Notes: Won Top Eliminator at Indy with 7.321-215.83. Won Winternationals at Pomona that year too (times to come), and turned 7.68, 206.42 at Lions on Feb. 1 and 7.51-200.00 at 1966 March Meet. Ran 7.65 at Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals. | Mike had big shoes to fill. He replaced Don Prudhomme at the wheel of Roland Leong's "Hawaiian." How do you follow a driver like Prudhomme in the driver's seat? Well, he did it by winning the Winternationals at Pomona. Mike qualified #3 with a 7.66 in the 32 car field. He beat Roy Thode in the first round with a 7.57-208.80. In the second round, a 7.55-208.80 beat Paul Sutherland. He almost lost in round three when Pete Robinson had him beat but Pete lost a blower belt and Snively squeezed past for the win. In the semifinals, a 7.59 beat James Warren's slightly quicker 7.58. For all the marbles, he ran a 7.54-209.78 to win over Jim Dunn's 7.59-207. The team went to Lions the following week (Feb. 26) for the UDRA Winternationals. A 7.68-206.42 qualified #11 in the 32 car show but they failed to reach the finals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, the "Hawaiian" lasted until round three when Mike got out of shape against Warren and crossed the centerline. On March 20, Mike ran an eight car show at Irwindale. He qualified #2 with a 7.62 and ran an 8.32-95.44 to advance past the first round but in the semifinals, a 7.73 lost to Rick Stewart's 7.64. On April 2, he won a 16 car show at Irwindale. Mike beat the "Dark Horse" in the first round with a 7.61-192.70. In the second round, a 7.76-166.66 advanced when John Martin fouled in the Muse-Crafton car. In the semifinal, he beat Dave Babler and for the money, a 7.53 beat Danny Ongais. The team was back at Irwindale on April 9 for another 16 car show. Snively lasted until the semifinals before losing to Dave Beebe. The "Hawaiian" team frequented Irwindale showing up on April 23 for yet another 16 car show. Mike qualified first with a 7.58. In the first round, he beat Babler's 7.68-209 with a track record 7.45 at 210.76. In the second round, a 7.55-190.66 beat Ray Ayres' 8.02-193. Mike was a little sleepy in the semifinal and his 7.58-206.88 lost to Stewart's 7.71-213. He set Low ET the following week (April 30) at Irwindale. He ran a 7.65, 198.66 in the first round while beating Dunn's 7.84, 199. In round two a 7.97-181.08 beat Ayres' 7.95-193. Another 7.97-181.08 lost to Zane Schubert's 7.77-207 in the semifinal. Mike won the next Irwindale TF show on May 7th. He qualified #3 with a 7.87 and picked up to a 7.64-187.50 in the first round over the injected car of John Evans. He got around Tommy Allen's 7.98-200 in round two with a 7.65-200.88. In the semifinal, he soloed with a 7.99-180. In the final, he beat Dunn with a 7.56-201.78. The next day they were at Carlsbad for a Jackpot Circuit race. In the first round, Snively's 7.57-202.24 beat Dunn's 7.64-205. In the semifinal, a 7.65-202.70 lost to eventual winner Beebe's 7.58-206.

