Notes: Gene Snow built this Top Fuel car for the '72 season. The 225" chassis was built by Woody Gilmore (RCE), and a Keith Black Hemi powered it. Internals include Crower cam, M/T rods, and Forgedtrue 6.5:1 pistons. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold while the 76% nitro was fed to the engine by Enderle injection. The GMC 6/71 was built by Don Hampton. Don Kirby did the paint, and Nat Quick did the lettering. Snow picked 21-year-old Chip Woodall, who had recently been driving for Jackie Peebles to handle the dragster. He debuted at Pomona and qualified at 6.71/194 but lost the first-round on a fouling 7.27/204. He won NHRA Columbus with best times of 6.396/225.00. The 6.396 was low et and #1 qualifier. In round two, he ran 6.490/227.27 at the Amarillo World Finals but lost to a Herm Petersen holeshot 6.52. Those three were the only NHRA national events for the team in 1972. Chip was injured in an accident in Hope, Arkansas, on the way to the Summernationals, and the car was destroyed. Did Chip earlier run 6.20 at NED? Where were the 6.11/233 numbers run?

Notes: Olson won Top Fuel at Pomona in 1972. Runner up at Columbus 72. Semis at the Summers. He also ran 6.21 and 6.233/227.27 at Indy 1972, 6.18 at 229.59 at Ontario 72, and 6.29 at Martin. | This team had a great year in '72. Mike Kuhl was a talented engine builder, and Carl Olson knew how to drive. The season started at OCIR for the second All-Pro race. Carl’s 6.65 in the opening round beat a quicker 6.62 by Jim Paoli. In the semifinals, eventual winner Don Moody strapped a 6.46 on him that beat his 6.60. The following week (January 28), they were at Lions for the Grand Premiere race. Olson qualified #9, giving him the honor of facing low qualifier Don Prudhomme in the first round. He pushed the 'tree a little too hard and fouled. Don went on to win the event. It was then off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. They didn't qualify so well as their 6.87 was good for the #29 spot in the 32-car show, but in eliminations, he picked up two-tenths. A first-round 6.60 beat Chris Karamesines' 6.85, and in round two, another 6.60 beat a tire-smoking Tony Nancy. In the third round, both he and Prudhomme were on and off the pedal in a twin tire smoker that saw Olson come out on top. In the semifinals, Gary Cochran was shut off on the line with a fuel leak so Olson took it easy on the run. He faced #2 qualifier Dennis Baca in the final, and Baca had been running 6.50s, so he was tough. But in their race, Dennis smoked the tires and Olson got the victory with a 6.74/219.51. It was then back to OCIR for the third All-Pro race. It was another eight-car field and Olson just made the show, running a 6.56 for the #8 spot. In round one, Paul Gommi fouled against him, and in the semifinals, his 6.58/227.27 beat Jeb Allen's 6.74/218 and moved him into another final round. He faced a very tough customer in the form of Clayton Harris who was about to break out and have a great year. At this event, Harris had been running 6.20s. No one was close to him in performance, and it showed in the final, where Carl's 6.57/227.27 finished runner-up to Harris' 6.27/234. It was then on to the Bakersfield March Meet, where Olson qualified #6 with a 6.67/224.42. He beat John Rodeck's 7.01 in the first round, with a 6.72 and a 6.64/223.88 took out Phil Soares' 6.68 in round two. Round three (32-car field) had Olson's 6.70 beat Herm Petersen and in the semifinals, he beat Allen. Tom McEwen was his final-round opponent, and once again, he was the underdog. McEwen had dipped into the 6.30s in eliminations, and in the final, Olson stepped up with a 6.54/226.13, but it wasn't enough as the 'Goose" won with a 6.44/232. The team scored another runner-up finish at Fresno for the Race of Champions event. There, the car broke just off the line in the final against Baca. The runner-up finishes didn't stop there, as on March 25, they were at the final OCIR All-Pro race. The final event featured a sixteen-car field. Olson ran 6.58 over Billy Tidwell in the opening round and a 6.55 beat Nancy in round two. Dwight Salisbury smoked the tires in the semis, and a 6.46 moved the "Kuhl and Olson" car into the final. He faced the "Snake," and Prudhomme had the advantage, running a 6.34/235 to win only Olson's 6.49/225.56. But Olson had accumulated the most points and won the OCIR All-Pro points championship. In April, the team competed at the Pro Fuel Circuit race at Lions. Olson didn't win, but he ran a strong 6.45 in the first round. Yet another runner-up finish came at the Pro Fuel Circuit race at Ventura County. It was an interesting show for Carl. He had run 6.46 to qualify, and then, in the first round of eliminations, Bob Ivett fouled against him. Olson’s car broke on the line, so he got out and started to push it down the track. After pushing it for a while, the starter figured that enough was enough, and he would eventually get it there; a push truck pushed it off the track. The car was repaired and won the semifinal race, moving Carl into the final with Norm Wilcox. This time, Olson lost to a holeshot that saw his 6.37 fall to Wilcox's 6.39. They traveled to Seattle for the Northwest National Open. They were running great. Larry Hendrickson was the first car to fall to Olson's 6.38/227.27. In round two, he and McEwen had a close one, but Carl's 6.34/229.59 overcame Tom's 6.35/235. In the semifinals, Olson blasted out a 6.40/224.42 to trailer Hank Johnson's 6.43/234. As good as the team had been running, they had nothing at co-finalist Jerry Ruth, who had set a 6.19 track record in his semifinal race. Unfortunately, Olson had to shut off on the line with no oil pressure in the final while Ruth roared to a 6.24/236 for the win. They must have been getting sick of all their runner-up finishes, but at least they were getting into the final rounds. Early in June, they were in Dallas for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals. Olson qualified #1 with a new IHRA record of 6.20. His speed on the run was 222.22. He beat Doug Mead with a 6.34/216.34, and in round two, he ran 6.45/162 over Marvin Graham's 6.83. Dan Rightsell broke against him in the semifinals, and Olson advanced with a 6.57. The team found themselves in another top fuel final round. But the trend continued - second qualifier "TV" Tommy Ivo ran a 6.25/237.46 in the final to nip Olson's 6.26/233.16. A week later (June 11), they were at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Carl’s 6.52 qualified #10. In the first round, he got a good start, and his 6.53 held off Flip Schofield's quicker 6.51. In round two, he beat Billy Campbell's 6.58 with a 6.42, and another 6.42 beat Chuck Kurzawa's 6.56 in the semifinals. His opponent in the final was low qualifier Chip Woodall, driving Gene Snow's dragster. Olson was late off the line in their final round meeting, and his 6.73/223.32 lost to Woodall's 6.81/218. Carls's best NHRA speed was in Indy eliminations at 230.17.

