Notes: Set IHRA National Record at 6.13 in Dallas in October 1972. Photo from the 1972 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Ran 6.74 at Pomona, 6.61 at Gainesville, 6.47 at Columbus, 6.45 at Englishtown, 6.13 at Bristol, 6.569/230.76 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge 72. Ran a DNQ 6.370 at Ontario 72, but got into the show and ran 6.43 in a first-round loss to Pat Dakin’s 6.180. That was his best NHRA ET for the year. Best speed was a nice 231.36 at NHRA Englishtown. Also ran 230.76 at PRA |

Notes: The Warren and Coburn team was at OCIR on January 2 for the Opening All-Pro race. Warren qualified #5 in the eight-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Don Moody. The two had a great race that saw James' 6.54/227.84 get the measure of Don's 6.59/222. Unfortunately, the team hurt some parts, and Moody could replace them on the "break rule." They were at Lions on January 28 for its Grand Premiere race. It was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, James hurt the motor on a 6.44/231.36 pass that beat Dennis Baca's 6.47/229. The team was unable to repair in time for their race against Jeb Allen in round two. The next stop was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Warren qualified #17 for the 32 car field, forcing him to run low qualifier Don Garlits in the opening round. Both had a hard time getting traction, but Warren recovered first, and his 6.95 beat Garlits' 7.26. After taking out the low qualifier, you would think that Warren would have hung around a while in eliminations, but nope, he got dumped by Dwight Salisbury in round two. At the third OCIR All-Pro race, he qualified #2 with a 6.46 behind Clayton Harris' unreal 6.24. A 6.47 in the opening round beat Allen's 6.63, but once again, the car broke and was unable to be fixed in time for round two. Jeb was reinstated. The team was the favorite at their hometown track for the Bakersfield in March. 75 cars attempted to qualify for the 32 car field, and Warren's 6.69 qualified #7. Randy Allison lost fire in the first round, and Warren made an easy pass to advance. He then beat Bob Noice in round two before losing to Salisbury in the third round. Shortly after that, they went to Irwindale for its first Top Fuel show of the year. James set Low ET in qualifying with a 6.64 at 205.94, but he failed to reach the final. James ran and 6.481/197.80 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge. James finished first in Division 7 points, the first of four division points wins. He also ran 6.21 at Irwindale. He also ran at the Last Drag Race, Long Beach CA 12/02/72. James did not set the national event series on fire despite his toughness within the division. He qualified #17 at Pomona at 6.772/220.04 and upset #1 qualifier Don Garlits in round one, 6.95/215.31 to 7.26/223.32. But Dwight Salisbury took him out in round two, 6.64/227 to 6.75/215.31. James' next NHRA national event was the World Finals at Amarillo in October. He qualified #6 at 6.70 (no speed) and defeated Divison 2's Charlie Moulder in round one, 6.55/213 to 6.86/212. The eventual winner (and thus, world champion) Jim Walther took him out in round two, 6.42/225 to 6.56/196. James 6.35 was the ninth alternate at Ontario, a far cry from the eventual 5.90s that it took to win. |

Notes: Jack ran an excellent 4.858/290.32 to qualify #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he ran 4.93/286.80 but lost to a quick-leaving Tony Pedregon at 4.97/289. At the second race of the year, the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #11 with a 4.95/288.18. In the first round, he broke. Jack continued to qualify well at the third NHRA race of the season, the Slick 50 Nationals at Houston, where he ran 4.86/290.79 to qualify #6. He out-qualified the likes of Kenny Bernstein, Joe Amato, and Eddie Hill. But in the first round, he overpowered the track, smoked the tires, and lost to Mike Dunn's 4.90/287.At Gainesville,he had all kinds of problems when a frame rail broke in qualifying. The car broke in two and was totaled but he was ok.A earlier pass of 4.92/268.89 had qualified him in the #12 spot but he obviously was unable to run in eliminations.By April,he showed up at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he ended up as the sixth alternate at 5.19/251.67.Things went better at Memphis where Jack's 5.06/273.22 qualified on the "bump". In the first round his 5.14/272.64 fell to low qualifier,Scott Kalitta's 4.98/282. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. |

