First over 210: Tommy Allen, 212.76 mph national record at Carlsbad, California, 4/02/66, then 213.76 at Irwindale on 9/24/66. | Tommy started the year at Bakersfield on Jan 2 for an NHRA Jackpot Circuit Race. He beat John Edmunds in the first round with an 8.01-205.46. He didn't win, but he ran well. On Jan 9 at Carlsbad for another Jackpot Pro-Circuit race, he qualified first with a 7.57-209.30 and beat Mike Sorokin in the first round with a 7.55. In the semi-final he beat Bill Leavitt; his 7.52-209.78 held for low et of the meet. In the final, he lost to John Mulligan's 7.59-205.00 with a 7.90-208.80. At the Santa Maria Fuel Fest on Jan 16, he qualified second with a 7.87-202.70. In the first round, a 7.76-177.86 beat James Warren's 8.01-190.00 in Jim Seaton's Chrysler. In the second round, he got a bye run and in the semifinal, a 7.91-199.54 beat Ron Hampshire (8.34) in Ted Gotelli's car. In the final, he faced the low et (7.74) car of Bill Demarest and beat him with a 7.77-199.54. At another Jackpot Pro Circuit race at Pomona on Jan 23, he runner-upped to Bill Leavitt with Bill's 7.76-193.54 beating Tom's 7.79-194. At the NHRA Winternats in Feb, he qualified 24th with a 7.80 but failed to make it to the late rounds. Tom won again on March 13 at Carlsbad for a Jackpot Pro-Circuit race. He ran a final round 7.87-205.94 to win. He was runner-up to Danny Ongais on March 26 for the Riverside Jackpot Circuit race. A final round 7.79-201.44 lost to Ongais' 7.71-205. Another win came on March 27 when 17 cars showed for an eight-car field at Pomona. Tommy faced Tom McEwen in the final and ran a 7.66-207.36 to win when McEwen fouled. The roles were reversed on April 3 at Carlsbad for a Division seven race when McEwen set low et (7.53) in winning over Allen in the final. Irwindale held a sixteen car T/F show on April 9, and Allen ran well enough to meet Dave Beebe in the final. Unfortunately, the two cars were lined up for the final when a circuit breaker blew out. Due to the late hour, the final was never run and the two split the purse. On April 17 he was back at Riverside for another Jackpot circuit race. In the first round Dave McKenzie failed to fire so Tommy ran a solo but in the semi-final, he lost to John Mulligan's 7.80. Irwindale held another sixteen car event on April 23 and a 7.90 qualified Tommy #10. In the first round, he fouled against Nick Marshall. He lost to Mulligan's 7.30-219.50 blast in the first round at the Pomona Pro Circuit race on April 24. At Beeline's Third Annual Fuel and Gas Championships on April 30, Allen set top speed at 208.32 and won the meet with a final 7.95-127.97 when McEwen fouled. At Irwindale on May 7, he qualified second at 7.84 and ran a first round 7.94-181.08 over John Mitchell. But a strong run of 7.65-200.88 by Mike Snively in the Hawaiian beat Tom's 7.98-200.44 in the second frame. On May 8, another Jackpot Pro-Circuit race was held in Carlsbad. Tommy set a 7.52 track record in the first round at 206.88 and went on to the final to meet Beebe. There Allen fouled away a 7.57-208.32 letting Beebe's 7.61-192.70 collect the win. Another win came at Irwindale on May 14 when he beat Jim Dunn in the final. Allen had qualified low with a 7.57 that held for low et. 15 cars showed for the eight car field at Irwindale the following week (May 21). Allen qualified and ran 7.78 in the first to rounds to meet Ongais in the final. Danny fouled and Tommy took another victory with a 7.92-201.34. Irwindale treated him well as on June 4 he again qualified low with a 7.74 and went on to win over a fouling Steve Porter in the final. He was at Carlsbad to June 10 for an eight car show but lost in the semi-finals. The next day (June 11) found him back at Irwindale. He ran an 8.66-131.77 over a fouling Ron Goodsell in the first round and a semi-final 7.87-194.38 beat Dwight Salisbury. In the final, his off-pace 8.09-128 lost to Mike Sorokin's 7.63-206. He didn't win at Carlsbad on June 17 and on the 18 he was back at Irwindale where a 7.80 qualified #5. He faced low qualifier Sorokin in the first round and beat him with a 7.66-177.86 beating Mike's 7.87. A holeshot by Ongais in the semi-final made his 7.58-199.10 a loser to Danny's 7.59-205. On June 19, Riverside held the HRM Championships. Allen qualified #22 with a 7.70-206.43. He stopped James Warren in the first round but in the second round, John Edmunds' 7.49-205 beat his 7.54-206.42. He lost in the first round at an eight car show at Irwindale on June 25. Allen had qualified #6 with a 7.70 but in the first round he shut off to a 9.11-84.90 and lost to Ongais' 7.79-201. He suffered another rare first round loss at Irwindale on July 9 when Mulligan ran a low ET 7.44-205 to stop his 7.73-204.54. On July 10 at Santa Maria, John