Notes: Al qualified #11 at NHRA Gainesville at 6.710/226.13. In round one, he lost a close one to Jim Paoli, 6.65/207 to 6.72/226.70. Al set Low ET and Top Speed at Richmond's 'Springnationals' event on 5/23/71 but had troubles on a later run, and Richie Broughton went on to win the event in the Comanche car. He was at Suffolk on June 20 for an eight-car show. In round one, his 6.81/211.26 beat Eddie Careccia, but he fouled against Ted Thomas, who was driving the "Jade Grenade" in the semi-final. In July, Friedman was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 6.754 qualified #8. Clayton Harris had trouble against him in the first round and shut down while Al's 6.89/218.97 advanced. He caught a good light in round two, and his 6.79/216 beat Bill Hansen's 6.77/226. Unfortunately, the car lost fire in the semi-final against eventual winner Arnie Behling. Al qualified #17 at NHRA Indy at 6.549/230.76. In round one, he lost to Don Garlits, 6.28/230 to 6.65/223.88. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Carl qualified #16 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.20/214.79. In the first round, an off-pace 7.37 lost to Connie Kalitta's 7.13 in his Boss 429-powered car. He did have the satisfaction of setting Top Speed at 225.00. On February 29, he and 34 others showed up at OCIR for the second All-Pro event. With only eight spots up for grabs, the qualifying was hectic, and Carl failed to make the show. He ran a 7.07 to qualify #15 at the HRM Championships at Riverside on March 16. But a first-round 7.35/222.22 was no match for Hank Clark's 6.99/220. On June 7, the team was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. Twelve cars attempted to make the field, and Olson qualified #1 with a 7.01/216.34. In round one, he beat Glen Woolsey's 7.18/205 with a 7.02/220.58 (Top Speed of the meet). In the semifinals, Olson ran Low ET with a 6.99 at 217.38 to beat Tommy Allen. This put him into the final against Chuck Griffith in the Ford-powered "Starlite" dragster. Carl smoked the tires while Chuck got the win with a 7.16/220. He raced at an eight-car show at Irwindale on September 13. The team had just switched to a 426 Hemi. A 7.06 qualified fifth, but he improved to a 7.02/220.58 in the first round to beat low qualifier Dwight Salisbury's 7.10/197. In the semifinal, a 6.95/216.34 beat a shutting-off Norm Wilcox. In the final, a 6.96/222.22 defeated Frank Pedregon's 7.21/210.; Photo: Drag Racing Hero's: Dragsters website - MB |

Notes: Ran 230.76 at Winters but was not backed up for the record. Ruth qualified #19 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.18/220.58. He lost to the eventual winner James Warren, in the opening round of eliminations. His 7.16/220.58 fell to Warren's 6.87/230. His next stop was at Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. He qualified #13 but once again lost to Warren in the first round, of racing. Things didn't go too well at the big 64 car PDA Championships held at OCIR in March. He lost early there as well. At Mission B.C., Ruth set a 6.93 track record. On July 20, for the PDA Championships at Lions, Ruth qualified with a 6.91/227.84. He ran a best of 6.88/230.76 in the semifinal before beating John Mulligan with a 6.93/227.26 in the final. He was at Keystone Dragways in Canada for the Canadian Nationals in August. He set a track speed record of 219.40 and made it into the final, where he lost to John Wiebe. |

Notes: Carl was at OCIR on January 4 for the first All-Pro race. In the opening round, his 6.95/216.34 lost to John Wiebe's 6.76/216. He failed to qualify for the second All-Pro race held on January 18. The following week (January 26), the "Ewell-Bell" car was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, his 7.02/209.30 in the opening round lost to Ron Hampshire's 6.85/216. The team qualified #4 at Pomona with a 6.823/227.27 (Top Speed of the Meet). Carl beat Earl Binns in round one, 7.050/223.32 to 7.16/212, but broke in round two against Jim Davis. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.93 qualified #9 in the 32 car field. In round one, his 7.09 beat Frank Bradley's quicker 7.06. In round two, Carl's 6.96/220 lost to Norm Wilcox's 6.85/225 in the "California Charger." Carl ran 6.84 at Irwindale on 7/4/70. Carl was a DNQ at NHRA Ontario, but we are not sure which car that was. |

Notes: Ran one NHRA national event - the Gatornationals - and ran a good 6.881 at a booming 230.76 to qualify #9. That lined Cliff up against Big Daddy, and Garlits took the round one match, 6.56/215 to 6.99/210. We think these times belong to this machine and not the other car Cliff drove this year. |

