Notes: Dick started the '86 season by setting Low ET while qualifying #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.40 at 264.70. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round and crossed the centerline, losing to Gary Beck. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.49/258.62. He made his way into the final by stopping Earl Whiting in the first round, with a 5.54/254.66, while a round two 5.54/257.58 beat Darrell Gwynn. Dick stepped up to a 5.47/258.76 in the semifinals to beat Beck's 5.51/260. This put him into the final against Don Garlits. The two had a good race, but Garlits' 5.50/268 beat Dick's 5.56/259.36. Dick ran 5.41 as one-half of the quickest side-by-sider at that point (with Darrell Gwynn at 5.326). Dick qualified #5 at the World Finals and made it to the semifinals with best times of 5.410/261.39. Photo from 1985 Nationals.

Notes: Kalitta was at Firebird Raceway in Jan during the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event, testing his car. He ran times of 5.61/249.30 and 5.63/237.46. Connie qualified #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.73/236.09. He beat Shannon Stuart in the first round before his 5.69/202 lost to Joe Amato's 5.49/264 in the second round. At the Gatornationals, he ran 5.68/230.65 to qualify #8. He beat Jack Revelle with a 5.63/212.36, but in the second round, his parachute released early, and he lost to Dick LaHaie. Kalitta attempted to qualify for the eight-car show in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, but his 5.75/250.97 best was good for the first alternate. In May, he was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show, but this time he qualified. In the first round, he ran Don Garlits, and although they both ran 5.77s, "Big Daddy" got the win. The next stop for the NHRA tour was Columbus, Ohio, for the Springnationals at National Trail. Kalitta qualified with a 5.70, putting him in the dreaded #9 spot. That spot put him in the first-round race with low qualifier Amato, a race that Joe won. At the end of June, NHRA went to Canada for the Grandnationals, where Kalitta ran 5.58/255.68 to qualify for #4 in the eight-car show. A first-round 5.54/260.26 beat LaHaie's 5.60/259, and he made it past the semifinals to run against Garlits in the final. There, Conrad ran a good 5.62/256.41, but it wasn't good enough as Garlits took the victory with a 5.48/262. In qualifying for the Summernationals at Englishtown in July, Kalitta ran a career-best (to this point) 5.52 at 254.09 to qualify #4. He beat Chris Karamesines in the first round, and in round two, a 5.57/259 beat Amato. He lost to Darrell Gwynn in the semifinals. Conrad took a big win at the next event, the Mile High Nationals in Denver. He qualified #2 with a 5.63/259.36 and made his way to the finals of the eight-car field. He faced Bill Mullins and beat him with a 5.62 to Mullins' 5.68. Things continued to go well when he also racked up the Northstar Nationals win. At Brainerd, he qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 5.551/258.62. He ran career bests of 5.458/264.70 (track records), beating Garlits' 5.576/259 in the first round. A semifinal 5.531/236.22 advanced when Gary Ormsby fouled. In the final, he met another long-time racer, Gene Snow. Kalitta's 5.523/260.86 took the victory over Snow's 5.63/255. Kalitta hoped to make it three in a row when they rolled into Indianapolis for the US Nationals. A 5.61/261.62 qualified #7 for the show. He had the second Low ET of the first round when his 5.60/259.06 beat Junior Kaiser. Unfortunately, a strong second-round run of 5.65/257.28 lost to Garlits' 5.63/261. The next event on the NHRA schedule was the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. It was a tough show to make with the eight cars all qualified at 5.53 or better. Kalitta was in the middle of the pack with a 5.50/256.41 that qualified #5. He lost to low qualifier Gary Beck in the first round. At the Fallnationals, Connie qualified #4 with a 5.54/241.93.

Notes: 5.05 at Winters was half of the quickest side-by-side race (LaHaie 5.091). Photo from Columbus 1989. Ran 5.13 on the 291.54. | Connie found some speed going into the '89 season. It came from one of Sid Waterman's new gear-driven fuel pumps. After Connie had made two qualifying passes at Pomona for the Winternationals at 286 and 288, Sid asked him to try one of his larger fuel pumps. Kalitta installed the pump, and with no other changes, he went out and qualified #3 with a 5.06/291.54 (Top Speed and a track record). He beat Dick LaHaie's 5.09/277 in the first round, with a 5.05/288.64. Unfortunately, he lost to Frank Hawley in the second round. He again qualified #3 at the next NHRA event, the Supernationals at Houston, where he ran a 5.02 for the spot. He lasted until the second round, where he smoked the tires and lost to Hawley. He set Top Speed at the Gatornationals when he qualified #4 with a 5.12/286.98. Kalitta broke in the first round, against Shirley Muldowney. He didn't qualify that well at the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, running a 5.25/274.22 for the #12 spot. He lost to Gary Ormsby in the first round. He lost to Dick LaHaie in the first round, at the next race, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. He qualified #14 with a 5.18/283.82. Conrad qualified in the top half of the field at the Cajun Nationals when he ran a 5.21/279.24 to qualify #7. He beat Jack Ostrander in the first round, but in round two, he first smoked the tires and then tried to get back on it and went into a wheelstand before finally shutting off and losing to Gene Snow. He sidestepped the NHRA schedule for running the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, and while he failed to make the finals, Kalitta set Top Speed of the meet at 271.05. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.10/281.77 but lost to Hank Endres in the first round. Connie traveled up to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he qualified #14 with a 5.37/271.98. A first-round 5.45/270.43 lost to Dennis Forcelle's 5.27/268. He had a bad outing at Englishtown for the Summernationals. His best of 5.33/280.72 failed to qualify, only being good enough for the second alternate. At the tenth race of the season, the Mile High Nationals in Denver, Connie made the show with a 5.44/261.32 (#11). He lost to Ormsby in the first round. He picked it up at the California Nationals, where he qualified #5 with a 5.10/284.99. But once again, he lost early when he smoked the tires against Mike Brotherton in the first round. Connie qualified #5 again at the next meet, the Seafair Nationals at Seattle. A 5.06/281.25 gave him the spot. But it was a repeat of the last event when he smoked the tires and lost to Brotherton in the first round, again. Kalitta finally made a few rounds at the Northstar Nationals. He used a 5.26/280.11 to qualify #10. He was fortunate in the first round, when Ormsby crashed into the guardrail and his 5.19/281.25 advanced. In the second round, he nipped Lori John's 5.27/264 with a 5.26/278.37. In the semifinals, he met Muldowney, and both ran 5.25 at 277, with Shirley picking up the win. After that good run, it was hoped that it would continue at the US Nationals. It didn't. A 5.12/282.66 qualified #15, and he lost to Eddie Hill in the first round. The next NHRA event was the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. Kalitta qualified #11 with a 5.08/277.77. He fouled against Ormsby with a 5.09/263.77 in the first round.

