Notes: The photo from the 1975 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. | John started his '75 season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the second round before losing to eventual winner Marvin Graham. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran a 6.07 to qualify #13. In the first round, he smoked the tires to a shut off 13.38 that lost to Dave Settles in the "Candies & Hughes" machine. Wiebe qualified #2 with a great 5.97/238.09 at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he lost early. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #14 with a 6.26 and a first-round 6.32/196.07 beat Don Souter's 6.36/226. In the second round, his Donovan engine came to the line ailing and he could only muster a 9.82 that lost to Dale Funk's 6.20. John got a big win in May at Tulsa for the AHRA Southwest Grand American. It was an eight-car show and he won his first-round with a 6.60 over Ronnie Martin. A semifinal 6.49 beat Dale Wilch's Chevy-powered car. In the final, he took the win by running Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.44/230.17 (speed was a track record) that beat Graham's close 6.49/209. John repeated that win at the next AHRA Grand American, the Grandnationals at Dragway 42. He qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.23/217.91. In the first round, he caught Jack Revelle napping and beat him with a 6.70 to Jack's 6.4 run. In the semifinal, Wiebe ran 6.37/228.42 to beat Bill Pryor's 6.39/215. He grabbed the victory with a solo 6.39/231.95 (Top Speed) when Wilch's Chevy broke on the line. Another victory came in early June when he won the NHRA Division 5 race at Thunder Valley, Marion, SD He qualified #5 with a 6.52 forcing him to run the low qualifier, Graham in the first round. John pulled a holeshot and hung on for a 6.75/222.76 win over Marvin's quicker 6.67/219. In the semifinal, he ran a 6.62/211.26 solo when Jack Harris broke. In the final, Bob Struksnes broke a clutch and John went on for the win with a 6.38/216.86. The next AHRA event was the Springnationals at St. Louis International. Wiebe ran 6.30/218.98 to qualify #3. He beat Walt Barbin in the first round, with a 6.19 (Low ET) at 222.78. In the semifinals, however, he smoked the tires and lost to Pryor. He won another NHRA Divisional race at Oklahoma City. John set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.19/234.98 that beat Graham's 6.27/231. In July, AHRA held another Grand American race. It was run at Green Valley. Most AHRA races featured eight-car shows at this time, but at this event, it was a sixteen-car field. John ran well, hitting a 6.20/230.17 while beating Wilch in round two, but in the semifinal, he met up with Graham and the two had a heck of a race. Marvin won the race with Green Valley's first "five," a 5.98/220.04, but while losing, Wiebe shot through the traps with a 6.02/240.00 (track record). On July 13, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where he qualified #9 with a 6.20/231.76. He faced low qualifier Richard Tharp in the first round, and beat him with a 6.41/231.36 when Tharp smoked the tires in the "Carroll Brothers" car. He shut off and lost with problems in round two against Gary Beck. Beck got him again at Bison Dragways in Manitoba for an NHRA Divisional race. This time, it was in the final and Gary's 6.09/218 beat Wiebe's 6.36/210.28. On August 3 John was at Kansas City International for the AHRA Drag Nationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.30/229.00, but he overstaged and fouled against Billy Graham in the semifinals. He hit a little snag later in August when his best of 6.27 failed to qualify for the sixteen-car show at the PHR Championships. He was first alternate. At the "Biggie" of the year, the NHRA US Nationals at Indy, he lost to Rick Ramsey's 5.99/236 in the first round, with a 6.15/237.46. His early season success seemed to be drying up as at the next event, the AHRA World Finals at Spokane had him losing to Chris Karamesines in the first round. He got back into the show on the "break rule", but in the semifinal, his tire-smoking 7.01/136 lost to Marvin Graham's 6.20/217. |

