Notes: John 'The Black Knight' Edmunds. First piston driven car over 220 at Carlsbad, California. Photo from 1967. | John was driving for Tony Waters on April 29 at an eight car show at Irwindale. He made it to the final by beating the "Speedmasters" in round one and Edmunds set top speed in round two at 222.76 while beating Ray Ayers. In the final he was up against Ken Safford in Ted Gotelli's car. John ran 7.60-219.50 but it fell short, losing to Safford's 7.59-209 in a close final. The next day (April 30), these same two would meet in the final again, this time at Fresno. The results were the same with Safford taking the victory over Edmunds. On May 7, Waters and Edmunds were at Carlsbad for the NHRA Division Seven race. John set a new NHRA speed record during qualifying at 226.70. Unfortunately, in round one,he lost a close race to Tommy Allen. John's 7.29 barely lost to Tommy's 7.28.

Notes: B&M began 1968 with the old Sam Vincent chassis that was front-halved by Frank Huszar. Ran 6.914 at Bakersfield 68. At the NHRA Springnationals in Englishtown set Low ET (6.65) but had tire problems in the final, losing to Garlits. Was #5 qualifier at Indy 1968 at 6.852, and Top Speed at 233.76. Also, 229.59 mph at OCIR WCS points meet on 9/14/68. The Beebe & Mulligan car held the NHRA speed record at 229.59 mph from September 1968 until July 1970. Also ran four of the quickest 13 ETs and three of the fastest 13 speeds in 1968. In October 1968 they debuted their new Woody car at the World Finals and were runner-up to Bennie Osborn. These guys kicked butt and they should have won a lot more races. Definitely on top of their game in '68. | Started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. John won his first round race with a 7.22-216 over Danny Ongais in the "Beaver Brothers" car, but the team didn't last long after that as their high horsepower combination was too much for the track. On Jan 28 they were at Irwindale for an eight car show. Mulligan qualified on the "bubble" with a 7.27-182.92 and in the first round, an off pace 7.51-160.42 lost to James Warren's 7.07-218. On Feb 4, John qualified #19 in the 32 car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.16-217.90. In the first round, John was caught napping, as his 6.96-222.76 lost to Mike Snively's 7.08-219 in the "Hawaiian." On March 3, the team was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. Mulligan lasted until the second round where a seven cylinder 7.21 lost to Marvin Schwartz. Tim Beebe got the horsepower to the ground during qualifying at the Bakersfield March Meet when John laid down a 6.91-231.36 to qualify first. He had Low ET of the first round as well with a winning 6.94. But he failed to reach the semifinals. On March 24, Beebe and Mulligan where at Riverside for the HRM Championships. John lasted until round two before losing to the eventual winner Steve Carbone. The team got it's first win of '68 on April 6 at Irwindale. And they didn't even qualify. John was first alternate in the sixteen car show but he got in when one car fell out with problems. He made the best of it by running a first round 7.00 (Low ET) at 222.22 over the "Beaver Brothers." In round two, he set Top Speed with a 7.03-230.16 win over James Warren. In the final he beat Ray Ayres for the victory. They were back at Irwindale on May 4, but in the first round, a 7.11-226.12 (Top Speed) lost to Bob Hightower's 7.09-223 in the "Mr Ed" car. Tim was having trouble keeping the big Hemi lit at OCIR on May 25 for a sixteen car show. John advanced past the first round with a 7.78-153.06 when Carbone broke in the "Atlas Oil Tool Special." But in round two, another sub-par 7.66-181.08 lost to Bob Downey's 7.25-202. At the AHRA Springnationals at Bristol, John ran two qualifying passes, a 6.94 and a 6.87-226.60 (Low ET and Top Speed) to qualify first. These were AHRA's first six second runs. In the first round, he ran another six, a 6.92, but he lost to Chris Karamesines' 7.04. The following week (June 17) the duo was at Englishtown for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.91-227.27 qualified #4 in the sixteen car show. In the first round, he beat Tom Hoover with a 7.24. In the second round, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.65-232.55 over Ron Rivero's 6.99-216. He got revenge on Karamesines in the semifinal with a 7.00-216.34 beating Chris' 7.07-216. Tom McEwen helped John install some new tires for the final. Unfortunately, they installed the tires backwards and John lost to Don Garlits. Mulligan picked up another win on June 23 at Aquasco for the President's Gold Cup Championships. He beat Al Friedman in the first round with a 6.97-210.76 then got a "bye" run in the semifinal. In the final, he took the victory with Low ET and Top speed at 6.89-216.86 over Norm Weekly.