Edmunds' 7.63-209.30 stopped his 7.82 in the first round. At Lions for the AHRA Championships, he ran well but failed to make the finals. He did make the final at Carlsbad on July 29 for an eight car show but Mulligan's 7.91-203 beat his 8.27-131.38. On August 12 he qualified first with a 7.74 at Irwindale. He ran low ET in the first round with a 7.72-208.32 beating John Harbert but in doing so he lost his motor in the lights and was done for the day. He had top speed (216) at Carlsbad on Aug 15 for an eight-car show and beat Bill Leavitt and Leroy Goldstein to advance into the finals with low et (7.44) car, Jeep Hampshire. Allen took the win. He won again the following week at Carlsbad (Aug 26). Once again he met Jeep Hampshire in the final. This time, Allen set low ET with a final round blast of 7.47-205.46 to cover Jeep's 7.82-201. He continued his winning ways at Carlsbad on Sept 5 by winning the Jackpot Circuit race held there. He set low ET and top speed at 7.51-216.34 before dropping Leroy Goldstein's 7.71-210 in the final with a 7.76-208.30. Goldstein reversed the roles on Sept 15 when he met Allen in the final at Carlsbad for an eight car show. In the final Tommy fouled giving Leroy the win. Not sure what car he was driving or if it was even the Allen and Huff car in these notes above. On Sept 23 for sure in the Allen-Huff car, he attended the final Division seven race at Irwindale. He lost to John Edmunds (7.61-200.88) in round one after setting top speed in qualifying at 213.76. On Oct 7 at Carlsbad, a second round track record (7.36) by Leroy Goldstein (Crower & Blair) beat Allen. At Irwindale on Oct 15, he again lost in the first round this time to Dominic Cardoza's 7.74-202.24. The next day (Oct 16), back at Carlsbad, he won his first round race but lost a motor doing it, putting him out of the race. He raced at the Irwindale Grand Prix on Oct 22, getting past a fouling Dwight Salisbury in the first round, but he failed to make the finals. Finally! The next day, Oct 23 at Carlsbad, Allen's low et and top speed of the meet 7.27-208.80 won, beating Jack Ewell's 7.53. A first round 7.28-201.78 showed his final time was no fluke. He made an easy run in the semis when Kelly Brown fouled in the Outcast. Tommy qualified first with a 7.38 at Irwindale on Nov 19, but in the first round, he shut off on the line with no oil pressure. On Dec 26 at Irwindale for the UDRA Fuel Championships, Tommy qualified eighth with a 7.44-214.30. He won his first round but lost to Mike Sorokin's 7.50 in round two with a 7.52-195.22. - Ron Howard

Notes: At the HRM Championships at Riverside, Rick used a 7.62-209.30 to qualify #12 in the 32 car field. He lasted until round two when Tom McEwen stopped him with a 7.43-195 to his 7.69-207.84. On June 25, Rick was at Irwindale for an eight car show. He qualified #4 with a 7.65. In the first round, Stewart's 7.69-210.76 beat Ron Goodsell's 7.78-200 in the "Imperial." Rick had a little nap on the line in the semi-finals with his 7.73-205.00 losing to Danny Ongais' 7.81-200.

Notes: Won Top Eliminator at Indy with 7.321, 215.83. Won Winternationals at Pomona that year too (times to come), and turned 7.68, 206.42 at Lions on Feb. 1 and 7.51, 200.00 at 66 March Meet. Ran 7.65 at Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals. | Poor Mike had big shoes to fill. He replaced Don Prudhomme at the wheel of Roland Leong's "Hawaiian." How do you follow a driver like Prudhomme in the driver's seat? Well, he did it by winning the Winternationals at Pomona. Mike had qualified #3 with a 7.66 in the 32 car field. He beat Roy Thode in the first round with a 7.57-208.80. In the second round, a 7.55-208.80 beat Paul Sutherland. He almost lost in round three when Pete Robinson had him beat but Pete lost a blower belt and Snively squeezed past for the win. In the semi-finals, a 7.59 beat James Warren's slightly quicker 7.58. For all the marbles, he ran a 7.54-209.78 to win over Jim Dunn's 7.59-207. The team went to Lions the following week (Feb 26) for the UDRA Winternationals. A 7.68-206.42 qualified #11 in the 32 car show but they failed to reach the finals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, the "Hawaiian" lasted until round three when Mike got out of shape against Warren and crossed the centerline. On March 20, Mike ran an eight car show at Irwindale. He qualified #2 with a 7.62 and ran an 8.32-95.44 to advance past the first round but in the semi-finals, a 7.73 lost to Rick Stewart's 7.64. On April 2, he won a 16 car show at Irwindale. Mike beat the "Dark Horse" in the first round with a 7.61-192.70. In the second round, a 7.76-166.66 advanced when John Martin fouled in the Muse-Crafton car. In the semi-final, he beat Dave Babler and for the money, a 7.53 beat Danny