Notes: I don't think this car ran that quick in 77? It still had cast-iron heads. I have magazine pic with caption that refers to this as a 6.20 race car. It was the addition of Don Garlits modified aluminum heads in 78 that really picked up the performance. Tim Simplot |

Notes: NHRA Champ 1978. Ran 5.93/240 in eliminations at Indy 1978. Qualified number two at Pomona 78 at 5.871/238.72. Kelly Brown was in the right place at the right time in '78. He was driving Jim Brissette's Donovan-powered car, and the Donovan engine was making a comeback. At the NHRA Winternationals, the top three qualifiers were running Donovans, and Kelly's one-shot qualifier of 5.87/238.72 put him in the #2 spot behind Don Garlits' 5.77. Brown's opening round effort of 5.94/235 beat Jeb Allen's 6.06/236 and a 6.06/239 in round two-beat Shirley Muldowney's 6.13/236. He picked up to 5.88/237 in the semifinals to turn back Rick Ramsey's 6.25/219. His final round opposition was unheralded Gordon Fabeck. Kelly scored the victory with a 6.12/226 over Fabeck's 6.48/217. At Bakersfield's last 32 car Top Fuel field, Kelly's 6.10 qualified #15. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. The team's next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, he and Garlits took the top two spots in qualifying. This time Brown's 6.00 (Low ET) at 235.60 led the field. These two would work their way into the final. In the first round, Kelly ran another 6.00/240 to take out Dick LaHaie's 6.30/221. Yet another 6.00/224 in round two beat Richard Tharp's tire-smoking 7.41 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He slowed (?) to a 6.06/238 in a thumping of Marvin Graham's 6.32/236 in the semifinals, and he looked like a sure bet to get his second NHRA win in a row. Garlits had only run a best of 6.16 in eliminations. However, bad luck set in as Brown lost a motor just off the line, and he had to watch as Garlits smoked the tires to 6.55 for the victory. Brown didn't have to wait long before winning again. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals in April, he beat Mike Tarter in the final with a 6.11/235.68 over Mike's 6.28/234. Earlier, he almost matched Tharp's 6.04 Low ET of the meet with a 6.05 run in the semifinals over Johnny Abbott. On May 7, he won the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Seattle. A 6.00/244.56 qualified #2 in the eight-car field. He beat Rob Bruins in round one, with a 6.03/232.55 to Rob's 6.06/236. In the semifinals, his 5.93/236.84 (Low ET) beat Fabeck's 6.03/240, and in the final, his holeshot 6.26/211.76 beat Graham Light's quicker 6.15/238. The following week, he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race. He was late in arriving after towing from his win in Seattle. The team was lacking parts for their Donovan, and they were forced to make things do. After they showed up, Kelly cracked off a 5.97/236.22 to qualify low for the sixteen-car field. In the first round, the car lost fire on the line, and after he got it restarted, he had to run without the benefit of a burnout. He beat Stan Shiroma's 6.39/216 in with a 6.21/200.00. In round two, the same thing happened; he lost fire, restarted it, and ran without the burnout. This time his 6.39/179.64 lost to Rick Ramsey's 6.01/230. His winning ways continued at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. But his transporter let him down on the way to National Trail, and he got there just before tech closed. After two failed attempts to qualify, a last-ditch effort of 5.96/236.84 qualified him #5 in the show. After that, it was smooth sailing. A 6.10/233.76 beat Muldowney's 6.15/238 and a 6.12/233.16 in round two beat Light's 6.34/206. A consistent 6.11/234.37 in the semifinals turned back Tharp's 6.14/241 and put him into the final against Frank Bradley. The two had a great race, but Brown showed that he could cut a light as his 6.09/238.72 beat Frank's 6.05/238 for his third NHRA National event win of '78. Things did not go so well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He only qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.15, and he lost to Paul Longenecker in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he scored yet another win. It was an eight-car show, and seventeen cars attempted to qualify. Brown was on the "bump" with his 6.01. But during eliminations, he picked up. A first-round 5.91/233.16 beat Garlits' 6.16/222, and a semifinal 5.97/230.17 stopped Light's 6.19/225. He faced Abbott in the final, and an off-pace 6.31/220.58 was enough to win Abbott's equally troubled 6.40/213. Before the NHRA US Nationals, Kelly went to the Car Craft Magazine Awards show, awarded "Person of the Year." Did Kelly run 5.809 somewhere this year? We formerly listed that, but he did not run it in NHRA competition. |