Notes: Mike did not race at the first two NHRA events of the season but was at Houston for the Supernationals. His 5.01/277.69 qualified #8. The supercharger exploded in the opening round of eliminations, and his opponent, Gene Snow, advanced with an ailing 26.46. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #6 with a 5.11/275.48. An off-pace 5.72/231.00 lost to Ken Koretsky's 5.30/230 in the opening round. He did not compete at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.03/275.73 qualified #5. The first round continued to give Mike problems as his 9.40-84.05 fell to Don Prudhomme's troubled 6.88/139. Only 15 cars showed up at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Mike ran a 5.0 to qualify #6. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round and lost to the race's eventual winner, Lori Johns. Baton Rouge saw Brotherton finally advance past the first round. Although his 5.34 only qualified #14 for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he got past a wheelstanding Johns. In round two, he dropped Shirley Muldowney with a 5.26/277. In the semifinal, his 5.32 lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.23. He then made a stop at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. This was an eight-car show, and he ran 5.40/263.01 (Top Speed) to qualify #3. An opening round 5.44/255.27 defeated Tommy Johnson Jr., but he overpowered the track in round two and smoked the tires against Jack Ostrander. Mike went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he ran 5.48/269.86 during qualifying the first weekend (June 10). The race was postponed due to rain, and he chose to race at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals the following weekend instead of racing at Columbus, which was scheduled for the same date (June 17). At St. Louis, he set a track record 5.27 in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field. His speed on the run was 269.84. He then reset the track speed record to 271.19. Mike had an easy path into the final as first Randy Meyer broke against him, and then Ostrander was unable to back up from his burnout when his reverser failed in the semifinal. Mike ran a solo to reach the final. He faced #2 qualifier Richard Holcomb, and the two had a great race that saw Mike's 5.36/264.44 win over Richard's 5.42/257. Times confirmed for 1990 by Jim Hawkins DragStats. Mike duplicated is 282.04 at Ennis Fall. Did Mike also win IHRA Palm Beach? Photo from 1990 Norwalk. |

Notes: Clayton didn't attempt to run any NHRA events in '93 until June when he showed up at the Springnationals. He ran a best of 5.19/278.72 that was good for the second alternate. He did better at the next NHRA race, the Western Nationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.02/278.39. He lost to Rance McDaniel in the first round. At the Mile High Nationals in Denver, he used a 5.15/274.30 to qualify #6. In the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Doug Herbert. He skipped the Autolite Nationals at Sonoma, but was back on the NHRA tour at Seattle for the Northwest Nationals. He qualified #13 with a 5.02/276.75, but he went up in smoke against Kenny Bernstein in the first round. Clayton ran his first ever "Four" at the NHRA US Nationals when he ran a 4.99/288.18 to qualify #13. He met Bernstein again in the first round, and this time he fouled giving Kenny the win. He skipped the Keystone Nationals, but was at Topeka for the NHRA Craftsman Nationals where his best of 5.09/284.62 failed to qualify (third alternate). He had more bad luck when he failed to qualify at the Chief Nationals. Harris was fourth alternate with a 5.01/289.01 best. He ended the season strong, running a 4.93/291.26 to qualify on the "bump" at Pomona for the World Finals. He ran even quicker in the first round, with a 4.92/283.19, but he lost to low qualifier Cory McClenathan's 4.78/300. |

Notes: Amato was the second alternate at the NHRA Winternationals 5.926 246.57. He did better at Gainesville for the Gatornationals, where he ran 5.86/243.24 to qualify #13. An off pace 6.39/165.44 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.02/231. in the opening round. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals held at Atlanta in Mid-April. It featured eight-car pro fields, so Joe really had to step up to qualify. He did, running 5.60/246.57 to qualify #3. But in round one, he smoked the tires and lost to Connie Kalitta. The following week (April 24), he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. A 5.65 qualified him #3 in the field, and he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Tharp. In May, Amato won the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk. There he stopped Jody Smart in the final. At the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.70/250.00 qualified #4 in the eight-car show, but he lost to Gene Snow in the opening round. Joe qualified #3 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, but he lost to Scott Kalitta in round one. He also had a first-round loss at the NHRA Springnationals. After qualifying #11 with a 5.89/243, his 5.83/243.24 lost to Smart's 5.77/250. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. Joe only qualified #4 in the eight-car field, but he beat Scott Kalitta in round one, and in the semifinals, his 5.76/244.56 took out Gary Beck's 5.80/237. He faced Smart in the final, and it was Amato's day as his 5.68/239.36 led wire to wire over Jofy's 5.90/252. The following week (July 10), he was at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Once again, it was an eight-car field, and once again, he qualified #4. He also found himself in the final again too. Amato beat John Davis and Smart to face Richard Tharp in the final. This time Joe had to settle for the runner-up spot. Obviously, things were clicking for the team. They pulled into Englishtown the following week for the NHRA Summernationals. Joe ran 5.69/251.39 to qualify #2 behind Tharp's 5.60/240. Amato took it easy in the opening round, where his 9.73/83.02 advanced when Butch Osmon fouled. Both he and opponent, Scott Kalitta, hazed the tires in the second round, but Joe's 5.93/250.00 hung on to win over Scott's 5.98/231. He next took out Gene Snow's 5.93/196 in the semifinals with a 5.79/248.61. It was a rematch of the Grandnationals final, and the results were the same. Joe ran 5.59 (Low ET) at 250.00 to beat Smart's tire-smoking 6.01/243. Amato did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he did go to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. A 5.77/252.80 (Top Speed) qualified #2 for the eight-car show, and in round one, his even better 5.74/248.61 lost to Scott Kalitta's 5.71/236. |