Notes: "Big Daddy" Don Garlits started his season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #1, setting Top Speed as well at 233.16. But Garlits was unhappy after the first round as youngster John Stewart's 6.45 beat his 6.54 in the opening round. Things went more his way at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where once again, he qualified #1 (6.09/235.60). It was a 32-car field, and Don got to solo in the first two rounds, running easy passes of 6.76/149.25 and 8.45/125 before finally racing round three. In that round, he faced Ronnie Martin, and Don narrowly got the win with his 6.20/234, holding off Martin's quicker 6.17/228. In the semifinals, opponent Jerry Wilson got out of shape and crossed the centerline. Garlits still legged it to a 6.19 at only 203.16 for the win. In the final, he went up against the self-proclaimed "King," Jerry Ruth. Ruth was running strong; every one of his runs in eliminations was in the 6.1s. But Ruth snoozed in the final. Although he ran an AHRA ET record of 6.06 at 223.32, it wasn't enough to beat Garlits' 6.16 with an AHRA record of his own at 239.36. It was then off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Due to wet weather (rained out twice), traction was poor. Still, Garlits ran 6.838/230.17 to qualify #5 in the 32-car field. He improved to 6.603/234.37 in the first round to beat Herm Petersen, and in round two, he set Low ET with a 6.510/227.84 to beat Terry Capp. In round three, Denver Schutz had problems on the line and shut off, so Garlits eased it through with a 9.61/89. The semifinals had Don running 6.541/233.76 to stop Jack Martin's 6.83/202. It was "Big Daddy's" day, as a final round 6.741/235.60 (Top Speed) stopped Dennis Baca's 7.07/213 for the money. The following week (February 25), he was at Sacramento, and it looked like he would have another shot at racing Stewart. But in the semifinals, his 6.68/213.28 lost to Jim Herbert's holeshot 6.72/201. Stewart would go on to beat Herbert in the final. Garlits then set his sights on the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.45 qualified #5 in the 32 car show, but in round three, both he and Dwight Salisbury ran 6.68 (Garlits at a Top Speed of the meet 238.09), but Dwight got the win light. He didn't have to wait long before picking up his next win, as it came the following weekend (March 11) at the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont. This was a sixteen-car show, and Garlits' 6.71/232.55 qualified #5. He improved to 6.57/233.76 in round one to cover Tommy Ivo's 6.64/216 and an even better 6.21/234.98 (Top Speed) beat Chris Karamesines in round two. The semifinals saw a rematch of the AHRA Winternationals final, with Ruth staging against Garlits. The results were the same: Garlits' 6.27/232.55 beat Ruth's 6.32/231. In the final, he faced the Low ET car of James Warren. Warren must have been a bit worried as he fouled, handing the win to Don at 6.69/228.42. A week later (March 18), the black car was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Garlits qualified #2 with a 6.087/239.36. He got quicker in round one, with a 6.059/243.24 that beat Karamesines' strong 6.11/236. Garlits speed was a new NHRA record. But in round two, he fell off to a 6.183/241.28, enough to let eventual winner Petersen's 6.08/234 slip by. He qualified #1 at Tulsa for the AHRA Grand American race in April with a 6.37, and he made it into the final before fouling against Vic Brown. Not sure where Don found the time, but while running all these events, he was match racing all over the country. He stopped at Green Valley in May for the AHRA Grand American race. He lasted until the semifinals before his 6.49 lost to John Wiebe's 6.47. His next win came at Denver's Century 21 Raceway for the AHRA Springnationals. Don qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.46/212.26. He beat Mark Williams in the first round before setting Low ET with a 6.33 in round two over a fouling Lee Beard. A 6.38 beat Gary Beck's close 6.40 in the semifinals. His final round victim was Dan Richins. Garlits wasn't running his best at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. It took him four qualifying attempts before his 6.499/230.17 finally got him into the show (#14). But on Sunday, he was the quickest. He started eliminations with a 6.364/226.16 over Don Moody, and his 6.253/233.16 in round two over Pat Dakin was the quickest run made in eliminations. He beat Marvin Schwartz in the semifinal with a 6.490/221.13 and faced Wiebe in the final. John's best on Sunday was only a 6.48, so Garlits was the favorite going into the final, but he slowed to 6.560/225.00 while Wiebe's consistent 6.49/227 grabbed his first-ever NHRA victory. Don became the fourth member of the Cragar Five Second Club with a 5.95 at Portland on July 7, 1973. He ran 5.99/241.93 at Fremont, Ca., in July 1973. Bret Kepner: At the 1973 AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis International Raceway, Don won Top Fuel Eliminator and was low qualifier at 6.14/230.18. At NHRA Indy, Garlits qualified with #18 at 6.261/228.42 and lost to Gary Beck in round one, 6.01/241 to 6.134/234.37. Don also ran 5.90 at Suffolk. Don had a world-beating day at the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario, which rained out on the first Saturday. NHRA attempted to run on Sunday, but it rained out again. The race was rescheduled and run on November 25. Garlits qualified #1 at 5.803/247.25. He beat Carl Olson in round one, 5.980/244.56 to 6.44/228. In round two, his 5.86/245.23 took out Randy Allison's 6.18/200. Ron really stepped up in the semis with a 5.79/245.90 over Dan Richins' 6.69/138. Gaines Markley did not show for the final, but Don' laid down an amazing 5.78/244.56 for the win. We think that was a 5.784. We need confirmation. Notes: Won NHRA Springnationals in 1993. Jim Hawkins' DragStats confirm ET and speed. The second member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club on February 13, 1993, at Pomona, California - an entire season after Bernstein. | Herbert started the '92 season at Firebird Raceway in Jan for a test session. He and his crew chief, Jim Brissette, had their '92 car there and were testing a new 18-finger clutch for the first time, as last season, they had used a 15-finger unit. The first pass was a 4.93/293.73. The speed was a new track record, and the ET tied Eddie Hill's record. Doug smoked the tires on the subsequent two runs before getting a 5.04/291.73 on his final pass. A wounded rear main bearing put an end to the weekend test. The team then went to Pomona in February for the NHRA Winternationals. Doug ran 4.95/293.35 to qualify #10, but then in the first round of eliminations, he stepped up to 4.85/301.60 to beat Mike Dunn's 4.97/281. Herbert had become just the second driver behind Bernstein to break 300 MPH. In round two, he beat Jim Head's 5.07/286 with a 5.08/283.46. Unfortunately, he was stopped by Bernstein's 4.88/292 in the semifinals, where he "only" ran 4.95/295.08. It was a good start for the season. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona the following week, a 4.89/294.69 qualified #5. He set Top Speed of the meet for the second week in a row with a 4.83/299.00 in the first round, over Don Prudhomme's 4.93/276. In the second round, he slowed to 5.01/284.72, losing to Pat Austin's 4.89/294. The next NHRA event was the Slick 50 Nationals at Houston. Herbert qualified #4 with a 4.85/292.39. Another 4.85 at 298.60 in the first round dropped Austin's 4.93/295. In round two, he continued to lay down the numbers, turning a 4.89/298.70 to stop Joe Amato's 4.95/272. His run ended there as he lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch in the semifinals. Doug ran 300 mph again at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 4.86/300.10 to qualify #2. But in the first round, he lost a blower belt and slowed to 9.31 in a loss to Amato's tire-smoking 7.84. After running so well, it was surprising that Doug failed to qualify at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.02/287.53 best was good for the fourth alternate. The problems continued at Atlanta, where his 5.04/292.87 was the first alternate at the NHRA Southern Nationals. The team appeared to be in a slump. Memphis was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Mid-South Nationals. Doug qualified #15 with a 5.05/284.45. He had some luck thrown his way in the first round when Bernstein fouled, and Herbert advanced with a 5.22/265.87. But in the second round, he fouled away a 5.03/295.37 against Amato. Notes: In January, Prudhomme started the season at Firebird Raceway for its test and tune event. After making two early shut-off runs on Friday and a tire-shaking run on Saturday, he had to leave early. The vibration was so bad that it damaged the chassis, and the team had to take it to Al Swindahl's shop so that he could weld on a new rear clip. Everything was good for the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, where Don qualified #11 with a 4.95/280.11. Unfortunately, he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the opening round. He was back at Firebird Raceway in February for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. A 4.96/289.57 qualified #12, and although he improved to 4.93/276.32 in the first round, he lost to Doug Herbert's 4.83/299. He became just the third driver to top 300 mph when he did it in the first week of March at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. His 4.86/301.60 qualified #5. In the first round, Joe Amato's 4.91/289 dropped his 4.90/295.08. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #11 at 4.91/295.37. But that first round continued to be a problem for the "Snake" as his 4.91/293.54 fell to Tommy Johnson Jr's 4.90/296. He was the second qualifier at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, where his 4.92/285.71 followed Amato's 4.91/292. But again, Johnson Jr. stopped him in the first round in a 4.97/288 to 5.06/264.39 battle. He barely made the show at Atlanta, where a 5.02/284.45 qualified #15 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. This time, eventual winner Eddie Hill beat him in round one. Things worsened at Memphis, where his 5.19/279.58 best failed to qualify for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He also could not qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals, where he was the third alternate at 5.07/283.73. Things turned in the right direction at Columbus, where not only did he qualify (#10 at 5.03/282.22), he got his first-round win of the year when his 5.04/282.66 beat Andy Woods' 5.02/288. His happiness was short-lived as Hill's 4.98/289 put his 5.06/283.64 on the trailer in round two. Topeka was NHRA's next stop on the calendar for the Western Nationals. Prudhomme qualified #12 at 5.07/263.15. He was down on power here, as his speed was the slowest of all qualifiers. He got a little luck in round one, where his 5.20/260.79 beat Shelly Anderson's late 5.15/269, but in round two, his 5.24/247.32 was way off of Amato's winning 5.07/287 pace. The NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver was nothing to write home about. He qualified #15 with a 5.39/245.90 and lost to Hill in round one. Sonoma was another bad race for the "Snake" as he was the fourth alternate for the NHRA California Nationals with a 5.19/267.77. At Seattle, he qualified on the "bump" at 5.06/278.81 for the NHRA Northwest Nationals, and he smoked the tires in the first round and lost to Cory McClenathan. Clearly, this was not a good season for Prudhomme, and he needed to get the car headed back in the right direction fast. It didn't happen at Brainerd, where he qualified #13 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.09/281.16. In the first round, his 5.08/269.70 got around Herbert's 5.18/288, but he slipped to a 5.19/265.40 in round two and lost to Rance McDaniel's 5.10/263. Don was the third member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club on 3/06/93 with a 301.60 at Houston. That was Don's best speed of the year, combined with his best ET at 4.860. He also ran a nice 4.931 bump spot ET at 1993 Topeka Fall.

Notes: Ostrander started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His career-best, 5.55/250.34, qualified #13. In the opening round, his 5.68/254.59 lost to Dick Lahaie's 5.30/263. Things didn't go as well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he was the sixth alternate at 5.79/203.85. He ran a new career-best during qualifying at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 5.45/260.79 qualified #7. He had problems in round one, but not as many as Hank Endres, and Jack advanced with a 7.20/118.01. In round two, his off-pace 6.09/193.46 lost to Lahaie's 5.38/263. He had nothing but trouble at Baton Rouge, and the best he could muster in qualifying for the NHRA Cajun Nationals was 7.50/113.36. He obviously failed to qualify. Columbus was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Springnationals. Ostrander qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen car field with a 5.70/247.18. He improved to 5.63/254.52 in the first round, but he was late off the line and still lost to Gene Snow's 5.67/251. In Ennis Fall, Jack was one half of the fastest side-by-side run in history (his 277.43 to Gary Ormsby's 280.28) during qualifying on a 5.295 pass (#10). In round one, he surprised Joe Amato with a new personal best ET, 5.253/275.65 to 7.02/99. Gary Ormsby took a close 5.22/280 to 5.292/277.09 decision over Jack in round two.

Notes: During the 1967 season, Beebe and Mulligan recorded three of the 13 quickest ET's with a best of 6.70 and one of the 14 best Top Speeds at 230.76. - Beebe-Mulligan.com. Confirmed by NHRA.com. | Listed 6.95/216 best on Indy entry form. | John was out to set Top Speed everywhere he went. The Tim Beebe prepared Chrysler Hemi made getting those speeds a little easier for John. He showed up at Carlsbad on January 1 for a Top Fuel show, but only four cars showed. John set Top Speed with a 7.24/230.16 (track record) in his race against Dave Russell. Unfortunately, he hurt the motor and was unable to run in the final. A week later, he was at Lions for an eight-car show. He ran 7.71 over Bob Muravez and 7.67 over Doug Walton to reach the finals, where he lost to Dave Beebe. At the AHRA Winternationals, Mulligan qualified #8 with a 7.78. Another 7.78 in the opening round beat Gerry Glenn's 7.77. In round two, "Sneaky Pete," Robinson got crossed up and shut off, and Mulligan advanced with a 7.53/203. He ran an easy solo in round three when Steve Carbone fouled. He lost to eventual winner Connie Kalitta in the semifinals. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #22 in the 32 car show with a 7.42/213.76. In the first round, he advanced with a 7.53/211.26 when Chris Karamesines fouled. In round two, a 7.40/212.26 beat Marvin Schwartz. But in the third round, his 7.39/212.76 lost to Kalitta's 7.22/214. He was at Famoso on February 19 for the Bakersfield Meet. He lasted until the second round, where his 7.65/196.06 lost to Mike Sorokin's 7.22/200. On March 19, John drove Tom Sturm's funny car at the Amarillo Opener. John was without a ride until June when he jumped behind the wheel of the Beebe Brothers car. Things started well when he won the AHRA 1/8 Mile Championships at St. Louis. He set a new AHRA 1/8 mile record with a 5.05 in qualifying, backed up with a 5.09 in the semifinals. This was not Low ET as Leroy Goldstein qualified #1 with a 4.95, but he broke and could not compete. John won the final with a 5.32/168 over Wayne Strompf's 6.05. On July 4, he was at Tri-City for a best of three match against Tommy Ivo. The first race saw Mulligan's 7.22/212 beat Ivo, but in the second race, Ivo evened up the score with a 7.20/214 over John's 7.34/211.76. Mulligan won the match with a final 7.31/207.84 to beat Ivo's 7.78/171. The team was at Lions for the PDA Championships on July 15. It was a 64 car show that had 125 attend. In the first round, Mulligan's 7.20/218.44 beat Jeep Hampshire. He went on to reach the semifinals, where he beat a tire-smoking Don Prudhomme. But the "Snake" got back in on the break rule when Jack Ewell fouled, and Beebe broke a rear end. In the final, John slowed to a tire spinning 7.99 while Prudhomme picked up the win with a 7.20.

