Notes: Likely Haase's greatest accomplishment this year was in June, taking Top Fuel Eliminator at the second Annual Hot Rod Magazine Championship at Riverside. Though qualifying in the middle of a 32-car field, Haase outlasted the likes of Yeakel Plymouth (McEwen), The Surfers (Sororkin), the Hawaiian (Prudhomme), the Bounty Hunter and Gotelli-Miliani. The final found him paired against the highly favored James Warren in the Warren-Crow car. Both cars encountered problems on the trophy run, but it was Haase who crossed the finish first. - RT | Ran a 7.75 at Indy US Nationals 9/65. |

Notes: Gary Beck debuted Larry Minor's new Swindahl-built car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. On the opening day of qualifying (Thursday), while everyone else was having trouble just trying to run a "five," Gary came out and ran 5.69. On Saturday, he picked it up to a 5.52/251.39, far ahead of #2 qualifier Jody Smart, who was in with a 5.77. Beck's had now qualified #1 for the fifth straight NHRA national event. He almost lost in the opening round, where the car broke a rear end and coasted through with a 19-second time, but his opponent, Richard Tharp, driving for Kilpatrick and Connell, fouled against him. Rain interfered, and the second round wasn't run until a week later. In that round, he ran 5.60 to beat Jim Barnard's 5.88. But in the semifinals, Beck faced Shirley Muldowney, and while she was streaking to a 5.68 to advance, Gary was filling the area with tire smoke as he overpowered the track. Everything went more according to plan at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, Beck qualified #1, this time with a 5.54/242.90. The spread to the #2 qualifier wasn't as large as at Pomona, as Shirley's 5.57/252 qualified #2. Beck opened with a 5.74/241.28 over Chris Karamesines' 5.91/241, and a strong 5.49/252.80 in round two took out Tharp's 5.63/252. In the semifinals, he faced his boss Minor, who, in round two, had opened some eyes with a 5.51. But Minor lost a blower belt while Gary ran a new NHRA record 5.44 at 252.10 to advance into the final. There, he faced Connie Kalitta, and the "Bounty Hunter" went into hard tire shake and shut off while Beck ran another 5.49 at 251.39 for the victory. The team's next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. This was an eight-car show, and Gary ran 5.55/245.90 for the pole. He streaked to 5.42 (Low ET) at 252 in the opening round of eliminations to beat Minor. His 5.56/246 beat Kalitta's 5.73/241 in the semifinals. He went up against Tharp in the final, and Richard had lane choice as he had won his semifinal race with a 5.54. But it seemed like Beck's crew chief, Bernie Fedderly, could make the car run just about any number he wanted. Beck ran 5.53/249 in the final to pick up another victory over Tharp's 5.70/245.World Champ 1983. Ran 5.391/252.10 at Fremont (first in the 5.3s), then duplicated the feat at the World Finals. Gary went 5.448 National Record at Gainesville to provide early season thrills. Photo from 1983 Cajun Nationals. |

Notes: After a 7.85 second DNQ at the Golden Gate Nationals, Frank Taylor's Dago Red team made a splash at the OCIR World Finals. Epperly twice ran 257.14 mph to set the national speed mark. He qualified #6 at 5.668/257.14. Rocky was a tenth quicker than Gene Snow in round one, but the veteran treed him, .508 to .661, and won by nearly a car length, 5.987/232.55 to 5.889/249.30. | Photo of Gary Read in 1984. Car was sold to Dan Pastorini, who was too big to fit in the car so he sold it to Eddie Hill. |

Notes: During Lions Drag Strip's "Back to School Rocking and Racing Spectacular" Randy ran 6.13 and 6.14 in winning the 8 car top fuel invitational. His 6.14/232.55 beat James Warren in the top fuel final and his earlier 6.13 reset the Lions track record. At the time, his 6.13 was the fourth quickest time ever recorded with only Jerry Ruth (6.06), Don Garlits (6.10), and Gary Beck (6.11) having run quicker. Also, number 2 qualifier at the 1972 NHRA Nationals with a 6.196/234.98, tying Clayton Harris for Top Speed of the Meet. Photo from the 1972 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Finished second in Division 7 points. Also ran 6.66 at Pomona, 6.48 at Columbus, 6.19 at Indy, 6.23 at Ontario. |