Notes: This shot of Jerry Ruth and Don Garlits (semifinal action at the 1983 AHRA GrandNats, Dragway 42, Ohio) by Rick Howard was "frame grabbed" from his Super 8mm film. Bee-On Video plans to feature Midwest racing soon using several movies from Rick. | Ruth started his '83 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.55, but failed to make the finals. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified number eight with a 5.839 240.69. He improved to a 5.76/242.58 in the first round, while beating Rance McDaniel and in round two, a consistent 5.77 beat Scott Kalitta. In the semifinals, he lost to Jody Smart. |

Notes: George's beauty was one of the sport's fastest cars this year. He qualified on the "bump" for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.056/240.64. In the opening round, an off-pace 6.234/195.22 lost to Doug Kerhulas at 5.92/240. Shortly after, he was in St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A 6.32/220.59 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. In the first round, he lost to the eventual winner Don Garlits. | In 1982, Chuck built four identical cars, one for Connie Kalitta, Scott Kalitta's first car, George Tolon's car, and Stan Rosen's Ego Trip. - Chuck Kurzawa III, Draglist LIVE, 2/27/23 |

Notes: Ritter started the '75 season at the fourth annual Irwindale Grand Premiere on Jan 5. He qualified #5 in the sixteen-car show and in the first round, beat Bill Carter with a 6.24/219.51. In the second round, a 6.34/189.47 advanced when Bob Noice broke on the line. In the semifinals, he lost to a holeshot 6.37/230 by Walt Rhoades with a quicker 6.31/226.13. He then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals where he lost early in eliminations. The following week (February 2), Ritter was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but failed to qualify. Gary ran strong at Bakersfield for the March Meet. A 6.13/239.36 qualified #11 in the 32 car field. An opening round 6.16/239.36 beat Tom Toler's close 6.17/230 and in round two, he advanced when Rance McDaniel's Chevy failed to fire. In round three, his 6.09/234.98 stopped Dennis Baca's 6.19/231, but in the semifinals, his 6.20/223.88 lost to eventual winner James Warren's 5.87/235 low et of the meet run. Also in March, he went to OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West. There he qualified #5 with a 6.34/226.13 in the sixteen-car show. Ritter ran an easy 6.62/181.45 single in the first round, when Rick Ramsey lost fire on the line, but in round two he shut off early against Frank Bradley and lost. His next stop was at Sacramento in April for an eight-car show. Twenty cars were trying to qualify and Gary failed to make the cut. He also failed to qualify at Irwindale's Fox Hunt race. It was another eight-car show that had twenty-two cars attempting to qualify. Ran 6.0s at 239 at Indy. Number one qualifier at Seattle Fallnationals 1975 with his best times of the year. Also, ran 5.989/241.28 at Ontario World Finals 1975. |

Notes: Second fastest speed at Indy that year. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Ran 6.34 at Columbus, 6.26 at Indy Shirley did not run at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but she was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, she failed to qualify. Muldowney skipped Bakersfield and failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals. She was at Seattle in May for the Fifth Annual Northwest open, but with 21 cars attempting to qualify for the eight-car show she was one of thirteen that failed to get in. Muldowney was still learning with her Top Fuel car, but by the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus, she qualified for the field with a 6.34/224.42 (#14). A 6.47/215.31 in the first round, lost to Grant Stoms' 6.17/233. Shirley also qualified for the IHRA Northern Nationals at Mid-America Dragway and while she didn't win or even make the final, she did set Top Speed at 228.00. Shirley only skipped two NHRA Nationals events, the Summernationals and the Grandnationals. A 6.47 best at Martin, Mich., failed to qualify for the PHR Championships. She was not alone in failing to qualify for the sixteen-car field as 39 cars attempted and "names" like Gary Beck, Clayton Harris, Tommy Ivo, and others also failed to make the field. On August 19, Shirley was at New York National for the PRO National Challenge race. She qualified well for the 32 car show and in the first round, beat Larry Dixon's Chevy powered car. In the second round Muldowney ran a 6.09 (season best) to advance. She lost in the next round. Her next stop was Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. A 6.26/241.28 qualified #27 in the 32 car field. Bob Noice's 6.21 in the first round, beat her early shut off 6.56 at 177.51. |