Notes: Cast iron, Chevy. Quickest and fastest Chevy at the time! Howard was the 16th alternate (times not reported) at the Winters, but we don't know if it was in this car. We formerly listed a 6.40/233.16 at NHRA Ontario 10/72, but the team was not in any qualifying lists at that race (even DNQ). We need to confirm the correct event or an alternate year for these numbers. Interestingly, the similarly named (to Cochrum) Gary Cochran ran 6.40 in a DNQ effort at Ontario. Could this have been the misidentification?

Notes: 6.27 at Irwindale Grand Prix 72 The Top Fuel team of Brent Cannon and Phil Soares were bucking the trend in '72 by having Don Long built them a 225" dragster that was still using an early Hemi. By then, everyone was running the 426 style Hemi. There were still a few holdouts, but to see a new rear-engined car with an early Hemi was rare. Soares built the engine using a '58 block with a Delta stroker crank. Ansen rods support Brooks 6:1 pistons. The cam, lifters, and pushrods were from Isky. Mondello reworked the heads. At the top of the engine, a Vancharger prepared the 6/71 blower. Cragar supplied the blower drive, manifold, as well as headers. The injection was by Enderle. The paint was by George Cerney. The team had invested $25,000, and the car's first outing was in January at the Lions Grand Premiere. The best early times were 6.79/215. The team ran two NHRA national events, Pomona and Ontario. They were the 9th alternate at Pomona at 7.08/210 and the 10th alternate at Ontario at 6.351/225.

Notes: Vic ran 6.452/218.97 at the Tulsa PRA National Challenge. He qualified #12 at the Ontario Supernationals at 6.252/216.86. In round one, he beat Dennis Baca, 6.64/197.36 to 7.29/190.07. In round two, his excellent 6.040/225.56 defeated a Pat Dakin shutoff. In the semis, he ran 6.034/231.95 to defeat the NHRA's first five-second run on a holeshot. Mike Snively's 5.974/235.69 trailed through the lights on the quickest side-by-side race in history. In the final, Brown fouled away a 6.49/192.30, giving him the best view of Don Moody's unreal 5.91/231.95 all-time best for the win. Some info from Freddie Young.

