Notes: Former Top Gas car. Confirmed 7.056/221.66 (DNQ) at Indy 1968. Tom ran a 7.07 at only 189 at Riverside on 3/24/68. At the second annual Stardust National Open at Las Vegas, Tom qualified #2 in the sixteen-car show with a 7.11. In the first round, he put a holeshot on Don Prudhomme and held on to it for a win. In the second round, he lost to Tom McEwen. Larkin ran his first-ever "six," a 6.99 at OCIR on March 3 for the PDA Championships. Unfortunately, he failed to make the finals. He was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show on April 6, where he lasted until the semifinals. He beat Mike Snively in the first round, with a 7.59/183.28, and in the second round, Norm Weekly fouled against him. Larkin was at Lions on May 11 for an eight-car show. He qualified #6, and in the opening round, his 7.25/178.21 beat Kelly Brown's late-leaving,7.12/212. He then lost to eventual winner Steve Carbone in the semifinal. Tom qualified with a 6.92/184.80 at the PDA Championships at Lions on July 20. A first-round 8.04 got him into round two, where Chris Karamesines' 6.76/218.44 (Low ET) beat his 7.12/166.97. This is Big Tom Larkin (the older one). |

Notes: 23 T Body. This car was the last in the Fire Side Inn cars series; it was, in essence, a state-of-the-art top fueler with a shell, unlike its fellow modified roadsters, which had become a haven for outdated top fuelers equipped with comp roadster-style bodies. Fire Side Inn was, in fact, an upscale steak house located out in the valley of Los Angeles. It was the haunt of many TV and movie stars. Today the National Enquirer was lurking outside its doors looking for gossip. Its owner (whose name escapes me at the moment) initially sponsored a series of exotic sports cars designed to run the dry lakes, all under the restaurant's name. | Also 7.28/212.76 at OCIR on 2/11/68. Dixon was driving the "Fireside Inn" at Lions on April 13 for an eight-car show. He qualified #5 with a 7.10, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.15/212.26 beat low qualifier, James Warren. His 7.55/199.10 beat Ray Ayres in the semifinal, but Ray was reinstated for the final when Dixon could not repair motor damage done on his winning run. |

Notes: Ran 7.24/217 and was runner up to Steve Carbone in the Atlas Oil Tool car at a huge meet at Riverside for the HRM Championships on 3/24/68. After the runner-up finish, he continued to drive for Dave McKenzie when they showed up at Lions on April 13. It was an eight-car show, but there were so many cars that they ran a second eight for the non-qualifiers. Brown just missed qualifying for the first eight, but his 7.16 was the number one qualifier for the second eight. He won his first-round race with a 7.25/138.03, but he lost in the semifinals. He was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show on May 4, but his 7.64 in the opening round of eliminations lost to Joe Lee's 7.39. He qualified #1 at Lions on May 11 for an eight-car show with a 7.04/215.78. Unfortunately, his 7.12/212.26 lost to Tommy Larkin's slower 7.25/175 in the opening round. Kelly was at Lions on August 17 for a four-car show. His 6.95/211.76 qualified #2 behind Rick Ramsey's 6.85/222. He repeated his qualifying ET in the first round, as his 6.95 at 213.28 defeated James Warren's 7.08/223. Brown went on to win the race. Kelly qualified #10 at the NHRA World Finals in October at 7.237 (no speed). He lost in round one, to John Mulligan, 7.12/184 to 7.31/187.50. |

Notes: Bruce Wheeler owner & cc. It ran a 392 (slightly bored?) Bub Reese was driving this car at Capitol Raceway on March 31. While making a warm-up run, the car broke a valve spring. Because of the broken spring, Bub only ran 8.20 in qualifying. After fixing it, the team was ready for round one to face Biddy Winward. Reese defeated Winward's 7.64/211 with a new track record 7.10 at 206.88. Because the field was short, Bud got to solo in the semifinal. The "Wheeler Dealer" was to face Tom Reese in the final. But when Bub pulled to the line, he noticed that the engine had no oil pressure and shut off. |