Notes: In 1978, we were runner-up to Don Garlits at the PHR in Martin, Michigan, running consistent high 5's. We finished in the top 10 of all three sanctioning bodies in 1978: AHRA, IHRA & NHRA. Made it to the semis at Indy 1978, losing to Garlits with an eliminations best of 5.91/242. Qualified fourth at 78 Winters at 5.951/238.09. |

Notes: Rupp and Dakin were always competitive with their Donovan-powered cars. When the Donovans were running well in T/F, they were there, but when the other Donovan-powered teams faltered, they stood by the 417. In '77, the motor was on the upswing as even "Big Daddy" Don Garlits had one. The team did not run any IHRA or AHRA events this season. Unfortunately, at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, Garlits qualified his #2, while Dakin failed to make the show. Things went much better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Pat qualified #8 in the field with a 6.11. An opening round 6.33/215 beat Frank Bradley, while a second round 6.06 put Grant Stoms on the trailer. Clayton Harris broke on the line in the semifinals, and Dakin advanced into the final with a 6.21/223. He faced Garlits for the title (Garlits was using his old car with a KB since the 417 wouldn't fit in that chassis), but Don's 6.00 was too much for Dakin, and he finished runner-up with a 6.33. The team was at Edgewater in May for the NHRA Division 3 race, where a 6.14/204.54 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. Dakin failed to reach the final. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Cajun Nationals, and it was postponed by rain until June 4. The Rupp and Dakin team did well there, beating Gary Beck in the first round with a 6.20/231.36 before fouling against eventual winner Richard Tharp in the Candies and Hughes car in the semifinals. The following week (June 12), Dakin was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.02/227.84 qualified #4, and in the first round, he won a close decision over Jeb Allen. Both ran 6.20 (Dakin at 227.27). In the second round, the car slowed to 6.56/169.49 in a loss to Johnny Abbott's 6.14/220. The third NHRA Division 3 race was held at US 131. Pat qualified #3 with a 6.15/223.32. A 6.32 put away Dick LaHaie in the opening round, but in the semifinals, he had trouble and slowed to 6.91 in a loss to Shirley Muldowney's Low ET of the meet shot of 6.04. He was the quickest Donovan campaigner at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #5 with a 5.97/233.09. A motor-blowing 6.03 in the first round stopped Bradley, and a new engine was put in for round two. It ran well, chalking up a 6.15, just not well enough, as Shirley's 6.05 in the other lane got the win. Pat won the fourth NHRA Division 3 race at Byron Dragway. He set Low ET at 6.21, and in the final, Paul Romine fouled, and Pat eased to a 12.79/60 mph run for the victory. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals in early August. Once again, he was the quicker Donovan campaigner, running 6.16 to qualify #4 in the eight-car field. In the opening round, he beat fellow Donovan campaigner Tony Ceraolo with a 6.29, and a semifinal 6.10 beat Canadian Gary Beck's 6.17 to upset the fans. In the final, he faced the Pink car of Muldowney. Once again, she stopped him, her 5.95/234 winning while Dakin slowed to a 7.14/137 loss. It was still a strong showing for the team. The NHRA Division 3 final was held at Beech Bend on August 21. Dakin went into the race battling Jeg Coughlin for the Division 3 crown. But bad luck set in - a crankshaft broke during a qualifying pass (6.45/159.85), and the team couldn't run in eliminations. Pat lost the title by just 22 points. Then came the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis. Dakin did