Notes: Sport's first 300 mph run to become the first member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club. Runner up to Eddie Hill in the final of the 1992 Gatornationals. Ran 4.823 low qualifier at the Gators. Set 4.846 national record at 92 Supernationals. Chiefs 4.792 was low qualifier. Low qualifier at Houston at 4.859 and Keystones at 4.879. Also 293.63 and 296.93 at 92 Houston, and 295.66 at 92 Maple Grove. | Kenny started his '92 season at the NHRA Winternationals, qualifying #11 with a 5.04/285.98. A first-round 5.91/281.86 beat Gene Snow and a 5.01/280.54 beat Jack Ostrander in round two. In the semifinal, his 4.98/282.39 beat a quicker and faster Joe Amato at 4.95/283. In the final, a 4.96/281.07 beat Jim Head's 4.98/279. At the next race, the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Kenny just made the show, qualifying #15 with a 5.15. A first-round 5.07/276.24 lost to Pat Austin's 4.99/287. As mentioned above, he set a 4.84 NHRA record at the NHRA Supernationals. He qualified #8 with a 4.94 and made it into the final against Amato. Amato won with a 4.91/292 to Bernstein's troubled 7.19/117.11. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #1 with a 4.82 at the sport's first 300 mph run, a 301.70. He backed it up for a new NHRA speed record. In the actual race, he ran a first-round 4.88/298.30 over Dannielle Deporter and a second round 4.87/299.30 over Tommy Johnson Jr. In the semifinal, he ran a wheelstanding 5.57/263.46 over a tire smoking Mike Brotherton. In the final, Eddie Hill's 4.84/290 beat Kenny's shutting off 9.43/86.40. At the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham in April, Bernstein qualified #3 with a 5.01/288.64 (Top Speed), but he lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.46 in the first round, with an off pace 5.78. The next NHRA stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Kenny qualified #1 with a track record 4.85/296.15. He beat Austin's 5.00/284 in the first round, with a 4.93/298.50 (Top Speed), in round two his 5.01/294.69 lost to McCulloch's 4.98/285. The sixth race of the NHRA schedule was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. A 4.98/293.82 qualified second. He lucked out in the first round, when both he and Johnson Jr. smoked the tires. Bernstein's 5.54/257.43 came out on top. In round, he got some revenge on McCulloch who had stopped him at the last two events by running a 4.96/295.85 (Top Speed) over Ed's 5.11/281. In the semifinals, Brotherton's 5.00/288 beat a tire smoking Bernstein. Things didn't go to well for the Budweiser Team at the Springnationals. First they qualified way down in the #7 spot with a 5.05/287.72. Then in the first round, another 5.05 at 289.76 lost to Austin's 4.96/289. They more than made up for it by winning the next NHRA race, the Grandnationals in Canada. Kenny qualified #4 with a 5.01/284.99. A first-round 5.07/288.64 beat Robert Reehl and in the second round, a 5.06/287.90 advanced when McCulloch broke. In the semifinals, he faced Al Segrini in Billy Lynch's car and once again his competition broke and he advanced with a 4.98/290.88. In the final he was up against Don Prudhomme. His 5.03/292.58 (Top Speed) beat the "Snake's" close 5.06/271. The next race was the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown. Kenny was still the only driver that had ran 300 mph and he did it again here when he ran 4.88/300.40 to qualify #2 behind McCulloch. Unfortunately, in the first round, Dale Armstrong dialed too much power into it and Kenny smoked the tires and lost to Ostrander. Things went much better at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Once again Kenny qualified #2 behind McCulloch with a 4.93/284.53. He ran a 5.11/276.32 over Junior Kaiser's 5.38/247 in the first round, only a 12.26/75.34 was needed to advance past round two after Hill couldn't return after blowing a motor in his first-round race. In the semifinals, Bernstein's 5.15/275.56 beat Doug Herbert's 5.32/258. In the final he met up with McCulloch. What promised to be a good race was ruined when Ed smoked his tires and Kenny ran 5.16/268.57 for his third win of the year. The NHRA tour then went to Sonoma for the California Nationals. Kenny qualified #8 with a 5.01/290.41. A first-round 5.07/286.80 lost to Mike Brotherton's 5.00/282.