Notes: Don qualified #30 with a 7.86 at the NHRA Winternationals, but lost to Jim Dunn in the first round. May 1 saw Don facing off against the "Greek" Chris Karamesines at Island Dragway for a best of three match race. Don won two straight with times of 8.0/199.55 and 7.99/196.15. On May 7, Westerdale faced Connie Kalitta's SOHC Ford powered fueler in a best of three match at Capitol. Kalitta won the first race with a 7.35/221 over the "Ramchargers" 7.80/200.44. Don came back to win the second race with a 7.80/206.88 when Conrad fouled away a 7.61/211. In the final deciding race, Westerdale fouled, running 7.94/203.16 and losing the match to Kalitta's 7.49/215. He then went up against Don Garlits at Connecticut for another best of three match. Unfortunately, he lost two straight to "Big Daddy" and to add insult to losing, he blew his engine in the second race. His next match was a rematch against the "Greek" on May 14 at Detroit. Don won the first race, but in the second, his 'chute fell out and Karamesines grabbed the win. In the deciding race, Westerdale's 7.95/202.70 lost to Chris' 7.70/201. As May ended, the "Ramchargers" faced "Big Daddy" again at Oswego on the 29th. Garlits again beat them two straight. |

Notes: Not sure if Carbone was a co-owner. | On June 4, Steve was driving this car at an eight-car show at Lions. He set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 7.41/202.24. A first-round 7.51/189.46 beat Dwight Salisbury, but a wheelstand in the semifinals slowed him to 8.13/154.63 that lost to Jack Ewell's 7.57/212. Carbone was runner-up to Danny Ongais at an eight-car show at Carlsbad on June 10. His final round 7.78/208.80 lost to Ongais' 7.58/209. The next day (June 11), he was back at Lions for another eight-car show. He qualified #2 with a 7.54/212.26 (Top Speed), and then went on to win by first getting around a non-firing John Martin in round one, with a 7.65/211.76 and then beating Ron Rivero in the semifinals. Steve took the victory in the final with a 7.70/182.92 when Dave Beebe fouled against him. At the HRM Championships at Riverside, a 7.62/205.46 qualified #13 in the 32 car field. He failed to make it to the finals. Steve ran really well at an eight-car show at Irwindale on June 25. He qualified #1 with a 7.56 and set a new track speed record at 215.30 in the first round. His ET wasn't too bad either as he tied the track record at 7.45. Unfortunately, in winning his first-round race, he blew his engine and opponent Gary Southern, in the "Wilton and Doss" car got back in on the break rule. On July 9, he was back at Irwindale for another eight-car show. Once again he won his first-round race with a 7.66/199.54 over Ron Hampshire, but this time he lost a blower so Hampshire returned via the break rule. |

Notes: The KING. Jerry ran 7.31 at Arlington, WA (May 1965) and 7.24 at Puyallup (May 1965). He crashed on a 202.70 mph run when the engine blew in the lights in July 1965. Jerry was the quickest Top Fuel car in 1965. Ruth's car was featured in a December issue of Drag News. This was a feature on his second car of the season as he had wrecked one on July 4th when the car barrel-rolled through the traps at 200mph. He was unhurt but a little sore. This was his third Woody Gilmore-built car, and the chassis was 150". It used a 392 Hemi with M/T rods and Venolia Pistons. Engle supplied the cam. The car weighed 1,280 lbs. |

Notes: Fourteenth member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club on February 20/1994, with a 300.60 at Phoenix. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Also 4.789 at Houston 94 and 4.807 at Arizona 94. Photo from 1994 US Nationals. | Conrad started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 4.97/271.32 was good for the sixth alternate. He ran much better at Arizona for the NHRA Quality Care Nationals where his 4.82/294.69 qualified #5. He beat Bob Vandergriff's 5.05/282 in the first round, with a 4.89/300.60. In round two, a 4.83/298.11 beat Mike Dunn's 4.88/289. Kalitta ran a personal best ET (up to this point) in the semifinals with a 4.80/298.90. Unfortunately, it came in a loss to eventual winner Cory McClenathan's Low ET of the meet 4.74/298 mph blast. |

Notes: Rhonda was at Bristol in September for the IHRA Autumn Nationals. Her 5.14/286.19 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. She improved to 5.06/262.13 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough, as she lost to low qualifier Paul Romine's 4.88/281. At IHRA Stanton, she qualified 3rd at 4.91/302 but lost to Wayne Bailey in round one. Photo from 1997 IHRA Northern Nats, Stanton, MI. |
