Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. Gene started the season on a sour note when he failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. His luck wasn't much better at the second NHRA race of the year, the Supernationals where a best of 5.14 was only good enough for second alternate. He did much better at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals when he set low ET while qualifying first with a 5.18. Unfortunately, he broke on the line in the first round. Gene just made the field with a 5.23 (#16) at the Gatornationals but he lost in round one. Things started to go better when he ran a 5.14-269.54 to qualify #5 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals in April. He did still lose in the first round however, to Frank Hawley. Another first round loss came at the next NHRA event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis where a 5.13-255.02 qualified #8 but he spun the tires and lost to Pat Dakin. It wasn't until May 21 that Gene finally got a win light and it happened at the IHRA Springnationals where he set low ET in qualifying first with a 5.11. He won his first round race and in the semi-finals, he met Dakin, and once again he smoked the tires and lost. The following week (May 28) he was at the NHRA Cajun Nationals where he qualified #11 with a 5.25-274.13 and beat Joe Amato in the first round and then a 5.30-244 got around a tire smoking Connie Kalitta. In the semi-finals, it was Dick LaHaie's turn to smoke the tires against him and Snow's 5.16-274 got him into the final. In the final, Gene ran Hawley and a 5.16-268.41 gave Gene his first win of the year. At National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #2 with a strong 5.03-287.53. He beat Chris Karamesines in the first round before smoking his tires against Hank Endres. The NHRa tour headed to Canada for the Grandnationals where Gene used a 5.30-273.39 to qualify #9. A off pace 5.75-185.26 lost in the first round to low qualifier Frank Bradley. He scored another win on July 2 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A first round 5.30-261.32 beat Karamesines and in the semi final, a 5.31-266.65 beat Dakin. In the final he met a strong running Dennis Forcelle and Gene's 5.25-275.86 beat Forcelle's close 5.29-273. It was back to the NHRA fold the following week (July 9) for the Summernationals where he qualified #7 with a 5.13-260.56. He again beat Karamesines in the first round before he smoked the tires and lost to Darrell Gwynn in the second round. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Snow set a track record 5.20 at 253.87 in qualifying first. He beat Frank Cook in the first round but again smoked the tires to a second round loss to Lori Johns.