Notes: Shirley started the year at OCIR in Jan for a best-of-three-match race against Don Garlits and his new "sidewinder" car. She won the first race with a 6.04/218, but in the second race, she shut off to 6.58/136.77 while Don won with a 6.52/215. In the tiebreaker, Muldowney won the match with a 6.25/192. Garlits got some revenge at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He was using his "regular" car and qualified #1 with a 5.85, with Shirley a tenth behind at 5.95. Muldowney ran 6.05 and 6.03 to reach the final to run Garlits for the title. Don had run 5.94 and 5.79 to make the final, so he obviously had a performance advantage. Shirley knew this, and she pushed the "tree too hard and fouled in the final. Another runner-up finish came at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.73/243.24 qualified #3, and she repeated that number in the first round, with a speed of 244.56 to beat John Kimble. In the second round, her 5.76/243.90 took out Jerry Ruth's 6.00/234, and a semifinal 5.87/242.58 beat Jeb Allen. She faced Dick LaHaie in the final. Unfortunately, Shirley lost fire, and LaHaie soloed for the win. Shirley then went to Sacramento for its Winter Classic race, where she set a 5.79 track record. Her speed on the run was 241. A 5.78/245.23 qualified #6 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. She then beat Mark Niver in the opening round. That was followed by a 5.82/242.58 defeat of Jody Smart's 6.01/241 in round two. She then dropped Connie Kalitta in the semifinal with a 5.90/233.76. It was Garlits facing her in the final, and Shirley's 5.82/240.00 easily covered Don's 6.18/231 for the victory. Shirley won the 1982 WINSTON WORLD POINTS CHA/MPIONSHIP, becoming the first person in history to claim drag racing's most prestigious title three times. Low qualifier at Indy with a 5.570. She also met Lucille Lee in the first all-female final round in NHRA history, with Muldowney taking the win, 5.711 seconds at 233.16 mph to Lee's 6.052 at 207.85. Shirley's 5.711 to 5.794 win over Mark Oswald at 1982 Northstars was the quickest side-by-side run in history at that point. The 5.570 to 5.669 over Connie Kalitta at Indy 1982 reset the quickest side-by-side mark. |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. The 4.909 was the low qualifier. After Gwynn's accident at Santa Pod England in early spring of 1990, Frank Hawley stepped up to drive the car at the SpringNationals in Columbus. Not only did Hawley qualify No. 1 with a Low ET of Meet 5.04/275, but he won the event by defeating Joe Amato in the final. |

