Notes: Speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats, but best NHRA ET Jim shows for 1991 is 4.936 at Maple Grove (at Sonoma equaling 287.72). Need to confirm if the 4.92 is legit and took place at an IHRA event or special event, etc. Didn't win a race this year but a string of semifinal finishes led to a 4th place finish in the championship.

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1982 NHRA SpringNats, Columbus, Ohio. Qualified 4th at 5.80/221.13. Defeated Jim Barnard in round one but was a no-show against Lucille Lee in next round. (Lee wound up runner-up to Shirley Muldowney in first NHRA all-female final.) | Jeb debuted his new car at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals on May 30. It took four attempts, but he finally qualified for the eight car show in the #7 position with a 5.89-236.22. He lost to Lucille Lee's 5.97-238 in the first round with a 6.08-237. At the NHRA Springnationals, as mentioned, he qualified #4 and failed to show in round two. On July 4 he followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. It was an eight car show and in the first round his 5.89 lost to eventual winner Connie Kalitta's 5.79. He was runner-up at the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.71 and in the first round his 5.79 beat Dwight Salisbury. Another 5.79 in round two got him into the semifinals where he beat Lee. In the final, he was the underdog despite his string of 5.70s as he came up against Mark Oswald in the "Candies & Hughes" car that had earlier reset the NHRA TF record to 5.61. Allen tried hard, running a great 5.73-246.57 in the final but he lost to Oswald's 5.70-252. At the end of July, he was at Bandimere Speedway in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #3 in the eight car show with a 6.00 and he made his way into the final by beating Bruce Hagestad and Lee in the semifinals with a 6.17-232.55 over her 6.40-236. In the final he faced Salisbury and Dwight stopped him with a track record 5.90 that beat Jeb's 6.12-235.60 runner-up effort. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals in the middle of August, he qualified last in the eight car field with a 5.81-245.90. He lost to Oswald in the first round. On Sept 6 he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. A 5.73-238.72 qualified #10, setting up a first round meeting with eventual winner Shirley Muldowney which the lady won with a 5.56.

He qualified first with a 7.42-201.34 and won his first round race with a 7.55-206.42. In the semifinals, he fouled away a 7.15-212 against Don Cook. The following day (May 12), he was at Tulsa for another Pro Fuel Circuit race. Osborn set low ET at 7.11 but in the semifinals, his 7.35 lost to Cook's 7.25. He won an eight car show at Oklahoma City on May 18. In the final there, he ran 7.21-220.34 (top speed) to beat Vic Brown's fouling 7.25-219 in the "Creitz & Greer" car. Bennie was at Tulsa for a Texas Pro Fuel Circuit race on June 9. Twenty-six cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen car show. Osborn got Low ET of the meet with his 7.13 taking the pole. He lasted until the semifinal before losing to John Wiebe when Bennie had a freeze plug come off and got water under the tires. At Englishtown on June 17 for the NHRA Springnationals, Osborn qualified #2 with a 6.86. Unfortunately, he fouled against Chris Karamesines in the first round. The Pro Fuel Circuit held an eight car event at Amarillo on June 23. Bennie qualified #4 with a 7.44 but in the first round he improved to a 7.27-211.36 to beat Jim Nicoll. A 7.41 in the semifinals fell to the race's eventual winner, Kenny Bernstein's 7.37. Another win came at the NHRA Divisional race at Opelousas, LA, on June 30. There, his final round 6.83 got the win over a fouling Jimmy Nix.

Notes: The Shelby Super Snake dragster was a deal in 1968. Shelby sponsored the Prudhomme driven Baney Special. Don Prudhomme and Lou Baney entered into '68 with hopes to run as well as they had in '67. Ed Pink continued to build the SOHC engines for the team and Carroll Shelby stepped up with sponsorship. Things started out OK for the team when they went to Carlsbad on Jan 14 for a best two out of three match against Don Garlits. Prudhomme won the first race with a holeshot 7.01-223.86 over Garlits who lost a rod on the run and ran 6.95-209. Garlits was done for the day as the damage was too much to repair. Tom McEwen was the backup car for the match but he too had broken earlier so the "Snake" soloed to a tire smoking 7.21-226.70 to win the match. A week later (Jan 21), he was at Beeline in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. Traction was not at its best as Don qualified #10 with a 7.43. He ran a 7.56-210.28 in the first round to beat Bob Mayer's quicker 7.44-192. He beat Don Cook in round two and he had an easy win in round three (32 car field). In the semi-finals Chuck Kurzawa fouled against him in the "Ramchargers" car. This put him into the final against Pete Robinson but Robinson had broken. So Prudhomme got to single for the win. Prudhomme and Baney had a big decision to make as M&H were offering contingency money to racers winning using their tires. Baney was a Goodyear supporter so the team elected to remain on the Goodyears in the final. Don ran 7.25-221.12 for the victory. At the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #20 in the 32 car show with a 7.19-187.50. In the first round he picked up to 7.04-222.76 to beat Dave Powers 7.15-214. In the second round he advanced when Hank Westmoreland fouled. The "Snake" made a rare mistake in round three when he was on his way to a win over Dwight Salisbury but he pulled the 'chute early and his 7.14-186.32 lost to Dwight's 7.19. At the Stardust Open at Las Vegas, Prudhomme qualified #10 in the sixteen car field but he lost to a holeshot by Tom Larkin in the first round. On March 3 the team was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. Don qualified with a 7.07 and he lasted until round two when the dragster pulled two wheelies off the line and he shut off, losing to McEwen. He lost to McEwen at the next race as well. It was the Bakersfield March Meet and Don ran 7.11 to qualify #18 in the 32 car field. A first round 7.22-202.70 lost to Tom's 7.02-202.