Notes: Shirley started her '77 season at Irwindale for a best of three match race against James Warren. She won all three races and reset both ends of the track record to 5.86/243.24. She did not go to Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, but she was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where she set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.85/248.61. Unfortunately, Muldowney had a distributor clamp come loose in the first round, and it retarded the timing, forcing her to shut down against Rance McDaniel. Her next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Once again, she had problems and in round two a broken magneto cap put her out of the running against Don Garlits. Shirley's early-season woes continued at the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.00 qualified #2, but she fouled against Clayton Harris. in the opening round. Things took a turn for the better in April. She won the NHRA Division 3 race at Indianapolis, and on May 5, Shirley went to OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race and won that too. She also set Top Speed of the meet at 253.52. Her next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was only an eight-car show, and she qualified #2. But in round one, she smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.85 in a loss to Marvin Graham. Everything went Muldowney's way at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. She set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.99/242.58. An opening round 6.12/234.37 beat Frank Bradley's 6.46/203. Jeg Coughlin crossed the centerline in round two, and she advanced with a 6.14/226.70. Garlits blew his engine in the semifinals trying to catch Shirley's 6.07/238.72. EnglishmanClive Skilton was her competition in the final and he was tough as he won his semifinal race with a 6.08. But Shirley ran a 6.11/236.22 to get the victory over Skilton's close 6.15/228. This seemed to be the turning point in her season, as the lady was tough to beat from then on. She won the third NHRA Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan. Things didn't start out so well when she fouled away a 6.16 in the first round, but Coughlin crossed the centerline and the first or worse rule held up and she was reinstated. Shirley set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 6.04/240.64 over Pat Dakin. She then faced Gary Beck in the final, and his 6.26/213 was no match for her 6.06/240.64 (again). The trip to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals was eventful as her race car transporter caught fire. It had to be towed in. Once there, her performance was great. She ran 5.78 and 5.77/243.90 in qualifying. The 5.77 qualified #1 and was Low ET of the meet. Once again, she battled her way to the final. A first-round 6.11 got around a tire-smoking Skilton, and in round two, a 6.05/243 beat Dakin's 6.15. Her slowest run of the weekend, a 6.25/216 advanced in the semifinals when Richard Tharp got out of shape in the "Candies and Hughes" car. This put her into the final against Jeb Allen who always ran good at E-town. Not this time as his car broke, and Shirley picked up another victory with a 6.02/234.37. The following week (July 17), she won the PDA Championships at Seattle with a 6.12/241 (Top Speed). The second PDA race was held at Fremont and Shirley set a track record 5.82 at 240.64 (Top Speed) in qualifying #1. She failed to reach the finals, but she ran well. Muldowney made it three NHRA Nation event wins in a row when she won the Grandnationals in Canada. Once again, she set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.93/240.00. She then ran 6.04 and 6.10 to beat Allen and Grant Stoms to reach the final. There she faced Dakin and he had problems and shut down to 7.14/137 while she motored to 5.95/234 for the win. Shirley was back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. a week later. Of course, her 5.83/227.84 qualified #1, and again she worked her way to the final. A first-round 5.88/244.56 beat Ron Correnti, and a 5.93 took out Dick Rosberg in round two. Shirley was "up" for her semifinal race with Garlits, and her 5.81/246.57 (Low ET and Top Speed) put the "Old Man's" 5.94/242 on the trailer. She was expected to win in the final against John Abbott, who had only run a 6.28 best during eliminations, but he grabbed a holeshot off the line, and his 6.10/231 held on to beat her 6.03/233.75. Another win came at the final NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend on August 21. She was the only five-second qualifier with a 5.92/243.70, and during eliminations, she set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.91/245.90. Shirley soloed in the final over a Larry Brown who had crashed in his semifinal win, but she still ran a strong 5.98/226.13. After running so well, the one race that had to bother her at the end of the year was the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis. There were 60 cars attempting to qualify for the 32 car field and Muldowney qualified #2 with a 5.88. That was good, but in round one, against Dick LaHaie, her transmission wouldn't shift out of low gear, and her 6.36/161 lost to LaHaie's 6.19/221. That was bad, packing up after round one. More problems came at the NHRA Fallnationals in Seattle. Her 5.93 qualified #5 and a 6.17/229.59 beat Rob Bruins' 6.30/225 in round one, but in round two, she shut off on the line with no oil pressure, giving McDaniel a solo into the semifinal. | I saw this world record speed run at OCIR on May 5, 1977. Shirley became the second Top Fuel driver to top 250 mph on the 253.52 and became the second entry into the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. Also 5.78/252.10 at AHRA Winters at Beeline, AZ. Also, 5.77 at the 77 NHRA Summernationals, which Shirley won. - BP

Notes: Were did he run these times? | Joe qualified #2 at the season opening Winternationals at Pomona with a 5.48/261.17. A first-round 5.65/257.87 beat Howard Haight's 6.11/202. He ran a strong 5.49/264.23 over Connie Kalitta in round two. In the semifinals, he fireballed a motor, but still beat Don Garlits who also lost a motor. Amato installed a new "bullet" and went on to win the event by stopping Gary Ormsby in the final. The Winternationals had 34 cars show for the sixteen-car field, but at Gainesville for the Gatornationals, only 17 cars attempted to qualify. Joe qualified #1 with a 5.50 (Low ET) at 251.81. In the first round, he lost an engine on a 5.51/238.47 pass, but still beat Gary Beck who ran 5.69/242. After putting in another engine, he beat Grant Stoms in round two with a 5.52/242. Bill Mullins fouled against him in the semi finals and Joe's 5.65 advanced. In the final he faced Dick LaHaie. Amato ran 5.69/243.63 in the final, but lost to Dick's 5.65/248. He made it into the final of the next NHRA event as well. At the Southern Nationals in Atlanta he qualified #2 with a 5.57/254.66 and made it into the final to face low qualifier Garlits. Joe ran a 5.68/222 to take the runner up spot to Garlits' 5.51/258. Amato qualified #1 again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge with a 5.56/254.64. A first-round 5.67/245 got around Gene Snow and in the semifinals, he ran a strong 5.66, but lost to Garlits who ran Low ET with a 5.55. He kept up his run of qualifying #1 at the NHRA Springnationals where he ran 5.58/256.41 for the spot. Connie Kalitta fell to Joe's 5.72/246 in the first round, and a second round 5.75/251 beat Ormsby's better 5.69/249. In the semifinals, a 5.88/237.46 lost to Gary Beck's 5.72/210. He got his fourth straight number one qualifying spot when he ran 5.53/261.78 to qualify first at the NHRA Grandnationals. He beat Beck in the first round, with a 5.68/253.52, but lost in the semifinals. His role of top qualifier came to an end at the NHRA Summernationals. Joe's best in qualifying was a 5.54/254.38 that was good for the #8 spot in the field. | Joe ran 5.464/257.58 to qualify #3 at Maple Grove NHRA Castrol GTX Keystone Nationals. He Defeated #7 qualifier Gene Snow in round 1 5.499/249.30 to 5.761/226.01 & #1 qualifier Gary Beck in the semis 5.558/223.76 to 6.015/182.77. He would face #4 qualifier Don Garlits in the final, where Amato put up a 5.501/254.95 losing effort to Garlits's 5.441/261.17.