Notes: A best time of 7.58-209 cited in 1965 Herbert Cams ad. Originally listed 7.205-218.44, but that was way too fast for 1965. Don't think the team ran the ET in 1966, either, although they did run Top Speed of the Meet at Indy 66 at 218.46, which was probably the origin of the 218.44 formerly listed in 1965. | Nick won an eight car show at Fontana on Jan 17. He set top speed at 196.50 and in the final he beat Jeep Hampshire. He was back at Fontana on Feb 14 for a sixteen car show. Nick qualified #4 with a 7.80 and a 8.24-190.26 got him past the first round. In round two, a 7.83-191.08 beat Bobby Vodnick's 8.09-191 and he advanced in the semifinals when Maynard Rupp failed to fire. He had a bit more luck in the final when opponent Mike Sorokin broke a blower on the line in the "Surfers" car and Marshall soloed to the victory with a 9.10-118.73.

Notes: Likely Haase's greatest accomplishment this year was in June, taking Top Fuel Eliminator at the 2nd Annual Hot Rod Magazine Championship at Riverside. Though qualifying in the middle of a 32-car field, Haase outlasted the likes of Yeakel Plymouth (McEwen), The Surfers (Sororkin), the Hawaiian (Prudhomme), the Bounty Hunter and Gotelli-Milani. The final found him paired against the highly favored James Warren in the Warren-Crow car. Both cars encountered problems on the trophy run but it was Haase who crossed the finish first. -- RT | Ran a 7.75 at Indy U.S. Nationals 9-65.

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Shelly started on the NHRA tour late in July at the Mile-High Nationals in Denver. She qualified #8 with a 5.12-252.52 but in round one her 5.18-264.93 lost to Tommy Johnson Jr's 5.15-271. At the next NHRA event, the California Nationals at Sonoma, Shelly ran her first ever four second time, a 4.93 at 297.32 that qualified her #5 in the field. She lost to Doug Herbert in the first round when he got off the line first and his 5.06-286 held off her quicker 5.02-291.16.

