Notes: Marvin's luck turned around in 1980, and he set a new record ET at 5.683/248.61 at Indy and won Sanair with 5.777/247.93 numbers. He also was runner-up to Shirley Muldowney at Seattle. The team set Low ET and or Top Speed at several national events. Marvin ended the season as the Division 6 Top Fuel Champion and placed fourth in the NHRA driver points race. The team raced two cars this year. Low qualifier at Indy 1980. Low qualifier at Sanair 80 at 5.812/243.24. Ran 242.58 at Ontario 80. For sale ad claimed a 5.84 average ET for 1980. Marvin qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his 6.14/234.98 in the first round, lost to Richard Tharp's 6.01/246 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He was at the Bakersfield March Meet but failed to reach the finals, and at the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #13 and lost to Bob Noice in round one. He picked up a win at the NHRA Divisional race at Beeline, where he ran a final round 6.36/232.55 to stop Phil Lukens. On March 30, Graham was at Green Valley for the NHRA Division 4 race. He lost in the first round. The Marc Danekas team started to pick it up in April. At the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Fremont, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 5.86/240.64. He ran steady 6.0's to advance to the final, where he picked up to 5.92/245.23 (Top Speed) to get the victory over Noel Reese. At the second NHRA Division 6 race at Seattle, he again qualified #1 with a 5.99/240.00 in the eight-car show. A first-round 5.97 beat Doug Kerhulas' 6.28. In the semifinals, he ran 5.94/241.93 but lost to Jerry Ruth's Low ET run of 5.91/240. The third NHRA Division 6 race was held at OCIR on May 17, and Marvin ran 5.94/246.57 to qualify #2 behind Gary Beck's 5.89. Unfortunately, Graham had troubles in the first round, and his 6.49/238.09 lost to Mark Prudhomme's holeshot aided 6.69/190. The team continued to qualify well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where Graham's 5.95/240.64 qualified #2. In the first round, he had an engine let go in the bleach box and could not run his opponent Steve Stephens. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Graham's 5.89/240.64 qualified #4. He picked up to a 5.85/242.58 in the first round, to beat Kerry Sweigart, and in the second round, Beck's car broke on the line, so he soloed with a 5.94/239.36. But in the semifinals, he hazed the tires to a 6.02 that wasn't enough to beat Jeb Allen's 5.92. |

Notes: Noice definitely liked the Donovan. He was one of the earliest users of the engine. He rode the crest when the Donovan ran really well in Top Fuel competition until when it started to fall behind the late model aluminum engines in '76. Bob continued to run the 417 through that rough time and when Ed Donovan developed some new heads for the engine it got a reprieve and lasted a few more years in TF. From '77-'79 the engine did good, but by '80 the late model engines from Milodon and Keith Black were now pushing the Donovan out of Top Fuel competition for good. Of the Donovan powered cars left in the running by 1980, Noice had the strongest. At the NHRA Winternationals he was the only one using the motor to make the show and he qualified #8 with a 5.910/237.46. He beat Chris Karamesines in the first round, before losing to John Kimble in round two. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he lost to Shirley Muldowney in the first round. Bob qualified #5 with a 5.96 at the Gatornationals, where he was once again the only Donovan in the show, but he lost early. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, the PRO classes were eight-car fields and Noice failed to qualify with a best of 6.08. Bob continued to qualify well for the sixteen-car shows using the "outdated" Donovan motor. A 6.01/248.61 (Top Speed) qualified #8 at the NHRA Springnationals. He beat Jody Smart in the first round, but in round two against Larry Brown, he broke two rods and oiled the track in a loss. On June 28, he was at the NHRA Mile High Nationals where a 6.04 qualified #2. He goofed up in the first round, against Jeb Allen when he left before the tree was actuated. |