Notes: Gary debuted this streamlined car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The first time out, the blower exploded and messed up the bodywork. His 6.47/152.54 obviously failed to qualify. His 5.65/263.62 at Gainesville qualified #14 for the NHRA Gatornationals. In the opening round, Ormsby's 5.69/215.31 fell to Connie Kalitta's 5.50/257. Heavy streamliner body. The concept was sound, but horsepower couldn't match the weight. Used the 1985 chassis. Mag grounded to the carbon fiber body, causing an explosion at the first race. Gary had best times of 5.445/263.77 at the Summernats, 5.455/262.85 (Low ET) at Columbus, and 5.455/265.48 at Ennis. Gary qualified #13 at the World Finals at 5.639/257.80. He won the first round in an upset of Hank Endres but lost in round two to Joe Amato.

Notes: Eleventh member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club on October 3/1993, with a 302.41 at Topeka, Kan. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Set national record at 4.784 (low qualifier) at 93 Winternationals. Low qualifier at 4.789 at 93 Topeka Fall. Ran 4.782 at World Finals. | Cory had a great season in '93. Although things didn't look so well at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January Cory and crew chief, Jimmy Prock had their new Brad Hadman built car there, but were never able to get in a full run. He made two easy check-out passes with a 7.13/80.19 best, but the next three runs he made had the car either smoke the tires or go into hard tire shake. The good news was, of all the Top Fuel cars there, McClenathan had the best 60 foot times at .88. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with a 4.78/296.93. The ET was a new NHRA record, and he went on to beat Shelly Anderson in the first round, with a 4.82/295.17. Another strong run of 4.85/292.30 was run in round two against Tommy Johnson Jr., but it was wasted with a red light. He qualified on the pole for the next NHRA race as well, the Motorcraft Nationals where he ran 4.82/297.71 to get the spot. McClenathan beat Bobby Baldwin in the first round, with a 4.95/293.35, but once again he fouled in round two giving Jim Head an easy 6.78/219 run into the semifinals. At the Slick 50 Nationals at Houston, everyone was running career-best times while Prock was having trouble getting Cory down the track. He eventually made the field with a 4.95/287.71 that held for the "bump spot." In round one he faced low qualifier Ed McCulloch and Cory fouled. After fouling in three straight races Cory was determined not to do it again at the Gatornationals so after going out and qualifying #1 with a 4.78 (Low ET) at 291.73, he beat Mike Brotherton in the first round, with a 4.90/291.73. In round two he faced Mike Dunn in Darrell Gwynn's car and while he didn't foul, Prock put too much power into it, and he smoked the tires and lost. It was either on the pole or on the "bump spot" for the team as at the Winston Invitational they qualified on the "bump" in the eight-car field with a 4.97/287.17. Unfortunately, on that qualifier, he crashed at the top end totaling the car and Cory received third degree burns on his forehead and second degree burns to his hands. Obviously, the team was unable to make the Southern Nationals at Atlanta, but they were back and ready at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. Cory qualified #6 with a 4.96/294.98. An off pace 5.36/280.89 beat Anderson in round one, and in round two, his 4.93/294.40 beat Johnson Jr's 4.95/291. In the semifinals, he faced Joe Amato, and he smoked the tires and lost. The Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown was NHRA's next stop. Cory qualified #5 with a 4.83/292.77.