not have the strongest Donovan there. His 6.11 only qualified #23 in the 32-car field. In the first round, his 6.18/218 was beaten by Hank Johnson's 6.10/234. The following week (September 11), he was at Union Grove for the PRO National Challenge race, where he again lost in the first round. This time Ron Correnti got him. Notes: Note the similar paint scheme to Muldowney for that year. Kalitta showed up at Edgewater for the Division 3 race in May. Only four cars showed for what was supposed to be an eight-car show. In the opening round, his 6.37/224.43 fell to eventual winner Bill Pryor's 6.11/227. While he didn't win or even make the finals, he was happy to be back behind the wheel. It didn't take long to win either, as he won the opening UDRA Circuit race held in Milan, Michigan. At Union Grove's Drag Racing Olympics, he didn't run on Saturday but was there on Sunday, where he did quite well. Kalitta had the lowest ET in the qualifying round with a 6.04, and he showed that he was consistent with a 6.05/244.56, beating Marvin Graham's 6.23/221 in the semifinal. Connie faced the "Old Man," Don Garlits in the final, and they had a great race with Don "schooling" Kalitta by getting out first and winning with a 6.10/238 over Kalitta's slightly quicker 6.09/241.28. He was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals on June 11, where he qualified #8 with a 6.02/243.90. In the first round, he ran 6.25/233.16 to beat a tire shaking Graham at 6.39/215. In round two, he ran another 6.25/233.16, but he lost to Frank Bradley's 6.26/225. Conrad won the Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan, on June 24. It was a surprising victory considering that he qualified only eighth in the eight-car show with a 6.42. But he picked it up n the first-round with a 6.23/233.16, beating Dick LaHaie's 6.22/222. Garlits fouled against him in the semifinals, and Kalitta ran an easy 6.79/163.33 for the win. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.06/243.24 in beating Jeg Coughlin in the final. Since he had been running so well, it was surprising that he failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 6.32 best was far from the 6.15 "bump." The following week, he also failed to qualify for the eight-car show at the IHRA Northern Nationals. He did not race at the NHRA Grandnationals but was back at Martin, Michigan, on August 13 for the PHR Championships. His 6.20 qualified #13 and an off-pace 6.43/233.72 in the opening round lost to Pryor's 6.12/222. Of course, with Kalitta and Shirley Muldowney's recent breakup, everyone wanted the two for match race competition. The two got together for a best of three match at Detroit Dragway. Chalk one up for Shirley. Connie won the first race with a 6.09/231.95 over her 6.18/229. He blew a head gasket and could not run the second race, so she soloed for the win. In their final race for the glory, Shirley's 6.08/233 beat his 6.13/225.56. He qualified #10 at Indy in the 32 car field for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.02/242.58. Paul Romine lost to his 6.07 in the first round. In round two, the spectators got what they wanted, where Kalitta was paired up against Muldowney. Once again, she got the upper hand as her 5.97/240 beat his 6.01/234.98. Seattle was his next stop for the NHRA Fallnationals. A 6.11/231.95 qualified #8. In round one, he improved to 6.07/235.60 to take out Mike Palmer. Connie ran another 6.07 at 237.46 in round two, but it wasn't enough to beat Rob Bruins' 6.03/240. Connie's best NHRA times were the 6.010 in eliminations at Indy and the 243.90 from Columbus. | The Newport 'News last published in the Summer of '78, including a re-licensing report from Detroit Dragway: "Kalitta runs 6.00, 199." - Joe Moore |