Notes: Ernie was a DNQ at the Pomona Winternatinoals. He was at Sacramento on June 27 for the NHRA Western Regional. Notes: Johnson was one of 54 drivers at OCIR at the end of June, attempting to qualify for the PDA Championships' 32 car field. His 6.72 qualified #19. A 6.99 in the opening round fell to Don Prudhomme's 6.60. He was at Portland in August for the fourth NHRA Division Six race. In the first round, Gary Cromwell's Chevy-powered car sneezed a blower, and Johnson made an easy solo to advance. In the semi-final, he fouled against eventual winner Jerry Ruth. Hank only entered one NHRA national event in 1971, and he won it. At the NHRA Supernationals in Ontario, he qualified #2 at 6.618/212.26, right after Jerry Ruth's 6.53/219. Hank then marched through the 32-car field with consistency and luck. In round one, he ran 6.66/224.43 (Top Speed of the Meet) to beat Dwight Hughes at 6.84/201. In round two, a 7.37/123.79 defeated Denny Fitt at 7.10/163.33 (an incredible holeshot!) Round three saw Hank return to the 6.60s, and he needed every bit of a 6.68/223.32 to hold off Dave Uyehara's 6.74/214. Chip Woodall did not show in the semis, and Hank ran a 6.78/167.28 to enter the final. He took out John Wiebe's 6.50 machine with a 6.617/218.44 as Wiebe fell off to a 7.30/182 at Ontario Supernationals. It was said that Johnson used the same 'slow staging' technique Steve Carbone had used against Don Garlits at Indy that year. Wiebe had gone 6.53 and 6.56 but went up in smoke against Johnson in the final. |