Notes: Won Winternationals and Indy. Great year. | Don started the year at Lions on January 16 for an eight-car show. He failed to qualify, running a best of 7.99/193.12 that was good for third alternate. The next day (January 17), he was at Pomona for another eight-car show. This time he qualified, but in the first round, he fouled against eventual winner Norm Weekly in the "Frantic Four" car. Prudhomme fouled out in the first round, again at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.47, but his red-light advanced James Warren into the second round. A week later, on February 7, he was a happy man as he won the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. A 7.80/204.54 qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field. He soloed with a 7.87/173.74 in the first round, when Willie Redford lost fire in the "Carroll Brothers" car. Warren fouled out against him in round two and Don's 7.77/175.78 advanced. In the semifinals, Rick Stewart also fouled against him and Prudhomme ran 7.75/204.08 to get into the final. His opponent was alternate Bill Alexander who got into the field for Ron Rivero and made it all the way to the final. There, Ron's 7.92/198 lost to the "Snake's" 7.76/201.34. This was Prudhomme's first NHRA National event victory. The "Hawaiian" was at Kingdon for a sixteen-car show on February 21 and Don was running well, beating Tom Hoover in the first round, with a 7.73/201.78, but he failed to reach the finals. Riverside held an eight-car race on March 21 and Don ran 7.94/193.12 to win his first-round race. In the semifinals, his 7.96/195.64 lost to Larry Faust's quick-leaving 8.03/201. On March 28, he was back at Pomona for the big UDRA race. Unfortunately, an 8.01/187.50 in the first round, lost to Stewart's 7.85/199. Prudhomme set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Lions on April 17 for a sixteen-car show with a 7.78/197.80. He beat Frank Pedregon in the first round, with a 7.87/179.64 and a 7.80/198.66 in round two, beat Bob Downey in the A&W car. But in the semifinals, he fouled against Roy Thode. A best of three match race between the "Snake" and the "Mongoose" Tom McEwen was held at Lions on May 1. Don slept in the first race and his 7.56/204.08 lost to McEwen's 7.82/178. In the second race, Prudhomme evened the score by running 7.76/202.24 to beat the "Goose" who shut off to an 8.25/123. But in the final deciding run, once again Don was slow off the line and his quicker 7.62/203.60 lost the race and the match to Tom's 7.84/196. He won the Arizona State Championships at Beeline, setting Low ET as well at 7.60. Another win came on May 23 at the Fifth Annual California State Championships at Half Moon Bay. He qualified #4 with a 7.79 and advanced past a fouling Denny Miliani in the first round. In the semifinals, a 7.68/199.54 got him into the final against low qualifier (7.50) Kenny Safford in the "B&M Tork Master." The race never materialized as Safford lost fire and Prudhomme soloed for the win with a 7.75/203.60. Fontana had over 40 cars attempt to qualify for its Memorial Day Championships. It was a two-day show and on Saturday, May 29, Don qualified #1 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.70/203.60. He beat Thode in the first round, with a 7.57/205.94. In round two, he lost a motor and the race to Mike Sorokin in the "Surfers" car. The following day with a new engine installed, Don fouled in the first round, against Tommy Dyer. In June, Don was back at Fontana for a best of three match race against Sorokin. It was a good match with Don winning the first race with a 7.56/207.36 beating Mike's 7.78/202. The "Surfers" car won the second race with a 7.64/204 beating the "Hawaiian's" 7.84/190.26. But in the final race, Prudhomme won the match by resetting the track record to 7.46 at 206.88 over Mike's 7.77/203.

Notes: Gary Cagle's life is worthy of a movie or book. An L.A. policeman, he had been in a wheelchair since 1948 after getting polio. Before he got into his top fuel car, he had raced on the salt flats and dry lakes and raced a fuel roadster on drag strips. A member of the Gear Grinders, he brought out his A/FD with a blown '57 Chrysler motor to Riverside at an SCTA 1/2 mile drag racing event on Jan. 11. He called his dragster "Half Fast IV." He set an SCTA record for the half-mile at that meet with 172.74 mph. The next week he returned to Riverside for quarter-mile racing but was beaten by Chrisman-Cannon's Hustler. But he had caught the eye of Chet Herbert, and they formed a racing partnership. So with Cagle driving the Herbert Cam Special, They went to Pomona on Jan. 25, just the third time out for the car. Cagle won Top Eliminator and set a new strip speed record with 168.22 mph. At Bakersfield on Feb. 1, he clocked some best times of 9.21 and 175.78 mph. He was making the rounds of Southern California tracks. In mid-February, he broke a blower belt, sending him home after a 9.14 at 167.91 mph run. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he got the meet's Top Speed of 180.36 mph. He also was timed at 180.00 mph, being the only car in the country to have turned over 180 mph twice in the same event. At Vaca Valley, he set a strip record of 175.43 mph on Apr. 12. At Bakersfield on May 3, he was Top Eliminator runner-up with 8.86 and best speed of 178.57 mph. Interestingly, to cure his front end from floating around, he removed the front fairing and chained and wired a heavy floor jack to the front end to give it some weight. In early June, Cagle and Herbert towed their dragster to the first Drag News Invitational at Great Bend, Kansas. This was to have been the beginning of a cross-country tour to strips in Kansas, Texas, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Minnesota, and Washington. His first run off the trailer was a stout 9.24 at 169.81 mph, the latter a track record. While making his second run, he was clocked at 162 mph when he veered slowly to the right into the dirt. The car flipped end over end seven times. It was a horrible crash, literally driving Cagle through the seat. The vehicle was totally demolished. Cagle suffered critical injuries from the crash that kept him hospitalized for weeks. Bob Sullivan put Cagle's engine into his dragster, continuing the tour that Cagle was to have taken. Also 4.967 and 290.32 at Maple Grove 9/89 and 4.996 low qualifier at 89 Houston Supernationals on March 3/1989, which was the fourth entry in the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel. Amato waged a war with Gary Ormsby for the NHRA Top Fuel Championship that went down to the final race. It was wire to wire between the two the whole season. It started at the Winternationals where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.04/280.81. He