Notes: Set National Record at 4.981 (low qualifier) on 9/3/89 at US Nationals (7th entry in the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel) before lowering it to 4.951 at 89 Keystones. Photo from Columbus 1989. Eventually went quicker at Ennis, but lost the record. Listed times from Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 1. Winter 89/90 has 286.53. This was to be Darrell's last full season driving a Top Fuel dragster due to the accident that happened in England in April of '90. He did well, finishing fourth in points in NHRA Top Fuel competition. New sponsor, Coors replaced Budweiser for the '89 season, and Gwynn would have been the first to tell you that things didn't go to well until Brainerd. There he lost in round two, but he ran well and the team left with smiles on their faces. They then won the next two races jumping up in the points. Darrell started the year by qualifying #5 with a 5.08/281.16 at the Winternationals and improving to a first-round 5.07/279.41 over Eddie Hill. Eddie would not have even been in the show after his blow over in qualifying, but the Gwynn team loaned Hill their shape chassis so that he could run. He lost to Frank Bradley in the second round. At Houston for the Supernationals, he qualified #2 with a 5.00/281.25, but in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Frank Cook. Darrell got it all together for the Gatornationals where he ran a 5.13/281.60 to qualify #5. He beat Mike Brotherton, Dennis Forcelle and Earl Whiting with a 5.22/265 in the semifinal. In the final, he was paired against Hill who had lane choice, but Gwynn prevailed with a 5.08/280.72 to Eddie's 5.11/276 for his first win of the year. After his big win, it was surprising that Darrell failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. At the fourth race of the season, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Gwynn qualified #2 with a 5.10/274.55. He set Low ET as well as a track record in the first round, when he beat Chris Karamesines with a 5.09/272.06. Unfortunately, he took a nap on the starting line in round two and despite a 5.14/268.65 he lost to Hill's 5.17/270. At the next event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, he qualified #3 with a 5.05/276.49. Once again he set Low ET and a track record when he beat Forcelle in the first round, with a 5.00. A second round 5.05/277 beat Endres, but in the semifinals, both he and Gary Ormsby ran 5.04's, but Gary got the win. It was on to the Cajun Nationals where Gwynn continued to qualify in the top half of the field. He ran a 5.24 for the #8 spot and in the first round, he beat Whiting. In the second round a 5.23/271 beat Forcelle's quicker 5.22, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Frank Hawley. The next race on the schedule was the Springnationals. Darrell qualified #5 with a 5.08/274.47, but he lost to Forcelle in the first round, when the "Coors" car smoked the tires. The tour shifted to Canada for the Grandnationals where a 5.28/271.00 qualified #8. He beat Paul Smith's 5.34/264 in the first round, with a 5.27/267.77, but in the second round, he fell off to a 5.34/243.04 that lost to Lori Johns' 5.22/272. At Englishtown for the Summernationals, Gwynn qualified #11. It was his worst qualifying position of the season. He did beat third qualifier Endres in the first round, and in round two Gene Snow smoked the tires against him and his 5.32/271 took the win. But in the semifinals, Ormsby beat him with a 5.18/281. The tenth race of the season was at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Gwynn qualified #8 with a 5.34/263.31 in the thin air. He beat Bradley in the first round, but lost in round two to Dick LaHaie. The California Nationals was the next stop and a 5.13/280.63 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot setting up a first-round race with low qualifier Bradley. In the race, Bradley beat him by a tenth