Notes: Weird that on April 13, before Hightower started driving this car, James Warren drove it at a Lion's TF show. On May 4, Bob was driving for "Mr Ed" at a sixteen car show at Irwindale. He beat John Mulligan's 7.11-226 in the first round with a 7.09-223.32. In round two, he thought it was time for a little snooze and his 7.10-221.65 lost to Dwight Salisbury's slower 7.27-220. On May 25, the team was at OCIR for another sixteen car show. He got past the first round and in round two met up with James Warren. Bob won the race with a 7.18-215.3 over Warren's 7.57-166. In the semifinal, he ran a consistent 7.18-224.42 but lost to Dave Beebe's holeshot 7.20-214.

Notes: Dave was driving this car at Lions on April 13. A 7.07 qualified #4 in the eight-car show. He lasted until the semifinals when a 7.38-190.66 lost to eventual winner Don Cook's 7.08-222. He won a big sixteen car show at Irwindale on May 4. He soloed in the first round when the "Outcast" lost fire, and in round two, a 7.29-223.88 advanced when Steve Carbone fouled. Dave got another free ride in the semifinal when Dwight Salisbury also fouled. Beebe stroked it to a 7.54. In the final, he faced the Lee Brothers and won with a 7.52-189.46.

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 2002 visit to Don Garlits Museum, Ocala, FL. Tinker Toy VI was built after an earlier crash at Irwindale. Robinson then built Tinker Toy VII, which resulted in yet another crash, this one fatal, at Pomona Winternationals 1970. Don Garlits recovered the TT VI from a Sportsman driver and restored with some original parts (drive train, engine front cover, blower drive and injectors. Pete qualified on the bump at Indy 9/68 with a 7.045-223.32. AKA Crane Cams Spl. Formerly listed a 6.55 for this year, but that seems way too quick for 1968 and we have no news reports of that. Need to confirm quickest times for 1968. | Pete had another driver in his car early in '68. Not sure if it was Steve Carbone who drove this car to Low ET at 7.02 and a runner-up finish at the AHRA Winternationals or not. But when Pete showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he finally had his cast off his leg from the accident he had the year before. Once again it may have been Carbone who drove but failed to qualify. Pete returned to the driver's seat after almost a one year absence at the Stardust National Open. He qualified in the sixteen car show with a 7.32 and in the first round he picked up to a 7.15. A second round 7.21 got him into the semifinal where he lost to Tom McEwen. On March 3 he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. Robinson qualified with a 7.01 but lost a motor while doing it. In the first round he won his race but lost another motor. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Pete ran well. In round two he advanced with a 7.16 when McEwen broke on the line. In the third round (32 car show), he was caught napping, and his 6.99-218.95 lost to James Warren's 7.05-222.

Notes: Ken qualified in the top half of the 32 car show at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran a 7.12-221.66 that qualified #13. An off pace 7.80 in the first round lost to Hank Westmoreland's 7.10. At the sixth annual Fresno Winter race of Champions, Ken ran well, beating Frank Martinez's 7.18 in the first round with a holeshot 7.20. In the second round Bobby Hightower fouled against him and in the semifinals, he slowed to a 7.65 that lost to James Warren's 7.17. He won the West Coast Championships at Fremont on March 17, setting a track record 6.96 along the way to the winners circle. Kenny was at Irwindale on June 29, but he lost a close race in the first round when his 7.41-219.90 lost to Ron Hampshire's 7.40-208. At the OCIR Nitro Championships, Safford qualified #2 in the sixteen car field with a 7.18-222.26. He beat Wayne King in Tony Waters' car in the first round with a 7.29-207.30 while a 7.57-204.54 advanced him into the semifinals. There, he lost to Jim Dunn. A 6.99-219.50 qualified #9 at Lions for the PDA Championships. He met low qualifier Jerry Ruth in the first round and his 7.14-214.78 lost to Ruth's 7.01-227. He got another first round loss at Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships on Aug 3. There, his 7.24-220.58 lost to King's low ET and top speed 6.90-223. At the Fremont Fuel Championships, he lasted until round two where a broken fuel pump stopped him in his run against James Warren. Kenny advanced past the first round when Rich Zoucha broke. He fouled against Gerry Glenn in the first round at Sacramento for NHRA's fourth Division Seven race. This team was way too good to be losing so early in these races. Things took a turn for the better on Aug 17 at Fremont. Safford set low ET at 7.06 and went to the final before losing to Butch Maas driving for the Berry Brothers. On Aug 31, the team qualified first at OCIR for an eight car show with a 7.16-218.44. A first round 7.29-215.82 lost to Warren's low ET and top speed of the meet run of 7.01-227. Fortunately for Safford, Warren hurt a motor while winning and was unable to continue. With the break rule in effect (quickest loser from the previous round is reinstated), Kenny got back into the show. In the semifinals, he ran 7.66-200 to take out Goss-Smyer. So Safford was now in the final where he was up against Johnny Martin. Kenny tried hard but the motor was just not up to snuff as his 7.54-208.80 finished second best to Johnny's 7.27-212.

Notes: Ex Top Gas car. Confirmed 7.056, 221.66 (DNQ) at Indy 1968. Ran a 7.07 at only 189 at Riverside 3/24/68. At the second annual Stardust National Open at Las Vegas, Tom qualified #2 in the sixteen car show with a 7.11. In the first round, he put a holeshot on Don Prudhomme and held on to it for a win. In the second round, he lost to Tom McEwen. Larkin ran his first ever "six," a 6.99 at OCIR on March 3 for the PDA Championships. Unfortunately, he failed to make the finals. Tom qualified with a 6.92-184.80 at the PDA Championships at Lions on July 20. A first round 8.04 got him into round two where Chris Karamesines' 6.76-218.44 (Low ET) beat his 7.12-166.97. This is Big Tom Larkin (the older one).
