Notes: Alexander ran really well at Irwindale on May 23 for the NHRA Division 7 race. He ran an easy 8.30/146.57 in the first round, when Ron Hampshire fouled against him. His 6.90/200.00 beat a tire-smoking Dwight Salisbury in round two, and a semifinal 6.99/219.50 took out James Warren, who shut down early. In the final, he faced Jim Davis, and Bill got a little over-anxious and fouled. The following week (May 31), he was at Fremont for an eight-car show. His 6.86 qualified #3. Dennis Baca fouled against him in the first round, and he advanced easily, but a blown rear end took him out in his semifinal race against Bob Hightower. Bill was at OCIR on July 25 for the 32 car show PDA Championships. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.93/217.91, and he only needed a 9.34 in the second round when opponent Frank Bradley fouled. In the third round, his 6.80/221.67 lost to eventual winner Steve Carbone's 6.75/223. At the NHRA Supernationals, Bill qualified #15 in the 32 car field with a 6.836. He lasted until round three, where he smoked the tires to a 7.02 that lost to Gerry Glenn's 6.92. Bill's best NHRA national event times were 6.743/212.76 at the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario.

Notes: Jim Davis was issued #788. He was Division 7 champ in 1970. Was #71 in 1971. Then had #767 in 1972. | Davis started his season at Fremont's New Year's Day race. Unfortunately, his 7.18/200.88 in the first round, lost to Gerry Glenn's 6.89/217 in John Bateman's car. Jim qualified #12 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.90. He made it all the way to the semifinals before fouling to Tony Nancy. Jim qualified #4 with a 6.80 at Bakersfield for the March Meet. He beat Frank Pedregon's 7.10/201 in the first round, with a 6.82/207.84, a second round 6.94/186.72 beat Norm Weekly's 7.06/182. In round three, he stayed consistent with a 6.87/178.21 over Billy Tidwell's 7.28/167. In the semis, he fell off the pace to a 7.13/201.34 that lost to Tony Nancy's 6.81/215. Jim ran at Sears Point on March 15 for the San Francisco National Open. He beat Gary Ritter's 7.21 in the first round, with a 6.95/209.75, but in round two he slipped to a 7.22 that lost to Vic Brown's 7.15. On May 2 he ran at an eight-car show at Irwindale where he qualified #3 with a 6.93. A first-round 6.99/161.29 beat Tidwell's 7.70. In the semifinals, he ran his best ET of the meet, a 6.92/206.34, but still lost to Gary Cochran's 6.84/216. At the NHRA Division 7 opener on May 23 at Irwindale, he beat Dave Hage in the first round, with a 6.96/200.44. Jim took an easy second round win when Larry Dixon's car failed to fire and, in the semifinals, he watched as Cochran fouled away Low ET of the meet (6.82). Luck was on his side when final round opponent Bill Alexander also fouled giving Jim an easy 7.65/205.00 run for the win. The following week he won again, this time over an eight-car field at Fremont. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.81. Jim needed a little luck to win this one as in the first round, Dixon's 7.05/167 beat his 6.96/210.28, but Larry had lost a rear and was unable to return in the semifinals so Davis got back in on the "break rule.” Gary Ritter shut off against him in the semi's and Jim advanced with a 7.30. In the final he faced Bobby Hightower in Jesse Perkins' "Cow Palace Shell" car. Bob's car blew a head gasket and Davis got the victory with a 7.09. 40 cars showed up to qualify for the 16 spots at the next NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. Jim made the field with a 6.80 for #11 qualifying spot. Unfortunately, a 6.77 from Glenn dropped him in the first round. Davis did manage to win the fourth Division 7 race at Bonneville on August 23. He ran 6.99 over Don Durbin in round one, and in the semifinals, his 6.87/211.68 (Top Speed) beat Paul Schoenfeld. In the final he met Jim Dunn and beat him with a 6.91/209.71. | Best NHRA national event times were 6.750/215.31.