Notes: 19-year-old top fuel driver. Qualified 15th at Gainesville 1992. | DePorter's best of 5.17/237.40 failed to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals. She was the fifth alternate. She also failed to make the field at the Arizona Nationals with a 5.23 best that was good for the third alternate. A 5.20 at the Supernationals also failed to qualify (fourth alternate), but Danielle made her first NHRA race when she made the show at the Gatornationals with a 5.06/283.10 for the bump spot. She also ran her first-ever "four" in the first round, with a 4.98/277.77 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 4.88/298. |

Notes: Ran 6.70 Track record at Lions, 6.75 at Carlsbad. | Cochran was one of fifteen cars that attempted to qualify at an eight-car show at Lions on April 12. He qualified #1 with a 6.70/225.56 that tied the track ET record held by John Mulligan. His 6.89/189.47 beat Gerry Glenn's 6.96/222 in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car in round one. Unfortunately, his rear end blew in the semifinals, and he slowed to 8.17/100.39, which lost to Tom McEwen's 6.87/217. He was back at Lions on April 19 for another eight-car show. He qualified #5 with a 6.81. In the first round, he picked up to a 6.75/216.86 beat Ron Manke's 6.78. A semifinal 6.90/222.22 beat Tommy Allen's off-pace 7.27/197. In the final, he was up against Rick Stewart driving for Bill Crossley. Gary got the victory with a 6.84 over Rick's 7.06. He took another win at an eight-car show at Irwindale on May 3. There he got around a fouling Glenn Woosley in the first round, while in the semifinals, he advanced when Manke was disqualified for running over the lights. In the final, he got his third easy win in a row when James Warren fouled against him, and he ran 18.81 to take the win. He was back at Lions on May 10 for another eight-car show. A 6.78 qualified #6 in the field. Bob Williams fouled against him in the first round, and Cochran advanced with a 6.79/217.39. A 6.93/205.47 in the semifinals lost to Manke's 6.96/198. OCIR held a big sixteen-car show on May 17, and Cochran made it into the final there too. In the first round, both he and his opponent Dave McKenzie smoked the tires, but Gary's 7.31/218.44 came out on top. In round two, his 7.16/226.13 (Top Speed) advanced over Wayne King. In the semis, his 7.24/225.00 beat Joe Lee. This put him in the final with Kelly Brown in Lou Baney's Ford-powered car. The race never came off as Cochran lost oil pressure and shut off on the line giving Kelly a solo for the win. Irwindale hosted the NHRA Division 7 race on May 24. Cochran qualified, but in the first round, his 7.35 lost to Hank Westmoreland's 7.20. Gary qualified #5 at the big 32-car PDA Championships at OCIR on July 19 with a 6.87. He picked up to a second-round 6.76 over Butch Maas, and in round three, he set Top Speed at 225.56 while beating John Mulligan. In the semifinals, he lost to Larry Dixon. Cochran was at Lions for an eight-car show on July 26, but a first-round 6.97/218.97 lost to Warren's 6.78/226. |

Notes: Going back through my scrapbook stuff, it has me driving Carl Casper's "Young American" to a track record 6.56 at 224.43 at OCIR on January 24/1971. That was the second consecutive week that Garlits lost in the final round in his new rear-engined creation. first week was at Lions at the Grand American. TC said he was extremely pissed. Ya think? <g> — Gary Cochran | Carl Casper's original Young American FED sits in the Kruse Museum (Rick Howard photo), Auburn, Indiana (as of 2010). | Gary was at OCIR for the second All-Pro race on January 24. There were 34 cars attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. Gary qualified easily enough and in the first round, his 6.59/214.79 beat James Warren's 6.76/216. In the semifinals, he set a new track record 6.56 at 224.43 that beat Jim Paoli. The 6.59 was within the 2% for a back up. Ironically, Paoli had set Low ET with a 6.55 in the first round, but he was unable to back it up. Cochran faced Don Garlits new rear-engine car in the final and another 6.59/223.88 gave him the victory over Don's 6.62/223. He got another win with this car when he won the third OCIR All-Pro race on February13. In the opening round his 6.60/225.00 beat John Wiebe's 6.65/232. In the semifinals, Dwight Salisbury shut off and Gary's 6.83/198.67 advanced. His final round opponent was Don Moody and Cochran's 6.61/229 beat Moody's 6.70/226. He then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32 car field and Gary qualified with a 7.10. He picked up to 6.83/213.76 in the first round, over Marvin Schwartz and an 8.09/109.89 advanced in round two when Fred Farndon fouled. He got another easy run in round thee when Dave Russell failed to fire and a 7.09 advanced. His competition continued to have trouble when in the semifinals, Don Ewald lost a clutch. Cochran kept his foot in it this time and ran 6.79/207.36. He faced Chris Karamesines for the money and the "Greek" was running well. He had run a best of 6.68 in eliminations and in his semifinal ran he ran 6.75/211. But in the final Chris had problems and shut off to 7.29/137 while Cochran picked up the win with a 6.74/218.96. Early in March he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified with a 6.91, but a 6.87/218 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Don Garlits' 6.72/217. |

