Notes: Stutz's season didn't start so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He had already qualified #12 with a 5.52/258.84. He came back out to try to improve his time. On the run, his parachute release broke, and he was carrying too much speed when he attempted to turn at the turn-off road. The car flipped into the concrete barrier. He was ok, but the car was too damaged to race. The Gunite Express team practically assembled a new car in the pits at Gainesville. The new chassis was an Former Jimmy King car, and it was put together over Thursday and Friday. Donnie Couch tuned the car to a 5.47/253.95 to qualify #9 for the NHRA Gatornationals field. In the opening round of competition, Ray shut off to an 8.54/98.33 that lost to Darrell Gwynn's tire-smoking 5.91/190. He also attempted to qualify for the eight-car field at the NHRA Winston All-Star race. Unfortunately, his 5.48/220.40 best was the first alternate. Atlanta was the team's next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was not a good outing, and a 6.35/164.10 best failed to qualify. The team rebounded at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.71/254.66 qualified #12, and it sure must have made Stutz and Couch happy. But in round one, an off-pace 7.05/129.85 lost to Don Garlits' 5.55/261. Ray was at the Texas Motorplex on June 6 for a four-car race. In his first race, his 5.85/242.39 lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.81/204, and in his second race, he ran 5.56/260.64 to beat Gary Ormsby's 5.75/258. The team did not go to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals or Canada's NHRA Grandnationals. They were also a no-show at the NHRA Summernationals but returned to the NHRA tour at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but his 6.35/221.45 was good for the fourth alternate. Ray was back at the Motorplex on October 4 for the NHRA Chief Nationals, where he was the second alternate with a 5.73/243.83 best. He ended the season at Pomona for the NHRA World Finals, where he ran career bests (to this point) of 5.283/270.75 to qualify #8. Photo from 1987 NHRA Gatornationals Gainesville, FL. Ray's best qualified NHRA times in 1987 were 5.283/270.75 at the Pomona Finals. Was the 5.172/275.22 run at an IHRA event? |

Notes: Dave was driving for Crossley at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #26 with a 7.21/197.80, but he improved to a first-round 6.94/226 to beat Ron Manke. Beebe ran an easy solo in round two when Tom McEwen failed to make it to the line on time and in round three his 7.43/221.12 got around Jim Dunn who shut off early. In the semifinals, he faced eventual winner James Warren, and Dave's 7.29 lost to Warren's 7.26. The team failed to qualify at the Stardust National Open at Las Vegas. |

Notes: Gary qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.51. Unfortunately, he fouled against Don Garlits in the first round. Garlits, in his not-yet-updated '81 car, got Beck to red-light by hitting the throttle before the green. He again qualified #1 at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals, where a 5.47 (Low ET) at 250.69 gave him the spot. A 5.53/249.30 advanced in the first round, when Gene Snow broke. In round two, he beat Dick LaHaie with a 5.55/251.39. In the semifinals, he raced his boss, Larry Minor, and Beck's 5.62/249.30 won over Minor's 5.99/220. This set up a final between him and Joe Amato, who had recorded the first 260 mph run in his semifinal race. Joe got the win with a 5.54/262 over Beck's runner-up effort of 5.68/245.90. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Gary slipped to #3 in qualifying for the eight-car show with a 5.60/253.52. A blown engine finished him in the first round. The Larry Minor team showed at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet. Beck ran 5.48/259.36 to qualify first. An improved 5.45/261.62 beat Butch Blair, while in round two, he set Low ET with a 5.41/261.62 that beat Danny Danell. In the semifinals, he also set Top Speed with a 5.53/262.39 that beat Denver Schutz. In the final, he ran his boss. Gary took the victory with a 5.49/253.52 over Larry's 5.67/256. Back on the NHRA tour for the Cajun Nationals. Beck ran 5.60/252.10 to qualify #4 in the eight-car show. He beat LaHaie in the first round, with a 5.64/253.52 while a 5.53/259.36 advanced in the semifinals when Amato broke a rear end. Once again, Gary had to run his boss, this time for an NHRA victory. Beck got another win with a 5.69/252.10 over Minor at 5.91/246. His next win came at NHRA's next race, the Springnationals. There he qualified #1 at 5.52/257.14 and in the first round, he ran a solo 5.63/255.68. In the second round, Connie Kalitta fouled, and Beck advanced with a 5.69/245.23. He soloed again in the semifinals after Doug Kerhulas could not show after crashing into the catch net in his second-round race. Gary ran 5.49 (Low ET) at 258.62 to advance. In the final, he was up against Amato. Gary got the win with a 5.54/257.14 over Joe's 5.70/243. He kept racking up the wins when he won the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. He qualified #2 with a 5.57/259.36 and beat Danell in the first round, and LaHaie in the semifinals to meet Minor in the final. Gary won the event with a final round 5.76/239.36 over Larry's 6.45/144.00. This was Beck's 18th win in NHRA National Events. The NHRA Summernationals marked a low point in Top Fuel racing when only twelve cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Beck ran 5.52 to qualify #2. He lasted until the semifinals, where he fouled against eventual winner Frank Bradley. The next stop on the NHRA schedule was at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Gary set a track record 5.51 in qualifying #1, but in the first round, he lost to Kalitta, who would go on to win. He again qualified #1 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals at Brainerd with a 5.56/257.14, and he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Gary Ormsby. The NHRA US Nationals at Indy was not a good showing for Beck. Sure he qualified #1 with a 5.51/251.39, but in the first round, a camshaft broke, and the car showed to a 6.59/134 loss to Minor's 6.45/162. |

