Notes: Won Division 2 in 1966. Ran 7.64 at 1966 AHRA Winter Nationals at Irwindale. We need to confirm it was in his own car. He drove several in 1966. Confirmed 7.70 and 7.78 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/66. Nix fouled out against Bob Hightower in the second round at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.56. This time he made it into the third round before losing to James Warren. He was at Lions for the UDRA Winternationals. Nix ran a 7.77/205.60 to qualify #21 in the show, but he failed to make the finals. |

Notes: Ongais was one of the best "raw" drivers. He was never "rattled" and seldom fouled. If your car was down on hp, he more than made up for it on the line with his starting line prowess. Danny won more at Carlsbad than anywhere else. On July 1, he was there for an eight-car show, which he won with a 7.58/205.00 (Low ET and Top Speed) in beating Tommy Allen in the final. The following day, he went to Irwindale for another eight-car show. His 7.72 in qualifying failed to make the show, but Steve Carbone qualified but broke, so Danny took his place. He improved to 7.68/200.88 in the opening round to beat Paul Sutherland's 7.98/190. Tom McEwen fouled against him in the semifinal and a 10.19/150.00 advanced. He faced John Mulligan in the final, and Ongais fouled while Mulligan ran 7.64 for the win. On July 9, he was back at Irwindale for another eight-car show. A 7.53/203.60 defeated Bob Mayer in round one, and he beat Herb Ries with another 7.53 at 201.34 in the semifinal. He lined up next to Mulligan for the second week in a row for the title. This time, a broken clutch kept him from giving Mulligan a race. He was doing well at the weekly TF shows, but the wins were eluding him, even at Carlsbad on August 5, where although his 8.11/191.08 in the semifinal had won when Jeep Hampshire broke, a blown engine kept him from lining up against Allen in the final. At Indy, for the NHRA Nationals, he ran 7.49/207.36 to qualify #6. On Sunday, he ran 7.57/181.08 in the opening round to beat McEwen's 7.81/201. In the second round, Marvin Schwartz's better 7.41/207 lost to Ongais' 7.47/210.76. In the semifinal, The "Ramchargers" car driven by Don Westerdale failed to fire, so Danny advanced to the final against Don Prudhomme. A quick 7.46/207.36 beat the "Snake's" 7.60/197 and gave Ongais the sit-out position to race the winner of Monday's eliminations. The "Hawaiian," with Mike Snively driving, won the title on Monday and then beat Ongais for the Nationals title, 7.32/215 to 7.448/208.32, after Danny fouled. Shortly after that (September 16), he was at Carlsbad, where he set Low ET before fouling against Leroy Goldstein in the semifinal. The following day was not a good one. He was at Irwindale for an eight-car show, and after running a 7.62/172, the engine "let go." The dragster ran over parts from the engine, got sideways, and then rolled through the lights. The chassis broke into three pieces, with the roll cage staying intact. Ongais was alright, but the car was history. Tom Hanna body. |

Notes: On April 30, Steve was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. A first-round 7.77/208.32 beat Ron Hampshire's quicker 7.68/203. In round two he shut off to an 8.26/157 that lost to Danny Ongais' 7.72/201. On May 7 he was back at Irwindale for another sixteen-car show. He qualified #1 with a 7.83 and got a solo (8.20/150.75) in the first round. In the second round, an 8.07/195.22 beat Gary Read's quicker 8.02/180. A semifinal 7.70/175 by Jim Dunn beat Steve's out of shape pass. Lions held a sixteen-car show on May 28 and despite running a 7.47/209.78 in the first round, he lost to John Edmund's 7.73/196. He managed to make it into the final at Irwindale on June 4. He qualified #4 and ran 7.87/199.54 in the first round, over Ray Ayres' 7.89/191. He met Ayer again in the semifinal when Ray got back in on the break rule. Ayer's failed to fire and Porter found himself in the final against Tommy Allen. Unfortunately, he fouled and gave Tommy an easy 13.41/29 trip into the winner's circle. Steve was at Irwindale on June 11 for an eight-car show. He beat Dunn in the first round, with a 7.81/201.34, but he fouled against Mike Sorokin in the semifinal. At the HRM Championships at Riverside on June 19, Steve ran a 7.75/204.54 and just barely made the field (#31). He lost early there. |