with Frank's 5.06/285 defeating Darrell's 5.16/281.42. At the next event, the Seafair Nationals, Gwynn tied his worst qualifying position with a 5.17/276.07 getting the #11 spot. In the first round, Ormsby beat him with a 5.04/283 to his 5.19/259.59. By this time, Darrell and crew chief Ken Veney were both getting hungry for a win; it was now the middle of Aug, and they hadn't won since March. So they pulled into the Northstar Nationals a little more anxious to win than normal. A 5.18/270.35 qualified #3 and Darrell stepped up to a 5.12/275.98 in the first round, over Jim Head, but in round two he overpowered the track to a tire-smoking 6.45/147.37 that lost to Joe Amato's 5.20/275. Regardless of the rest of the year, the next race made the season. That race was the US Nationals at Indy. Darrell set a track record 4.98 in qualifying. It was his first pole of the year and it came with a speed of 282.48. He beat Robert Reehl in the first round, and in round two he got some measurement of revenge by beating Ormsby's 5.07/285 with a 5.04/280.72. In the semifinal, a consistent 5.04/281.51 beat Hill's 5.09/276. In the final for the gold, he met LaHaie and ran another 5.04/280.46 for his second win of '89. He didn't have to wait long for his third. At the next race, the Keystone Nationals, he qualified #2 with a 4.98/284.99. A first-round 5.00/281.86 beat Cook, and in round two, a 4.96/282.75 beat Head. He set Low ET and a track record 4.95/281.16 in beating LaHaie's 5.00/281 in the semifinal. In the final, he ran Amato and another 4.95/281.77 was enough to cover Joe's 5.01/285 for his third win of the year. The next event was the Chief Nationals at the Texas Motorplex. Darrell qualified #4 with a 4.96/286.25. In round one, he ran a 4.98/284.45 to beat Head and in round two, a 4.99/285.62 beat Cook. He made an easy run (?) of 5.03/282.66 in the semifinals when Brotherton broke to advance to the finals. In the final, he ran a strong 4.94/279.85 that lost to Ormsby's 4.97/291. He made the finals of the next race as well, the Fallnationals. Gwynn qualified #2 with a 5.07/278.37, but in round two he beat Ormsby's 5.16 with Firebird Raceway's first four, a 4.99/278. In the semifinals, he beat LaHaie with a 5.08/278. In the final, he ran Shirley Muldowney, and she got a slight holeshot and hung on for a popular win with her 5.05/275.48 beating Darrell's slightly quicker 5.04/278. At the season-ending World Finals, Darrell set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 4.95/285.98. He beat Brotherton in the first round, with a 5.01/282.75, but fouled away a 5.00/283.10 in the second round against Ormsby, bringing his season to a close.

Notes: Number 3 at Indy 1972 at 6.197/221.67, then ran quickest ever at the time 6.065/232.55 and 6.071/229.59 in eliminations, finishing runner up to Gary Beck. No records could be set at this race, however. Also, 6.13 at Seattle and 6.16 at Lions Last Drag Race 12/72. | What can be said of Jerry Ruth? Ruth won the Division Six title seven out of the last eight years. He dominated the NHRA Division Six fuel classes in '71. The self-proclaimed "King" won Funny Car at all five Division Six races and only failed to win one Top Fuel race to have had done likewise to TF! So to back it up for '72, he had Don Long build him a new 217" rear-engined car. Jerry built all his own engines, using a Pamco stroker crank, Air Research blower, Crower cam, as well as an unusual Crower eight-port injector. Ruth dominated the third race of NHRA's Division 6. The race was run at Mission B.C. on June 18. He only qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.70. That set up a first-round race with low qualifier Herm Petersen. In that race, Ruth stepped it up to a 6.25/232.55 to beat Herm's 6.35/229. In the semifinals, he beat Gary Beck with a 6.20 (Low ET) at 231.95. In the final, he took the victory by beating Hank Johnson's 6.69 with a 6.22/235.60 (Top Speed).