Notes: Baca started the season by winning the Fremont New Year's race on January 2. He qualified #1 with a 6.44 and beat a fouling Dwight Hughes in the first round, with a 6.60. He had another easy run in the semis when Flip Schofield fouled, but he beat Gary Ormsby with a 6.43 track record in the final. He didn't do quite as well on January 28 at the Lions Grand Premiere, as a 6.47/229.59 lost to James Warren's 6.44/231 in the first round. Dennis ran well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.51/231.95 (Top Speed). He ran 6.50, followed by an easy single, a 6.56/231.95, and a 6.73 to make the final over, in order, Hank Johnson, Frank Bradley, Don Moody, and Dale Funk. In the final, he smoked the tires to a 7.33/214.79 that finished second best to Carl Olson's 6.74/219. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #3 with a 6.65. Unfortunately, he lost the race against Dwight Salisbury when his motor blew at half-track in the first round. He ran well at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, going all the way to the semifinals before Don Garlits beat him with 6.18/236.22 times. Dennis still ran a 6.4, but it paled compared to Don's run. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Irwindale's NHRA Division 7 Opener with a 6.38 but failed to reach the finals. Dennis ran his best ET of the year at 6.14 at the Last Drag Race, Long Beach, CA, 12/02/72. He ran 6.297/229.59 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge (runner-up to Moody). Also ran 6.175/230.76 at Ontario 1972 and 6.16 at Lions WCS 72, which was half of the quickest side by side run in history (Don Moody 6.13). AKA Carpetbagger.

Notes: The Warren and Coburn team was at OCIR on January 2 for the Opening All-Pro race. Warren qualified #5 in the eight-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Don Moody. The two had a great race that saw James' 6.54/227.84 get the measure of Don's 6.59/222. Unfortunately, the team hurt some parts, and Moody could replace them on the "break rule." They were at Lions on January 28 for its Grand Premiere race. It was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, James hurt the motor on a 6.44/231.36 pass that beat Dennis Baca's 6.47/229. The team was unable to repair in time for their race against Jeb Allen in round two. The next stop was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Warren qualified #17 for the 32 car field, forcing him to run low qualifier Don Garlits in the opening round. Both had a hard time getting traction, but Warren recovered first, and his 6.95 beat Garlits' 7.26. After taking out the low qualifier, you would think that Warren would have hung around a while in eliminations, but nope, he got dumped by Dwight Salisbury in round two. At the third OCIR All-Pro race, he qualified #2 with a 6.46 behind Clayton Harris' unreal 6.24. A 6.47 in the opening round beat Allen's 6.63, but once again, the car broke and was unable to be fixed in time for round two. Jeb was reinstated. The team was the favorite at their hometown track for the Bakersfield in March. 75 cars attempted to qualify for the 32 car field, and Warren's 6.69 qualified #7. Randy Allison lost fire in the first round, and Warren made an easy pass to advance. He then beat Bob Noice in round two before losing to Salisbury in the third round. Shortly after that, they went to Irwindale for its first Top Fuel show of the year. James set Low ET in qualifying with a 6.64 at 205.94, but he failed to reach the final. James ran and 6.481/197.80 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge. James finished first in Division 7 points, the first of four division points wins. He also ran 6.21 at Irwindale. He also ran at the Last Drag Race, Long Beach CA 12/02/72. James did not set the national event series on fire despite his toughness within the division. He qualified #17 at Pomona at 6.772/220.04 and upset #1 qualifier Don Garlits in round one, 6.95/215.31 to 7.26/223.32. But Dwight Salisbury took him out in round two, 6.64/227 to 6.75/215.31. James' next NHRA national event was the World Finals at Amarillo in October. He qualified #6 at 6.70 (no speed) and defeated Divison 2's Charlie Moulder in round one, 6.55/213 to 6.86/212. The eventual winner (and thus, world champion) Jim Walther took him out in round two, 6.42/225 to 6.56/196. James 6.35 was the ninth alternate at Ontario, a far cry from the eventual 5.90s that it took to win.

Notes: Gene Mooneyham had some lasting impressions on the sport of drag racing. Everyone remembers the wild #554 Chrysler-powered, '34 Ford Coupe. Then, in the mid-'60s, he was part of the Mooneyham-Ferguson-Jackson-Faust team. After that, he became the chief engine builder at Keith Black Racing. For the '72 season, he had Boogie Scott build this car. Scott also did the bodywork. The engine was a Mooneyham built 426 Hemi that used a lot of KB parts due to his affiliation. A Velasco crank was used as well as Ansen rods that held 10:1 KB pistons. Engle supplied the cam. Of course, the blower drive and manifold came from Cragar while the GMC 6/71 was reworked by Mooneyham himself. The 90% nitro mix was fed through an Enderle injection unit. Gene’s son, Fred (nicknamed "Fearless Fred") drove the car and he ran 6.37 in it at the tender age of eighteen. | Ran 6.68 at Irwindale Grand Prix 72, 6.58 at OCIR, 230.17 at the OCIR Nitro Championships.