Notes: All three guys were full partners. Ron and Jeep are brothers. Hampshire was one of nearly 90 Top Fuel drivers that showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 6.85 qualified #7 in the 32 car field. He improved to 6.74/224 in the first round to advance. Ron lasted until round three before losing to eventual winner Larry Dixon. The number of cars that showed for these Top Fuel fields was nothing short of amazing. Fremont held its Northern Nationals of February 15, and 66 showed for the sixteen-car field. Ron qualified and ran an easy 7.30 when Tom Larkin broke a transmission in the first round. A great light coupled with a 6.84 beat Tommy Ivo's better 6.80 in round two. Don Prudhomme fouled away Low ET of the meet in the semifinal with his 6.52 losing to Hampshire's 8.26. Ron faced Steve Carbone in the final, and Steve's 6.67/225 got the victory over Ron's 6.98/223.32 runner-up effort. The following week (February 22), he was at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. He set Low ET and Top Speed during qualifying with a 6.69/229.00. But he was upset in the first round, where Tony Nancy's 6.74/218 beat his 6.77/229.00 (again!). Of course, many cars showed up at Bakersfield for the March Meet. Seventy-five cars attempted to qualify for the 32 car field. Hampshire's 6.94 qualified #11. He improved to 6.91/223 to win his opening round race, but an off-pace 8.22/187.00 in round two lost to Harry Hibler's 6.95/191. The second annual San Francisco National Open was held at Sears Point on March 15. Ron qualified #4 for the sixteen-car field. He shut down to 7.28 in a first-round loss to Bill Dunlap. The final OCIR All-Pro race was run near the end of March. Unlike the first three events, this one featured a sixteen-car field. Ron qualified, and then his 6.81 in the opening round beat Bob Murray's 6.98. Bob Hightower shut off against him in round two, and Ron advanced with a 7.43/167.59. Unfortunately, he fouled against Jim Dunn in the semifinal. His next stop was at Irwindale on April 11 for an eight-car show. His 6.90 qualified second to Ron Manke's 6.88. Another 6.90/225 advanced over a fouling Nancy in the opening round. But in the semifinal, he shut off to a 7.81/137.40 loss to eventual winner Dunn at 6.88/214. |

Notes: Wayne was at Lions on June 22 for an eight-car show. He qualified on the pole with a 7.25/208.32. In the first round, he beat Joe Lee's 7.38/211 with a 7.20/211.76. King advanced when Bill Alexander's car caught fire on the line in the semifinals and was shut off. In the final, he raced John Mitchell in the "Red Mountain Boys" car. John had earlier set Low ET and Top Speed, so it was a good race. Wayne won the race with a final round 7.36 that just nipped Mitchell's 7.37. Tony Waters and King were back at Lions a week later (June 29) for another eight-car show. This time they qualified #4 with a 7.19, and Wayne was a bit off in the first round, when his 7.58/217.38 lost to Alexander's 7.74/213. OCIR held its Nitro Championships on July 6, and Wayne qualified #10 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, an off-pace 7.77/156.79 lost to Kenny Safford's 7.29/207 in Ted Gotelli's car. The following weekend (July 14), the team was at San Fernando, where only four cars showed up to race. Wayne ran 7.53/180.26 to advance to the final, where he met Larry Dixon driving Bill Martin's car. King got the win, running 7.47/221.12 over Dixon's 7.62/193. At Lions on July 20 for the PDA Meet, Wayne failed to qualify for the top sixteen, but with 64 cars, they held four sixteen-car shows! He qualified #2 in the second sixteen with a run of 7.05/219.50. A first-round 7.07/215.86 advanced, but in round two, the car developed problems and slowed to 8.85, which lost to Ron Rolstad's 7.21/183. Wayne raced one NHRA national event, the Indy Nationals, where he qualified #27 with a 7.012/218.44. He beat a shutting-off Jim Dunn in round one, with a 7.03/226.70. Wayne improved further in round two, hitting a 6.089/229.00, but lost to Chuck Kurzawa's 6.87/223. |

Notes: Tom started the year with a big win on January 31 at the AHRA Winternats, winning TF. He qualified ninth with a 7.72 and ran a first-round 7.78/193.96 over Chris Karamesines. In the second round, he ran 7.87/193.12 over James Warren's wheelstanding Chevy-powered car. In the semifinal, a 7.76/196.92 beat Danny Ongais.