Notes: World Champ 72. Perhaps the last car to win a national event with an iron 392 Chrysler? High gear only and super lightweight. Also ran 6.430 at 216.34 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge. 6.25/227 times from National Dragster, 12/29/72, at Gainesville. Winner at NHRA World Finals with a 6.461 best. | Jim Walther and Harold "Slim" Carter teamed up in '72 and had Don Garlits weld them up a 215" wheelbase chassis. Al Bergler did the bodywork for the dragster. The 1,500 hp engine was built by Carter's firm, Lake Speed Equipment. The 392 Hemi block was overbored .030-inch and a Reath 3/8 stroker crank was used. M/T rods held 7.5:1 Forgedtrue pistons in place. Crane ported and polished the heads as well as supplied the roller cam. Donovan valves measuring 2/1/6" were used for both the intake and exhaust. An Edelbrock manifold supported a Cragar driving 6/71 blower that was prepared by Don Hampton. The car was direct drive using a Hays clutch. The Mopar rear with 4.10 gears got the power to the ground. Vic Porter did the yellow lettering while Ray Petre was responsible for the pink, purple and blue paint. Weight of the car was 1,375 lbs. Ran best times of 6.250/235.60 in a close round one loss at Ontario to Don Moody's 6.20.

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Also 292.39 from Gainesville 3/92. Set 4.893 National Record and low qualifier at 92 Winternationals. | The season didn't start so well for Pat. He was at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in Jan, and on his very first pass of the new year, the car went into a wheelstand and landed hard. It sheared the left A-Arm, and the team spent all day Saturday repairing it. On Sunday, Austin came back out and ran 5.15 and 5.03/279.67. Pat qualified #1 at the Winternats with a 4.89/291.54. He ran a 4.90/291.07 in the first round, over a broken Bruce Walker and a second-round 4.92/289.48 beat Bobby Baldwin before he lost to Jim Head in the semis. At the next event, the Arizona Nationals, he continued to qualify well with a 4.96/291.35 (Top Speed) qualifying #2. In the first round, he beat Kenny Bernstein with a 4.99/287.90 and a 5.08/286.07 took care of Head in the second round. In the semifinal, Pat left first running a 5.07/287.44 that beat Mike Brotherton's quicker 5.04/281. In the final, he met Doug Herbert and won with a 5.06/286.25. At the NHRA Supernationals, he qualified #10 with a 4.96/295.27.

Notes: Irwindale had a big $$$ bounty on their head for them being undefeated for several weeks straight. They ran some legitimate 7.20s at many different tracks. But alas, they never toured and didn't get the fame they deserved. - Bill Duke | Confirmed 7.46/210.76 at Lions UDRA Winter Championships 2/11/66 and 7.58 at 205.94 at Bakersfield 3/66. Home-built chassis, per 6/66 Drag Racing. | It's hard to say who was the winningest Top Fuel driver in '66, but it was hard to bet against Beebe. Dave qualified fifth with a 7.82/201.76 on January 23 at the Jackpot Pro-Circuit race at Pomona. He set Low ET with a 7.59 over John Mulligan in the second round, but he lost in the semis. At the AHRA Winternats, he set Top Speed at 213.76 but failed to make it into the finals. He qualified #21 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.79, but he lost in the first round, to Ronnie Hampshire. At Lions on February 26 for the UDRA Winternationals, he ran a 7.46/210.76 (Top Speed) to qualify second in the 32-car field and went all the way, winning over a fouling Bobby Tapia in the final. On March 26, he was at Lions for a sixteen-car show. Dave qualified #1 with a 7.63/198.66 and ran 7.69/202.70 over Ken Safford (7.97), 7.74/203.16 over Dave Babler, and 7.74/201.78 over Bob Hightower in the semifinal. In the final, he met Nick Marshall, who ran a track record 7.41/199 over Beebe's 7.68/191.08. Ironically, the old track record 7.46 was set by Dave on February 15. He set Top Speed again in qualifying #1 at 7.62/211.76 on April 2 at a 16-car field at Irwindale. A first-round 7.63/211.54 beat Joe Shubert (7.72/199.24). In the