Notes: On January 17, John dominated an eight-car show at Fremont. Twenty cars showed, and Batto qualified #1 with a 7.94. He improved to a 7.87/189.96 in the first round, and in the semifinals, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.71/194.38 while beating Denny Miliani's 8.04 in Ted Gotelli's car. His 7.76/188.66 beat Denny Forsberg for the victory in the final. It should be mentioned that he was the only driver to run in the sevens at the meet. Batto was back at Fremont at the end of June, where he won again while setting Low ET and Top Speed at 7.53/200.44. The car featured a 154" Woody Gilmore chassis at 1275 pounds. It held AA/FD records at Fremont and Half Moon Bay. Feature in 12/65 Drag Racing claimed two consecutive 7.40 runs at Fremont. Batto previously built and steered the Batto Trucking Crosley AA/Altered. RH Batto lost in the first round at the AHRA Winternationals to Connie Kalitta. - Danny White

Notes: Blaine set Low ET in qualifying low at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 4.66/309.15 led the field. He smoked the tires in the first round against Robert Reehl, but Reehl was having the same problem, and his 8.09/190 lost to Blaine's 6.54/200.57. After that, he could do no wrong. He set Top Speed in round two, where his 4.80/310.20 dropped Mike Dunn's 5.05/229. He then ran 4.74/303.54 in the semi-final to defeat Larry Dixon Jr's 4.79/295. In the final, he faced the old pro, Connie Kalitta, and Johnson's 4.73/299.70 got the victory over Kalitta's 4.82/297. He then went to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where he qualified #1 once again with a 4.68/303.54. Reehl failed to show in the opening round for his race against him, and Blaine ran a 4.79/296.63 solo to advance. But he slowed to 4.91/242.13 in round two and lost to Scott Kalitta's 4.79/305. His team continued to show power at Gainesville, where a 4.72/303.54 qualified #1 for the NHRA Gatornationals. He brought home another win by stopping Pat Dakin's 4.93/299 in the opening round with a 4.81/297.52. In round two, a 4.74/304.77 beat Joe Amato, while a semi-final 4.73/305.60 beat Connie Kalitta's 4.86/291. In the final, he faced Connie's son, Scott, and the two had a drama-filled race as Scott had a blow over while Blaine slowed the tires. A 10.40-81.34 is all Johnson needed for the win. He didn't quite get the pole at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. His 4.71/303.03 qualified second to Scott's similar 4.71/313. But Blaine had Low ET of the first round, where his 4.73/293.44 took out Bruce Sarver's 5.37. In round two, his 4.85/289 lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 4.70/305. It was interesting; in the first four races of the year, Johnson and Bernstein had each won two. The NHRA Winston Invitational was held at Rockingham in the middle of April. This was only an eight-car field, and Blaine's 4.69/299.90 qualified #1. A 4.76/295.17 in the first round beat Mike Smith's 5.02/246, and in the semi-final, he ran 4.79/291.63 to drop Bernstein's 4.83/291. It was another final between himself and Dixon, and once again, Johnson took the win with a 4.77/297.32 over Larry's 4.84/285. On his way to the world championship when he crashed and died in Indianapolis. RIP, Blaine. The Topeka 4.592/313.15 was the low qualifier and Blaine's best times of the year.

Notes: NHRA says that this was the fastest speed of 1969. We had Garlits at 240, but that was likely a match race or AHRA time. We need to verify all and determine the facts. Ran 7.13 Riverside Hot Rod Magazine Championship and 6.80 at Dallas International Motor Speedway in 69. | James Warren and Roger Coburn didn't have one of their best seasons in '69, but it definitely wasn't one of their worst. If John Mulligan didn't claim Top Speed, this team probably did. James didn't make it very far in eliminations at the AHRA Winternationals, but he did set Top Speed at 221.67. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran a winning 7.19/205.47 in the first round, but in round two, a 7.14/214.49 lost to Mulligan's 6.86/222. The Warren and Coburn team failed to make the show at the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9. That was a tough field to make with 35 cars trying for the eight open positions so they towed over to Lions for an eight-car show. They set Top Speed in qualifying #2 with a 7.06/222.22. In the first round, James raced eventual winner Carl Olson and lost when his blower belt broke. It was a close race until it broke with Olson's 7.25/219 beating his 7.33/177.51. The following week (February 16), they were in Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. Unfortunately, they lost to Hank Westmoreland in the first round. At their hometown track for the Bakersfield March