Ongais. The team was back at Irwindale on April 9 for another 16 car show. Snively lasted until the semi-finals before losing to Dave Beebe. The "Hawaiian" team frequented Irwindale showing up on April 23 for yet another 16 car show. Mike qualified first with a 7.58. In the first round, he beat Babler's 7.68-209 with a track record 7.45 at 210.76. In the second round, a 7.55-190.66 beat Ray Ayers' 8.02-193. Mike was a little sleepy in the semi-final and his 7.58-206.88 lost to Stewart's 7.71-213. He set low ET the following week (April 30) at Irwindale. He ran a 7.65-198.66 in the first round while beating Dunn's 7.84-199. In round two a 7.97-181.08 beat Ayres' 7.95-193. Another 7.97-181.08 lost to Zane Schubert's 7.77-207 in the semi-final. Mike won the next Irwindale TF show on May 7th. He qualified #3 with a 7.87 and picked up to a 7.64-187.50 in the first round over the injected car of John Evens. He got around Tommy Allen's 7.98-200 in round two with a 7.65-200.88. In the semi-final, he soloed with a 7.99-180. In the final, he beat Dunn with a 7.56-201.78. The next day they were at Carlsbad for a Jackpot Circuit race. In the first round, Snively's 7.57-202.24 beat Dunn's 7.64-205. In the semi-final, a 7.65-202.70 lost to eventual winner Beebe's 7.58-206.

Notes: In 1969, B&M won the Winternationals in their 392-powered Woody car which had debuted at the 1968 World Finals. By mid-summer of '69 the team had changed to a Ramchargers-sourced elephant motor. Qualified #1 (6.43) at Indy '69 with an all-time quickest ET on low qualifying pass. The stunning time stood as the sport's best for a year. John ran three of the 15 fastest speeds in 1969. Originally listed a 241, but that time was not supported by Beebe-Mulligan.com, which cited a best 1969 speed of the 233.22 from Riverside. John died at Indy 1969 when he had a terrible fire during a first round win. See racer website for details. -- BM | Beebe-Mulligan reset the track record at Union Grove two days running in early June '69, with a 6.70 following the previous day's 6.71. -- RT Mulligan started his '69 season at the AHRA Winternationals where a 6.99 qualified second. He failed to make it into the later rounds but as mentioned above, Pomona was a different story. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified with a 7.16-225.00. A first round 7.12-221.13 beat Tom Larkin's 7.24-206. In round two, a 6.86-222.77 beat James Warren's 7.14-214. Bennie Osborn's 7.42 fell to John's 6.86-221.13 in the third round and a 6.93-217.91 beat Leroy Goldstein in the semi-final. For the win, a 6.95-211.38 beat Don Prudhomme's 8.52-126. It was quite a win, considering 82 cars fought for the 32 spots available. At the second OCIR All-Pro race at OCIR on Feb 9, a 6.94 qualified #3, but in the first round, he lost a blower belt slowing the car to a 7.11-208.80 that lost to Dave Beebe's 7.01-211. At the Stardust Open on Feb 16 at Las Vegas, a 7.12 qualified #2. Mulligan singled in the first round when Tommy Allen's car wouldn't stay lit. In the second round, he set a 6.85 track record while beating Hank Westmoreland. Ron Rivero lost to John's 6.90-221.57 in the semi-final that set-up a rematch of the Pomona finalists. This time, Prudhomme came out on top with a 6.94-216 beating John's 7.10-211.76 runner-up effort. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.88-225 beat Butch Maas' 6.95-222 in the first round but in the second round he lost a blower and the race to Steve Carbone. On March 16 at Riverside for the HRM Championships, John qualified #8 with a 7.01. In the first round, he beat Maas again with a 7.10-233.22 (top speed) . A 7.14-216.86 beat Jerry Ruth's quicker 7.02-219 in round two but he hurt some parts and was unable to return for the third round bringing Ruth back into the show on the break rule. Mulligan set top speed again at the final OCIR All-Pro race on March 29, when a first round 7.06-222.76 beat Gerry Glenn. Against Prudhomme in the semis, he had a violent engine explosion and lost. He was not hurt. On May 30 he won over a sixteen car field at US 131 Martin, Michigan. The times he turned here were strong. He opened up with a 6.62-232.55 (top speed) over Duke Ray in the "Guzler." In round two he set low ET with a 6.60-230.76 over Tommy Ivo. In the semi-final, Prudhomme shut off on the line and John still rocketed to a 6.67-231.36 on his single. In the final, he met and beat Don Cook with a 6.65-230.17. All four of his runs were in the 6.60's and all over 230 mph. His 6.60 and 232.55 were both track records. Nobody else there ran better than a 6.87, and nobody else even ran 217. It was quite a performance by the team. Shortly after this John was the recipient of the Mike Sorokin Memorial Award. This award is voted by his peers.