Notes: Leroy qualified #3 with a 7.72 on March 26 for a sixteen car show at Lions. In the first round, he nipped James Warren's 7.87-205 with a 7.86-206.88. He then lost in round two. He was back at Lions on April 18 but failed to qualify for the eight car show. After qualifying had ended with a 7.87 bump, Leroy ran a 7.72, 196.06 that would have put him in the middle of the field. On May 7, he was back at Lions for another eight car show. This time, he just made the show with a 7.89, 196.97, good for #8. He set Low ET in the first round with a 7.50-201.78 that lost to James Warren's 7.63-202. The next day found the Crower-Blair team at Carlsbad for the Jackpot circuit race. Leroy fouled against Bill Leavitt in the first round. On May 21, Lions held one of its weekly eight car shows. Leroy qualified second with a 7.59 and a second 7.59-207.84 lost to Jeff Bliley's 7.82, 196. He was at Carlsbad on June 17 but failed to win and the next day (June 18) found the team at Irwindale where a first round 7.95-200.00 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.60-193. At the HRM Championships at Riverside on June 19, a 7.70-203.16 qualified #21 in the 32 car field. He showed his driving talent in the first round when his 7.77-200.88 beat Dave Beebe's much quicker 7.52-213. On July 2, he was at Irwindale for an eight car show where he qualified with a 7.68. Unfortunately, in the first round he shut off with no oil pressure. The next day (July 3), he went to San Fernando for another eight car show. He qualified #3 with a 7.95, 197.80 and in round one, a 7.91-169 beat John Martin. In the semifinals, his 7.92 lost to James Warren's 7.68. Irwindale held an eight car show on August 20, and Leroy qualified #2 with a 7.73. He won his first round race with a 7.74-207.84. In the semifinal, a 7.80, 196.92 beat Steve Porter's ailing 8.35. He lost to Dwight Salisbury in the final. On August 26 he was a Carlsbad for an eight car show. He advanced past the first round with a 7.80-203.16 but in the semifinal, Tommy Allen's 7.53-190 beat his 7.78-202.24. He was runner-up to Allen at a Jackpot Pro Circuit race at Carlsbad on Sept 5. His quicker 7.71-210.76 lost to Tommy Allen's 7.76-208 in the final. On Sept 16 he won an eight car show at Carlsbad. He beat Jack Jones in the first round and in the semifinals, Ongais fouled against him. In the final, he got another free gift when Allen also fouled. Goldstein ran 7.42-204 for the win. Leroy got himself another big win on Sept 25 when he won the Fremont Fall Championships. He set Low ET in the first round with a 7.17 over Gene Winther and in the final, he ran a 7.65-215.82 (Top Speed) for the victory. On Oct 8 at Irwindale, Leroy qualified second with a 7.50. He made it to the final against Larry Faust but broke on the line giving Larry a solo (7.78-168.53) for the win. A week later (Oct 15), he returned to Irwindale for another eight car show. He didn't do as well when he lost to Beebe in the first round. He went to Carlsbad the next day and won. A track record 7.27 at 214.78 in the first round beat Dominic Cardoza while in the semifinals he ran an easy single. In the final he faced Cardoza again who had gotten back in on the "break rule." Once again Leroy won, running 7.37-214.28 for the victory. At the Irwindale Grand Prix race, Goldstein advanced past the first round with a 7.49-187.10 when Herb Ries lost fire. In the second round his 7.77-149.50 lost to Tommy Dyer's 7.72-202.

Notes: Mullins ran strong in '85. He started the year by qualifying #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.57-263.00. A first round 5.91-214.79 got around Frank Bradley but in round two he lost a motor and the race to Larry Minor. At the Gatornationals, he continued to run strong. A 5.66-255.10 qualified #7. He beat Hank Endres in the first round with a 5.68-256.41. In round two he upset Don Garlits with a 5.67 over Garlits' 5.68. Unfortunately, facing Joe Amato in the semifinals, he fouled. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. It was an eight car show and Bill qualified #4 with a 5.64-249.03. He lost to Gene Snow in the first round. The Cajun Nationals featured another eight car show. Qualifying was tough as Mullins blew an engine trying to make the show. Another engine was put in and he qualified. He beat Gary Beck in the first round with a 5.74-249 and in the semifinals, a 5.67-254 beat Darrell Gwynn. In the final, he faced Garlits and Don claimed his 25th NHRA win to beat Mullins. It was still a very good showing for the team. He finished one spot higher at the next NHRA event, the Springnationals at Columbus. He qualified #4 with a 5.61-252.95 and beat Dan Pastorini in the first round. He got revenge on Garlits in round two when he beat him with a 5.69-252 over Don's off pace 5.95. Bill out drove LaHaie in the semifinals with Bill's 5.71-258.02 (Top Speed) beating Dick's quicker 5.66-251. In the final he faced Beck. Mullins ran a 5.62-257.58 to take the win over Gary's 5.71-245. The NHRA tour headed to Canada for the Grandnationals at Sanair International at the end of June. Once again it was an eight car show. Mullins qualified #3 with a 5.58-257.87. He ran Garlits in the first round and fouled against him. Mullins really stepped it up at the Summernationals at Englishtown. He ran a 5.47-257.14 to qualify #3.