Notes: Howard was the 16th alternate (times not reported) at the Winters, but we don't know if it was in this car. The 230 mph speed is highly suspect. This run likely occurred in a later year.

Notes: Ran 6.36 at Marion County, 6.85 at Pomona, 6.47 at Gainesville, and 6.31 at Tulsa. | Chris made history on September 18 by running a 6.44 to qualify #6 at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. What's so special about that? Well he did it running the first Milodon Aluminum 426 Hemi. He switched back to a steel motor for eliminations. He equaled his qualifying effort with a first-round 6.44/218.97 over Jim Hundley, but in round two he lost to Tommy Ivo.

Notes: Steve won the AHRA Winternationals. It was one of the last front-engine dragster national event wins. (Art Marshall won the Grand Nationals later that year). He then qualified #27 at Pomona at 6.848/214.28 but got stronger throughout eliminations. Steve surprised Jim Nicoll in round one, 6.67/227.84 to 6.88/194. In round two, he ran a quicker and faster, but losing, 6.56/229.59 that fell to Don Prudhomme's holeshot-aided 6.58/201. Steve's next event was the Ontario World Finals, where he was a DNQ (times unavailable). We are unsure if that was in the front engine car or a new dragster.

Notes: Also 6.35 at Lions Last Drag Race 72. Won IHRA Summernationals at Dragway 42 in August 72 with a 6.50/221.13. Ran 6.38 at Palm Beach, 6.313/224.43 at Tulsa PRA. | The team started the season at Fremont's New Year’s Day race. It was an eight-car show and a 6.72 beat Denver Schutz in round one, but Flip fouled against eventual winner Dennis Baca in the semifinals. They were at OCIR for the third All-Pro race where Flip's 6.51 qualified #5 in the eight-car show, but an ailing 7.17 in the opening round lost to Clayton Harris' 6.22/233. Schofield got a bit of revenge at the Las Vegas National Open where he got around Harris in the first round. This time Harris broke on the run. In the second round, Flip got beat by Jeb Allen. He was back at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals where a 6.38 in qualifying was good enough for the #2 spot in the field behind Don Garlits' 6.30. A first-round 6.46/223.88 beat Don Cook and in round two another 6.46 beat an out of shape Jim Nicoll. But in the semifinals, both he and Allen ran 6.47 (Flip at 227.84), but the "kid" got the win light. Later in the month, they were at the Race of Champions at Fresno, but Flip lost to Jim Lynn in the opening round. At the AHRA Pro-Am Championships at West Palm Beach, a 6.38 qualified well, but the team failed to reach the finals. They looked like a sure bet to win at the Florida State Championships at Miami-Hollywood. Flip qualified #1 with a 6.55/215.82. He improved to 6.51/225.56 in beating Marvin Schwartz in the first round, and he easily won his semifinal race to face #2 qualifier Steve Carbone in the final. Unfortunately, the car lost fire on the line and Carbone soloed for the win. It was then off to Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals. A 6.51 qualified #4 and an even better 6.43 beat the Anderson Brothers in the opening round. In round two he used a 6.58 to beat a tire-smoking Gary Cochran, but in the semifinals, the team was having trouble keeping the car lit. It finally died and Nicoll took a single to advance to the final. The NHRA Division 7 Opener was held at Irwindale. Schofield failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field, but Larry Bowers broke and Flip replaced him in the show. In the first round a 6.70 beat Mike Snively, but he lost in the following round.

Notes: Dan did not qualify at IHRA Dallas in June (times unknown), but he replaced #qualifier Clayton Harris in the field and made the most of it. He coasted in round one when Larry Brown lost fire. In round two, he ran 6.46/229.00 over Mike Tarter (time unknown). He failed to show in the semis against Carl Olson. Dan ran 6.535/226.70 at the Tulsa PRA National Challenge in August. At the Amarillo World Finals, Dan qualified #4 at 6.65. In round one, he took an 8.53/107.91 bye run. In round two, he ran 6.48/209.30 over Charles Durel at 7.02/186.33. But his excellent 6.41/229.00 in the third round lost to an identical but quicker leaving, 6.41/229.00 by eventual winner Jim Walther. That was Dan's only known NHRA national event, although many NHRA national events did not publish all alternates. Some info courtesy of Freddie Young.
