Notes: Charlie ran 6.682/229.00 to qualify #27 at Indy, but he broke and did not run in the first round. He qualified #9 for the Eastern team and #17 overall at the Amarillo World Finals (positions based on points standings). He lost to James Warren in round one, 6.550/213 to 6.86/212.26. Charlie also ran 6.69 at Warner Robins. Some info from Freddie Young. We need to validate that these runs were in the Hop N Gator and not the Insomnia car in which Charlie started the season. |

Notes: Petersen was at Fremont for their New Year's Day race. He qualified #2 with a 6.61, but he lost to Gary Ormsby in the first round. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he lasted until round three, scoring a first-round victory with a 6.69 and a second-round 6.58 over Rick Ramsey's 6.58, but in the third round, Carl Olson beat him. On March 19, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.43 qualified #3, and he ran a career-best (to this point) 6.41 in the first round, to beat Bill Wigginton's 6.63. In round two, he soloed with a 15.82 when Jimmy King failed to show (broke). Herm's 392 failed to fire in the semifinal, giving Clayton Harris a single into the final. Herm made history by scoring the first major win for the Donovan motor by winning the PDA Championships at OCIR. He beat Don Garlits' 6.63 with a 6.42 in the first round, before losing to Fred Mooneyham's 6.62/212 in the second round with a quicker 6.58/217.91. He got back in on the break rule and made the best of it by dropping Randy Allison's 6.57/184 with a 6.37/222.77 in the third frame (32 car field). In the semifinal, he met Mooneyham again. This time, he made sure to put him outrunning a 6.24 (Low ET) at 220.04 over Fred's 6.58/229. In the final, he defeated Tom McEwen for the victory. Also, 6.24 & 6.26 at Lions Last Drag Race. 6.26/221.67 at Ontario Supernationals 72, plus 6.293/220.04 at Indy 1972. Info from National Dragster, 10/29/71. Ran 6.16 at Lions, 6.79 at Pomona, 6.41 at Gainesville, 6.45 at Columbus, 6.62 at Englishtown, and 6.147 during eliminations at Indy. Ran 226.13 at Indy and 228.42 at the Orange County Nitro Championships. |

Notes: Won Division 1 1972. Last front-engine dragster to win national event at 1972 Le Grandnational Molson in Montreal. Marshall defeated Jeb Allen in the finals 6.57/220.58. This was the former Prudhomme '70 Indy winning dragster. Prudhomme had to add the unusual body (for Mattel/Hot Wheels) in 1971, but quickly went to rear-engined cars and sold this to Van Iderstine Speed & Auto. Ran 6.550 at Sanair. |

Notes: The team qualified #31 at Pomona at 6.899/206.42. They improved in round one, but still lost to Gary Cochran, 6.77/204 to 6.84/228.42. They ran bests of 6.22/225.56 at NHRA Ontario, but that was in the new rear-engine car. We need to confirm that it was indeed the front engine car at NHRA Pomona. |

Notes: A member of the "Greek Fleet." 6.51 Gateway {Don's season started at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran really well there, beating Mike Tarter in the first round before beating "Big Daddy" Don Garlits' 6.71 with a 6.66. He lasted until the semifinals of the 32-car show when his throttle linkage broke on the line against eventual winner Steve Carbone. He was one of 78 cars attempting to qualify at the Bakersfield March Meet. He made the show but lost to Larry Dixon in the opening round. A week later(March 12), he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. A 6.58 qualified #12, but once again, he lost in the opening round, this time to Flip Schofield. On May 9 at Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals, Cook had a rough day. During qualifying, a wing strut brace broke, and it cut down a tire. The dragster got out of control and crashed. The chassis broke in two and skidded down the track to a stop. Don was okay, but the dragster was destroyed. He was down and out for a while, but on July 9, he was at Marion County for the AHRA Marathon Nationals. Cook had lost to Garlits in the semifinals, but Garlits blew his engine and was unable to return for the final, so Cook was reinstated. He lost that final to Chris Karamesines. |

Notes: Paul "Dodger" Glenn. Ran 6.76 at Maple Grove. | At the third NHRA Division 1 race held at Maple Grove, Glenn ran 6.76/221.67 (Top Speed) to qualify #5 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he lost to low qualifier Chip Woodall, driving Gene Snow's dragster in the first round. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, his 6.58/227.84 qualified #15, but he hurt some parts and could not run in eliminations. Larry Bucher took his place in the show. He failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.94/218.44 that landed him 39th, and at Atco for the final NHRA Division 1 race, he lost to Fred Forkner in the opening round. |

Notes: This was the second RCS Sub-Frame built. Ran 6.48 at Sacramento. | Walt Rhoades, Charles James, and Steve Levy had all individually competed in Top Gas competition. When T/G was dropped, they teamed up on this car. It used an unusual chassis. The basic 225" chassis was built by RCS, but then Frank Huszar designed a sliding sub-frame to remove or maintain the engine. The engine was a bored out 392 Hemi that used a Moldex crank as well as Howards rods and 7.5:1 Arias pistons. Howards also supplied the cam. The heads were ported and polished by Mondello and they used 2" Donovan valves. Don Hampton prepared the blower and Hilborn injectors rode on top. It used an RCS direct drive to a 4.30 rear end. The bodywork was the product of Nye Frank. Despite the extra subframe, the weight was only 1,400 lbs. It cost $8,000 to build. Early runs by Rhoades produced a 6.31/225. Notes: Chip set Top Fuel ET record on 5/72 at Epping NH (6.27) (after Clayton Harris' 6.25 record was retired after a rules change). We need to confirm that it was this car and not the Gene Snow machine. |

Notes: Steve Stephens and Dick Venables had Ed Mabry build them this 215" wheelbase car for '72. Buddy Warren did the bodywork. It ran a Donovan 417 that was overbored .110" to give it a displacement of 428. The stock-stroke crank came from Velasco. Howards rods held Brooks pistons in place, and the cam was also from Howards. Donovan ported and polished the steel '58 Hemi heads that used Donovan 2" stainless steel valves. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold, and Marc Danekas reworked the GMC 6/71. Up top sat an Enderle injection unit. The transmission was a Lenco-two speed that fed the power back to a Mopar rear with 4.10 gears. The overall weight of the car was 1,370 lbs. The dragster was gold, red, orange, and blue, sprayed on by Brian Hildebrand. An interesting helper on the crew was 18 year old Rahn Tobler. We need confirmation of the 224 mph run. Ran confirmed 6.468/221.13 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge. The team also ran 6.53 at LaPlace. They ran a funny car, too. |

Notes: Ran 6.76 at Beeline AZ. Qualified #21 at Pomona Winters at 6.804/218.97. Improved to 6.740/224.43 in round one, but lost to Tony Nancy at 6.63/227.84. That was Ron's only NHRA national event in Top Fuel (he drove the Chi-Town Hustler at the Supernationals). |