At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.81-228.42 qualified #4 in the 32 car field. He beat Jeb Allen in round one before losing to Dennis Baca in round two. Steve qualified first at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.40-238.09 but in the first round he shut off on the line advancing eventual winner Dwight Salisbury into round two. At the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont, Carbone qualified #3 in the sixteen car field but lost to John Wiebe in the first round. The following week (March 18), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Also, 4.96 from Bakersfield testing and 289.57 from Gainesville 3-91. Sixteenth and final member of the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel on Feb. 24, 1991, with a 4.996 (288.18) at NHRA Phoenix. | Kenny started the '91 season by qualifying #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.01-289.76(top speed of the meet).Unfortunately, he lost to Frank Hawley in the first round. He didn't qualify all that well at the NHRA Arizona Nationals where his 5.10-284.72 got him the #11 spot in the field. He did well though, making the best of it. In the semifinals he ran 4.99-288.18 (top speed) to beat Joe Amato's quicker 4.96-281. In the final, opponent Craig Smith broke and Kenny ran 5.01-287.63 for the victory. He doubled it up by winning NHRA's next race as well, the Supernationals at Houston. There he qualified #2 with a 4.94-290.97. Another 4.94 at 285.71 beat Tom McEwen's 4.99-278 in round two while a 4.97-289.11 beat Jim Head's 5.01-260 in the semifinals. He won his second race in a row with a final round 4.95-291.54(top speed and a new track record)over Gene Snow's ailing car. Bernstein then went over to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and won that too. It was an eight car show and Kenny took the pole with a 5.22-271.65(top speed).A first round 5.25-269.02 beat Doug Herbert while in the semifinals, he beat Pat Dakin with a 5.22-269. He met Tommy Johnson Jr in the final and his low ET of the meet 5.20 at 270.53 beat Johnson's 5.50. His winning streak came to an end at the NHRA Gatornationals. He set a new track speed record in qualifying with a 4.94-289.57. The ET gave him the #3 spot in the field. He looked like he was on his way to another victory when he beat Cruz Pedregon in the first round with a 4.99-286.07. A round two 5.06-284.53 beat Frank Bradley but in the semifinals Amato's 5.01-275 beat his 5.06-282.92. At the non-points NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham, Bernstein qualified #4 in the eight car show with a 5.06-279.85. He fouled against Lori Johns in the first round. It was the first time this year that Kenny had not set top speed of the meet.NHRA's next stop was at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 4.96-287.72 qualified the "Budweiser King" in the #3 spot. A 4.97 in round one beat Dick LaHaie while a 5.05-277 beat Dakin's 5.09 in round two. In the semifinals, he ran Don Prudhomme and Kenny's 5.03-285 beat the "Snake's" 5.14. Bernstein scored another win when final round opponent Snow lost an engine. Kenny's 5.04-282.75 won his third NHRA race in five events.

Notes: Bucksdown 4 car. Also 7.59 at Carlsbad 4/25/65 (National Record) and 7.75 at AHRA Beeline 1965. | Danny started the season at Riverside for the KFWB Festival on Jan 1. It was an eight car field and he qualified #8 with a 8.00, 196.50. In the first round he fouled away a 7.99-193.54 against eventual winner Jack Williams. He did much better the next day (Jan 2) at Fontana for the UDRA race. It was a two day race run on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, he qualified #2 in the sixteen car field with a 7.78. Another 7.78 at 194.80 beat Bill Leavitt's 7.89-187 in the first round. He picked up to a 7.72, 198.66 (low ET and top speed) in round two to beat Rick Stewart. In the semifinals, he eased it through with a 8.16-148.51 when Merek Chertkow fouled in John Smyser's car. In the final, he faced Tom McEwen. Ongais got the victory with a 7.80-192.30 over McEwen's runner-up 8.02, 198. The following day, they did it again. Ongais ran 7.71-194.38, 7.75-193.54, and 7.72, 196.50 over Doug Robinson, Jeep Hampshire, and Mike Sorokin to meet McEwen in the final for the second time in two days. Once again the results were the same with Danny getting the win, only this time the "Mongoose" fouled.

Notes: Photo was taken at Bakersfield, CA, in March 1966. Drag Sport Illustrated "1965 Wrap Up" cited consistent 1965 times of 7.60-205. | Ran 7.766-200.88 at Lions Drag Strip AHRA Nationals 65. | Mike was at Lions for an eight car show on Jan 16. His best of 7.93, 196.50 failed to qualify but he got into the show when the "Ward and Warye" dragster broke. In the first round, opponent Bobby Tapia lost fire and Sorokin advanced with an 8.15-190.26. Unfortunately, in the semifinals, he fouled against eventual winer Larry Faust. The next day (Jan 17), he was at Fontana where he qualified first with a 7.89-193.54, but on that run, the motor blew in the lights and the team was unable to run eliminations. It was interesting to know that that was the 389th run on that engine. On Feb 14, they were back at Fontana for a sixteen car show. Mike ran 7.88 to qualify and then improved to a 7.71, 198.22 in the first round to beat Dave Crower's 8.12-192 in the "Crower and Blair" car. In round two, a 7.78 beat Dave Babler's 8.07 and in the semifinals, a career best (to this point) 7.69 beat James Warren's ailing Chevy at 8.27-149. In the final he met Nick Marshall but Sorokin had his blower go south on the line and Nick soloed for the win. National Dragster (Dec 24, 1965) had an article on this car with the team claiming a best of 7.55-208 up until that time. - Ron Howard

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1996 U.S. Nats, Indy. At the biggest race of the year, Sarver failed to qualify for the first time all season. He made his best run, 4.92, 295 on Friday evening, but spinning tires and freak breakage kept him from making full runs on his other passes.
