Notes: One of the best single runs in drag racing history. 1975 NHRA World Champion. Also ran 249.30 best ever at Martin MI 8-75. The 5.63 was low qualifier at World Finals, 250.69 was inaugural entry in the NHRA 250 mph club for Top Fuel. Garlits ran 5.79, 5.65, 5.67, and 5.74 at Ontario to win.

Notes: Amazing times. Early in the year, ran 7.71, 198.22 at Lions 2-1-66. | Ran 7.73, 195.64 at Bakerfield March Meet 3-66. | Ran 7.30 212 ar Pomona 4-66 beating the Surfers 7.34. | Ran the first generally accepted 7.1-second time with a 7.16 at the AHRA Nationals at Lions in August, and two months later ripped the first six in a match-race at Carlsbad, Calif., with a 6.95. - Drag Racing Online | John ran six of the 20 quickest e.t.s in 1966 and three of the fastest 19 speeds. - NHRA | Runner up AHRA Winternationals Irwindale. | John started the season by winning the Jackpot Circuit race at Carlsbad on Jan 9. He qualified second with a 7.62-199.10. He beat Dick Lechien and Bill Leavitt before running a 7.59-205 in the final to beat Tommy Allen's 7.90-208. On Jan 23 he was at Pomona for its Jackpot race. John qualified fourth with a 7.80-204.08. That wasn't bad considering that there were 34 cars going for the 16 positions. In round two, John lost to Dave Beebe. At the AHRA Winternationals at Irwindale, the team ran well, beating Tom McEwen in the semi-finals but losing an engine while winning. Unfortunately, they were unable to run in the final giving Bob Hightower a single for the win. John's 7.71-198.22 qualified #14 in the 32 car field at Lions for the UDRA Winternationals on Feb 26. He failed to reach the finals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he got out of shape in the first round of eliminations on Sunday against Mike Snively and lost. The team was at Lions for a sixteen car show on March 26 where a 7.89-198.66 qualified #7. He beat Gary Casaday in the first round with a 7.96-196.50 but lost in the next round. Another sixteen car show was run at Irwindale on April 2. Mulligan beat Dwight Salisbury in the first round with a 7.76-199.54 before slowing to a 10.64-91.63 second round loss to Dave Beebe's 7.70-210. Another win came their way on April 17 at Riverside for a Jackpot Circuit event. John qualified first with a 7.67 and he set low ET with a first round 7.61, beating Jack Ewell. In the semi-final, a 7.80 beat Tommy Allen who shut off early. In the final, a holeshot 7.95-205.00 beat Paul Sutherland's quicker 7.83-188. The following day (April 18) found them all Lions for an eight car show. Again John qualified first, this time a low ET of the meet 7.47 at 205.46 got him the spot. Nick Marshall fouled against him in the first round and Connie Swingle did the same in the semi's. John's two runs were 8.05-138.46 and 9.37-106.00 but here he was in another TF final round. Unfortunately, a final round 8.03-146.34 was no match for James Warren's 7.72. John was runner-up at Lions again on April 23 when he fouled away a 7.57-197.80 against Beebe in the final. Mulligan had qualified second with a 7.68-181.08 and had run a 7.85-179.64 over an out of shape Warren and a 8.26-146.10 beat Krohn and Angeleri's Injected Chevy fueler in the semi-finals. It was on April 24 that the drag racing world really started to notice the Adams-Warye-Mulligan team when they were at Pomona for a Jackpot Circuit race. In the first round, John soared to Low ET and top speed with a 7.30-219.50 drilling of Allen. In the second round he faced Chuck Griffith but John's clutch was failing and the car pulled through the beams and fouled. He still ran a 7.43 in the loss. They ran at Beeline's Fuel and Gas Championships on April 30 and even though they beat Glenn Brown in the first round with a 7.66, the speed of 180.36 showed that they hurt their engine and were unable to run in the semi-final. Lions held a sixteen car show on May 14, and a 7.96 qualified in the middle of the field. John shut off early in the first round and his 8.08-142.65 lost to Larry Faust's engine blowing 8.14-182. Since Faust was unable to return, John got back in on the "break rule" but lost again with a ailing 9.58 losing to John Edmunds' 7.92-201. The team traveled to Sacramento on May 22 for the Division Seven points race and qualified with a 7.97 at only 159.50. They failed to reach the finals. John set Lions track records of 7.31-216.34 while qualifying first on May 28 for a sixteen car show. In the first round he beat Ron Goodsell's 7.85-200 with a 7.39-213.76, but Beebe's 7.59-207 beat John's quicker 7.51-204.54 in the second round. John cracked off a low ET 7.24 at 219.50 to lead qualifying at Riverside for the HRM Championships. Unfortunately, he lost to Mike Sorokin in the first round. He did better at Irwindale on July 9 where he set low ET and top speed in qualifying at 7.44-214.00. Another 7.44 at 205.94 beat Allen and a 7.50-206.88 beat Ron Hampshire in the semi-finals. In the final, he met Danny Ongais who lost a clutch on the line and Mulligan won with a 7.53-213.28. Another win came at Carlsbad on May 29 where he qualified first with a 7.49 at a track speed record of 221.12. He ran 7.87-215.30 and low ET of the meet, 7.44 at 218.44 in the rounds leading up to the final where a 7.91-203.16 beat Tommy Allen's 8.27. On August 7, Mulligan ran 7.16 to qualify first at Lions for the AHRA World Championships. A first round 7.31-218.44 (top speed) beat Bob Brooks but in the second round the car failed to fire. Dave Beebe met John at Irwindale on August 20 for a best of three match race. This was big as Dave was winning a lot of races at the time. John won the match two straight with times of 7.49-203.16 over Beebe's 7.68-208 and 7.30-206.88 to Beebe's early shut off 7.76-191.08.