Notes: Set National Record at 4.981 (low qualifier) on 9-03-89 at U.S. Nationals (7th entry in the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel) before lowering it to 4.951 at 89 Keystones. Photo from Columbus 1989. Eventually went quicker at Ennis, but lost the record. Times from Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 1 Winter 89/90 has 286.53. This was to be Darrell's last full season driving a TF dragster due to the accident that happened in England in April of '90. He did well, finishing in the fourth in points in NHRA TF competition. He started the year by qualifying #5 with a 5.08-281.16 at the Winternationals and improving to a first round 5.07-279.41 over Eddie Hill. He lost to Frank Bradley in the second round. At Houston for the Supernationals, he qualified #2 with a 5.00-281.25 but in the first round he smoked the tires and lost to Frank Cook. Darrell got it all together for the Gatornationals where he ran a 5.13-281.60 to qualify #5. He beat Mike Brotherton, Dennis Forcelle and had a solo in the semifinal when Hank Endres was unable to show. In the final, he was paired against Hill who had lane choice, but Gwynn prevailed with a 5.08-280.72 to Eddie's 5.11-276 for his first win of the year. At the fourth race of the season, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Gwynn qualified #2 with a 5.10-274.55. He set Low ET as well as a track record in the first round when he beat Chris Karamesines with a 5.09-272.06. Unfortunately, he took a nap on the starting line in round two and despite a 5.14-268.65 he lost to Hill's 5.17-270. At the next event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, he qualified #3 with a 5.05-276.49. Once again he set Low ET and a track record when he beat Forcelle in the first round with a 5.00. A second round 5.05-277 beat Endres but in the semifinals, both he and Gary Ormsby ran 5.04's but Gary got the win. It was on to the Cajun Nationals where Gwynn continued to qualify in the top half of the field. He ran a 5.24 for the #8 spot and in the first round he beat Earl Whiting. In the second round a 5.23-271 beat Forcelle's quicker 5.22 but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Frank Hawley. The next race on the schedule was the Springnationals. Darrell qualified #5 with a 5.08-274.47 but he lost to Forcelle in the first round. The tour shifted to Canada for the Grandnationals where a 5.28-271.00 qualified #8. He beat Paul Smith's 5.34-264 in the first round with a 5.27-267.77 but in the second round he fell off to a 5.34-243.04 that lost to Lori Johns' 5.22-272. At Englishtown for the Summernationals, Gwynn qualified #11. It was his worst qualifying position of the season. He did beat third qualifier Endres in the first round and in round two Gene Snow smoked the tires against him and his 5.32-271 took the win. But in the semifinals, Ormsby beat him with a 5.18-281. The tenth race of the season was at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Gwynn qualified #8 with a 5.34-263.31 in the thin air. He beat Bradley in the first round but lost in round two to Dick LaHaie. The California Nationals was the next stop and a 5.13-280.63 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot setting up a first round race with low qualifier Bradley. In the race, Bradley beat him by a tenth with Frank's 5.06-285 defeating Darrell's 5.16-281.42. At the next event, the Seafair Nationals, Gwynn tied his worst qualifying position with a 5.17-276.07 getting the #11 spot. In the first round, Ormsby beat him with a 5.04-283 to his 5.19-259.59. By this time, Darrell and crew chief Ken Veney were both getting hungry for a win; it was now the middle of Aug and they hadn't won since March. So they pulled into the Northstar Nationals a little more anxious to win than normal. A 5.18-270.35 qualified #3 and Darrell stepped up to a 5.12-275.98 in the first round over Jim Head, but in round two he overpowered the track to a tire-smoking 6.45-147.37 that lost to Joe Amato's 5.20-275. Regardless of the rest of the year, the next race made the season. That race was the U.S. Nationals at Indy. Darrell set a track record of 4.98 in qualifying. It was his first pole of the year and it came with a speed of 282.48. He beat Robert Reehl in the first round and in round two he got some measurement of revenge by beating Ormsby's 5.07-285 with a 5.04-280.72. In the semifinal, a consistent 5.04-281.51 beat Hill's 5.09-276. In the final for the gold, he met LaHaie and ran another 5.04-280.46 for his second win of '89. He didn't have to wait long for his third. At the next race, the Keystone Nationals, he qualified #2 with a 4.98-284.99. A first round 5.00-281.86 beat Cook, and in round two, a 4.96-282.75 beat Head. He set Low ET and a track record 4.95-281.16 in beating LaHaie's 5.00-281 in the semifinal. In the final, he ran Amato and another 4.95-281.77 was enough to cover Joe's 5.01-285 for his third win of the year. The next event was the Chief Nationals at the Texas Motorplex. Darrell qualified #4 with a 4.96-286.25. In round one, he ran a 4.98-284.45 to beat Head and in round two, a 4.99-285.62 beat Cook. He made an easy run (?) of 5.03-282.66 in the semifinals when Brotherton broke to advance to the finals. In the final, he ran a strong 4.94-279.85 that lost to Ormsby's 4.97-291. He made the finals of the next race as well, the Fallnationals. Gwynn qualified #2 with a 5.07-278.37 but in round two he beat Ormsby's 5.16 with Firebird Raceway's first four, a 4.99-278. In the semifinals, he beat LaHaie with a 5.08-278. In the final, he ran Shirley Muldowney and she got a slight holeshot and hung on for a popular win with her 5.05-275.48 beating Darrell's slightly quicker 5.04-278. At the season-ending World Finals, Darrell set Low ET in qualifying first with a 4.95-285.98. He beat Brotherton in the first round with a 5.01-282.75 but fouled away a 5.00-283.10 in the second round against Ormsby, bringing his season to a close.