Meet, the hometown heroes took a first-round loss when Warren's 6.98/222.22 lost to Dwight Salisbury's 6.85/217. The following week (March 8) found them at Lions for an eight-car show. Warren qualified #4 with a 7.09 and he only ran 7.62/140.18 in the first round, but it was enough to advance when Dave Beebe smoked the tires against him and shut off. In the semifinals, he ran even slower (8.90), but he won again when his opponent Carl Olson went into a wheelstand and shut off. This put him into the final against Tom McEwen. James ran his best of the day, a 7.01/225.00, but he was good for the runner-up spot to McEwen's 6.78/215. The team rebounded by winning the seventh annual Fresno Winter Race of Champions. James set Top Speed at 224.43 and in the final beat Gerry Glenn's 7.30/192 with a 7.21/217.90. At Riverside for the HRM Championships, James qualified #23 with a 7.13 in the 32 car field. He fouled in the first round, giving Steve Carbone a freebie into round two. On March 29, they were at OCIR again for the final All-Pro race. James made up for his non-qualifier at the last OCIR race by qualifying #1 with a 6.90/221.66. But the first-round blues persisted when Kelly Brown, driving Lou Baney's car, beat him with a 7.01 while Warren shut off. On April 12, James ran a 6.87/225.00 to qualify #7 in an eight-car show at Lions. He lost to Tom McEwen's 6.82/217 in the first round, with a 7.05/221.12. James lost to Brown again, but this time in the final at OCIR's Fuel Tournament on April 26. The Warren and Coburn car was off at this meet running a 7.73/189 and a 7.27/215.82 to get to the final. In the final, his 7.25/162.45 lost to Brown's 6.84/205 Ford effort. Another runner-up finish followed at Irwindale on May 3. There James ran a 7.10/216.34 in the first round, over Bob Williams and in the semifinals, a 7.23/171.13 beat an out of shape Glenn. In the final, Warren fouled and handed the win to Gary Cochran. The following week (May 10), they were at Lions for an eight-car show, but once again they lost in the first round, when Ron Manke's 6.81/227 beat Warren's 7.02/213.27. On May 17, they showed up at OCIR for a sixteen-car show. A new reverser had been installed and the car got some looks when, after his burnout, James put the dragster in reverse and backed up to the line. He got past round one when Sam Davis in Bill Martin's "400 Jr." fouled. But in round two, James fouled against Brown/Baney. A big win came their way on May 24 at Irwindale for the NHRA Division 7 race. James set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.86/225 over Jack Ewell. In round two, he set Top Speed with a 6.87/225.56 beating Brown/Baney at 6.99/213. In the semifinals, Warren advanced when Westmoreland failed to fire Don Johnson's "Beachcomber." Warren waltzed into the win in the final when opponent Larry Dixon blew his engine on the line. Fremont hosted the NHRA Division 7 race and more than 40 cars that showed up to qualify for the sixteen spots. James set Low ET at 6.83 and ran 6.8s in eliminations. A 6.89/222 beat Jim Dunn in round two while in the semifinals, a 6.85/214 beat Dennis Baca. He was to face Butch Maas in the final, but as the two were fired up and staged to race, it started raining and the race was canceled. Both teams got the full NHRA points. At Dallas on June 15 for the NHRA Springnationals, James used a 6.91/218.44 to qualify 21 in the 32 car show. A first-round 6.90/222.22 beat Tom McEwen and in round two, a tire smoking 7.60/135.33 beat Dave Chenevert's 7.56/174. In the third round, James fouled against Don Prudhomme. At Irwindale's Fourth of July race, Warren qualified #6 in the eight-car show with a 6.98. He made it to the final after winning a coasting contest in the semifinals with Butch Maas when both cars shut off. He had earlier set Top Speed of the meet at 226.70, but in the final, he lost to Cochran. The following day (July 5), the team was at OCIR for the Nitro Championships. Warren got beat by Maas in round two, but Butch blew his motor while winning, so James was reinstated for the semifinal where he fouled against Tommy Allen. One week later (July 12), he was at Irwindale for the second annual "Race with a Reason." He beat Billy Tidwell in the first round, but lost before the finals. At the big 32 car PDA Championships at OCIR on July 19, James qualified #12 with a 6.94. He lasted until the second round when he fouled against Mulligan.

Notes: Larry started the '87 season at Firebird Raceway on January 18 for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.40, but burned a piston while doing it. In the first round, he raced Bill Mullins. Bill got out on Minor and Larry was closing fast before a broken rocker arm slowed his progress. Mullins' 5.76/230 got the win over Larry's 5.75/222.77.