Notes: Wilson was at Dragway 42 on July 28 for an eight-car show. In the first round, Gary Biggins fouled against him, and Scott blew his SOHC while running a winning 7.26/214.78. Unfortunately, Scott was out of competition for the day and Biggins got back into the show on the "break rule" and went on to win. Scott qualified #18 at NHRA Indy at 6.955/220.04. He stayed consistent in round one but fouled against Leroy Goldstein, who won 7.03/191 to Scott's 7.03/214.78. That was his only NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Ken qualified in the top half of the 32 car show at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran a 7.12/221.66 that qualified #13. An off pace 7.80 in the first round, lost to Hank Westmoreland's 7.10. Ken ran well at the sixth annual Fresno Winter race of Champions, beating Frank Martinez's 7.18 in the first round, with a holeshot 7.20. In the second round, Bobby Hightower fouled against him, and in the semifinals, he slowed to a 7.65 that lost to James Warren's 7.17. He won the West Coast Championships at Fremont on March 17, setting a track record 6.96 along the way to the winner's circle. He was at Irwindale on May 4 for a sixteen-car show. His opening round 7.22/214.28 beat Denny Fitt, but in round two, his 7.40 fell to John Mulligan's 7.23. OCIR held a sixteen-car show on May 25, and Safford and Gotelli were there. It was a short visit as in the opening round of eliminations, Safford's 7.12/220.04 lost to Dave Beebe's quicker-leaving 7.13/217. Kenny was at Irwindale on June 29, but he lost a close race in the first round, when his 7.41/219.90 lost to Ron Hampshire's 7.40/208. At the OCIR Nitro Championships, Safford qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.18/222.26. He beat Wayne King in Tony Waters' car in the first round, with a 7.29/207.30 while a 7.57/204.54 advanced him into the semifinals. There, he lost to Jim Dunn. A 6.99/219.50 qualified #9 at Lions for the PDA Championships. He met low qualifier Jerry Ruth in the first round, and his 7.14/214.78 lost to Ruth's 7.01/227. He got another first-round loss at Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships on August 3. His 7.24/220.58 lost to King's Low ET and Top Speed 6.90/223. At the Fremont Fuel Championships, he lasted until round two, where a broken fuel pump stopped him in his run against James Warren. Kenny advanced past the first-round when Rich Zoucha broke. He fouled against Gerry Glenn in the first round, at Sacramento for NHRA's fourth Division 7 race. This team was way too good to be losing so early in these races. Things took a turn for the better on August 17 at Fremont. Safford set Low ET at 7.06 and went to the final before losing to Butch Maas, driving for the Berry Brothers. On August 31, the team qualified #1 at OCIR for an eight-car show with a 7.16/218.44. A first-round 7.29/215.82 lost to Warren's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet run of 7.01/227. Fortunately for Safford, Warren hurt a motor while winning and could not continue. Kenny got back into the show with the break rule in effect (the quickest loser from the previous round is reinstated). In the semifinals, he ran 7.66/200 to take out Goss-Smyer. So Safford was now in the final where he was up against Johnny Martin. Kenny tried hard, but the motor was just not up to snuff as his 7.54/208.80 finished second best to Johnny's 7.27/212. |

Notes: Jeep had an exciting day at OCIR on May 25. He was there for a sixteen-car show, and in round one, he faced Bob Downey in Leland Kolb's car. Bob won the race with a 7.16/196 while Jeep followed him through with a 7.25/200, losing a blower. The Supercharger and Fuel Injection hit the car's nose, bounced off, and then hit the cowl. After that, it fell off between the rear tire and headers, messing up the body panel. Hampshire was OK, but the car needed work. He was at Lions on June 8 for an eight-car show. An opening round 7.17/214.28 beat Frank Rupert in the "Black Plague" car but a late leaving,7.26/214.28 lost to Ray Ayer's 7.34/217 in the semifinal. On July 6, Jeep was back at OCIR for the Nitro Championships. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.20/191.88, but in the first round, his off-pace 7.86/168 lost to Jim Dunn's 7.65/218. The following week (July 12), he was at Carlsbad for the third NHRA Division 7 race. He lost to his brother Ron Hampshire in the first round. Jeep failed to qualify in the low sixteen at Lions for the PDA Championships, but there were so many cars that they had a second field of sixteen in which Jeep qualified #3 with a 7.06/218.44. He improved to 7.00/221.60 in the first round, win over Joe Winters' 7.07/215 but lost to Danny Ongais in the second round. |

Notes: Downey was at Beeline Dragway in January for the AHRA Winternationals. It was reported that 92 cars attempted to qualify for the 32 car field. Bob qualified, but he got out of shape in the opening round of eliminations and lost to Leroy Goldstein. He went to Pomona, where the car count was still high(80 cars for 32 spots)for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.10/220.04 qualified #12. A 7.12/220.58 in the first round, beat Dennis Baca's 7.21/200. Despite running a strong 7.11/201.78 in round two, he lost to the eventual winner James Warren's 7.08/222. He competed at the PDA Championships held at OCIR on March 3. He easily qualified for the 64 car show, but he lost early. Shortly after that, he was at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 7.048 qualified #12 for the 32 car show. Unfortunately, he fouled in the opening round against Dominic Cardoza. Bob was in Leland Kolb's car at Indy. |

Notes: AKA Black Plague. Rupert was at Lions on June 8 for an eight-car show. He qualified #2 with a 7.06/223.32 (Top Speed). Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the opening round of eliminations and lost to Jeep Hampshire. Frank was at Irwindale for the Gold Cup Championships in August. In the first round, he beat Bill Alexander's 7.46/199 with a 7.35/203.60, but he fouled away a 7.26/183.62 against Wayne King in round two. |