Notes: Listed times from Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 4, Fall 1990 issue has 283.91. | Bernstein made his Top Fuel debut at Firebird Raceway in January It was a test and tune race, and he made six passes. The first was a half-track 7.17/96.96. The next three runs were 5.58/240.38, a 5.31/260.86, and a 5.42/264.16. His next run was the best, a 5.16/266.90. His last run resulted in a 5.47/221.29. Not too bad for his first time out, but he hoped for better at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Crew Chief Dale Armstrong gave him what he wanted when he tuned it up to a 5.07/268.09 to qualify #7 at Pomona. Kenny got lucky in round one, when his tire smoking 5.72/252.95 beat Chris Karamesines who was also having trouble. In round two, Kenny stepped up to 5.01/276.15 while beating Darrell Gwynn's identical 5.01 at 279. Unfortunately, Bernstein fouled against eventual winner Lori Johns in the semifinals. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #14 with a 5.16/274.13, but lost to Shirley Muldowney in the first round. Bernstein almost broke into the "four's" at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals when he ran 5.00/277.34 to qualify #6. But in the first round, he lost to Eddie Hill. His luck wasn't made better at Darlington the following week for the IHRA Winternationals. There he smoked the tires and lost to alternate Fred Farndon in round one. The next stop for the "Budweiser King" was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.08/267.37 qualified #5, but in the first round, both he and Karamesines smoked the tires and the "Greek" recovered first for the win. The team was eager to get past the first-round, but it didn't happen at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There Bernstein's 5.14/279.32 qualified #14, and he lost to Dick LaHaie in the first round. He was at Memphis in May for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals and for the first time since Pomona, Kenny made it past the first-round. He qualified #5 with a 5.06. He ran 5.06 in the first two rounds to beat Jim Head and Hill to advance into the semifinals where he lost to Joe Amato's 4.99. |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Also ran 4.944 low qualifier at Topeka 91. Photo from 1991 US Nationals. | Hill was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #7 with a 5.03/277.94. Cory McClenathan broke against him in the first round, so Hill advanced with a 5.39/267.77. In round two, he got another easy win when Joe Amato had problems and a 5.92/271.08 moved him into the semifinals. There he met up with eventual winner Frank Bradley. Eddie’s 5.23/275.90 lost to Frank's 5.15/268. The team failed to qualify for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, but a 5.09/276.15 qualified #12 at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Unfortunately, Hill lost to Frank Hawley in the opening round. The "Pennzoil" car looked really strong at the NHRA Gatornationals. Eddie qualified #1 with a 4.92/281.69. He beat Jim Head's 5.16/268 in the first round, with a 5.02/271.90, but in round two the car sneezed a blower and lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.07/274. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 4.96/282.66 qualified #4 and an even better 4.94 in round one, beat Jack Ostrander. A late leaving 5.00/277 lost to McClenathan's 5.03/280 in round two. At the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Hill qualified #9 with a 5.08/277.60. In the opening round Gene Snow smoked the tires against him and a 5.70/269.78 advanced. In round two, Hill had more problems getting hooked up and his 5.62/271.73 lost to Joe Amato's 5.05/276. He then made a stop at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.21/273.02. But in the first round, the car went up in smoke and he lost to Robert Reehl. He was back on the NHRA trail for the Springnationals in Columbus. His 5.06/281.33 qualified #3 and he beat Reehl's 5.17/266 in the first round, with a 5.10/274.30. But he continued having trouble getting past the second round of eliminations. This time Prudhomme stopped him with a 5.16/276 to Eddie's 5.18/274.47. They made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where qualifying was not a problem as only thirteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Still, Fuzzy Carter tuned Hill's car to a 5.14/270.83 to qualify #7. In round one, his opponent Snow got out on him and his 5.19/272.72 lost to the "Snowman's" 5.21/273. The NHRA Summernationals saw more of the same. Hill ran 4.98/282.39 to qualify #4 and a first-round 5.08/278.63 beat Ostrander's 5.36/278.1. But as usual, in round two a 5.09/275.73 fell to Prudhomme's 5.01/280. The team had to be frustrated as they still had not reached the semifinals this season. That changed at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Eddie "only" qualified #7 with a 5.25/267.53, but his 5.22/268.81 beat Dick LaHaie’s 5.32/261 in the opening round. A round two 5.17/268.57 beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.27/274, but all good things must come to an end and in the semis, he smoked the tires to a 5.64/258.62 loss to Amato's 5.09/271. It was a step in the right direction. But at the next race, the NHRA California Nationals at Sonoma, Hill had trouble in the first round, and slowed to 6.11/165.47 in a loss to LaHaie’s 5.06/277. Hill qualified #10 at 5.07/282.92. Eddie had one of five cars that ran a "four" in qualifying at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. His 4.99/284.18 got him the #5 spot for the show. He improved to 4.98/284.99 in the first round, over Snow's 5.07/256, but he lost in round two to Gordie Bonin who was driving for Gary Ormsby. |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from Indy 1991 – Cory’s rookie season in Top Fuel. | After winning four times in NHRA national events in Top Alcohol Dragster, Cory McClenathan made his Top Fuel debut at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #10, but in the first round, he broke against Eddie Hill. He also qualified at the NHRA Arizona Nationals where he lasted until round two, where his off-pace 5.34 lost to Craig Smith. A 5.09 qualified #11 at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals and in the opening round, he beat Don Prudhomme, but in round two, his 5.07/259.96 lost to Jim Head's 4.99/273. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Cory qualified #13 and in the opening round, he and Lori Johns had a close race that saw both drivers run 5.11 (Cory at 274.22), but Lori got the win light. His next stop was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational event. This was only an eight-car show and he qualified on the "bump" with a 5.12/275.90. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round, against Dick LaHaie. Things went much better at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He only qualified #12 with a 5.05/281.42, but in round one, he stopped Gary Ormsby with a 5.04. A quick-leaving 5.03/280 in round two beat Eddie Hill's quicker 5.00/277. But in the semifinals, Gene Snow got off the line first against him, and Snow's 5.10 beat McClenathan's 5.08. Still, it was his first trip into the semifinals. After such a great outing, Memphis was a disaster. At the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Cory had a rear tire blow out at speed during qualifying. The damage was severe, as the chassis was cracked and the team was sidelined until the Mile High Nationals. It was quite a blow as Cory qualified for every race leading up to Memphis. Even with the blow out, he had run 5.27/265.40 and would have been the first alternate for the show. After missing three races, the team showed up at Denver with a brand new car. Cory qualified #9 with a 5.29/266.66, but a 5.34/264.08 lost to Tommy Johnson Jr's 5.26/256 in round one. Eventually ran best NHRA national event times of 4.949 at Topeka Fall and 289.66 at the World Finals at Pomona. |