Notes: Bruce won a three-car event at Albuquerque on August 11, tying the Hawaiian's track speed record with a 7.60/221. He really impressed at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where he ran 6.110/241.28 to qualify #5 in the 32-car field. This was ahead of most of the big names in the show. But despite qualifying so well, he fell off to 6.368/233.16 in the first round and lost to Gaines Markley's 6.19/233. To show that his Indy performance was no fluke, he was in Denver the following weekend (September 8) for the final NHRA Division Five race. There, he dominated the show. In round one, his 6.74/212.76 defeated Junior Kaiser's 6.77/213. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinal, where his 6.55/216.34 stopped newly crowned Division Five champion Mark Williams' 6.66/215. A final round 6.60/216.34 easily won over Jack Harris's 6.94/216. Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. |

Notes: Raced 74/78, died 78. 6.14/238.72 Beeline Dragway Phoenix Winter Classic | Jim started his season at Ontario Motor Speedway's New Year's Day race. He qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.50, but it took its toll on the motor, and he was unable to run eliminations. He then went to Irwindale for the Grand Premiere event. It was another sixteen-car field, and he just got in on the "bump" with his 6.59/160. In the opening round, his competition, Ken Moitoza, broke on the burnout, so Jim ran an easy solo to advance. In round two, he smoked the tires and lost to Larry Dixon's 5.99/226. His next race was the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson. A great 6.21 qualified #4, and in round one, his 6.37 beat Bill Pryor's 6.48. In round two, John Wiebe went up in smoke against him, and Plummer's 6.27/228.42 advanced. But an off-pace 6.67/200.00 lost to the eventual winner Frank Bradley's 6.29/211 in the semifinals. He continued to run well at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Classic. His 6.13/238.72 qualified #9. He faced low qualifier James Warren in the first round, and dialed in too much power as he smoked the tires hard coming off the line and then shut off to 24.15 in a loss to Warren's 5.97/239. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.05/241.28 just missed making the 6.04 "bump." |

Notes: AKA California Woody. Photo may have been taken in the mid-'60s in MN at his parents' house. | Dave was driving the "Babler & Clark" car at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale on April 2. He beat Dave McKenzie in the first round, with a 7.82/200.00 and in the second round, a 7.88/197.80 beat Don Hampton. In the semifinal, he lost to the eventual winner Mike Snively, in the "Hawaiian." The following week (April 9), he was back at Irwindale where he lasted until the second round before losing to Snively again. On April 23, Irwindale held another one of its weekly sixteen-car shows. Dave qualified #9 with a 7.89, but met the low qualifier, the "Hawaiian," in the first round. Babler tried hard, running a 7.68/209.40, but again he lost to Snively (7.45/210). Luck was on his side, however, when Nick Marshall had won his first-round race, but had lost his engine and was unable to run the second round. Dave got back in on the "break rule," having run the lowest ET of the first-round losers. He was reinstated. In the second round, he beat the "Howard Cam Special" with a 7.75/205.46. Dave ran his best time of the day in the semifinal, a 7.60/206.42, but he lost to a holeshot 7.63/196 by Jim Dunn. On May 1 he was a San Fernando for an eight-car event and while he didn't win or even make the final, he did set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.84/212.76. |

Notes: Connie started the 1988 season very slowly but found the combination at the final few NHRA national events. He started the season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #7. In the opening round, he lost to Gary Ormsby. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was the fourth alternate at 5.54/254.38. He also attempted to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he was the second alternate at 5.46/266.74. The IHRA Texas Nationals was rained out. The day before the race was run, the teams were allowed a test and tune run. Kalitta ran a career-best (to this point) 5.22. He had actually qualified #10 in the field with a 5.29/263.34. However, his 5.32/258 in the opening round fell to Gene Snow's 5.20/274. At Memphis, for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, his 5.40/260.94 qualified #11. Once again, he lost in round one, where he shut down to 14.56/49.41, losing to Mike Brotherton's 5.82/249. Shortly after that (May 22), Kalitta was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #5 and couldn't shake the first-round blues as his 5.53/249.44 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.40/269. The following week (May 29, he was in Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Kalitta's 5.33/273.80 qualified #8. But as was the case later, an off-pace 5.73/203.16 in the first round lost to Bill Mullins' 5.62/242. | 4/09/1988 - Connie Kalitta wins the inaugural Winston Invitational, 5.19 seconds at 276.0 mph. His 5.09 at the Supernationals was half the quickest side-by-side pass (Amato 5.071). He ran his best times of the season there in qualifying #4 at 5.06/283.01. He also ran 5.080 at the World Finals.