Notes: Fastest car in the sport in 1966 (faster than the 221.12 record set by John Mulligan at Carlsbad in 10/66). Rivero did not back up the run within 1 percent. Ron was at Irwindale on April 9 for a sixteen-car show, but he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Mike Snively. The following day, he was at Riverside for a Jackpot Circuit Race. He won his first-round race, but in the semifinals, his 8.01/200.88 lost to Paul Sutherland's 7.72/203. On April 21, 21 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Pomona for the Pro Circuit race. Rivero qualified, but his first-round 7.90/202.79 lost to Tom McEwen's 7.76/196. Ron won the Jackpot Circuit race at Santa Maria on May 1. He qualified #1 with a 7.93/200.88 and then got the "odd-lot" solo in the opening round and made an easy pass. In the semifinals, his competition lost fire on the line, and once again, he made an easy run to advance (13.47/49.72). Rivero proved that he did not have to take it easy to win; in the final, he won while setting Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.88/207.88. Surprisingly, he failed to qualify for the eight-car show at Carlsbad's Jackpot Circuit race the following week on May 6, but the next weekend, his 7.91 qualified #7 at an eight-car show at Irwindale. Unfortunately, he fouled against Jim Dunn in the first round. On June 11, Rivero was at Lions for an eight-car show. He qualified #4 with a 7.62/204.54, and a 7.90/198.66 beat Jerry Bivens in the first round. He lost to Dave Beebe in the semifinals. Ron qualified #3 at the HRM Championships at Riverside on June 19 with a 7.39/217.90. He went on to set Top Speed of the meet at 221.66 and got into the final by running a 7.43/217.38 in the semifinal over Ken Safford's 7.77/201. McEwen's 7.39/202 put an end to the fun for Rivero in the final. Tulsa hosted the Division 4 points race on July 3, and Ron ran a 7.68/203.32 Low ET of the meet in the first round, but lost to Wayne Burt's 7.76/200 pass. He was at Dragway 42 on August 21 for the NASCAR Summer Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and he lasted until round two before losing to Connie Kalitta. The team did not enter any NHRA national events in 1966.

Notes: The Speed Sport modified roadster campaigned by Lyle Fisher, Gary "Red" Greth, and Don Maynard, one of the more popular cars of its era, produced record-setting performances from 1956 through the early 1960s. Powered by a 354-cid rear-mounted Chrysler Hemi, the 1,500-pound roadster stunned observers with a speed record of 160.14 mph at the 1957 ATAA World Series at Cordova, Ill., and finished the year with a clocking of 169.11 in Tucson, Ariz. Other records include an 8.03/175.78 in March 1960. A 180.72 was backed up by a 179.28 on October 2/1960. The Drag News 1320 Standard Modified Fuel Roadster speed mark was 183.67 eight days later in Alton, Ill. The Speed Sport roadster remained competitive well into the mid-1960s, qualifying for Top Fuel at the 1963 AHRA Winternationals and making its final appearance at the 1964 Bakersfield March Meet. Notes: Gary had a great year in '74. He started the season at Irwindale's Grand Premiere race on January 12. The eight Top Fuel cars in the show were all members of the Cragar Five-Second Club. There was no qualifying as starting positions were drawn from a hat. Beck faced off against Tommy Ivo in the first round, but he got out of shape, and his 7.58/128.20 lost to Ivo's 6.57/208. One week later (January 27), Gary was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3 with a 6.10/233.76. In the first round, he beat Dick LaHaie's 6.26/229 with a 6.15/231.95. In round two, another 6.15 at 230.76 beat Bruce Walker's 6.40/222. But in the semifinals, he tossed a blower belt on the line and watched as eventual winner Mike Wagoner singled into the final. Beck went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and strutted his stuff. A 6.02/240.00 qualified #4, and he improved to a first-round 5.96/239.36 while beating John Austin. His times kept getting quicker, as in round two, a 5.90/223.88 beat John Wiebe's 6.27/226. He uncorked Low ET of the meet in the semifinal with a 5.842/226.13 over Pat Dakin. In the final, he was up against Jerry Ruth, and Ruth's 6.21/226 lost to Beck's strong 5.91/243.24 (Top Speed). This showing really made an impression on the rest of the field, showing that Beck was tough to beat as the season wore on. In March, Beck qualified #3 at Bakersfield for the March Meet with a 6.11/198.66. He beat a crossed-up Gary Ormsby in the first round, and in round two, he got a single when Billy Tidwell failed to show. In the third round, he beat Larry Dixon's Chevy, but it was a costly win as he hurt the motor and could not come back and run Carl Olson in the semifinal. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Beck qualified #1 with a 6.01 (Low ET) at 235.60. A first-round 6.19/225.56 beat Paul Longenecker, and in round two, he lost an engine, but his 6.32/186.72 still beat Jim Hundley. With a new "bullet" installed, Gary got a break in the semifinal when Jim Murphy lost a transmission. Beck was ready for the final against Dave Settles in the "Candies and Hughes" car, but he got a little too excited and fouled, handing Settles the win. At the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown, Gary qualified on the pole, but he failed to make the finals of the eight-car show. He more than made up for it by winning the second NHRA Division 1 race at Cayuga Dragway Park in Ontario, Canada. He beat a tire-smoking Jim Bucher in the first round, and a 6.43/227.84 beat Tony Ceraolo in the semifinal. Beck then set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.38/231.95 that beat Sarge Arciero's 6.77/225 for the victory. Another win came at the fifth annual Northwest Open at Seattle. It was an eight-car show that had 21 cars trying to qualify. Gary qualified #2 with a 6.24/231.36. He picked up his pace to a first-round 5.95/236.84 (Top Speed) to beat Terry Capp's 6.43/231. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a track record 5.94/226.13 over Hank Johnson. In the final, he smoked to a 6.48/236.84 that beat Ernie Hall's troubled 7.37/221. It was another impressive win for Beck as he was the only car in the fives. Yet the wins kept coming. On June 9, he scored again at the NHRA Springnationals at National Trail. He qualified #2 with a 6.03/242.58. A first-round 6.09/230.17 beat Flip Schofield, and in round two, a 6.03/236.22 beat Grant Stoms. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 5.98/245.23 over Wiebe. In the final, he ran low qualifier Olson. Beck roared to a 6.05/247.25 (Top Speed) for the win over Carl's 6.26. He went over to AHRA for its Springnationals at Spokane Raceway. Once again, he took the win. He got to Wiebe again in the semifinals with his 6.15/226.70, beating John's 6.47/196. In the final, he met Don Garlits. When these two raced, it was always worth watching. This time was no different, but Beck whipped the "old man" with a 6.00 (Low ET) at 232.55 over Don's 6.36/230. Gary got knocked back down to earth at the AHRA Grand American at Kansas City on July 7. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.43/211.76, and in the first round, he lost to the #8 qualifier Chris Karamesines when his 6.79 fell to Chris' 6.51. The following week (July 14), he was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. The team was a little off here as Beck only qualified #13 with a 6.41/229.00. He picked up to 6.32/230.76 in the first round, over Arciero's close 6.35/238, but in round two, he fell off to 6.61/225.56 in a loss to Chuck Kurzawa's 6.39/227. At the third NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove, he qualified #4 in the eight-car field and lost to #8 qualifier Hank Endres' 6.37/217 in the first round, with a quicker 6.35/222.22. After a couple of bad weeks, people were quick to say that Beck had lost his combination, but all that went away when they went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Gary ran Sanair's first "five" when he qualified #1 with a 5.91 at 223.32. The second qualifier was Settles, way back at 6.27. In round one, Beck ran 6.20/219.51 to beat Stoms' 6.34/226. In the second round, he hurt his engine while running 5.94/242.58 while beating Jeb Allen's 6.35/218. Lady Luck stepped in, and it rained. This postponed the race until Monday, giving Beck and his crew time to install a new motor for the semifinals. In the semifinals, Jim Bucher smoked his tires against him, and Gary advanced with a 6.28. He faced Settles in the final, and Dave must have been a little nervous seeing Beck's times. Settles fouled away a 6.39 while Beck grabbed the victory with a 6.34/217.91. After such a strong showing, it was surprising that he failed to qualify at the PHR Championships. Although he was not alone as 39 cars had attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Almost as many (38) showed up at New York National for the PRO race on August 17. It was quite a bit easier to qualify as it was a 32 car field. Beck's 6.28/198.66 qualified #14. He improved to 6.07/217.80 in the first round, to beat Dale Thierer, but in the second round, he lost an engine, and his 6.58/169.49 fell to Jim Walther's 6.19/228. Began 1974 season with Beck & Peets on the car before acquiring cigarette manufacturer "Export A" as a sponsor. Won 1974 NHRA World Championship. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Ran 5.940/248.61 at Ontario in 10/74. Ran 5.842 at Winters, 6.01 at Gators, 5.98 at Springs, 6.31 at Summers, 6.21 at Indy, 5.94 at Supernationals, 5.91 at Sanair. Beck won Winternats, Springnats, Grandnats.