Notes: Ed McCulloch was a strong runner in '92. It didn't start so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals when he qualified #10 with a 5.02/288.36 and lost to Doug Herbert in the first round. It still didn't look so go when the team exploded two superchargers at the NHRA Arizona Nationals. Ed finally qualified #8 with a 5.05/285.80, but they lost another supercharger (the third) and the race to Gene Snow in the first round. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. McCulloch ran 4.94/291.73 to qualify #6. But in the first round, Bobby Baldwin stepped up to a 4.88/286 to beat Ed's 4.96/287.44. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the team barely qualified, running a 5.03/274.05 for the #15 spot. Once again, he lost in the first round; this time, Eddie Hill got him with a 4.89/293 to Ed's 4.92/290.41. Rockingham hosted the NHRA Winston Invitational in April. It was an eight-car show, and Ed ran 5.05/279.15 to qualify #6. Both he and Kenny Bernstein smoked the tires in the first round, but the "Ace's" 5.46/265.01 came out on top. He ran his best time at the meet in the semifinals, a 5.02/284.36, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 4.96/280. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Ed's 5.01/286.60 qualified #9 for the show, and in round one, he improved to 4.94/289.38 to stop Connie Kalitta from advancing. A second-round 4.98/285.80 beat Bernstein's 5.01/294, but in the semifinals, his 4.99/286.16 lost to Joe Amato's 4.87/287. At Memphis, for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, a 5.03/287.53 qualified #7. A first-round 5.09/284.36 beat Jim Head's 5.23/273, but in round two, his 5.11/281.69 lost to Bernstein's 4.96/295. |

Notes: Hank qualified #8 for the sixteen-car field at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals with a 5.71/248.75. A 5.72/252.59 beat Gene Snow's 5.82/234 in the opening round, but a second-round 5.79/251.46 fell to eventual winner Larry Minor's 5.78/251. He then went to Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Endres qualified #11 with a 5.72/250.69, but he lost to Don Garlits in round one. He really ran well in qualifying at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where he ran 5.52/259.74 for the #5 spot in the show. That was ahead of Gary Beck, Garlits, Connie Kalitta, and a host of others. Alas, in round one, Beck stepped up from his 5.60 in qualifying to run 5.49/257 to defeat Endres' 5.70/256.77. Maple Grove was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Keystone Nationals. Hank qualified #5 once again with a 5.45/262.31. He became just the fifth Top Fuel driver to run a 5.3 time (behind Beck, Garlits, Darrell Gwynn, and Eddie Hill) with a first-round 5.386/247.52 that beat Kalitta. But he smoked the tires hard in round two, and his 8.04/94.27 lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.64/255. At Texas, for the NHRA Chief Nationals, Hank ran 5.44/261.55 to qualify #7. He beat Jack Revelle in the opening round with a 5.56/260.34. In round two, a 5.48/262.31 defeated Earl Whitting before his 5.56/256.26 lost to Gwynn's 5.27/276 in the semifinal. Endres qualified #1 at Phoenix for the NHRA Fallnationals with a 5.497/250.08. Unfortunately, the car broke on the line in the first round against Hill. The NHRA season came to an end at Pomona for the World Finals. A 5.436/261.29 qualified #6. In the opening round, both he and his opponent, Ormsby, had trouble getting traction, and Gary's 6.39/203 beat Hank's 6.44/223.54 in a Top Fuel race similar to the1960ss when the Top Fuel cars blazed the tires the whole length of the track. |

Notes: Hill had a horrendous outing at the NHRA Winternationals. While qualifying, the bolts for the front wing loosened up to a negative angle the the car went skyward. While the front of the dragster attempted to fly, the back wheels stopped the clocks with a 5.21. Eddie pulled the chutes and the car crashed down hard. The car was wrecked, but he was OK. Darrell Gwynn lent Hill their spare chassis and Fuzzy Carter and his crew went to work putting their engine and driveline into the frame. After it was all together, Eddie went to make a pass to qualify and the motor broke (crank). So with one qualifying session left to run, the team again swapped out an engine and with minutes to spare, Hill ran a 5.25/229.47 to qualify #13. That run hurt yet another engine. So for the first-round, they faced (you guessed it), Darrell Gwynn. Hill lost and went home with a destroyed race car and three hurt engines. What a way to start the '89 season. Eddie ran three cars this year. The best qualified NHRA times at standard national events were 5.006 at Ennis Fall 89 and 288.83 at Houston 3/89. The pictured car was definitely run from Memphis to Sonoma. We need to confirm it was the car that ran these best times. Also was a 'shorty' car that ran at Gainesville (and perhaps elsewhere). Look up Jim Hawkins' DragStats when we identify exactly which car ran which race. Where was the 4.935 run? Or is that a misidentification of the 1998 4.936? |