lost to Frank Bradley in the first round. The Supernationals at Houston was the next race and once again Joe set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 4.99. He beat Dick LaHaie in the first round, with a 5.11 and a 5.09/281 beat Jim Head in round two. In the semifinals, he beat Frank Hawley with a 5.04/285 to go into the final against Ormsby. In the final, Amato took a nap at the line and lost to Gary's 5.09/278 with a quicker 5.03/288.63. Gainesville hosted the Gatornationals on March 19 and for the third straight event, Joe set Low ET in qualifying #1 (5.05). Unfortunately for Amato, a 5.15 by Dennis Forcelle beat his 5.17 in the first round. He was father down the qualifying sheet in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 5.20/275.81 gave him the #8 spot in the field. He picked it up to a 5.15/270.51 in the first round, to beat Shirley Muldowney's 5.28/261. But in round two he fell to Ormsby. At Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals, a 5.06/278.12 qualified #4. In the first round against Eddie Hill, he smoked the tires and lost. At the sixth race of the season, the Cajun Nationals, he qualified well with a 5.15/277.77 for the #3 spot, but he again lost in the first round, this time to Gene Snow. He broke through for his first win of '89 at the Springnationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.10/278.98. Joe beat pat Dakin, Lori Johns (with a 5.08/284), and Ormsby in the semifinals to set up a final round match-up with Hank Endres. In that final round race, Endres tried hard with a 5.22/266, but it was Amato's day and he won with a 5.12/280.72. The NHRA tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. Joe qualified #3 with a 5.17/272.31. In the first round, he dispatched Head's 5.32/267 with a 5.22/275.48. He beat Hill in round two with a 5.28/272.56 to Eddie's close 5.29/272. In the semifinal, Joe ran a 5.25/268.65 that lost to LaHaie's 5.14/279. Race number nine of the season was at Englishtown for the Summernationals. A 5.08/286.18 qualified #2, but he took a first-round loss by Forcelle. Things went more his way at the Mile High Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.22/268.57. He beat Muldowney in the first round, and in round two, a 5.28/264 beat Forcelle's 5.41. In the semifinals, both he and LaHaie ran 5.22's with Joe coming out on top. In the final, he met Ormsby and a 5.21/266.11 covered Gary's 5.33/270. It was Joe's second win of the year. He almost got another win at the next event, the California Nationals. There he qualified way down in the #12 spot with a 5.15/284.18. He advanced past the first-round with a 5.13/270 when opponent Jack Ostrander broke. In round two he beat Hill with a 5.06/282.39 and in the semifinal, a 5.09/282.39 beat Head. In the final, he met Low ET setter and low qualifier Frank Bradley who beat Joe for the title. He made his third final in a row at the Seafair Nationals at Seattle International. He qualified #1 with a 5.03/282.84 and another 5.03 at 280.72 in the first round, beat Hill. In round two a 5.10/278.51 beat Mike Brotherton and in the semifinals, he took a big win over Ormsby with a 5.07/273.88. In the final he ran LaHaie and even though Dick ran a strong 5.10/278, it was no match for Amato who set Low ET with a 5.01/278.98 in winning his third race of the season. The fourth win came pretty quick, it was at the next event, the Northstar Nationals. He had his worst qualifying spot of the season there when he ran a 5.39/255.75 for the #15 position. In the first round, he picked up to a 5.14/279.15 to beat Bradley's identical 5.14/278. He beat a tire-smoking Darrell Gwynn in round two with a 5.20/275.73 and in the semifinals, a 5.16/277 beat Snow's ailing car. In the final, he ran a 5.24/278.81 over Muldowney for the win. Things didn't go as well at Indy for the US Nationals. Joe qualified #4 with a 5.02/286.16. He beat Frank Cook in the first round. In round two he caught Bradley napping and won with a 5.16/287.08 to Frank's 5.11/274. But in the semifinals, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires to a 10.56/74.96 loss to LaHaie's 5.01/280. The next event was the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. A 5.01/283.82 qualified #5 and in the first round, Joe advanced with a 5.00/288.55 when John Carey fouled. He cracked into the fours in round two, running a 4.96/290.32 over Muldowney's 4.97/287. He stayed in the fours in the semifinals with a 4.98/288.18 beating a tire-blazing Ormsby. But in the final, when he definitely needed to run a four, a 5.01/285.98 came in second best to Gwynn's 4.95/281. At the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals, Joe ran a career best (to this point) of 4.95/288.18 to qualify #3. He beat Gene Snow in round one, with a 5.02/286.18 and in round two, a 5.07/287.17 beat Hill. But a semifinal 5.01/291.26 lost to Ormsby's 4.98/289. The second last race of the year was the Fallnationals at Firebird raceway. Joe qualified #3 with a 5.07/280.81. He beat an engine blowing Ed Moore in round one, and a 5.11/277 beat Lori Johns in round two. But a semifinal 5.14 lost to Muldowney's 5.16.

Notes: Quickest ET at the time, Beeline AHRA. Chris qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternationals with the 7.42 but lost to Tom Hoover's 7.78/193.96 in the first round, with a 7.80/196.92. He also qualified #1 with a 7.76 (Low ET) at Pomona on March 28 for a sixteen-car UDRA meet. Bill Leavitt's 7.89/192.70 stopped him in the first round, but Chris' losing 7.95/203.16 held for Top Speed. In June, for the NHRA Springnationals, a 7.67/202.70 qualified Chris third, and on Saturday's AA/FD class runoffs, a 7.80/200.88 beat Danny Ongais (7.99/192.70), who fouled. A second-round 7.67/202.70 advanced when the Ramchargers broke, and a 7.93/202.70 got him into the class runoff with Maynard Rupp. There Chris' engine let go, and Rupp won with a 7.99/142.40. Made the finals at NHRA Bristol 65 with a 7.67/202.70 best. Photo from 7/67.

Notes: Lisa & Rossi purchased this car as a dormant project initially commissioned by fuel pilot Fred Farndon. Roy Fjastad of Speed Products Engineering (SPE) built the car; he designed the rounded-wedge-shaped body (the story goes) with the input of Dan Gurney's aerodynamicists. Tom Hanna was responsible for the metalwork. A dramatic shot of the car dominated the cover of the May '72 issue of Car Craft with a short one-page writeup inside. Known variously as The Wedge (and by others The Flying Doorstop) the car was raced by Lisa & Rossi from 1972/74, when it was sold. It eventually became a bracket racer. Drivers included Bill Tidwell and Danny Ongais. - RT | Ran 6.400/236.84 at Orange County Nitro Championships.