Notes: Bob and Joy had a solid NHRA campaign in 1975. They did not qualify at Pomona but ran 6.36/194.38. At Gainesville, they also failed to qualify, finishing as the fifth alternate (times unavailable). Bob qualified #15 at Columbus with a 6.203/234.37 but lost to Don Garlits in round one, 6.03/227 to 6.16/237.46. Bob stepped it up at the Sanair Grand Nationals, qualifying #5 at 6.222- 225.00. In round one, he lost to Grant Stoms, 6.12/229 to 6.40/225. At Indy for the US Nationals, Bob qualified #23 at 6.11 at a booming 245.90 MPH. Unfortunately, he lost again in round one, to Stoms, 6.29/213 to Bob's 6.556 at 239.36. Bob qualified #6 at Seattle with a 6.044/245.23. Unfortunately, he lost again in round one, this time to an Ernie Hall holeshot, 6.256/233.16 to Bob's 6.244/238.72. Bob found the 5-second zone in a big way at NHRA Ontario. He qualified #9 with a 5.889/248.61. Unfortunately, in round one, he lost to Garlits again, 5.79/242 to 6.136/240.64. Don was on his way to his historic Ontario world championship performance, and nobody was going to get in this way! Photo from the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida.

Notes: Ed qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 4.86/294.50. In round one, his 4.87/298.50 defeated Scott Kalitta's 4.91/284. He had a close race with Joe Amato that saw both drivers run 4.86 (Ed at 298.01), but Amato crossed the stripe first. He qualified second at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where his 5.83/298.50 followed Cory McClenathan's 4.82/297. In the opening round, he was upset by Scott Kalitta. At Houston, he set a new track record 4.81 at 298.50 in qualifying #1 for the NHRA Supernationals.McClenathan fouled against him in the opening round, and Ed's 4.87/295.56 advanced. In the second round, Kenny Bernstein's car broke and slowed to 5.19/212, losing to McCulloch's 4.99/291.07. He then beat Doug Herbert in the semifinal with a 4.87/298.11. He faced Rance McDaniel in the final, and the two had a great race, with Ed winning with a 4.90/285.44 over McDaniel's 4.92/284. This was McCulloch's 22nd NHRA National event victory, stretching into '92; it was his fourth win at the last eight NHRA events. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 4.88/293.63 qualified #4 again and made his way into the final. He started by running 4.92/294.50 to beat Pat Dakin, followed by a 5.01/286.98 over a fouling McDaniel at 4.89/296. In the semifinal, he dispatched Mike Dunn's 5.07/276 with a 4.90/296.24. In the final, he faced Eddie Hill, and Hill's 4.87/286 got the win over Ed's slightly quicker 4.86/294.02. Surprisingly, he failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. His 4.98/291.35 was the first alternate, but when McClenathan crashed during qualifying, Ed got into the show. Amato smoked the tires against him in the first round, and McCulloch's 5.10/265.33 advanced. But in the semifinals, Ed smoked the tires and shut off against eventual winner Scott Kalitta. NHRA's next stop was at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals near the end of April. Ed qualified #8 with a 4.94/294.40, but he lost in round one to Dunn. Another first-round loss occurred at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. He qualified #3 with a 4.94/293.25, but his 5.08/253.60 in the first round lost to Tommy Johnson Jr's 5.05/290. He "only" qualified #15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals with a 4.97/282.04, but he improved to 4.93/282.04 in round one to take out Hill. An off-pace 5.17/221.79 in the second round lost to Dunn's 4.95/278. Then came the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. Ed's 5.02/288.46 qualified #8. Once again, Dunn stopped him, this time in the first round, where his 5.02/279 defeated Ed's 5.07/291.73. Twelfth member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club on October 15, 1993, with a 301.70 at Dallas. The 4.815 was the low qualifier at Houston Spring.