Notes: Jim Hawkins' DragStats shows Melanie's best speed at 329.83 at the Pomona Finals., but he does not list redlight times. Did Melanie redlight against Tony Schumacher at Ennis 05 and run this speed then? |

Notes: Tom was running both his funny car and his fuel dragster this year (as he had for the past couple of years). His new 215" Garlits car carried the "Mongoose" into the record books. The engine of choice for his dragster was an Ed Pink 482 stroker. A half-inch Moldex crank was used along with Venolia pistons. The cam was a Crower. Larry Bowers supplied the magnesium blower that was 30 lbs lighter than aluminum. He went to OCIR for the third All-Pro race, but his 6.61 best failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He then went to Las Vegas for the National Open. It was a sixteen-car show, and he qualified #2. A 6.71 in the first round beat Phil Soares, and he later set a track record 6.50 before losing out in the competition. McEwen took a big win on March 5 at Bakersfield for the March Meet. He qualified #1 with a 6.55/225.56. In the first round, a 6.44/220.04 beat Gary Southern (6.87/216), and in round two, he took it easy when Paul Gommi fouled against him. A 6.35 (Low ET) disposed of Dwight Hughes, and a semifinal 6.40/232.55 (Top Speed) beat Dwight Salisbury. In the final, he met Carl Olson. Once again, he ran 232.55, this time with a 6.44, beating Olson's 6.54/226 for the victory. He kept up his strong pace by qualifying third with a 6.32/237.46 at the NHRA Gatornationals on March 19. An opening round 6.36/231.95 beat Dick McFarland's 6.43/233, and in round two, his 6.28/229.59 beat Chuck Kurzawa's 6.36/232. In the semifinal, he lost to Don Garlits' 6.15 (Low ET) at 228. Even in losing, Tom ran a strong 6.31/231.95. His next stop was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race held on March 25. Unfortunately, McEwen had a fuel pump fail in the first round, and the car refused to start, giving Wayne King a solo into round two. He then spent a lot of time with his Funny Car before returning behind the wheel of his fueler at Lions for the Pro Fuel Circuit race. Twenty-eight cars were attempting to qualify in the eight-car show, and Tom's 6.38 made the field, but he failed to make it into the final. Tom made it two rounds at Columbus with best times of 6.51/210. He was runner-up to Jeb Allen the NHRA Summernationals with best times of 6.41/220. Tom did well at Indy, making it three rounds and running best times of 6.30/223.88. By Ontario, he was running his funny car again. We need confirmation of the 6.19. Ran confirmed 6.310/223.88 at Indy 1972, 6.28 at Gainesville, 6.51 at Columbus, 6.41 at Englishtown, and 6.30 at Indy. |

Notes: In March, Ted ran 6.084/239.36 (Top Speed) to qualify #2 at the NHRA Gatornationals. A first-round 6.372/233.16 lost to Dale Funk's 6.260/220.04. The team then traveled to Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. They qualified #7 in the eight-car show, but a first-round 6.32 lost to Don Garlits' 6.21. Ted still managed to get Top Speed honors with a 230.17. At the IHRA Pro Am Nationals at Rockingham, Ted lost in the first round when his 6.77 fell to Marvin Schwartz, who ran a slower 6.80. He won the NHRA Division 2 race at Suffolk in May, running Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.11/231 in the final over Clayton Harris at 6.27/196. Another win came at Maple Grove for the fifth annual Dutch Classic. Ted qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 6.28/210.77. He beat Charlie Greer's 6.39/225 in the first round with a 6.35/209.79. In the semifinal, he ran an easy 7.28/167.59 for the win when Roger Toth got out of shape and crossed the center line. In the final, Wolf won with a 6.73/225.56 (Top Speed) when Hank Endres smoked the tires against him. On June 8, the team was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. Wolf just made the show with a 6.213/222.77 for the "bump spot" in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 6.282/227.34 failed to get around Dave Settles' 6.163/229.59. rnAt Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals in June, a 6.31 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show. Ted won his first-round match with a 6.22/235 over Bill Pryor at 6.72/181.81. Unfortunately, they were shut off on the line in round two with an oil leak. Ted got a runner-up finish at the NHRA Division 3 race in Cincinnati, Ohio, losing to Garlits' 6.08/238 in the final with a 6.32/227.84. At the NHRA Summernatioals, Ted qualified #14 at 6.297/234.98. He could not make the first round, and Dave Settles filled in against Grant Stoms. The team had a great outing at NHRA Indy, qualifying #8 at 6.030/241.93 and then making it to the semifinals of the 32-car field with a string of fives. In round one, Ted beat Frank Bradley on a holeshot, 5.975/243.24 to 5.961/242.58. It was the quickest and fastest side-by-side race in history. In round two, Ted ran a booming 5.912/245.90 to stop Jim Herbert at 6.125/242.58 (which likely reset the fastest side-by-side speed record). Ted beat Hank Johnson in round three, 6.106/241.93 to 6.224/243.24. Don Garlits ended Ted's day in the semis, 5.892/236.94 to 6.200/238.72. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year.