second round, his 7.70/210.08 beat an off pace 10.64 by John Mulligan, but Danny Ongais stepped up in the semis to a 7.66/208.32 over Beebe's 7.74/205.46. The next day (April 3) at Carlsbad for the Division 7 opener, Dave ran 7.71/209.78 over Steve Carbone (7.96/195.22), an 8.08/193.54 over Roy Shoults, but he fouled in the semis to eventual winner Tom McEwen. He was back at Irwindale on April 9 and beat Mike Snively in the semifinal with a 7.62 putting him in the final against Tommy Allen. Unfortunately, a breaker went out, and the track lost power, so Tommy and Dave split the purse due to the lateness. He won an eight-car show at Lions on April 23, qualifying #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 7.43/213.76. He ran 7.50/211.76 and 7.53/208.32 before winning with an 8.01/130.24 when John Mulligan fouled. The following day (April 24), he runner-upped to Tom McEwen at Pomona for the Jackpot Pro Circuit race. He got past a fouling Ron Hampshire in the first round, with a 7.85/178.92, and he ran a second-round solo at 7.67/180.00. In the semifinal, he beat Chuck Griffith with a 7.60/208.80. In the final, McEwen's 7.61/204 beat his 7.64/208.80. As April came to an end, Dave tried for another win at Beeline's Third Annual Fuel and Gas Championships on April 30. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, a 7.67/180.36 beat Ken Safford, but while coming to the line to face McEwen in the semifinal, Beebe found himself with no oil pressure and shut off. He rebounded by winning an eight-car show at Lions on May 7. A 7.59/204.54 qualified #4, and Dave ran 7.57/209.78 (Top Speed) and 7.67/205 to get to the final. He wasn't the quickest in the final, but he got there first with a 7.70/208.80, beating Safford's 7.63/201 in Ted Gotelli's car. On May 8 at Carlsbad for a Jackpot Pro-Circuit race, he ran a 7.61/192.70 in the final to win over Tommy Allen's quicker 7.57/208.32. He won again on May 22 at the Division 7 race at Sacramento, beating Don Cook in the final. A week later (May 28), he won a big sixteen-car show at Lions. A 7.66/202.70 beat Frank Pedregon in the first round, while in round two, his 7.59/207.37 beat Mulligan's quicker 7.51/204. A 7.54/215.34 beat an ailing Safford in the semifinals, and he wrapped up the win with a final round 7.53/215.30 that stopped Rick Stewart's 7.63/210. The following day he won at the Santa Maria Jackpot race. There he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.92/202.24. He didn't do so well at an eight-car show at Lions on June 4. Dave qualified #2 with a 7.42/211.76, and a 7.41/210.76 got past the first-round, but in the semifinals, his car failed to fire, and eventual winner Al Freeman advanced. A week later, he was back at Lions, where he ran 7.79 to qualify #5 in the eight-car field. He lost to Mulligan's 7.51/187 in the first round, with a 7.86/167.69, but John hurt his engine and could not continue, so Beebe got back in on the "break rule." After that, he stopped Nick Marshall's 7.69/204 in the semifinals with a 7.60/207.85. But in the final, he fouled away a 7.78 and lost to Carbone's 7.70. Another win came on July 23 at Irwindale when he stopped Jeep Hampshire in the final. He fouled in the final against John Edmunds on August 14 at the Bonneville Division 7 race. Another runner-up finish came on October 7 at an eight-car race at Carlsbad. After running 7.54/201.78 over Dominic Cardoza (8.07/200.48) and 7.44/205.46 over a motor-blowing Ronny Graham, he lined up against Leroy Goldstein in the final, and he lost a motor while Goldstein won with a 7.39/194.80. The following day (October 8) saw Beebe qualify first with a Low ET of the meet 7.39 and then leave, not hanging around to race and just testing their new motor. They tested it well as later that day, they showed up at Lions and qualified #1 with a track record 7.12. He went on to run a 7.27/201.78 in the first round, and a 7.30/168 in round two. In the final, he faced Jack Ewell and lost, taking another runner-up finish. Beebe won again on October 15 at Irwindale, setting Low ET in round