Notes: Amazing times. Early in the year, ran 7.71/198.22 at Lions 2/01/66. | Ran 7.73/195.64 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/66. | Ran 7.30/212 at Pomona 4/66 beating the Surfers' 7.34. | Ran the first generally accepted 7.1-second time with a 7.16 at the AHRA Nationals at Lions in August, and two months later ripped the first six in a match-race at Carlsbad, Calif., with a 6.95. - Drag Racing Online | John ran six of the 20 quickest ETs in 1966 and three of the fastest 19 speeds. - NHRA | Runner-up AHRA Winternationals Irwindale. | John started the season by winning the Jackpot Circuit race at Carlsbad on Jan 9. He qualified second with a 7.62/199.10. He beat Dick Lechien and Bill Leavitt before running a 7.59/205 in the final to beat Tommy Allen's 7.90/208. On January 23 he was at Pomona for its Jackpot race. John qualified fourth with a 7.80/204.08. That wasn't bad considering that there were 34 cars going for the 16 positions. In round two, John lost to Dave Beebe. At the AHRA Winternationals at Irwindale, the team ran well, beating Tom McEwen in the semifinals, but losing an engine while winning. Unfortunately, they were unable to run in the final giving Bob Hightower a single for the win. John's 7.71/198.22 qualified #14 in the 32 car field at Lions for the UDRA Winternationals on February 26. He failed to reach the finals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he ran on Saturday, March 5, for the hoped for "sit out" position for Sunday. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 7.67/195.22 in the first round. John had still qualified for Sunday's show, but he got out of shape in the first round, of eliminations against Mike Snively and lost. The team was at Lions for a sixteen-car show on March 26 where a 7.89/198.66 qualified #7. He beat Gary Casaday in the first round, with a 7.96/196.50, but lost in the next round. Another sixteen-car show was run at Irwindale on April 2. Mulligan beat Dwight Salisbury in the first round, with a 7.76/199.54 before slowing to a 10.64/91.63 second round loss to Dave Beebe's 7.70/210. He won at Lions over an eight-car field on April 9. He qualified #2 with a 7.37 and ran a 7.88/160.71 over Bivens and Fisher in the first round. In the semifinal, Connie Swingle fouled against him and he ended up winning by beating Roy Thode in the final with a 7.65/170. Another win came their way on April 17 at Riverside for a Jackpot Circuit event. John qualified #1 with a 7.67 and he set Low ET with a first-round 7.61, beating Jack Ewell. In the semifinal, a 7.80 beat Tommy Allen who shut off early. In the final, a holeshot 7.95/205.00 beat Paul Sutherland's quicker 7.83/188. The following day (April 18) found them all Lions for an eight-car show. Again John qualified #1; this time, a Low ET of the meet 7.47 at 205.46 got him the spot. Nick Marshall fouled against him in the first round, and Connie Swingle did the same in the semis. John's two runs were 8.05/138.46 and 9.37/106.00, but here he was in another Top Fuel final round. Unfortunately, a final round 8.03/146.34 was no match for James Warren's 7.72. John was runner-up at Lions again on April 23 when he fouled away a 7.57/197.80 against Beebe in the final. Mulligan qualified second with a 7.68/181.08 and had run a 7.85/179.64 over an out of shape Warren and an 8.26/146.10 beat Krohn and Angeleri's Injected Chevy fueler in the semifinals. It was on April 24 that the drag racing world really started to notice the Adams-Warye-Mulligan team when they were at Pomona for a Jackpot Circuit race. In the first round, John soared to Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.30/219.50 drilling of Allen. In the second round, he faced Chuck Griffith, but John's clutch was failing and the car pulled through the beams and fouled. He still ran a 7.43 in the loss. They ran at Beeline's Fuel and Gas Championships on April 30 and even though they beat Glenn Brown in the first round, with a 7.66; the speed of 180.36 showed that they hurt their engine and were unable to run in the semifinal. Lions held a sixteen-car show on May 14, and a 7.96 qualified in the middle of the field. John shut off early in the first round, and his 8.08/142.65 lost to Larry Faust's engine blowing 8.14/182. Since Faust was unable to return, John got back in on the "break rule", but lost again with an ailing 9.58 losing to John Edmunds' 7.92/201. The team traveled to Sacramento on May 22 for the Division 7 points race and qualified with a 7.97 at only 159.50. They failed to reach the finals. John set Lions track records of 7.31/216.34 while qualifying #1 on May 28 for a sixteen-car show. In the first round, he beat Ron Goodsell's 7.85/200 with a 7.39/213.76, but Beebe's 7.59/207 beat John's quicker 7.51/204.54 in the second round. Mulligan set Low ET in qualifying #1 at an eight-car show at Lions on June 11. His 7.42/203.16 led the field, but in the first round, his 7.51/187.50 beat Beebe, but a cylinder wall collapsed and they had to withdraw from competition. John cracked off a Low ET 7.24 at 219.50 to lead qualifying at Riverside for the HRM Championships. Unfortunately, he lost to Mike Sorokin in the first round. He did better at Irwindale on July 9 where he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying at 7.44/214.00. Another 7.44 at 205.94 beat Allen and a 7.50/206.88 beat Ron Hampshire in the semifinals. In the final, he met Danny Ongais who lost a clutch on the line and Mulligan won with a 7.53/213.28. Another win came at Carlsbad on May 29 where he qualified #1 with a 7.49 at a track speed record of 221.12. He ran 7.87/215.30 and Low ET of the meet, 7.44 at 218.44 in the rounds leading up to the final where a 7.91/203.16 beat Tommy Allen's 8.27. On August 7, Mulligan ran 7.16 to qualify first at Lions for the AHRA World Championships. A first-round 7.31/218.44 (Top Speed) beat Bob Brooks, but in the second round, the car failed to fire. Dave Beebe met John at Irwindale on August 20 for a best of three match race. This was big as Dave was winning a lot of races at the time. John won the match two straight with times of 7.49/203.16 over Beebe's 7.68/208 and 7.30/206.88 to Beebe's early shut off 7.76/191.08.