Notes: This was probably Tony's best season behind the wheel of a Top Fuel Dragster. He started the season by qualifying #1 with a 6.82 at the first OCIR All-Pro on Jan 4. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 6.90/219.51 in the first round, against Joe Lee. At the second OCIR All-Pro event on January 18, he lost to Gerry Glenn's 6.75/216 in the first round, with a 6.96/209.79. He got back in on the break rule when Kelly Brown broke, but he fouled opposite Norm Wilcox. He was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals on February 1. A 6.93 qualified #14 in the 32 car field. He advanced steadily towards the finals, getting a couple of easy runs along the way. In the third round, he ran a 7.63 when Steve Carbone broke just off the line and in the semifinal, Jim Davis fouled against him. He lost to Larry Dixon's 6.86 in the final. Tony failed to qualify at the third OCIR All-Pro on February 22, but Kelly Brown was unable to run so Nancy took his place in the field. He ran a strong 6.74/218.97 in the first round, over low qualifier Ron Hampshire's 6.77/229. A broken motor kept him from running Gary Cochran in the semis. Then came his big win of '70 at Famoso for the March Meet. 75 cars showed to qualify for a spot in the 32 car field. Tony's 6.93 qualified #10. Dwight Salisbury fouled against him in the opening round and he won a close second round race against Glenn. Both ran 6.87, Tony at 214.78 and Glenn at 215. In the third round, he beat James Warren's 7.17/209 with a 7.03/213.76. In the semifinals, he ran his best time of the event, a 6.81/215.30 over Jim Davis' 7.13/201. He won the final with a 7.09/159.57 when Harry Hibler fouled. He ran an eight-car show at Irwindale on April 11. He qualified #6, but fouled against Ron Hampshire in the first round. On June 21 he won the third NHRA Division 4 race at Oklahoma City Raceway. He qualified #1 with a track record 6.91 then beat Jimmy Duppstadt and advanced over a broken Raymond Beadle in the semifinal. In the final, Tony only needed a 7.12/208.80 to win at opponent Buddy Cortines lost fire on the line. He then raced at the second NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. 40 cars showed up for the 16 available spots and Nancy was the quickest in qualifying with a 6.55 (Low ET). He advanced past the first-round with a 6.70 when Jim Dunn lost a clutch, but in the second round, he went up in smoke against Dave Uyehara. Tony made a good account of himself on July 25 at OCIR for the PDA Championships. He ran a first-round 6.86/187.89 over Uyehara's 7.03/222, and a second round 6.75/217.91 beat Frank Prock's 6.89/211. In the third round (32 car field), he beat Glenn's 6.94/211 with a 6.82/215.31. He took a big win in the semifinal, beating a fouling Don Prudhomme with Low ET of the meet, a 6.69/220.04. Unfortunately, he fouled in the final against Steve Carbone in Mike Kuhl's car. He set Low ET at the fourth NHRA Division 7 race at Bonneville on August 23 with a 6.82, but lost to Uyehara in the first round. Won OKC WCS race | Best NHRA national event times of 6.820/214.28.

Notes: Blair's Engineering. | Tommy Allen must have been taking it easy early in '70 as I can't find anything on him until August 15 at the OCIR Anniversary race where he lost fire on the line in round one. It gets better though, when he qualified #1 with a 6.87 at Irwindale, but still lost in round one, when he smoked the tires against Kelly Brown. Back at OCIR for their double header on August 29, he qualified #1 with a 6.74, but lost to James Warren's 6.75/212 in round one, with an off pace 7.17/195. At the Lions Anniversary race on September 26, Allen was starting to set a pattern. He qualified #1 with a Low ET of the Meet 6.57 then lost in round one. He made it past the first-round at Irwindale's second annual Grand Prix on October 3, but lost to Gary Cochran's holeshot 6.91/212 to Allen's quicker 6.89/210.28. On October 24, Lions held an eight-car fuel meet and Tommy lost in the semis to Danny Ongais' 6.54/227 with a 6.66/220.04. Allen won a big one driving Byron Blair's car to a win at the AHRA World Finals on November 15 beating Preston Davis in the final. A 6.831 qualified him #13 at the NHRA Supernationals, but he lost early. | Best NHRA national event times were the 6.831 at 207.85.

Notes: Kelly Brown started the season in Lou Baney's SOHC Ford-powered car, but Brown and Billy Tidwell switched rides at the beginning of April. The switch was made because Baney was left to racing in southern California due to business commitments, and Kelly wanted to tour, as did Tidwell's car owner, Leland Kolb. So, on April 11 at Irwindale, Kelly qualified fifth in an eight-car field and made it into the semi's only to go up in smoke against Gary Cochran. At OCIR on May 16, Gerry Glenn's 6.81/213 beat his off pace 7.18/172.41 in round one. Ron Hampshire's 6.79/223 beat Kelly's 6.83/218.97 in the first round, at the Nitro Championships at OCIR on July 3. On July 11, for the AHRA All-American at Lion's, Brown had a strange day. A great first-round 6.65/220.04 beat a shutting-off James Warren. An easy 10-second pass due to a red-light by Don Moody got him into the semifinal. He broke against Jim Dunn, but Jim fouled, and Kelly's 8.27 put him in the finals. He couldn’t make the final, and Steve Carbone won. At the PDA US Pro Dragster Championships on July 25, He fouled next to Don Prudhomme in the second round. Billy Tidwell stopped Brown in the first round, at OCIR's Anniversary race on August 15. | Kelly’s best NHRA national event times were 6.792/223.32 in the Lou Baney car. This car got a best of 6.892/193.96 on the NHRA trail.