one, with a 7.30/208.80 over Goldstein and Top Speed with a second-round 7.40/215.30 over Rick Stewart's 7.83/203.60. In the final, he beat Cardoza. Another big win came on October 22 at the Irwindale Grand Prix. A first-round 7.37/183.94 beat a fouling Gary Cassidy, and a final round 7.59/200.80 beat Gerry Glenn. Pete Robinson's 7.27/203.16 got him in the final at the NHRA World Finals. Another win came his way at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale on November 26. He took it all, qualifying #1 with a 7.19, which held for Low ET. He then set Top Speed at 216 and won the meet. On December 26 at the UDRA Championships at Irwindale, he qualified fifth with a 7.39/217.38 and a first-round 7.47/198.66 beat Bill Alexander. In the second round, he lost oil pressure and shut off on the line, advancing James Warren. - Ron Howard

Notes: Ran 7.58 (qualified #3) at AHRA Winters at Beeline Arizona 1965. AKA the Blue Car. Drag Sport Illustrated in a 1965 wrap up said this car was the scourge of the area. | Larry was driving this car at Lions for an eight-car show on January 16. The small 331 Hemi dominated the race over the bigger 392 powered cars. Faust qualified #1 with a 7.61/199.10 then set Low ET and Top Speed in a first-round victory over John Wilson with a 7.58/203.16. He had an easy run in the semifinals when Mike Sorokin fouled in the "Surfers" entry. Larry won the event, running a 7.63/201.78 in the final. As mentioned, he qualified #3 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but a first-round 7.98/200.88 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.60/200. He beat Tom McEwen to take Top Eliminator on the second day of the 2-day Summer Drag Racing Championships at Fontana on Aug. 22, 1965, with a 7.78, 204.54 clocking. He qualified in sixth place at the 1965 Hot Rod Magazine Championships at Riverside with a 7.68, 204.54 clocking. Photo: '65 Hot Rod Magazine Championships - MB

Notes: The team was attributed with a 225 mph run at Rockford, IL. This track routinely gave out very high mph readings in 1965, especially at UDRA events. 225 was the highest mph of the year by 10+ mph.

Notes: In 1969, B&M won the Winternationals in their 392-powered Woody car, which had debuted at the 1968 World Finals. By mid-summer of '69, the team had changed to a Ramchargers-sourced elephant motor. Qualified #1 (6.43) at Indy '69 with an all-time quickest ET on a low qualifying pass. The stunning time stood as the sport's best for a year. John ran three of the 15 fastest speeds in 1969. Originally listed a 241, but that time was not supported by Beebe-Mulligan.com, which cited a best 1969 speed of the 233.22 from Riverside. John died at Indy 1969 when he had a terrible fire during a first-round win. See racer website for details. - BM | Beebe-Mulligan reset the track record at Union Grove two days running in early June '69, with a 6.70 following the previous day's 6.71. - RT Mulligan started his '69 season at the AHRA Winternationals, where a 6.99 qualified second. As mentioned above, he failed to make it into the later rounds, but Pomona was a different story. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified with a 7.16/225.00. A first-round 7.12/221.13 beat Tom Larkin's 7.24/206. In round two, a 6.86/222.77 beat James Warren's 7.14/214. Bennie Osborn's 7.42 fell to John's 6.86/221.13 in the third round and a 6.93/217.91 beat Leroy Goldstein in the semifinal. For the win, a 6.95/211.38 beat Don Prudhomme's 8.52/126. It was quite a win, considering 82 cars fought for the 32 spots available. At the second OCIR All-Pro race at OCIR on February 9, a 6.94 qualified #3, but he lost a blower belt in the first round, slowing the car to a 7.11/208.80 that lost to Dave Beebe's 7.01/211. At the Stardust Open on February 16 at Las Vegas, a 7.12 qualified #2. Mulligan singled in the first round, when Tommy Allen's car wouldn't stay lit. In the second round, he set a 6.85 track record while beating Hank Westmoreland. In the semifinal, Ron Rivero lost to John's 6.90/221.57, setting up Pomona finalists in a rematch. This time, Prudhomme came out on top with a 6.94/216, beating John's 7.10/211.76 runner-up effort. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.88/225 beat Butch Maas' 6.95/222 in the first round, but in the second round, he lost a blower and the race to Steve Carbone. On March 16 at Riverside for the HRM Championships, John qualified #8 with a 7.01. In the first round, he beat Maas again with a 7.10/233.22 (Top Speed). A 7.14/216.86 beat Jerry Ruth's quicker 7.02/219 in round two, but he hurt some parts and could not return for the third round bringing Ruth back into the show on the break rule. Mulligan set Top Speed again at the final OCIR All-Pro race on March 29, when a first-round 7.06/222.76 beat Gerry Glenn. Against Prudhomme in the semis, he had a violent engine explosion and lost. He was not hurt. On May 30, he won over a sixteen-car field at US 131 Martin, Michigan. The times he turned here were strong. He opened up with a 6.62/232.55 (Top Speed) over Duke Ray in the "GuZler." In round two, he set Low ET with a 6.60/230.76 over Tommy Ivo. Prudhomme shut off on the line in the semifinal, and John still rocketed to a 6.67/231.36 on his single. In the final, he met and beat Don Cook with a 6.65/230.17. All four of his runs were in the 6.60's and all over 230 mph. His 6.60 and 232.55 were both track records. Nobody else there ran better than a 6.87, and nobody else even ran 217. It was quite a performance by the team. Shortly after this, John was the recipient of the Mike Sorokin Memorial Award. His peers voted for this award. Was John's Indy #1 qualifier a 6.437 or a 6.430. We show it in different ways but trying to find the final word.

Notes: Qualified on the bump at 75 World Finals. At the Irwindale Grand Premiere on Jan 5, Stan qualified #4 with a 6.29. That was pretty good considering there were 30 cars trying to qualify for the 16 spots. A 6.58 in the first round, lost to alternate Walt Rhoades' 6.24/224. | Hometown confirmed for 1975. Ran NHRA Pomona and Ontario. DNQ at the Winters (6.57/228.42) and qualified at Ontario at 5.932/243.90. Lost first-round to Herm Petersen, 6.10/238 to 6.99/229. Also ran 236.84 on 7/07/75.

Notes: Runner up at 87 Ennis All-Stars. Also 5.380 at 87 Gatornationals, which was one half of quickest side by side in history with Darrell Gwynn at 5.240. Dan was also half of fastest side by side race in history at the 87 Gators with his 270.43 and Dick LaHaie's 271.00. Best standard NHRA event times were 5.259 Pomona Finals 87 and 271.16 at Gainesville 3/87. | Dan was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.39/269.94 qualified #4. An opening round 5.43/266.90 advanced when opponent Tim Morgan crashed. But in round two, the car failed to fire for his race against Darrell Gwynn. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Pastorini qualified #7 with a 5.42/266.58. He improved to 5.40/271.16 in the first round, to beat Richard Holcomb and in round two, his 5.45/270.43 beat Dick LaHaie’s quicker, but later 5.44/271. Dan made his best run of the weekend in the semifinals, where he ran 5.38/265.64, but it wasn't enough to beat Gwynn’s 5.24/269. The NHRA Winston All-Star race was held in April at the Texas Motorplex. Dan qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.31/267.77. He ran a 5.23/272.39 in the first round, to trailer Connie Kalitta's 5.33/269 and in the semifinals, he stopped Don Garlits with a 5.37/267.85. He faced LaHaie in the final. Dick had run 5.24 twice in eliminations. Rain kept the final from being run until a week and a half later (April 15). In their race, Dan smoked the tires to 6.86/175.16 while Dick got the victory with a 5.37/268. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.58/259.51 qualified #13 and the number proved unlucky as he lost to Garlits in the first round. On May 9, he was at Fremont (Baylands) for a best of three match race against Don Prudhomme. The Funny Car driver was given a 3-tenths handicap. The "Snake" won their first race with a 5.81/237 over Pastorini's 5.72/242. Dan won the second race with a 5.76/240.64 when Don fouled and shut off. In the deciding race, Prudhomme shut off with tire shake and Dan blew an engine, but his 6.65/144.69 rolled across the line first giving him the match race victory. Shortly after that, he was at Tulsa for its Spring race. It was another eight-car show and Dan's 5.85/238.72 qualified #5. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round race with low qualifier Frank Bradley. The two had a good race, but Bradley's 5.69/249 beat Dan's 5.75/250.00. NHRA’s next race was the Cajun Nationals held at Baton Rouge. A 5.56/254.45 qualified #8, but rain held up the event. He and opponent Gene Snow never showed for their first-round race as they both packed up and headed for Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. This was Pastorini's first IHRA event. Dan qualified #2 with a 5.60/257. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.52 at 254 that beat Bob Strauss. He continued to look strong in the semifinals, where his 5.53/258 beat Jerry Marconi. He faced Hank Endres in the final. Things looked good for the "Coors" car, but Dan had a bit of bad luck as the oil pump broke, giving Endres a solo for the title. He enjoyed his first IHRA race enough that the following week (June 7), he went to Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. The field was short so he got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 5.53/259.36. But in the semifinals, he once again had to shut off on the line with no oil pressure, giving John Carey a free ride into the final. He then went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There, he ran 5.65/251.81 to qualify #10. But in the first round, Joe Amato's 5.47/262 beat his 5.79/247.93.

Notes: Steve was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but he lost to Jerry Ruth in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.81/228.42 qualified #4 in the 32 car field. He beat Jeb Allen in round one, before losing to Dennis Baca in round two. Steve qualified #1 at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.40/238.09, but he shut off on the line in the first round, advancing eventual winner Dwight Salisbury into round two. At the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont, Carbone qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field but lost to John Wiebe in the first round. The following week (March 18), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Steve qualified third at the 1973 NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.104/242.58. He beat Jon Hansen in the first round, with a 6.306/228.42 to 6.38/233 and Flip Schofield in the second with a 6.197/226.13 to 6.35/208 before losing fire against Jim Bucher in the semifinals. Qualifying #3 was quite impressive, considering that 50 cars attempted to make the sixteen-car field. On April 1, he was at LaPlace Dragway for the NHRA Division Four opener. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but a blower exploded in the opening round, and he lost to Vic Brown. Carbone had more trouble a couple of weeks later at the AHRA Grand American at Tulsa. There, his car broke on the line in the first round. On July 4, he was at Cornhusker for a best of three match race against Don Garlits. In their first race, Steve's 6.46/207.85 beat Don's 6.74/204. Carbone seemed assured of winning the match in their second race when his 6.27/210 beat Garlits' 6.67/213. Even though Carbone had won the match, the two came out for a final race. Garlits won by default as Carbone's car lost fire this time." Big Daddy" ran 6.33/227. The track record at Cornhusker before this race had been John Wiebe's 6.73/223. So Carbone was now the track ET record holder while Garlits got the speed end. At the 1973 AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis International Raceway. Top Fuel Eliminator, Qualifying. In the "Soapy Sales" dragster (near lane), Steve Carbone was the ninth qualifier at 6.59/223 but killed an engine and could not appear for the first-round. (Bret Kepner info). Steve also ran 6.47 at Phoenix.