Connie qualified with a 7.51-208.32 at Famoso for the March Meet but lost in round two. He faced off against Bobby Langley for a best two out of three match race at Amarillo on March 27. Connie won all three races with a best of 7.67-205.57. Kalitta ran Bobby Vodnik at Atco on May 1 for a best two out of three match. In the first race he set both ends of the track record with a 7.67-215.30 but he had fouled and Bobby won the first race. In the second race, Kalitta lost a blower and the match when Bobby's 8.05-197 gave him two wins in a row over the Ford. Kalitta bolted on another blower and soloed with a 7.76-208.80. Another big match race was run at Capitol on May 7 against the "Ramchargers" with Don Westerdale driving. Kalitta won the first race with a 7.35 at a track speed record of 221.12. In the second race he fouled away a 7.61-211 letting the "Rams" 7.80-206 have a easy win. In the final deciding race, Don fouled and Kalitta powered through with a 7.49-215.82 for the match race win. The following day (May 8), Connie was at Madison for a match race against Marvin Schwartz. He beat Marvin two straight setting track records of 7.92-200.88 to win the match. Richmond hosted the NASCAR Springnationals on May 30 and Kalitta lost a blower during qualifying and suffered slight burns. He was unable to make eliminations. At the NHRA Springnationals on June 3, a 7.64 qualified him fifth, but he lost to a huge holeshot in round two when his 7.52-200.44 couldn't catch a 7.87. A best of three match race was run at Connecticut on July 17 against Mike Snively in the "Hawaiian." Connie won the first race with a 8.02-187.88 beating Mike's quicker 7.89-197. In the second race, Mike's 7.82-173 beat Connie's 7.99-189.46. In the last race, Snively lost a motor while Kalitta won the match with a track record 7.77 at 194.38. He won the Division Three race at Bluegrass Dragway on July 24 with little opposition. Kalitta faced another tough oppenent in the way of Don Prudhomme for a best of three match at Detroit on July 30.Conrad won the first race with a(play with the clocks)7.16-209.78 but Don's holeshot 7.83-200 beat his quicker 7.53-210 and in the final race,Don again proved why he was such a great driver with another holeshot win,7.75-204 to Connie's much quicker 7.49-208.On Aug 21, at the NASCAR Nationals at Dragway 42, Connie qualified sixteenth with a 7.89 and ran a 7.59 best before Pete Robinson beat him in the Semi-finals. Connie set the Pittsburgh track record at 200.08. At the U.S. Nationals, Connie qualified with a 7.39-209.78 but lost in the second round with a 7.51-215.82 to a holeshot 7.55 by Don Prudhomme. Kalitta had to borrow a chassis to stuff his Cammer into for the NHRA World Finals on Oct 30, since he had wrecked his car in a racing accident. A best of 7.53 and a first round loss to Robinson was the results. - Ron Howard

Notes: Ill Planned Streamliner. Photo from Indy 1987. Gwynn was first under 5.20 at the Ennis All Stars race in April 1987 with a 5.176 at 276.15 mph, then went nuts at the return to Ennis in October: Gwynn's Budweiser dragster qualified with a sizzling 5.13, 281.07, and then rattled off incredible times of 5.12, 281.42. 5.16, 278.29. 5.09, 281.95. and, in the final, a Low E.T., new National Record 5.084 at 280.37 mph to win handily. Times took a precipitous drop in 1987. Gwynn set the national record at 5.220 low qualifying shot at the Gators, then went 5.174 at the All-Stars (no records recorded there), then set the record at 5.204 at Atlanta. At the Chiefs, set the record three times: 5.123, 5.092, and 5.084.