Notes: Tenth member of the Cragar 4-Second Club on Oct. 25, 1989, at Pomona, Calif. Photo from Columbus 1989. Also 5.012 at Ennis 1989. Frank had one of his better seasons in '89. He may not have won a lot of races but he qualified strong everywhere he raced. It showed in the points standings as well when he finished the year seventh overall in NHRA. He started the year by qualifying in the dreaded #9 spot at the Winternationals with a 5.15-277.52. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Joe Amato. Frank didn't let it bother him as he beat Joe with a 5.14-277.00. In the second round, he beat Darrell Gwynn and in the semi-finals, a 5.18-275.73 beat Frank Hawley. In the final, he met Gary Ormsby and Frank fell off to a 5.28-260 that lost to Gary's strong 5.06-278. He went through a bit of a slow spell at the next couple races before returning to form at the Southern Nationals. A 5.20-274.47 qualified #9. A first round 5.23-277.00 lost to low qualifier Dick LaHaie's 5.15-282. At the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, Frank used a 5.07-285.63 to qualify #5. He beat Rudy Toepke in the first round before losing to Ormsby's 5.06-286 in the second round with a 5.10. Race six of the year was the Cajun Nationals. A 5.17-278.20 qualified #5. In the first round he beat Richard Holcomb but in round two he was caught napping by LaHaie and Dick's 5.22 beat Frank's 5.19. The next race was the Springnationals at National Trail. Once again Bradley qualified strong running a 5.06-284.18 for the #3 spot. He was upset in the first round by Lori Johns. Frank got his first pole of the season at the Grandnationals where a 5.12-282.39 (top speed) gave him the spot. In the first round, he beat Gene Snow with a 5.17-280.89. In round two he lost to LaHaie's 5.13-282 with a 5.17-279.93. He took his second pole of the season at the next race, the Summernationals. This time, a 5.07-285.08 gave him the position. Unfortunately, Ormsby had qualified poorly and the two met in the first round with Gary getting the win. Frank didn't run so well in the thin air of Denver for the Mile High Nationals. A 5.73-211.31 just made the bump. He lost to Darrell Gwynn in the first round. He went from last to first in qualifying when the tour hit Sonoma for the California Nationals. A 5.04-286.80 gave him his third pole. He got one back from Gwynn when he beat him in the first round with a 5.06-285.08 to Darrell's 5.16-281. In the second round, a 5.08-280.46 beat a tire-smoking Mike Brotherton. In the semi-final, a 5.10-282.04 beat Gordie Bonin. He beat Joe Amato in the final for his only win of the year. He came close to scoring another pole at the next event, the Seafair Nationals at Seattle, but his 5.05-284.36 just missed Amato's 5.03 for the #1 spot. Frank beat Johns' 5.15-274 in the first round with a 5.12-284.72. But a 5.19-278.72 lost to LaHaie's 5.10-282 in the second round. At the Northstar Nationals, a 5.22-273.72 qualified Bradley #7. In the first round, both he and Amato ran 5.14's with Joe getting there first. The next race was the U.S. Nationals at Indy. Bradley qualified #10 with a 5.14 but lost to Eddie Hill in the first round. It was then on to Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. A 5.20-274.13 qualified #12. In the first round, he ran a career best (to this point) 5.02 at 281.60 over a broken Dennis Forcelle. He lasted until the second round where his 5.08-271 lost to Hill's 5.02-285. At the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Auto Parts Nationals,bBradley qualified #9. A first round 5.01-286.53 lost to low qualifier Ormsby's 4.92-294.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. Frank qualified #10 at the NHRA Supernationals and beat a tire-smoking Darrell Gwynn in the first round. A second round 5.07-273.14 beat Rudy Toepke but in the semi-finals, Cook smoked the tires and lost to Gary Ormsby. He failed to qualify at the Gatornationals but was able to make the field at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals with a 5.27-265.48 for #14 spot. Another 5.27 in the first round at 275.39 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.11-275. At the sixth race of the season, the Cajun Nationals, Frank set low ET in qualifying first with a 5.12-270.51. Unfortunately, he lost to Dick LaHaie in the first round. He showed that his qualifying was no fluke when he showed up at the Springnationals and ran a 5.08-279.41 for the #4 qualifying spot. Once again he lost in the first round, this time to Jim Head. He bypassed the Grandnationals in Canada but was at Englishtown for the Summernationals. A 5.19-272.39 qualified #8 and he did beat Shirley Muldowney in the first round but he hurt some parts while winning and was unable to run in round two. The next event was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. In the thin air, he ran a 5.40-259.51 to qualify #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Gene Snow that Frank lost. The next event on the schedule was the California Nationals. Cook qualified #10 with a 5.14-278.29. A first round 5.19-269.62 lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.09-289. He picked up the pace at the Seafair Nationals, running a 5.06-281.51 to qualify #4. A first round 5.07-283.55 beat Jack Ostrander and in round two a 5.09-276.92 beat Dennis Forcelle. In the semi-finals, he slipped to a 5.22-275.39 that lost to LaHaie's 5.11-281. At the Northstar Nationals, he qualified #12 and he fouled against Muldowney in the first round. He managed to qualify at the U.S. Nationals at Indy with a 5.10-277.17 giving him the #12 spot. He lost to Joe Amato in the first round. It was then off to Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. Frank used a 5.06-285.98 to qualify #10, but once again was stopped in the first round. This time, Gwynn stopped him with a 5.00-281 to Cook's 5.18-285.62.

Notes: Likely Haase's greatest accomplishment this year was in June, taking Top Fuel Eliminator at the 2nd Annual Hot Rod Magazine Championship at Riverside. Though qualifying in the middle of a 32-car field, Haase outlasted the likes of Yeakel Plymouth (McEwen), The Surfers (Sororkin), the Hawaiian (Prudhomme), the Bounty Hunter and Gotelli-Milani. The final found him paired against the highly favored James Warren in the Warren-Crow car. Both cars encountered problems on the trophy run but it was Haase who crossed the finish first. -- RT | Ran a 7.75 at Indy US Nationals 9-65.

He only qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.70. That set up a first-round race with low qualifier Herm Petersen. In that race, Ruth stepped it up to a 6.25-232.55 to beat Herm's 6.35-229.