Notes: Photo from the 1992 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Also ran 4.884 at 1992 Houston Slick 50 Nationals. Did the team run 4.834/294.88 in the IHRA? Best NHRA times were 4.839/290.32 per Jim Hawkins' DragStats. | Mike started the season by qualifying #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 4.90/290.32. He lost in the first round, to Jim Head when both cars had troubles. Jim won with a 7.15. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he again qualified in the top half of the field with a 5.02/282.92 that got him the #6 spot. Once again, he lost to Head in the first round. The next NHRA race was the Supernationals at Houston, where he ran 4.88/290.32 to take the pole. A 4.89/287.17 beat Kim LaHaie's 5.06/268 in the first round, but in round two, he fouled away a 4.91/286 against Kenny Bernstein, who advanced with a 4.90/288. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Mike qualified #5 with a 4.91/290.04. He beat Connie Kalitta in the first round, with a 4.96/284.99 and in round two a 4.91/286.44 took care of Mike Dunn. Crew chief Ken Veney dialed in a little too much power in the semifinals, and Brotherton smoked the tires and lost to a wheelstanding Bernstein at 5.57. It was then on to Rockingham for NHRA's Winston Invitational. Mike qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 5.06/282.39. He improved to a 5.00/285.08 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Don Prudhomme's 4.96/283. The fifth NHRA race of the season was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 4.96/285.39 qualified the "Coors Light" team #5 for the show. Unfortunately, Mike lost to Danielle DePorter in the first round. The team was overdue for a win, and they almost got it at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. A 5.02/285.98 qualified #6, and Brotherton ran 5.06/288.09 over Dick LaHaie's 5.09/279, a 5.02/284 in round two to beat Pat Austin and a 5.00/288.55 took out Bernstein in the semifinals. He met Cory McClenathan in the final, and Mike's 5.02/280.63 finished runner-up to Cory, who got his first-ever NHRA victory with a 4.97/294. His string of qualifying in the top half of the fields ended at the NHRA Springnationals when his best of 5.05/283.46 in qualifying put him in the #9 spot. In the first round, he improved to a 4.97/287.35 to beat Scott Kalitta, but he lost to Joe Amato in round two. It was then off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Mike qualified #7 with a 5.04/282.66. A first-round 5.11/279.58 advanced when Lori Johns fouled, but in the second round, his 5.15/271.24 lost to Prudhomme's 5.09/274. Mike was way back in qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He was #13 with a 5.01/285.62 best and another 5.01 at 285.08 lost to Amato's 4.97/284 in the first round. At Denver, for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, a 5.08/273.05 qualified #7. But he got another first-round loss when Austin pulled a slight holeshot and ran 5.07/276 and beat Mike's quicker 5.05/272.06. Early August saw the NHRA teams at Sonoma for the California Nationals. A 5.03/286.89 qualified Brotherton #9 in the show. He beat Bernstein in the first round, with a 5.00/282.13, but a second-round 5.09/246.64 lost to McClenathan's 5.05/289. |

Notes: Bill qualified #7 with a 7.97/189.86 at Pomona on Jan 9 for the Jackpot Pro Circuit Fuel race. He beat Don Prudhomme in the first round, before losing to Tommy Allen in the semifinals. Another Pro Circuit Fuel race was run at Pomona on January 23. Once again, he qualified with a 7.97, but it was good for the #14 spot this time. He lost early. At Lions on February 26 for the UDRA Winternationals, a 7.90 just made the show in the #32 spot. Once again, he lost early. Bill qualified #5 at a sixteen-car show at Lions with a 7.86 on May 14. In the first round, he improved to a 7.80/196.92, and he ran an even better 7.77/188.28 in the second round but lost to Ken Safford. He was back at Lions on May 28 for another sixteen-car show, and a first-round 7.82/200.00 beat Rick Stewart, but Leavitt's motor blew, and Stewart got back in under the "break rule." He finished runner-up to Allen on June 25 at a Top Fuel show at Carlsbad. Lions held an eight-car show on July 9, and Bill qualified #5 with a 7.63/204.54. He advanced past the first-round when Bob Downey failed to fire in the "Howard Cam Special." He only needed an 8.81/128.36 when Don Hampton shut off with no oil pressure in the semifinals. In the final, he ran an 8.07/166.05 for the runner-up spot to Dave Beebe's 7.47/191. On August 15, Bill was at Carlsbad for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he ran an off pace 8.26/184.42 in the first round, and lost to Allen's 7.60/180. The next day (August 16), he was at Lions for an eight-car show. He had trouble and was unable to run in the first round. On August 26, he was back at Carlsbad, but his bad luck persisted when he broke in the first round. Irwindale held an eight-car show on Dec.10, and 25 cars showed up and attempted to qualify. Bill qualified on the "bump" with a 7.50/205.00. Unfortunately, he fouled against eventual winner Leroy Goldstein in the opening round of competition. |

Notes: Connie was at Lions on April 18 for an eight-car show. His 7.50/176.12 qualified #3. A 7.49/199.66 defeated Larry Faust's 7.92/198 in the opening round, but he fouled away a 7.51/202 in the semifinal that lost to John Mulligan. Swingle ran a 7.38/212.56 to qualify second at Riverside on June 19 for the HRM Championships. He lasted until the third round (32 car field), where John Edmunds' 7.62 beat his quicker 7.46/213.76. |