Notes: Hank was at Bremerton on May 24 for the NHRA Division Six race. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 7.35/158.17. He got to solo in the first round when Terry Kniss broke. Hank ran 6.93/207.84 to advance. He ran another 6.93/207.84 in the semi-final, but it wasn't enough as he lost to the eventual winner, Walt Johnson's 6.71/217. Near the end of July, he was at Spokane for the fourth NHRA Division Six race. A 7.09/220.04 qualified #6 for the eight-car show. The race where Jerry Ruth and Herm Petersen both failed to qualify at. But Hank didn't hang around long in eliminations as he lost to the eventual winner, Dick Kalivoda, in the opening round. Mike Gagnon info.

Notes: Glenn failed to qualify on May 2 at Irwindale for an eight-car race, but he got in as an alternate. It did him little good as Jim Dunn's 6.83/201 put him on the trailer in the first round. On May 16, OCIR held a sixteen-car show. Gerry's 6.81/213.77 beat Kelly Brown (7.18/172) in the first round, but he was shut down on the line with an oil leak in round two. Another sixteen-car show was held on May 23 at Irwindale for NHRA's Division 7 race. Glenn fouled in the first round against Bill Alexander. He ran a lot better on June 6 for the Tom Ferraro Benefit race at Irwindale. He qualified #1 with a 6.82/207.36 and set Low ET with a first-round 6.74/215.30 over Bob Ivett (7.17/207). Don Moody fouled in the semifinal, so Glenn faced Gary Essman for the title. A final 6.87/219.50 won over Essman's ailing 9.48/90.62. He won again on June 20 at OCIR's March of Dimes event, beating Don Moody's 6.79/226.13 with a 6.78/215.82 in the final. The following week (June 28), he was at Fremont for the second NHRA Division Seven race. Glenn's 6.69 qualified #3. In the opening round, he defeated Jim Davis with a 6.77. Bill Tidwell lost a blower belt against him in round two, and his 6.91 advanced. He was late off the line in the semifinal, and his 6.73/201.34 lost to eventual winner Dave Uyehara's 6.82/223. At the Nitro Championships on July 3 at OCIR, he fouled against John Mitchell in the opening round. Another foul in the first round took him out of competition at Irwindale's July 4 Championships. On July 11 at AHRA's All-American at Lions, Glenn ran a first-round 6.75/194.80, but in the second round, Jim Dunn's 6.75/217.91 beat Gerry's quicker 6.72/216.86. Notes: Ron had a great Gatornationals in 1970. He qualified #10 at 6.908/208.31, then ran his best ET of the year in a round one defeat of Preston Davis, 6.812/211.26 to 7.71/153. He laid a massive holeshot on Marvin Schwartz in round two, hanging on to win a 6.875/218.97 to 6.780/214.79 victory. Dave Chevenvert defeated Ron in the semis, with that was either a massive holeshot of his own or perhaps a foul by Ron (need info). The times were 7.765/173.07 for Chevevert to 7.408/152.02 for Ron. Chenevert went on to win the event with a huge holeshot over Jim Paoli. Ron qualified on the bump at NHRA York with a 7.03/207.85 but did not run in round one. He was a distant DNQ at Indy with a 7.248 best.

Notes: Harry qualified #32 at the NHRA Wintersnationals at 7.129/218.44 in John Smyser's car (assuming that is the Olympian? If not, create a separate entry). In round one, he lost to Billy Tidwell, 7.35/214 to 7.512/209.79. That was Harry's only NHRA national event. He was driving the Olympian at Irwindale on August 1 for its Gold Cup Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #13. Unfortunately, he fouled against Dave Uyehara in the opening round of competition.