Notes: Texas & Tharp -- Damnest Things You Ever Seen. Photo from Indy 1980. One thing for sure, Tharp wasn't scared to put his foot into it until the last mph light. Always a threat for Top Speed of the meet. Tharp qualified #7 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.90-247.93. He ran a first round 6.01-246.47 over Marvin Graham. In the second round, Tharp beat Frank Bradley with a 6.05-243.90 to Frank's 6.12-220. In the semifinals, Connie Kalitta's 5.98-238 beat his 6.11-243.90. They went to Gainesville for the Gatornationals and didn't qualify very well but he still made it to the semifinals before losing to Gary Beck. Richard grabbed a big win the following week (March 23), at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 and beat Jeb Allen in the first round in a close 6.02-243.24 to Allen's 6.03-238. In the semifinals, Dick LaHaie broke giving Tharp an easy (?) 6.06-243.90 (Top Speed) run into the final to face Connie Kalitta. Both had run bests of 6.02 at the race so it was anticipated to be close. Unfortunately, for Kalitta, he smoked the tires and lost with a 7.25-132 while Tharp motored to a 6.05-243.90 for the win. On March 30, NHRA held its second Division Four race at Green Valley. Tharp qualified first with a 6.18 and set Top Speed at 238.72 but he lost in the semifinals to Beck's 6.39-222 with a close 6.41-234.98. Beck stopped him again on April 27 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals this time in the first round with a 6.04 beating Tharp's 6.05. He took another first round loss at the Divisional race at Gulfport International where his 6.11-234.98 lost to Jeb Allen's 6.09-240. He looked like he was on the way to a sure victory at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He had set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying at 5.82-247.25 and he stopped Jeb in the first round with a 5.91-243 to Allen's 5.95-242. In the semifinal, a 5.95-240 beat Mark Oswald's 6.09-237. In the final, he was to face Bob Hilton in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car but Tharp lost a rear end and Hilton soloed for the win. The team then traveled to National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals on June 8 with high Expectations. A 5.93-242.58 qualified first but in the first round, a 6.03 was beaten by Kalitta's 5.97. It was a bitter disappointment for the team. Especially since they were running so good. On June 28 they were at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Tharp beat Don Garlits in the first round of the eight car show with a 6.13-240.00 (Top Speed). In the semifinals, Jerry Ruth stole their thunder, running a track record 5.98-231 over Tharp's 6.06-235.60. Another #1 qualifying position came at the NHRA Summernationals. This time, a 5.85-245.90 got the spot. A first round 5.90-243.90 beat Bradley's 5.98-233 but Tharp lost to Dick LaHaie in the second round despite setting Top Speed at 246.57 trying to catch him. The following week (July 20), found the team a Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Tharp qualified #4 with a 5.96 and improved to a 5.82-243.90 in the first round while beating Hilton. In the semifinals, he slowed to a 6.07 and lost to Oswald's 5.94-245. On Aug 3, it all came together at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. They qualified first with a 5.87-240.64 (nobody else was in the fives), set Low ET in the first round with a 5.86-247.25 beating Kalitta, and in the semifinals, Tharp set Top Speed with a 5.92-247.93 pass that took out Hilton's 5.98-236. In the final, he met Jeb Allen and beat him with a 5.91-247.25 to Jeb's 6.20-237. The 247.93 was a new IHRA speed record. The team bypassed the NHRA Grandnationals event in Canada. At the U.S. Nationals, a 5.85-237.46 qualified #4 but they failed to make the finals.

Very soon thereafter, they were among the first to enter Mickey Thompson's famed "200 MPH Club." In that season, they also won the famed 1964 Bakersfield, CA. Notes: Ran 7.04-221.66 in winning 4th Hot Rod Magazine championships at Riverside in April 1967 over Gene Brown. Ran 7.362-213.28 at Pomona Winters 67. | Mike started the '67 season at Irwindale for an eight car show on Jan 29. He qualified #3 with a 7.36. In advanced past the first round when Paul Sutherland fouled. In the semifinal, he got another free ride when Don Prudhomme fouled in Lou Baney's Ford. In the final, he was supposed to run Dave Beebe, but Beebe had lost his clutch and the team was unable to repair in time so they loaded up the dragster on the trailer and proceeded to line up their tow rig with trailer attached to run against Mike in the final. Mike won the event with a final run of 7.31-214.76. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Snively was hoping for a repeat win. As mentioned above, his 7.36 qualified #10 in the 32 car show. In round one he beat Hampshire with a 7.38-212.26. In round two he ran his best time during the meet, a 7.35 at 212.26 but he lost to Connie Kalitta's 7.24-214. The following week (Feb. 12), he was at Irwindale again for another eight car show. Mike qualified #5 with a 7.29, 197.36. He advanced past the first round when Danny Ongais fouled. In the semifinal, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.10-217.90 in beating Leroy Goldstein's 7.13-207 in the "Crower & Blair" car. Snively faced Gerry Glenn in the "Andre, Trapp, and Glenn" car. Gerry stepped up to a 7.10-205.00 in the final to beat the "Hawaiian's" 7.32-172.41. He won the first annual Stardust National Open at Las Vegas. James Warren was his final round victim. Notes: Per David Pace, this run took place at Bristol in 1976 or 1977. David took over the car and drove from 79 to 81. Need confirmation on the Bristol year.