Notes: For the NHRA Winternationals, Kalitta qualified #8 at 7.681 but lost to Tommy Allen in round one, 7.61/208 to 7.62/198.22. He ran 7.62/203.60 at Lions UDRA Winter Championships on 2/11/66 and 7.87 at Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals. Connie qualified with a 7.51/208.32 at Famoso for the March Meet but lost in round two. He faced off against Bobby Langley for a best two out of three match race at Amarillo on March 27. Connie won all three races with a best of 7.67/205.57. He was in Detroit on April 13 for a four-car race. He lost to Chris Karamesines in his first race, and in the second race, his 7.73/208.32 lost to Garlits' 7.65/206. It was not Kalitta's day as in the third race, his 7.76/209.30 lost to Jimmy Nix's 7.85/210. Kalitta ran Bobby Vodnik at Atco on May 1 for a best two out of three match. He set both ends of the track record in the first race with a 7.67/215.30, but he had fouled, and Bobby won the first race. In the second race, Kalitta lost a blower and the match when Bobby's 8.05/197 gave him two wins in a row over the Ford. Kalitta bolted on another blower and soloed with a 7.76/208.80. Another big match race was run at Capitol on May 7 against the "Ramchargers" with Don Westerdale driving. Kalitta won the first race with a 7.35 track speed record of 221.12. In the second race, he fouled away a 7.61/211, letting the "Rams" 7.80/206 have an easy win. Don fouled in the final deciding race, and Kalitta powered through with a 7.49/215.82 match race win. The following day (May 8), Connie was at Madison for a match race against Marvin Schwartz. He beat Marvin two straight, setting track records of 7.92/200.88 to win the match. He was at Cecil County on May 15 for a best of three match against Don Prudhomme in the "B&M Tork Master" car. Prudhomme won the first race with a 7.46/216 over the Ford's 7.80/210.76. In the second race, Kalitta took the win with a 7.48/183.28 over the "Snake," who fouled. However, the slow speed resulted from a blown engine, and Connie could not run the final race. Don soloed to win the match. Richmond hosted the NASCAR Springnationals on May 30, and Kalitta lost a blower during qualifying and suffered slight burns. He was unable to make eliminations. At the NHRA Springnationals in Bristol on June 3, a 7.64 qualified him fifth. He won round one over Dave Babler, 7.549/190.26 to 7.67/208, but he lost to a huge holeshot in round two when his 7.522/200.44 couldn't catch Ray Marsh's 7.87/194. He faced Don Garlits for a best of three match at Detroit on June 11. He had some problems with his magneto in the first race and lost with an 8.67. After tearing the motor down and rebuilding it for the second race, it responded with a 7.99/201, but he still lost to Garlits' 7.65/209. A rematch between the two was run at New York on June 26, but once again, Kalitta had problems, this time, he blew a rear end in the first race, and he was unable to repair, so Garlits soloed to win the second race and the match. Another best-of-three match race was run at Connecticut on July 17 against Mike Snively in the "Hawaiian." Connie won the first race with an 8.02/187.88, beating Mike's quicker 7.89/197. In the second race, Mike's 7.82/173 beat Connie's 7.99/189.46. Snively lost a motor in the last race while Kalitta won the match with a track record 7.77 at 194.38.There were no shortages of match races available as everyone wanted to see the big SOHC Ford take on the Chryslers. On July 23, Kalitta faced Tommy Ivo at Alton. In their first race, the Ford's 7.77/188.28 came out on top over the Chrysler's 8.07/197. Only one more run was needed to decide the winner, as Kalitta again led Ivo through the traps with his 7.81/192.30 winning over Tommy's 7.93/194. He won the Division 3 race at Bluegrass Dragway on July 24 with little opposition. Kalitta faced another tough opponent in the way of Don Prudhomme for a best of three match at Detroit on July 30. Conrad won the first race with a suspect 7.16/209.78, but Don's holeshot 7.83/200 in the second race beat his quicker 7.53/210, and in the final race, Don again proved why he was such a great driver with another holeshot win, 7.75/204 to Connie's much quicker 7.49/208. These two ran each other again at Capitol Raceway on August 6.This time Kalitta got "revenge" on the "Snake. In the first race, Kalitta won with a 7.45/207.36.Prudhomme came back to win the second race with his 7.50/205 edging the Ford's 7.69/188.28.But the last race was all Kalitta's, as his 7.44/213.28 won the match over Don's shut off 11.33.The SOHC had burned a piston on the last run while the "Snake" had lost an engine. On August 21 at the NASCAR Nationals at Dragway 42, Connie qualified sixteenth with a 7.89 and ran a 7.59 best before Pete Robinson beat him in the semifinals. Connie set the Pittsburgh track record at 200.08. At the US Nationals, Connie qualified #3 with a 7.398/212.76. He beat Val LaPorte in round one, 7.419/209.30 to 14.84/78 but lost in the second round with a 7.515/215.82 to a holeshot 7.558/211.76 by Don Prudhomme. Shortly after that, he went to Detroit Dragway for a best of three match against Nick Colbert. Kalitta lost the match. Connie was one of eight fuel dragster drivers selected to race at Cecil County on September 24 for the Mr. USA Fuel Championships. Unfortunately, the big Ford failed to fire in the first round against Tommy Ivo. This dragster's career came to a halt on October 9 in Connecticut. Kalitta was there to face Ivo in a best-of-three-match race. In the first race, he beat Ivo with a 7.27 track record at 204.54, beating Prudhomme's former 7.54 record. But the run came at a price as the big Ford blew and gave Connie an oil bath. He couldn't see through his oil-covered goggles, and he drove into a trench. The car flipped three times and was totally destroyed. He was lucky enough to walk away with some bumps and bruises. Kalitta had to borrow a chassis to stuff his Cammer into for the NHRA World Finals on October 30 since he had wrecked his car. He qualified #6 at 7.387/204.08 but lost to Pete Robinson in round one, 7.20/188 to 7.537/181.08. - Ron Howard

Notes: Gary started the season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.60/253.52. He improved to a 5.414/254.23 in the first round, over low qualifier Dick LaHaie who got out of shape and crossed the centerline. In the second round, he smoked his tires and shut off to 11.84/63.73, which lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.52/253. The NHRA Gatornationals was the team's next stop, and Beck qualified #2 with a 5.47/259.36. He beat Hank Endres in the first round, with a 5.58/253.52, while a round two 5.63/257.87 beat Kalitta's quicker 5.60/255. In the semifinals, Gary ran a strong 5.51/260.71, but he lost to LaHaie's stronger 5.47/258. He again qualified #2 at NHRA's next event, the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. This time a 5.49/259.96 got him the spot. He ran Chris Karamesines in the first round, and his 5.62/253.52 beat the "Greek's" 6.08/175. But in the second round, crew chief Bernie Fedderly put too much power into it, and Beck smoked the tires shutting off to 11.01/70 in a loss to Bill Mullins. Beck then made a stop at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet now held in May. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.55/257.14 and an improved 5.45/263.15 advanced past Denver Schutz, who shut off on the line in the first round. In the semifinals, it was Beck against Don Garlits. There was no love lost between these two. This time Garlits' unreal 5.37/271 was too much for Beck's 5.59/262.39. Back on the NHRA Trail for the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, the Miller American team had all kinds of problems and could only qualify #15 in the sixteen-car field with a 5.77/243.44. Fedderly worked his magic, and the car responded with a 5.63/250.34 in the first round, to beat Frank Bradley's 5.73/242. In round two, Beck had a close one with Joe Amato. Gary's 5.68/245.96 just nipped Joe's 5.69/249. In the semifinals, Gary once again met up with Garlits. This time he gambled on the 'tree and lost giving "Big Daddy" an easy 5.99/241 run into the final. If they thought they were running badly at Baton Rouge, they were not ready for National Trail. There they ran 5.79/247.86 for the "bump" spot at the NHRA Springnationals. This was uncharacteristic for the team. A first-round 5.75/248.34 lost to Jody Smart's 5.64/218 in the first round. Things were not much better at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. A 5.77/245.23 qualified #11, and a first-round 5.59/256.41 lost to Garlits' 5.43/268. The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9, listed a 5.378 for Gary, but we cannot find evidence of that. Removing that ET until we can validate.
