A 6.87, 219.50 at Springs was half of quickest and fastest side by side race at the time (with Mike Snively at 7.10-221.66). Confirmed 6.894, 226.70 at Indy 9-68. Notes: Kalitta's '68 season was nothing like his winning season of '67. He ran well, setting track records but the big wins eluded him. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, the race he won the previous year, he was hard pressed to qualify. 80 cars attempted to make the 32 car field and Conrad's 7.21-217.90 qualified #27. In the first round, a 7.46-218.96 beat Ray Ayres' 7.46-222. He advanced past round two with an 8.01 when Mike Snively fouled against him in the "Hawaiian." But in round three, his 7.23-219.50 lost to Ron Rolstad's 7.20-222. Early in March he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. This was a crazy 64 car show. Once again he lasted until the third round before spinning a bearing and losing to Kenny Safford. Surprisingly, he did not make the trek to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet (he didn't in '67 either). In May Kalitta ran 7.10 to set a Pittsburgh track record. At Englishtown for the NHRA Springnationals, Kalitta was embarrassed when his best of 7.13 failed to make the sixteen car field. Also set both ends of Tri-City Saginaw records at 7.06-226.21. On July 27, he had a best of three match race with Snively at York U.S. 30. Kalitta won the first race with a 7.21-212.26 when Mike fouled. In the second race, it was Connie's turn to red light and his 7.34-206.88 lost to the "Hawaiian's" 7.24. Connie won the match with a 6.89 in the third race. Back at Pittsburgh later in '68, he again set the track record, this time with a 7.02. On August 28, Kalitta debuted a new lightweight Logghe built car at Cecil County for the Mr. U.S.A Fuel Meet. He was having trouble getting the dragster to launch straight. In the first round he faced John Mulligan and he gambled on the tree and lost, fouling away a 7.42. John ran 7.14 for the win. After he failed to qualify at the Springnationals, it was nice to make the field easily at the U.S. Nationals. His 6.97-215.30 qualified #19 for the 32 car show. A first round 7.36-212.76 advanced past Mulligan but in round two he fouled against Bennie Osborn. - Ron Howard

Notes: NHRA record holder. Vic Brown had his most successful year driving a fuel dragster in '68 driving for Bob Creitz and Ed Greer. He started the season by setting top speed at the AHRA Winternationals. AHRA used Fosdick timing equipment while most others tracks used Chrondek. The ETs and speeds were often different from what we were used to seeing on Chrondek timers. It was reported that Vic set top speed at 225.22 but yet in the first round he beat Dave Beebe with a 7.13-226.12. He lost before the finals but if any one knows the official top speed at the AHRA event, it would be good to know. Brown had some bad luck at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and as a result he failed to qualify. In a qualifying pass he had the parachute fail and he ended up hitting the hay bales and bending the chassis. So with the Creitz and Greer car out of commission, he attempted to qualify the Nash and Williams car. Not three hours after he hit the hay bales he did it again in their car when once again the 'chute failed. At the Stardust Open in Las Vegas, Vic ran as well as a 7.04 on the way to the final where he met Tom McEwen. Unfortunately, he fouled, giving McEwen the win. He grabbed a big win at the PDA Championships on March 3 at OCIR. It was a 64 car show and Brown had a couple of easy rounds but in the semifinals, he ran a 6.80 to advance over a fouling Chris Karamesines. In the final, he was up against Don Garlits. He must have had "Big Daddy" on edge as Don fouled and Vic roared to victory. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 7.16 qualified #23 in the 32 car field but he failed to make the late rounds. On March 24, he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. It was another 32 car show and in round three he lost to McEwen. But McEwen broke so Brown was reinstated for the semifinals. It was Kelly Brown vs. Vic Brown (no relation), and Kelly's 7.42 beat Vic's sleepy 7.29. He was runner-up to Don Cook at the Texas Pro Circuit race at Green Valley Raceway on May 11. He qualified #2 with a 7.47-211.26 and he set a track record of 7.15 in the first round. In the semifinals, Vic ran another 7.15 at 192.70 to advance to the final. In the final, both cars had trouble with Cook blowing his clutch but still winning with a 7.89 when Brown shut down with problems. Vic won Oklahoma's Pro Circuit race on May 12 beating a sixteen car field. He set Top Speed at 221.12 on the way to the win. In the final he beat Don Cook. A week later (May 18), he was at another race at Oklahoma City. He had a good first round race with Cook which he won with a 7.18-220.00 over Don's 7.27-218. He won his semifinal race to advance into the final where he ran Bennie Osborn. Vic fouled away a 7.25-219.84 that gave Bennie a 7.21-220 victory. Also ran 6.945 at NHRA Englishtown 6/68.