Notes: Don qualified #29 at NHRA Pomona at 7.110/213.27. He lost to Gary Cochran in round one, 6.892/202.70 to 7.488/217.91. That was his only NHRA national event of the year (Dick Boufgesous drove his Corvette FC at Pomona). Sixty-six Top Fuel cars showed up at Fremont on February 15 for the Northern Nationals sixteen-car field. Don qualified, but he blew a rear end in the opening round and lost to eventual winner Steve Carbone. The following week (February 22), he was at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. It took a 6.86 just to qualify for the eight-car field. Cook made the show, and his 7.16/182.18 advanced over a fouling John Wiebe in the first round. He caught a good light in the semifinal, and his 6.83/192.71 held off Jim Dunn's quicker 6.77/204. He faced Gary Cochran in the final, and Cook was forced to shut off with an oil leak. He did not race at the Bakersfield March Meet, choosing to compete at the Lions AHRA Grand American race run the same weekend (March 8). In the opening round, his 6.93 advanced, but an ailing 7.61 in round two lost to Don Garlits' 6.65. Near the end of March, he returned to OCIR for its final All-Pro race. Don failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field but got in as an alternate for Kelly Brown, who broke. In round one, an off-pace 8.24 lost to low qualifier Norm Wilcox's 6.74/189.

Notes: Won Division 4 in 1970. Woodall was at LaPlace Dragway in April for its Spring Drag Festival. It was an eight-car show, and he set Low ET in qualifying low at 6.80. In the opening round, both he and Richard Tharp smoked the tires, but his 7.15/164.17 beat Tharp's 7.83/132. In the semifinal, his 6.91/191.08 lost to Watus Simpson's 6.86/190. Watus hurt his engine on the run and could not make the final, so Chip got back in on the "break rule." In the final, he faced Chris Karamesines, and Woodall's 7.54/166.35 got the victory. Chip qualified #1 with a 6.66 on May 3 at Dallas International for the Division 4 opener. He beat Larry Brown in the first round with a 7.01/161, and in the semifinal, he beat Ronnie Martin's 6.85 with a motor blowing 6.70/196.93. He was unable to run Bennie Osborn in the final. At the following Division 4 race at Southland Dragway, he set Low ET with a 6.82, but he failed to make the finals. He lost in the first round of the Division 4 race at Oklahoma City when Raymond Beadle's 7.34 beat his off-pace 7.50. In June, the team qualified #6 at the NHRA Springnationals in Dallas with a 6.741/213.27. Chip took a leisurely cruise in round one when Dick Custy broke. He beat Kelly Brown in round two, 6.811/200.00 to 6.98/193. Jim Nicoll got a big holeshot win over Chip in round three; however, 6.78/203 to 6.68/214. A 6.77/197.80 qualified second at the NHRA Summernationals, but he shut off in the first round, losing to Pete Robinson's 6.95. He ran at Bristol on August 31 for the eighth AHRA Grand American event, but an off-pace 7.24 lost to Jimmy King's 6.71/215 in the first round. He qualified #7 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a great 6.583 (speed unknown), but he fouled against Robinson in the first round. On September 13, he qualified #1 with a 6.97 at Amarillo for the NHRA Division 4 final. He was the only car in the sixteen-car field to run a six in qualifying. All four runs in eliminations were in the sixes, and he set a track record 6.88 in his second-round win over John Wiebe's 7.02. He also had Top Speed at 211.76. In the final, a 6.98 took the win over Watus Simpson. The team qualified #14 at the Dallas World Finals at an estimated 6.78 (incomplete timesheets). Chip lost to a Preston Davis holeshot in round one, 6.87 to Chip's 6.77/217.91. The team wrapped up the year at the Ontario Supernationals. They qualified #11 at 6.824/212.26 but had troubles in round one and lost to Walt Johnson, 6.85/208 to 8.51/104.

Notes: Drove for John Bateman in early 1970 before changing to the Schultz & Glenn car. Gerry started the season at Fremont's New Year's Day race. It was a sixteen-car show and in round one, he beat Jim Davis with a 6.89/217.38. In round two he went up against eventual winner John Wiebe and the "Atlas Oil Tool Special" blew an engine about 300 feet from the finish line. He coasted through at 7.57. On January 18, Gerry won the second OCIR All-Pro with a final round 6.88/207.00 over Norm Wilcox. He ran a first-round 6.75/216.34 over Tony Nancy (6.96/209.79) and made an easy run in the semis when James Warren fouled. He followed it up with another win on January 26 at Irwindale, beating Gary Cochran with Low ET of the meet in the final 6.84/216.86 to 6.96/219.50. Gerry set Low ET at the NHRA Winternationals while qualifying #1 with a 6.74/217.91, but he lost early. He qualified second at Bakersfield with a 6.75. Tony Nancy's 6.87/214 beat his 6.87/215.82 in round two. - Ron Howard