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Also 305.18 national record at 94 Gators. Defeated dad Connie in the quickest side by side race ever, 4.748 to 4.789 at 94 Houston. Ran 302.52 at 94 Brainerd. | Dick LaHaie and the team dialed in the new Mert Littlefield supercharger this year and took off. Dick designed a new chassis design and had Murf McKinney build it. That allowed the power to be put to the ground. Murf did not sell the design to other teams for one year. - Dick LaHaie, Racin & Rockin Radio, 2/24/14 | Scott Kalitta was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #4 with a 4.80/303.03. But in the opening round of eliminations, both he and Jim Head ran 4.89 (Scott at 298.50) and Jim got the win light. The next stop was at Arizona for the NHRA Quality Care Nationals. A 4.85/300.70 qualified #9. He improved to a 4.76/298.80 in the first round, to beat Don Prudhomme's 4.89/262. But he lost a close race in round two where his 4.83/298.70 fell to eventual winner Cory McClenathan's 4.82/297. It was then off to Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. The team had its act together there as he qualified the car #3 with a 4.77/296.34. Scott then reset the NHRA record with a 4.72 at 298.21 in the first round, to beat Ed McCulloch's 5.05/292. He seemed to lose in two when he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.03/80, but opponent Shelly Anderson crossed the centerline and was disqualified. He faced his dad, Connie, in the semifinals and youth won over experience as dad's 4.78/291 lost to Scott's 4.78/293.63. This put Scott into the final against another experienced driver, none other than Prudhomme. Scott fell off to a 4.92/274.55 in the final while the "Snake" legged it to a 4.88/294 for his 47th NHRA victory. Next on the NHRA tour was the Gatornationals. There, Scott’s 4.82/303.03 qualified #5. He beat Tommy Johnson Jr's 4.93/291 in the first round, with a 4.85/295.56. A 4.86/299.30 beat Pat Austin in round two and he set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 4.79/305.18 that took out Kenny Bernstein's fireballing 5.21/225. Once again, he met up with his dad, but this time the money was on the line. This time Connie stepped up with a 4.79 of his own to beat Scott's 4.95/271.65 runner-up effort. Early in April, NHRA was at Rockingham for its Invitational race. Fourteen cars showed to battle for one of the eight spots available for the show. Scott set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 4.82/297.81. But in the first round, he smoked the tires against Rachelle Splatt and shut off to a 6.15/154.26 loss.

Notes: First car over 260 with a 262.39 National Record at Gainesville in March 1984 (backed up by 260.11). Just beat Kenny Bernstein to the mark. Did it partially by coming out with a much taller wing than normal (AKA the Kareem Abdul Jabbar wing). Later upped the mark at the Summernationals. Also ran 263.92 at the Cajun Nationals in June 1984. | Joe started the season with a runner-up finish at the season opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #3 with a 5.59/254.23. In the first round his 5.61/243.90 beat Bill Carter's 5.71/245. In round two he ran a single when Chuck Haase broke behind the line. Unfortunately, Joe hurt an engine on the solo and had to replace it with a new "bullet" for the semifinals. There, he faced Don Garlits and Amato won easily with a 5.84/230.17 over "Big Daddy's" 6.01/240. In the final, he ran Gary Ormsby and the two ran a real close race with Gary taking the win with a 5.66/243 over Joe's hard charging 5.67/254.25. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals he made history with the sport's first 260 mph run. He started by qualifying #2 with a 5.53/259.36 behind Gary Beck's Low ET of the meet 5.47. In the first round, a 5.55/257.87 beat Carter's off pace 6.28. In round two, a 5.61/259.36 beat Chris Karamesines' 5.80/243. He broke the 260 mph barrier in the semifinals with a 5.58/260.11 that defeated Winternationals winner Ormsby's 5.66/249. In the final he met with low qualifier Beck. Joe got the victory and improved his Top Speed to a 262.39 at 5.54 in defeating Gary's 5.68/245. A new era had arrived. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Joe grabbed another win. It was an eight-car show and in the first round, he beat an out of shape Gary Read with a 5.56/255.68. In the semifinals, a 5.62 beat Shirley Muldowney's 5.72. In the final, he ran 5.60/259.36 (Top Speed) to beat out Dick LaHaie's 5.64/249. In May, Amato upped his speed to 263.92 at State Capitol Raceway near Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He ran that speed while qualifying #2 with a 5.53 in the eight-car show. In round one, he beat Danny Danell with a 5.65/257.87, but in the semifinals, he had a rear end break and he lost to Beck who went on to win the event.