At the PDA Championships at OCIR on March 3, he ran as well as 6.98 but once again he failed to reach the finals. Ron won the big Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.97 qualified #5 and he beat James Warren in the semifinals before soloing for the win when Leroy Goldstein failed to fire in the final. On March 17 he was at LaPlace for its '68 Opener. Rivero qualified first in the eight-car field with a 7.08. A first round 7.26 beat Cliff Smith's AA/D. In the semifinals, he ran LaPlace's first "six," a 6.96-216.34 over Kerry Mackenroth. He won the race with a final round 7.04-217.90 over Dave Chenevert. Another win came on May 17 at Norwood's 1/8 Mile Championships. Rivero qualified #3 with a 5.03 but he picked up to a 4.93-168.53 in the first round to beat Don Roberts' gas-burner. In the semifinals Jimmy King fouled against him and Ron ran a 5.08-138 to advance into the final. In the final he faced off against low qualifier Mike Danylo in Fred Forkner's "Quarterhorse". Rivero set a track record 4.73 at top speed of the meet 172.7 to get the win over Mike's 5.22-155.

Notes: Anderson engines in Bernstein's car (ex-McEwen chassis).| On June 9, the Texas Pro Fuel circuit held a race at Tulsa. Twenty-six cars tried to qualify for the sixteen spots. Bernstein made the show and in the first round advanced over Jimmy Nix who fouled. In round two, Kenny's 7.56-198 lost to Dwight Salisbury's 7.27-202. The Texas Pro Fuel circuit held another eight car show on June 15 at Odessa Raceway Park. Bernstein ran a 7.58-208.80 to qualify #7. He beat Larry Brown's 7.56 in the first round with a holeshot 7.61-208. In the semifinal, he used a 7.34 to beat Gary Bailey's 7.45. Kenny went on to win the event with a 7.76-197.36 in the final when opponent George Cox lost a clutch on the line and was unable to run. Kenny made it two in a row at Amarillo on June 23 for an eight car Pro Fuel circuit race. He qualified #2 with a 7.20-225.69. He beat Ray Whisenhunt in the first round and in the semifinals, he beat Bennie Osborn's 7.41 with a 7.37. In the final he raced and beat Larry Brown in the "Chaos Kids" fueler for the title. In July, Amarillo hosted the Texas Championships and Bernstein qualified first with a 7.39-214.28. In the first round his off-pace 7.73 lost to Osborn's 7.46 but Bennie had lost an engine while winning and was unable to run his semifinal race so Kenny was reinstated into the show. It did him little good as he lost to Larry Brown's 7.49 with a close 7.51-213.76.

Notes: Weird that on April 13, before Hightower started driving this car, James Warren drove it at a Lion's TF show. On May 4, Bob was driving for "Mr Ed" at a sixteen car show at Irwindale. He beat John Mulligan's 7.11-226 in the first round with a 7.09-223.32. In round two, he thought it was time for a little snooze and his 7.10-221.65 lost to Dwight Salisbury's slower 7.27-220. On May 25, the team was at OCIR for another sixteen car show. He got past the first round and in round two met up with James Warren. Bob won the race with a 7.18-215.3 over Warren's 7.57-166. In the semifinal, he ran a consistent 7.18-224.42 but lost to Dave Beebe's holeshot 7.20-214.

Notes: Dave was driving this car at Lions on April 13. A 7.07 qualified #4 in the eight-car show. He lasted until the semifinals when a 7.38-190.66 lost to eventual winner Don Cook's 7.08-222. He won a big sixteen car show at Irwindale on May 4. He soloed in the first round when the "Outcast" lost fire, and in round two, a 7.29-223.88 advanced when Steve Carbone fouled. Dave got another free ride in the semifinal when Dwight Salisbury also fouled. Beebe stroked it to a 7.54. In the final, he faced the Lee Brothers and won with a 7.52-189.46.

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 2002 visit to Don Garlits Museum, Ocala, FL. Tinker Toy VI was built after an earlier crash at Irwindale. Robinson then built Tinker Toy VII, which resulted in yet another crash, this one fatal, at Pomona Winternationals 1970. Don Garlits recovered the TT VI from a Sportsman driver and restored with some original parts (drive train, engine front cover, blower drive and injectors. Pete qualified on the bump at Indy 9/68 with a 7.045-223.32. AKA Crane Cams Spl. Formerly listed a 6.55 for this year, but that seems way too quick for 1968 and we have no news reports of that. Need to confirm quickest times for 1968. | Pete had another driver in his car early in '68. Not sure if it was Steve Carbone who drove this car to Low ET at 7.02 and a runner-up finish at the AHRA Winternationals or not. But when Pete showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he finally had his cast off his leg from the accident he had the year before. Once again it may have been Carbone who drove but failed to qualify. Pete returned to the driver's seat after almost a one year absence at the Stardust National Open. He qualified in the sixteen car show with a 7.32 and in the first round he picked up to a 7.15. A second round 7.21 got him into the semifinal where he lost to Tom McEwen. On March 3 he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. Robinson qualified with a 7.01 but lost a motor while doing it. In the first round he won his race but lost another motor. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Pete ran well. In round two he advanced with a 7.16 when McEwen broke on the line. In the third round (32 car show), he was caught napping, and his 6.99-218.95 lost to James Warren's 7.05-222.
