similar times to reach the final, and Amato even had lane choice. But it was Amato's driving that got the win as he was first off the line, and his 5.04/272.64 outran Gwynn's 5.02/277. Sadly, that was the last NHRA event Gwynn ran due to his accident in England on Easter. Joe set a track record 4.96 in qualifying #1 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His speed on the run was 280.11. The car slowed to 5.14/272.14 in the opening round, but it was still enough to beat Gastellum's 5.26/269. Another 5.14 at 273.63 defeated Jim Head's 5.21/265 in round two. The team found the problem for their slower times was a weak fuel pump. It was changed for his semifinal race with Bradley and Joe shot to 5.00/287.17 to win over Frank, who overpowered the track and smoked the tires. The speed was tops for the race and was five miles per hour faster than any other run made there. He faced Lori Johns in the final, and both ran 5.02 (Amato at 282.30), but the lady crossed the stripe first. These two would also face off in the final at NHRA's next event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Joe's career-best (to this point) of 4.941/288.46 qualified #1 and broke both ends of the track record. He got lucky in the first round, as he blew his engine on his "odd-lot" solo. The crew installed a new "bullet" for round two, and his 5.02/274 beat Snow's 5.07. Both he and Johns ran 4.99 in winning their semifinal races, with Amato having the better speed at 282 while beating Bernstein. But once again, Amato finished runner-up to Johns as he smoked the tires while she ran 5.00/270 to win. Aside from qualifying #1 with a 5.03 (Low ET) at 281.95, the NHRA Cajun Nationals was not a great race for the team. Only 15 cars showed, so he got a solo in round one, before fouling against Snow in round two. Things went better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 5.04/279.06 qualified second to Frank Hawley's 5.04/275 in Gwynn's car. He stayed in the 5.0 zone by beating Koretsky's 5.33/266 in the opening round with a 5.09/275.98 and a 5.06/277 in round two beat Bradley. In the semifinal, he fell off to 5.13/272.47, but it was still enough to stop Dick Lahaie's 5.16/267. Joe was going into his 45th NHRA Top Fuel final. The two lowest qualifiers met in the final, and Hawley's 5.12/278 got an emotional victory over Amato's 5.22/272.47. Plus 4.939 low qualifier at the 1990 Chief Auto Parts Nationals. He ran 4.955 at Englishtown. Speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from Indy 1990. |

Notes: Ran 4.983 at NHRA Indianapolis on September 3/1989, to become the sixth member of the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel. Photo from Columbus 1989. Confirmed 287.63 MPH at Ennis Fall 89, but MPH from Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 1., Winter 89/90 listed 287.90. Where was that run? | The Miller American cars were owned by Dick LaHaie, not Larry Minor. Larry had the sponsorship deal and got Dick to run his car under the colors while Minor raced his own (ex Gary Beck) car and the funny cars. - Dick LaHaie, Racin & Rockin Radio, 2/24/14 | LaHaie finished the season third in points. I'm sure he went into the year expecting to win more than the three national event wins that he got. But it was still more NHRA wins than he had gotten in '88. The season started with Dick running 5.16/279.32 to qualify #11 at the Winternationals. He lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.05/288 in the first round, with a 5.09/277.43. At the Supernationals, a 5.07 gave him the dreaded #9 qualifying spot and setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Joe Amato which he lost. He qualified in the top half of the show at the Gatornationals when a 5.13 was good for the #6 position. He got past the first-round for the first time this season, but in the second round, he had a tire-smoking battle with Hank Endres and lost. Things had to change and they did at the next event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. LaHaie took the pole with a 5.10/281.69. He beat Frank Bradley's 5.23/277 in the first round, with a 5.15/282.92 (Top Speed). In round two a consistent 5.16/278.46 beat Frank Hawley and in the semifinals a 5.18/279.32 beat Lori Johns. He went on to take his first victory of '89 with a final round 5.13/281.77 over Eddie Hill's 5.19/267. The NHRA tour then swung to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals where Dick qualified #6 with a 5.10/284.18. He beat Kalitta in the first round, and a 5.08/284 beat Johns' 5.19 in round two. But in the semifinals against Hill, he had a strut that held the rear wing in place break. It unloaded the car and LaHaie did a great job in bringing the car to a safe stop. The sixth race of the season was the Cajun Nationals. Once again he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.24/277.09 setting up a first-round run against low qualifier Frank Cook. This time, LaHaie won the first-round race and in round two he left on Bradley and won with a 5.22/277 to Frank's quicker 5.19. He overpowered the track in the semifinals and smoked the tires to a loss against Gene Snow. A 5.10/286.07 qualified #8 at the next race, the Springnationals. He beat Paul Smith in round one, but in the second round be lost to Jim Head when they both smoked the tires. It was up to Canada for the Grandnationals in late June. He ran a 5.21/280.54 to qualify #5. A first-round 5.20/279.67 beat John Carey. He improved to a 5.13/282.13 in round two to beat Bradley's 5.17/279. In the semifinals, Amato's 5.25/268 fell to Dick's 5.14/279.58. In the final, he ran Gary Ormsby and a 5.21/274.55 was good for the runner-up spot to Gary's 5.15/278. LaHaie got his second win at the next race, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 with a 5.10/283.37 and took out Carey in the first round. In the second round, he ran a solo 5.19/275 when Cook was unable to show. In the semifinals, a 5.15/280 beat a tire-smoking Hill. In the final, he reversed the outcome of the last race when he met Ormsby. A final 5.11/282.04 gave Gary's 5.24/271 the runner-up spot. The thin air of Denver was the next stop for the Mile High Nationals. Dick ran a 5.26/270.51 in qualifying #4. He beat Mike Brotherton in round one, and a 5.35/244 beat Darrell Gwynn in round two, but in the semifinals, both he and Amato ran 5.22's with Amato getting the win. From there it was off to Sonoma for the California Nationals where a 5.06/283.64 qualified #3. He beat Lori Johns in the first round, with a 5.07/281.60, but he broke and was unable to run Gordie Bonin in round two. Dick was runner-up at the next stop, the Seafair Nationals at Seattle. He qualified #6 with a 5.09/285.53 and in round one, a 5.11/283.82 beat Bonin's 5.52. In round two, a consistent 5.10/282.84 beat Bradley's 5.19/278. A semifinal 5.11/281.42 beat Cook's 5.22/275. But even though he stayed consistent in the final with a 5.10/278.98 he lost to a strong running Amato at 5.01/278. At the thirteenth race of the season, the Northstar Nationals, Dick qualified #1 with a 5.12/279.85. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires to a 6.33/160.82 first-round loss to Dennis Forcelle. He ran Indianapolis' first four during qualifying, a 4.98/285.44 that eventually held for the #2 qualifying spot. LaHaie beat Pat Dakin in the first round, and in round two, a 5.06/276.20 beat Johns' 5.13/274. In the semifinals, a 5.01/280.72 beat a tire-smoking Amato. In the final, he ran Darrell Gwynn and he overpowered the track to a shut off 17.11/48.44 while Darrell took the win with a 5.04/280. |