Received a 254.01 mph national record at Bandimere because NHRA was still factoring times for the mile-high race plant. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1981. Jeb's 250.69 at Gainesville was the 7th entry in the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. Jeb won the 1981 NHRA Championship by 31 points over Gary Beck. | Jeb was the only driver that qualified for every NHRA national event in '81. He had switched to a 10-71 supercharger with a larger fuel pump and a hotter magneto for the season. His season started at OCIR for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing, where he won Top Fuel with a 5.86. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.86/246.57. A 5.87/245 beat Tony Ceraolo in round one, and he followed that up with a 5.84/245 single in the second round when Mike Tarter was unable to run. He was winning rounds but was burning pistons on almost every run. Allen stated that with his new engine set-up, the air/fuel mixture wasn't right. In the semifinals, his 5.86 beat Dave Settles' 5.94, and he grabbed the win with a final round 5.92/229.59 that beat Marvin Graham's 6.01/236. He then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #6, running 5.98/241.28 for the spot. Unfortunately, rain delayed the race one week, and Allen could not run the rain date as it fell on the same date as the NHRA Gatornationals (March 15). Jeb made quite a splash at Gainesville as he ran a 5.62/250.69 to qualify first. The 5.62 was the first time anyone had gone quicker than Don Garlits' historic 5.63 from '75. He failed to back up the time for a new NHRA record as in the first round, his 5.80/248.61 lost to Frank Bradley's 5.79/243. The following week he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals but rain-interrupted again, and the race was postponed one week until March 28. He qualified #3 with a 5.97/242 and a first-round 6.04/231 beat alternate Paul Romine's 6.20/223. In the semifinals, he fell off to a 6.39/209 that lost to Jody Smart's 6.05/243. The next NHRA event was the Cajun Nationals at Atlanta. It was a tough show to make as it was only an eight-car field. Jeb ran 5.86/236.84 to qualify #6. He beat Graham in the first round, with a 5.92/236.84, but a 6.00/241 in the semifinals lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.97/236. It was then off to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Allen qualified #3 with a 5.83 and a first-round 5.85/249.30 (Top Speed of the meet) beat Connie Kalitta. In the semifinals, he ran a good 5.89, but he finished behind Graham's even better 5.82. Another big win came at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.86/252.10 (Top Speed). His 6.00/247.93 beat Mike Tarter in the first round, while a 5.92 in the semifinals beat Mark Oswald. In the final, he ran Richard Tharp in the "Candies & Hughes" car. Tharp smoked the tires, and Allen ran 5.99/248.61 for the victory. A week later (May 24), he was back in the winner's circle at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Dragway. There he qualified #2 with a 5.87 and a first-round 5.99 beat a tire-smoking Graham. Tharp also smoked the tires against him in the semifinals, and Jeb's 6.02/243.90 advanced into the final. There he ran Terry Capp, and both had traction issues with Allen's 6.11/233.16 coming out on top over Capp's 7.15. Things didn't go as well at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.93/243.90 in qualifying placed him #7 in the field, but in the first round, his car broke, giving Jim Head an easy run into the second round. After that, it was off to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 5.93 at a track record speed of 244.56. A first-round 5.95/242.58 beat Capp, while in the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 5.92 at 243.24 to beat Johnny Abbott's 5.96/238. He faced David Pace driving the "Carroll Brothers" car in the final, and a 5.94/243.24 got Jeb another victory.

Notes: Frank started the year at the NHRA Winternats, where a 5.565/252.80 qualified eighth. He ran a first-round 5.606/249.30 over Larry Minor but a second-round 5.574/247.93 lost to Darrell Gwynn's 5.49/258.62. Frank didn't attend the following few NHRA events but was back in Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.675/242.98 qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field, but a 5.731/242.13 lost to Gary Beck's 5.63/250 in the first round. A best of 5.928/231.89 failed to qualify (third alternate) at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Bradley didn't go up north for the NHRA Grandnationals or race any other events until the World Finals, where he was the third alternate at 5.728/254.23. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. I think these were AHRA times.