Notes: Marvin's first national event was the NHRA Cajun Nats in Baton Rouge. He was a DNQ (times unavailable). He was at Rockingham on May 6th for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field, and in round one, his 5.95 upset Jeg Coughlin's 6.02. In the semifinal, he slowed to an off-pace 6.47 that lost to eventual winner Bobby Hilton's 6.20 in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car. Marvin then was a DNQ at Columbus (times unavailable) and was the third alternate at Englishtown at 6.19. Martin qualified at the Indy Nationals, where he ran 5.975/245.90 for the fifth qualifying position. Unfortunately, he dropped to a 7.009/121.13 that lost to Clayton Harris's 6.28/225 in round one. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. Photo from the 1979 IHRA Dixie Nationals Atlanta Dragway. |

Notes: Gary debuted the "Thrush Muffler" car in May at the NHRA Division 6 race in Seattle. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.13, and he beat James Warren and Larry Kleinbrook in the first two rounds before losing to eventual winner Herm Petersen's 6.23/234 with an off-pace 7.71/122. He won the Division 1 race at Cayuga, and shortly after that, he won the third Division 3 race at Blaney. The car made its first national event showing at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Gary was having a rough time making the field, as it took five attempts before his 6.23 qualified him #12 for the show. It was a little embarrassing when, in the first round, his 6.65 lost to Graham Light's 6.24. Light was driving Beck's old car. Things didn't go much better at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Beck qualified #12, and in the opening round, his 6.14/227.84 beat John Wiebe's 6.14/234. But in round two, his off-pace 6.66/161.29 was lost to Jeb Allen's 6.13/227. A week later (July 17), he was in Seattle for the first race of the PDA Championships. He didn't reach the final but set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.99/238.09. At the second PDA race run at Fremont on July 24, he failed to reach the finals again, but he had a Top Speed at 243.93. He showed them at the last PDA race held at OCIR. He qualified #3 for the 32 car show with a 6.15 at only 212.76, but it was a long way back from Don Garlits, who qualified #1 with a 5.90/241. A first-round 6.17/218 beat Larry Dixon, and in round two, Gary's 6.16/233 took out Mike Reynolds. In round three, he really stepped it up, running 5.84/241.93 to beat Rob Bruins' 6.11/227. That set up a semifinal meeting with Garlits, who had run 5.82/245 in his third-round race. Beck cut a great light and made this race worth the cost of admission. His 5.89/236.22 beat "Big Daddy's" better 5.83/244. Beck went on to win by beating Ken Moitoza in a smoke-filled final. Gary's final round numbers were 6.43/226.70. He was in Canada the following week (August 8) for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another excellent outing for the team. He qualified #2 with a 6.02/233.76 behind Richard Tharp's 6.02/236 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. It was these two who would meet for the money. Beck started eliminations with a 6.38 over Frank Bradley, and in round two, his 6.14/241.93 beat Tom Kaiser. He got the odd-lot solo in the semifinals and ran 5.96/224.43. Tharp was also putting down some numbers. He had run 6.01, 5.98, and a semifinal 5.97. It was anyone's race in the final, but Beck made his fellow Canadians happy by setting a track record 5.81 at 243.24 (Top Speed) to get the win over Tharp's 6.08/199. Garlits got payback on Beck at the PHR Championships. Don qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field, and Gary's 6.12 got him the #9 spot in the show. This meant that the two ran each other in the first round. Garlits ran 5.88/238 to put the "Thrushmobile's" 6.18/216.86 on the trailer. Beck then went to Beech Bend for the final NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified #1 with a track record 5.90 at 224.43 and in the final Mike Palmer broke so Gary's 5.99/215.82 picked up the win. Notes: Tony started the '93 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #14 with a 4.97/289.29. Another 4.97 at 289.66 in the first round beat Jack Ostrander's quicker 4.93/286. In round two, his consistent 4.99/291.16 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 4.90. At the NHRA Motorcraft Arizona Nationals, Tony ran 4.92/287.53 to qualify #8. Unfortunately, he lost to Jim Head in the first round. The next NHRA event was the Slick 50 Nationals at Houston. Tony ran a career-best 4.86/291.54 to qualify #7. He shut off to an 8.33/96.26 to win his first-round race when Jimmy Nix fouled. In round two, it was he who fouled away a 4.97/289.76 against Scott Kalitta. Pedregon didn't compete at any races after that until the end of June when he showed up at the NHRA Western Nationals. He qualified on the "bump spot" with a 5.12/280.46, but a first-round 5.15/281.33 lost to Scott Kalitta's 4.95/288. The team skipped the NHRA Mile High Nationals but ran the NHRA Autolite Nationals at Sonoma. A 5.05/285.80 qualified #9, but he lost to Tommy Johnson Jr. in the first round. The team then skipped the next two NHRA races but returned for the US Nationals. Unfortunately, Tony's best of 5.09/282.22 was good for the sixth alternate. This was the last NHRA race Tony ran in '93. |