Notes: Batto was at Sacramento for an eight-car show on June 11. Unfortunately, his very sleepy 7.78/206.42 in the opening round lost to Gary Ormsby's 8.22/187.154" Woody Gilmore chassis-1275-pound car. It turned 7.40s in 1965. Batto previously built and steered the Batto Trucking Crosley AA/Altered. Batto was known as 'The Sultan.' |

Notes: Cook had one of the best top-ending cars in '68. He started his season at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car field, and in round one, his 7.39/213.28 defeated Neil Leffler's 7.53/208 in Joe Winters's car. His 7.33 lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 7.24 in Lou Baney's Ford in round two. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.89/221.12 qualified #1. His 7.30/221.12 won his opening race, but he fouled away a 6.97/223.32 against Dwight Salisbury in the next round. On February 13, Cook was in Las Vegas for the Stardust National Open. A 7.26 qualified #6, but he lost to "Sneaky Pete" Robinson in the opening round. After that, he went to OCIR for its PDA Championships but failed to make it into the later rounds. He won an eight-car show at Lions on April 13. A 7.00/226.12 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. A first-round 7.07/225.00 beat Frank Martinez, and in the semifinal, a 7.08/222.76 beat Dave Beebe. In the final, Don ran a 7.55/220.58 for the win over Ray Ayres. Another win came on May 11 at the Pro-Circuit race at Green Valley. He qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 7.72/214.24. Ron Manke fouled against him in the first round, and Cook advanced with a 7.15/217.90 (Top Speed and a new track record). Bennie Osborn fouled against him in the semifinals, and Don shut off to 8.80/140.95. In the final, he faced Vic Brown driving the "Creitz and Greer" car. Vic had problems and shut off while Cook blew his clutch and slowed to 7.89, but it was enough for the victory. The following day, he was at Tulsa for another Pro-Fuel Circuit race. Thirty-four cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Cook qualified and then beat George Rodriquez in the first round. The "Carroll Brothers" car driven by Gary Bailey lost fire in round two, and Don advanced. He faced Osborn in the semifinals, and Bennie's 7.35 lost to Cook's 7.25. Once again, he faced Brown in the final. This time, Vic beat him for the win. He competed at the AHRA Springnationals at Bristol, where he had a very interesting semifinal race with Brown. Vic had fouled, and Don just had to make an easy pass to reach the final, but he crossed the centerline during his run and was disqualified. Don was at Lakeland for a best two out of three match race against Preston Davis on June 16. The "Southwind" won its first race with a 7.42/229.30 over Preston's 7.54/207 in the "Bo-Weevil." Davis evened the score in the second race with a 7.34/208 solo when Cook could not repair his car in time. Cook proved that the 229 was no fluke by running a 7.27/227 to win the race. We needless to say, the 229.30 was a track record. On August 4, Cook competed at Castle Rock for the High Altitude Nationals. It was a 32-car field, and in the opening round, his 7.25/212.26 beat Otis Campbell. In the second round, his 7.24/210.28 defeated Harold Wilson. The car lost fire for its run against Earl Binns in round three. Shortly after that (August 18), he was at New York National for the AHRA Nationals. Cook showed just what kind of fierce competitor he was there. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the second round, he had his engine blow while winning. In forty minutes, he and his crew pulled the engine out of Leroy Goldstein's "Wienerschnitzel" and installed it in Cook's chassis. He then set Low ET of the meet with a 7.00 while winning his semifinal race. In the final, he went up against Joe Jacono and won, going away with a 7.07/225.00 (Top Speed). |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. | Pat debuted his new McKinney-built car at the NHRA Gatornationals. It replaced his six-year-old Don Long-built car. Although he failed to qualify, the car ran OK for the first time out, hitting a 5.02/285.17 best that was the fourth alternate for the show. He was still having new car blues at the NHRA Southern Nationals and could not qualify, only running a best of 10.67/79.78. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Dakin had Tom Kattleman turning the wrenches, and he qualified #7 with a 4.89/277.43. In the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Pat Austin. |

Notes: Steve was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran a best of 4.959/298.01. Unfortunately, that time was good for the third alternate. He also failed to qualify at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where he was the second alternate at 4.95/296.73. He ran well during the season and recorded his best ET back at Pomona for the World Finals at 4.865. Photo from 1994 US Nationals. |