Notes: Vic ran 6.452/218.97 at the Tulsa PRA National Challenge. He qualified #12 at the Ontario Supernationals at 6.252/216.86. In round one, he beat Dennis Baca, 6.64/197.36 to 7.29/190.07. In round two, his excellent 6.040/225.56 defeated a Pat Dakin shutoff. In the semis, he ran 6.034/231.95 to defeat the NHRA's first five-second run on a holeshot. Mike Snively's 5.974/235.69 trailed through the lights on the quickest side-by-side race in history. In the final, Brown fouled away a 6.49/192.30, giving him the best view of Don Moody's unreal 5.91/231.95 all-time best for the win. Some info from Freddie Young. |

Notes: Baca started the season by winning the Fremont New Year's race on January 2. He qualified #1 with a 6.44 and beat a fouling Dwight Hughes in the first round, with a 6.60. He had another easy run in the semis when Flip Schofield fouled, but he beat Gary Ormsby with a 6.43 track record in the final. He didn't do quite as well on January 28 at the Lions Grand Premiere, as a 6.47/229.59 lost to James Warren's 6.44/231 in the first round. Dennis ran well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.51/231.95 (Top Speed). He ran 6.50, followed by an easy single, a 6.56/231.95, and a 6.73 to make the final over, in order, Hank Johnson, Frank Bradley, Don Moody, and Dale Funk. In the final, he smoked the tires to a 7.33/214.79 that finished second best to Carl Olson's 6.74/219. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #3 with a 6.65. Unfortunately, he lost the race against Dwight Salisbury when his motor blew at half-track in the first round. He ran well at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, going all the way to the semifinals before Don Garlits beat him with 6.18/236.22 times. Dennis still ran a 6.4, but it paled compared to Don's run. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Irwindale's NHRA Division 7 Opener with a 6.38 but failed to reach the finals. Dennis ran his best ET of the year at 6.14 at the Last Drag Race, Long Beach, CA, 12/02/72. He ran 6.297/229.59 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge (runner-up to Moody). Also ran 6.175/230.76 at Ontario 1972 and 6.16 at Lions WCS 72, which was half of the quickest side by side run in history (Don Moody 6.13). AKA Carpetbagger. |

Notes: McCord was 14 or 15 in 1972. Was he spending an early inheritance or did he create something that made a bunch of money? | Ormsby ran a best ever (to this point) 6.32/231.95 to beat Jerry Ruth's quicker 6.29/234.37 in the first round, at the NHRA Division 7 final at OCIR on September 17. |

Notes: The 303.71 was the IHRA record at the end of 1997. Placed third in IHRA National Championship Points. | Shirley ran well at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. She qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 4.97/302.08. The speed was a new IHRA record. A first-round 4.99/300.06 beat Jim Bailey's 5.08/276, but she fell off to 5.15/294.18 in the semifinal and lost to Doug Herbert's 5.02/298. Shirley ran one NHRA national event in 1997, the 12th Annual Revell Nationals at Ennis, Texas. She did not qualify with a 4.882/287.35 (third alternate behind Tony Schumacher and Shelly Anderson). |
